Growing up, I always had the impression that medicine had become so advanced that there was a fix for almost everything except cancer, which everyone made such a big deal about because it seemed like the only disease there wasn’t a cure or truly effective treatment for. It’s astonishing to think that people are still being sent away and told to use warm compresses and some drops for dry eyes and blepharitis, especially when warm compresses only made things so much worse for me. If I had known this, I think I would have been far more careful about my eye health. I wouldn’t have spent so much time on screens, and I would have been much more diligent about eyelid hygiene, which is something I was never once told to do growing up (not even by all the optometrists I saw whenever I got new glasses.) I have so many regrets, and they haunt me. I know my eyes are as bad as they are because I was reckless, earnestly and foolishly believing that I could rely on medicine to provide a quick fix if things ever got bad, and that would be it and I could just get on with my life. It was pure ignorance on my part. But in a way, I’m not sure whether some of my lack of diligence was also a good thing. If I had been more diligent, I probably would have just done warm compresses every day, as advised by many optometrists after I got a chalazion six years ago (thinking all optometrists must know best and not questioning them). If I had followed that advice for six years, I can only imagine how much worse my dry eyes might have become and even earlier, since I have ocular rosacea, and no optometrist (or the one ophthalmologist I saw ever) told me I had it. My eyes became much worse and unbearable when I started doing warm compresses every day at the beginning of this year. hello, its midnight where i am hence im asking the question here, will take my cat to the vet first thing in the morning. He is almost 8 months old and we got him neutered today. the surgery happened around 2PM and it is 11:30PM now. first two hours after surgery - he remained still with both eyes open (we had to put some eye drops so they don’t dry out). he had erratic breathing during this time. 3rd/4th hour - started twitching trying to get up 5th hour - still could not get up. peed himself on the spot. we took him to the vet and he cleaned him up, said he looked fine. 7th hour onwards- he is now moving a little, limping. not drinking water yet. we gave him a treat and he was able to take small licks of it. he is however not able to open his mouth at all. i gave him some dry food mixed in water to soften it, and then grinded into a paste for ease of eating. it seems like he is hungry because he dunked his face into it and got it all messy, barely able to eat much (due to not being able to open his mouth). he peed again on the floor. we got the litter for him inside the room and he very clumsily went to it and peed inside it. i will try to give him the food that i made again in a bit. ive attached a photo of his face right now in this moment. one eye is droopy. he isnt sleeping either. but he isnt panting also. he is not meowing since hes not able to open his mouth. the vet seems not bothered when we took him late in the evening saying that the cat will be fine by tomorrow. is this someone elses experience too? is this normal after neutering/anesthesia? i am panicking so much and trying to find 24 hr vet options near me but i need to know if this warrants a look or if it can wait till morning before we take a look? UPDATE - I found a vet 40 mins from my place that was luckily open and they were so kind. its almost 2AM and we are just returning home. So he has eye ulcers due to his corneas drying during the procedure (cats eyes remain open under anesthesia). they have given some eye drops and it will be fine in 3-4 days. he also has 104 degree fever, which is why he was so low. they gave him an injection for that. other than that, they said he is fine. he started being active at the vets, even jumped on the counter and had an entire treat. we are headed home now and i am praying that my little baby boy feels better soonest. i was literally in tears on the way to the vet, this has been such a long day for us. thank you to everyone who encouraged me to go to the vet, if anything, i have peace of mind for tonight. we will go tomorrow morning now for his post op care (antibiotics, wound cleaning, etc). submitted by /u/Puzzled-Cheesecake34 to r/cats [link] [comments]

