I know it’s just another floral embroidery, but I wanted to do some flowers that grow native (actually, no idea if they’re native, but they were in my PNW garden when we moved in, and I haven’t yet killed them in 5 years, so I say native enough). Forget-me-nots, strawberry geranium, and lily-of-the-valley. I started this a year ago, hated how the lily-of-the-valleys turned out, and stuffed it in a cabinet for 10 months. Recently had a lot of hours sitting in waiting rooms, so decided to power through. I recently had a 6 hour layover in Amsterdam and visited the Keukenhof botanical garden, so wanted to share my experiences in case anyone is looking for long layover ideas. I originally planned on taking the train into the city and walking around for a couple of hours, but changed my mind since its Spring and the beginning of the flower blooming season. Couple of callouts: Purchase your timed entry to Keukenhof in advance, which gives you a 30-min window to enter. I gave myself an hour buffer from scheduled landing to entry, which worked out perfectly. Keukenhof is only a ~20 min drive from the airport. Uber is readily available at both the airport and Keukenhof. The garden offers combined shuttle bus tickets, but given the limited time, I needed speed and flexibility. I was worried about long security lines at the airport, so I booked a free security time slot at Schiphol airport. The line was a breeze. I only had 1:45 in the garden, which was barely enough time to walk around the park. Yey I did it I made more flower gworls— This was totally fun to do with the new style, and I can’t wait to make more! This year I made a baby quilt for my dear friends who 1) moved and gave up most of their garden 2) requested a possum so they could put the baby in its mouth. Photo credits to my partner. Pattern sources: As per the key in the last picture, a lot of the florals came from BurlapBlossomPattern on Etsy. The bee came from HeartlandQuiltery, also on Etsy (I just looked at the photo and made it from sight but I have bought it in the middle of making this post out of guilt). The Tulip/Carolina Lily mashup was similarly made from sight and on graph paper. The possum was originally drawn by possum_mood and I popped it into QuiltAssistant and made my first ever paper pieced pattern. Possum_mood never responded to my DM; as this is a gift for a baby and I'm not profiting hopefully they will not find and kill me. Everything else I made up! Mix of traditional and foundation paper pieced, inspired by garden staples and common California flowers. Oxalis pes caprae (the flower over the worm) is an invasive but one I'm nostalgic about. Fabric notes: There are a lot of Peppered Cottons in this. The background is Jadeite and I forget the names of all the rest. The backing fabric is from a Sewing Guild bag sale. I'm a big fan of ditsy print backings for baby quilts because they hide a lot of sins (on my part and the baby's part). Much of the pinks, oranges, and reds are from a great Buy Nothing score. Boot notes: Chipped a bone in my ankle. On the mend. Stylish isn't it I have been quilting for two years. Firsts on this project: buying patterns, paper piecing, very dense quilting, big-stitch binding (a first on something bigger than a potholder). My wife and I started a wild flower chaos garden, this is whats growing. There is this beautiful pink flower, lots of vines growing, grass and some weeds I'm sure. The really weird thing is what is this weird white fungus or mushroom like thing growing? Its actually attached to the ground and seems to be growing and must have popped up fast because I didn't see it before. I just moved into my first home in late May and the previous homeowner has this lovely garden that she obviously put a lot of care and love into. I've never had a garden before (i have lots of house plants though) and I'm at a complete loss and feeling very overwhelmed with keeping up with it. I want to keep encouraging flowers and blooming and try to keep pests away but don't know if I'm doing it right. Also there's an empty zone right in the front, as you can see, and don't know if it's a good idea to try to plant anything there now since we're in the beginning of July (zone 8b US) I've read up on deadheading and have been doing that with the rose bush. Should I be doing that with the hibiscus, coneflowers and bergamot too? Should I be watering this more than once every other day? There's a drip system installed and along with watering the yard once every other day, i also allow it to drip water for 15min. The lilly plant was blooming beautifully in June but just stopped and none of the blooms have returned. They would only bloom for a day and then wilt and then another would appear. Idk I want to take care of this garden and help it flourish as much as I can but being a new homeowner, learning how to fix all the things AND learning how to take care of this beautiful garden feels like a lot. I just want to keep it alive and maybe help it look better since I hate having that big empty space in the front. Originally posted to r/TwoHotTakes Thanks to u/queenlegolas for suggesting this BoRU TRIGGER WARNING: Destruction of property Original Post June 21, 2025 My husband (35m) and I (29f) went on holiday for a week and just got back tonight. My in laws stayed at our house and looked after our dog for us while we were away. We got back tonight to find that MIL has completely changed our garden without our consent while we’ve been gone. We have a small-ish paved garden with some raised flower beds, a couple of trees and some nice flowers and bushes, most were left by previous owners and we’ve cared for them the best we can, weeded, laid