This is a very specific post but to my queer Muslim girls from strict conservative families: there is hope.
Long ass rant from an ADHD yapper™ girlie so feel free to skip but: Some days, I’ll be sitting alone at a bar on a random Tuesday, leave a huge tip, and just laugh to myself thinking about how impossible my life would have sounded to 18-year-old me. I grew up in a conservative Muslim family, and my brothers and I lived by completely different rules. They could go out wherever they wanted, stay out all night, date, have sex, party, disappear for hours or even days, and nobody cared. Meanwhile, I had a 4:30 PM curfew from the age of 11 until I got kicked out at 18. It didn’t matter if it was a school activity, a birthday party, a rehearsal, or literally anything else. If it ended after 4:30, I wasn’t going. I was expected to clean the house, including my brothers’ rooms, do laundry, help make meals, serve the men first, clear the table, do the dishes, and clean the kitchen afterwards. My brothers and father would finish eating, get up, and walk away. The women took care of everything else. Whenever I pointed out how unfair it was, I got the same answer every time: you’re a woman. Stop comparing yourself to men. Men and women have different roles. If I pushed too hard, things could get ugly, and by the time I left home, I’d been hospitalized multiple times. I’ve had multiple concussions, broken bones, stitches, broke my nose three times, and other injuries which I am still suffering from to this day. This is because the only time my family would take me to the hospital was if I lost consciousness. Other than that, the scars they’d leave on me would just get infected, which still affects me today. When I did need to be driven to the hospital, my mother would drive me there and then would threaten me that unless I told the doctors that I’d fallen in the shower, they would do so much worse to me once I got back home. So that’s what I always said. Every time, it was : - I fell in the shower. - I fell down the stairs. - I tripped. Looking back, the strangest part is how normal all of it felt. Nobody around me seemed shocked by any of it. It was just understood that girls had rules and boys had freedom. My parents didn’t care much about my education either. Their plan for me was simple: finish high school, get married, have kids. Meanwhile, I loved school and always wanted more than the life that had been planned for me. From ages 11 to 18, I was terrified of ending up married to a man. I used to lie awake at night and cry myself to sleep because I genuinely believed it was going to happen eventually and there was nothing I could do about it. I thought my life had already been decided for me. If you’re a queer Muslim girl reading this and feeling that same fear, please believe me when I say it doesn’t have to happen. I spent years convinced I’d never get to live openly, never get to fall in love, and never get to build a life that actually felt like mine. But I was sooo wrong. Since then, I’ve had girlfriends. I’ve fallen in love. I’ve had my heart broken. I’ve gone on trips with women, spoiled them, spent lazy Sundays together, shared living spaces, made memories, and experienced all the ordinary things that once felt completely impossible. The future I was terrified of never happened. And tbh, it wasn’t just my family… I know we say “not all Muslim families,” and I agree, maybe not all. But I grew up in Muslim communities in the US, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Indonesia, France, and Canada. The vast majority of women I knew lived under rules their brothers never had to follow. Every queer Muslim woman I know has a story. A lot of women stay in these conservative communities because leaving is terrifying. You don’t just risk losing your family. You risk losing your community, your support system, your financial security, and sometimes every person you’ve ever known. And I 100% understand why so many stay. When my parents found out I was a lesbian, I got kicked out at 18, which was a curse but also kind of a blessing otherwise I would still be living a complete lie. I only had a debit account with around $30 to my name. For the next few years I survived however I could. I slept in parks, under bridges, on couches, wherever I could find somewhere safe enough to spend the night. I also did some SW to survive which I still stress about people finding out to this day. I’m still not entirely sure how I made it through those years. At 21, I got into law school. I paid for it with scholarships, loans, even worked full time, and eventually I landed a job in Big Law. Today I’m financially independent. After paying my bills, I still have money left over every month to save, invest, travel, or help people. And truly, helping people has become my favorite part. I don’t want children, don’t care about home ownership that much (my rent is less than 15% of my monthly income since ive been living in the same shithole studio apt since moving out of uni lmao), and have way more than enough (monthly investments + salary + bonuses included) to live comfortably. So I’m not saying this to brag (and reddit is anonymous so who tf cares anyway) but any money I don’t invest (so around 2-3k a month) gets donated, whether that be through tips, charity donations, helping friends and family, etc. For example, a friend once owed about $10,000 in tax debt and interest kept piling up. I had the money, so I lent it to them and told them to pay me back whenever they could, interest free. I’ve paid for strangers’ meals. I’ve covered Ubers. I’ve left tips that made people cry. One night I was sitting in a sports bar and noticed the staff would always give food or water to homeless people who came in asking for help. Then later, I overheard one of the employees worrying about how she was going to get around while her car was being repaired. And it truly fucking hit something in my soul because these weren’t wealthy people helping others. They were people who were struggling themselves. Before I left, I tipped the bar $1,000. The staff thought I’d made a mistake and kept trying to reverse the transaction. I hadn’t made a mistake. I just wanted them to know someone had noticed. Also, the older I get, the more I realize that the best thing money ever gave me wasn’t luxury, but rather something that as a lesbian woman growing up in a muslim household I never thought I’d get to have: complete freedom. Financial freedom and never having to depend on anyone. Freedom to feel safe from the men in my family who feel hartred towards me solely due to the fact that I am an independant woman who gets to live life freely while also earning more than them. Freedom to travel where I want. Freedom to love women openly. Freedom to make my own decisions. Freedom to help people whenever I want. Freedom to never again need permission from my father, my brothers, a husband, or a mahram to live my life. Growing up, I was told my purpose was to become someone’s wife. Today, I am a lawyer making more than six figures annually and I am in the top 3-5% of earners in the US. For this, I am so grateful for education : it gave me a way out, which is why, based on my personal experience, that I will never buy into people saying education is useless. So if you’re a queer Muslim girl reading this from your bedroom (or coming from any ultra conservative religions/cults) and feeling trapped and convinced your life has already been decided for you, please don’t give up. I was in your exact same shoes not too long ago. Focus on your education, if you can (obviously this isn’t the case for everyone) I know how impossible it feels when you’re in the middle of it. But I promise that there is a life on the other side. Lastly, if you are currently in this situation or have been in the past, feel free to hit my DMs. Will be more than glad to discuss our experiences and help however I can. Food: seafood lingune and lasagna which I enjoyed with my lovely GF💕from one of the best restaurants in Rome which I got to travel to thanks to my amazing job!! —————— Edit: Also, I would like to point out that more than 12 years ago, at 18, freshly kicked out, I made a reddit post (i dont remember on which subreddit it was) about my situation asking for help/advice. A kind redditor who had gone through the same thing reached out to me and actually paid for me to stay at a hotel for 2 nights until I figured my shit out. I was broke so I didn’t end up figuring anything out, but I am so grateful for that person and their selfless act. I felt so safe for these two nights which meant the world to me. Wish I could reach out to thank them again, but it was from my old and now deleted account so I have no way to find them, but wherever you are, I hope you know how much your selfless actions meant to me and how much it inspired me to this day. Edit #2: Thank you so much for all the love ❤️ I wrote this last night while walking home from the bar, slightly tipsy and feeling ridiculously grateful. It just suddenly hit me how far I’ve come, and I felt like sharing. And for the people wondering, I am not religious and have been an atheist since I was like 14-15 yo. Edit #3: I’ve been getting comments saying the photo is AI-generated and I was out here vigorously defending it 😭 I asked my girlfriend to remove her hand tattoos because they’re very distinctive and I didn’t want to dox her identity. Since she’s literally a GRAPHIC DESIGNER!!! I assumed she’d just use Photoshop. She has since informed me that she was feeling lazy and just ran the photo through AI instead 💀 Anyway, I’ve posted the original non-AI version in the comments below submitted by /u/Suspicious_Ocelot445 to r/GirlDinnerDiaries [link] [comments]

Me [29 M] with my wife [27 F] of 4 years, just found she has a fake instagram and is following my exes?
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/throwawayfakeinsta Me [29 M] with my wife [27 F] of 4 years, just found she has a fake instagram and is following my exes? Original Post Nov 29, 2014 Hi reddit. My wife, Claire, and I have been married for four years. We have been together for a total of seven years. During this time, nothing like this has ever happened. She is honestly the most drama-free person I know. We have rarely ever argued during our time together, and she is very mature when conflict arises and will come talk to me about the situation calmly. She has also never been outwardly jealous or bitchy when it has come to other girls in my life, including exes. Before Claire, I had had 3 "serious" girlfriends. The most serious of the 3, was a girl I dated when I was 16 named Hannah. I was just a teenager and I thought I was in love, so it was a very dramatic relationship with all those hormones thrown into the mix. I was very cut up when she left me for another guy, but eventually I got over it. We were in contact for a while through facebook (she is now married, with children), and it was nothing more than a hi and bye sort of thing. I eventually removed her because we simply did not talk anymore. The other two were nothing special, just girls I dated and it didn't work out. I have always told Claire the truth, and was very open with her about my past, especially about Hannah because that had been my longest and most emotionally involved relationship prior to Claire. Claire has never exhibited any crazy, jealous behavior. She asked normal questions regarding Hannah, what had happened, etc, but nothing at all that would ring any alarms. She never seemed to be upset at all when we discussed the past, and she never brought it up beyond our conversations. This whole thing is so out of left field and so very unlike her that I am extremely confused and shocked. We both have instagrams and sometimes we will take a selfie on the other person's instagram (if they've gone to the bathroom and left their phone) with a weird face or something and tag it as #clairewashere or #mikewashere. Today we were just lounging around having a lazy Saturday, watching tv. She went to go take a shower and left her phone on the coffee table. So I go to take a silly selfie and tag it when I notice her instagram looks really weird. Instead her pictures, it was pictures of someone else, and the name "Cecilia" was in the description box. The username was different, and this account had about 10 followers, as opposed to the 65 people they were following. I clicked to see who they were following and I was stunned to see my three exes plus other girls who are friends/co-workers with me on the list. The more I scrolled through the followers, the more girls I knew/know popped up. Girls I'd been to school with, girls I worked/work with, my exes, Hannah's HUSBAND even. I quickly put her phone back and when she came out of the shower I acted as nothing was wrong, because I honestly have no idea what the hell to even say. Is she keeping tabs on my exes/women i know? Does she have other fake accounts where she checks what they post? And more importantly WHY??? Why would she do this?? I can't understand it. Is she looking for contact between us or inappropriate posts or what? Please help me, reddit. I am a bad liar and can't keep this bottled in for much longer. Eventually she will know something is up and I need to figure out how to talk to her about this. I just feel so blindsided, this is honestly the last thing I would expect from her. How should I approach this so she won't freak out? TL;DR: Wife has a fake instagram account and is following my exes + other women who have been in my life. She has never exhibited jealous behavior and I am completely blown off course by this. RELEVANT COMMENTS ladyxdi This just sounds like some insecurity issue. You probably told her about how you thought Hannah was the love of your life and that you'd never find anyone better but then you grew up and stopped being a teenager. However, there's probably some idea in the back of her head that you think of Hannah as the one that got away. OOP You may be right :/ I did tell her that I was very upset by the breakup and I thought I loved her, but like you said, I grew up. I was 16 ffs, didn't even know what love was. When I approach her I will definitely address that though and let her know Hannah was definitely not "the one who got away". Thank you for pointing that out Update 1 Nov 30, 2014 (Next Day) First, thank you to everyone for your comments and advice, especially to those of you who admitted doing similar things before. It really did help me when thinking of what to say to her. Today I decided to approach her when we were calm and relaxed after breakfast. The conversation went like this: Me: Hey can I ask you something? Claire: Yea, of course. Me: Who's Cecilia? Claire: (tenses up) Hmm? Me: I was going to take a selfie on your instagram last night when you went to shower and I noticed it wasn't logged into your instagram. It was some other account, a woman named Cecilia? Claire: Oh. Me: Oh? She went quiet for a long minute or two and wouldn't look at me. I reached over and touched her hand lightly and told her that I wasn't upset, I just wanted to know what was going on and wanted her to explain. Basically she told me this: She had always sort of resented my exes, Hannah especially, since I had told her about them. It wasn't about if we were in secret contact with each other, more like she was curious about them. She wanted to see what I had seen in them and she couldn't make a fake facebook profile because people can sniff those out instantly and would just delete her or not accept her friend request. She told me instagram was ideal because strangers follow each other all the time and people are "follower whores" and just accept anyone if they are on private. She told me she people tend to post more of their life on instagram anyway because its so quick to upload a picture. She wanted to glimpse into their lives and see if they were really that extraordinary. I told her I could understand the morbid curiosity of checking out an ex of mine, but why were there normal girls from my life on there too? She told me (rather reluctantly) that she had some bottled up jealousies about them, especially one girl who I work with who is in a band and whos music I thought was okay. She said that she couldn't compete with some of these girl's talents, because she didn't have them, and what started as a small curiosity became an obsession with them and what they do. After she told me all of this, a lot of little things started to click. Claire had begun to point things out in stores and ask me if I liked them, even though they were very far from anything she'd like (furniture, clothing, etc). She had seen exes/girls post these things on their instagrams and was actually checking to see if I was compatible with their tastes. She also used to like indie bands a lot, but ever since getting to know about the girl at work whos in a band, she has completely dropped the genre and began to bash it a little if a song would come on the radio. She has also asked me about seemingly innocent things like a different hair style or color, or even what I would think about certain tattoos (one ex of mine has a full sleeve). These things were very un-Claire (she has this super clean fashionista look/style), but I really just assumed she was trying to branch out or something. Never in a million years would I have guessed it was because she was checking out my exes on instagram. I told her that I understood her curiosity, but that it wasn't healthy or helpful. She might follow these people on instagram, but she doesn't actually know them. She doesn't know if they are good people, if they are even interesting people beyond what they post. I told her to think about how many really extraordinary people she actually meets, and how likely it is that any of these girls are the super amazing people she thinks they are. I pointed out how easy it is for people to make a fake persona online, using her "Cecilia" as an example. I told her Hannah was just a girl I had dated as a teenager, and I grew up and realized what real love was. She was nodding a lot and agreeing with me and the conversation seemed to be going well. Then I asked her to delete the account and she sort of just froze up. She said what did it matter, she wasn't contacting them or harassing them, she was just looking at their pictures. I told her she was fueling an assumption she had about them and that it wasn't healthy to continue to obsess over them. She got angry that I used the word "obsess" and asked me if I thought she was crazy as well. "Is that what you think? That I'm just some crazy obsessed person? Because, you know what I think is crazy? It's crazy to have been in love with someone who cheated on you, and you went after her after she did it. And she continued to cheat on you. And you still went after her. I don't think you'd ever go after me. You've told me that. You've said cheating was a dealbreaker and that would be it. But it wasn't for Hannah. You cried, you went after her. So that means she had something I don't. And yea, maybe it's a little out there with the account and all, but it's the only way I can know for sure. Honestly Mike, I don't even know what you saw in her. Was it the bad taste in furniture or the brand name obsession? But hey. I'm the crazy one right. I'm obsessed. " Woooooaaa. I just sort of sat there open-mouthed at that whole thing and she got up to leave. She said she was very sorry but she couldn't be in this conversation right now and she would come back when she was ready to be level-headed. That was about 2 hours ago and she's still not home. Honestly not sure where to go from here. We have always been able to work out our differences, and she has never quite just exploded on me like that before, so I know this issue is very different from anything we've experienced before. I would really like if she deleted her account and would stop ruminating about these women who have no bearing on our lives anymore, but obviously just touching the subject of it is too much for her right now. Any advice on what to say to her when she's back would be great. tl;dr: Confronted wife on the situation, seemed to be going well until I asked her to delete the account. She blew up about my "serious" ex and left the house. Update 2 Nov 30, 2014 (Later the same day as update 1) First of all, I want to say a million thanks to everyone who commented. Thank you to everyone who gave advice and those who shared their own experiences with this sort of thing. I want to especially thank those of you who told me about your experience being in my wife's shoes. It has helped immensely to know that this seems to be a much more common issue than I had initially believed. Claire came home around 4 and approached me to talk. She apologized for blowing up, for the account, for lying, and for walking out on our argument like that. She acknowledged that she was in the wrong and that she knew her actions were immature. We sat down and talked for a long time about all the things she had been bottling up. It turns out (like many of you guys mentioned in the comments) that she had this idealized view of what my relationship was like with Hannah. I took your advice and explained to her that I was a stupid teen and Hannah was certainly not "the one that got away". I had chased her back then because I had little self respect. She accepted that but she still looked like she was bottling something so I told her to speak freely. From what she said, I can say this. Sometimes when we speak about our exes, we forget that the other person hasn't been in our shoes. They don't realize who this person was as we did. So there were a lot of little things she grabbed onto that I had told her. For example, I told her how when I was with Hannah I would sleep on a park bench outside her house whenever her dad kicked me out because he didn't want some guy staying overnight. She held on to that and she told me that it was a little sad to her, because she felt that spoke a lot about the extent I was willing to go for Hannah. Of course, we have never been in a situation that would warrant me doing that for Claire, so she has no idea if I'd do that for her or not (I would). But again, I was a teenage boy and my family life wasn't so great, so sleeping on a bench in a coat outside my girlfriend's house wasn't such a big deal to me. We spoke about the other exes and women on the list, and went through each one and why she felt the way she did. It was a looong long conversation. But it was also very enlightening. There were a lot of things I told her that I had forgotten about, but clearly she had not. Almost every time it came down to her feeling like they had something she did not, or that I had shared an experience with them that we could not share (going on a trip together, being with me when I had major reconstructive surgery, being with me when my brother died). I told her I loved her very much, and that obviously none of these girls had cut it because it was Claire I was married to. And then she said "Yea but...I feel that if Hannah had never cheated on you...that would've been who you married." And looked extremely sad while saying it. I told her honestly that we could never know for sure because things did not turn out that way, but that most likely not. I would have eventually grown up and gotten over the "wow" of Hannah and moved on with my life. After all this talking, she logged into the instagram and let me watch her delete the account. She promised me to stop insta-stalking and that she would try to be up front with me when she felt insecure about someone. I said to her, very carefully, "I understand. And if you ever think that just talking to me isn't helping, or maybe you want a different opinion, we could always do something like couples' therapy so we could all get some perspective on the matter." She took it very well and agreed. I do think perhaps Claire would benefit from therapy, but I feel that is a choice she has to make on her own. I already put the suggestion out there and let her know it's okay if that needs to be an option. Like I've said, she's never been one to be dramatic or cause issue, so this is a very unique situation and I am much more understanding of it now that we talked and I've read so many similar experiences from the comments. Again, I want to thank everyone who helped. You guys are honestly amazing and so much better than a 300 dollar/hr counselor lol. --- tl;dr: Wife came home and we had a very very long discussion. Put the option of therapy out there so she knows its okay to do if she finds it within herself to go. Account was deleted and a lot of loose ends/assumptions were cleared up. [Old New Updates]: I ran from my abusive ex, and I think he found me
I am NOT OOP. OOP is u/Mysterious-Ruin- Originally posted to r/TrueOffMyChest Previous BoRU [Old New Updates]: I ran from my abusive ex, and I think he found me NEW UPDATES MARKED WITH ---- Editor's note: added paragraph breaks for ease of readability Trigger Warnings: domestic violence, stalking, harassment RECAP Original Post: July 4, 2023 I f (27) ran from my abusive ex when I was 4 months pregnant. I got into a different state. I legally changed my name, and I didn’t name my child the name we had agreed on. He didn’t know my social or my ID number. The only way he had of tracking me down was my name but that was gone, long gone. I had sign into domestic violence safe haven shelters to get into my own place and find a job. I had built a great life for me and my child. I had planned running from him for a little over a year bc it felt like my only way out, he would always find me and drag me back. He made it out to if I don’t take my depression meds I act out and tried to harm myself. The police ended up believing him and became of no help. They brushed off all 4 of my DV calls as simple disagreements. I had saved up just a little over 10k in a bank account my mom had set up to help me get away and come to her so he wouldn’t find out about how much money I really had. My dad helped mostly by putting in a lot more then what I could. He would get suspicious and ask where all my money was going and I would pass it off as bills. In my new town I’ve made very few people aware of my situation, it’s people that could help if something was to happen. These past 2 months I’ve been being watched by someone unknown. He’s always wearing a baseball cap and sun glasses but I could swear on my life it’s my ex. I ended up leaving work a few times due to having panic attacks from seeing the guy. He never interacts with me, only my coworkers. He waits until I’m out of ear shot to speak to order and he gives different names for his orders. My coworkers have thought it was strange bc he comes in almost every other week for a week straight for the past 2 months using different names. After this I went to the police station to speak to one of the people I made friends with and is aware of my situation. He said he would have patrol officers drive by my house and keep a look out. I never seen him around my house or drive by it. I started getting letters in the mail that is from I believe is from him. No one signs them with their name. The envelope only ever has my old name and new address on it. The letters consist of him saying I love you and miss you. It never goes into detail about who is writing them. I took them to the police station to the one I’m friends with. He told me I need to find another place to stay for a while and file for a restraining order. I made a fake account and messaged one of my old friends. They said they was glad to hear from me, they are glad I’m ok, and that he’s been trying to report us as missing which I had already knew. That he’s still there working his old job, but he does go on week long trips and nobody knows where he’s going on them. What’s keeping us from becoming a missing person’s case is my mom. Police had contact her and she told them everything. She showed them proof that I was in fact alive and doing well. She explain why I ran but she said she wouldn’t disclose my location. They ended up contacting me to confirm the story my mom gave them. The police finally after all this time believed me. They asked me if I wanted to come back to file charges or a restraining order. I told them no I want to stay where I’m at and to stay as far as I can from him. Yesterday I had missed my mailman, and he left a slip that I need to sign for a letter. I haven’t order or request anything to have to sign for. I’m not on any government benefits or having any court case going on. I reactivated the fake Facebook and message my old friend again. She said she hasn’t heard anything, but she’ll ask. I keep it active and she messaged me early this morning. She said that there is some talk that he knows where I’m at and he’s thinking about going to court and take me for custody. I asked her if I would get it via mail and would have to sign for it. She said she isn’t sure that’ll I would have to ask the post office. I left the letter there all day yesterday at the post office instead of calling them and going to get it. I don’t think I want to go pick it up. I don’t want to face the possible truth that he has found me. I don’t want to go back to that town. I don’t want to go back to my old life. I don’t want to relive the nightmare I had finally escape. I don’t know what to do at this point. Edit: I just want to say thank you first for all the kind words and advice you all have gave me. After I made this post I went to work. When I got to work they said a guy came in looking for me, they described my ex. They kept telling him I don’t work there and if he comes back in they’ll have him arrested cause apparently he threw a big fit when they said I don’t work there. I was given permission to leave to seek legal help. I went to my friend that’s a cop and got me in contact with a few lawyers. I had spoken to one and he’s taking my case. He filed stalking, harassment, and domestic violence against him. He has also filed a CPO. They issued a warrant and cops are combing the area to find him. They all have his picture and name, they aren’t going to stop until they have him in custody. I sat and cried bc this has been my life for the pass 4 almost 5 years since I ran that he’s trying to ruin. Where I live they rule in favor of the mother when it comes to domestic violence. Apparently since I left he was with someone that file charges against him for domestic violence and it got dropped. Thank you so for all the kind words and advice, I have appreciated it beyond the words I could say. Update #1: July 15, 2023 (11 days later) Here is the long awaited update. He was caught that late night/early morning when he ran a stop light heading back home. He was processed and sat in his cell waiting to appear in front of the judge on his warrant for domestic violence which was that following Thursday. When he was arrested and processed they served him the CPO. As he was being processed he obviously got a call. He had called his dad and told him everything. His dad told him he didn’t raise a woman beater, and he wasn’t bailing him out. They also seen he had another warrant that had been issued a few days prior back home. Apparently the girl he was with left him while he was away and pressed domestic violence charges against him as well. I’m not sure what they’ll do with him now that he has charges in 2 different places or how that will work. He had appear in front of the judge on Thursday and said they was holding him on a $100,000 because they considered him dangerous and an extreme flight risk. He sat there until the following Tuesday when he was released to the other police department that they had contacted to let them know. He is now currently up there waiting for his bond to be set. They said he’s most likely not getting one from them but will sit there. He was made to serve 30 days in jail on his warrant back home. Cops had said he probably won’t be let loose pinning both trials due to the circumstances surrounding his case and him being extremely dangerous while being a flight risk. They are going to do their best to keep him in jail until his convictions in both cases. He has CPO issue against him in both. I ask them to keep my name redacted out of everything just in case this breaks to the media. I have purchased a gun, bear spray, and other forms of protection. We have moved and still in contact with the cop that I was friends with. For the first time in a long time I finally feel free, and I can live without fear. Sorry for making you guys wait for an update. Update #2: July 26, 2023 (11 days later) I heard today that they have found witnesses to his abuse that can account for the other girl’s abuse. Since this came to light he has change his plea in both cases to guilty. They aren’t going to have a trial for either of the cases just a court date for sentencing. I believe he knew he was fucked when witnesses was mentioned. He has gotten sloppy with his abuse the last few years. I hope he rots! ----NEW UPDATES---- Editor's note: the next two updates are over 1.5 years old, and they have not been posted here onto the sub Final Update: February 4, 2024 (over 6.5 months later) He got 2 counts of felony stalking (me and our daughter), 2 counts of harassment (me and my daughter), 2 counts of domestic violence (me and the other girl), 2 counts of felony assault (me and the other girl), 1 count of endangering a minor (my daughter), and 1 count of resisting arrest. They hit him with everything they legally could. This is what he got for each charge: 2 counts of felony stalking- 2 years (year for each charge) 2 counts of harassment- 4 months (2 months for each charge) 2 counts of domestic violence- 8 months (4 months for each charge) 2 counts of felony assault- 4 years (2 years for each charge) 1 count of child endangerment- 180 days 1 count of resisting arrest- 90 days He’s to serve them consecutively. They didn’t punish him with the max sentence on the felonies cause he pled guilty and waved a trial, just took the sentencing. They wanted this done and over. The sentencing took a little longer bc where it was between 2 states. He’ll serve all his time in one state then transfer to another and serve his time there. Me and my baby has since relocated and thank god every day for the ones that helped. I’m still in contact with the people I knew at my old home. They are glad we are doing well. Life after I ran from my abusive ex: June 10, 2024 (four months later from the final update) Long time no see ☺️ After the sentencing me and my baby felt relieved. We decided to go out and live a little. We went down to Florida and visit all the beaches we could find. We made a B-line to Disney World. I would’ve spent every penny on this planet cause we finally felt like we was living life. We made our way up to Nashville and showed her my love for country music. After leaving Nashville we went back to my hometown. It was so much to process, we ended up starting therapy when we got there. It’s a long road of healing and we decided to settle here for a little bit, so she gets to know her awesome grandpa (his dad). My parents are flying in, and we are going to go to family therapy. I plan to go back to my home but right now I want to heal the place I got lost in and broke. I feel pulled here to heal, to gather myself, and to find a way to let my past here go. I feel like I won’t be able to move on if I don’t. I’m glad he didn’t affect our child very much. I don’t think my baby had the understanding of what was going on. If I post any more updates I’m not going to give very many details about us to protect our identity. I’m going to go to school so I can work in social services and help women that was in my shoes. I’m going to wait until I’m in a healthier mindset and better mental state. I just wanted to give this final life update because I’m so proud of myself and the life we are now living and pushing through for. Me [25 F] with my boyfriend [25 M] duration 7 months. My boyfriend is very jealous and keeps making "rules" for me to follow. (LONG)
