You know I actually like the look of Labubus, especially the drawings of them by the original artist. But I didn’t want to add to the trend at the time, now that they’re starting to hit thrift stores I might go adopt a secondhand Labubu.

This is just a rant post but it seems to be trending now to hate on labubu after they're not popular anymore, and honestly it makes me so upset because I liked these little guys even before they blew up and I still like them now. But now I'm more ashamed to wear them on my bag or just talk about them in general. Throwaway because family is on Reddit. This happened over Christmas and it’s turning into a whole family drama. My daughter “Sofia” (12) and her cousin “Martina” (6 - daughter of my sister “Maria” and her husband “Jose”) were gifted blind box Labubus as part of their Christmas gift from my other sister “Sara”. They each opened their boxes. Martina got a brown one and Sofia got a pink one. Martina immediately wanted the pink one and Sofia immediately offered a trade because she already has the pink one and was hoping for the brown one. They traded, both girls were happy, and that was that….or so I thought. Later, Martina’s parents found out from taking to someone that the brown Labubu is apparently a rare “secret” version that can sell for $250+. Once they learned that, they called me said the girls needed to switch back and that Sofia was to return the brown one immediately. They even wanted me to drive over with it then and there despite the fact they live an hour away and it was already 8pm. I asked if Martina actually wanted the brown one back. They said that wasn’t the point. After some pushing back, Jose admitted someone was willing to pay him $225 for the Brown one and give Martina the pink one she wants. I said I wouldn’t force Sofia to swap back. From my perspective: Both kids were happy with the trade and got the Labubu they wanted. Sofia didn’t pressure or manipulate Martina into switching (if she had, I would have stepped in immediately and told her “you get what you get and you don’t get upset”). When I asked her, Sofia admitted she knew the brown one was rare, but when I asked how much they sell for, she said they are blind boxes so you can’t buy the brown, they just make less of them. She didn’t know it was worth money. She’s not a good liar, and she appeared to be telling the truth. Martina originally didn’t want the brown one and basically got upset when she saw Sofia got pink. It feels like Maria and Jose only want the brown one back because they can sell it and pocket money from it. Now they’re upset with me and saying I’m being unfair and taking advantage of a 6-year-old and Jose even called Sofia a Manipulative B***h which I think is a reach when Sofia didn’t know it was worth a lot of money, she just knew they were rare to pull, that she already had the pink and Martina was crying for the pink one. Sara has said this is “stupid parent drama” and she’s staying out of it and said we can sort it out ourselves. So AITA for refusing to make my daughter give the brown Labubu back? EDIT: Jose called Sofia a Manipulative B***h to me on the phone discussing it, not to Sofia’s face. He’d be a dead man walking if he said it to her. It was said about an hour before making the post and I hung up on him for it and has not yet been addressed. My wife and I will obviously be addressing it, I was still processing it when I made the post, but the "manipulative" part made me wonder if I was being unreasonable, hence making the post. EDIT 2: since I can't reply now: Sofia is trying to collect the whole set of these Labubus, and her motivation for wanting the brown was to help complete the set. She has no intention of selling or trading it. After talking about it with her again, she took "rare" to mean it was simply harder to find in the boxes, she doesn't engage in buying/reselling. AFAIK Jose and Maria are not in desperate need of the cash.....they're not rich sure, but to the best of my knowledge, not in the kind of financial situation where the only way to keep the lights on for the next quarter is to sell their child's gift. Im not gonna lie i was introduced a bit before the viral labubu trend went crazy, i was a bit meh at first but then they kinda remined me of myself with the backstories of them specially the mischevious way🤣 and i felt in love with them. But anyways i think others also feel the thing that when people comment «labubu trend is over lol» like okay? So what? Just because it isn’t as talked about anymore we can’t enjoy them anymore? A month ago, my 3 year old son asked for a Labubu. I couldn’t figured out the Popmart site worked so I purchased two from mall kiosk(this was after I went into the store and asked to buy one HA HA) resellers in hopes of getting him a blue one. We got a blue and a green. Yay. Then he asked for a purple one. I did some research and found TikTok shop and bought a box, now we got all the colors. THEN he wants a Secret. So, I ordered the other kind and try to trick him because it’ll look different and maybe he will think it’s a secret. Nope. He asked for secret in that version(I stopped at 3 boxes of the non tie dye ones) I get 2 more complete set boxes and like 4-5 singles, no Secret. At some point I figured out the Popmart site and got some single boxes that way. Thankfully, he has a birthday party at the end of the month and I can give most of the surplus away as party favors. His taekwondo teacher got one because she likes them(she started crying) and I plan on handing these things out like sneezes until they are gone. I did look at resell for the the fuzzy gray Secret but honestly, I think I’m petty and would rather spend another $300 trying to get one and giving away the extra Labubu’s because, honestly, seeing a woman who can flip me over her shoulder cry over a free Labubu made all the money spent looking for a secret worth it. I can’t wait to see the reactions from all his friends when they get their Labubu’s, one little girl in his preschool class has been telling me she wishes she had a purple one, so I marked the bottom of a purple box, just for her :’) Anyways, I thought I’d share my experience with these little monsters. My kid (11) asked for a LABUBU figure few months ago. I looked it up—turns out it’s a $130 evil gremlin in a costume. She got super upset when I told her no. Can’t blame her—her friends have them, they’re all over TikTok, and the whole thing is marketed disgustingly well. But the more I sat with it, the more it pissed me off. Okay, I know this sounds so ridiculous and insane. I (18F) am adopted and was adopted as a baby. My parents thought they couldn’t have kids, even tried IVF, so when my sister Princess (10F) was born, it was a miracle. Everything changed. Princess was spoiled and clearly the favorite. She never got in trouble, was always right, got WHATEVER she wanted and acted HOWEVER she wanted. My parents didn’t treat me badly though, but if I got 1 toy, Princess got 5. It sucked, I was jealous, and I got in trouble for it. Princess got worse around age 6 when she realized how much she could get away with. She broke my things, hurt others, stole, and hated when anyone else had attention. I became a target. Luckily, I had friends, school, and relatives for support though so it wasn’t the worst. I did great in school and joined clubs and sports just to stay out of the house. During summer I worked or interned just to avoid her. Now I have a car and a boyfriend (since sophomore year). I stay with him a lot and his family loves me so I’m barely home, maybe 24 hours at most weekly. My parents didn’t care and this was my normal so I stopped caring too. Anyway graduation was last month, one of the few things I asked my parents to come to. I was excited, they seemed excited, and some relatives came too. But Princess had to ruin it. See her current obsession are these doll plush keychains called Labubus, she collects them and that specific day, she found this super rare one for sale in our city. Now instead of contacting the seller and buying it the next day, my parents went to go get it and not only that spent $350. (my grad gift was $150) Then they showed up so late, our caps were already being tossed. I was hurt. After graduation, I ignored them and went home with my boyfriend. I’ve basically moved in with him at this point since anytime I went back “home” it was to get my things to go back. My parents called, texted, apologized, even came over and begged me to forgive them, worst part of it all, they think it’s the money and sent me another hundred dollars. I refused to talk to them. Now it’s serious as they’re threatening to report me as missing/ a runaway and contact my future college if I don’t go back home.
