Another Bad eBike Behavior Post, What's the Real Solution
So I hate to be an old man and be like oh gripe these kids, and I tend to lean more libertarian minded in terms of less regulations and rules, particularly if they're not going to be enforced so it's against my nature to be like regulate these things. But I had an experience this weekend and it highlighted what a problem SOME kids on eMotorcycles are doing, I would like to acknolwedge ebikes and straight up electric dirt bikes are two different things. Anyhow, I'm out running errands, I see a group of 3-4 kids on emotorcycle style bikes. They're swirving into oncoming traffic, popping wheelies, going from sidewalk and curb to crossing the entire street, back onto sidewalks, cutting through parking lots, swirving and playing games in the street. I should also add this wasn't a neighbrohood street these were major roads. They wound up being on the same route as me for probably a good couple of miles so this wasn't like one wheelie it, this was how they ride pretty much eveywhere. At times they were coming up to lights behind cars like normal traffic one nearly crashed into my back as they approached the light and my car too quickly while swirving and playing games. Problem even if someone calls the cops on these kids cops even if they would come out the kids aren't gonna be there when they get there, there's no plates so there's no later accountability, all these kids wear masks or helmets and gear, I guess that's a plus so no identifying them. Your also asking cops to know the difference between these bikes or be able to pickup speeds on these very small objects. They look fun, I'd be doing the same thing at that age all be it maybe not quite as recklessly. I had a mini bike as a kid but we basically just zipped up and down our neighborhood street they weren't really practical for going out onto main roads so that problem kind of took care of itself. I guess waht I'm getting at is I think were going to see more outright bans on anything that looks like a motorcycle, its gonna be like the "assault weapon" bans, its not going to be about the functionality but with assualt weapons the test is basically does it look mean or aggressive, if you don't have some beach cruiser looking ebike I think they may ban them. That's my rant. submitted by /u/moreplateslessdates9 to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

AITA for planning a solo vacation without telling my husband?
Back story: last year, after both of us had saved for several years, my husband bought a brand new hybrid truck. We had discussed prior to this purchase that after this, our next big purchases - which we would start saving for - would be 1) a new car for me and 2) a "real" vacation (i.e. not one that involves us driving back to our home state to drive around visiting family the whole week). This year, my husband's friend convinced him that he needed a dirt bike so they could go riding together on the weekends. I was against this and when my husband repeatedly brought it up, I what we had agreed upon when he bought his truck. Over the course of a few months, he wore me down and I eventually agreed he could get his dirt bike. Of course, in addition to the bike, he needed all the gear (helmet, boots, pads, etc.) and tools to take care of it, plus a new Ring camera to have on the out building where it's stored. This adds up to a pretty hefty sum. My husband is now planning a trip for this year to go back to our home state for his oldest brother's second wedding (we did not go to his first). Again, we had discussed a "real" vacation, specifically negating going back "home" for a couple years as we have already visited last year and were going to save that money. I have now done something that I never thought I would do. I opened a savings account of my own, without his name on it, and I've started saving towards a solo vacation for myself since he is obviously more interested in spending our savings on other things. I haven't told him about the account because I feel that if he knows about the money, he will find something else to spend it on. I haven't told him about my plans to take a solo vacation because I feel if he knows about it, he'll try to manipulate my plans to fit something that he wants rather than what I want. I am irrationally irritated by people who cycle without a helmet, while dangling one off some part of their bike or body.
I really want to say something to them like "that helmet won't do you much good hanging off your handlebars." End of lecture. Next day edit: Never thought this would garner so much attention or provoke such a discussion! A few clarifications: I've never actually said anything to someone doing this (other than a co-worker, to whom I said something half-jokingly). It is, as many have commented, ultimately none of my business (though I do judge them silently). My context is seeing this on the streets of NYC, so I'm not talking about riding a block down a quiet suburban street, or cooling off during a hard climb. Most of the people I see doing this are either morning commuters on rent-a-bikes or - bizarrely - parents on big e-bikes with empty child seats. "irritated" is perhaps not the right word. Judge-y is probably more accurate. submitted by /u/AlarmingLecture0 to r/cycling [link] [comments]

