Ex mad because he dumped me
For context: me 28f and my ex 30m dated for about 6 months. During the past month, it got to the point of me initiating any conversation, text, calls, etc. So last 5 decided not to text or call him at all. Come Monday I called him and asked why he didn't bother texting or communicating with me. He said he was busy taking care of his mom's dog. (She's healthy btw) so I said ok and hung up. Last night after no contact I called him again and he brought up a time where I inconvenienced him (I called to talk to him after a bad day at work) because he was about to go to bed and said I was controlling him. He then said, "This isn't going to work," and I said, "That's fine." He then said that my reaction proves that I don't care about anything. I asked him if he wanted me to beg and cry so he wouldn't break up with me. And he said no. So I hung up. This morning I got a voice mail saying that I should have cared about his feelings while he was breaking up with me. I'm 28 I don't have the patience for this type of stuff. I work overnight at wawa, so my dinner was a dirt cup smoothie with espresso Edit: according to the recipe it's a cream smoothie I just added espresso to it. I don't know how you all eat at home
I'm not sure what's wrong with me, maybe I am the laziest pile in the world, or I just have limited patience but this is an adult thing I just can't bring myself to ever do. I can't cook. I can't meal prep. I'm a single guy, I'm busy, I'm always on the go, my schedule changes, I don't always know when I will get a chance to eat, I don't know what time of day I'll be really hungry, I don't know what I'll be in the mood for that day when I do get hungry. I can't think about what I'm going to eat for dinner until I'm hungry for dinner. There's so much to plan. There are too many ingredients for meals. Buying each individual ingredient is too expensive. I hate going to the grocery store. It takes too long and too many people get in my way. Every time I buy groceries everything in the fridge spoils before I can eat it. When I'm hungry the very last thing I feel like doing is spending an hour plus chopping things, measuring things, pre heating, boiling water, defrosting things, getting every dish, pot, spatula, tongs, silverware dirty and have to wash everything after and put it back. Also, you could accidentally burn or cut yourself. Everything about cooking food is a pain in the ass. Plus if you aren't good at making recipes you could mess up your meal and it ends up tasting bad and look at all you did and used and you didn't even enjoy what you put all that effort into making. Also, a big thing that stops me from cooking is handling raw meat. It is so disgusting. When I look at a slimy cold hunk of the inside of animal I get the opposite of hungry. I just want to see meat after it has been cooked and it no longer resembles something that was once living. Eating at restaurants for every meal just makes sense. You just show up and they prepare it quickly and you eat. You can choose healthy options or yummy options. All sorts of cuisines are available. You don't have to do any dishes at all. I mostly eat at fast casual places that aren't too greasy. Places where you order at the counter and you go pick it up when they call your name. Since they don't serve you at your table, you're really not obligated to tip. (Remember the days before COVID when people asked for a tip AFTER they offered service beyond providing what you bought from them?) People say it's so expensive to eat out but when you consider the time and groceries and planning involved with cooking it totally seems worth it. People also say it's unhealthy to eat out. But it isn't if you choose healthy options. I feel like such a child when it comes to this. But I just can't bring myself to cook meals at home. This is how I eat 130g of Protein everyday as a Vegetarian!
