Steps to take to convert rock garden into a native wildflower garden?
I've lived in this house for about 5 years now and I am only just now getting around to formally doing the flower beds. In my defense, I think I was only just recently hit with the gardening bug... Probably something hormonal as I'm aging LOL But I would like to convert our old crusty dusty rock beds into living, breathing members of the local ecosystem. I struck a deal with my lawn-lovin' father, who I co-own this house with, that if I can have full control over the flower beds and plant whatever I want there, I'll stop bugging him about how much lawns are ugly money sinks and don't contribute ecologically to anything... and I'd reluctantly help him care for it. He agreed and now I am hyped to get started, but it's going to be an uphill battle from the get go. Ya see, the previous owners laid down a bunch of landscaping fabric and put crushed rocks in all of the beds to make a rock garden. I hate rock gardens. Almost as useless ecologically as lawns except maybe bugs could hide there easier, I don't really know and I don't really care, I just want the rocks and the fabric gone. The rocks I plan to offer for free curbside, after using it to fill out some of the empty spots near where we store our tools and trash cans. I don't plan to do anything there, so I figured I'd give it some tlc and then spread out some fresh rocks to make it look decent again and then get rid of the excess. Once I break out our old broken screen door and put it on top of a lowes bucket and sift all of the rocks out of the bed, and pull up all of the landscaping fabric, what are my next steps to make it into a viable pollinator buffet? I've got a few free seeds from a co-op that may not be native, but are definitely not invasive. I'm thinking I'll need to condition the soil so that it is more suitable to growing stuff in, but I won't know until I get down in there. Fortunately, it's already lined with bricks that are actually quite nice, so I'll have no problem incorporating them into my designs. I really want to do a good job and eventually get my yard to be a certified wildlife habitat, but I know that's some ways away. ~ Some key details: I live in RI, in zone 7a. I have a bed that is roughly 50sqft on the west-facing side of my house. Full sun only, there is nothing protecting this bed from the harsh summer sun. I've another bed that is about 30sqft that is north-facing and gets some evening sun, so I'd call it partial-sun. North-west corner of my property is a mature black oak tree that has a brick ring that I would like to dispose of and would like to convert about 1ft-1ft6in around it to flowers as well. North-west corner of the house itself, I have two arbor vitaes that are kind of ugly and wouldn't mind getting rid of, but they're not my top priority at the moment so they can stay, but I think it bears mentioning that the 50sqft bed and 30sqft bed are joined here and that's where my hose attachment and the electric meter is for the house, so I need to tone down the fun in that corner for utilitarian purposes. In my backyard, I have one bed that would be a lot more work to convert, but could be worth it. It is east-facing and gets very little sun, but it's an ugly disaster zone right now because my dog found a mouse there one time and it's been 3 years and he still digs in that same spot hoping to find another mouse. I don't want to accidentally find mice, so I am toying with the idea of cleaning this rock bed up, but leaving it as a rock bed, at least while my dog is alive. The south-facing side of my house has a young tree, I believe it is a young red maple although I am not too sure. I've also got some lilies of the valley there and it's where my dog goes to the bathroom, so I've little interest in doing anything there for the time being. It's on the back burner. The plants I picked up at the library are: Morning Glory - Heavenly Blue Morning Glory - Grandpa Ott Morning Glory - Scarlett O'Hara Convolvulus - Blue Enchantment Rudbeckia - Goldsturm Zinnia - Envy I know this was a lot of details, probably a lot of unnecessarily yapping, but as you can tell I am quite excited... I have a hard time finding any information online about converting rock bed into flower beds because most people want to opposite apparently -_- Makes me really sad :( submitted by /u/_OhiChicken_ to r/gardening [link] [comments]

300 lbs jade I polished
Ground and polished a piece of British Colombia Jade. It took around 70 hours to complete. I keep it outside the front door in a small rock garden. I live in Vancouver Canada. The rough piece was posted on Marketplace a four hour drive away. The shape looked interesting. It was a river rock so I knew it would be stable and take a polish as it had survived the glaciers and erosion. It had a 1/2 thick rind on it from weathering that needed to be ground away. The seller was doing demolition work on an old house and salvaged it . This was topping a driveway post. Although there are some nice areas in it, It is landscaping quality jade. Not really worth the expense to cut it up. I first polished at test area to get an idea of color,,translucense and stability. It has nice color variation and interesting "fracture" lines. That is a Makita counter top polisher. I started with a sintered 30 grit diamond grinding disc. Then 50 and 100 pads to set the final shape and remove grinding marks. Followed by 200, 400, 800, 1200, 3000, 6000, and finally 10000 grit pads. I did a small area with chrome oxide and leather but the minimal difference wasn't worth the expense as it lives outside. It glows fairly well at 10000 grit. submitted by /u/leftcoast987 to r/MineralPorn [link] [comments]