This sub helped me with my research so just sharing what worked for me. Background - - long low dose accutane in my 20's. Now in 30s. Some people say there is link. So just added for those who have similar history. ​​​​​​​​Always remember having sensitive eyes after that time. Got worse over years. It got bad enough 6months ago I was struggling to keep eyes open at work in aircon. I took more proactive measures. ​​​​​​​​​​​​ I had tried lid cleaning. Hot compresses and dry eye drops preservative free no changes. I went to optometist to get free check. Lifted lids. All bumpy. Possible allergy. I don't have any known allergies but took note. Also the lower lid oil grades were blocked /not excreting well. Water evaporative test showed quick water loss. So it was an oil lipid problem​. I got myself some opti Mel munuka honey drops and gel. Some cod liver oil. Stopped eating dairy. I eat Paleo with rice. I used the gel morning and night. I used the drops when my eyes felt sore or inflamed at work. This continues daily for 3 months. Then sporadically as eyes were feeling fine. Which is to say I forgot I had sore dry eyes. Lol. Now I only use if I'm tired and eyes need some soothing. That was 2 months ago. ​ Summary---I feel the opti Mel was the heavy hitter here. It reduced inflammation and gave my eyes a chance to heal and balance. It can be a vicious cycle where eyes are inflamed so can't produce needed oil which the eye needs to reduce inflammation. The omega certainly can't be dismissed. I'm not certain on dietary changes impact but cutting dairy reduced subtle aches on body which could have been a sign of inflammation. Hope this may help someone. Tried regular eye drops, but they just didn’t help. My eyes were burning, dry, and I couldn’t even play for more than 30 minutes without needing a break. I ended up quitting simracing for 6 years. Then I found out about gel drops. Man, these are the stuff. When you put them in, it feels like you're underwater for a bit. But after that? You can race for an hour without blinking. I've been meaning to write this up for a while and someone in the comments of another post recently reminded me to actually do it. If you're deep in the dry eye struggle right now, I hope this helps. I know how hopeless it can feel. My backstory It started during my last 1.5 years of college. I was working more hours at a remote internship (tons of screen time) and at the same time I was using over the counter Differin adapalene for my skin. I now believe the retinoid played a role in triggering things. It started mostly in my right eye.. felt like it was constantly scratched or something. As my screen time ramped up for school and work it just kept getting worse. At the time I was a broke college student so I could only afford basic stuff like OTC eye drops and some supplements. Once I graduated and started working full-time I finally had income to start trialing more serious treatments. The full timeline College years (limited budget): OTC eye drops, omega-3 fish oil, various supplements, sterilized water eye flushes, moisture chamber glasses Full-time work in Arizona: IPL light therapy, Radiofrequency gland expression/melting, PRP eye drops (1 month only, couldn't continue unfortunately), continued with supplements and everything from before Moved to Austin TX: Started Cequa (cyclosporine). Within days to weeks it started helping significantly. The immediate burning triggers the tear reflex which helped with hydration, but at the cost of making my eyes noticeably red. I didn't care at that point honestly.. I just needed to be functional for work and life. Continued Cequa for about a year. During this time I also used moisture chamber goggles during heavy screen sessions, sterilized water flushes as needed, and picked up one of those heated humidifying eye goggles you use 1-2x a day to help melt the glands. Those felt great and were nice to have on hand but they also gave me red eyes and skin from the heat. The transition off medication: After about a year on Cequa I had plateaued in a pretty good spot but the redness from application was really starting to bother me. I had Lipiflow done then soon after tried Vevye for about 2 weeks.. less redness which was great, but it felt slightly grittier/oilier in my eyes and maybe a touch less effective than Cequa. I phased it out, had a rough week or two with some dry eye days, and then things just.. normalized. That was about 3 months ago. I haven't used any prescription drops since. Haven't even been wearing my moisture chamber goggles. Honestly it feels like a miracle. My ranking (most to least helpful) The heavy hitters: Cequa .. I genuinely believe this did the bulk of the work getting me to a stable place. If you can afford it or get it covered, it's worth trying. Yes the burning and redness sucks