Entire day's diet breakdown: Breakfast: 500ml of skimmed milk, one fruit along with nuts/seeds for healthy fats. (Fruit can be banana/apple/pomegranate/guava/pineapple or any seasonal fruit) Lunch/Pre-workout: 2-3 chapati with 200g low fat paneer (paneer bhurji/palak paneer) and 100g greek yogurt. Post-workout: Again one fruit along with a scoop of whey protein. Dinner: Soya rice (white rice, tomato, onion, soya chunks mixed with basic spices and cooked in a pressure cooker) Total Calories: 1600-1700 Protein sources: Milk - 500ml Paneer - 200g Greek yogurt - 100g Whey - 1 scoop Soya chunks - 50g (You also get some from nuts/seeds, but not counting that) My current bodyweight: 61.5kg I was 76.5kg earlier, dropped roughly 15kg of fat while maintaining muscle mass with this diet in 4-5 months. I have made this diet as per my requirements, feel free to customise it according to your needs. Cheers! Easy Baked Salmon & Vegetable Packets (Juicy, Healthy Dinner)
I recently made these baked salmon and vegetable packets, and they turned out really flavorful and surprisingly easy to prepare. Everything cooks together in parchment paper - salmon, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peppers, onion, garlic, olive oil, herbs, and lemon. The parchment packet keeps the salmon very juicy while the vegetables become tender and soak up all the flavors. It’s also great because cleanup is minimal since everything cooks in the packet. I used two whole salmon fillets per packet placed on top of the vegetables, which worked really well and kept the fish moist while baking. The packets go into the oven at 190°C (375°F) for about 30 minutes, and the result is a healthy, simple dinner that feels fresh and satisfying. Desperately need beginner friendly healthy recipes
I am 26 years old and never learned how to cook and it’s starting to create some tension in my relationship since my partner has to handle almost every meal. They are very health ordinated (something else I suck at) and I really want to start teaching myself how to properly make a solid healthy dinner to take some weight off them. This is how I eat 130g of Protein everyday as a Vegetarian!
Entire day's diet breakdown: Breakfast: 500ml of skimmed milk, one fruit along with nuts/seeds for healthy fats. (Fruit can be banana/apple/pomegranate/guava/pineapple or any seasonal fruit) Lunch/Pre-workout: 2-3 chapati with 200g low fat paneer (paneer bhurji/palak paneer) and 100g greek yogurt. Post-workout: Again one fruit along with a scoop of whey protein. Dinner: Soya rice (white rice, tomato, onion, soya chunks mixed with basic spices and cooked in a pressure cooker) Total Calories: 1600-1700 Protein sources: Milk - 500ml Paneer - 200g Greek yogurt - 100g Whey - 1 scoop Soya chunks - 50g (You also get some from nuts/seeds, but not counting that) My current bodyweight: 61.5kg I was 76.5kg earlier, dropped roughly 15kg of fat while maintaining muscle mass with this diet in 4-5 months. Easy Baked Salmon & Vegetable Packets (Juicy, Healthy Dinner)
I recently made these baked salmon and vegetable packets, and they turned out really flavorful and surprisingly easy to prepare. Everything cooks together in parchment paper - salmon, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peppers, onion, garlic, olive oil, herbs, and lemon. The parchment packet keeps the salmon very juicy while the vegetables become tender and soak up all the flavors. It’s also great because cleanup is minimal since everything cooks in the packet. I used two whole salmon fillets per packet placed on top of the vegetables, which worked really well and kept the fish moist while baking. Desperately need beginner friendly healthy recipes

What I'm feeding my family of 5 this week for $125

Our grocery budget is $500 a month, which breaks down to about $125 per week. We have no major food allergies and aren’t following any special diets. AITAH for telling my boyfriend that if he doesn’t like what I’m making for dinner at my apartment he can get his own food or just not eat at my place?
My boyfriend (25/M) and I (24/F) have been dating for almost a year, and this is the first real fight we have had, we have disagreed about small things but never actually gotten into a fight until now. We both work very busy jobs and one of the main ways we make time for each other during the work week is to just have dinner, watch a show and sleep over together at one of our apartments. I usually get off work an hour before he does, and he works not far from my apartment so 9 out of 10 times it is him who is coming over to my place after work. I have been relying pretty heavily on processed ready-to-eat food from the store and takeout for the past year or so, I have just felt too tired to cook after work and have not been making the healthiest choices. One of my new year resolutions is to change that, so I signed up for a meal kit and chose a plan where I get healthy options that I can make in under 30 minutes, and it’s honestly been a game changer. I am saving a ton of money and eating much healthier, and maybe it’s a placebo effect but I feel like I’ve had more energy lately too. My boyfriend came over for dinner last week and the recipe I was making was cheeseburger bowls- basically everything you’d put on a burger, just in a bowl with no bun. I also added some roasted potatoes in the bowls so it wasn’t like totally a salad. When he came in the kitchen and saw what I was making he started rolling his eyes and saying that I should “just eat a burger with the damn bun because life is short” and then started saying he didn’t want to date a girl who wouldn’t even eat a burger. I told him I am definitely still going to eat burgers but that this was the recipe I had for tonight and it didn’t come with buns and I didn’t really care if I had one or not. I pointed out it was a complete meal with all the food groups and he said that wasn’t his point. He told me he’s sick of me choosing all the fit and healthy options on the meal plan and that he wants some “real comfort food again”. I told him this was my apartment and if he didn’t want to eat what I was making he could get himself fast food or something on the way here or just not come over and he got super offended. He said he wants to keep having dinner with me but have his opinions respected and just have me make “something he wants to eat” at least some of the time. I haven’t been making stuff I know he doesn’t like, just different stuff from my usual KFC, pizza, and grocery store sushi rotation I had going before this. I told him that I don’t want to go back to eating junk all the time, and now he hasn’t come over in a few days and is acting really weird towards me. I’m thinking about breaking up with him over this but then part of me is wondering if I should at least try to be more accommodating? AITA for refusing to feed my sister's kids for free every day?