People need to stop confusing e-motos with e-bikes
I’m beyond fed up with people blaming “e-bikes” for stuff that clearly involves e-motos causing reckless and unsafe behavior I don’t have anything against e-motos themselves the issue is the way a lot of them are being ridden. Around me, there are constant complaints on Nextdoor and even 911 calls about kids riding unregistered bikes, doing wheelies and stunts on 40–45 mph roads, no plates, no helmets, etc. Every single time, people jump straight to “kids on e-bikes are the problem.” That’s just wrong. Actual e-bikes (the legal ones) are limited, regulated, and not built for that kind of riding in traffic. What people are seeing are electric dirt bikes / e-motos totally different category. I’ve tried explaining the difference in my local groups, but people don’t want to hear it. They just double down, call everything an e-bike, and move on. Some have even told others to block me like I’m defending the behavior, which I’m not. submitted by /u/Zestyclose-Pop-7130 to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

[NSW] Police crush illegal e-bikes as rider left critical after police pursuit
NSW is ramping up its crackdown on illegal high-powered e-bikes just as a serious crash in Sydney’s south-west has triggered a critical incident investigation. The NSW Government has given police new powers to immediately seize and destroy e-bikes that exceed the state’s 25km/h power-assist limit. Under the rules, compliant e-bikes must cut motor assistance completely at 25km/h. Bikes found to be modified or capable of going faster can now be confiscated and crushed - even if the owner didn’t realise they were non-compliant. Police will also use portable “dyno” devices to test bikes on the spot, bypassing lengthy court processes. The tougher stance follows recent high-profile incidents, including a large group of riders crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Meanwhile, ABC News reports a 39-year-old man is in a critical but stable condition after crashing into a telegraph pole in Sadleir about 11pm on Saturday. Police had attempted to stop the rider and were following him before the crash. Officers allege he wasn’t wearing a helmet and that the bike had no pedals. A critical incident investigation is now underway, overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, and will examine the officers’ actions - including how closely they were following the rider and why the stop was initiated. The timing of both events puts the debate of how to regulate and enforce ebike safety directly in the spotlight. submitted by /u/BestTechAdvisor to r/DrivingAustralia [link] [comments]

Teen on e-bike spit on me
Around 3:45pm on 2/6 at the back bay loop trail, a teen on an e-bike rode up behind me while I was running and spit on me. He was a slim white male, looked to be about 13 years old with shaggy brown brown hair, maybe 5’5” to 5’7”. Red helmet, black or navy short sleeve shirt, black backpack, and black e-bike. He was riding with one other friend who was also on an e-bike. Please be mindful of your surroundings at Back Bay, especially if you are a woman running alone. Carry pepper spray or other self-defense tools. I hate that women can’t be in public spaces without worrying about what strange men or boys might do to them, but here we are. submitted by /u/mnsotelo to r/orangecounty [link] [comments]

Mayor Farkas: address the e-bike issue before Spring
u/JeromyYYC Dear Mayor, Every year, as it gets warm, there are "e-bikes", which are really electric motor cycles all over Calgary's paved pathways and trails (nose hill, fish creek). The people who use these vehicles don't pedal. They just have a throttle which allows them to do 40 or 50 km/h - they're just electric motor cycles. They're also often dressed in a full face helmet and sometimes body armor. If they get into a collision they won't get hurt, but will take someone out. If confronted, they will threaten violence sometimes. I know you're a trail runner - do you want to run into electric dirt bikes on nose hill doing 40 km/h? There are more and more of these "e-bikes" on the paths and trails every year. I have nothing against someone riding a pedal assist electric bike doing 20 km/h, but that's not the issue I'm asking you to address. Other jurisdictions are doing something about this: New Jersey now requires license, insurance to ride e-bikes | Driving I'd appreciate an acknowledgement if you do read this and take action. Thank you for your attention. submitted by /u/morecoffeemore to r/Calgary [link] [comments]

Steampunk deadly e bike
Thought I should post this. I built this bike from a retrospec fixie for commuting. Got hit by a car who turned left in front of me after 2 weeks of having it finished. I haven’t ridden it since, but I got it to 48 mph on a straight, smooth, empty road when I was testing it out. The motor has modes, but maximum ran 2000w at 72v. Battery is 30 amp hours, max draw 3kw. Gives me about 25 miles riding fast as hell with no pedaling, probably 40 in eco mode. Somehow the bike only suffered the bars getting twisted to the side and a flat rear tire. So no actual damage. Time of crash I was in “eco” mode, which limits to 450w at 72v, about 18mph (I was going slightly uphill) Injuries sustained: broken c7 vertebrae, laceration to the right temporal area requiring 27 staples, broken right ribs 1-5, broken pinkie that was not treated (I’m sure they were more worried about the other stuff) Now recovered, able to walk again and back to work, thank God I’m not paralyzed. Please be safe everyone and assume EVERY driver isn’t paying attention! Just one moment can change your whole life! WEAR YOUR HELMET!!!! This was a one off where I forgot my helmet in my girlfriend’s car, and I surely will just stay home if that ever happens again! submitted by /u/Matt_the_Alien to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

