I recently ordered a refurbished Kindle Basic Matcha from Amazon during Prime Day. With a trade-in discount + gift card on my old 2018 6" Paperwhite, I ended up paying only ~$45. I took a video of the unboxing as I have had some bad experiences ordering refurbs from Amazon in the past (two years ago I ordered a Refurbished Oasis and was instead sent an old Paperwhite, and the dispute was months-long). However the Kindle Matcha is absolutely in perfect condition! I figured I would post this unboxing in case anyone is curious about what it is like to save a few extra dollars on a refurbished Kindle and what to expect. It's been a few days since I got my Paper Pro after reading almost everything people have posted in this subreddit. Amazon launched their new Scribe Colorsoft just a day after I bought my Paper Pro, and here's why I'm keeping my Paper Pro. Unboxing First, I have to talk about the unboxing experience. reMarkable has perfected the unboxing with the Paper Pro. Every step had a reason and a logical flow. It's a fine blend of Apple taste with Nordic minimalism and I really liked it. Design The tablet feels premium and the texture on the back and sides is pleasant to the touch. I do wish the edges were less sharp though. I still haven't found a comfortable way to hold the tablet for long reading sessions. Some of you would say that's not the intention of this device, but I disagree — this Canvas Color display is a thing to behold and you'd be doing it an injustice by not doing heavy reading on it. More on that later. Overall this device feels amazing to hold. Doesn't feel cheap. The front glass texture feels great to the touch and I like that they kept the font in that plain off-white color. It blends well with the 11.8" Canvas Color display. Display This display is the perfect size for reading magazines and articles. I don't know enough about the whiteness of E Ink Gallery™ 3 display tech to do any comparisons, but the off-white color reMarkable chose for the Paper Pro gives off that printed magazine paper look from a bygone era. I love the nostalgia this display invokes when I read magazines on it. Colors look more like printed paper. The texture of the glass adds an effect that, again, makes it look a lot like old magazine pages. Manga and comics also look amazing on this screen. Being used to the reading light on my Kindle Paperwhite, I was surprised by how low the max brightness is on the Paper Pro's backlight. In a well-lit room, I don't see any effect on the first three brightness levels. Light then starts to bleed out of the edges when you push it any brighter than that. I have mixed feelings about it and I simply haven't used this device enough with its backlight on to decide. This is mainly because I prefer to read with some other light source in the room instead of the backlight. The gap between the display and the front glass is extremely low on the Paper Pro, and if I had to pick a good backlight vs this almost seamless screen, I'd go for the screen every single time. Marker Plus The Marker Plus surprised me with how good it feels in my hands. The weight just feels right. I was comparing it with the Apple Pencil Pro as I'm writing this. The Apple Pencil Pro may be a tad heavier than the Marker Plus, or they're very close; it was hard for me to pick. What's instantly noticeable is the rubber-like texture the Marker Plus has. It's grippier than the Apple Pencil and out of the two, I prefer the feel of the Marker Plus in my hand. Writing Experience The only other comparison I can make against the Paper Pro on writing is my iPad Pro. I did not enjoy writing on my iPad at all. The smooth glass skids the pen and for some reason just didn't give my brain the stimulation it needed to get into a zone. Slippery glass feel on the pen almost felt like cheating. Compared to that, the writing experience on the reMarkable is many times better. The texture on the glass gives off a feeling similar to writing on a blackboard with a piece of chalk. The Kobo is an e-reader. It’s not a kindle. Don’t expect it to operate like a kindle… cause it’s not a kindle. There isn’t automatic syncing most things you will have to do yourself manually using Calibre and other plugins. If you just want to read books get the Kobo Clara. If you want to read books and comics/manga get the Kobo libra. If you liked the size and buttons on the kindle Oasis, get the Kobo Libra. If you like the size of the paperwhite get the kobo Clara If you want apps on your reader this is the wrong place. I’d recommend watching reviews or unboxings on TikTok. Again the kobo isn’t a kindle. Please do your research… this is not a kindle. UPDATE The syncing comment was about EPUBs and books outside of the kobo store. I’d like to know if, when I unbox it, I should avoid connecting it to the internet in order to preserve the possibility of jailbreaking it. Also, what type of jailbreak would be the most useful, and what are the main advantages? I bought yesterday Kindle Paperwhite Signature 12, and I was baffled when I noticed how fast battery drained. When I unpacked it, I had 45%. Now only 16%. Here are things I've done since unboxing: I connected all accounts in it and upgraded OS to the latest update. Downloaded some books and dictionaries. Played with all settings and apps I found on Kindle as Browser, Store, Goodreeds. In total, I read some books for two-three hours (I used quite a lot dictionary, and online translate features). After all these things, my battery dropped on almost 30%. In my opinion, this's so much. On official docs says that it lasts 12 weeks, but I have feeling that my battery will last only two three weeks maximum with a full charge. My current version of OS is 5.18.3. How long your battery lasts and what usually you do? Is it expected that this device will drain the battery so fast when you use Wi-Fi? About a week ago I posted asking if the PPW5 is still worth buying in 2025. I even considered Kobo Clara BW since they have the same specs and features(except for the weight). After days of contemplating I decided to go with Kobo. I was so excited but I wasn’t like “all in” with the decision bc in the back of my head I can hear myself say “but I want the bigger and flushed screen ☹️” Because of that feeling I ended up making mock ups of the Kobo and Kindle PPW5 to see which size would I like the most and which one for me is more comfortable to read in but it didn’t help my indecisiveness at all, lol. Though it was 70/30, 70’s Kindle. Then I stumbled upon an online shop who sells refurbished Kindles(as well as brand new). I inquired and the shop owner was like “we actually have brand new Kindles that just came in less than an hour ago from the prime day sale.” I asked for the prices and I was 🤯 I think you can easily guess which one I chose to get. I got the Paperwhite 😊 6!! Not 5!! For only $130! Not sure if that’s a good deal to others but to me it is!! The Kobo that I was planning to buy retails for about $20 more of what I paid for the Kindle (Not even sure if that’s right, I’m shit at math. I got the Kindle 2 hours later and I’m telling you I was shakinggg while unboxing the damn thing. The kindle was perfect 😭😭😭 The size, the sturdiness and the premium feel of the device in my hands. As a first time e-reader owner, I was so blown away with the screen quality bc it does look like paper! It was also surprisingly fast(for an e-reader) bc I’ve watched dozens of videos on Youtube and some of them aren’t as fast as my unit. Maybe it has something to do with the storage use? Idk. Anyway, I am so sooo happy that I made this decision. It just feels so right(emotionally, physically and financially 😂) Also this is the first device that I bought with my own money. All of my other gadgets are either gifts or hand-me-downs. That’s why I’m ecstatic about this 🥹 One question though, I only had this for 2 days and the battery drains faster than I anticipated. I charged it for the first time a few hours ago. And just now it went from 100% to 98% in less than 5 minutes. Am I just overreacting or is that normal? P.S.