wood chip and kept the garden tidy. While we’ve been away, an entire tree on the right hand side has been removed and is now just a stump, with new shrubs and flowers planted in its place. My roses, which I enjoyed caring for, have been cut to a stump with nothing left, the trellis completely bare. The two other trees have been cut back dramatically, all their flowers and buds are gone, the huge flowers on one bush have been cut off, and the garden feels very exposed and barren. The tree that was cut to a stump flowered beautifully in summer and attracted lots of butterflies, and I’m big on biodiversity so that was so sad, and the roses I’m devastated about as my uncle was helping me care for them. Various other jobs have been done like cutting a small patch of grass we have at the back, and jet washing the paving slabs, which I’m grateful for. It’s important to note, nothing like this was discussed before we left, we only asked MIL and FIL to care for our dog, nothing more. MIL mentioned patching some missing sealant on the windows of our shed for us, that was all. I really struggle with anxiety and needing to be in control and I’ve been sobbing this evening, I’m devastated. MIL is asleep and FIL is staying out of it, I’m sleeping downstairs with our dog because I can’t stand to be away from her either. It’s 3am but I can’t sleep. What do I do? Am I right to be upset? Update June 22, 2025 Thank you to everyone who left comments on my original post, it was really helpful to see everyone acknowledging that this was an overstep and suggesting that my husband lead on the conversation. To answer some questions, I think the tree was a Buddleia which I think is usually a bush but it was quite mature and had a trunk about 8 inches wide and was around 2/3 meters tall and very much looked like a tree, sorry if I gave the impression it was like a huge tree that required a tree surgeon but it wasn’t a tiny bush either it was still a task to chop it down, and they didn’t hire anyone they did it themselves. Thank you for all the suggestions about tree law, I’ve learned something new! Thank you to all that said the roses might be salvageable, they are literally a stump only 3 inches tall but I’ll try the blood and bone mixture to promote growth and try to bring them back. MIL has done things like this before but not to this extreme, she gets bored and one thing leads to another and you can tell part of her knows she’s gone too far but she tries to justify it anyway. It’s well known in the family that MIL can’t sit still and finds jobs to do to be “helpful” but to my knowledge she hasn’t done anything this big before. Now for the update. In the morning my husband spoke to MIL alone and laid out how this was really inappropriate for her to make changes to our garden without permission or even notification. He said she offered some explanations as to why she did it, but did acknowledge it wasn’t right to go ahead and cut down trees without asking. He posed the question many of you suggested of how would she feel if we looked after her home and repainted a room, or chopped a tree down in her garden, or removed a fence? I think that made her realise. He asked her to speak to me directly and apologise as I said to him I needed an apology and for her to acknowledge that what she did was wrong. Later MIL spoke to me privately and said she was “sorry I was so upset by the garden” and I said thank you. Her explanation for the tree is that she was doing some pruning (didn’t ask her to but anyway…) and when she trimmed the branches they were black inside. They went to a garden centre and got advice and were told it was this kind of bug infestation? MIL is adamant she was being bitten by whatever bug it is as well. I don’t know, the tree was green and healthy looking to me. Anyway at no point did they speak to us despite going to all this trouble, then they decided to just chop it down since it was “infested”. She did at least say the words “I know we should have called you or asked”. Then I said “and the roses? I loved those and my uncle was helping me keep them going” and she said the dog had been chewing on them - bear in mind these are in a raised bed she’d have to jump up at to get to, and apparently she yelped and hurt herself on the thorns. So obviously the logical conclusion isn’t to keep an eye on the puppy (a 4m old lab) but to chop down the flowering roses… That was the end of that discussion but later in the day she and FIL went to a garden centre to try to replace both the Buddleia and the roses but couldn’t find the right kind. They have said that if we find the plants we want they will buy them for us so we can replace them. Things are civil again, I’m still hurt and I hate how my garden looks, especially since other trees and flowering bushes were cut so far back all the colour is gone. It feels very exposed and like a new build/show room garden before any character is added, but I can’t make the plants regrow and replanting the tree would mean removing the stump they left so I cba. Personally I will never allow MIL and FIL to be alone in my house again, and they will not be asked to look after our dog unless it’s at their own home. I do have a generally good relationship with both MIL and FIL and they are generous and kind people, but this lack of respecting boundaries has been an ongoing issue especially since we got our house, which they did a huge amount of work on with us and for which I’m extremely grateful. I do however feel like this contributes to how they view the house and garden as a project and not as our home despite the fact we have lived in the finished house for 2 years now, and might be why they thought