After seeing multiple posts about smelly litter boxes…I felt compelled to share!
Firstly, I have had indoor cats my entire life. I am 51. My friends and family do not hold back on making comments on litter smell. My Dad especially likes to make comments when he visits. I have changed my life, my cat’s life, and my Dads with one simple change…INVEST IN A STAINLESS STEEL LITTER BOX. No more bleaching, no more vinegar, no more soaking boxes, no more endless trials of various and sundry litter. It is worth the money. The fact this never occurred to me, makes me so mad. Stainless steel is used in industrial and restaurant kitchens for a reason…they don’t absorb smells. They even sell little stainless steel bars to rub on your hands…BECAUSE THEY ELIMINATE ODORS. Plastic litter boxes absorb urine, especially when your cat’s claws make endless little grooves while scratching around. My Dad thought I’d gotten rid of my cat on his last visit. As if. Save up, buy one, live in odorless peace. submitted by /u/Aibrean2013 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

AIO by telling my roomate I'll put the cat litter box in her room if she doesnt clean it?
Both me and my roomate/friend are 20f. We were friends years before moving in together and are generally very close as people and live together well. I've had a consistent issue with her cat though. The cat in question is only hers, not mine or ours, so its her responsibility. And she lets the litter box get extremely full before she cleans it at all. This causes the cat to go to the bathroom on the floor because the box has no room left by the time she cleans it. Genuinely multiple times per month I have to deal with feces or urine all over the shared floor. We only have one bathroom. I always have to clean up after her cat or step around waste when I'm in my own house. I dont think its fair at all or okay. I have reminded her many times over the course of months to please keep the area more clean and make sure the box isnt ever full so the cat can use the bathroom properly. But she doesnt listen or gets defensive about it. Today I texted her and somewhat jokingly threatened to put the box in her room if she doesnt clean it. Which I dont want to literally do, since the bedrooms are carpet and yes that would be ridiculous to clean. But at this point idk what else to do because I cant just constantly be in an unsanitary situation. And I shouldn't have to clean up after her cat. She got really upset over me bringing up putting the box in her room. Which like I said what a half joke, but I am genuinely considering it. How to Make Cat Litter Box Cleaning Less Disgusting (Without Neglecting It)
Cleaning the litter box doesn’t have to be the worst part of having a cat. Some simple hacks can make it way less gross, like using liners that actually stay in place, scooping at the right time so clumps don’t get hard, and keeping a little “station” with gloves, scooper, and a trash bag so you’re not scrambling. Even small things, like swapping out the litter in stages instead of dumping it all at once, or putting the box somewhere with good airflow, can make a huge difference. It’s all about cutting down the mess and smell without ignoring the box, your nose (and your cat) will thank you. submitted by /u/Crazy_Finger5493 to r/Catownerhacks [link] [comments]

Why do architects forget that pets exist? Dealing with the "litter box in the laundry room" fail.
I’m currently mid-renovation on my guest bath/laundry combo and the layout is a nightmare. I have exactly 24 inches of clearance under the vanity, and I refuse to have a plastic eyesore sitting in the middle of the hallway. I’ve spent way too long looking for a litter box for small space integration that doesn't require me to saw a hole in my custom cabinetry. Most "furniture" options are made of cheap MDF that swells the second it gets damp. I’ve shifted my search toward finding a high-performance litter box for small space that actually has a vertical footprint instead of horizontal. It’s wild that we talk about smart fridges and hidden pantries but "where to put the cat" is always an afterthought in home design. Has anyone successfully built a dedicated nook for a modern unit, or am I better off just sacrificing the bottom of my linen closet? submitted by /u/8Nakul to r/HomeImprovement [link] [comments]

litter box suggestions?
Does anyone have any recommendations for a new litterbox? I currently use a small, pan like box for my 5MO kitten but he’s getting bigger and I think he’s ready for a new one. I don’t know much about self cleaning litter boxes besides the fact that they can be dangerous, so I’m unsure about those. Any suggestions are so welcome, thank you!!🩷 submitted by /u/SoftlyMarie to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Accidentally solved a year-long litter box problem in one weekend (sharing in case it helps someone)
I wanted to share this because I’ve learned more about my cat in one weekend than I did in an entire year, and I wish I’d understood this sooner. To set the scene, I have 5 indoor cats. My whole house is cat oriented. We have cat shelves and perches on the walls. Lots of toys, cat trees, fountains. The whole thing. My Lucky cat has struggled with litter box issues for a long time. Specifically, Lucky would poop outside the box every other day or so, even though the boxes were clean, there were plenty of them, they were in a private area, same litter, and he’s been vet checked. On top of that, whenever we had visitors, he would pee on things like bags, baby gear, or near doors. It always felt intentional in the sense that he wanted us to notice. He’d often do it in very visible spots or in areas where we were nearby, which made it feel even more stressful and confusing. I was honestly starting to feel like I was running out of options and was scared that eventually it would come down to rehoming him or making him an outside cat, which absolutely broke my heart. This weekend we had houseguests, including a baby, and based on past visits I was really worried about stress accidents. To try to prevent that, I set up a calm “reset space” for him in our attached garage. This wasn’t meant as punishment. He’s been in the garage before and is comfortable there. I put his favorite XL litter box, his favorite bed, toys, food, and water out there. What surprised me was how clearly he communicated once he had that option. He would come inside when things were calm, but when he started to feel overwhelmed, he would walk to the garage door and meow to be let out. He even slept out there by choice. At one point he headed toward one of his usual stress spots near the back door, and when I said his name, he immediately redirected himself to the garage door instead. And the biggest thing: no accidents. No pooping outside the box. No stress peeing when visitors were around. That is huge for us, because the pooping outside the box had been happening consistently for a long time. It finally clicked that this was never really about dirty boxes or not enough boxes. It was about stress, shared scent, and lack of control. Inside, the other cats mostly use a litter robot, which he hates. I suspect it’s because it’s enclosed, mechanical, and smells like everyone. Even though his box was in a private closet area, it was still a communal bathroom. The garage box smells like him. It’s quiet. No robot noises. No one sneaking up on him. We’re keeping the garage as his permanent reset zone now. I’m also adding an open-top self-cleaning litter box inside as a backup, after letting him try it in the garage first so it smells familiar. I even started gentle harness training just for enrichment and confidence building, but I’m watching out for his stress cues to avoid over doing it. I feel relieved in a way I didn’t realize I needed. I went from feeling like I was failing him to realizing I just hadn’t found the right environmental setup yet. Sharing this in case anyone else is stuck in a doom loop of litter box issues. I think giving Lucky choice, privacy, and a way to escape is what made it all click. submitted by /u/b-randy90 to r/cats [link] [comments]