but the tear reflex it triggers was an immediate quality of life improvement for me. Moisture chamber glasses/goggles .. Before I had access to real treatment, these were my lifeline. Blocking airflow at the computer made a massive difference. One of the two things that helped me survive the early years. Sterilized water eye flushes .. The other lifesaver from the early days. I ordered bottles meant for eye flushes on Amazon. In bad moments these helped SO much more than OTC drops without the rebound effect. Reducing screen time and blocking airflow .. I'm a software developer so screens are unavoidable, but I've been more intentional about breaks. Honestly the rise of AI coding tools (claude-code, cursor, etc) has reduced how long I'm staring directly at code which sounds silly but has genuinely helped. I also still wear red light glasses or regular glasses at my desk just to block some of the direct airflow hitting my eyes. Vevye .. Helped me bridge the gap off Cequa. Less redness than Cequa which was nice. I only used it for about 2 weeks so hard to say how effective it would be long term. Probably helped but I can't draw a direct line: Moving from Arizona to Austin TX (humidity difference is real) Diet changes and exercising more IPL light therapy Radiofrequency gland melting Lipiflow (done in Austin) Omega-3 fish oil and supplements Heated humidifying eye goggles (felt amazing, convenient at home, but hard to isolate the impact) PRP eye drops (only got to trial for 1 month so I never saw the full potential.. they were definitely better than OTC drops though) What actually made things worse: OTC eye drops .. these would help for maybe 10-15 minutes and then there was a rebound effect that left my eyes feeling worse than before. I stopped using them entirely and switched to the sterilized water flushes which were way better. Video games Screens in general Flying (AC, dry air, eyes open watching movies) Where I'm at now 3 months medication-free. No moisture chamber goggles (still keep them in case I ever need them -- but I just haven't). Just limiting screen time where I can and wearing glasses at my desk for minor airflow protection. After years of trying everything I could get my hands on, I'm in a place I honestly didn't think was possible. I know everyone's dry eye is different and what worked for me might not work for you. But if you're in the thick of it right now, don't give up. It took me 3+ years and a LOT of trial and error to get here. Happy to answer any questions. I hope this continues and partially didn't want to write this in case not to jinx it hahaha. But worst case it comes back in the future and I know the treatment plan that works for me. TL;DR: Dealt with dry eye for 3+ years, started in college from heavy screen time and possibly triggered by Differin retinoid. Tried everything from OTC drops to IPL to radiofrequency to PRP and Lipiflow. The biggest game changers for me were Cequa (used for ~1 year), moisture chamber glasses, and sterilized water eye flushes. Recently transitioned off Cequa through a short Vevye trial and have been medication-free and stable for 3 months. OTC eye drops actually made things worse for me due to rebound effects. Hey everyone, I’m a 33-year-old guy from Germany and I’ve been dealing with dry eyes for about 15 years now. At this point I honestly feel pretty lost and I’m hoping maybe someone here has been through something similar. My main issue seems to be that my tear film breaks up very quickly. My doctors usually measure my TBUT between 3 and 7 seconds. Symptoms I deal with: • Burning and eye pain • Very sensitive eyes • Sometimes pretty strong pain during the day • Lots of discharge / “sleep” around my eyes in the morning • Dry air or air conditioning makes things worse • Reading on my phone at night in bed often triggers a lot of pain Things I’m currently doing: • Warm compresses every morning and evening • Lid massage / expressing my meibomian glands • Regular artificial tears during the day • Eye ointment at night Things I’ve tried before: • Many different artificial tears • Lipid eye drops • Steroid drops • IPL treatment for the meibomian glands I even went to Dr. M. in Munich Germany, who is pretty well known in the dry eye field and does research on it. Her main recommendation was IPL and lid hygiene. Unfortunately IPL didn’t help me at all. Right now it just feels like nothing really improves things, and some days the pain during the day is honestly pretty hard to deal with. I’m starting to feel really frustrated because I’ve tried a lot and I still don’t know what else to do. Has anyone else experienced this? I have been using tretinoin for a some months now in strength 0.025%. ive experienced flakiness, dry skin and i remedied this by moisturizing. What I didn't expect is the changes in my tear production. My eye dryness has gotten so severe, it has become a burden on my day to day life. It is causing more more than mild discomfort. I went to an optometrist before I realized it could be the tretinoin and he sees my meibomian glands are clogged and suggested warm compresses and lubricating eye gel at night and eye drops during the day. I've discontinued use of tret for now. Im just curious if anyone else noticed this! 