RE:Spec me a new PC desk
A lot of people get a worktop from IKEA and pop that on top of 2 of their Alex chests of drawers. It's a pretty good idea. Nice and sturdy and you can choose different woods/veneers for the worktop

IKEA desk hack or Electric Standing Desk - What’s your opinion?
This is something I’m really stuck on and unsure which to go for. I have had multiple desks in the last 4 years but now want to have a long term desk - I love both ideas - I would still use the Alex drawers regardless but unsure whether to go for standing desk or the ikea desk hack.. what would be your opinion? Anyone got experience of either desk? submitted by /u/info_me1 to r/desksetup [link] [comments]

Alex Alternatives
Hi all, looking to build my dream desk which will consist of a solid wood countertop and 2 drawer units either side. The only problem is IKEA UK no longer sells the Alex drawers in black. The drawers need to be as deep as the Alex and ideally as sturdy as them. Anyone got any alternatives? They don’t have to look the same as the Alex but they do need to be black. Thank you! 🙏🏼 submitted by /u/CapitalLDN to r/ikeaPCstations [link] [comments]

Anyway to use the entire Alex drawer?
I've just entered the gridfinity rabbit hole... However, I'm using ikea's Alex full drawer set but 3x14 grids are wasted due to drawer design constraints. Is there any reliable way to extend the drawers to utilise full capacity. Thanks submitted by /u/jackrabbit-199 to r/gridfinity [link] [comments]

A couple of questions on the classic Alex + Karlby desk hack
(Not my picture, grabbed from Google for reference) So I'm just starting to build my new office, and the plan is to use the classic Alex drawer + Karlby desk hack. I've used this in the past and it turned out great. But there's a few differences in how I'm doing it this time and I want to ask for feedback before I potentially damage some of the parts. So first of all, I'm only using one Alex drawer on the left side. The plan is to use two Olov legs on right side of the desk, and enforce with one or two more legs along the back to hopefully stop any sagging. The Karlby countertop will be a 246x3.8 cm (96" wide) in size. So question #1 is, do you think the two feet along the back + two feet on the right side of the desk will be enough to support such a wide countertop? And question #2, I'm trying to get away with not screwing the Alex drawer to the desk. Instead my plan is to place something non-slip in-between the countertop and the drawer to hopefully stop everything from sliding. Potentially a rubber sheet from the local hardware store. Good idea? Overkill? Any easier ideas that won't damage the pieces in case I want to re-use them for something else in the future? submitted by /u/ILoveBurgersMost to r/ikeahacks [link] [comments]

Vanity Tables from ikea
Hey guys, I really want to buy a new vanity desk. I am planning to make a DIY desk from ikea. I already have 2 Alex drawers, so I’m debating whether I should get a table top with glass ontop shown in the first pic or if I should get the komplement set from ikea which is shown on the 2nd pic. My only concern is that I don’t know if it will be assturdy as the first option because I am still in college and I usually do my assignments on my desk. I’m doing a DIY desk from ikea cuz ya girl is on a budget and I need to find cheaper mirrors as well! But yeah, I feel like getting a new desk would compliment my room a lot better. This is going to be my first time owning a vanity desk so I also wanna know which would be cuter. By the way, these pics are from Pinterest! submitted by /u/EyeOld231 to r/makeuporganization [link] [comments]

I built an Ikea desk using the KARLBY tabletop and ALEX drawers!
I found some inspiration browsing on reddit, and I really liked the L shaped design. I first designed the desk in blender to get a feel for the size so I could decide on which KARLBY to go with. There aren't any specific tutorials for building this specific desk, so I decided to document / vlog the build. Check out my YouTube video about it! More detailed instructions are in the description!! submitted by /u/tkauf32 to r/ikeahacks [link] [comments]

Daughter's Dream Room Makeover
For my daughter’s birthday, she wanted a room makeover, and I had a $600 budget to make it happen. I built her a loft bed using leftover 2x4s, only needing to buy a couple of 2x10s for the sides and some melamine shelves for the desk. I used shelf brackets and a $100 Amazon drawer unit (an IKEA Alex dupe) for support. Total cost? Less than $200—thanks to already having a mattress! I also grabbed a closet system for $130 on Amazon and some motion-sensor LED COB lights for $15 from AliExpress. With some budget left, I splurged on a smart TV/monitor and a budget-friendly mini PC for under the loft, and some cool LED Lights. She hasn’t left her room since… just kidding! But she absolutely loves it, and that’s all that matters! submitted by /u/kerrnadian to r/DIY [link] [comments]

My Take On The Ikea Alex Drawer + Countertop Hack (Build Guide Too)
I had seen a number of general guides out there relating to building desks from Alex Drawers + Any Countertop. Start with the end result first: https://preview.redd.it/8bnukyuax6y61.png?width=4000&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab91fb78d58542436b74c7274294e9bdc3294878 During the build process, I tried to reuse what I could from what came in the boxes from Ikea. List if Items used: Two Ikea Alex Drawers One Ikea Countertop (98" length) One 1"x1"x1/8" (thick) Aluminum Angle ~Ten #8 Round Head Wood Screws 3/4" in length Unfortunately, due to supply issues, this isn't the exact colour combo I wanted ... but it'll definitely make due until i really feel like something needs to change. Step 1 Build the Alex drawers as per the guide with a few changes: Put the top piece on the bottom. It's going on carpet, so that's fine by me. Don't put the top drawer in for ease of assembly later. Use the "bottom" piece later on. https://preview.redd.it/83ud4ai9x6y61.png?width=3000&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d55708c92256ac8bdd49776de25a2cdb46ed5cd Step 2 Get a general feel for where you want the drawers to sit under the Countertop. The aluminum angle is for general support along the back and can be used to back onto the Alex pieces as shown below. This example has them about 12" in from the end of the Countertop, but I ended up putting them at the very far ends. 1 foot in from the ends Step 3 Once the Alex tops are exactly where you want them, then you can use some of the existing/leftover screws to mount them to the Countertop. They'll go far enough in to secure them without disrupting the Countertop itself. Depth of the existing screws They will need a pilot hold the size of the body of the screw, allowing the threads to sink in nicely. I basically put the pieces in place, and stood on the Alex board on top of the Countertop and used my weight to keep everything in place. The front of the Alex drawer piece is flush with the front of the Countertop. Alex piece screwed into place. Step 4 Install the support angle piece. This is intended to mitigate sagging in the centre/back where weight will be. I may end up getting a 1/2" angle later on to go between the two Alex drawers later, but for now this will do. Ensure your hole in the aluminum allows the screw to go 99% through (or drop in) and that the head holds nicely. There are roughly 8-10 along the back. Once the aluminum is drilled, do a tiny pilot hole in the Countertop for the screw itself (half the thickness or less) just to guide direction and reduce the chance of cracking the Countertop. Once it's all said and done, just ensure that the aluminum is flush to the Countertop. Nice and Tight (but not too tight) Step 5 Probably the most awkward part is to actually put the top on the bottom. It definitely takes 2 people, and you can only estimate so much. There is enough leeway that you can put it on top of both incorrectly that the drawers can take the weight. Then left one end only, adjust and install. Repeat for the other side. Tighten the fasteners for the Alex "tops" and install the top drawer. And that's about it. Assembled before loading up with everything. submitted by /u/IamTHEvilONE to r/ikeahacks [link] [comments]