it was no big deal to go around messing with our garden. My husband has been on my side throughout this and took us all (me, him and the dog) out for a Sunday roast today to cheer us up. He’s upset with his parents as well and has done his best to make me feel better and validate my feelings. He’s the best. She has a fairly old fashioned view on mental health and neurodivergence so I don’t think she will ever recognise it in herself. This is why I say I don’t think she is acting maliciously, just without understanding or recognition for how it might affect others. I’m not a professional so I don’t feel right giving her an armchair diagnosis in a Reddit post, which is why I tried to explain it as she can’t sit still, but yes it’s most likely ADHD. Both my husband and I suspect we may be neurodivergent as well and I have been professionally assessed for autism but not diagnosed, so I do appreciate the mental whiplash that realisation can bring. I'd like to make it at least cohesive because we don't want the property value to go down in case we need to move. I also would rather just throw in seeds than plant individual plants because it's such a big area but I'm open for other suggestions. I would like to know what kind of flower seeds can I actually throw around and still thrive in shade, and what kind of pathways would be the most economical and low maintenance? I'm not sure free woodchips would be great for pathways since it's sloped and if we get a lot of rain, it will just get washed out but I probably use for for the plant areas. Anyway, I don't even know where to start so I'm just here looking for suggestions and what to look out for when making shade gardens. So, my mom was digging in our garden today, planting flowers and she dug up two phones. We have no idea how long they’ve been there, but we know they got there in the past year. They were found right next to each-other, we initially thought they could have been dumped over our fence (we live right next to a funeral home, and people come and go a lot) but these were BURIED The apple phone is a iphone 14 pro max, I have no idea what model the ATAT phone is. During this time, SILs grandfather got sick, so she traveled to stay with her family. I was left in charge of feeding her dog, my SIL has always grown beautiful flowers, and succulents, she knows how much I admire her green thumb. Before she left she cut all the heads off her roses, and this is where I made my mistake at the time I did not know you could cut the heads off roses and make more grow. So when I was over feeding the dog I noticed more growing and was amazed, then the restrictions in my country where lifted, my husband and I decided to throw together a quick wedding ceremony, the idea just came to me to use the roses she'd grown, thinking that has she'd cut them she'd not know I'd taken any. As I was over cutting them, I remembered the succulents and decided to grab a few in their pots to use as centre pieces. We'd always wanted to get married in my grandmothers church and venue hall, which was 2 hours away from our home and SILs home, SIL decided she'd come back for the wedding, but would fly into that local airport, then go straight to the local hotel instead of going home when she landed then driving to the wedding and back all in one day. The wedding itself went beautifully, she was happy and I was so happy, everyone was happy. We get to the after party and SIL notices the succulents, and gets very angry asking if they're hers, and how could I do that. She started trying to snatch them up, unfortunately this caused a light fuss while I asked at her to stop, that she was ruining my wedding, while I grabbed at the succulent. She loudly said "You're stealing from me" My family wrongly took this to mean they could take the succulents, the ones they didn't take did end up damaged as people touched the leaves and squeezed them. SIL took all my succulent centres that she could and left in a huff, after that the party died down, pretty much everyone in her family took her side, where as my family think it's flowers it's ridiculous. When she arrived home the next day she noticed the roses gone, and send a message saying how could I steal her plants without permissions, and that she was "sick" of me over stepping all the time. Personally I feel like they're just plants, they will grow back, and it's a shame for her to have spoilt the after party when she could have just left the succulents and most people would have ignored them. But I also understand she spends a lot of time and money growing many of these plants and they are her pasttime that I should have asked to use them TLDR: Borrowed some flowers without permission, but SIL shouted at me during my wedding party. Finally finished piecing this monster (91x103). Hexies are 1 3/4 finished. It started out as a lap quilt and gradually grew. It took 7 years to piece from start to finish—I took several breaks from it along the way. A girl can only take so much, and other projects had to be fit in. With the exception of one or two flowers it is all Tula Pink. None of the flowers are exactly the same. Unless I missed something, two flowers may have the same petals but they will have different centers. No more than two of a kind have identical petals, I think. I wanted them all completely different but I gave that up in favor of actually finishing during my lifetime. I’m going to do a white backing fabric because i am planning on doing some big stitch quilting around some of the flowers with embroidery thread and I didn’t want weird circles of odd colors randomly across some print and think white will show that aspect off better. Like a whole cloth quilt on the backside. I’m torn between FMQ inside the flowers on the machine or quilting by hand. If I quilt by hand, it could be another seven years before I finish. I really want to start the Tula Nova quilt before I die, so I’m leaning to machine quilting. I plan to square off the edges—definitely the top and bottom. I may leave the sides. I’m pretty sure this is the only Grandmother’s Flower Garden I’ll ever do, so I’d love to hear quilting suggestions, ideas for finishing the edges, or any advice you have to share! submitted by /u/tbrummy to r/quilting [link] [comments]