Rock Garden Help
Hate to make another post on this but I’ve done a lot of reading and troubleshooting but just can get it working. Every day, same thing. Weeds on the top two spots and three empty on the bottom. I learned that I need to make two non-rock friendly spots on another part of the island to get the 2 weeds to move but why don’t I at least get rocks on the bottom here? They’re all three 3x3 open area with a spot in the middle for the rock and every single tile of my island is covered with something or a pattern. So why would only the first rock spawn here and no more? I e spent quite some time looking around to find if rocks ended elsewhere but I can’t. Ideas for North facing front garden.
And advice/ideas for a North facing very shaded front garden/space? love plants, and the back is getting the full works, for the front, something nice, and easy maintenance. I was thinking raised rendered planters to deter the amazon vans driving across it (rocks now removed, but I can see why the previous owners put them there). regenerative wetland gardening in the Los Angeles River
I wanted to share my guerilla wetland garden in the L.A. River. In 1938 the river was paved into a concrete channel for the sake of flood control. The idea for this type of garden came to me when I saw a shopping cart in the water that was trapping sediment and had plants growing out of it and a heron hunting on it. The basic action here is just moving rocks into the water to create a variety of flow conditions. I also do a little bit of moving slime and plants from the surrounding area into the rocks. I'm not being overly picky about native versus invasive biomass because once it rains the entire thing gets washed out to the ocean. Thanks for checking out my work! She never hit me again
This happened when I was 8 or 9. For context, I’m in my 40s now. When/where I was growing up, physical discipline was not just the norm, but a moral imperative if you were to be considered a good parent. My parents both worked long hours, and I was often left home with my grandma. Parenting responsibilities often fell to her, or so she seemed to think. One of her favorite methods of discipline was to have me go pick out a wooden spoon from the kitchen drawer, hand it to her, hold out a palm, and wait for her to smack it. She never went easy. One day, she accused me of breaking a little glass “garden.” It was just this small glass enclosure with some nicely arranged rocks, water, and moss inside. It was a gift from my mom to my dad (he liked these kinds of things), and to this day I have no idea how it broke. I told her I didn’t do it, she accused me of lying, I got lippy, and sure enough… “Go get a spoon!” I’d learned by now that the small spoons stung more. The big ones spread out their impact more evenly and also went slower. Besides, if I chose too small a spoon, grandma would hit much harder, as if to tell me I wasn’t going to get away with it. But today, I was angry. I went to the kitchen and picked out the thinnest spoon I could find. I held it at each end, pushed my knee into the middle, and cracked it. Then, I fit the wooden splinters together as best I could before going back into the next room and handing her the sabotaged spoon. She didn’t notice. It didn’t help that her glasses were as thick as her thumbs. She did notice it was a thin spoon, however. She also noticed the dirty look I gave her; the first time I’d ever dared be so brazen. She saw red. She took a mighty swing, and the spoon broke in half. I put on an Oscar-worthy performance, wailing at the top of my lungs. I ran to my room and stayed there; she didn’t chase me. Later, when my parents got home, I overheard her, distraught, telling them, “… I had no idea I’d hit him that hard… I don’t know what came over me… I’m sorry… Christ have mercy…” That was the last time I ever got the wooden spoon, and also the last time she ever hit me, full stop. Although I overheard her apologize to my parents, she never apologized to me, so I let her feel guilty about that for the rest of her life, never telling her what I’d done. It would be another 30 years before I’d finally tell my own parents this, my earliest and longest-held secret. Love ya, Grandma. submitted by /u/rEvVoMaNiAc to r/pettyrevenge [link] [comments]

Jazz Rock / Fusion band name ideas?
Ok, so for some context, i'm leading a (slightly psychedelic) jazz rock band and i've been thinking of changing its name. I thought it'd be cool if y’all gave me some ideas/suggestions. Obviously, i'm a huge Soft Machine fan and i've been trying to come up with a name that has that cool aesthetic. Here are some names i've come up with: - Karma - Enigma - Cubensis - Equinox [heavily inclined to use this one, so dibs on this name] - Hybrid Garden - The Valleyfield Psychedelic Collective / Extravaganza Anyone got a better suggestion? Let me know! :) submitted by /u/Icecoldduck to r/Jazz [link] [comments]

Need ideas for words for rocks that might be a little subversive
I'm painting a bunch of rocks for my garden and want to do ones with words on them but I'm not really a "live laugh love" kinda gal, so beside some uplifting ones (create, believe..you get the idea) I'm looking for clever snarky words to also put on the rocks. AITA for landscaping with a large rock
For some reason everyone who takes the corner at my house to go down the alley likes to drive over my lawn. My wife, myself and both my kids all drive. We make the corner in everything from an old sedan to a welding truck with dual rear tires. I've tried everything from a traffic cone to planting flowers there. Everything gets run over. I do not want to damage anyone's car. So I didn't put little rocks there that could rip out the undercarriage of a vehicle. I had my BIL bring over a massive boulder. It is about three feet tall. I also planted flowers around it. Just Gerber Daisies. I was not trying to camouflage the rock, I was trying to make it more visible. The rock sits back almost two feet from the edge of my property. One of my neighbors managed to hit the rock anyways. Destroyed the left side of his car. He is mad at me and he said he is calling the cops on me for setting it up to damage cars. I laughed nat him because I checked with bylaw enforcement before I put the landscaping in. I could have built a brick wall at that corner and not be responsible if anything happens. But I didn't want to create a blind corner. Now there is a big fight going on in my neighborhood Facebook page between the people who used to cut that corner and everyone who says that it's my property. My wife says I should take the rock away. Great except she was mad at me and them when her garden got run over. My neighbor says I'm an asshole for damaging his car. I don't think I did anything wrong. AITA? Edit. Thanks for the ideas on making it more visible. I don't think I'm going to pant it but I am going to put some reflectors and solar powered garden lights around it. submitted by /u/Obvious_Clothes4037 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