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/rulesrulesrules7 Me [25 F] with my boyfriend [25 M] duration 7 months. My boyfriend is very jealous and keeps making "rules" for me to follow TRIGGER WARNING: Abusive behavior, controlling behavior, gaslighting, manipulation, verbal abuse, infidelity MOOD SPOILER: An amazing ending for OOP Original Post Apr 4, 2015 Hello, everyone. I have a bit of a weird predicament to share with you. I have been dating my boyfriend ("Peter") for about 7 months now. When we get along, we get along spectacularly. Our chemistry is off the charts, we're playful, we're both driven, we have similar interests (same career path, both read for leisure, both interested in exercise). I've been told by many friends that they can just sense how much we care about each other and that we have the same disposition: calm, relaxed, sweet. If not for the following stuff, I would be head over heels for him. Hell, I already am when he's not acting this way. So this stuff started happening about a month in. Peter is an extremely jealous person. He's admitted this to me. He can also be a bit judgmental and conservative. The following is a list of things he's asked me to do for him throughout the course of our relationship. I haven't asked for anything like this in return and I've even asked him if he feels like I've done the same and he's said no: No cursing. No low-cut shirts. No weed (not a big deal, I've smoked < 10 times and was okay with giving this up for him). He prefers me to not get "drunk." Not a big deal, I don't drink a lot, but it kind of sucks that I can never let loose and get tipsy with my friends without a comment from him. No perverted jokes: with him, or anyone else. He says the jokes would be funny if a guy said them but they're not funny when I do it. No using a joking "little kid" voice with friends - even girls. No talking about other guys around him because he thinks I'm trying to make him jealous. No talking about past relationships, even though he does this. No emoticons in texts with other guys. No exclamation points or sounding "too flirty or happy" when talking to guys. Audibly say "goodbye" when we part ways. Verbally greet him, even if I'm late to class. No speaking to male friends on the telephone or texting after 10 pm at night. Text him when I leave my apartment and I'm on the way to school. This isn't a specific rule, but if I don't text him for 3-4 hours during the day, he'll say "Oh, hi there, silent one. What have you been up to?" He likes me to stop by his study space when I get to school, before class, after class, and before I leave at the end of the day. He's stopped by my space less than 10 times in our 7 months together. He asks me if I'm "behaving" when we're not together physically. We've had a bit of a power struggle when I've wanted to go out with my group of friends. There is a structured timetable of how much I'm allowed to talk to my ex. We broke up two years ago and a half and had a year of silence. Recently, we've been speaking on facebook. (He doesn't have my phone number). It's random stuff about our undergraduate. Just friendly stuff, lighthearted. I'm only allowed to talk to him once every three weeks for 10-15 minutes. If he facebooks me and it's been outside those three weeks, I'm not supposed to respond. He still gets mad even when the ex facebooks me. I'm not supposed to "flirt" with members of the opposite sex. I don't. However, he's seen interactions between guys and me and it appears he thinks that anything along the lines of smiling, laughing, or sarcasm are grounds for flirting. He "doesn't like" easily 80% of the guys I interact with on a regular basis. There have been a few incidents that have bothered me in the time we've been together. In the interest of time, the most recent problem he and I have been having is my friend named James. James graduated last year from the program that Peter and I are in together. He's a big brother type to me. He was an assigned TA for the class I was in and I went to a study group he led. We became friends. We've been friends for three years and nothing has ever happened and neither James nor I have ever shown any interest in it. We just have similar political views and give each other dating advice on occasion. James came to visit the school and he and I got together for lunch while he was here. He was here for 3 days and I saw him once for only an hour. Before he visited, we texted back and forth maybe once every ten days. Since he visited, it's been 2-3 times a week, about 10 texts at a time. Nothing outrageous. I imagine it'll start lessening when it's been longer since his visit and exams approach. He's in a new city without a lot of friends and I enjoy talking to him. Because he's working, he usually texts me on Saturday and Sunday more than the work week. James texted me last Saturday morning. I didn't answer so he followed up with a text on Sunday. We chatted briefly about a TV show. Then he texted me again this Saturday to tell me about his date the night before. This has been driving Peter up the wall. He's demanded to see the texts back and forth. Even though I strongly object to this, as I think it's an invasion of privacy only 7 months in, I let him see all the texts. There was nothing inappropriate there (this is where the "no emoticon" rule came from though). However, Peter says that James is a "shark" and is only friends with me because he wants to date me. This is ridiculous because James and I have no feelings towards each other, act more like siblings, and are going to be living in different states for the rest of our lives. Peter causes a fight EVERY time he notices James texting me or gets pouty and silent until I ask him what's wrong, then we fight. About two hours ago, Peter gave me another rule. He wants me to arrange it so James only texts me once a week. No word yet on how many texts I would be "allowed" to exchange with him. He also says he doesn't want us talking about "intimate things." When I asked him what that entailed, he brought up that he was mad that I told James that I was going to take a nap in the last conversation we had. I only told James that as a conversation-ender so he wouldn't wonder why I wasn't responding. Peter just seems unreasonable. I guess, here's the big problem. I feel like Peter gets mad about something, fights with me until I'm worn down, then comes up with a "compromise" which is really just him imposing another rule on me. There was a guy who liked me at the beginning of the year that I eventually just had to block on my phone because Peter got so mad about it. He's asked me twice to show him that the guy is really blocked. He really is. Same thing happened with the ex and I know his end game is me never speaking to the ex again. Peter had a jealousy issue with my friend Rob and wore me down to the point that I basically just avoid Rob now (Rob even approached to ask if I was mad at him and apologize for whatever he did). I just feel like this is going to keep happening over and over. I never get the benefit of the doubt, James is constantly afraid I'm going to be "stolen" and I feel like I teeter-totter between wanting to give him what he asks so he'll feel comfortable and feeling like it will never be enough. I feel like a caged animal. I'm afraid every time James texts me or any guy speaks to me in front of Peter. I like him so much but this jealousy is driving me crazy. I'm also afraid if we're together, I'm going to get to the point where I'm not allowed to be friendly with 50% of the population. I'm in danger of losing a total of 3 good, respectful guy friends, all of which I've known for longer than Peter. (I knew Rob for two years, James for 3, and the ex for nearly 6). I'm not a bad person or a bad girlfriend and I'm tired of being treated this way. We fight at least weekly, sometimes twice a week, over an issue like this. I just want it to stop and to be with the person I fell so hard for. But I also don't want to end up in a controlling relationship with someone who can't manage their jealousy. Any advice? Ever been on his side or mine? He's already going to a counselor but our school only provides one every two weeks and he missed his last appointment. He's open to couple's counseling but I don't know if there's a point 7 months in. Because he missed the last appointment, he hasn't brought up the jealousy thing with his counselor yet. He's willing to read books on this topic but I feel like the problem is that he won't start to get better until he really trusts me and wants to change. He says that he does but then he keeps doing this stuff. tl;dr: Very jealous boyfriend continually gives me "rules." Sample list above (not all of them). Any ideas on how to make him more comfortable? Is this fixable? Have you been on either side of something like this? RELEVANT COMMENTS MeltMyCheeseKThxBai You just presented us with a literal bullet point list of why you need to break the fuck up with him, ASAP. PETER is the shark here. And actually, you're right- this WILL keep happening over and over. Not only will it keep happening, but it will keep escalating. Here is a list for you, and I will call it "Soon." Soon, you will be afraid to walk around while looking anywhere but the ground because you don't want to be accused of purposely making eye contact with someone. Soon, you will compliantly give him access to all of your stuff to placate him and he will peruse your personal stuff regularly; many confrontations will result about your "infractions" and he will spring them on you at inconvenient times. Soon, you will not be allowed to interact or be friendly with anyone who isn't on his approved list; this will eventually include your family. Soon, while you're constantly on eggshells afraid to be accused of cheating, you will find out that he actually cheated on you. Maybe with one of those exes he likes to talk about. Because, you see, these types are so paranoid about cheating because they are cheaters and think everyone else will cheat too. Soon, if you have a job, he will be asking about your coworkers and maybe even show up there for a "surprise inspection". Don't be surprised if soon, additionally, he starts the practice of keeping you up all night fighting and not letting you sleep when he knows you have to work. Soon, you will stop butting heads about you going out with friends. This is because he will make your every attempt so miserable that you will give up to make things "easier". Soon, you will be but a shell of your former self and will wonder who the fuck that is staring at you in the mirror. Soon, he may become violent. He likely won't until he has effectively removed your support systems (friends and family) but eventually he damn near certainly will. I hope that SOON you heed the warnings and get the fuck away from this lunatic before he ruins you. Seriously, you have to get this. This is very, very bad. He will not change no matter how much counseling he gets. You modifying your behavior will NEVER change his. He is fucking dangerous and you need to end it with him NOW before he gets the chance to employ more advanced tactics on you. You are in dire need of these two books; "The Gift of Fear" and "Why Does He Do That?" I beg you, read them. Please seriously get the fuck away from this person. Edit: More stuff coming Soon to a relationship near you (will add as I think of them): Soon, he will call you "slut" and/or "whore" for the first time because "he told you not to wear that shirt". You will get upset. You also will never wear that shirt again. OOP I don't live near my family but there was a time last weekend where I was texting my family about a basketball game. We were cuddling on the couch and he took the phone away and said "Babe, can we just have 'us' time? We've been fighting all day and I just want to be with you." So that might be eminent. We fought today after James texted me about his date last night. I've been sick with a 101+ fever the past two days and cuddling with my childhood stuffed animal. He picked her up and acted like he was going to rip her arm off because he "wanted to scare me" and "see what I would do." I had to stop myself from kicking him. I've had the animal since I was 5 and she's from my dead grandmother. I don't know what I would do if she was broken. When I got her back, I tried to kick Peter out and he wouldn't leave. I ended up throwing his shoes and keys into the hallway and pushing him out the door. He took me out to lunch and then went back to the library. Now he's mad that we're going to bed angry. This was one of the texts I got this afternoon: "I know you don't want to hurt his (meaning James) feelings by telling him to take it easy on texts but you need to consider your boyfriend's feelings about this guy texting you so often every week. What he is doing is crossing my boundary. I know you don't want to hurt his feelings so I get you might not want to tell him flat out to stop texting. There are other ways. The main point is that this is too much and it is crossing a line of mine. I think once a week might be ideal and if we could reach that, it would ease my feelings. I ask that you consider my feelings. In return, I will make sure my jealousy does not lead me to imposing boundaries. You can tell him the truth: that he is crossing my boundaries and I ask that he respects me. I am being reasonable. All of our fights the last few weeks have been about this. If this goes away, then we both win and we can stay together happier." When I asked him what he's ever done in exchange for what I've given up, he said that he went through a phase of criticizing me and he's gotten better. That that was real change. Then he told me that I mean the world to him and he wouldn't go out of his way to try and fix our issues if he didn't care about me and being together for the future. I told him I wanted a break. Update May 1, 2015 (1 month later) Hi, all. Sorry that I dropped off and stopped responding all the sudden. I want to take a moment to sincerely thank you all for the outpouring of support and kindness that you showed me after my original post. I've read every single comment and PM probably 4 times and watched every lecture that was sent my way. I also went and picked up a book two days ago about controlling relationships which was recommended to me by a few redditors. I've read 160 pages so far. Honestly, I'm so turned around in this relationship that I don't know what's happening anymore. I do think that this relationship has some disturbingly manipulative and controlling elements coming from Peter. We've had several incidents in the last four weeks which have been very disheartening. Here are a sample: I went out to happy hour with friends - a guy and girl that are engaged to each other - at 5 pm while Peter studied. I guess he assumed we were eating dinner together because we eat most of our meals together. He didn't confirm that though. He knew where I was going and who I was with. I put my phone away because my friends both had their phone away and it was just us three. My phone was on silent because I had been in the library. I checked my phone every half hour or so. The last time I checked it, he had sent me a text asking about dinner and then a snarky follow up 15 minutes later. I had order an appetizer with my friends and wasn't hungry. I told him to go ahead and eat without me and we'd meet up later. I decided to go back to my friends' house to play with their dog and have another beer. Peter had told me that he was going to study until 10 pm and then wanted to spend the night together. All the sudden, Peter was mad at me for not telling him I was eating, not telling him we switched locations (even though I did, within 10 minutes of switching places) and telling me that he had right as my boyfriend to know where I was. He said I was inconsiderate and selfish. He was texting me every 10-15 minutes, angry at me, and completely ruined the night. I couldn't hide from my friends that I was upset and it was borderline humiliating. I went home by 10 pm but didn't want to see him because I was angry. He didn't apologize until the next day after we talked about it extensively and even then tried to justify it. I feel weird around my friends now that they've seen this. There was another incident when we ran into one of my good friends and I stopped to chat with her. Peter and I had spend the night together, had lunch together, and gone on a walk. I caught up with my friend for 3 minutes and then planned on walking to Peter's study space to chat for a few minutes before going back to my friend to study with her. (Peter likes to say "goodbye" even though we study like 20 ft apart, separated by a wall.) Peter got impatient, felt ignored, and walked off. Then he sent me several texts about how rude and inconsiderate I was by pretending that he wasn't there. That wasn't true at all; I was telling my friend I liked her sweater, asking her how she was, then I was going to exit with Peter to fill my water bottle and say goodbye. This blew up into a 3 hour argument via text. I had my best friend from home visiting last weekend. She stayed with me and drove 18 hours round trip in 4 days just to see me. Peter constantly texted, made passive aggressive comments if I didn't respond quickly enough, and generally was negative about me not giving him enough attention. I pointed all this out, he agreed and told me he would calm down. We all went to a dinner on her last night in town and I thought it went nicely. When Peter got out of the car, my friend made a comment that she was glad to see Peter and I getting along better. 5 minutes later, I got a text from Peter criticizing me, accusing me of not acting like a "couple" with him, acting distant, and not holding his hand. I was shocked. I thought I did a great job with the conversation, he talked for his fair share amount of time, and he got along well with my friend. She's been my best friend for 10 years. He said he hates how I "always do this." I have literally no idea what he's talking about. This wasn't a date. This was the first time he met one of the people who was most important to me and the last thing I wanted to do was make her feel like a third wheel. I told him I wasn't going to argue while she was in town but obviously was upset for the rest of the night. He apologized the next day but only after a long conversation. Obviously he didn't make a great impression once my friend saw the aftermath of dinner. Peter and I had a good day on Tuesday. We had fun, were getting along, etc. I came over to his place, took a nap, he went to soccer, and then I ordered us dinner. We ate together and bonded. I checked my phone (I keep it in my backpack now, at his request) and he saw I had a text. He wanted to know who it was from and what it said. I told him it was from James, asking where I was studying this summer (my home state or school state). Peter started lecturing me about getting texts after 10 pm (it was 10:30 where we were, 9:30 where James was). He talked about how it was inappropriate, he wouldn't talk to a girl so late, and asked why James wanted to know where I was. He asked if James was planning on visiting me. James and I have no plans like that whatsoever. Later, I got chapstick out of my backpack and Peter started accusing me of sneaking around to text James back. I wasn't. He asked me three times if that's what I did. I almost left but Peter convinced me to stay. All of the sudden, I felt suspicious. I asked to see his facebook chat log so I could see when he had lasted facebooked his ex that he swears he hasn't spoken to. He refused. I ended up leaving, then coming back and saying if he wouldn't show me the same transparency he's demanded from me, it was over. He still tried to say no. In retrospect, I'm horrified by how angry I felt. I wanted to push him or hit him. I've never, ever felt like that towards another person. It's like I didn't recognize myself. He ended up showing me the log. He had a long conversation with his ex from Christmas Eve, which was laden with inside jokes, flirting, and sexual references. I asked to see his phone. Whole months were missing from his call log but he had two voicemails from her which insinuated they had some contact with each other. He swears that's all there is but almost half his call log is gone. This is something I could forgive in a normal relationship -with remorse and change - but it hurts a lot considering that he's breaking rules he's given me, lied, and been hypocritical. I feel so watched and suffocated over actual guy friends, subjected myself to structured timetables imposed by him, had an open phone policy, and he's off talking about suggestive stuff with his ex. She's blocked him now but that's not the point. He's got me to the point where I feel guilty every time a male friend talks to me and I've actually started believing that I'm doing something wrong if I laugh at a guy friend's joke. I feel sick when my phone goes off if I'm around him. I've been reading literature on controlling/abusive relationships and shared my concerns with him that he's meandering into this territory. He's been dismissive of it almost every time I've brought it up. I've had three friends tell me they're concerned based on the rules and his jealousy. He just says he has high standards and boundaries and that I would be jealous too if the roles were reversed. I don't think I would be but he insists I would. I just feel like he doesn't listen to me or take me seriously. I thought things were getting better, he said I could text James whenever I wanted and he would be less harsh/critical in general. Yesterday though, he asked if I had responded to James and why "that guy" wanted to know where I was and said it was weird James was being so nosy. I think James was just making conversation. Then, last night, I was studying with friends and Peter walked by. Peter and I had just fought (we had been at dinner 10 minutes before) and I was mid-word in conversation with a friend and just made eye contact with him and looked away. I got a text asking why I didn't smile and wave. I apologized and said it was my fault and didn't mean to hurt his feelings. I then got more texts saying I was "cold" and demanding an explanation. That got me upset and I tried to tell him that the constant criticism and control was too much. That I felt like he was trying to control my emotions and make me pretend to be happy when I wasn't. He told me I was overreacting and he was tired of arguing and just wanted "to be good and nice." I feel like he starts a fight, expresses his feelings, then wants it to be over, even though the criticism and control is really wearing me down and making me agitated. I just feel like if I stay with him, I'm going to end up giving in and letting him criticize me, letting go of my guy friends, and apologizing when I mess up. That I'll just end up a shell of myself and cater to his needs instead of compromising. But I also don't think he's doing this on purpose. I think he gets insecure and doesn't know how to fix it, so he wants me to do it instead of asking himself if he's overreacting. I think that's how we get all these rules. He's fixing symptoms and not the root cause. I don't think any of this is malicious. I tried to break up with him again two days ago. He begged me to wait until after finals (8 days). Eventually I agreed but said that there would be no sleep overs or physical affection. He agreed but now he's trying to kiss me even when I tell him I don't want to kiss. Then he gets mad I'm not kissing back. He says he knows now that he's being controlling and manipulative and he'll change. But I'm not seeing any change. I just feel so confused as to whether I'm overreacting or not. I can't tell if he's actually being a little abusive and he makes me doubt myself because he doesn't call me names or hurt me physically. He wants to read the book when I'm done with it and says he'll learn from it and wants to stay with me. In 8 day finals are over. In 17 days, I graduate from law school. I just feel so bad about myself and confused. I've always been an empathetic person and emotionally intelligent person (that's usually what I'm "known for" by friends... know how to say the right thing at the right time and see things from other people's perspectives) but I feel so steamrolled. I'm also so embarrassed. I'm supposed to be this strong, capable woman and I can't even tell if my relationship is healthy. Right now, I'm planning on dumping Peter the second his final is over and blocking him on everything. I feel relief when I think about that. But I also feel scared that I'll miss him and that I'm being crazy and unwilling to compromise. That I'm throwing away something good by being dramatic. I keep trying to convince myself, apart from the question of whether he's controlling, that if I'm not happy, I can't stay with Peter. That long distance is too hard. He wants to interview at law firms in my city and plan on how to get back together in a year. I can't do that if I have any doubts and I don't want to spend another day miserable. I HAVE to dump him. I just need to make sure I do. I've already tried multiple times. I can't get talked back into this. This isn't healthy. Sidenote: He knows that I've posted on here but not what my username is and he hasn't seen the original post. It's a possibility he could stumble upon this and he would obviously recognize it because of this level of detail. TL;DR: I feel like a crazy person. I'm doubting my emotions. I know I need to break up with him but I'm so worried I'm being overdramatic and ruining something because I'm unreasonable. I know I need to get out but why am I so reluctant to? Final Update from the "Rules" girl - I did it. May 25, 2015 (24 days after 1st update) I finally did it. Today I took the last step and blocked him on all my accounts (10 minutes ago). We're going no contact. You all were right that he used the time before and immediately after finals to draw me back in. I don't really regret waiting though. I didn't want to be the reason that he ended up messing up all his finals and potentially not getting a job he wanted because of grades. That isn't the person that I want to be and I'm okay with sacrificing a few weeks of my happiness for retaining that part of myself. The following weeks were full of his apologies, assurances that he's changing, etc. But nothing changed. I realized that I didn't even want to wait around to see if he could get better because I don't want to be with him. He's not respectful of me and you can't teach respect. He seems completely incapable of empathizing with me and taking me into consideration when making plans. He wouldn't listen to me, he was dismissive of my concerns, and I just didn't feel valued, supported, or happy when we spoke. When I broke up with him, he said that's what he wanted too because my interactions with men (including James) are "inappropriate" and "not in line with his beliefs." Two months ago that would have really bothered me and I would have gotten reeled back in defending myself but I just said "You know that's not true but I'm not going to fight with you about it. I wish you the best. Goodbye." and then blocked him. I feel a little sad and lonely. It'll be weird to go from nearly constant contact and cutesy text messages to complete and utter silence but I'm hoping the payoff of not having horrible fights multiple times a week will balance that out. The good news: I graduated last week, made honor roll, got the highest award in a competitive class, I'm back in my home state, living with my parents (I adore them and get along well with them), and my bar review class starts tomorrow morning. I'm back to running and lifting multiple times a week and I'm in the process of booking up my social calendar. It'll be hard to stop checking my phone compulsively and sad going to sleep without saying goodnight to him, but I think that I'm in the best circumstances (aka not living one building away) to make this fade as gently as possible. I've reached out to a friend already and she supports my decision. I'll reach out to a few others this afternoon. The hardest part of this is letting go of the fantasy that he would get better and I could have this intense, passionate, beautiful relationship with him that was also healthy. I let his possessiveness slide because I felt so intensely cared about. But now I know what to watch out for in the future. I'm going to remain single for the rest of 2015 in an effort to build myself back up and prevent another toxic relationship. I will protect myself in the future the way I would protect a friend. I'm 25 now and I need to start taking who I date more seriously because I don't want to end up married to someone like Peter. I'm scared of the future, of being with someone like him, and of never feeling this level of passion again. I'm especially afraid that I really am all the things he accused me of being. But I know I'm doing the right thing. This is usually when he would come running to my door, knocking, waiting, and begging me to unblock him. This is the first time I won't. Thank you, so much, for your support and patience. This sub gets a lot of grief for a myriad of reasons but you all do so much good. So much more than you even know. I am eternally grateful to each and every one of you that commented and especially those that direct messaged me. You all were a lifeline to me when I wasn't ready to turn to my friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. tl;dr: I dumped him. Got accused of sort-of cheating (again) during the break up. Feeling weird but relieved. Blocked him on everything. Just wanted to share the good news. Two years out of an abusive relationship and I'm so happy, I could burst. July 29, 2017 (over 2 years later) Two years ago, I posted some rather desperate r/relationships questions asking for help. (If you're curious the initial cry for help, starting to gather strength to leave, the jubilant break up post. I knew deep down that something was desperately wrong with my relationship but I was hellbent on fixing it. The posts were the beginning of finding my way out of what felt like a mindfog. I tried to post on relationships to let people know how it was going, in the hopes that if there were people considering leaving similar situations, they know that something better is out there. Unfortunately, relationships doesn't allow multiple posts. However, I felt an intense desire to share the "after" part of leaving an abusive relationship to let women know that there IS life after an abuser, even if they feel like their world will cease without the relationship. I hope this sub is an okay place for this. It only took about two months after my break up to know that I would 100% be okay. That moment came while I was on a family vacation and was curling my hair in the mirror. I made eye contact with my reflection. I remember being startled because I saw someone looking back that looked calm. She wasn't worried about whether she'd get called slutty, whether smiling too much at dinner would get her accused of cheating, or whether the swimsuit she chose for the pool would get her accused of "showing off" and yelled at. For the first time in a year, I felt happy, safe, and confident. I became nearly giddy realizing I hadn't been criticized in months and I felt FREE. It took so much for me to get out of the relationship. I think I was borderline addicted to the highs and lows. Every time I started to escape, I got "love bombed" (learned this term in my research post-break up) and pulled back in. I was worried nothing would ever feel as good as that relationship. However, I followed all the “standard break up advice” and worked out, reconnected with friends, started up new hobbies and (very importantly!) went to counseling. It was a long road, but a much easier one than I originally expected. And at the end of it, I was happy. Here's a list of things that have happened to me in the last two years that have been better than that relationship: Passing my state's bar to become a lawyer; Starting a new job where I feel challenged and respected; Getting a gorgeous new apartment downtown; Getting into the best shape of my life; Making friends with a strong group of intelligent, kickass women that my ex would have never let me befriend; Drinking/smoking/sleeping without being guilted for not following my ex's expectations for what I should be doing with my time; Getting a cat and not needing to worry about her safety around my ex or him getting jealous; Leaving my house without having to give text updates about where I am; Smiling at strangers without being questioned over it; Being approached to run for office in 2018 and saying yes because I want to do it; and Literally everything. Here's what I want to say to anyone who is interested: Anyone can get sucked into an abusive relationship. It doesn't matter how smart you are, how confident you are, or how independent you want to be. Just because you’re in one doesn’t make you dumb or worthless. It doesn’t make you easy prey or unable to be in a healthy relationship next time. The only antidote is listening to your gut and respecting boundaries that you put into place for your own life. There were so many times that I felt a pit in my stomach and knew something was wrong but ignored it because I felt like a compromise could be found. Some people out there are scary, they are manipulative, and they do not want the best for you. They only care about themselves and you cannot make them respect you, value you, or treat you well. When you meet that person, don't try to change them. Cut your losses and leave. Don't let their voice get in your head and to start believing their narrative of who you are. It took me nearly a year to undo the damage that an 8 month relationship did to me. (Can you believe things got this bad in 8 months?!) I would internally feel myself panic for months after the break up when I laughed too much with my friends, thinking that I would be getting lectured about being fake/flirty/inappropriate. It took me so long to start making sarcastic jokes again (my ex didn't "get them" or think they were funny). I basically had to regrow all myself self confidence and redefine myself worth. I could barely even express an opinion on where I wanted to eat since it hadn't mattered in so long. Once I got past that, I remember marveling at the tranquility of my life being mine, my self esteem returning to normal, and people treating me gently/kindly. My parents told me I was happier than they’d seen me in a year and my best friend told me that she was glad “to have me back.” (Side note: Counseling is IMPORTANT. People that are in an abusive relationship are more likely to get into another one than someone who has never been abused. When you are being abused, up looks like down and down looks like up. Going to counseling helped me re-orient, figure out what was normal, and taught me to listen to my gut. It helped me rebuild and make sure this wouldn’t happen again. I didn’t even need many sessions but I actually liked it by the end! I’m forever a gigantic advocate of finding a counselor that fits your needs well.) I don’t want this to be the point of my post, so I’m putting it last. I took a dating hiatus for 6 months after the break up and tried to rebuild on my own. I think this was extremely important to help me re-center. After the six month hiatus, I wrote out parameters for dating and a list of things I needed in a partner (kindness, gentleness, warmth, an even temper). I was picky, I stopped seeing people that I felt weren’t listening to me or weren’t treating me well. After six months of dating, I found someone that fit the list. I’ve been dating him for a bit over a year, and I can’t stress how different this relationship is. It’s night and day. I’m listened to, respected, treated like a real partner, and my boundaries matter. I can be friends with whoever I want (I’m still good friends with James!) and my alone time is given with no questions asked. Tl;dr: I was in an abusive relationship, asked reddit for help, and they came through. Life is so much better post-break up. I want to emphasize this can happen to anyone, just because it’s happening doesn’t mean you deserve it. Get out! Life gets better than you can imagine. Roped into our neighbors’ search warrant because we live in a duplex. Police seized our iPad only used for art.
