We usually have a lot of company in the gym on WS but not on these two legs so far. Here’s some pictures. It has great equipment but suffers from low ceilings like every other ship gym we’ve used. I know what you mean. I find that my motivation to get a better workout is good at the gym, and crummy at home. That's about my personal level of discipline, but I guess I prefer the gym. However, yes, I wonder how much risk there is. I do use the disinfectants on the gym equipment before I use them.

I just live in apartment and don't really have space but I thought like maybe I should get like indoor bicycle or mini treadmill but umm I don't really know, I just want to keep myself active and just get some sorta physical activity. I used to do this with the switch 1 but fell off, but since the switch 2 released I've been forcing myself to go to the gym nearly daily (with proper rests) to play switch at the gym. Mostly on the elliptical, sometimes on the stair master or the treadmill if I want to ramp it up or down. Along with dieting much better and staving off drinking for the last month, I've lost 7 pounds since the switch 2 released. I’ve lived in the midlands, northwest, wales, London, it all seems the same. Traditionally the excuse I’ve heard is women don’t want to use weights but like today both squat racks were being used by women (4 total as they were sharing!) as was one of the three benches, multiple other women in the resistance machines but not a single one in the cardio room... Plus here women have their own room downstairs that men aren’t allowed in which even has resistance machines that men don’t have access to. There’s no leg curl up here but there is in the women’s only room 😂 I have never seen this room in the picture even half full and even then there’s an entire room of cycles downstairs that gets used for two hours a day max because of spin classes (which are free with membership so not sure how lucrative they are?) I’ve tried some more bodybuilding-focused gyms but they tend to be smaller and packed consistently throughout the day whereas with chain gyms you can usually find a quiet time that consistently doesn’t get many members in (9pm to 10pm for me). I just feel like gyms could even just run hourly surveys of what machines are even being used to see what’s what but I don’t think they’d be interested anyway. So my apartment building has a small exercise area including a cable crossover machine, an adjustable bench, dumbbells, some treadmills, and a small side room for yoga or other bodyweight/kettlebell exercises. The gym was empty this morning except for one woman doing row exercises on the cable crossover machine. I noticed that she had placed her phone next to the bench with a couple of dumbbells. For context, I’m a tall-ish guy and she’s shortish and appears nonbinary (which is fine by me, I’ll refer to her as “she” here because I don’t know her pronouns or how she personally identifies). I specify this because it seems like that plays into the dynamic from her perspective. “Can I use this bench?” I ask. “No,” she replies. “I’m doing supersets.” I was a bit taken aback. There is room for two, maybe three people in the resistance/weight training area, and she was using every piece of equipment. Not sure what to do, I lean on a nearby wall and start looking at my phone. I’m a bit miffed and I look up every so often to see when she’ll be done. She takes her earphone out and says something to the effect of, “Are you just going to stand there?” and we get in a big argument. I say something to the effect of “What else am I supposed to do? You won’t let me work in.” “I don’t want you up in my space. Go do something else,” she says. “So I can’t do pullups on the cable crossover while you’re using the bench?” I reply. “No. I don’t want you up in my space,” she says. “That’s just bad etiquette,” I reply. It then continues like this for a bit. I accuse her of being rude, she accuses me (verbatim) of using my “male privilege.” Eventually she finishes her sets and leaves. In every gym I’ve worked out at it would be considered rude to bogart multiple pieces of equipment while others have to wait. I lived abroad for years before this - is this still the case in US gym culture? About a year ago I started my home gym project but with the goal of spending nothing on it. Through the process of buying people’s old gym equipment lots and selling off what I don’t need/want I was able to accomplish my goal. I kept a spread sheet of every item I bought what I paid for it and what I sold it for or if I kept it. I netted positive 4,125. I could have stopped when I crossed over the net 0 but I wanted to cover my basis for paint, construction materials and gas to drive around and get the equipment. I did have to watch marketplace like a hawk but it ended up being more than worth it! I also went the next step and built false shelving to complete the look. I call it my weapon room! It's a very small gym and this resident is always, always in there instructing a client when I go in — morning, night, afternoon. I actively try to go in at random times so maybe, just maybe once he won't be there and I can work out freely using the bench. But he's always there. Today he and his client were by the weight bench so I wait for them to leave. Once they leave, I go to use the only bench. Not even five minutes later he comes back with another client and starts asking to use the weights I am still using for my sets (I have 2 set aside in use and am taking 30-60 seconds rest in between sets). I say fine, use the weights for a sec, but he holds onto them and I sit there waiting to get them back so I can complete my sets. I finally give up and leave the gym. I let the office know about it because it doesn't seem right that our community amenities should be used to run someone's personal business. It's not like anyone's using the pool to teach swim lessons, or using the grass areas to run their personal yoga studio. The office won't do anything though since there isn't an explicit clause against this in the policy. I decided I don’t like driving all the way to gym 4 times a week or sharing equipment with other people, so I decided to spend $4500 on building myself a home gym. My girlfriend (2.5 years) doesn’t live with me. She has a key for EMERGENCIES. One morning she let herself to use my gym without even checking if I was okay with it? Needless to say I wasn’t okay with this. The whole point was that I didn’t want to share a gym with anyone else. She’s acting like I’m TA for not wanting to share my gym with her. But she has a gym membership and it’s no further away from her place than my house is. There’s no real reason she has to use mine.