My older sister (37F) has 3 kids under 10. I (25M) don't have kids yet but I'm a junior sous-chef and I cook a lot in my spare time. During some recent time off from work my sister asked if I could babysit her kids after school for three days. I said yes. I watched the kids. She paid me for it and I thought that would be it. But then she asked me what the kids ate with me after the week had ended and then she wanted to know how I got her kids to eat a full meal. Her kids are picky eaters. They are typically the kids who will eat what they like off a plate (meat and potatoes, rice or noodles) and then leave the rest (veggies, sauces). According to my sister and BIL, even if you give more veggies than something else they won't eat them and they'll wait until their next meal and if you give all veggies or insist they eat the veggies before anything else, they'll skip the meal. I sorta knew that about them before I babysat so I blended veggies and other good stuff into their dinner the first day with me and the second day I served them but I did them but hid them in plain sight and on the last day I just served them in a way they don't get them normally and because they knew they had them they ate them without an issue. But they wouldn't eat them for my sister or BIL after. There was some back and forth between us and I shared some recipes but my sister said she couldn't get them to eat the food. So she wanted me to make food for her kids every day. I asked if she was going to pay me for spending all that time and money and she told me I should do it as a way to help my nieces and nephews stay healthy. I told her it's a big ask. She told me I have the chance to really help and put my skills to good use for family. I feel like it's asking a lot because they expect me to make something every day for the kids. Mood Spoiler: things are looking up Original Post: September 15, 2024 So, here’s what happened: I (28F) invited my sister (25F) and her boyfriend (26M) over for dinner. I love cooking and had spent hours preparing this fancy meal: homemade pasta, a slow-cooked ragu, a salad, and a tiramisu for dessert. I was really proud of it and excited to have them over. When they arrived, everything was fine at first. We sat down, and I started serving the food. Her boyfriend (let’s call him Steve) stared at the pasta for a moment, then looked at me and said, "I don’t eat carbs." At first, I thought he was joking, but nope—he was dead serious. He goes on about how he’s "super into keto" and "carbs are the enemy." Okay, fine, that’s his choice. But when I offered to make him a salad or something else on the spot, he refused and said that I should have known about his diet beforehand. This is where it gets weird. I (23f) have been dating my boyfriend “Jake” (24m) for four years. I’d say we’re a happy couple overall, but lately this argument has come up that’s divided us. He’s always had….unique….tastes. Cereal with orange juice instead of milk, mayo and butter sandwiches, and raw onions have been the worst culprits. I’ve put up with these. We all have our quirks, right? Well two weeks ago he started eating garlic as his midnight snack. Raw. Cloves. Of. Garlic. I can’t share a drink with him without it reeking of garlic somehow. And kissing him? It’s like shoving a clove straight in your mouth. He swears he’s only eating them “because he didn’t want them to go to waste” and that he would stop once he finished the head of garlic, but just when I finally thought it was over I caught him sneaking a second one into the kitchen last night when he thought I was asleep. I confronted him about his secret grocery trip this morning and he got really defensive and denied it. I’m trying not to be a nag here, but it’s really wearing on me. The garlicky aura surrounding him makes me want to avoid him at all costs. But like, I don’t want to do that because he’s my boyfriend. AITA for giving him an ultimatum of no more eating garlic? EDIT FOR CONTEXT: His diet seems healthy overall and he goes to the gym a lot. He had a dr’s appointment not long ago and I don’t think anything came up? But I can ask him to go again. Sorry if the title is confusing, I just feel bad because I did give him an ultimatum this morning which I know isn’t good. I really love him and don’t want to break up but I just don’t know what to do. He hasn’t come back since this morning. His usual diet: Besides the occasional “unique” food choice I think his diet’s pretty healthy. He eats his vegetables and gets protein and all that, and he goes to the gym. I spent the night tossing and turning. I kept going over what I was going to say to him when he got home. Not that it mattered, because he didn’t come back last night. That worried me, so this morning I checked his location. He stopped sharing it with me through his phone, but I guess he forgot I can still see it on snapchat. It showed