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/typewrytten Originally posted to r/legaladvice Roped into our neighbors’ search warrant because we live in a duplex. Police seized our iPad only used for art. Trigger Warnings: police brutality, destruction of property Original Post: June 10, 2025 My wife and I live in the upstairs unit of a duplex in Minnesota. The two units have separate house numbers and are independent, aside from a shared entryway, garage, and trash cans. We have our own keys, front doors inside the entryway, mailboxes, electric meters, etc. Earlier this week, multiple police officers and a SWAT unit executed a search warrant for the downstairs unit. The warrant was for narcotics and firearms. At 7 am on the dot, the Minneapolis Police Department showed up with no sirens and blocked off the street on both sides of the house. They then forcibly broke down the shared entryway door, then the downstairs neighbors’ front door, and also the man door to the garage, which actually left a small dent in our car parked inside (not major, but still). Our front door, the one to our upstairs unit, is the only exterior door that still works in the entire building because I opened it myself when they told us to come up with our hands up. They shoved rifles in our faces, cuffed us, and put us in the back of a squad car, where we were for about two hours while they searched both apartments. They uncuffed us about an hour in but we were not allowed to leave the car. They initially told us that the warrant was for downstairs (street address 50—not the real number), and asked us repeatedly if we lived there. We said no, we live at 48 and have no connection to the people in 50. We literally just moved here less than six months ago from out of state. The most we interact with the folks in 50 is a “hey how are you?” if we happen to be in the entryway together. They asked if the apartments connected at all once inside the respective front doors (they do not). They also asked my wife multiple times if she was a specific downstairs neighbor (she is not). Both my wife and that specific neighbor are black women. Then they told us the warrant was for “the entire building” and the garage. Eventually, they printed us a second warrant on the spot that listed our upstairs address, which we only got after the searches were over. We were also directly told by an apologetic sergeant that this had nothing to do with us and we were “just caught in the crossfire.” During the search of our unit, which was not as thorough as 50’s, they seized my wife’s iPad. The only thing on this iPad is my wife’s art. Nobody touches this iPad save for my wife, not even me. They left all other electronics untouched, including my own iPad and our laptops. Meanwhile, they took every single electronic device from all the folks in 50, including their cellphones and work computers. My wife did sign a document allowing them to search the iPad. We were told it could take a month or more if she didn’t, and her art is one of our revenue streams. We can’t afford to be without it for an extended period of time. We did get a receipt. We don’t own firearms and don’t use or sell illicit drugs. We are law abiding citizens with nothing to hide. The worst things in our apartment are weed (legal here), blunt prop swords, prescribed medication, and angry cats. All were left unharmed. No arrests were made, so I’m assuming nothing illegal was found downstairs either. The whole scene was very overwhelming and frankly a little terrifying, especially with guns pointed at us first thing in the morning. I’m kicking myself for not paying better attention because the situation feels off to me. I was more worried about making sure the cops didn’t manhandle my wife and knew about our escape artist cat. I’m also disabled, so sitting with my hands cuffed behind me so tightly for so long was not a great experience and I was/am in a lot of pain. Was this all on the level? Can they search both units when they are separate like this? Is it normal to print off a new warrant off on the spot? Why only take her iPad and leave everything else while taking everything from downstairs, especially when it has literally nothing to do with anything going on in 50? How can we get it back as soon as possible? Do we need to get a lawyer? We do not have lawyer money right now and we weren’t charged with anything, so I don’t know how PDs work in that regard. I’m keeping an eye on the iPad via FindMy because I don’t know what else to do. This is a completely new situation for both of us; I think we have one speeding ticket between us. Location: Minnesota EDIT: y’all, the iPad is backed up to the iCloud. I don’t have another device for her to use and I cannot afford one rn. Stop lecturing me on the importance of back ups. Edit 6/10: Y’all if I see this on TikTok with a shitty Minecraft parkour video in the background, I s2g. Editor's note: OOP made lots of responses, I am listing the common questions asked and responses Relevant Comments Commenter 1: Only mistake was allowing them to look at the iPad. The police can lie to you, the month thing could've been a lie, or more likely that it'll take over a month regardless, probably longer since they have a document ostensibly justifying the seizure. Pretty sure it's all digital now, the copy your neighbours got was probably printed in the same way. Depends on how the warrant's worded if it was legal. If it specifies their apartment number (assuming the apartments are zoned as separate apartments) then they had no business going into your apartment. Likely you'll have to wait a while. You still want to speak with the police about wanting your belongings back, sometimes valuable evidence not relevant to any case gets "lost", when that happens no police officer seems capable of providing assistance. OOP: I’m not sure how we would have stopped them from looking at it. They would have just seized it anyway and hooked it up to a passcode cracker. I have its exact location on Find My, luckily. And it’s locked to my wife’s AppleID, I can brick it instantly if I really want to. Commenter 2: Since the document was signed they can more easily argue that you allowed them to have it, although it depends on what exactly she signed. Without the document they'd be more likely to budge if you bother them about it. Although naturally it's possible they're nice and will return it early since they can access it easily, but not something that can be relied on. You should get it back eventually. It's just always a risk to have it there, they really don't like taking responsibility for anything. Shouldn't hurt to speak to them at least to hear if they can give you a timeline. Speaking to a lawyer could also be a good idea if it's not beyond your means. OOP: Signed only for them to search it with the provided passcode, not to seize the actual device. If they lose it or refuse to give it back, I will rain hellfire on the police department with any means I can muster. Commenter 3: Find a lawyer. The search warrant is required before entering your residence, not during or after. I'll bet they got the warrant after the fact to cover their ass. If they had a valid search warrant like the one for the lower residence, then there would be no need to ask permission to take anything that is related to the search. If they did not have an executable search warrant prior to entering a lawyer should be able to get your iPad returned immediately. Commenter 4: I'd bet the city didn't know it was a duplex - it sounds like it was once a single-family home and was converted at some point. Definitely talk to a lawyer and Legal Aid may be able to help. OP, you did pretty well on the fly. When they have guns out, follow their directions and live to fight it out later in court, if need be. OOP: It’s been converted for at least a decade, maybe two. Not totally sure. I know how to pick my battles. If this had been ten years ago, when I was young and dumb and not married, this very well may have gone differently lol + They would have seized the iPad regardless. We only gave them permission to search it willingly instead of them passcode cracking it, no choice on the seizing part. OOP on the house they are residing at OOP: I think this house was built in 1910 or something like that, if that makes a difference. I doubt it started out as duplex, but it’s definitely been one for a while OOP on their and their wife's backgrounds OOP: My wife is black. I am a disabled trans person. Unfortunately the bare minimum doesn’t always apply to us. And they literally pulled us out at gun point and were in our apartment before I even got to say “can I help you officer?” Commenter 5: They should have given you a form showing what they took along with case number, detectives name , phone number etc. They Ipad will be kept in evidence. Even if they didn’t give you a form, go to the police station or call and they’ll tell you about how long they need to keep it. DO NOT wait for them to call you, keep calling or showing up because they most likely won’t call you. It’s just going to sit in an evidence locker once “the case” is over or the DA says it’s ok to release it. OOP: We got a warrant that looks like a middle school MS Word document, a copy of the seizure receipt for the iPad, and a copy the thing to look at the iPad. No case number, no phone number, and a cop’s name that is illegible Commenter 6: If the house is separated by legally and registered as a separate address by the governing entity in your area, and you were only provided the warrant specifically outlining your address AFTER they searched your house, then they conducted an illegal search. If you have any timestamped video from a ring cam for instance, be sure to save it, and provide to a lawyer, along with the copy of the warrant. That should be timestamped as well. A half decent lawyer will quickly be able to prove this in court, and not only get your iPad back, but I believe they are on the hook for repairing any damage. OOP: They were in our apartment before they even finished putting my cuffs on. We didn’t see the warrant until we were allowed to go back in after it was all over. I don’t think they even said anything about having one until we were in the car and then later said they were printing us one. We do not have a ring camera unfortunately. Commenter 7: NAL - but a former Minneapolis resident. You may want to reach out to your city council member. They could be really helpful. OOP: Already done! That’s what I did last night when I was still too wired to sleep. From what I’ve heard, ours is pretty cool, so here’s hoping + Damn fuck he already answered me and now we are meeting with him tomorrow. Ngl, I have never had anyone at any level of government get back to me that quick Update: March 26, 2026 (over 9.5 months later) Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/s/uEQvwNc3nl Location: Still Minnesota. Oh boy where to start? If you’re looking for a guide on how to get your shit back from the police, this ain’t gonna be it. Within a week of the iPad being taken I: - spent over 12 collective hours at the courthouse talking to about 20 different people - had a meeting with our city council member - went viral on both Reddit and TikTok - had to take our disabled cat to the ER because she ate something a cop tracked in on their shoe (she’s fine—shoutout U of MN) - called and spoke to everyone from the judge that signed the warrant to the officer who took the iPad to three different records offices - was told by the officer who took the iPad that since I was causing an issue, they were going to keep it longer - requested all the police reports documents. Had to do this multiple times because I kept getting rejected. - emailed about 15 other people - connected with Communities United Against Police Brutality (CUAPB) - got a lawyer - filed case with the Office of Police Conduct Review (OPCR) The week after that, our downstairs neighbors decided this entire event was my fault and started a smear campaign against me online. Then they started texting me about how I was a disrespectful, animal abusing wife beater who uses autism as an excuse to be racist. Good people of r/LegalAdvice, I have no fucking idea how or why or when they came to that conclusion. Anyone who knows me knows that the vibes in our household are very much NOT that. I mean, I am autistic, that much is true. I’m being flippant about it now but it was incredibly stressful while it was occurring. Our neighbor is a really influential person in a specific community that we are a part of so it could have been very bad for us. Luckily the fallout wasn’t terrible. After all that... …literally nothing happened! Still to this day the MPD did not file any of their paperwork about the warrant, nobody replied to our council member or lawyer or CUAPB, nothing. I did get a redacted copy of the police report for them coming to the house. That was it. In August this had to take a back seat because the school year started and I went back to work. Ngl, I also took a break from annoying the cops so much because I was worried they would retaliate. If they opened some sort of case again me or started giving me legal trouble some other way, I would be at risk of losing my license/clearances/etc. that allow me to work with children and thus my entire livelihood. I tried to continue to reach out every month for an update. In January, the OPCR emailed us! A whole six months later! We did an intake interview with a neutral lawyer. Still have heard nothing else. We also got a little bit…sidetracked by everything going on in the city and trying to protect students/neighbors. I think the sound of a whistle will forever be etched into my nervous system. And I had my school breaks eaten up by manuscript deadlines—nothing like doing line and copy editing 10 hours a day for two weeks straight to make your brain melt. In the meantime, my wife used my shitty half-broken Apple Pencil and the shitty half-broken iPad I found in the attic that we both forgot we had. Gen 7 base I think? With 32GB of memory so it was full almost immediately and her quality took a big hit with the resolution drop. That revenue stream dried up a lot unfortunately. We’ll get it back. And then in March, our downstairs neighbors got their stuff returned. Supposedly. After our neighbors got their stuff, I had my wife call the officer who took the iPad, figuring a new voice might be helpful as I’m sure mine is now automatically associated with annoyance. Five days later (today) he calls back. Y’all ain’t ready for this. APPARENTLY, the iPad was released from evidence. In OCTOBER. But they “didn’t have a way to contact” my wife. You know, despite having our address, driver licence numbers, both phone numbers, and a signed evidence receipt. They also “accidently” had my wife’s name badly misspelled, again despite EVERYTHING they had with our names on it. This is also despite me, and the lawyer, and our CM, and CUAPB reaching out to the MPD between October and now. No “hey your shit is ready,” no “we’re done with this garbage,” nothing. It’s not like they are supposed to only hold released evidence for 60 days or anything. So we go to the evidence unit. The officer w/couldn’t even tell my wife the address of the damn place because fuck him. Granted, I already knew where it was, but still bro. I fully prepare my wife for the fact that I am going to sit there until they give it to us or I get dragged out because I am fucking over this. Shockingly, the evidence unit went off without a hitch. iPad in hand, custom engraved Apple Pencil still there, no screen cracks. And they finally gave us the case number! Amazing! Only took 10 months! We get celebratory pizza at Boludo and go home. I unplug the Wi-Fi and boot up the iPad, I don’t want it connected to our network until I make sure it’s not fucking wiretapped or something. Open Screen Time to discover they never even touched the damn thing. What-fucking-ever. 40 minutes of iOS updates and 25 minutes of app updates later and we’re back in business. It’s been real, LegalAdvice. Thanks for coming along for the ride. TL;DR: We have the iPad. description of the image A black-and-white, sketch-style illustration with a playful and expressive tone. On the left side, there is large lettering reading “F*ck the MPD,” written in a swirly calligraphy style with sparkles around it, creating a contrast between the decorative typography and the message. On the right side, there’s an anime-style character of a young lady with short bob haircut, tiny horn-like shapes on head, and facial markings on cheeks. She has expressive eyes and a slightly determined expression. Her outfit has lacy details with a fitted bodice, decorative trim. Her pose shows confidence, one arm is bent as if she’s making a fist. Around her head are small sketchy marks that look like accent lines or stylized motion/emotion cues, adding to her attitude. end of the description Editor's note: OOP did not leave any comments here in the update DO NOT COMMENT IN LINKED POSTS OR MESSAGE OOPs – BoRU Rule #7 THIS IS A REPOST SUB - I AM NOT OOP submitted by /u/Choice_Evidence1983 to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

I think my (27f) husband (41M) will end up in prison if I tell him the truth.
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/throwRAblondie99 Originally posted to r/Advice I think my (27f) husband (41M) will end up in prison if I tell him the truth. Trigger Warnings: rape, abuse, mentions death of a loved one, possible depression, physical assault, alcoholism, past trauma Original Post: March 18, 2026 Editor's note: the original post's body text was saved before it got removed. OOP then reinstalled the same post in comments Hey everyone. This is a slightly dramatic post but it’s something that I can’t talk to anyone in real life about. Me and my husband have been together 8 years, married for 6. We have two beautiful young daughters (6 and 4) and I just feel like everything is going so *perfectly*. I had a pretty rough upbringing (abusive dad, junkie mom, typical Southern white trash shit), and he’s had a hard life. He lost his daughter before we met, and his whole life has been dedicated to a high-intensity job that has meant he’s seen some nasty stuff. He hasn’t discussed it with me directly but he’s heavily implied he’s done some nasty stuff too. He’s “retired” from that now but this is just to explain why I’m scared. I don’t see much of my family for obvious reasons, but just recently my cousin (29f) got married to a guy who grew up around our family that we’ll call Bobby (30m). Attending the wedding and the party afterwards was the first time I’d seen either of them in ages, and it was a beautiful ceremony. I was so happy for them. However as the night went on Bobby started getting a little flirty, talking about how well I’d grown up, and how “petite” (🤢) I was even after having two kids and how motherhood suited me. It creeped me out but I just assumed he’d drunk too much. I wasn’t about to ruin the happiest day of my cousins life, especially when I’ll probably not see her again for another decade. Biggest regret of my adult life. I’d had a bit much to drink myself, and I was disoriented and long story short: when I went out into the garden to fetch some things the kids had left behind, he cornered me and attacked me. I didn’t see it coming at all. I tried everything. Afterwards I was so flustered that I snuck back in the house and tidied myself up and downed a couple more drinks. I found my husband (sulking in the corner because he hates parties) and basically said we should get back to our hotel because of the kids passing out in their cousins bed. He noticed something was up and my dress was a little dirty, but I just passed it off as having drunk too much and fell. He got pissed because historically I’ve had an alcohol problem, but he eventually softened and I just prayed that was the end of it. However about a week after he’s asked me again what happened. I tried to tell the same story but idk if I was convincing enough. As well today he’s been going on about me seeming different and I will admit that I’m not being as voracious as I normally would be (I am extremely attracted to him and I have a high drive). I just can’t… feel connected right now. I still feel dirty and I know I’m keeping something from him. He keeps trying to insist he just cares. But man he’s so smart and he has a natural inclination for investigation. I’m terrified he thinks I fucked up and consensually cheated on him. I’m maybe paranoid but he seem suspicious and he knows me better than anyone. But I just can’t tell him. He has been through so much. He also knows I’ve been hurt like this historically and from how he’s dealt with finding out about that I KNOW he’ll k*** the guy. He’ll figure out who it was because he made a couple funny comments about the guy anyway. And watching him hold our youngest daughter I’m just terrified my babies will lose their dad. He is genuinely all I have in this world, him and our kids, and I can’t. But also I can’t be normal with him at the minute. AIO? Should I just tell him? Or am I right that it’s better to have a little mistrust now than to risk him actually taking drastic action toward someone? Editor's note: OOP has made lots of comments, I am listing the common background questions asked and responses Relevant Comments Commenter 1: I totally understand but he’s in your corner. Have to trust him and tell him. I know the type he is trust me but you will never be the same holding this in. Tell him then call the cops and report it before he does get a hold of the guy. OOP: I feel like I’m in a real tough situation because I’ve left it a week or two. I’m nervous about telling the police because I know better than anyone that they hardly ever do anything. However, with a slightly clearer mind it does have me thinking about my cousin and who she’s married to and I do want to see him face some kind of justice. Commenter 2: Please step back for a second and think about this: Your cousin married a deeply unsafe man. What happened to you was fucking awful, and honestly I don’t blame you for being tempted to keep it hidden and pretend it never happened. I am so sorry for everything you went through, and are still going through. But regardless of what he did to YOU, he assaulted someone on his own wedding night. He’s dangerous. If he hasn’t done this to your cousin already, there’s a possibility he may. If he hasn’t done this to other women already, he absolutely will. And if your cousin and him have a child together, I would not EVER trust this man to raise that child safely. With all his comments about how “petite” you were, I don’t think this man should ever have a daughter. Please say something. I really think it’s the right decision. Your husband will be enraged for a good reason, though I hope you’re able to get across how your priority is making sure your kids still have their dad. But please know that there is basically a 0% chance what Bobby did to you is an isolated event. Even if you can’t bring yourself to say something to your husband, at the very LEAST, for your cousin’s sake and her children’s sake if she wants to have any, please please tell her what her new husband did to you. She deserves to know, and everyone deserves to be safe from that horrible predator. OOP: Thank you. This is actually a wakeup call I needed I think. I’ve been so in my head about my (occasionally precarious) marriage and my children that I’ve not had much time to consider other implications. I feel so much disgust at what he did and I do not want him to walk unpunished while I live with it. I just can’t get out of my own head/blaming myself for how it happened/might happen next. Commenter 3: It sounds obvious from your description that he raped you. Do you have any of the clothing that you were wearing, unwashed? It will have some of his DNA on it. I think you need to report this to the police first but you absolutely cannot keep this secret from your husband. Maybe take him to the police station when you go. That might help keep him calm. But yes, he will be outraged. And you absolutely have to tell him. What a sleaze bag who married your cousin! Wow! OOP: I have the dress, but it’s been in with other laundry? I want to. I just don’t know if I can face the process if I don’t know I’ll get a conviction. I’ve been through it once before and reliving it over and over was almost more traumatising than the actual experience. I do want to protect other women though, please don’t misconstrue this. Commenter 4: DO NOT WASH IT. Go get it immediately and put it in a plastic bag. Your undies and bra you were wearing in the same bag. Bag up any clothing it was touching jn a separate bag. There will still be evidence there. Anything else he may have touched? Jacket? Socks, shoes, something you were holding? Where did it happen? They may be able to lift prints. Any bruising? Get a rape kit done anyway. There may be some trauma or residuals they can collect as evidence. Have you written anything down that corroborated rhe timeline? Do you have your timeline on your phone switched to on and was it with you? What about health tracking on your phone or watch? They can use all this and get statements from people who were there to fill in gaps. Go to the police, make a report, and tell them tou want to press charges. Do not take no for an answer. Write down everything you can remember with times and anyone that would have seen you with dirt on you, or that noticed you acting funny. I have found AI to be really useful for doing self-investigation and documentation. I have found Claude to have the best algorithm. I had a contract dispute last year and used that method... I went from thinking I had no case to blowing it out of the water pretty quickly. Reach out if you need help figuring out where to start. OOP: Thank you, this is insanely useful advice. I know my husband would be able to help in this regard if I would just ask him and he would be furious that I’ve not better tried to preserve evidence. Commenter 5: Talk to a therapist first. You need to make the right decision for you. Regardless what you decide you need to be strong for yourself. Wishing you peace and healing. OOP: Thank you! I actually do have a therapist on rotation because of another mental health condition so I think I will have to get back in contact with her Commenter 6: I'm sorry that happened. I'm not trying to pry, and not trying to shame you, but seems like you should tell your husband, and handle the situation appropriately. I don't know why you wouldn't, unless you aren't saying everything about the incident, with you being tipsy, is what you're speaking of exactly what happened? I am sorry for what happened. If he raped you, go see your doctor for some blood work, to make sure you're okay. There is no shame in seeing a therapist either, that kind of thing is traumatic. Best wishes 🙂. OOP: Because I don’t trust the police to handle it, but I know what my husband is capable of. I was the victim of some horrific crimes as a child and perhaps this has left me slightly jaded and not able to see through the right lenses. I’m going to get tested at the very least. Commenter 7: Best advice I can offer is did the venue have cameras on site? I’d initially do a report and take dress in bag to police station. This individual has to be reported ASAP because not only is he a community danger. He’s a danger to your immediate family. Obtaining a therapist would be ideal and perhaps with council the news can be broken delicately to your spouse. OOP: It was my Aunt’s property however while I don’t believe there were camera’s that far down the garden there are some by the house which actually might help establish that we were both outside at the same time. Thank you. OOP explains more on her own background, why she went to the wedding, just to see the family OOP: I actually describe my own upbringing as white trash. My husband makes a comfortable salary so I’ve been able to come away from that, but I don’t cast judgement on my relatives. I don’t see “much” of my family because my mom and dad were abusive, and I moved away from that. However my cousins and my Aunts are all very important to me. Of course I was there. Not that I have to justify this to you. In my immediate life I rely on my husband. As a teen (14-20) I got into some bad stuff and I was just not in a great place. Me and him drank a lot together but I was recovering by the time I had our first daughter. I don’t elect to go completely alcohol free, I choose moderation. I made a slight mistake in judgement but I wasn’t PLASTERED. Who would I tell? And no, I didn’t immediately contact the police. I was thrown. I can see why it’s the wrong thing to do. Anyway, I don’t really need to justify all this but if anyone else comes across this: there it is. I hate to break it to you, but people are imperfect, especially people who have led complex lives. I’m not the perfect victim. Update: March 20, 2026 (two days later) UPDATE: I think my (27f) husband (41M) will end up in prison if I tell him the truth. Hello everyone. First of all: wow. Just wow. I didn’t expect that post to get the attention it did, and I naively didn’t expect some of the bad reactions it got either. However I’m very thankful for the abundance of brilliant advice, helplines, and experiences that were shared with me. A lot of people won’t have grown up in the way I did so I can understand why it might seem odd to you. But thank you for the support. Anyway, onto the update… this is very raw and very intimate in a way that I don’t think everything needs to be shared so I’ll just give you the cliff notes. I decided pretty quickly I needed to tell him but I was not sure about when and how and whether I should “take him on a drive to the police station” as some commenters suggested, which I did think would ultimately piss him off more. But in the end the decision was made for me. Maybe I seemed extra troubled because in bed he pulled a stunt I didn’t respond well to, and then he just sighed, put some distance between us and laid it all out. Said I’d been different, and that he’s not a fucking idiot and he’s not mad but he needs to know. Naturally I hesitated, but I just burst out crying and told him. And then he sat there for a second contemplating, and asked if it was at the wedding. So I nodded. And then when he realised that I hadn’t slipped over and that he had actually been there, he just fucking lost it crying himself (which is something I have never seen before). He asked who it was, and I initially said that I’m scared to tell him because the reason I initially hesitated was because I thought he’d kill the guy. He responded that the guy deserved it. At this point I just tried to talk him down. I ended up telling him, and then I said I think I should go to the police. His stance was that we’ll talk through our options tomorrow because, in his words, “they [the police, my family] will be very hard on you”. Which I know, obviously, but my firm stance is that I want him to face justice of some kind. He nodded but he was hard to read. He also asked me if I still wanted to continue trying for another baby and I said that I want everything with him but I couldn’t possibly know right now. You guys will be happy to know I pleaded with him not to do anything crazy, and (reluctantly) told him that I’d made this post to which he was a little pissed about but ultimately understood. He was mainly angry at himself, which is just eating me up. He’s went to work like normal today but I can tell he’s still quite distressed. Even our poor daughters can tell. I’m gonna take some time today to figure it out, I’m contacting my lovely therapist first of all and then we’re gonna try and speak to my husband’s cop friend about some stuff later, but my main thing is that I want it all to be formal and it to be on the record just in case. This is probably not quite as dramatic as you thought an update of this kind will be but this is mostly what I have right now. It’s hard to read what he’s thinking at the minute, and I’m scared I’ve really hurt our marriage, but at the minute I think his position is that because he could tell something was wrong and that I “withdrew” rather than overcompensating he believes I was hurt, and he’s not mad. Let’s pray we get over this. Thank you lovelies. If I have more news I will update. If you have any questions obviously do ask but I feel like that’s all for now. I appreciate the support so much, you’ve given me the courage I needed. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: I’m so glad you told your husband! Talking to his friend that is a cop is a great idea! OOP: Yeah, I thought so too. It’s a little easier to talk it out without someone you know a bit better and I’ve known him almost as long as I’ve known my husband. Commenter 2: Wow! I am so incredibly sorry you gad to go through that! Your husband sounds like a wonderful man, and I am proud of him for responding appropriately. Please take care of yourself! You deserve so much better than this life has handed you and you sound like a wonderful wife and mother. This cloud should not weigh on you. If there is any way in the world you can see a therapist who works with EMDR techniques, it is a way of counseling that helps you alleviate the painful aftermath from traumatic events at a much higher rate of success because of the way the brain is able to rapidly process the events. It is quite incredible and I am not doing it justice, but it helps everyone become a healthier version of themselves. OOP: I’ve heard of EMDR! Thank you very much for the suggestion. Hope you have a good day. Commenter 3: Please also go to the hospital and get a std test. I’m so sorry this happened to you OOP: First on the list. He wants to come with me though and support me which I appreciate. I told the mistress that she got the leftovers and she’s not happy about that