E-bike crackdown in Carmel Valley
Just talked to some friendly police officers at the highlands. They said there is a big effort to address the reckless kids popping wheelies and going too fast in the street. It’s really dangerous and even if they are wearing helmets, the helmets aren’t made for that level of impact. Also they act like jerks, so the negative attention is going to come with some consequences. What I learned: • the police are very aware of how annoying these kids are and are focused on dealing with them. • officers are going out on random days in plain clothes and stopping the kids to give them expensive citations or impound the bikes. The police don’t want to chase kids on e-bikes and cause an accident, so this has been the safest option. • if the bikes do get impounded, there is no way to get them back. They are sent off to auction. They aren’t like cars or motorcycles that are registered to an owner. Sucks to have a $4k bike just gone but maybe it will teach them a lesson unless the parents just buy them new ones. • kids are starting to get into bad accidents and showing up at hospitals, so it’s just a matter of time before a kid dies going 30-40mph in traffic and the bikes get banned completely. • the laws will eventually match the technology, it’s just not caught up just yet. submitted by /u/DrteethDDS to r/sandiego [link] [comments]

Police visiting Gold Coast schools over unsafe e-bike use
Gold Coast police have started working with local high schools to deal with rising safety issues linked to student e-bike use. Officers are speaking directly with students as e-bikes and e-motorbikes become one of the main ways teenagers are getting to and from school. This work sits under Operation Surety, a Queensland-wide operation targeting unsafe and unlawful e-mobility use. Police say they’re regularly seeing: Bikes capable of motorcycle-level speeds Riders without helmets Unsafe riding on footpaths and around traffic Some of these bikes no longer meet the legal definition of an e-bike and can be treated as unregistered, uninsured motorbikes under Queensland law. At schools, officers are: Inspecting student bikes for compliance Explaining the legal difference between standard e-bikes and illegal builds Demonstrating correct helmet use Talking through speed limits and shared-path behaviour One Gold Coast high school has reported more than 500 students using e-bikes daily. For many, it’s now their main form of transport. Schools say that’s changed the risk profile around school zones, footpaths and nearby roads. Police say the focus is on prevention, not punishment. submitted by /u/BestTechAdvisor to r/DrivingAustralia [link] [comments]

Bought a helmet 6 months back… but still waiting for the bike
In May this year I bought this helmet with so much excitement. I remember that day clearly… I walked out of the store feeling like, “Finally bro, this is the year I’ll get my bike.” I was already imagining early morning rides, long weekend trips, and that peace you get while riding alone. But then real life started kicking in. One by one, unexpected expenses popped up… family commitments, couple of urgent things at home, and before I realised, the money I saved for the bike just went into all that. I didn’t even have a choice at that moment. Now it’s almost 6 months… and the helmet is just kept on my shelf, brand new, not even used once. Every time I see it, I get this weird feeling half motivation, half sadness. Like bro, you’re so close but still so far because responsibilities always come first. Honestly, it hurts when you’re trying to do something for yourself but life keeps pulling you back. I know many won’t say it openly, but I know a lot of us go through this silently. Just wanted to share here because bikers understand this pain more than anyone else. Hope I’ll get my bike soon and finally give this helmet the road it deserves. submitted by /u/overthinking24x7 to r/indianbikes [link] [comments]

We skipped the second car and went for an e-cargo bike instead… best decision ever
Last year our son started daycare, when both of us were heading back to work full time. Overnight our routine doubled. Two commutes, two parents juggling pick ups and drop offs, honestly it felt like the start of a long, expensive grind. Everyone said we’d have to buy a second car but I really didn’t want to. Wrestling two wriggly kids into hot car seats twice a day, fighting traffic and paying for parking was already wearing me down. I first tried borrowing a kids’ trailer for my old bike to see if we could avoid that second car. But with the kids sitting behind me I couldn’t see what they were doing and cars coming up from behind on busy streets always made me nervous. It never felt safe and the boys hated it too. Then one morning I saw another dad ride past on a long bike with a box up front, his kids sitting there like they were on a little boat. That image stuck me. I stopped him, asked questions and that night I began my research. It took me a few weeks, talking to countless dealers, many test rides but I eventually found exactly what I was looking for. Got this front loader from Tarran with a camera that lets me see both kids directly as well as on the mid mounted screen. It also has a rear camera and radar that alert me when cars are approaching from behind. Since then almost every trip has been on this bike. Daycare drop-offs, groceries, park runs, even rainy day errands. The kids climb in by themselves now, strap on their helmets, grab their snacks and off we go. They sing, argue, point out dogs and buses. I get some exercise and a bit of breathing space before work. The best part: no more “are we there yet?” from the back seat. We still use the car for long family trips out of town and my wife drives it to work every day but around our neighbourhood the bike has completely replaced it. I get a bit of exercise, they get fresh air and we all get actual face to face time instead of screens. Any other dads here using a e-cargo bike as their main family vehicle? What’s worked for you and what’s been a disaster? submitted by /u/Tweetle_cock to r/daddit [link] [comments]