him about 30 minutes away at some house off a random backroad. I was pretty confused and honestly panicked - all his friends that I know of live in the city. I tried to call him again and was sent to voicemail, so I drove over there to see what was up. When I got to the house, I noticed a woman about my age gardening in the frontyard. I was pretty upset already, so I flat out asked her if she had seen my partner. She seemed surprised and asked if I meant Jake. She invited me inside and there he was. Apparently, she’s into gardening and they met at her stand last fall when he went to stock up on onions at our local farmers market. They hit it off and have been seeing each other for the past 6 months, and made it official back when his “busy season” started. She said lately she’s been giving Jake the garlic she grew last summer since it’s going to go bad soon. That’s why he was so insistent on eating it by himself instead of cooking it into a shared dish like normal, and why he’s been eating onions like an apple instead of letting me use them on my sandwiches. He didn’t want to give me her presents because, in his own words, “she grew it with love for me” and “if you ate them you would have known.” (???) At that point I saw red so I just left. Since then Jake’s been blowing up my phone about how we can fix this and that he won’t do it again but I’m so over it at this point. Just when I thought my life couldn’t get any worse, while I was moving his stuff to the curb I found his stash of garlic. Shoved in the back of his closet was 1 POUND of garlic in a home depot bucket along with letters she had written him. I’m keeping the garlic. l don’t think we can ever come back from his cheating, but I’m going to at least get some good meals out of this terrible situation. An ode to the humble Kohlrabi: Cheap, nutritious, healthy, and incredibly versatile. Perfect for a quick and easy weekday dinner for one.
I'm a pretty big Kohlrabi fan, but sadly it's being treated as some sort of novelty vegetable instead and people tend to ignore all of its qualities. Kohlrabi is cheap, nutritious, healthy, bulky, and most importantly incredibly versatile. Its flavor is somewhere between a radish and brokkoli stems, it's delicious raw and cooked. You can get a head on sale for like 70 cents and it can play a substantial role in your meal. Yes, you can cut it into sticks and use those raw to scoop up hummus or your favorite dip, and that's great. What's even better is that you can pan-fry those sticks in a fat of your choice (butter, olive oil, bacon fat, go wild) and have them develop quite a depth of flavor and almost sweetness. Add your favorite spices, which Kohlrabi readily accepts, and you can take the dish into any direction you want. I haven't found a spice (mix) that doesn't go well with it yet. Smoked paprika? Curry powder? Miso? Ras El Hanout? Gochujang? Krapao and fresh chilies? Tajin? Baharat? It just works. MSG is always a good addition, by the way. This tends to be one of my quick, no-thinking-required weekday dinners. It's not fancy. It's not pretty. It's very savory and satiating though. Get a decently sized head of Kohlrabi (500g, about the size of two average fists I'd say) Cut the skin off and cut it into mouth-friendly pieces Pan-fry those until golden on all sides Cut up a red onion and a few cloves of garlic Once the Kohlrabi is done add those to the pan and let it get fragrant Add lots of spices of your choice, let it go for another 30 seconds. Thyme goes really well with Kohlrabi btw. Deglaze with a decent glug of soy sauce and acid of choice (white wine or balsamic vinegar work well obviously) Once it's dry again dump in a can of beans of your choice (kidney, chickpeas, cannelini, ...) and let it cook until the flavors have melded and the liquid has evaporated Done. Like I said, not fancy, and definitely not pretty either, but it hits the spot and is quite filling. Plus moderately healthy and nutritious. If you're extra you can drizzle over some tahini or add an avocado for healthy fats. Or chili crisp for the deliciously unhealthy fats. Want to increase the protein? Put an egg on top. Want to turn it into dinner for two? Serve it with a carb of your choice (rice, potatoes, bread, whatever). Beans too many carbs for you? Add cubed smoked tofu instead. Or bacon. Or sliced chicken breast. Do you like cheese? Sprinkle shredded cheese on top and put it into the oven until it's all gooey and glorious. The sky is the limit. That's not all, though. Those funny looking stems and leaves? Totally edible. Quite chewy, so I'd let them go for a bit in the pan, but you can easily incorporate them into the meal for some added greens. That's not all, though. Kohlrabi holds up really well to prolonged cooking. You can easily turn those Kohlrabi sticks into an Indian sabzi. Serve with rice and dal. That's not all, though. Kohlrabi does a surprisingly good job at being a papaya replacement for when you're hankering for some Som Tum. Get one of those nifty Thai shredders and just go at the peeled head of Kohlrabi. It's a bit more watery and less substantial than papaya, but it works. And doesn't cost an arm and a leg. One thing I haven't tried yet, but which is on the list, is cutting a big head into discs and trying to replicate one of those celeriac steak recipes. It should work. Guess I'll find out. AITA - Refusing to cook