🫩 Edit: I had a dry eye syndrome diagnosis years ago, very mild. I should have titled it "i think tret worsened my dry eye syndrome." it has never been such a burden that I had to discontinue wearing contacts. Hi everyone, So 12 years ago I have done the biggest mistake of my life which is LASIK. Now I'm suffering so much that I have quit my job due to eye pain and constant intolerance of screens, the weather, and I don't even know what to do with my life. I can't work outdoors, I can't work indoors, and I feel absolutely miserable in my life. Right now I am doing Restasis. This is the second year of me doing Restasis, I am seeking sclerals outside my country as it isnt available here, and I just finished my 100th course of steroid eye drops because my eyes were extremely inflamed and I have just done my second session of IRPL and they did this tear check and here are the results: Dry Eye / Tear Film Evaluation Results (Post-LASIK) TFSE (Tear Film Surface Evaluation): Right eye: 110 (abnormal / poor) Left eye: 66 (borderline abnormal) NIBUT (Non-Invasive Tear Break-Up Time): Right eye: 8.7 seconds Left eye: 8.3 seconds (

Just wanted to share my experience for anyone in the future Googling about these issues. Feel welcome to share you experience as well. Obviously, we are aware that Vyvanse can cause significant dehydration. What my doctors didn't warn me about was the effects of dehydration that I've had to deal with. Dehydration (and Vyvanse in general) can cause bad dry mouth. I've taken month-long breaks multiple times and it seems that the dryness continues. You absolutely MUST drink adequate water daily, but also: • Dry mouth lozenges at night • Xylitol gum (up to 5 grams daily) • Floss, if you don't already. Take very good care of your dental health. I had cavities between all of my teeth and my dentist attributed this to the Vyvanse, not drinking enough water, not using lozenges at night/gum during the day, in addition to drying myself up like crazy with daily Claritin and Flonase use. The allergy meds and the Vyvanse really dried me up, so be very careful and ask your doctor about using certain allergies medications. Regarding high RBC (Red Blood Cell count/Polycythemia), this is definitely from the overuse of allergy meds, plus Vyvanse, and not drinking enough water. The way my Dr and I found out the actual cause was I switched to Flonase only, upped my water intake and recorded it, started actually working out instead of being a couch sloth, and I cut down on processed foods and red meats. My tests started returning within normal ranges. **Seriously, the allergy meds were the biggest thing for me. All these years, overdoing it on allergy meds, really messed me up, so I'm hoping to help someone that may be going through the same thing. Dry eyes- I have no idea how to make this better, so I just treat the symptoms. I stare at a screen all day for work, so I set up a cold humidifier to add moisture to the air, use lubricating eye drops and blue-light glasses. At night, I use lubricating ointment and a cold humidifier. **You *must clean your humidifier often, at least weekly, to keep yourself safe. I like to take mine apart and let it air dry when it's emptied so nothing grows in the wet environment when it's not in use. ETA: There seems to be a few a-holes in the comments assuming things. For anyone wanting to comment about dehydration, let me stop you. There are some people in this world who are, for example, autistic and don't feel dehydration in the same way you do. People whose urine is clear but are somehow still dehydrated enough for their mouth to be dry. I had to have blood test results tell me I'm dehydrated and adjusted my water intake from there. Secondly, none of these are recent issues. I stated earlier in the post that I am making this post for future individuals researching their own side effects of Vyvanse as I previously dealt with these issues and have since fixed them. I'm not looking for any input from the negative assholes with their holier-than-thou