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/Long-Debt-6765 Originally posted to r/TrueOffMyChest I told the mistress that she got the leftovers and she’s not happy about that Thanks to u/queenlegolas for suggesting this BoRU Trigger Warnings: infidelity, harassment, manipulation ---- Original Post: February 26, 2026 Been married to my husband for 15 years. I have a great life and I love everything about it. He has a great career and I feel very spoiled. I only have to work with what I love and it is that I design jewelry and the profit would never give me the life I am living. I have not paid bills in years and I spend my days in my studio, working out or having fun with my friends. Our families are very close and we have a big social circle that I love very much. He is great. He cooks and cleans with me and I never feel like I do more than him. He makes my my favorite food every Friday and he would drive at 3 am at night if I was feeling down and wanted a burger or candy.. I want to believe that I do the same with him other than that I cannot drive☺️. Cheating on me was a mystery to me. I was in shock for a long while but I couldn’t tell anyone because I didn’t want my life to crumble. Then I got used to it. I let go of the love and just kept the friendship and companionship. I want my house my travels and my family and friends. Everything I have thanks to him. I got her hey girlie last month and I didn’t even open it. It was on instagram but I didn’t accept her invitation to speak so she reached out on TikTok instead and later I found a request on facebook messenger too. Then I don’t know how but she got my number and called me. I answered because I thought it was a buyer and she cornered me. I froze and she calmly told me to see what she left on instagram and TikTok. I hang up in panic. So I opened her hi girlie text. I couldn’t help but be confused. She pretended that she didn’t know I existed when I seen all her texts about me. Haven’t seen me when I know she has. I didn’t read all of it but I wrote her that I knew about the affair and that she could stop lying because I knew for a fact that she knew he was married and to whom. She became very hostile very fast and told me if I was better… maybe he bla bla bla…. You know the rest. I told her that she could have my left overs. The parts of him that I don’t want and according to her “neglected”. I told her she could have his body and even his heart. I have the other more important things. I have 1/2 of everything else at least so the leftovers are truly hers. Congrats!. She went berserk with insults and I blocked her. I have been crying since. What does people like her want when they contact the partner of their affair? I am not looking for leave him advice. I love my life and his love and sex don’t matter to me anymor anyway Excuse my very bad grammar. I will try to edit and correct when I find errors but I don’t really write a lot in English in mynlife Editor's note: OOP has made lots of responses, I am listing the top common questions asked and responses Relevant Comments Commenter 1: He's told her he'll never leave you, is my guess, so she's trying to get you to do it? OOP: He can leave for someone who’s worth 1/2 of everything. Commenter 2: She needs to "win". She lost love and affection from a man (probably her father) to someone else and now she's trying to feel like she's finally won over someone else. Your husband probably told her he'd never leave you so she is trying to get you to leave him. Unfortunately you probably can't keep pretending that you don't know. She's going to say or do something crazy, maybe accuse you of attacking or threatening her. If you want your life to stay the same your going to need to tell him to put his 🐕 on a shorter leash OOP: So far he hasn’t said anything so I guess she hasn’t told him yet Commenter 3: My best bet is she was looking to inform you of the affair in the hopes that would accelerate a divorce. I know you're happy with your life, but you need to get your ducks in a row in the event he decides to leave you. If you think this affair is more than just sex and it's actual love, he may be thinking about it, using the old "i will leave my wife eventually, just not now". Get yourself as much proof of the affair as you can and consult a lawyer to be prepared. Also, talk to your husband and tell him that under no circumstance you want her to try reach you again, have him deal with the crazy. I wish you all the luck, babe. OOP: Well it must be more than just sex or he would have slept with many others. He is very hot and I don’t think he would have problems with just sex from many Commenter 4: She was hoping you'd leave him so she could have your life. What are the chances she tells him that you know? OOP: I don’t know so far he seems oblivious to my unoblivion **Commenter 5: Are they still together? Don’t be surprised if she tries to baby trap him OOP: I wasn’t planning to divulge my whole private life but he got a vasectomy after a terrible experience we had about 5 years ago Commenter 6: She thought she was going to force his hand, he’s probably been promising to leave you - so she thought she’d blow it all up and finally get him to herself and she’s berserk knowing that he will just trade her in for someone more discreet. OOP: I understand if he left. I was his first so I understand if he wants another last How long has OOP known about the affair? **OOP: Puffffff 8 months probably. OOP on if her husband had affairs with just one woman or were there more? Any changes in his behavior toward OOP? OOP: One woman. Oh it was his behavior that was the first warning that something was terribly off. He became silent and had that 1000 yard stare. You notice it especially when you are very close and open with each other but it was his smile and not meeting my eyes that did it. I started having nightmares by then and one day he said he was staying the night out. He never did that our entire relationship since he always longed to come home that it was a running joke that he went crazy if he stayed away for a couple more hours at work. Before all this, when he had to work late fou a few days he would talk about it and about wanting the weekend to be just us because he hated being away and not ”seeing me enough” that week. He came home in the middle of the night and he was a total mess and very emotional and told me he never wanted to stay away from me again. I remember crying and so did he. It took me a couple of more times over the following months to sneak out to the laundry room after he spent a night away and came in the early morning when I was sleeping. He usually unpacks his bags himself and do a wash but I managed to sneak into the laundry room and see his bag before he could do it and I found the condoms. I knew then my feelings were right. Then I saw a texts. Then the nights out became something that just happened and his smile went back to normal and he could look at me again. Commenter 7: Look, I'm not trying to be contrary or argumentative... But you yourself said you have cried over this... And if you were truly 100% OK with this, you probably wouldn't be posting about it on reddit...I was in your shoes once a very long time ago. I thought it would be okay once the affair ended. Well, many years later, I realized that I had been kidding myself and ended the marriage. Sure, things were difficult, sure, there were some financial and practical implications, but let me tell you, I am happier now than I ever could have imagined I could be. Since I have been where you are, I would sure hate for you to look back one day with regret, that's all. Everyone is different and everyone has different feelings about things, but I do know that those feelings can possibly change. I wish you all the best! OOP: I never pretended I was okay just that I mourned the loss and got used to my new life and found it to be happy if yet a different kind of happy OOP on why she has not learned how to drive OOP: My older brother died in a car accident when I was little. I couldn’t… Does OOP have children with her husband? OOP: No, we are childfree Does OOP have a job that she can support herself? OOP: I am a math teacher. I can go back to work and live a normal life if anything happened to him OOP on if she has a prenup set up OOP: No we have no prenup :). Update: March 4, 2026 (six days later) Update: I told the mistress that she could have my left overs So, I was here a few days ago to talk about my husband’s mistress, this is an update from that post but I will not be speaking about the mistress here because my story with her is over. She has told him about me knowing. Not sure when she told him but he’s been hovering around me this week like he wanted to say something and this morning he did, which was was odd because he usually doesn’t have a lot of time in the morning for a serious discussion but maybe this was the plan? Just to get it over with. He just came to the kitchen and told me that ”you need to know that it’s over with her. It’s been over since new years. I ended it” I looked at him and he couldn’t meet my eyes. I said okay but next time tell them to never bother me again. He said there won’t be a next time. He loved me and he was so so sorry. He made his way for a hug or something but I guess my look was good enough warning not to come near me. Not sure why his apology and love declaration made me more angry than anything else I’ve felt since I found out. I wanted to yell and scream and hit him but I stayed frozen in my chair. How fucking dare he apologize or pretend to love me? I said yes you will and next woman/women is not allowed to contact me. That’s all that matters. It wasn’t a debate, it was a fact that I was stating. Then when he’s hovered enough time I asked him why he ended it. He said because he realized I knew. I asked him why he didn’t tell me until she told him I knew and he said because he is a coward and thought that he was sparing me the pain but that he realized I knew and ended the affair which led her to contact me. I gave him my phone so he could see all the screenshots I taken of her trying to contact me for the past month or so. I asked him if he loved her and he said no. I told him not to lie because I seen the texts, he said maybe at first because it was something new and he got feelings mixed up with excitement but he realized very quickly that it wasn’t love. I said and like me you don’t want to lose 1/2 of this. He said that wasn’t why he loved me or wanted me, and I said well, that’s my only reason. Then before he left he asked me if I will ever forgive him. I said no. It was final. I told him that even if I could forgive the physical affair once the images of them together that I see whenever I closed my eyes start to fade a ay but I will never forgive that he destroyed the man I thought I had. He made me realize that man only ever existed in my head and I will never forgive him for that. He left to go to work and left me totally drained in my kitchen. Then a few hours later my mother in law showed up and I could finally cry. He had told her and and his dad what he’d done and she wanted to check on me. She suggested therapy and said that he wanted to try it. Honestly I don’t mind it and I think I do need one on my own too. I also need a refuge or sanctuary, a place I can spend some time away from him a few days a week or maybe a week every month and he can use that time too however he wants, away from me without making excuses about how busy he is this night. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: Sounds like you handled the talk pretty well. Hope time and therapy will help you figure out how you'd like to go forward. Good luck! OOP: Thank you. I am actually very interested in therapy and talking to someone who doesn’t know us. Commenter 2: Tell him to move out so can have that space from him. Unless you need to get away from your place. Can’t imagine what you are going through. OOP: Yes I can ask him to find an apartment in the city and leave me in my home. That’s a great idea Commenter 3: So basically he’s in it for the thrill and once you find out about the relationship it’s no longer thrilling and exciting so he dumps them. OOP: Is that a thing? That would explain it. No the way he explained it is that he woke up to what he was doing and felt disgusted with himself Commenter 4: His mother/your mother in law is suggesting therapy just to protect her son, his money, and his assets; don’t fall for it OOP: Not really, she told me to leave him or at least she thought I was leaving. OOP on getting a postnup OOP: Why would I want a postnup when we don’t have a prenup? + I don’t know what the purpose of postnup is when I am entitled to half Commenter 5: A postnup could say, given you full ownership of the house and set alimony for x amount of years in addition to half of everything else. It really just depends, think of it as additional layers of protection OOP: Okay that sounds like a good plan. I will investigate that Commenter 6: How is it going? How is your relation with your husband? Is he trying to talk/ communicate with you? What is he trying to say? Are you sleepingnext to each other or seperated? His parents? I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/Expert-Sample6563 Originally posted to r/AITAH AITAH for telling my wife that her shitty attitude was the reason her brother doesn’t speak to her anymore. Editor's note: added paragraph breaks and changed letters to names for ease of readability Trigger Warnings: racism, emotional manipulation, depression, obsessive behavior, stalking, accusations of abuse ---- Original Post: February 11, 2026 First of this is a throw-away account as I don't want my wife to find out I posted this. So this goes all the way back to last Christmas, when my (29M) wife (29F) and I first met my brother-in-law's (28M) girlfriend (23F). Now, just for general background knowledge, my wife has 5 siblings and out of all she has always been the closest to "Peter" meaning he would come over to our house at least 2x a week. He has a spare set of keys to our place in case of an emergency, and we even had an emergency key to his apartment. Everything was fine until last October, when we noticed that "Peter" stopped coming over. At first, I didn’t really care that much but then my wife said that he hardly even replied to her texts, which was concerning since "Peter" has a history of depression and sometimes withdraws from everyone when he hits a dark place. So one night after my wife got his voice mail 4 times and after my in law's confirmed that they too did not hear back from him, out of concern we drove to his apartment and used the emergency key. Usually, when "Peter" gets like this, his apartment looks a mess but to our surprise, when we walked inside, his place was spotless and smelled like a bath and bodyworks store. When my wife realized that he wasn't home she took the opportunity to snoop and that's when she found silk sheets, high end women's clothing, skincare, new appliances and meal preps in the fridge and realized that "Peter" had a girlfriend. As soon as we got home, my wife sent him a message telling him that we stopped by, and she even asked why didn’t he tell us he was seeing someone. Eventually "Peter" called back and apologized for being so distant and explained to my wife that he had been dating this girl "Sheila" for a while and the reason he didn’t tell us was because my wife is often too pushy and he didn't want her to be upset that he was dating someone she didn't put him on to (my wife has tried to set him up with her friends several times in the past). He also told us not to worry if he doesn’t stop by as much anymore and that he would introduce us to her when he felt ready. After that, we hardly ever heard from him until December when he told us that he was bringing his girlfriend "Sheila" to meet the family the day after Christmas. Honestly, I was happy for him. Yes, I missed hanging out but I was happy that the dude was living his own life. My wife, however, was furious saying that "Sheila" was probably the one making "Peter" distance himself from the family and that she made him buy all those expensive items we had seen at his place. When the day after Christmas came everyone gathered at my in-law's house to meet “Sheila” and everyone including myself were a bit surprised. “Sheila” was nowhere near his usual type. As my sister-in-law said she “gave off black cat energy” lol. I honestly thought that she was pretty nice, friendly to everyone, helped in the kitchen, cracked a few jokes and “Peter” seemed happy he was telling everyone about how he has been eating less processed junk and now craves cleaner meals and how “Sheila” takes him on her runs. Throughout it all however my wife looked noticeably annoyed and when I tried to speak to her she just brushed me off by saying that “Sheila” was trying to change “Peter” into someone he was not but despite everything she held her tongue. That night while my wife and I were having drinks with all her siblings the conversation steered towards everyone making a few jokes about “Peter’s” new lifestyle and how he must be whipped for his new girlfriend and how surprised they were that his type changed so much. It was all lighthearted until my wife offered “Peter” a second beer and he declined saying that he tries to drink less now because “Sheila” hates the smell of it. That led to my sister-in-law cracking a joke saying something along the lines of he better refuse the beer or else he wouldn’t get lucky that night. At that point I think “Peter” just had enough of the jokes and drank another beer just to quiet the others down. By 1am “Peter” had gotten pretty tipsy - 2 beers had turned into 5 and then he took the bait of the others jokes by revealing that “Sheila” actually wants to wait a while before they do anything together and immediately after he said that my wife told him “with the amount of sh*t you bought because of her you should be cracking that by now”- now if she had just left it there maybe he wouldn’t have gotten angry but she followed up with her being surprised because “Sheila” looks as if she gives it up pretty easily. . After that shit went down and “Peter” hasn’t spoken to my wife since December. No matter how many times I have tried to reason with her and tell her that all she needs to do is apologize she won’t hear it. She keeps insisting that she was the only one who cared enough to tell him the truth. Now she has been trying to turn her parents against “Peter’s” relationship by telling them that how “Sheila” posts designer bags and shoes on her Instagram and that she bets “Peter” is the one paying for it all. Last night I tried to tell her to stop saying things like that and that she should be happy for her brother but that escalated into an argument where she made a shitty remark about how I apparently don’t know what an older sibling looking out for their younger sibling looks like because my parents were too busy cheating on one another to make me a brother or sister. At that point after hearing that I couldn’t help myself and I told her that her nasty ass attitude was the reason “Peter” cut her off which made her cry AITAH for finally reaching the end of the rope and telling my wife the ugly truth? AITAH has no consensus bot, OOP received the majority of NTAs Editor's note: OOP did not leave any relevant comments in this original post Top Comments Commenter 1: So she called the woman a good digger, promiscuous tramp, and a controlling abuser. Gotcha. And she thinks she’s in the right. Got it. And now Peter won’t talk to her anymore because she was - checks notes - wrong, mean and incredibly gratuitously nasty about his girlfriend. All this because he doesn’t live like a slovenly bachelor, doesn’t drink as much, likes to eat healthier because he feels better when he does, and has taken up occasional running when he’s up for it. Your wife is a gaping asshole. She deserves this radio silence and a right up to the gates come to Jesus moment from Peter. But to answer your question, no you’re nta, she needed to hear it, she sounds like a honey badger in a fight she started “you wouldn’t know what happy family ties are because parents your parents were too busy cheating on each other”?!? Seriously? What are her good qualities my man? And how often do you have to remind yourself of them? Commenter 2: NTA. Your wife sounds pretty judgmental and controlling. She apparently likes to find a scab and rip it off. Not a good character trait. She needs to get it under control. Commenter 3: NTA Absolutely NTA. I'm wondering about your in-laws' family dynamic, teasing a family member with a history of depression because he's living a happier, healthier life? Pressuring him into binge drinking? Who does that to a person they love? Hell, who does that to anyone? Another thought is that your wife seems to not have any respect for boundaries; she doesn't seem to show much respect for her sibling, her sibling's partner, or you for that matter; she seems unaware of the effect her behaviour has on others; and she doesn't sound very nice. If you have or are thinking of having children with her in the future, you are getting a glimpse of how she's going to treat them and their future partners, ie, this is why your son/daughter is going to cut you both off in 30-someodd years and why you won't meet your grandchildren. I'm not saying this to be mean, I'm saying this because unless something huge changes, if you have kids with someone who acts like this those kids are going to bail when she blasts their partners and you'll lose them. If you don't plan on having kids then this is a much smaller problem. You might want to look into couple's counselling with the ultimate goal being helping her unravel why she acts this way and correcting it. She might never get her brother back, but it hopefully some good will come of it. Small Update: February 12, 2026 (next day) Editor's note: OOP installed the same small update into the original post Small Update -12/02/2026: Hey everyone, I honestly didn’t expect to get this much feedback under my post but I just want to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who offered advice. Now this isn’t an official update, but this is how things have progressed up until this point. After waking up this morning, reading your comments and doing some quiet assessment of the entire situation I decided to reach out to “Peter” not on behalf of my wife not to make excuses for her behavior, but to genuinely check in and make sure that he was truly doing okay and to let him know that despite it all if he ever wanted to talk I am here. It took a bit of convincing, but I will be meeting with him tomorrow during my lunch break. Moving onto how things are currently between my wife and I. Since that argument she has been very frosty despite the fact that I have tried to apologize to her all day long. Before she left for work, I told her that I was sorry for the way I phrased my words and that I would like it if we could sit down, think about the situation rationally, and look at each other's perspectives to gain a better understanding. I told her that I really didn’t want Valentine’s Day to come with us still at odds with one another. That however just led to another argument apparently to her it seems as if I am playing devil’s advocate for “Sheila”. I tried to explain to her that I am just being honest in my opinion based on that one meeting. I don't think that “Sheila” is a gold digger or even trying to change who “Peter” truly is. I told my wife that “Peter” is just doing what a lot of guys do when they find someone they truly connect to, they make changes to better themselves for the person they care about. But I guess I was just lighting the match for the fire as my wife responded by saying that apparently, I am only giving a good assessment because I find “Sheila” attractive. I reassured my wife that she is the only woman I find attractive but by that point she just scoffed and left for work. This evening after she got back home from work, she said that she had a late lunch with her friends and wasn’t in the mood for dinner. When I tried to bring up our earlier discussion she told me that she now knows that I would never take her side or trust her instincts. After that she said that she couldn’t believe I don’t see why she is so concerned for “Peter” and went to bed. So yeah that’s the way things are for now. Most likely I will update after I catch up with “Peter” tomorrow. Once again thank you to everyone for your insight Editor's note: OOP did not leave any relevant comments in this small update Top Comments Commenter 1: I’d be very concerned about what your wife said to you. Either her trust in you is gone, or she’s willing to say that to you in the heat of the moment. To hurt you, to convince you that you’re wrong? I can’t think of a reason that isn’t concerning. It’s a problem that she’s so fixated on this. It’s a problem that she can’t accept you having a different opinion. It’s a problem that she treats another person like she treats her brother’s girlfriend without some strong justification. It’s a problem how she treats you. It’s a problem that she is avoiding any resolution. Commenter 2: Honestly your wife sounds nasty. Is she always this degrading of other women? It's showing huge insecurity, which is wild cause this is her brother?? Update #2: February 17, 2026 (five days later from the first update) Update: AITAH for telling my wife that her shitty attitude was the reason her brother doesn’t speak to her anymore. Hey guys it’s been a while. Honestly, I wish I had a happier update to give, but it seems like every time I try to take one step forward, I just end up taking three back. My lunch with “Peter” went great, actually. There was no fuss or stress. At first we talked about work, the family, and then we gradually shifted the conversation to how things lay with him and my wife. “Peter” said that my wife was way out of line in suggesting that his girlfriend was a gold digger and if she and the rest of their siblings had let him get a proper sentence out during their conversation during the holiday period, he would have set them straight and told them that “Sheila” has her own money and buys basically whatever she wants. Apparently, he said that “Sheila” even owns a small business back in her home country and earns a decent living for herself here. He admitted that, yes, he buys her gifts, as all boyfriends do for their girlfriends, but those gifts aren’t the reason she is with him. “Peter” said that he and “Sheila” truly enjoy one another's company. He said that, yeah, he went out and bought new stuff like an air fryer for his apartment, but that was because he genuinely wanted those items. He said that “Sheila” has been teaching him how to cook simple stuff in the crockpot he bought, so that he won’t turn to DoorDash when she isn’t there to make meals. I learned that “Sheila” has her own appliances in her apartment. What came as a surprise to me, though, was the fact that “Peter” told me he asked “Sheila” to move in with him, but she declined his offer. He said that her reason was that she doesn’t believe in living together before marriage, and she also thinks that it is way too soon, and she doesn’t want him to feel suffocated. It’s shocking because they have been dating for like 9 months (I think?) and to me personally, that seems too soon to ask, but hey, to each their own, they are both adults. Out of care and because I read a few comments suggesting that “Sheila” could possibly be manipulating “Peter” by withholding sex, I casually mentioned to him that if he ever wants to talk about anything, be it ribs or relationship trouble, I am here. I also just kind of told him that it was good that he and she were waiting a bit and getting to know one another on a serious level before doing anything together. “Peter” said that they wanted to wait because apparently “Sheila” doesn’t have much experience in that department, and after hearing that, I just wrote off the entire conversation because, honestly, as long as he isn’t in trouble or being manipulated, I am good; they could wait for 5 years as long as they are happy. Out of care, I also asked “Peter” if “Sheila” has made changes as well since their relationship began, and he said that her diet has changed a bit now because of him. He said that once every 2 or 3 weeks (I think?) He takes her to one of his favorite take out places, and they get his old go to order. He said that she watches videos and stuff about fish because she knows he has an interest in fish tanks etc. During the course of the conversation I learnt that before “Peter” blocked my wife she would send him unhinged messages just raging about how wrong “Sheila” was for him and how she was “driving him away from the family so he can be isolated” (He laughed after I read that message because he said that “Sheila” has actually been trying to ensure that “Peter” feels like he has a support system outside of her. He said that she cooked a whole spread for him and his friends so they could watch during the Super Bowl. She even left after cooking, even though they insisted she stay and watch with them, just so he could spend some time alone with his friends). The messages didn’t stop at that, my wife had even told him that “Sheila” was probably just using “Peter” for citizenship and that she wanted to escape her “third world country home” (Peter said that was the message that solidified his decision to block my wife. All of her messages were completely unfounded, he said that “Sheila” has been a citizen for a few years now and that she actually has a pretty good house back in her home country). Peter said that Sheila has actually been more open to forgiving my wife than him, that she is very family oriented and hates the idea that others think she is trying to isolate him. Moving on to the current status of my marriage. My wife has no idea that I met with “Peter” on Friday. I would have told her but when I got home that evening she was in a pissy mood because apparently one of her friends said something insensitive. Dinner Friday night was a little less charged I tried to stay clear from talking about “Peter” or “Sheila” but the messages she sent “Peter” about his girlfriend’s home country still lingered in my mind because yes I know my wife can be negative at times and downright mean when her temper flies but the way how she phrased her sentences was downright disgusting like some sort of MAGA asshole (It struck a particular nerve because my own mother married left her home country and married for citizenship. My wife is aware of this fact, and she is also aware that I respect all the choices my mother made as it took extreme bravery to come to the US with nothing in your name but some savings). Saturday came around, and that was when shit hit the fucking wall. We weren’t the best, but things were somewhat calm when my wife decided to rant about the entire situation with “Peter” again. I tried my very best to shut it down by saying that yes, I know it still bothers her, and I want to try and see how she can try and rebuild her relationship with her brother, but not on Valentines day. For a minute or two, she was quiet. I thought that she agreed and that she wanted us to have a nice day, but turns out the only reason she was quiet was because she was looking at “Sheila’s” Instagram. I tried to shift her attention away. I asked if she was excited to see where I was taking her. I asked if she wanted to get dessert at the restaurant or at home. She just brushed me off until I finally had enough and told her to stop being weird and that most people don’t spend hours obsessing over their brother’s girlfriend. She shot back by saying I don’t care about her or her family and that I am apparently “allowing” her brother to get taken advantage of just because a pretty woman happens to be doing it. I took a breath, and I told her calmly that I do care about “Peter,” but I trust him and his ability to think for himself, and that there is a simple way for her to quell her worries; all she has to do is apologize to her brother and ask for the chance to get to know his partner. She said that she doesn’t need to get to know “Sheila” because she apparently knows girls like “Sheila” who survive off of and I quote “nuts and shitty low carb food”. I just gave up and told her that she would drive herself mad. We did go out for Valentine’s, but the vibe just was not there. This evening when she gets home I am going to ask her to attend couples counseling with me, or if she prefers, individual therapy, because this is becoming too much. I hope that my next update is better. Thanks for all the advice again. Editor's note: Update #2's body text was also installed onto another sub due to the original sub's update rules Relevant Comments Commenter 1: I read / commented on your first post. And now with this update I will reiterate… Why are you with someone who sounds so awful? Your wife is a bitter, shallow and likely racist AH. Divorce the wife and befriend the bil and his gf. They sound like much better company to keep. OOP: Hey I know that this sounds like a pretty shitty excuse, but my wife and I have been together since we were 22. We got married when we were 25. She has carried me through some dark times, especially the death of my parents. From the get-go I knew that she had a pretty close relationship with her siblings, but I didn't envision this. Back when we fell in love she wasn't so angry, her words weren't so bitter, she generally wasn't such a hateful person. Sure she and "Peter" have always been close, but I have never genuinely seen her act this way towards one of his girlfriends before and I am just dumbfounded. I guess the main thing keeping me here is the hope that she returns to the fun loving easy going person she used to be Commenter 2: Has your wife always been racist or is this a new thing? NTA. OOP: I swear this has to be a new thing. We have been together for 5+ years and during all that time, I have never heard her make a single racially charged remark. Sure in the past she made shitty comments about my family but nothing racist. Is OOP's family the same race as Sheila? AITA for asking guests to my house to remove their shoes?