Mood Spoiler: Overall looking positive Original Post: March 17, 2023 I (41F) live with my husband (41M) and daughters (10, 17). Husband is a picky eater, which I've known about for 20 years. I'm used to making food and having husband and/or kids making faces, gagging, taking an hour to pick at a single serving, or just outright refusing to eat. My husband is notorious for coming home from work, taking one look at the dinner I've made, and opting for a frozen pizza. Most of the meals I make cater to their specific wants. Like spaghetti: 10F only eats the plain noodles. 17F eats the noodles with a scrambled egg on top, no sauce. Husband only eats noodles with a specific brand of tomato sauce with ground beef in it. If I use any other sauce (even homemade) I'm going to be eating leftovers for a week. So it's just the one recipe of spaghetti. These days, husband complains that we have a lot of the same meals, over and over. It's true, but when I've explained WHY that's true, it doesn't seem to sink in. I can only make a few things that everyone in the family will reliably eat and those get old. A couple of nights ago I made a shepherd's pie. I used a new recipe with seasoned ground beef (3/3 like), peas (2/3 like), and tomatoes (1/3 like, 1/3 tolerate) with a turmeric-mashed potato top layer (2/3 will eat mashed potato). Predictably, 10F ate a single bite then gagged and ended up throwing hers away. 17F ate part of a single bowl then put hers in the trash. Husband came home late and "wasn't hungry". I was so tired of reactions to my food and putting in the effort for YEARS and it all finally came down on me at once. I burst into tears and cried all night and the next morning. So I told my husband that I was done cooking. From here on out, HE would be responsible for evening meals. I would still do breakfast for the girls, and lunch when they weren't in school but otherwise it was up to him. He said "what about when I work late?". I told him he needed to figure it out. I told him that between him and the girls, I no longer found any joy in cooking and baking, that I hated the way he and the girls made me feel when they reacted to my food, that I was tired of the "yuck faces" and refusals to eat when I made something new and that it broke my heart EVERY time. This morning, he had to work, so he got up early to do some meal prep. He was clearly angry. He said he doesn't understand why "[I] said I hated him". He said he "doesn't know what to do" and thinks I'm being unfair and punishing him. He said I make things that "don't appeal to kids" sometimes and I can't expect them to like it when I make Greek-style lemon-chicken soup (17F enjoyed it, 10F and husband hated it). I countered that I make PLENTY of chicken nuggets, mac & cheese, grilled cheese, etc but that picky or not, there's such a thing as respect for a person's efforts. So, Reddit: AITA? Relevant Comments: What does your husband do/splitting chores: "He works as a retail manager every day except Wednesday and Thursday. I WFH on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays (afternoon-evening shift) We live on a hobby farm, so farm chores fall to me (unless it's plowing the driveway, because the tractor is old and fickle). We typically share large outdoor projects like firewood stacking, coop cleaning, and yard cleanup. Daily chores are mine. I also do all the housecleaning, laundry, paperwork/bill paying, school events, pet care/vet appts, medical appointments, child care, gift shopping/shipping, and errands. Husband is usually good about picking up some groceries on his way home from work, and has recently stepped up to making some of the meals on nights when I work (if I didn't already have something in the crock pot)." Wasting food: "Most of our scraps go to the chickens, ducks, or dog. This time I was out of the room (crying) when they threw the stuff away in the trash." What exactly is your policy when they don't eat the food? "The policy has always been "try it first" and then (especially with the 10F) to ask WHY they don't like it. So if it's a texture thing, or flavor, or ketchup would help, I work with that. Like I KNOW the youngest doesn't like sauce/gravy, so I'll usually keep some of whatever it is reserved to the side so it doesn't get sauced. The family likes over-baked fish, but 10F said she doesn't like the "black stuff" (pepper) so hers is lightly salted and