It’s impossible to sit long without getting back/rib pain. I work remote which makes it tough. I can’t even sit or lay on my own couch anymore because it’s so uncomfortable it’s hard to breathe. I am still in shock. I felt a flare coming on 2 days ago in the evening. I immediately put an ice pack on the area and repeated it all day. I did this the next day, too. Also did a bunch of other things (2-3 litres of water, 120mg zinc, 40% zinc cream, ibuprofen, no sugar, etc.). This morning, I checked the surface of my boil and saw a large yellow spot. Usually, it takes me a week and lots of painful hot baths with Epsom salts to even get to that point. It took a day and a half to get it to come to a head. Not to mention, I wasn’t in excruciating pain like I usually am when it comes to a head. Y’know, as the boil progresses, it usually hurts more and more and reaches a climax, then boom it opens in relief. I couldn’t even feel it because the ice pack had numbed the area. Maybe that doesn’t sound like a big deal to you, but as someone who has experienced “electric-shock” type of pain as my boil progresses, it’s a huge leap for me. I saw someone on here say that when the boil is hard, it’s really inflamed and blocks the pus from coming to the surface. Using a cold compress reduces inflammation, allowing the pus to drain more quickly. Although heat promotes drainage, it also increases inflammation. Heat should be used during the later stages of the boil. I think attacking with heat straight away is a mistake many people make with HS. So next time you feel a flare coming on, 1. Catch it early and 2. Try a cold compress Just wanted to share, hope this helps someone! This morning my kid (4yo) was super dysregulated for whatever reason. Meltdowns over nothing, seemed on the edge of tears for the rest of the time, completely not typical behaviour for him. When he was having his third uncontrollable cry of the morning, this one involving bubbles in the chocolate milk, I remembered a video I saw a few days ago and grabbed a bag of frozen peas and put it on his neck. He calmed down in SECONDS! Seconds. First he was full of sadness and rage, next his little body melted and he collapsed to lie on my lap while I held the frozen peas there for maybe 30 seconds. Then we had a quiet sit and a snack and he’s been completely fine for the rest of the day. Apparently this triggers the mammalian dive reflex and basically forces the nervous system to chill the fuck out because panicking will get us drowned. The parasympathetic nervous system gets activated and heart rate and breathing will slow down. I saw a video about it a few days ago and thought it’s probably not that simple but I’ll try it, and holy shit it was actually magic! So next time your RSD is threatening to ruin your day, put something cold on the back and sides of your neck! My local Kroger had their ice packs on sale. I felt like they’d fit perfectly in my hopper 12. Took a risk, and man do they fit great. I’m a little obsessed with trying to do iceless cooler setups. I’m not sure if I saw it here on Reddit or in a Facebook group, but someone posted a photo of two 1 lb Pelican ice blocks inside a Yeti Roadie 15. They looked a little loose on the sides, so I decided to try the 2 lb Pelican block instead, since it’s about half an inch wider than the 1 lb Yeti Ice. Just got it in, and I’m honestly impressed. It fits perfectly side to side with zero wiggle. There’s still about 3 inches of empty space in the back, but it’s by far the best-fitting ice pack I’ve tried in this cooler. I added a photo so you can see what I mean. Before this, I was always using a 4 lb Yeti Ice, but the thing is massive. It takes up so much space that the Roadie 15 basically turns into a 5 or 6 can cooler instead of holding 10 or more. So for someone like me who uses ice packs 95 percent of the time and rarely ever uses actual ice, finding something that fits right makes a huge difference. If this 2 lb Pelican was just about 3 inches longer—maybe a 2.7 or even a 3 lb version—it would fill the entire bottom and be pretty much perfect. I commute monthly quite a long way into a food desert. I take all of my own food with me so I don’t have to eat Walmart trash all week (the only “grocery store” in the area). The flexible, bag-type ice packs seem to work the best as far as keeping things cold, but they inevitably leak out their nasty, cold slime and are shot after a few uses. Rigid packs are much sturdier, but they suck at absorbing heat and barely keep things cool unless I fill half the cooler with them. Surely somebody makes good quality ice packs that actually keep things cold without leaving a nasty mess. Help me! UPDATE: Wow, thanks for all of the responses. I didn’t expect so many options. And as much as I appreciate the DIY spirit some have expressed, I was really looking for a BIFL product recommendation for ice blocks that would a) efficiently transfer heat and b) save cooler space. I have numerous coolers, both hard and soft side, so the suggestions to get a bigger/better/electric cooler are not really the goal. That being said, after reading through all the comments and doing some research, I think the top three BIFL cooler ice pack recommendations are…. (drumroll, please) Chattanooga ColPac - The only reason I won’t be buying these highly recommended ice packs is to avoid another online merchant login, but they look excellent. ENGEL Ice - I may end up buying these for camping/road trips and I especially like that they have both a cooler variety rated for 32° F as well as a freezer variety rated for 5° F. That’s awesome and exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. However! After looking at all of them, weighing cost and space savings and overall ratings, I am going to first try… (another drumroll, please) Cooler Shock ice packs - These come in a huge range of sizes, have excellent online ratings and seem to be pretty tough compared to most. The size I want are sold in lots of 5, so for the same price as an ENGEL, I can have 5 that I swap out in the freezer while using others. Thanks y’all for the support! If you’re wondering if this is legal- it is where I live. Idk what more I can tell you. If you’re telling me to move, I completely agree and I am moving when the time comes. If you’re telling me to get a space heater or heated blanket- I have them both. If you’re telling me about the law of the minimum and maximum temperature- I know about all of that. The thermostat is in a warm place and the living area is not warm. This hack adjusts the temp a few degrees…enough to make the room just right. I’m not freezing to death, it’s just uncomfortable. There are people in this world that are freezing with a locked thermostat. This is for them. Apparently people in offices and classrooms too. Oh, and for everyone saying I need to dress like it’s winter- I have a minor circulation condition that makes my hands and feet impressively cold. I dress like it’s below zero all year round to try to keep my hands warm and not as cracked as they get from the cold.