So I'm my house I prefer shoes not to be worn. I keep my carpets clean and outdoor shoes are dirty. I make sure everyone knows in advance, so its not a surprise. I also have brand new 'hotel slippers' for people to use I'd they want. Recent I was having a gathering at my house but one of the women refused to take her shoes off. She said she didn't think I was being serious when I told her before hand that she'd have to take them off. She got really annoyed and wouldn't come in and she stormed off. My wife cannot get over the fact that my ex-wife is marrying a millionaire.
This is a repost sub. I’m not the Original OP (OOP) OOP: u/EquipmentTurbulent67 Published on: r/Marriage Story is: CONCLUDED Story timeline Main Post: July 23, 2023 Final Update: July 25, 2023 Main Post July 23, 2023 My wife cannot get over the fact that my ex-wife is marrying a millionaire. Throwaway I don’t know what gotten into my wife. When we met I was still married to my ex-wife. I’m not proud about it but my wife started at our job and we slept together after a party. This was about 6 years ago. My ex found out when she saw nudes on my phone. It broke her and ended our marriage. I married my wife a year later. Everything was fine and my children gradually forgiven me and much of it was thanks to my ex who insisted that I was still their father and that I loved my children. They never liked my wife however because they’ve overheard her (my daughter did) talking badly about how fat and old their mother was and how she was no competition. Now my ex is happily engaged to a man who is very well off. My wife was depressed ever since she heard that. Making comments about what he sees in her and how it wouldn’t last. She has googled everything about him. His networth, property, social media accounts and she doesn’t stop talking about him. I got very wary and this last week she’s been extra depressed and angry. Not sleeping and she cried several times. When she was finally taking a nap I took her phone and saw that she has sent the new fiancé some flirtatious texts via instagram and even one nude. He only answered the first dms when she introduced herself, congratulated him about the engagement and told him that they were basically a family soon. When she was getting more flirtatious he stopped answering and her dms were left on seen. This was last week. The pictures. I called my ex-wife and she confirmed that her fiancé has been receiving these texts and they were embarrassed and unsure what to do so they ignored her. I confronted my wife and she became very angry, saying that I have embarrassed her by talking to my ex. She was crying when I told her that my ex was the one who suggested that they just ignore her and not say anything (isn’t that better for her?) She admitted that she sent these but it was just because she felt my ex was a b i t c…. that didn’t deserve a fiancé like hers with lots of money. My ex wife would be living in a 19th century “penthouse” . She also told me that I was the one who driven her to this since she never felt she’s won me completely. That I married her after my divorce was a fact. I made her insecure. I don’t understand. I thought we were happy. That she was happy. She always told me how she loved me. I feel guilty like I have made her miserable and drove her to be this insecure but at the same time I’m very pissed. COMMENTS OOP I don’t know if I need to put ages or if it i irrelevant I’m 41 Wife 33 Ex wife 43 Fiancé 40-45 (not sure) Kittytigris So your mistress is upset that she bet on the wrong horse and has serious regrets? I’d re-examined the entire relationship once I find that she’d DMed the new fiancé with nudes. Honestly, I’d probably tell her to pack up and leave and then apologized to my ex wife for her behavior and wish my ex well. OOP She swore that she wasn’t interested in him. Just that she felt that my ex wasn’t worth what she’s getting and that she (ex) has been smug and arrogant about it so my wife thought she wanted to give her a wake up call. Her words not_ob-liv-ious I think it’s very disturbing behavior that she helped to breakup one marriage of this woman, and tried to breakup a 2nd relationship of this woman. There is definitely deep seeded obsession and jealousy….as if she is in competition. Bad talking your ex is also a sign of this. I give your ex so much credit in the way she has handled your divorce and being able to help your relationship with your kids flourish…..many woman in her shoes would find this very difficult. But also to have the presence of mind and the grace to ignore the same woman who helped destroy her marriage because she doesn’t want to cause issues and embarrassment? Your ex is a saint and I hope you appreciate her. Your wife needs help and if I were you I would really think hard if she is actually a healthy partner for you. I mean, your kids don’t like her, and that’s got to be tense for you, she trash talks your ex, that’s got to be difficult to deal with AND she basically attempted to cheat on you in a sick and twisted attempt to hurt your ex. OOP I know that my ex is one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met. Both inside and out. I don’t understand why my wife hates her. She never once blamed my wife for anything and she was really helpful in making my family and friends not to shun me and my wife. And as I said it is thanks to her I still have the love of my children. braith_rose This is exactly what cheating gets you. Choosing short term validation and orgasams over (real) love, emotional labor, patience, and grace. Unless you realize why marrying her was a mistake, you're doomed to repeat this. Unless your only goal was to save face once you realized you took a nasty dump all over your first marriage. The reason she's turned into a banshee is because she wasn't with you out of agape, or real deep love. She was with you because it made her feel better about herself. Women who play these games will always be looking for outside sources of validation to fill the hole where their self esteem should be. Otherwise they wouldn't be fighting over sloppy seconds and 'prizes'. They are called pick-mes and have warped self esteem. They make reactionary choices for cheap validation and kibbles instead of retrospecting on what would really make them happy. Being 'above' your first wife was really important to her, and now that fantasy bubble has popped because she found out she disgraced herself for an average guy. You made this bed. OOP I admit it was to save face. Marrying my wife. That’s why I feel guilty now and not just outright pissed. I still love my ex and even though I’m happy she is happy again. I regret what I did every day. I think my wife knows this. That’s why I’m not as pissed as I should be generic230 Your problem is that you’re a poor decision maker. You won’t really be able to fix any of this until you understand WHY you make such poor decisions because frankly, marrying the woman you had an affair with only 1 year after your divorce tells me you didn’t properly examine your motives that led to this whole mess. OOP When it came out what I did nobody wanted to have anything to do with me, but for my wife who was there. So we got married. I probably wanted to save face and for it not to be meaningless. Not to have cheated on someone I loved for nothing. JM_Flynn I hope you didn't have children with this person. She's obsessed with your ex. Did they have a relationship prior to your affair? She's absolutely fixated. OOP No she only met my ex a couple of times before the affair. You think she chose me because of my ex? Because my ex was very well liked in my office amongst my closest colleagues. We don’t have children Final Update - after 2 days July 25, 2023 Hi everyone this is an update about my situation We are getting divorced. I have had multiple conversations with my wife about what she did but unfortunately she doesn’t seem to see how bad it is what she done. She says that she never was interested in my ex’s fiancé and just wanted to make a point (to herself more than to anyone) and that she still believes she could take him if she wanted. She doesn’t consider what she did cheating. It was a “test” She said that if she really didn’t love me she would have left long time ago because she can get whoever she wants. I was speechless hearing her rage and cry. But I was done. We don’t have children and we have very few joint assets to divide. She will stay in the house until she can find a place to go but then we are done. She is raging and calling me all sorts but I guess I’m just so very tired and done now Thanks for the wake up call. I know I’m a shitty person but maybe it is time for me to stop punishing myself for what I did. My wife was my constant reminder of the damage I done and maybe deep down I knew she was a bad person but I felt that I didn’t deserve better because I’m a bad person too, worse even. But maybe enough is enough and I need to stop punishing myself. I have two wonderful children so maybe I’m not just bad. For any legal advice: remember I’m not from wherever you come from and I’m not disclosing my identity or location. So please don’t bother me with legal advice. COMMENTS smooner1993 Your wife’s response makes me wonder if she knew your wife prior to “meeting” you. Kind of on the level of the show “You”. I worry about your ex-wife’s safety with the comments regarding “I can steal him if I want to”. She orchestrated your relationship from the start and was focused on destroying your wife at the time OR she realized she gets some weird ego/power boost from “stealing” married men and now she’s jealous of your ex because she didn’t “win”. I would notify your ex wife so she can place an OFP (order for protection) just in case. OOP No I don’t think my wife knew my ex wife. Her obsession started afterwards and my guess is because she never got a reaction from my ex who handled the situation maturely. Even her remarks about my ex’s looks are some sort of ego boost since everyone knows that my ex is very physically beautiful and it hurt my wife very much to hear gossip about me trading down. I don’t know if I did enough to make my wife feel better either so her obsession may lie with me too not only my wife. But I can’t stay anymore even if I admit that I’m not a good person. Foolish5678 I hope your ex wife finally finds some peace from this woman Not enough she ruined her life once, had to try again for funsies again.... just to prove it to herself. OOP She is doing fine and she’s very happy with her life. Quick-Store2989 Your wife seems unhinged and may try something with your ex and her new fiancé to prove she’s better. I would give them a heads up so if they need to get a restraining order. She seems slightly obsessed with hurting your ex for some reason which is super weird. OOP They have blocked her on all sm. My wife was hysterical and demanded to know what I have told them but I think she is just embarrassed now and want it to go away. Also she wants to save our marriage. nighthouse_666 Good luck. I’m so proud of my Niece for making sure the ladies have fun too
It was her son’s christening. At the venue there was a bar, food and a dj. Naturally all the men flock to the bar for beers to get drunk while the women, especially the mothers were left lumbered with the babies and toddlers It started off fun, we all played with the little ones, danced with them, passed the babies around for cuddles etc but then we realised how much fun the men were having with 0 responsibility and we started talking about it So my niece said no disrespect to anyone, but why are we expected to just run a crèche while the men have all the fun? I want to drink and dance with my girls but the men are just drinking and eating all the food with no cares. So she got up and spoke to the DJ. Next thing you know there’s an announcement “GENTLEMEN you are now on baby duty before you get too drunk. This next song and the songs after are for the ladies!” I don’t think most of these dads even knew they had a baby because they just stood there confused and the moms had to bring their babies over to them and explain why they they want to have fun 🤯 The attitudes of some of the dads were a disgrace and a few of the aunties and grandmothers stepped in to take the babies. It really showed how unequal parenting really is and how disgraceful some men are to their families. But we didn’t have any time to argue, we all ordered a glass of something nice, took our shoes off, blasted that dance floor and had the best time. I love her so much for that and I know she’s going to raise that little boy to be a good man EDIT: this is not a religious thing specifically. In the UK christenings are more of a celebration of the baby’s birth than anything else. We go to church for 20 mins and then we celebrate at a venue or the parent’s house 🥳 submitted by /u/WildWinterberry to r/TwoXChromosomes [link] [comments]

My (36M) wife (34F) fell deep into conspiracy theories and online hate groups. Is there any saving our marriage?
I am NOT the Original Poster. That is Loud_Ad_9189. He posted in r/relationship_advice and r/QAnonCasualties Thanks to u/nursechai, u/Creepy_Addict and u/CourageKind for the recommendation. Do NOT Comment on Original Posts. Latest update is 7 days old. Trigger Warning: domestic violence; racism; cult-like mentality; delusion; likely some sort of undefined mental illness; bullying Mood Spoiler: so frustrating and sad for OOP, but he and daughter are ok Original Post: October 5, 2025 I (36M) have been married to my wife (34F) for six years. We have a 4-year-old daughter, and I really don’t want to divorce but I’m starting to feel like I’ve run out of options. When we first met, my wife was a kind, brilliant and outgoing person. Over the past few years, she’s changed in ways that really scare me. She’s become very involved in online conspiracy spaces and online hate groups and now spends hours every day scrolling and arguing online. It’s like she’s living in a different reality. She hasn’t held a stable job in about three years. She’ll take on part-time work but ends up quitting or getting fired after a few months. Meanwhile, I’ve become the sole provider and have also taken on most of the parenting. Our daughter loves her mom, but my wife often seems distracted or disengaged, and it breaks my heart to see that. Another issue is she has became more racist overtime. It started as an obsessive dislike of a certain celebrity, but it’s turned into outright racist comments, particularly toward women of color. She’s lost several friendships because of it, and even her family has started to distance themselves. They still check in on me and our daughter, but they’ve made it clear they don’t know how to reach her anymore. I’ve begged her to try therapy. She actually did for a few months once, and for a little while, I saw glimpses of the person she used to be. But she quit, and everything went back to the way it was. I’m emotionally exhausted and worried about the environment our daughter is growing up in. I don’t want her picking up these beliefs or thinking this level of disconnection is normal. That said, I’m also terrified of what divorce might do to her. I always believed in trying everything before walking away, and I don’t want to feel like I gave up too soon. That’s why I’m thinking about asking my wife to go to couples therapy. Maybe she’d be more open to it since it won't be just her? My question is how do I even bring this up? Would it be wrong to tell her that I’m considering divorce if she refuses? I don’t want it to sound like a threat; I just want her to understand how serious things have gotten. I love her and want to believe there’s still a way forward, but I can’t keep doing this by myself. If anyone has been in a similar situation with a partner who’s fallen deep into conspiracies or become resistant to therapy, how did you approach it? I really want to try everything I can before making such a painful decision. Some of OOP's Comments: unimpressed46: Threatening divorce to force her into couples counseling is not the appropriate route. For couples counseling to work, both people need to be open and willing to do the work. Approach couples counseling as a team effort. It’s something that could help you both better communicate and work together. Couples counseling doesn’t solve relationship issues. But it can give you the tools to tackle the issues together. The rabbit hole of conspiracies is difficult to pull someone out of. It’s almost like an addiction, and you can’t force someone out of addiction if they don’t want to give it up. Consider counseling for yourself as well. It may help you navigate this situation. OOP: I feel like I don't even know how to talk to her anymore. She rants at me about things but I haven't had a good conversation with her for the longest time. Appreciate what you said about getting counseling for myself. I’ve honestly been so overwhelmed RideJackRide: You face what I did with my brother. Unfortunately the main problem with all-things-conspiratorial is the cult members are programmed to reject absolutely everything that refutes their positions. Counseling will only work if she realizes she has an issue. And you can't really use it as a lever because there is just no way she will respond to the stick without automatically concluding that you are part of the [cabal / Deep State / libtard / "Them"] that is out to get her and her cult members. It did not end remotely well with my brother. We are permanently estranged. The Q is strong with the Qnutz. OOP: I was afraid to hear this. She isn't exactly Qanon, she used to be liberal but she is now strongly anti-vaxx, thinking of homeschooling our daughter because the education system is grooming kids or whatever, anti-government, anti-Meghan Markle...it's a long list. Sorry about your brother lknei: Your daughter will do far better being raised in a co-parenting arrangement than being raised in a loveless home. Staying together for her is not the right choice. You need to want to stay together because that's what is best for you and your wife and it seems like your wife isnt good for you anymore OOP: One of the things that really scares me about the idea of divorce is what would happen with a custody arrangement. I may not have any control over what our daughter is exposed to during her time with her mom. I’m also scared about her general attentiveness. My wife can get so wrapped up in her phone or online discussions that she tunes everything else out. If our daughter needed her or got hurt, I’m not confident she’d notice right away. ChromeLightBulb: [...] If possible I'd try filming the moments you mentioned where your daughter is specifically trying to interact but she's clearly not interested as she's on her phone etc and play them back to her. [...] OOP: Thank you for the filming suggestion. OOP adds: She used to be a very outgoing person. She had a large supportive circle of family and friends, was involved in our community and then covid hit and she started spending so much time online and just never went back to being her old self no matter how hard I tried or her family or friends tried to reach her DaniTully: As soon as you mentioned getting obsessed with a celebrity and now is against women of color, I pegged this as a Meghan Markle thing. I am sorry she has found her dopamine hits in hatred. Best of luck to you and your daughter. OOP: Surprisingly, her obsession with Meghan Markle has been just as detrimental as her anti-vax or anti-education beliefs. It’s been one of her longest running online fixations and, in many ways, acted as a gateway for more extreme behaviors. What started as constant criticism slowly bled into racist attitudes in real life. Editor's note: OOP has some comments from awhile ago talking about his wife's fixation and hatred of Meghan Markle and how it is worrying him. RawMeHanzo: And you're perfectly okay having your children growing up to be racist, too? You need to divorce her, no matter what "happens" to her. She's going to turn your children into hateful little bigots if they hear the pathetic vitriol their mother is spewing. OOP: I'm not ok with my daughter growing up to be racist or mean to other women. This isn’t who my wife used to be and I kept hoping something like therapy could help her find her way back. I’ve been doing everything I can to protect my daughter from this but people keep acting like divorce is some magic fix. If we split there’s a good chance we’ll have shared custody, and I won’t be there to protect my daughter the way I can now. wino12312: Talk to a lawyer. Usually they offer a free consult. This will give you the information you need to make a decision. I worried and worried for nothing. But do protect your daughter. Go for full custody and let her testify on her behalf. OOP: Will definitely start looking into a lawyer and getting full custody QAnon Casualty Post: November 8, 2025 (one month later) Editor's note: I took out the parts of the post that were repeating parts of the first post or part of the comments. [...] At first, she started with anti-vax talking points. I had our family doctor talk with her, and she seemed to have gotten over it but she still brings up vaccines being poison and causing autism occasionally. Around this time, she also began to have an obsessive dislike of a certain celebrity, which slowly morphed into outright racism, particularly towards women of color. She’s lost several friendships because of it, and her family began to distance themselves. They still check in on me and our daughter, but they’ve made it clear they don’t know how to reach her anymore. She has started talking about homeschooling our daughter because the education system is grooming kids and the government is brainwashing children. I've told her our daughter will be going to a normal school and having normal social interactions with kids her age. [...] My wife hasn’t held a stable job in about three years. She’ll take on part-time work but ends up quitting or getting fired after a few months. I’ve become the sole provider and have also taken on most of the parenting. Our daughter loves her mom, but my wife often seems distracted or disengaged, and it breaks my heart to see that. I've tried to get her off the Internet by suggesting we spend more time as a couple/family. For the latest attempt I got her out of the house to go trick or treating. She barely bothered to smile or show enthusiasm for our daughter but for 3 days after I was treated to her saying nasty things about her celebrity obsession going trick or treating with her own kids. She goes on long rants about these things to me so often that I can't recall the last time I had an actual conversation with her. I've been leaning more towards getting a divorce recently, but I am scared that if we have a shared custody arrangement I wouldn't be able to control what my daughter is exposed to. I'm also terrified that my wife is so distracted when she is online that she may not notice right away if my daughter got hurt or needed her. She once forgot to give her lunch because she was on her phone and yelled at her when she started crying. I've been told this sub has seen a few success stories in getting people back to reality and would appreciate any advice from persons who have been in similar situations. Is my marriage even salvageable anymore? Some of OOP's Comments: To a longer Comment: I had some luck with getting our doctor to talk to her about her anti-vax views. I was hopeful that getting a teacher or someone she trusts within the education profession would convince her that home schooling would not be best for our daughter and she isn't equipped to homeschool a kid. But who can I get to convince her not to be racist or not to obsess about Meghan Markle online? Are you and your wife divorced now? SoVerySleepy81: Was her therapy coupled with antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication? When my mental illness was not being treated correctly and it was being allowed to kind of just rampage I was very into conspiracy theories. Once I was being treated correctly that went away pretty quickly because I was able to actually Think in logical ways rather than trying to desperately grasp for explanations for feeling like my world was out of control. OOP: She did therapy when our daughter was around 2. Obviously the therapist didn’t tell me anything directly, but my wife told me the therapist said she had anxiety but was not depressed. That it was normal for new parents to feel some level of anxiety. She did those sessions for a few months without medication and there was improvement, which is part of why this is so frustrating. It showed me she can get better when she engages with help but I can't get her to accept she has a problem and needs treatment anymore. Taking an internet break: I've tried to get her to take a break, I've even thought of cutting off the phone or Internet before but I want to be able to contact her in case there's an emergency with our daughter How the Meghan hate started: I think it started for my wife because Harry and Meghan left the royal family around the time COVID lockdowns happened and there were probably lots of tabloid stuff about them online. Her obsession with Meghan seemed harmless at first but it turned into a pipeline for more racist beliefs Update Post: January 28, 2026 (almost 4 months from OG post) I’ll try to keep this update short. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who took the time to comment and message me. For those who didn’t read the original post I made, I will link it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/relationship_advice/comments/1nywu56/my_36m_wife_34f_fell_deep_into_conspiracy/ Some of you helped me accept a reality I had been avoiding for a long time: my soon to be ex-wife was not going to get better, and I had to act to protect my daughter. I also want to specifically thank those who pointed me to the QAnon Casualties sub. Reading other families’ stories and seeing how similar the patterns were was incredibly validating. It helped me understand that this wasn’t something I could love or wait my way out of. I took the advice of some commenters and started documenting my ex's neglect of our daughter, her racism and extreme beliefs and reached out to a divorce lawyer. I checked on our joint bank accounts as advised and discovered that she had been withdrawing large sums of money from a joint account we opened early in our marriage for family vacations etc and that we had discussed using to eventually set up a college fund for our daughter when she was born. When I confronted her, she initially denied taking the money. When I demanded she show me where the money went, she went on a long rant about "creating a better world." She admitted she had donated money to organizations like TPUSA, claiming they would “create better schools” and “keep kids safe.” She had also spent a significant amount on designer handbags, shoes, and clothing that she had hidden from me. The craziest thing is she was also being scammed by someone she met through some royal gossip subreddit who claimed to have hired a private investigator to expose Meghan Markle. Apparently, this person would send her negative articles about Meghan Markle and claim that the private investigator had discovered this information and sent it to the press and my wife would send more money. She told me all of this as if it were completely reasonable and saw nothing wrong with it. I told her I was filing for divorce and at first she thought I was joking but then exploded at me and began throwing things while ranting about me breaking up the family. A glass cup she threw hit me in the head. I left the house bleeding and went to my neighbor’s, who called the police. She had trashed the kitchen by the time the police showed up and they arrested her after I explained what happened. I applied for and was granted a Domestic Violence Restraining Order, along with temporary custody of my daughter. My wife currently has supervised visitation only. She is facing a misdemeanor criminal charge related to the domestic battery incident, which is being handled in criminal court alongside the ongoing divorce proceedings. She is currently living with a former coworker, and her family has reached out to express support for me and my daughter. I am in the middle of divorce proceedings, and my lawyer believes I have a strong case for sole custody. This isn’t how I ever imagined things ending, but I’m grateful I listened to the advice here when I did. My priority now is my daughter’s safety, stability, and emotional well-being. Thank you to everyone who helped push me to act. Some of OOP's Comments: IvanNemoy: As awful as it sounds, her hitting you with that glass might be the best thing to ever happen in this case. A CDV verdict is usually a massive help to securing custody. Best of luck to you and your kiddo, and hopefully your ex maybe someday regaining their sanity. OOP: My lawyer told me the same thing. Before we had discussed how family courts preferred joint custody arrangements but we might have a chance if I could prove neglect. Her hitting me with the glass and acting unhinged in front of the police really increased those chances. I'm just glad my daughter wasn't around when all this happened. Therapy: I'll be going to therapy when the divorce is settled. I'm currently just focused on making sure my daughter is ok. Thank you for the concern OOP clarifies: She is facing a criminal case which is separate from our divorce proceedings. I'm sorry if that was confusing Again, do NOT comment on Original Posts or DM OOP. submitted by /u/LucyAriaRose to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

New Update: AITA for telling my housemate she can't give me unsolicited advice?