attitude, commenting only to try an make someone feel like shit. You're missing the point of the entire post because you are apparently bored enough to try and shame an anonymous internet user. I do not need people telling me to hydrate more when I already do. my sweet boy Ube just went thru a catastrophic weekend when both of his beautiful eyes started to bubble up. on monday when i brought him to ER, they said his eyes had completely ruptured, but they had no specialty so nothing they could do except for prescribing antibiotics and pain meds… on tuesday, we took him to see an ophthalmologist, where they said he’s completely blind now, and eye removal surgery is recommended to prevent pain. however, ube’s systemic health hasn’t been great. he had a pretty bad heart condition where anesthesia could be life threatening. there’s not much we could do now other than giving him antibiotics, amniotic eye serum and hoping to see the ulcer heal. i’m completely devastated because things escalated so quickly after the FIP diagnosis that caused inflammation to both of his eyes. no one told me to help him put on cones right away, so over night, his eyes dried up and the poor baby scratched them😭 now he’s been slowly adapting to the dark - he could locate his food bowl, litter box and walk around, but he spent most his days sleeping and hiding under the bed. i’m torn between consistently giving him eye drops to sustain his eyes in hopes of the ulcer healing without surgery, and going through the risk of losing him forever. does anyone have experiences with cats eye ulcer healing without surgery? would appreciate any advice submitted by /u/haruka_kudo to r/blindcats [link] [comments]

I can't believe I'm writing this post. But here we are. I was suffering from dry eye for almost 10 years and tried everything under the sun. Every drop, fish oil, compresses, drugs. Even used scleral lenses for about a year. I traveled out of country to visit the renowned eye institute in Boston. Where I was delivered an annoying diagnosis. A bit of this a bit of that. Mild corneal neuralgia. Less tear glands than the average person. And some mild inflammation. I was feeling very defeated after that appointment and accepted my fate of just having consistent pain in my eyes. But I kept trying different stuff and eventually I found something that worked for me. And here it is: Vibration on the nose. Yes this sounds insane but let me explain. I stopped all drops. Instead when I'm feeling dryness I use the back of an electric toothbrush (make sure it's clean) to massage the nerves of the nose and below the eyes. This triggers a lot of tears. I do it a couple times per day but things have improved so much I sometimes go days now without doing it. I found this by doing some desperate searching on chat gpt as a possible therapy for dry eye. And you are probably as surprised as I am that it did anything at all. Let alone be the thing that I will credit as the number 1 most crucial fix for my eyes. Lid wipes. I dunno how much these help but I've been using them every 2nd or third day. And since I'm in a good place after so many years of pain I'm not willing to stop just in case they are contributing to the solution. Hot compresses. I've been using these pretty regularly for the last 10 years so they definitely don't fix anything for me on their own. However when I was first getting started with the nose vibration I also combined it with a hot compress. The idea is to soften the oils and the get the tears flowing with the vibration. So same as the lid wipes I'm not sure how important it is but I'm not going to stop. The end. Hope this helps someone else. I was fumbling through my blurriness while getting ready for a zoom class, in far too much of a rush, so of course I grabbed the wrong one … I swear I’m usually far more careful about what I put into my eyes! So I started class about 20 minutes late due to needing to flush out my eye. Don’t worry, I’m not hurt, just had to deal with a little stinging and did the flush as a precautionary measure. Apologies in advance if this has already been asked: I have chronic dry eye due to an autoimmune disease, and now I’m on a course of Accutane which is drying them out even more. I have almost no tear film and my eyeballs are on FIRE. My ophthalmologist said the best he can offer is warm compress and preservative-free drops. I’m using Refresh Celluvisc now because the Refresh Optive Mega 3 felt super oily and made my vision very blurry. Is there anything more hydrating/long lasting than this that won’t feel like I just poured olive oil in my eyeballs? I only get an hour or so out of the Celluvisc.