the patches are 3x3 sorted by flower type with one of each colour, but only the roses completely fill one patch. i arranged the colours the same way on each patch (yellow bottom left, red bottom middle etc....) and when one kind of flower was missing a specific colour I replaced it with a shrub of that colour (except for black, where I chose a red shrub type). I have been obsessed with a neighbors yard since I moved into my home. By obsessed I mean utterly moved by its beauty, mind blown by the complicated layouts, and fully touched by the obvious love and dedication this gardener has for every single plant/flower. I’ve been patiently waiting to meet this mysterious owner for almost a year now; but I just couldn’t seem to ever catch them when they were outside. Last weekend I had 6 people visiting from out of town. Whenever I have guests I walk them past this yard (did I mention I was obsessed?) which always results in a full jaw drop. By some miracle, the owner was outside tending to some plants on this recent walk! I likely scared the crap out of him with my slightly psycho level of excitement 😂. At risk of sharing too much info about a stranger, I’ll try and keep the story short. His wife was very sick and could not leave the house so he wanted to create a magical, healing, loving haven for her to be surrounded by. I don’t know the details but I know she ended her life 6 years ago, yet he decided to continue caring for and loving this haven he made her. It’s what keeps him connected to her. Are y’all crying yet? Because I am. He invited myself plus my 6 visitors to walk through his entire property. He even retreated inside stating we should stay for as long as we dusted and to enjoy it as much as we can. The yard is laid out in a way that makes it hard to see much more than 25% of his property from the street, so it felt like a true honor experiencing his hidden alcoves of lilies and paths of fuchsias. Here’s where I need some help, because I’m extremely new to the plant and flower world (aka ignorant). I’d like to leave something at his door as a token of appreciation for generously sharing his space and memories with us. It really was special. I’ve been thinking a small plant, but which one?!? I just don’t want it to read like I picked up a half dead succulent from Lowe’s due to some neighborly obligation. I should also note that it doesn’t have to be a plant, Im open to any ideas! My husband M35 is a bank clerk and I F29 have WFH job which I barely bear since I'm an active outdoor person and like doing gardening stuff in particular. I figured since I have background in gardening I decided to use our spacious backyard to grow flowers and sell them online after arranging and organizing them into bouqets. When I brought this up with my husband he said this was the worst idea ever, adding this would be major waste of time and money and suggested I look for a 2nd job. I didn't listen and started my business little by little. In a matter of 18 months it started bringing decent money and I gained customers. My husband offered to look at how much I was able to make in the past months and was impressed. The other day he was standing with his drink while I was checking my flowers. He talked about what a good job I was doing keeping "our" business "flowing". I corrected him about it being our business and reminded him about how little faith he had in my potential to make decent money out of growing, selling cut flowers. He was like "Well...I didn't honestly think your little gardening hobby was going to get anywhere but now that business is "flourishing" I want my fair share of profit and won't settle for less than 50%" I was puzzled I asked why he thought he should get any share of profit let alone 50%. His answer was that I was using his soil to grow my flowers on. I said this is our house/our soil not just his since we're married and both our names are on the title. He was like "actually I owned this house long before you came along so it's technically mine!" I replied that he must be aware it'll be split in half in case of seperation. He laughed and joked about how silly I was for "hinting" seperation just because he was asking for something that he so richly deserves which is 50% of the profit. I said no and that he was delusional to ask cause even his soil alone doesn't magically grow my flowers there's a lot of work to it from picking, buying seeds, taking time, effort to care for them. Collecting, triming, and selling them while all he does is sit back. I said it didn't matter to him when I started using "his soil" why now? He said it always matters when money is involved!. We had an argument about it and he apologized BUT ONLY for approaching the subject rudely but still wants 50%. He's been silent about it since after stating that he already said what he needed to say and I needed to make the right decision. AITA? To clarify my husband and I both have our own salaries, we contribute equally towards expenses. It's his idea since he had a divorce before. He still has things that he owns alone which isn't bad since money has never been an issue.