I am still NOT the Original Poster. That is still EmpressoftheBakkhai. She posted in r/AmItheAsshole and commented an update on the first BORU. Previous BORU here. New Update marked with *****. Thanks to OOP herself who commented on the BORU and let me know about the update! Mood Spoiler: good ending Original Post: January 12, 2025 I (27F) have a strange living situation. I live with a family (Chris, 65M, Danielle, 59F, and their daughter) and do household chores in exchange for rent. I've lived here for 19 months; it's mostly smooth sailing. I work full-time and am applying to law school. Danielle has some issues with boundaries (she doesn't understand why she can’t enter my room w/o permission, for example), and I know it's both due to age differences and the fact that they allow me to live in their house for free. I have to be very careful when enforcing boundaries. Yesterday, I made dinner for everyone after a full day of chores. Around 10 pm, as I was finishing the dishes, Danielle told me I needed to steam clean the carpet in the living room because the cats had peed all over it. I did, and as I was putting the steam cleaner away, Danielle entered and said she wanted me to do another room. Because it was 10:30 at this point and I still wanted to work on an application before bed, I politely but firmly said, "I'm not going to do that." I probably should have said, "I'll do it tomorrow," but I was exhausted, so I just said no. I put the machine away, submitted my application, and went to bed. Tonight, as I was finishing up my meal prep for the week, Danielle cornered me in the kitchen. "I don't want to fight about this," she said, "But I wanted to mention something. Last night when you told me you weren't going to clean the other room, I found it rude. You should be careful when you say things like that at work so that you don't get fired." I was floored. I snapped, "Danielle, you haven't had a job since before I was born. You don't get to give me advice about how to act in the workplace." Danielle rolled her eyes and huffed, "See, I didn't want to fight about this," and walked out of the room. I called after her, "Then maybe don't bring it up?!?" Danielle hasn't spoken to me since, and I don't know what's coming. For context, Danielle has only had one job in her whole life, from age 22 to age 25. After that, she quit to raise kids. I grew up very poor. I have been working since I was 14 and supporting myself since I turned 18. They offered to start our arrangement in 2023 because they needed help around the house and I was struggling financially. As for Danielle's work advice, I currently work as a Regional Manager at a small firm. Not only is her advice outdated, but I can't take it. I'm a people manager; a lot of my day-to-day job involves being polite but unyielding. I think she was frustrated by my setting a boundary and that's why she brought it up. I know part of my frustration is that I feel powerless to protest most of the time. I will be moving out in August of this year when I go to law school (hopefully!), and my goal is just to make it until then. I'm also really frustrated that Danielle felt like she could say whatever she wanted and then walk away as if I had no right to feel anything. AITA for what I said? Some of OOP's Comments: Commenter: INFO: Do you have a rental agreement IN WRITING? Work exchange needs to be clearly defined, including but not limited to: hours, availability, no contact places/times, tasks, etc. Someone who’s demanding you steam clean 2 rooms at 10:30pm is highly suspect. ‘Chores’ is too often seen as ‘women’s work’, aka UNDERVALUED & UNPAID Invisible Labour. However, Invisible Labour done by women is incredibly expensive both in cost & time, aka you may well be doing more than would cover the cost of your rent. Also, I’m inferring from your post that you’re most likely downplaying their ‘requests’. OOP: There is no agreement in writing. I have tried to bring this up on previous occasions because of Danielle's difficulty with boundaries and the sheer amount of work that I do, but it is not taken well. Danielle and Chris are very insistent that I am NOT their tenant and that they are NOT my landlords; I am their "guest." Danielle is also very insistent that she does not want to be called my boss or supervisor in any capacity. To answer other comments here as well, my current position does not pay enough for me to live on my own. I realize that the situation is probably predatory, but because there are only eight months left of this, I plan to just stick it out. It has saved me a lot of money, and I'm thankful for that. Top Commenter: YTA. Not for saying no, but for how you said it. You were not polite. Also, Danielle is not your housemate, she and her husband are your landlords/bosses. You may not be paying rent, but you are paying by being live in help. So, when you told Danielle "I won't be doing that", instead of I'll do it tomorrow. You were rude......to your boss. Also, her advice wasn't outdated, if your spoke to your supervisor at your job that way, there would definitely be a follow up conversation about your choice of words. OOP: (downvoted): Danielle and Chris are very insistent that I am not their employee or tenant and that they are not my bosses or landlords; I am their "guest," and they are doing this "out of the goodness of their hearts." Commenter (downvoted): Definitely NTA and good for you. May I ask how you came to live with this family though? Are they related? Why are you bothering with all this weird ass shit and her bossing you around? OOP: They're actually my best friend's parents. He suggested the arrangement because he knew I needed help; when I moved in I was a teacher and struggling to afford a studio apartment. Since I moved in, I changed careers and decided I wanted to pursue law school. I took the LSAT three times last year on top of all this. I can count on one hand the number of times I've refused a request - I've bleached the showers after midnight, rose at 5am to make requested meals before work, and other things like that without protesting. I see this as an opportunity to make my life better in the long-term while surviving short-term. I just wanted to say no this time because, truthfully, I physically couldn't handle fulfilling the request. Danielle was insistent it had to be done immediately because they wanted to go to bed at 11pm but I just couldn't do it. OOP is voted YTA Mini Update in Comments January 13, 2025 (Next Day) I was voted the asshole, which I understand. What I do adds up to about $2000 per month if you go by the standard of $20/hr, or about 100 hours/month. Most of those hours are concentrated on weekends and 2-3 evenings per week (I make enough food that there are leftovers so I can have a couple of nights off). Included in those hours is a lot of care for their adult daughter who lives with us and is disabled. If I babysit the house pets while the housemates go on vacation, which happens a lot, I charge a $20/day stipend. We have two dogs, three cats, a gecko, and some fish. One of the cats is mine; this is why I cleaned the carpet without protest, because it’s just as likely the piss was his as any of the other cats. I’ve said no to requests three times in 19 months, and each time has been met with pushback like this. All three were due to the time of night they were asked. A lot have called this a form of modern-day slavery, and I see where you’re coming from. I’ve been fine with the situation remaining largely undefined because even when I protest at chores, I haven’t been threatened with “eviction.” I entered into this situation at a time when I was overwhelmed and desperate. It might be predatory, but it was the best opportunity I had. I could have protected myself better going in. As to why I stay in it, it’s because there’s an end date in sight and it will set me up well to keep funneling money into savings for the next few months. If I were “evicted,” it would suck but I would be fine. It’s not ideal but it works. I recognize that I should have worded my response better than I did at the time. However, I do want to push back on the idea that I have to do everything they say because they own the house. If a boss demands overtime from me that’s not previously agreed on, I am allowed to say no, and I have done it many times without affecting my employment whatsoever. In fact, my current boss, who I’ve done this with the most (often using the same wording as here), wrote me an excellent letter of recommendation for law school. Times have changed since the 1980’s, and saying no to bad demands is becoming more and more acceptable. What she meant when she said, "You should be careful when you say things like that at work," was that I shouldn't be assertive at all in a situation where I am a subordinate, which I very much think is outdated advice. I was not invalidating the difficult work of raising a family that Danielle did. I would not dream of offering someone else parenting advice because I haven’t been in their shoes. Hypothetically, if the last time I had raised a child was 30 years ago, I also wouldn’t give advice on raising a kid in the iPad generation. Danielle should not be doing the same to me about work. She is not my professional boss. She has never worked in my field. She knows that she is not my landlady either; if she were, there would be a whole lot of rules she would need to respect that she doesn’t want to (such as entering my room without notice). Again, because I am getting some benefit from the situation, I don’t and won’t threaten legal action here, because I have enough documentation to protect myself. In addition, Chris, Danielle, and I all have personal stakes involved in this going well – we have a ton of mutual friends, one of whom is their son and my best friend. Danielle and Chris have some chronic illnesses that make housework hard for them, so they are also getting a lot out of this situation. I plan to apologize and smooth things over. I will follow much of the advice mentioned here about protecting myself better moving forward. Perhaps naively, I hope this will end well. Danielle and I actually get along very well most of the time; we don't hate each other by any means, and we both ultimately want to see the other happy. That's why this has worked for so long. To everyone who says that this situation proves I don’t have what it takes to be a lawyer, don’t worry—you will probably never be my client. Update (Same Post): January 14, 2025 (2 days from OG post) UPDATE: First, as an aside, a lot of the comments here missed the point. Danielle was not angry with me for refusing to do an additional chore at 10:30pm; that was not the issue. Even by the most generous of understandings, demanding additional overtime work at the end of a 14-hour shift is unreasonable, and she knew that. During our follow-up discussion, she added a detail I had totally forgotten about – the second room in question has a large potted Fiddle-Leaf Fig tree in it, and in order to steam clean the additional room, the tree needs to be moved. Neither she or I were able to move it after multiple attempts, so at that point I said, “Until Chris and I can figure out a way to move this, the steam cleaning will have to wait. I know you want it done tonight, but I will not be doing that.” Very important context that I missed adding when I was angry. The issue in question was the exchange the next day. As to how I responded the second day when she came to confront me on my wording, for that, I understand now that I was absolutely the asshole. As one of my close friends put it to me, “Those are inside thoughts.” My context about her work history was also unnecessary and irrelevant. Last night, I approached Danielle and opened the conversation with a profuse apology. No qualifiers, no protests, just that I was rude during our kitchen conversation and I needed to apologize. She in turn immediately apologized for her incredibly poor introduction to the follow-up conversation and for cornering me in the kitchen while I was otherwise occupied instead of meeting with me at a more neutral time. Chris then joined us and we had an extensive conversation. During the conversation, I asked them to define how they view our arrangement. They were immediately very clear that they don’t see me as a tenant, employee, or servant. I pointed out that if that is how they want to view things, then I need to be free to say no extra requests. They were receptive to this. I also pointed out that in our state, I could either be considered a tenant or a live-in domestic worker, but due to the length of time I’ve resided here and the conditions in place, I am definitely not considered just a guest. They did get offended that I see our relationship as fundamentally a transaction, which I found kind of funny, because while they have the freedom to frame it in their minds as “we’re helping this person out and she’s helping us out,” it’s wise for me to see it differently. I do have obligations to them and my life has substantially larger implications should this not work out. In the end, they agreed that because they aren’t landlords and I am not their employee (in their minds), I should be receiving more freedom than I have been given. Chris and Danielle have chronic illnesses that make most of the work I do very difficult for them, including a lot of the care I provide for their adult daughter who lives with us. We then outlined (again) exactly what my responsibilities are and what they’re not. Finally, to my surprise, they apologized for previous invasions of privacy and agreed that we would put a lock on my room door. It is an interior lock only so I can’t lock it while I’m gone, but I am fine with the progress. I was never threatened with eviction or anything like that; people can be emotionally mature enough to talk through issues instead of immediately pulling a metaphorical trigger, which is what happened here. After the conversation, I typed out a long email detailing the terms of my living here as it currently stands and had them send a confirmation in reply. While it is not officially a lease, it is something in writing outlining responsibilities that was agreed to by all parties. We agreed that my monthly hours would be reduced to 80 instead of the roughly 100 I have been doing. If the value of that is calculated according to the federal minimum wage, that’s a value of $580 every four weeks, which is more than most rooms-for-rent are in our area. Of course, the labor I do is somewhat skilled and has a market value of at least double, but I used the federal minimum wage for the sake of argument. I also established that the latest I would be available for housework is 9:30pm, barring some form of emergency, and if a task absolutely requires going past that time, I will be taking that time back on a different day. I know that I will laugh at this in Contracts class in the future, but for now, I’m fine with what it is. Like I said in a comment, it’s not ideal but it works. I’m not in a position where I desperately need this anymore, but I’m going to stay here until August because being able to funnel what otherwise would be paid in rent into savings is doing wonders to set me up for the future. To everyone that commented something along the lines of “You have to do everything she says” or “You’re the help” or “You’re entitled,” I encourage you to think about that perspective more. Employees, household help, and any people in a subordinate position are still very much an individual and deserving of basic respect to their space, their time, and their person. No laws, no matter how extensive, take those basic rights away. Also, if you said it was my “fault” for being in the situation in the first place, kick rocks. We are all working through our own situations where we pick the best option available even if it isn’t perfect. That’s not weakness or stupidity, that’s life. New Update *****Update Post: January 21, 2026 (1 year later)****\* I moved out of Chris and Danielle's house six months ago. We didn't have any more conflicts nearly as big as the one described in the original post. I was frustrated and under a lot of pressure at the time, so I was definitely unnecessarily verbose in the first post; my bad! Reddit was one of my only outlets and I got a little preachy. Sorry about that! I'm glad I apologized. It's a nuanced situation and I don't think my perspective was "wrong," but like...it doesn't matter and I'm glad I kept the peace. Things ended on good terms. I moved out as planned in August. Danielle actually co-signed my current apartment lease as a final act of kindness! I do have to laugh at my past self for entering into that weird living situation. Now that I've taken a Contracts class, I would never do that again, or at least not without putting terms in writing first. I don't fault myself, though; poverty is a tough place to be and I was desperate. I met Danielle for lunch last week, and we caught up on life. They haven't really changed their entitled attitudes, but that's none of my business, so, I just smile and wave and move on. Their son is still my bestie for all time! submitted by

I (f25) found clothes that aren’t mine, and my boyfriend (m25) is responding differently
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/Contario_broke I (f25) found clothes that aren’t mine, and my boyfriend (m25) is responding differently TRIGGER WARNING: Probable Infidelity Original Post Sept 13, 2023 Sorry it’s long Yesterday, i was wiping down our laundry room & threw out all of our old detergent + lint garbage. It was completely empty in there besides a new detergent and dryer sheets. Yesterday at 10pm, I went in there to make sure our garage door was locked & it looked the exact same- empty. This morning before work, I saw he left his clothes from yesterday on the ground. I found these socks with them that are really expensive and I know for sure they’re not mine. I didn’t speculate cheating at first, but now I might be based off of his responses? His responses were very odd, I didn’t pry or say anything weird.. nor did I insinuate anything. Word for word what I said ‘Good morning Love! This morning I found socks in the laundry room. They were a bit dirty so I cleaned them, they are an expensive designer brand so they definitely should be returned to whoever they belong to! They’re ___ brand, and apparently when you spend $50 on socks they have a shoe size 😆 It’s a women’s size 5, and if you can just let them know they’re here I can let them in or you can just bring it to them!’ After that it was almost like an interrogation on me, whether or not I remember ‘properly’ (which I am 1000% sure they weren’t in the laundry room yesterday and 1000% they’re not mine.) which is odd, he doesn’t normally react this way. Also, he proceeds with ‘also, I like to do my own laundry’ which is not true, I WFH and he begs me to do his laundry.. so also very odd. Then he goes onto say it’s our friend Brian’s, and he has small feet so makes sense.. I messaged Brian and he said ‘those are not my socks, or anyone I know. They’re too small for me & my girlfriend. I’m a size 11 & she’s a size 8 so they wouldn’t even fit. Thanks for checking though, you should just keep them!’ so I told my partner ‘hey not Brian’s, idc who’s socks they are can you just get them returned? I don’t want the dog to get them’ he then ignores the question, asks if I was going to his fam dinner- which I never say no, so I thought this was odd too? He called me right after I said ‘why wouldn’t I go?’ And then said ‘idk thought maybe you wouldn’t want to go but you can come obviously. Also who spends $50 on socks? You’re sure they’re not yours? I remember seeing you wear them’ I said ‘no clue who would pay that much, but I don’t want the dog to get them.. i know for a fact they’re not mine & apparently they’re not Brian’s or Maddy’s’ he said ‘you spoke to him? Today? What did he say?’ So I repeated it, and he said ‘okay, well I got to go bye have a good day. Love you’ and hung up… He knows I’m not controlling or jealous, i don’t care if he has friendships or carpools, works with, or regularly associates with other females. If he had said ‘oh that’s my friends ____’ and it was a woman, I wouldn’t have bat an eye & he knows this based off of previous experiences together. Idk it’s just odd to me now and maybe I’m overthinking… am I stressing or is this something I should be worried about? TL;DR found clothes that aren’t mine, my boyfriend is reacting differently than he normally does when we speak. It makes me feel like I should be worried. I (f25) think my bf (m25) of 5 years may be cheating on me RELEVANT COMMENTS ElectricityBiscuit86 You've been with him 5 years, you presumable know him very well so if you think he's acting weird or his response is out of character, trust your gut. You can either have the conversation "hey, so your reaction to the socks was confusing, let's talk..." and see if he spirals further/is still super defensive, or you could let it go for now but watch things closely. Is he being weird about other stuff, going out or saying out in non-routine ways, more guarded with his phone or spending longer in the bathroom, that kind of stuff. It's up to you, but don't just sweep it under the rug and convince yourself you're overreacting. You saw what you saw, and the socks came from somwhere akath0110 Also very shady that the partner tried to turn it around on OP — “sure they aren’t yours?” That’s the biggest tell. If there was a clear explanation, he would say so. If he truly was bewildered, he would say that. He wouldn’t try to gaslight OP. Basically he low key told on himself. Colorfuel Agreed, I was actually anticipating from title that OP had approached it confrontationally..but it’s hard to believe that anyone would be so affected by such a benign situation and comment that they it would noticeably affect their behavior for any sustained length of time unless there was more to the story than it would seem. I don’t want to immediately jump to cheating; it’s possible there could be something else maybe personally embarrassing to him about the socks; maybe they’re his or he borrowed them in a pinch and initially liked them but now feels embarrassed once OP described them as small, or fancy (maybe too girly? Idk)….I could see something like that going on too; although I will admit that the anxiety around what his friend may or may not have said to you is particularly worrisome. Keep us updated! OOP I’m sorry I didn’t. I honestly didn’t suspect it to be something bigger than it was until it was almost too late to talk about it. He’s also a very calm and casual texter, so I didn’t want to be confrontational over text once I did get the iffy feeling. He’s also a good liar on the phone (at least from what I’ve seen him lie to other people) but not really when you’re looking at him. I didn’t go to dinner with him as I was upset, and the comments made me realize the likelihood of him cheating. All this being said, I am not sure when I’ll be able to update (tonight or Tmo) as I had to go my family’s house for an emergency just before he got home. I should be home tonight to talk to him though Update - rareddit Sept 20, 2023 (1 week later) I’m really sorry for the delay…. Super busy week I brought this up with him when we both were finally home together and he got frustrated. He got mad and said (paraphrasing it but along these words) ‘I thought we dropped this, you should trust me and if you don’t your insecurity is not a reflection of who I am as a person’. I had told him ‘I am not insecure about myself, or frankly this relationship. If you cheated, you cheated. If you didn’t, you didn’t. Either way I’ll be okay, and I just want to know the truth, no judgement or fights.’ He continued to fight, calling me names I’ve never heard him call me or any other woman before… I knew right there truthfully. He said I should just trust him after knowing how he felt finding out his mom cheated on his dad. Normally this would be valid, but for him he wasn’t really affected by ‘cheating is such a fucked up thing to do..’ it was more so guarding himself more and taking a step back from vulnerability. I brought up how he lied and why that concerned me and made me feel this way, but he said he doesn’t recall saying the lie.. I asked him blatantly if he cheated and he got mad again. I said ‘I need you to answer it’ and he got mad and yelled ‘nothing fucking happened. Why are you so crazy, and insecure?’ Mind you, i asked if we could talk, he said yes. I was calm and told him how I felt about the situation and wanted to know if anything happened. I did not raise my voice, I did not interrupt, I listened & was clear with what I was asking. I was understanding about his feelings, and even apologized for my actions that contributed to his feelings. I was not crazy, and I am not insecure. I told him I want to be strictly friends, he doesn’t want to. I’ve been packing my stuff while looking for an apartment, if I can’t find an available home by I’m done packing I will be moving to my family’s house short term. TL;DR asked my partner if they cheated and fought about it FINAL COMMENTS OOP aaded this edit in the comments I did tell him the way he spoke to me, made me realize on the spot that for 1. He was likely lying, but for 2. I will never subject myself to be spoken like that and cannot continue to be in a relationship with anyone who can say what he said to their partner. He wants to work it out and think one fight shouldn’t end a 5 year relationship. I let him know that I wouldn’t be giving it a fair chance to work if I stayed, I do not see him the same way I saw him before this conversation. It is unfair to drag it out when I know exactly how I feel right now. LastCut3224 Tell him him that you'll stay if he comes clean. Hopefully record it too. Then continue to dump his sorry ass. Send a text to his father so that he'll be disappointed his son turned out like his mother OOP His father is truly one of the kindest people I met, I wouldn’t wish him having any ill feelings with his family. I don’t hate my now ex, I just don’t love him anymore. Honestly, I’ve felt anger so much this week and it’s done nothing beneficial. I’ve been clearing my head, thinking of positives, going through my memories… I felt relief. Relief that I know now, and not later down the road. Relief that I can solely focus on myself. Relief a baby wasn’t involved, and that we aren’t married. It’s a shitty situation, but the relief is a way better feeling than the anger QueenAlpaca You’re the most level-headed OP I’ve come across in a long time. Good for you, and I wish you well in moving on. OOP Thank you & truthfully, I don’t know if I would’ve been level-headed if the conversation went differently. The moment I was being spoken to that way, completely made me look at him differently. I didn’t want to fight, I didn’t want to argue. I didn’t want to be with him at all. kaylakunnymuffin I commend you for your maturity and being so level headed. I on the other hand, am not like this but am working on it lol I do have to ask though, do you think you may have been a bit checked out before this situation came about? I only ask, because I've been in similar situations with ex partners before and I was pretty cool, calm and collected when I ended things, but mainly because I was mostly already checked out of that relationship, mentally anyway. OOP Similar but not quite. As soon as he used the words he did, I was done. It was easy for me not to be mad because there was no reason fighting with someone I will be blocking, and there’s no reason to fight and act like I care to make it work when I clearly do not. I was a bit anxious following up to our conversation that was a few after the original post, but I wasn’t checked out until the language he used Abualiexpress1 He couldn't answer a simple yes or no answer and got mad at you instead. I think you are right for moving on. Classic cheater manouver (DARVO): Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. Just because his mom cheated on his dad doesn't make him immune to cheating. OOP Thank you, me too cinnamon_s Just because it happened with his parents does not mean he wouldn't. It's a cover. OOP No it does not mean anything to be honest. But even with that, we’ve talked about how he felt after knowing this and it was basically just him having issues with trusting women lol THIS IS A REPOST SUB - I AM NOT THE OOP DO NOT CONTACT THE OOP's OR COMMENT ON LINKED POSTS, REMEMBER - RULE 7 submitted by /u/Direct-Caterpillar77 to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

I have slept with both of my best friends and my boyfriend of 4yrs is uncomfortable with that
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/bfandbestfriends I have slept with both of my best friends and my boyfriend of 4yrs is uncomfortable with that BoRU 1 Posted by u/darrow19 TRIGGER WARNING: manipulation, slut shaming, discussion if infidelity MOOD SPOILER: Unexpectedly super positive Original Post Apr 30, 2015 I'll be breaking this up into sections, just to keep it all in chronological order. You can scroll down to Part III for the actual issue with my boyfriend. And I'll have a TL;DR at the bottom because man this is going to be long. Part I: THE BACKGROUND Let me start right off with the problem: my two best friends in the world are male, and I've slept with both of them. It's not as bad as it seems, though! It's not like I have feelings for either of them. They're both childhood friends whom I've known for years and years, so I love them both with all of my heart, but the thought of being in a relationship with either of them is unfathomable. One of them (We'll call him Rob) is married now, but we had a brief relationship senior year of high school. We broke up after less than a year for several reasons—I wanted to travel abroad for university, he wanted kids and I didn't, his mother didn't think I was a good fit for him (I know)—but we still remained friends. The other (we'll call him John) is a bit more complicated. I would never date him, because he has serious issues. And it's not so much the issues that stop me from dating him, but the fact that he adamantly refuses any kind of help or therapy for them. He had some major childhood trauma that he's bigtime repressing, and it's affected his ability to have a relationship. He's a bit of a womanizer. After I got back from university abroad, I was 23 and all alone and I needed a place to live. His parents had moved out to a condo on the beach and they let John live in their old house. And he offered me one of the spare bedrooms for very low rent. So we lived together for a while without incident. I dated a guy for like two years, and John had a constant stream of women in and out of his bedroom. But we discovered a system that worked for us, and we became closer than ever. The problem was, one night about a year after I broke up with my ex, we hung out in the house alone and got drunk together. We were both super horny and hooked up. And we had AMAZING sex. Like, really, mind-blowing. I don't know if it was because I was drunk or because I'd only slept with two other people in my life who were both subpar (Rob and I were virgins and we only had sex like twice before we broke up, and one of the main reasons I split with my other ex was sexual incompatibility), but either way, it was great and we didn't want to stop. So we kept hooking up for about eight months. At that point, one of his old exes came back into his life, and he realized he had feelings for her. We tried to stop hooking up, but quite frankly, we have no self-control. I realized was 29 and had a steady job and there was no reason I shouldn't move out. So I left. We had one last night of sex the day before I moved out and agreed to never talk about it again. Part II: THE BOYFRIEND You can skip this section, I suppose. It just talks about how my boyfriend (who we'll call Sam) and I got together and outlines some of his insecurities and why this may be a problem for him. Sam had been a longtime coworker of mine. We started working together when I got my job at 26. He was 29 and getting divorced. He told me all about it as it was happening—he and his wife got married way too fast. She had just broken up with her ex, and five months into dating Sam, she discovered she was pregnant with her ex's child. She pressured Sam into marriage because she didn't want to be a single mom, and he agreed. You can imagine why this didn't work out. Anyway, Sam and I became best friends in the workplace. He would tell me stories about his divorce, and I would tell him embarrassing childhood stories about Rob and John. Oh yeah, didn't I mention? We all work together! Rob and John are in different departments, but it's a pretty close-knit company. So he knew I had dated Rob in high school, but he never knew about me hooking up with John. When I told him I was moving out of John's house, he asked me why, and I just said that we were getting older and it was time for me to get my own place (which was absolutely true!). That just happened to be the day that he confessed his longtime feelings for me, and we began to date. Part III: THE PROBLEM About half a year ago, we decided to move in together. His lease was ending and I owned my house, so he moved into my place. He sometimes works really late nights, and on occasion I'll have Rob or John over to keep me company when he does. Last night he was meant to be working until 11pm. John was here and we were hanging out in the living room. It was about 10:30pm, and we were drinking a bit and talking kind of loudly. John mentioned to me that his girlfriend was always jealous/worried that he and I had feelings for each other. I said that was silly, and that just because two people have great sex doesn't mean they're in love. As I said, we were talking pretty loudly, so I guess Sam came in at some point and heard me say that. I didn't even hear him unlock the front door. But he stormed into the living room and confronted me, asking when John and I had had sex. He looked equal parts disappointed and angry. John left because he didn't want to be involved in our argument. I explained everything—told him John and I used to hook up when we lived together, and that was part of the reason I moved out of his place, because it wasn't healthy for us to have that kind of relationship. It had been four years and we rarely ever spoke about it, and it hasn't affected our friendship at all. Sam now tells me he's uncomfortable with the fact that I have slept with both of the people I consider my best friends in the world. He's also uncomfortable with the fact that, just a few days before he and I got together, I had sex with John. He says it taints our entire relationship because I lied to him about it. I think he's being a bit puritanical about it. Of course I have a sexual past, and why does it matter if it was only a few days before, since it didn't mean anything? It's not like I had feelings for John! And we always used protection and frequently got tested, and I told Sam that, so it's not like he's concerned about the health risks. He's just jealous. And he wants me to hang out with John less, and he doesn't feel comfortable with us drinking together at all. He also insists I should make new friends and separate myself a bit from Rob and John, because it's weird that both of the people I'm closest with are people who have seen me naked. I think he's being entirely unreasonable. John and I are both in relationships, and we have no feelings for each other whatsoever. The