done. If she picks at a meal without eating a reasonable amount, she's allowed to be done IF she agrees there will be no snacking/dessert afterwards. If she (or any of them) puts in the effort and it's just not their favorite but they TRIED, that's good enough for me. It's the facial expressions and complaints that do me in. They don't have to love it, but if you're going to pick at it and then dump the plate and grab a bag of chips, I'm going to be hurt and upset, you know?" Any allergies or food issues? "Husband has a mild food allergy to onions, so those are not used in the house (unless it's something solely for someone else like salsa - he has to ingest it or handle peeled onions to get a reaction). He's been to a doc for stomach/digestive stuff and aside from a recommendation for more fiber, there was nothing wrong with him. 10F's regular pediatrician says she seems healthy and isn't malnourished so they're not concerned much over her pickiness as a medical problem." Have you ever expressed your dislike of their reactions before and/or tried to figure out what they like? "Many, many times. I sat down with my husband when we first got together and worked out a list of things he WOULD NOT eat, so I could develop workarounds. To his credit, he's made progress over the years in trying things before he rejects them, and has learned to like, for example, sour cream in his mashed potatoes, even though he hates sour cream by itself. Most of the things he DOES like are isolated flavors in a particular style. He eats exactly two kinds of pie: Raspberry and French Silk. But the Silk has to be on a Graham cracker crust with no whipped cream or chocolate curls, and the raspberry has to be a classic double-crust (no tart-style, crumble-top, or other cobbler-adjacent types). Using apples is a mortal sin." Update Post: April 15, 2023 (1 month later) I spoke with each family member individually about their behavior. 10F apologized profusely and said that "sometimes [she] doesn't like my cooking". 17F (who has only been with us since she was 16 and didn't grow up with us. It was a bit too long and off-topic for the original post) said she appreciated that I make varied recipes, even if she didn't always like them. She also said that she WANTED to cook, but had seen Husband and 10F's reactions to mine and was put off it. Husband accepted the TA judgement from the sub and to his credit, he planned and executed every evening meal. The kids ate his meals, but husband's lack of finesse (overboiled vegetables, untrimmed meat, soggy pasta, etc) caused some picked-over meals from the kids. Everything was edible, though, and he very politely asked for some tips on things (like how long to cook rice) but I did not physically help. I reassured him that I wasn't trying to watch him fail but that I needed him to learn a lesson. After a couple of weeks, both kids were tired of husband's oft-repeated recipes (homemade pizza, Korean beef/veg bowls, and nuggets/fries) and he was stressed trying to get home from work in time to get meals done. The very first night, 10F cried over her "dry, gross" pizza crust. Husband fought her over it and BOTH OF THEM looked to me to solve the issue. I redirected 10F to Husband, saying it's his call since it's his dinner. With several meals, he made WAY too much mediocre food and had to eat leftovers for DAYS, which was cathartic. Eventually, I sat down with Husband and we evaluated the fallout. Husband said it hurt when the girls didn't like his food, and it was hard to plan things ahead on night he worked late. He also admitted he was in a rut for recipes and that it was hard to modify for people's preferences. There is now a posted schedule and rule set that ALL family members are expected to adhere to. Each kid picked a night to cook (10F has Sunday, 17F has Saturday). Husband and I split the weekdays according to work schedule. Since he works late on Monday and Friday, I took those. I work Tuesday and Thursday nights, so those belong to him. Wednesday is a flex day. Anyone can cook, or we might go out, and group projects are encouraged. The rules are: NO gagging, "faces", or complaining Cook chooses the meal, period Assistance may be requested by anyone Special ingredient requests must be made a minimum of two days in advance So far so good. 17F has been learning a lot of technique, 10F is thrilled to be addressed as "Chef" by whoever is assisting her, and no one has yet broken any of the Rules. Husband more easily asks for my advice when he's cooking (how to season, how long to cook things) which is a huge improvement. It's too early to declare victory, and it takes a long time to make permanent changes, but it's encouraging progress. Thanks everyone for the advice and the support! WIBTA if I opt out of Thanksgiving with my parents because my brother and new wife (who left me out of their wedding) will be there?