Am I wrong about e-bikes?
My wife and I have been having an argument for over a week about this: I feel that e-bikes are basically just motorcycles with pedals. I can't count high enough to express the number of under 16 year old kids I've seen tooling along at 20+mph with no helmet, not pedaling at all. I've personally been witness to what basically amounts to a motorcycle gang of tweens on their e-bikes honking their horns at a major intersection in my town, about 15 or so of them at once making a huge noise. These things have lights, horns, mirrors & clock along at 20+mph on paths and walkways. How is that NOT a motorcycle. These kids aren't old enough to drive a car and haven't taken a single damn safety course. I'd wager a good 80% aren't wearing helmets or any kind of protective gear. But they're allowed to zip along on the sidewalk. Now, all that said, I get that e-bikes, when used correctly and responsibly, allow for those who might not be able to use a fully mechanical bike to experience riding and enjoy the hobby. But I think there should be a tighter regulation on the things. My wife thinks I'm being an elitist snob about it. The argument started when I said I wouldn't allow our daughter or son to get one when they got older. I don't think I'm wrong about this one but I'm open to hearing the other side. How are these things not motorcycles? Is there a good reason they shouldn't be regulated more heavily? submitted by /u/gnglaser to r/cycling [link] [comments]

This Village in Illinois basically banned e-bikes & e-scooters
Fortunately this isn’t my town or state but…The village of Orland Park which is a suburb of Chicago (I believe) has banned e-bikes & e-scooters from ridden on streets, sidewalks, parking lots, bike paths & public parks. I blame the kids on Surrons and other emotos doing wheelies down the middle of the road cutting cars off, going 40mph down a sidewalk, not wearing helmets or any protective gear. It really ruins it for the people who are smart and respectful while riding. submitted by /u/TEGHD1 to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

An open letter to the parents of a kid with an e-bike
First, I'd like to thank the parents of the ~13-year-old boy who nearly murdered himself on the side of my car at 12:55pm today when he blew through the blind 4-way stop at Genter and Fay Streets in La Jolla Village going 35-40 mph, without the slightest intention of slowing down or giving way to the 4,000 lb car that was entering the intersection. Thank you for what? I want to thank you for letting him leave the house on that bike when you did, because had he left 1-2 seconds later, I would have had to explain to you why your child suffered a traumatic brain injury when his head impacted the side of my car at 10 mph over the speed limit, on a residential street, at a 4-way intersection, while riding the e-bike you undoubtedly bought him. Sure, he was wearing a helmet, and I'm sure the paramedics would also have thanked you, too, because it would have made it easier for them to scoop his brains up off the asphalt. Seriously, people. FFS. All sarcasm aside, this incident scared the shit out of me and then seriously pissed me off. As a parent of two boys myself (who just missed the e-bike craze), you have got to do a better job of teaching your kids that they cannot simply blaze through intersections and parking lots, over sidewalks, across medians, and basically act like total jackasses on what are effectively electric motorcycles easily capable of going double the speed limit in town. If your kid hasn't developed or demonstrated the judgment needed to buy him (it's almost always a boy) an actual gasoline-powered motorcycle, DON'T GET HIM A FUCKING E-BIKE! Just because it charges in the garage on 120v instead of filling up at Chevron doesn't change the simple physics of his soft, pink body hurtling into heavy metal objects and buildings at speeds that will render him un-alive at worst, and only quadriplegic if he's lucky. Seriously, I had to sit in the intersection for a few seconds, gripping the steering wheel with white knuckles, shaking, with my foot still jammed through the floor from activating the anti-skid brakes. I'm so glad your kid was lucky today. But tomorrow is a new day. submitted by /u/TestFlyJets to r/sandiego [link] [comments]