fact that we hooked up with each other for a while is something we want to leave in the past. And to bring Rob into it is just ridiculous. It's been 15 years since we had anything to do with each other romantically, and he's now married with kids. I think Sam just wants to punish me or something because he's weirdly jealous. I honestly don't know what to make of this situation. TL;DR Rob and John, my two best friends in the world, are male, and I've slept with both of them. I was with Rob like 15 years ago and we broke up. John and I had a FWB situation and the last time we hooked up was a few days before I started dating my current boyfriend, Sam. Sam just found out about John and thinks it's weird that I'm still so close with people I've had sex with. Is he in the right? Should I reduce my contact with Rob and John and try to make new friends? Or is Sam just being unreasonable? RELEVANT COMMENTS [deleted] You want to see his point of view? Switch your positions. Put yourself in his shoes: he's got two best friends, who happen to be female, that he also used to sleep with. Now, one night you come home from work, Sam is hanging out with one of them, and you hear them mention how they had great sex. Go on, please, tell me how you react to this knowledge. Is he unreasonable in terms of Rob? Yes, the man is married now. Is he unreasonable about John? No, not really. Are these two your only friends or do you simply hang out with them the most out of everyone? OOP I mean, I do have other friends obviously, but we went to school together and we've been friends for almost our entire lives. But I guess I see where he's coming from with John. I just got so caught up in the fact that he was bringing Rob into it too that I couldn't take him seriously. But when you put it like that... [deleted] It's pretty common though that none of us want our SOs to hang out with former lovers, let alone invite them to our shared living space and then have drinks with them in the evening. Sam's issue isn't with the fact that you slept with other people before him, but that you kept these two people in your life so far, and continue to involve them in the life that you share with Sam. I think you've been around Rob and John for far too long that you've simply made them a part of your routine life, so Sam's issue with them might seem unreasonable to you, when it isn't. The question now is whether you're going to do anything about it. OOP That makes sense. I think some part of me was just hoping that since Sam likes both of the guys and is friends with them too, and we've been together for so long, that it wouldn't be a big deal to him. But I understand why it is. At a minimum I need to stop drinking with John and inviting him over late at night. BEST COMMENT Roflllobster Lets write this from his position : Hey everyone. I am in a bit of a situation with my girlfriend. She has 2 best friends who hang out all the time. Now normally I am not jealous but this situation just keeps throwing up red flags. I will skip the long introduction and get right to the situation currently at hand. I occasionally work late. My job can be demanding and my girlfriend doesn't really like to be home alone. I understand that and she normally calls over one of her two friends. I always thought it was nice that they found time to hang out because it can be hard to keep friends after marrying. However I came home last night and before I shut the door I heard a drunken conversation. John stated that his wife was jealous of them and my wife mentioned how they had good sex but his wife didn't need to worry. Needless to say I rushed in and tried to figure out what the hell was going on. I questioned them and apparently they have a past together, which I did not know about. Not only that but apparently it stopped barely before we got together. Everything about this situation makes me feel like I am not getting the full truth. Why didn't she tell me she had sex with this man who is constantly over? Is this the type of thing they talk about on a normal basis? If she had told me before I imagine it would have been less of a shock. But I keep thinking that she hid this from me because she knew she was doing something wrong or that I might not like it. I'm pretty furious right now. She could be cheating on me every time he is over and I would have no clue because I have always assumed she was telling me the whole truth! What do I do? I don't want to throw this away but I can't help but think there is something else going on. As for me, I think you fucked up. You lied by omission and spend time with the person you lied about. Of course he feels like the relationship is tainted. He has had 100% trust in you and your actions and now he is seeing that for 4 years he has been lied to. It retroactively makes him reassess every single situation where you and john were alone together. At a minimum you need to scale back for the time being and stop spending so much late night alone time with him. Update July 4, 2016 (14 months later) I know it's over a year later and probably no one remembers this post. But I will never forget it because hearing from all you Redditors changed my life and saved my relationship. So if there's anyone here who read my last post, you deserve to know that you were right. After reading all the comments on the last post, I realized that Sam was not overreacting at all and would have been more than reasonable to break up with me because of this. I showed him my post, and we had a long discussion in which I promised I would never hang out with Rob or John alone again. I told him I loved him so much and he was the most important person in my life and I would do anything to gain his trust back, even if he wanted me to stop seeing my friends altogether. He said that wasn't necessary, and he didn't mind if I saw them alone occasionally, just he would prefer if it were in public, and not late at night or with alcohol involved. He felt sorry for being judgmental of me, but I told him that he was completely right and my relationship with John was inappropriate; I just needed something like this to make me see it. So we moved past it fairly easily and are actually now married. It was a courthouse wedding on our fifth anniversary, very lovely. Now here's the part where everyone was right. After my conversation with Sam, John and I drifted apart a bit. I still hung out with Rob and his wife, but John broke up with his girlfriend and I no longer felt comfortable being with him alone. So he and I would hang out with Rob, but that happened maybe once or twice a month, where before we would see each other a few times a week. Then last Thanksgiving when Sam and I announced we were getting married, John actually left dinner early. He replied shortly to all my messages, didn't return my calls, and barely spoke to me. I didn't see him again until my wedding in December. You can guess where this is going. Thankfully nothing happened at the wedding (although that would have made for a great screenplay, as someone in a comment on the last post mentioned). It was a small ceremony—just our families, a couple of Sam's friends, Rob, his wife, and John. We went out to a restaurant for a "reception" dinner and John seemed withdrawn the entire time. I guessed he was not happy that I was married. So since Sam and I got back from our honeymoon in January, I have seen John maybe twice: once for Easter and again for Rob's birthday. I've tried to say hi at work, but he always makes an excuse and walks away. He didn't even come to Sam's birthday last month. After that I decided that I would stop trying to reach out to him, and he could talk to me when he was ready. Last week he was finally ready. Sam was offered an opportunity to travel abroad for eight months with his job, with me invited to come along. We decided to accept it, and I suppose John saw Sam's Facebook post about it because the next day John sought me out at work. He asked me if I was really leaving the country for eight months, and when I said yes, he asked why I couldn't stay. I asked why he cared if I stayed when we hadn't really spoken in months. He said "I'm sorry... never mind..." and walked away, but at that point it was clearer than ever what was really going on. So Sam and I are leaving in September. His job will still be waiting for him when he gets back, but I have decided to find a new one. I'm glad that I'll be out of the country for a bit. I feel really stupid to not have realized that John could have feelings for me. There's never been anything there on my end, so I just assumed it was the same for him since we were able to be roommates and FWB. It seems obvious now. Everyone who commented on my last post was spot-on about our relationship not being normal, and I am so glad that Reddit was able to see what I wasn't. I am so deliriously happy in love with my husband. I don't even want to think about what would have happened had I not posted here. So thank you all again, and I hope this update is in some way satisfying. TL;DR: John had feelings for me for God knows how long, I was a dolt for not seeing it, I don't really spend time with him anymore because I'm now married and I am extremely grateful to this sub for opening my eyes and probably saving my relationship FINAL COMMENTS [deleted] Good for you OP. And wow good on the guy who wrote the top comment in that last thread, I think he nailed it. Reddits a pretty cool place sometimes OOP You mean the guy who wrote the post from my husband's point of view? Yeah, that one really got to me. ~ Tejas_Belle It takes a really big person to admit they're wrong and then remedy the situation. Congrats on the wedding!! OOP Thank you, you're sweet. I stole some electronics including old cellphones, a game console, and a blu-ray player to buy heroin. I cannot and will not justify these actions and fully accept them as my own and their consequences. I was caught and my family became aware of my addiction. It was hard to see my parents realize what was happening, but the hardest was seeing how heartbroken my 17-year-old little sister was. They dropped me off at a rehab center where I spent three months getting detoxed and sober. I did not hear from them while I was in there. I tried calling to let them know how I was, but I never received an answer. The day I got out, I went back home. My family there informed me that they would no longer be considering me a member of the family and that I was to leave the home and not contact any of them for any reason. I attempted to stay with other family, but when I contacted my grandparents I was told that my parents had called them and several others to tell them that if they kept in contact with me in any capacity, they would cut off contact with them as well. I was able to see how my sister was doing via my mothers Facebook posts, but after liking one, I was messaged and told that I am allowed to look at the posts, but all other family members will be blocking me and I am not to interact with the my mother’s posts. I was completely destroyed and left on the streets. I stayed in a homeless shelter and got a menial job, enough to get a rundown apartment, and slowly put my life together. I went through therapy to process the extreme grief I felt. I focused on work and did school online enough to finish my degree from when I dropped out at 21. I was able to secure myself a very good position several states away and moved there as soon as I could. Three years ago I met the woman who is now my wife. Her father went through a similar struggle with addiction and her family welcomed me with open arms. Last year we got married and three months ago we welcomed our son into the world. Of course, being a proud new dad, I posted my boy all over social media to show him off to the world. Since then, I’ve been inundated with calls and messages telling me that my parents want to meet my son. I have no plans to allow that. My family abandoned me at my lowest and actively worked to cut me off from any familial support I could have had. I am not owed forgiveness for my actions, but I can’t pretend that what they did was anything less than complete disownment of me at my most vulnerable. I told them, not very politely, that I do not consider them my real family and that they are to come nowhere near me, my wife, our son, or anyone related to us. I’ve been getting messages daily about how I “Never earned their love back” and am “cheating them out of having a son again” and thus I owe this to them, from my parents and others. I am not giving in, at all, nor do I ever plan to. AITAH? EDIT: There’s been a lot of replies along a broad spectrum of opinions and takes. I may not have replied to them all, but I did read them all. For now, I am stepping back. My wife and I have decided that we are going to be speaking with my parents via a video call and discussing the past five years and where everyone stands as of today to gauge where we all are and decide how to move forward. I’ll be taking everything I’ve read here into consideration in how I decide to approach this situation. I’ve seen a lot of people wanting updates- I will post an update on this when the dust has settled and I can say with some certainty what’s going to be happening. Thank you all for your words of kindness (and otherwise). Every one of them is appreciated. AITAH has no consensus bot, OOP received the majority of NTAs Relevant Comments OOP explains more about his drug addiction and how it affected the people in his life OOP:My time spent on heroin was mercifully short, less than a year. Until then, I had mainly gotten my fix from someone I was dating at the time. They lived with me and so they shared what they got with me in return. After we broke up I got desperate and sold almost everything I owned, and after losing my job at the time, I got desperate enough to steal. Until then, my family was not aware of my addiction because I tended to have a little bit of distance between my father (who was very much the “man in charge”) who kept whatever was happening in the house under strict control. I was most frequently in contact with my little sister via discord and texting. That isn’t to say that I did not love my family or feel affection for them, but that we did not see each other in person often enough for them to really grasp that I had a problem. There were other things that made our relationship hard before my addiction, though. My father specifically had always had a difficult relationship with me because I dropped out of school and came out as openly bisexual, which he had a severe issue with. He is a very strict traditionalist and did not approve of the fact I had been dating men as well as women. He also did not like that my pursuit for a career was in writing when his goal was for me to get an electrical engineering degree so I could take his business after graduation. Again, I am not inherently deserving of forgiveness from them, especially directly after rehab. But to actively throw me on the street and disown me, then go out of their way to ensure that NO ONE would even speak to me… that hurt, and it still hurts. I needed someone, anyone to be there because I wanted to get better and be better. I worked hard and did get better, but knowing that they didn’t want to see me even when I was at my best made it worse. And now they only want to be around me because I have something they want. They still don’t care about me as their family, or about my recovery and my success. Downvoted Commenter: So 5 years ago you were a raging addict, who traumatized your family. They were done with your abuse and left you to clean up your own mess. And now that you got your life together, they are the assholes? No honey. This is real life. You exhausted the emotional and financial resources of your family. It is your job to repair the relationships you destroyed, and they TAUGHT YOU THAT IN REHAB. OOP: Yes, they did teach me this in rehab, but I feel you’re misunderstanding what I’m asking here. I’m not asking if they’re assholes after what I did to them. I am not saying they owe me something I did not receive. They were fully in their rights to cut me off, even if it hurt me almost irreparably. That is on me. What I am saying is that they do not get to erase me from the family, actively working to ensure no one I am related to will even speak to me, for five years and then decide that they get to jump back into my life because they want access to my son. Commenter 1: Have your parents or any other members of your old family even apologized for totally shunning you? NTA. OOP: No. I have not heard from any of my relatives in the five years between then and now. They have blocked me on everything. My mother allows me to view her social media posts because I want to see how my sister is doing, that is all. Commenter 1: If the parents really want to meet your child, they will apologize. What about your sister? Any contact with her? OOP: No, my sister has not been allowed to have any social media since she was young and so she does not use it as an adult. I see events like her college graduation and birthday updates on my mother’s Facebook and that’s all. She has not reached out to me. OOP on if he is still not considered a part of the family if they wanted access to his son / the grandson OOP: We had one conversation, and in it I told them that they wanted me to stay away, and I did exactly what they asked. They made no indication up until then that they wanted me back in their lives. I do still hurt from that and I am still working on making peace with it. They have not made any indication that their feelings towards me have changed. Commenter 2: Honestly if they were intending to cut you out forever they should have anticipated what would happen if you were to ever have kids. You said you never tried to earn their forgiveness back. Did they expect you to grovel and try harder to get back into their graces or are they making excuses? OOP: If I know my father well enough he probably expected me to push back against his rejection to prove how much I wanted them. I didn’t do that. I was heartbroken and alone and too concerned with survival, and eventually I just went on without them. OOP on the possible reason why his parents wanted to meet their grandson OOP: I feel like they see my son as a do-over. The first one ended up wrong, so this is chance number two to get it right. Additional Information from OOP after reading the comments / responses OOP: I want to add some context here that I initially left out for the sake of brevity. My parents and I, especially my father, did have some strains in our relationship before all of this, but it was unrelated to my addiction. My father is an extremely strict traditionalist who had a very clear life path for his only son that included me getting an electrical engineering degree and taking his business. I had zero interest in that- I’ve always loved writing and wanted to pursue that, so when I got the chance in college, I switched to an English major to pursue professional writing along the lines of technical writing and copywriting. This made him extremely upset. It did not help that I am openly bisexual and was dating men and women when in college. When I came out, I expected some resistance (and did receive that) but his disappointment was mostly unspoken, even if still palpable. I dropped out of school and began working full-time before I finished my degree. The workload on top of my already poor mental health put more strain on me than I could handle at the time. Of course, this made him very upset as well, but he was holding out hope that I would turn out how he intended at some point. I dated a man who was using and I used with him to cope with the issues I was having. He let me use what he could get his hands on, and in return I worked and paid the bills for the apartment. I lost my job and was close to eviction when we broke up. Then I began selling my belongings and, in a desperate bid, stole from my family. I was caught after that single time stealing and that’s when my addiction came to light. Again - I offer no excuses for stealing. I made that choice and accept that they felt the need to cut me off, even if it took years to reach that point. But they went out of their way to ensure that I had no one, effectively abandoning me and erasing me from the lives of the entire family. They did this to me knowing I would have no one. The only reason they want back in my life now is because I have something they want - my son, their grandson. They don’t want to see me again because they love me, or because they care about my recovery and success. And that’s why this situation hurts me and infuriates me so much. Update: December 5, 2025 (15 days later) UPDATE: AITAH for telling my family they are never going to be part of me or my son’s life? A little bit back I posted a thread on this sub. I want to thank everyone for their words, both kind and unkind. I look back on that post and feel like I did not hit the mark in some areas for how I expressed myself and the situation, and so it was interpreted in wildly different ways by different people. I initially wanted to address those, but to be honest, I’m ready to leave this behind, so I’m not going to do that. The only thing I will add clarity to, since it came up several times- my family did not pay for my stay in rehab. I was making less than $20k per year and my employer only offered an HSA for health benefits, so I qualified for Medicaid and had been on that since I moved out of the house. Medicaid in my state pays for the cost of in-patient rehab, and this is how my treatment was funded. For the sake of brevity and so that I don’t dwell on it longer than I should, I will briefly run through some relevant context and a short summary what my father expressed to me during our conversation. To add some context that I think explains his mindset, I will give some of my father’s history here. He came from China to the US to attend college and fell in love with the country. My father hates China and communism. He saw America as a land where he could have the opportunity to thrive in ways he couldn’t in his home country, so he married an American woman and stayed here, starting his own business. My father’s dream was that one day, he would pass this business down to his son, then to his grandson, continually passed down as his legacy. He was very much a tiger parent and my mother, having always been very submissive, followed suit. I’d been told from a young age that this is what my future would be and my life was curated around it, down to what university I would attend and my major. All of this will give context to my father’s position. The call was just me, my wife, and my father. It was a long and awkward conversation, but here is the gist of it- My father regards my bisexuality and my decision to not finish college as direct actions of ungratefulness to his efforts in raising me and feels that I have not been thankful that he did not take action against me earlier. Me being bisexual still left room to marry a woman and have children, so he did not interfere with it. He could still teach me how to manage the business even if I needed to hire others to help with the physical labor involved with it, so he got past the fact that I dropped out of college. However, it was not the stealing that broke the camel’s back to him- it is the fact that I used drugs at all. He was upset that I had stolen from the house, but to him, it was ultimately inconsequential compared to me abusing a substance. The fact that I used drugs at all meant that I could not be trusted with his legacy, and since I could not contribute to the family legacy, it was necessary to cut me out of the family entirely to avoid the shame of having an addict among them. He made it clear that this is how he felt then and that his feelings have not changed, nor will they ever change, no matter how clean I stay or how successful I become, because I ruined his dream. Despite this, I owe him a debt of gratitude by leaving the family vacant of a son to pass his legacy down to. Now that I have a son of my own, there is potential my father’s legacy could be passed down to him. As someone who used drugs, this necessitates him and my mother stepping in to ensure my son is properly raised into the position I was to inherit. I did not get to speak to my mother to ask her about the messages she had sent me. The call ended pretty abruptly when my wife realized that it wasn’t a conversation that would go anywhere. I was in a bad spot for the weekend after that Friday night. I cannot express with words how thankful I am that my wife was there to help me stay sane. I am going to spend the rest of my life doing every possible thing I can to be as much of a rock for her as she is for me. Right now, most of that is in the form of taking on any and all housework in addition to doing my part to take care of the baby while her body recovers. As our son grows up, I’ll keep finding new ways to let her know how much I appreciate her. As for the future, this is what we’ve decided- On my part, I’m going to work a lot less. For those wondering, I ended up being a technical writer, and it’s a job I’m quite good at. It also pays for us to live very comfortably, even if I go well below a full-time work schedule. When I met my wife, I used work as my distraction. Marco Pierre White was correct when he said work is the best painkiller mankind has ever come up with. However, I don’t think this is a healthy way to cope now that I have a child. I’ve decided I’ll use the extra time off of work to attend an extra therapy session every week for more intensive treatment and to help develop some better coping mechanisms that don’t involve me working myself into an early grave. As for our son, we have decided that my parents will not be a part of his life for the foreseeable future. We aren’t sure what we will tell him, but as he grows up and we see more of his personality, we plan to speak with a counselor who has experience in child psychology to find a way to approach the subject that won’t be distressing or confusing for him. A lot of people mentioned the idea of me taking my wife’s name. We floated that for a bit, but ultimately we’ve decided that we will be choosing a new family name entirely. It feels like more of a fresh start for a new legacy. We aren’t sure which name we will go with yet, but we hope to have that done by the end of the year. And honestly, that’s pretty much it. There isn’t much else to report. I know this update will get a wide range of responses. Sorry to disappoint, but I will not be reading or responding to any of them. I know the man that I’ve become. I know I am a capable father and loving husband. I know I have a disease that puts me at a disadvantage when it comes to anyone’s trust or respect because of my choices in the past, and I know that despite them, I will continue to be the best man I can be for my family. And as much as I appreciate all the responses, I don’t need to hear strangers on Reddit praise and condemn me to know that it’s true. I’m going to log out of this account after posting this and I will not be logging back in. Thanks for reading. Top Comments Commenter 1: Your father sees you as an investment for his dreams and not as a person, when you did not gave the dividend he expected he got rid of the asset. Now that there is a new asset he wants to use his history as a shareholder to get the buying option to start over but only under the stipulation to be the CEO to make sure that this time there will be a nice payout for him… You see the way it goes? You do right to stop your investor… I mean father, and his whole family, from even knowing your child! He deserve better and you too! It is great that you has a wife that sees that with you and supports you so much! Your father will never see his role in all what happens. Be happy with the people that love you unconditionally and the people you love the same way, that’s the best life! Commenter 2: Your dad's a real clown shoe. In what universe did he think practically demanding your kid to raise just to make up for your drug-use upsetting HIS plans would work in his favor? Blocking your family's a good idea but you might want to prepare in case your parents won't take no contact for an answer and try some grandparents rights plan or something equal nonsense to get access. Commenter 3: Let me put it this way. Your father raised a son who took drugs, stole from family, had to go to rehab and only became successful once the said son was completely apart from that father. So he has some audacity to imply he has to make sure your son gets raised properly, when he is objectively the failure as a parent. I accidentally outed the lie, but why am I the bad guy here? NEW UPDATE MARKED WITH ---- Editor's note: made small edits for ease of readability Trigger Warnings: fabricated statements, possible mental health struggles, death of a loved one, grief, depression, domestic assault Mood Spoilers: sad RECAP Original Post (unddit): April 11, 2025 Usually a lurker, but something happened tonight that has me incredibly confused. Apologies in advance for the length. Backstory: I’m the eldest of 4 sisters. We’re stair stepped, 2 years apart. I’m Meg, 38, Jo is 36, Beth is 34, and Amy is 32. Our parents used to joke about how they kept trying for a boy but finally gave up after girl number 4. Not gonna lie, it hurt our feelings a little - especially Amy - but they stopped that and assured us they wouldn’t change anything. Every one us has at least 1 daughter. I am the only sister that has a son. At 17, he’s the eldest grandchild and I’m fairly certain he’s my dad’s favorite person in the world. They are best friends. It’s adorable. Ok now that you have the backstory/fam history, let’s talk about tonight. My son, who is VERY intelligent, and absolutely crushed high school, recently received his acceptance letter to a pretty prestigious university. Full ride. We are incredibly proud. My folks wanted to throw him a little congratulatory party, and tonight worked for all of our schedules (which is no small feat - 4 different families with 11 kids between them), so we all headed to the folks house for pizza and cake. At one point, Amy brought up that it is sibling appreciation day, and Mom said she wanted all of her girls to say what we appreciate about our sisters, and we go youngest to eldest - with most of the compliments going to me, as I was kind of a second mom to them. I told each of my sisters how much I loved them, among other things, and then finished my speech off saying something like “and I REALLY appreciate that we didn’t have any gross boys stinking up our house!” All of us but Beth and her husband laugh. Beth’s eyes got really big and her husband (Chase) looked at me like I was something he scraped off the bottom of his shoe. Suddenly, he says “that’s pretty f*cked up.” I said something like “Idk Chase, I’ve smelled you after your workouts - it’s pretty bad,” and he got even more mad and said “how could you talk about Tyler like that?” And Beth starts LOSING HER MIND, guys. She’s grabbing him by the arm and begging him to hush, saying they need to go home now, etc. So naturally I’m like “umm who is Tyler?” Well, friends. APPARENTLY Tyler is Beth’s twin that died during childbirth. And it made our folks and me so depressed that nobody is allowed to speak of him or reference him, EVER. Beth forbade him from ever mentioning to ANY family member. After Chase told us this, nobody said a word. It was so damn tense. Finally, I just kind of bluntly said, hi Mo “I’m not sure why, but Beth lied to you about this. I think you guys should talk about it, but I don’t want to hear anything else about this tonight, as we’re here to celebrate (my) son.” After that, Beth burst into tears and ran into her old bedroom, with Chase, Mom, and Jo following her. The party never fully recovered and they took off pretty shortly after that. I stayed behind to help clean, and so my dad and son could hang some more. While I’m doing the dishes, my mom scolded me pretty harshly about calling Beth a liar. IF THE BABY SHOE FITS, MOTHER. My dad said I wasn’t wrong, but I embarrassed Beth. What the hell was I supposed to do? I was getting chastised over a lie!! Absolutely not. Beth also texted me that I “f*cked her over,” and a text from Chase’s phone told me I was the actual liar sister and everyone knows that. Amy is on my side, but she and Beth always butted heads. Jo claims she’s neutral, but she also told me I “didn’t have to call her out like that.” What the hell else was I supposed to do? Just take the lashing? And why is everyone acting like me calling out, what I consider to be a pretty heavy lie, is worse than the lie itself? How do we resolve this situation? I love my sisters so damn much - they are my best friends - but this is so weird and so wrong to put on me. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: I can’t imagine any other response. I really can’t. Were you seriously expected to lie along with her? I think that is shocking. OOP: I have NO idea what she was expecting??? I have “lied” for her before. But saying she’s at my house while she’s really getting boudoir photos done for him is not the same as lying about a whole person who never existed??? It’s beyond bizarre. Commenter 2: I'm kind of impressed that after all of that she managed to convince her husband that you were the liar. Of course, if he still believes her he's dumb as a brick. I'd think there is proof enough on her birth certificate as it will state she was a single birth. OOP: I will say, Chase is not a dummy, and he’s typically not malicious. And although nobody really backed me up about this being a lie (at least not in front of me), I think it’s pretty obvious that I was telling the truth, as everyone else was obviously confused and dead silent in the moment. I have not responded to the texts, as I’m not looking to burn bridges. I’ve made many mistakes, and my sisters have graciously forgiven me. I’m just,..flummoxed. And a little hurt. Commenter 3: This is very weird. I’m confused at why your parents aren’t embarrassed by your sister’s behavior. Especially trying to keep up the lie afterwards and saying you’re lying. Is she mentally ok? Does she have a history of lying? OOP: We all lied as kids, but I assumed she grew out of it as an adult. We also all exhibited some attention seeking behavior, but again, age appropriate, especially for a family with 4 kids and 2 parents who worked full time. My parents are hippies and very much “live and let live,” kinda vibe. But this feels… icky to me. So I’m a little surprised they’re not more upset about it? Then again, they never “punished” us in front of each other, so they could be dealing with, or planning to deal with the situation behind the scenes. Either way, Beth is WAY too old to be making up dead sibling stories. Commenter 4: Your sister dug herself a weird hole, is now mad she has to dig her way out of it, and is placing that anger on you for accidentally handing her the shovel. If she wants to blame anyone for being caught in a lie she can look in the mirror. How do you fix it? Your sister has to pull her head out of her ass and apologize for putting you all in that position, and then you can think about apologizing for being “blunt” about it. (But tbh, I don’t feel you did anything wrong exactly here. You had no idea what was going on, why you were being accused of being a bad person, and literally just wanted the focus back on your son’s achievements. It’s not like you accidentally spilled a secret you were supposed to keep. Your sister created this entire mess and should probably explain to you guys why she did it) OOP: I appreciate your input and kind words! I don’t like drama, so I find it best to just kinda stop it in its tracks. And my son…we recently got an autism diagnosis (what was formerly referred to as Asperger’s), and it’s messed with his head a little. He’s always been so bad socially, and really struggled making friends. As a result, his cousins got the bulk of the attention. He was really proud of himself and I wanted him to remember this little get together because it was all about HIM for once. Commenter 5: Your sister is a freak weirdo. Making up a dead twin for what? Sympathy? Attention? She fucked up and everyone knows it. Why anyone would want to cover up her lie is beyond me. She made her bed. Let her deal with the repercussions of this outrageous lie. Question though. Did or have your parents tried to set the record straight with her idiot hubby or are they staying silent about this alleged twin baby that never existed? OOP: When I told Chase she was lying, nobody backed me up, but I believe it was kind of obvious bc nobody refuted my claims. That coupled with Beth frantically trying to get her husband to leave…Chase is smart. He can put 2&2 together. I mentioned in another comment that our parents never punished us (nor really got onto us) in front of each other. So I would like to think they’re handling things on that end behind the scenes, and trying to appeal to my dislike of drama and empathy to get me to forgive her. I don’t find the lie unforgivable. I think it’s bizarre and I don’t appreciate it, but I don’t think our relationship is over. I love her. I took her on her first date (took her and a boy to get ice cream and they held hands - we lied to our parents about that one). I helped take care of her when she was postpartum bc Chase had to work. She’s got my heart, ya know? Commenter 6: Just to be clear you do recognize this level of lie as a mental health disorder correct? While I am not a therapist this very much sounds like some strain of Munchhausens. Again not a therapist just therapy adjacent in training and work so I have some familiarity, so get her some professional help. This isn’t just a cry for help, this is a sign of a broken brain that requires professional help and maybe even medical interventions. OOP: I work in healthcare, albeit not directly in the mental health field, but I am a little familiar with various disorders. I actually do think she’s a hypochondriac. One of my nieces is ALWAYS coming down with something (they are not), or my sister definitely has Crohn’s disease (she doesn’t). She won’t drink milk if it’s within 3 days of the Best Buy date. Refuses bread pudding bc you use “old bread” to make them. Won’t eat brownies I baked from scratch the day before bc they’re old… So I know she’s got some issues. But hey, WE ALL HAVE ISSUES. I’m pretty emotionally closed off except to my spouse and children. Some people think that makes me a b-. I try not to be too judgmental bc I’m definitely not perfect, but I’m judging the f out of this. Update: April 12, 2025 (next day) Ok, I think we have some answers re: the events that occurred last night. I do want to tell everyone who took time to give advice or kind words, thank you. I honestly couldn’t read everything - I was (and am) exhausted. But I did get an idea of how I wanted to approach everything, thanks to the advice given. My post says it was removed, and I’m unsure why, so hopefully this one will stay. I’ll get to the update in a few. I just wanted to answer some FAQ/comments real quick: 1 - this is fake! I WISH IT WAS. I really wish my mind worked in a way where I could make things up like this. Alas, my imagination is lacking. 2 - your parents named you after Little Women? This is probably partially to blame for the “fake” comments. These are just placeholder names I used, as there are 4 sisters in that novel. My parents are hippies, and gave us some pretty noticeable names. If I used our real ones, on the off chance any of our friends read this, they’d know immediately this was our family. 3 - Beth is continuing to lie and Chase is believing it and your mom and Jo threw you under the bus too! Re: Chase, I think he knew I was being truthful. Also, I said the text came from his phone. I was actually thinking Beth sent it, as that’s not Chase’s vibe. About mom & Jo - they didn’t throw me under the bus. But I’ll go into more detail soon. 4 - Is it possible my mom had twins and I just forgot or didn’t know about the death? Absolutely not. I was at all of my sisters births. I don’t remember Jo’s, but I do remember Beth & Amy’s, and there were no multiples, no deaths, no funerals, no depression. 5 - The birth certificate will prove it! It sure would, yes. But I’m not about to try to strong arm my sister into showing her husband her birth certificate. 6 - Your sister is mentally ill, also the golden child, and you’re the scapegoat. I’m not about to say my sister is sick, but I do think she has some issues - as we all do. There’s no golden child and scapegoat in this family. My parents were and are really good about treating all of us fairly and equally. 7 - You could have/should have been more tactful/pulled her aside/not called her a liar. Had I known that “Tyler” was my dead brother, I never would’ve asked who he was. Chase and I tease each other a lot, and I honestly thought he was about to come out with some kind of funny joke, alá “deez nuts.” Re: my lack of tact? Idk, I think it’s pretty lacking in tact to make up a whole dead sibling. And really, facts are facts. She lied, and that’s that. The night was about my son, so I squashed the issue and chose to move forward, hoping to end the conversation with as little drama as possible. Ok so now up to the update: After a night of barely sleeping and my blood pressure dangerously high, I called my mom this morning fully ready to let out an emotionally charged tirade about how I feel they unfairly threw me under the bus and took Beth’s side when she OBJECTIVELY did the worse thing My mom answered the phone apologizing and asked me to just listen. When she and Jo followed Beth & Chase to Beth’s room, Mom did tell Chase that Tyler was not real, and this is an issue between her and Chase, and they should probably leave, because she didn’t want the evening ruined. She did “get onto me,” but it was mostly out of sympathy and empathy for Beth, and she recognized it wasn’t ok. She apologized for that. She spoke with Chase this morning, and Beth (who is the one who sent me the text from Chase’s phone) finally came clean early this morning, after HOURS of denying the lie. Something I didn’t mention, as I didn’t feel it was pertinent to the story, is Beth’s eldest daughter (Madison) isn’t Chase’s biological daughter. He’s been around since Madison was 2. Also kind of pertinent, is that Chase is a first responder. He loves to be a hero. And he’s very good in that role. He met Beth doing victims advocacy. And as such, I believe they both view him as “saving,” Beth. This has a long been speculated, but it’s not exactly our place to say anything. And we all love Chase. He is an amazing person. And Beth is no dummy. She picked up on Chase’s hero complex immediately. It appears that, in an effort to make herself look more….sympathetic? Vulnerable? Broken? She lied about having a twin brother that died in childbirth. I guess being in an abusive relationship and having a small child just wasn’t enough?? She did not have to do that. They’ve been together 10 years now, and not once did she come clean. To me that proves a clear pattern of deceit and manipulation. However, I’m not going to speculate on her mental health problems or reasonings for not coming clean. That is for her and her husband to deal with. Neither one of them have called or texted me to apologize, and I’m honestly unsure if they will. Beth is more of the rug sweeping type, while I’m a confront issues head on type. I will not be cutting my sister off for this, though. I love her, and at the end of the day I just want her to be happy and healthy. I do hope that this whole issue will cause her to rethink some of her life choices and maybe she can get some therapy. I think we could all use therapy, tbh. That’s where we are right now. My mom did not offer any information about how Beth and Chase are doing, and I did not ask. It’s not my business. I have not heard from Jo, but Amy and I have been texting all morning and she is being my best good friend right now and providing a lot of support. Hopefully we can all move forward and grow together in the future. Thanks again for the support you all have sent my way. Top Comments Commenter 1: I am glad your mother apologized, but your sister really owes you - and the entire family - an apology. This was a really selfish and weird thing to do. She also owes Chase and his family an apology. I hope she gets some help for this. Good luck. Commenter 2: Your sister could probably benefit from therapy. I will never understand why people think it’s a good idea to lie about something so easily disproven. Don’t lie about anything and you won’t have situations blow up like this. I hope she comes to her senses and apologizes to you. Commenter 3: I think your family needs to do a sit down with your sister because this isn't normal behavior at all. She lied for 10 YEARS ABOUT A DEAD BROTHER! Y'all need to call this behavior out since she's wayyyy too old to be acting like this. And doing nothing is showing her that you guys will accept similar or the same type of behavior in the future. Commenter 4: Welp this is why she continues to do this nonsense at her big ass age. No one holds her accountable. You can’t move forward and grow together if people don’t take accountability. Your entire family enables her in the worst way ----NEW UPDATE---- Final Update: September 21, 2025 (five months later) TW: death of a loved one, grief, depression, divorce Well. A lot has happened in the past months. I read all your comments. Multiple times. And I heard you. I faced some very hard truths about my family and our dynamics. But mostly I grieved. About a month after I made my original post, my dad passed away. It was very unexpected. Massive stroke. The worst part was mom was out of town, so my dad died alone. My son talked to him that same day. They made plans for the next week. And then…my dad was gone. It’s been a very hard few months. I started therapy mostly to deal with navigating life without dad, but my therapist made a lot of good points about our family dynamic. Mostly that I was parentified and a people pleaser. That “keeping the peace” comes at a price. And that price was my needs being put on the back burner. And as a result I keep people at an arms length bc of this. And I’ll be damned if she wasn’t right. So let’s rewind a little. During the week or so after dad died, mom was lost (they’ve been married over 40 years, so no surprise there), and as the eldest sibling, I stepped up big time. Jo and I already knew a little about our parents end of life wishes, and we chose to go forward with cremation. Mom agreed (this is her wish as well), as did Amy. Guess who didn’t? If you guessed Beth…you’d be right. She just had a complete meltdown, wailing over how she couldn’t stand the thought and will NOT allow it, and blah blah blah. This is probably the first instance of me shutting her ass down. I told her, in NO uncertain terms, that this wasn’t her choice, it was our father’s preference, and it was happening regardless. Next, she was wandering thru the house, trying to pick out shit she wanted, before mom had even given us her blessing. When she started, mom asked her to please stop, let her sort some stuff first, and then she will give a yes or no. When Beth asked what she needed to “sort out,” Mom mentioned dad’s watch collection. There was one specifically for my son, and when Beth inquired as to which one, mom refused to answer. Beth insisted that wasn’t fair, she should have first pick, blah blah blah. Mom and Jo apparently shut that shit down with a quickness. I wasn’t there, but my son is now wearing the first “luxury” watch, my dad ever bought, and he is so proud. Don’t worry though, - all the grands have something special. Next, she got absolutely plastered at his end of life ceremony, went around wailing and making literally the whole thing about her grief and how her wishes weren’t respected, and before I could snap (and believe me, I was THIS CLOSE), Chase dragged her ass out of venue and I’m not sure what happened, but when they got home, police were called, Beth was arrested, and my niece ended up with my mom for the night. My BIL did have some bruises to back him up. Despite Beth calling us…nobody bailed her ass out. We are just DONE with it. She did get released on her own recognizance, and only ended up with some community service and a fine. Chase was more than willing to do therapy with her, but she started drinking even more, and as result is being more aggressive with both him and the kids. There was another situation, and long story short, Chase is divorcing her and petitioning for full custody. He has asked us to write letters on his behalf, and I believe all of us are going to do so. I don’t know what is going on with my sister, but she is on a downward spiral and it’s so sad to see. She refuses to speak with anyone, and I’m just done trying. I’d already decided to cut her off after the bullshit at dad’s end of life ceremony, but this solidified it. I won’t be updating again. I’m washing my hands of all of this. I hope my sister gets help, but it’ll take a lot of work, and she’s never been one to want to put in the work. I’m putting myself first, for ONCE, and concentrating on my children, my husband, and MYSELF. Thanks for listening to me vent. Y’all are almost as good as therapy. My husband wanted a divorce, until he lost his job..am I the asshole to follow through with filing?
My husband 34 male and I 38 female have been married for 6 years together for 9. We have had our ups and downs but the biggest down is how he speaks to me. I just had our son 1 year ago. When I was 10 months postpartum he was telling ne I am fat and lazy and all I do is take care of the baby and work. As I still had baby weight on navigating new routines, work and caring for our baby AND 4 other children while working 40hrs a week. On my birthday he demanded I not leave the house or he would divorce me. Just so happened my daughter had an appointment at UCLA for her teeth the morning of my birthday, so I took her. Needless to say he didnt even say hello to me and slept in his game room. He has been sleeping there since. Its been 2 months. He told everyone he was divorcing me, spoke to an attorney and everything before even telling me he wanted a divorce. He told me I was not the prize, im almost 40 and have 4 kids 3 who are minors. He said hes the prize, hes in his prime and makes good money and any women would love to be in my shoes and take care of his kids. He even went as far as inviting his baby mother into the house to visit while I was out. Fast forward he looses his job and telling me to wait to move. He then starts talking nicer to me and acting different then before. I told him I was still moving out and going forward with seperating because his actions did not align with someone who wanted to be with me. It feels more like im his only option at the moment. Now hes going around saying I am a gold digger and leave as soon as he looses his job. Hes saying he wanted to try to make it work but I am the one choosing to leave to all his family and friends. So am I the asshole for following through with what he initiated even after he lost his job? submitted by /u/Upset-Quit6038 to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

$1 million a year to only wear women’s white pumps for shoes. 4-inch heel.
Pretty simple: One million a year, paid on the 365th day. The only shoes that you can put on your feet for the year are these classic, white pumps. Everything else about your appearance remains up to you. Shoes are required in every public building. Going to work? Heels. Gym? Heels. Traveling? Heels. Hiking? Heels. Golfing?Heels. If you go to a friend’s house, you may take them off at the door. You may not cover the heels with JNCO jeans or other coverings. You could do one year, ten years, the rest of your life. The only people you can tell about the financial part are your spouse and blood relatives. Anyone else, you only say these word: “these are my preferred shoes.” Yes, you can quit your job, travel the world, buy a few homes, but you’ll be doing it all in white, 4-inch pumps. Never leave your house as a millionaire? Congratulations, you never have to wear the heels and you can still collect the cash. Pain? Foot problems? Too bad. Use the cash for physical therapy or massages. How long would you do it? Assume all public indoor spaces are “no shoes, no shirt, no service.” submitted by /u/TappyMauvendaise to r/hypotheticalsituation [link] [comments]

My [28F] husband [36M] passed away, and now his "best friend" [33F] is trying to control his services
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/angrywidow My [28F] husband [36M] passed away, and now his "best friend" [33F] is trying to control his services Thanks to u/PlantQueen1912 for suggesting this BoRU TRIGGER WARNING: Loss of a loved one, obsessive behavior, mental health crisis Original Post March 14, 2015 I'll try to make this brief. My husband, Jonah, passed away unexpectedly a month ago from a stroke. I don't want to get specific about that part, it's the worst pain I've ever felt in my entire life, and I'm still not sure how I'm ever going to move on. We were married for 5 years, together for 7. The past 2 years we've been trying for a baby, but were just getting to the point of considering IVF when he died. Jonah had a close friend in high school named Marjorie. Marjorie also ended up going to the same university as he did, and they spent a lot of time together during those college years. Jonah said that he liked Marjorie's company, but never felt anything beyond friendship with her -- which I totally believe. Jonah dated other women during that period, but told me that several times Marjorie hinted that she wanted him to ask her out. She also "joked" about wanting him to be her "plan B" in case she didn't meet someone and get married by 30. By the time I'd started dating Jonah, he had moved a couple hours away from his hometown (and Marjorie). Despite this, Marjorie immediately began finding excuses to come to our town and "hang out" -- which usually involved her encouraging us to go drinking, and then her passing out on the couch at Jonah's apartment. I didn't mind her for the most part, but she had a habit of saying things like, "you know you ruined our marriage pact, haha!" and pointing out all the things that she knew about him (like what he took in his coffee, his favorite bands, etc). Over the course of our relationship, and especially after we got married, Jonah definitely put some distance into his relationship with Marjorie. He confided in me that he felt he had "outgrown her" and that they really had little in common anymore. He stopped responding to her invitations to hang out as often, though he would occasionally call to catch up out of guilt (especially when she would text him or leave messages saying she was "so sad he was ignoring her" and the like). But now he's gone. I had him cremated, like he wanted. We haven't done the memorial service yet -- it was too hard for me to even imagine the first couple of weeks, and I also wanted to give time for some out-of-state people to make travel plans. The memorial is this weekend. However, two weeks ago, I received an email from Marjorie -- sent to around sixty people, including Jonah's family -- saying that she was holding a memorial service for Jonah in the town where they grew up (the day before his memorial here). I was completely blown away, seeing as she hadn't mentioned anything to me or even attempted to call. Along with the details, the email said that she was "planning the memorial in light of the fact that no other service had yet been held in his memory, and he deserved to be laid to rest with honor". For the record, she was invited to the memorial which I've been planning, and knew it was happening. I called her, of course, and told her that while I appreciated her willingness to help with Jonah's goodbye, I was already planning a service for him that would involve all of his family and friends. She immediately went on the defensive, and said that she had "only started to plan a service when she realized I wasn't willing to do it in a timely manner". I told her that the timing wasn't her choice to make, but that if she wanted to have a memorial of some kind, to please just add on the invitation that his "official" memorial was going to be held this weekend. She said fine. I sent a message to all of Jonah's invited friends/family to make sure that they knew the real service with both of our families was going to be here, and then just washed my hands of the whole thing. This week I received a message on facebook from Jonah's cousin, saying that Marjorie (who has apparently blocked me on facebook) created an "event" for Jonah's "official" memorial service (her memorial) and invited everyone she possibly could. I've been getting blown up with emails asking which day the memorial is, and where. I'm honestly furious -- I don't have the emotional energy to deal with this. I ended up putting a post up on my wall, reiterating the date of his service here, and asking people to please share it. Thankfully I think the older members of the family don't use facebook or email very often, so most of them haven't been confused, but a lot of people now think that Marjorie's service is the real one. I called Marjorie again, asking her to add an addendum to her event saying that his actual memorial was going to be here. She told me that "Jonah would have wanted it this way" and that "if I couldn't appreciate her efforts, I wasn't invited to say goodbye to Jonah." I told her that was fine, seeing as I'd already said goodbye to Jonah when I held him as he died. She hung up. Apparently she's now spreading information to her mutual friends with Jonah, saying that he was planning on leaving me because I wasn't able to conceive. She also said that we had approached her to carry a baby for us -- all absolute lies. His cousin sent me a screenshot of a text where she said that "Jonah always thought we would have the cutest baby together" and that "AngryWidow doesn't understand how much he wants children". I'm at a loss as to what to do. I don't care what she says about me, but she's now tarnishing my husband's memory -- especially saying that he wanted to divorce. Jonah would never have left me, and anyone that knows him at all knows that we were committed to each other above all else. I need to figure out how to tell this woman to fuck off without encouraging her to spread more lies. And I also want to just forget the whole thing and crawl in bed and never get up again. Help me, please. tl;dr: My husband's former "best friend" is trying to plan his entire memorial service and is tarnishing his memory. How do I get her to stop? TOP COMMENT [deleted] I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine the pain you must be in right now. Marjorie sounds completely fucking insane and malicious. If I were in your shoes I'd be very tempted to go scorched earth on her ass, but that wouldn't be the most constructive approach here. So here's what I'd do instead: Send an email to all of the guests you've invited to attend the actual memorial service stating, "Just to reiterate, the service will be held at [location] on [date]." Do not mention Marjorie, her lies, or the second service. Contact the funeral home per /u/ThomasBeckett's suggestion and see what can be done to pull the plug on Marjorie's service. Delete and block this woman on all forms of social media, email, your phone, everywhere. UNLESS AND UNTIL somebody comes to you asking about Marjorie's lies, resist the urge to set the record straight. If you try to publicly address her claims on Facebook or elsewhere, it will almost certainly get back to her and she'll be even more fueled by the attention and the knowledge that she's getting under your skin. Cut off her supply by ignoring her. If she crosses the line into character assassination against you, contact legal aid. Content yourself with the knowledge that if any of Jonah's and Marjorie's mutual friends have half a brain, they'll understand she's out of her fucking mind or at least being outrageously inappropriate. EDIT: Almost forgot! Do you have a picture of Marjorie? Get one, and deputize someone at the real memorial service to guard the door and refuse her entry should she show up. Update 1 March 16, 2015 (2 days later) I apologize for not updating sooner, but a lot happened the last couple of days. Thank you to everyone who offered help and advice. For those that offered monetary assistance, Jonah and I were in a stable position financially -- I'm going to be comfortable until I decide to go back to work. Your willingness to help was deeply appreciated, however, and I'm truly bowled over by your kindness. I took the advice of the majority of comments, and called the chapel where Marjorie was planning her service. I spoke with the pastor, who immediately told me that he had been trying to get in touch with me regarding the service -- apparently both Jonah and Marjorie had grown up in that church (I am not religious, and neither was Jonah as an adult). My voicemail has been flooded, so it's definitely plausible that I overlooked his call. He immediately expressed how sorry he was to hear of Jonah's loss, and said he had received my contact info from Jonah's great-aunt who still attends there. He said he was surprised when Marjorie asked to have a service for Jonah, but she had claimed that Jonah and I were separated and I didn't want to be involved. He had been trying to follow up with me, but obviously that didn't happen. He was very apologetic, and said that we could cancel the service, or move forward in any way that felt right to me. He said that he knew the church members would appreciate the service, since many of them remembered Jonah as a boy, but obviously Marjorie would no longer have a role. I agreed that the service could go forward. He called to speak with Marjorie after our conversation, and informed her that she was no longer welcome to participate in the organization of the service after her behavior. He wouldn't tell me all that she said, but says she was distraught, and he recommended some mental health/spiritual services to her that he hopes she accepts. She apparently apologized for lying, and asked to speak with me -- but I declined. I feel bad if she's truly contrite, but I just have too much on my plate right now. We had two beautiful services for my husband -- first the one at his hometown church, and then the non-religious one that I planned. Everyone that came wanted to honor Jonah, and that's all that really matters. I was told a dozen stories about him that I'd never heard before, and I laughed so hard I cried, then cried some more. My cousin was on the lookout for Marjorie, and I honestly didn't think about her the whole weekend. She turned up for the first service, and the pastor ended up speaking with her (unbeknownst to me). My cousin says he was sympathetic but firm, and told her that her presence there would be inappropriate. Surprisingly, she left without fuss. I'm still not sure this situation is entirely resolved, but I got to lay my husband to rest in the way he deserved, and that's the most important thing to me right now. Thanks everyone for your support. tl;dr: Called the chapel, spoke with Marjorie, and had two wonderful services for my husband. [Edit 1]. I debated whether or not to even mention this, but this community has been so awesome I thought I might as well -- I realized this weekend that I'd missed my period, and I'm usually like clockwork. It could just be stress, but I'm going to take a test later. Can't decide if I'm incredibly hopeful or absolutely terrified. [Edit 2]. Not pregnant. It was a long shot. Thanks for your support. RELEVANT COMMENTS pienoceros I'm glad the pastor is such an awesome, compassionate person and that you were able to memorialize your husband with people who cared about him. OOP I definitely expressed my heartfelt appreciation to him. I tend to be uncomfortable in religious settings, which is why I immediately told him that I'm not religious, but I was really moved when he said, "That part doesn't matter right now. You loved your husband, and there is always a place for love here." I teared up, I admit. Update 2 July 26, 2015 (4 months later) I'm not sure if anyone will remember this post, but I thought I would update since it's been a few months. I haven't been checking my inbox, and I'm sort of amazed I remembered the password at all, but I appreciate all of you who sent encouraging messages. It means a great deal to me. It's been around five months since Jonah died, and honestly it still feels like I'm waking up and living the same day over and over again. I'm in therapy, but the feeling of grief has not subsided whatsoever. Everything reminds me of Jonah and I still feel like half of me is gone. I'm considering moving out of the country, or at least to a different state, but I also feel like a piece of Jonah is here in the house where we lived. Even worse, Marjorie has still not disappeared. I deleted my social media a couple of months ago in an attempt to simplify my life, but my cousin, who also knows Marjorie, let me know that she has been recently posting photos of herself on Facebook -- with Jonah. Some were from several years ago, but she was saying things like "I still miss my man every day" and "I can't wait until Jonah's baby arrives". She is apparently pregnant and claiming that the baby is my husband's. She has also photoshopped his face onto several photos -- some on another shirtless male posing semi-suggestively with her. The photoshopping is pretty good, but it's obviously not my husband's body. People have been saying things like "Congratulations, we know you'll be a great mother to Jonah's child" (nobody I knew, thankfully). It honestly made me feel sick, and I went and laid in bed pretty much all day. I hate that she is getting to me like this, but I can't stand the thought that she's claiming my husband was unfaithful to me, and that people are believing it. One bright note is Marjorie's brother, who also knew Jonah. On one of her recent posts, he commented, "WTF Marjorie? I spoke to Jonah like two weeks before he died and he said he was trying for a baby with angrywidow...you guys were just friends...this is fucked up and you know it". The post was deleted a couple of hours later. I don't know what to do anymore. I don't have the energy to battle with this woman, but I'm infuriated and hurt by this blatantly disrespectful pack of lies that she's spreading. My cousin called her and asked that she remove the photos, but she apparently said that "AngryWidow can go to hell, she just doesn't want to accept that Jonah wanted a baby with me more, and she couldn't give him one". I'm lost, guys. What can I do about this? It seems like all I can do is sit and watch this crazy woman try to convince Jonah's friends and family that he never loved me. Update: I just spoke with Marjorie's brother, who called to tell me that Marjorie is NOT pregnant, but seems to truly believe that she is. He asked her how far long she is, and she said five months, but she is still completely flat. He isn't sure if she's lying, or she actually believes she's having a child with my husband. He asked her when they conceived, and she mentioned a date that he knew we had been on vacation. tl:dr The troubles with Marjorie continue. Final update Aug 1, 2015 (2 weeks after the last update) A lot has happened since my last update. Hopefully this will be the end of the story. Marjorie's brother became very concerned after speaking to me, and apparently questioned Marjorie extensively about her behaviour. She continued to claim that she was pregnant with Jonah's baby, and that they had had a lengthy affair -- but the details didn't add up (the brother knew Jonah pretty well, and was generally aware of his work schedule, etc). She said they were meeting at a hotel at lunchtime three days a week, but he knew that Jonah came home for lunch with me every day. Stuff like that. He went home late that night to sleep on it. After he went home, Marjorie came over to see me at 3AM. She started screaming at me to come outside, saying that I had ruined her relationship with Jonah, and how happy they were before me, etc etc. I called the police and her brother, who both arrived around the same time. She pushed the police officer who tried to ask her what was going on, and was immediately arrested. I felt bad for her brother, but he just apologised to me repeatedly. Marjorie yelled expletives and tried to demand special treatment because the police were apparently "hurting her baby" by keeping her in the car. I gave a statement, and they left. Not exactly sure what happened after, but her brother says she is now under psychiatric evaluation, and is apparently struggling with a mental disorder that he wouldn't name (she has apparently not taken her meds in two years). I didn't ask for details, but it seems she is going to get some help. I'm not pressing any sort of charges. Her brother also linked me to his post on social media, where he made it very clear that Marjorie has been having some difficulties, and absolutely none of what she said about Jonah is true. I'm glad this seems to be over, but I've decided I need a fresh start no matter what. I'm looking for a job out of state, and I'll be doing my best to leave my life with Jonah behind. Thank you all for your help and encouragement. tl;dr: Marjorie is getting psychiatric help, and I'm moving away to start my life over. AITA for not letting a bleeding women in my house at 3am?
So I own a bulldog who’s is great at alerting me so noises at my door. My wife and I went to bed at around 11pm. I live downtown Salt Lake City. I wouldn’t call it a bad neighborhood compared to some large cities I’ve lived in, but there is more crime then any other part of salt lake. While fast asleep my dog starts going nuts. I get up grab my flashlight amd head to the front door. Someone is pounding furiously. I look through the peep hole and see a young women. First thing that flashes through my mind is what if someone’s right around the corner and jumps out when I open the door? I ask her what she would like and she just keeps demanding I open the door. This makes me more nervous. She starts saying if I can’t open the door then turn off the porch light. Well that didn’t help. At this point I tell her I’m calling the police. She keeps looking out towards the entrance to my property and keeps asking me to open the door. The police show up and very nicely not aggressive in any way take her with them. When I open the door there is blood all over my porch. And while the police are walking her across the gravel parking lot I notice she’s not wearing shoes and over hear she is 16 years old. I felt honestly bad that I didn’t open the door and let her in to wait for the police. AITA submitted by /u/gutbomber508 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