TL;DR My brother left me out of his wedding, I was really hurt and I set a boundary for the relationship. Thanksgiving is coming and it's too soon after the conflict for me to be comfortable around him. WIBTA for opting out this year, or offering to celebrate with just my parents on another day? My brother and I are 8 years apart, I’m older. Since he was about 12 I have lived in another state. We aren’t close, but we hang out a few times a year and it’s easy and fun. I recently moved to the same city as he and my parents. I envisioned us getting closer but it never really happened. He’s the king of “I’ll call you tomorrow” with zero follow-up. It hurts my feelings, but I’ve accepted it and take what I can get. He got married this past September. I was told that there was no wedding party because his wife’s family is too big for her to make a choice and she didn’t want to leave people out. I was given instructions to get a gray suit and that I’d be given a blue tie for pictures. The day of the wedding I was hanging out in the mens’ dressing room and I saw that my brother has a gold tie. And that his best friend has a gold tie. And that his old bandmate has a gold tie. Odd, but I didn’t think too much of it. The ceremony started and I was sitting in the audience. Lo and behold, the music starts and there’s a procession. My brother’s two gold-tie friends walk in and line up on stage left, and his wife’s sister and her husband walk in and line up on stage right. The nonexistent wedding party. At this point I have an almost out-of-body experience. The ceremony was a blur. After the ceremony we “took pictures” which means I took one picture with my brother and that was it. I spent the cocktail hour in a stall in the bathroom, embarrassed and hurt. I made it through dinner ok, and instead of cake my brother had made a ton of his specialty cookies for dessert. I’m allergic to the recipe as-is, but with a simple tweak I can have them. He didn’t make any for me, or even warn me this was happening so I could bring my own dessert. Anyways, I left the second dancing started. And a week later sent the newlyweds a letter saying basically “I thought things would improve once I moved here, but this wedding has shown me that we don’t have a relationship outside holidays at mom and dad’s house, so let’s just keep it real and I will see you there, being disappointed all the time isn’t healthy for either of us”. The problem is that Thanksgiving is upon us, and not only will they be at my parents’ house but they are bringing a couple of friends with them, so I will be really outnumbered and uncomfortable. Need some (actually delicious) healthy recipes
Been reading The Food Lab the past couple of months. And while it’s really great and the recipes are amazing, it’s really hard to lose the extra 15kg i have while still making those meals lol. Maybe it’s not the “right” subreddit to post this, but all the healthy subreddits i visit have some really basic food and it doesn’t do it for me. AITA for refusing to cook dinner for my family because my mom continuously buys the wrong ingredients?
Ok, so to start I'm a 24F that lives at home with my parents. I have a job and pay rent, I just cant feasibly afford an apartment where I currently live by myself with my current job. Into the issue at hand, my mother for YEARS will buy the wrong or "healthier" version of something that we need for cooking or eating. IE, sugar free nesquick, margarine instead of butter, fat free versions of anything that don't need to be fat free. I have one hell of a alfredo sauce recipe, its delicious and I love it. Is it healthy? No, not in the slightest, but not everything needs to be healthy, especially when none of us in this household are unhealthy/overweight. Mom wanted me to make it for dinner and asked what I would need to make it, so I told her. I would need 2 cups of HEAVY cream, a bag of shredded parmesan cheese, a stick of butter, flour, spices, and pasta water. All she needed to buy was heavy cream, and a bag of shredded parmesan cheese, and some butter, everything else we already had. I told her this recipe doesn't work/taste right without these specific things, and not to substitute anything or I wouldn't be making dinner. What does she come home with? A gallon of 2% milk, and a container of reduced fat grated parmesan cheese, the kind you would sprinkle on spaghetti, and a tub of smart balance butter spread. None of these things were what I needed to make dinner with. I asked if the store was just out of everything, and she told me no, but these will work better..... ???? I have tried to make this with half and half and grated parmesan cheese before, Its not a fraction as scrum-diddily-ishus compared to when its made with heavy cream and shredded cheese. I told her that I needed everything that I said with no substitutions and that I wouldn't be making it, and she flipped. She said she didn't have anything else to make for dinner and that she doesn't know how to make it like I do.... Yet, she couldn't follow simple instructions. Before any of you say "why didn't you go to the store?" I didn't go because she said she would get everything and promised to not substitute anything and just get what I asked for. I didn't care the brand of anything she got, it could be the store brand stuff for all I care, I just needed heavy cream, BUTTER, and a BAG of shredded parmesan cheese. She's now calling me ungrateful and uncooperative along with a multitude of other things that imply that I'm stupid and have something wrong with me, and threatening to kick me out if I don't make dinner. Learning to cook during quarantine, so me and my cousins wanted to start recording my Peruvian grandma making her meals! She just taught us this Peruvian bean dish Arroz y Frijol a la criolla. I made it for dinner tonight, so easy, pretty healthy, and super cheap.
Here's a video of my grandma making it For 2 people all you need is: For Beans A can of beans About 1 spoon of Fresh Garlic (or one clove) Half a Red Onion (minced) For Salsa Criolla: Half a Red Onion (chopped) A tomato A bunch of cilantro One pepper of choice (serrano, habanero) ------- Add the diced onions and garlic and cook on a pan Rinse out the beans, add it to a blender with a bit of water so it blends easier Add beans to the pan for a few min (doesn't need to cook too long) For the Salsa Criolla, in a separate bowl put together the chopped onions, chopped tomato, chopped cilantro, and minced pepper of choice Serve on a plate with rice or whatever side you'd like! Dinners with great leftovers? Grandma recipes?
I have some trouble finding new recipes of dinners that leave good leftovers and are healthy. I'm also looking for something a bit more complex than beans and rice or chili. Think of all recipes your grandma would cook for the whole family. I think all soups fit into this category, but I can't find many non-soup recipes that I don't already know. I did two searches on this sub and couldn't find anything that stands out. So, share your best Grandma's recipes and I'll share mine. Plov Well seasoned rice dish with your choice of meat. My recipe is very different from traditional Uzbek dish, but uses less spices and I tried it with chicken, beef, and lamb Ingredients 1lb meat, cut into bite sized chunks If chicken, 2 tsp oil 1 onion, chopped 3 carrots, shredded 1 tbs salt 1 tsp ground black pepper 1 cup rice 1 garlic blub directions Cut meat into bite sized chunks. In a pot, start sauteing the meat. If it's chicken, as some oil first. While cooking meat, chop an onion. Once meat is cooked on all sides if it's beef, drain fat. Add onion, salt and pepper. Shred carrots, stirring meat and onion occasionally. Add carrots. Cook for about 5 minutes or until carrot slices look soft. At this point there will be some juice in the pot. Add little bit less than 2 cups water - enough to make 2 cups with the juice. Add rice. Bring to simmer and leave it until rice is cooked. Peal garlic bulb. Once the rice is cooked, thumb garlic cloves into rice, spread evenly, take off the heat. There should be no liquids left in the pot. If rice is cooked but there are still liquids - you added too much water. Don't add as much next time. But dish is still yummy with some water. Just soggy.