What are good automatic litter boxes (other than the litter robot)?
I would like to purchase an automatic litter box that isn’t a litter robot due to the insane price. Budget is around $300. I see several options on Amazon but I’m not sure if any of the options are any good. The main reason is odor control. I’d ideally like an automatic litter box that has good odor control. Does anyone have any self-cleaning litter boxes they’ve purchased where it’s been a positive experience? AIO for being upset that my husband wants me to continue litter box duty while pregnant?
My husband and I are expecting our first child. I am only 6 weeks and just found out. Last night we had friends over who we told and she said “oh now you have to take care of the litter box!” And he was like eh she can do it still. And she went on to explain toxoplasmosis and all that and he just kinda ignored it. Well this morning he mentions “by the way I googled it and technically you can still do the litter box if you wear gloves and do it every day.” And I was just confused if he was being serious and why he would want to risk it. And he insisted Google says it’s not infective for a day and if I do it every day then I’ll be fine. But like… why would we risk it? I mean I can sure but I feel like it’s wild to not even wanna try to help me out?? Hormones got the best of me and I started crying and just left the room because I didn’t feel like arguing or crying in front of him. Is this ridiculous or am I just hormonal?? Update: I ended up taking a drive to clear my head and try to chill out because I was quite upset. I ended up texting him that I felt like he was trying to get out of litterbox duty and he didn’t google it out of fear of my well being. He of course denied it and insisted he only googled it because he thought we (my friends and I) were messing with him and he never said I HAD to. Which I said it definitely felt implied like I wasn’t getting out of doing it since you “found a solution.” Overall I told him I feel extremely unsupported if this is how he is acting so soon and he essentially just kept doubling down that I had it all wrong and he never said he wouldn’t help. But we have been together for 5 years and he definitely does weasel his way out of chores. This baby was a surprise and I am sad we haven’t worked through marital issues before this but I don’t want an abortion. I am excited to be a mom and I definitely had my own come to Jesus moment. I just assumed he wanted to be a dad so bad he would make sacrifices for his unborn child even if he wouldn’t for his wife and this felt like a slap in the face. I definitely have some thinking to do. And I WILL be mentioning this to my OB in a few weeks. submitted by /u/BigVenergy09 to r/AmIOverreacting [link] [comments]

After 22 different fully charted cat litter tests… I have finally found the holy grail
And before some moron says “oh he’s a troll or he’s with one of the companies” I’m not and if you wish to think that, knock yourself out, I have no desire to convince you otherwise so feel free to ignore what I’m sharing then. However, for those who care about what the holy grail of litter means to me, it is as follows, which I share purely out of the nice guy in me, because I would want someone to share this with me. So I just purchased 13 different types of litter and literally created an excel sheet and monitored tracking, smell, cleanliness inside the snowy, duration and how fast for the bin to get full. I have finally come up with the perfect combination of litters. It isn’t cheap but it isn’t terrible, it is about 1.5-1.7 times the cost of Arm & Hammer Slide and those premium clay litters. So this combination I settled on gave me: - zero tracking - zero smell - lasted the longest among the 22 different combinations I tried It should be noted I have two cats, one of which is unstable diabetic so pees excessively If you have just one cat and/or none of your cats are diabetic, your results will be even better than mine so lucky you. I have the Pet Snowy litter box, and I use Glad Cherry Blossom garbage bags, and I use the third party pet snowy bag clips you can buy on Etsy, so you don’t have to pay for the expensive pet snowy bags. For additional smell control, I use a healthy sprinkle of: https://a.co/d/9XH9qhL and https://a.co/d/aLJeFU9 I put a healthy sprinkle in with the litter and also a healthy sprinkle in the empty bag in the bin. The litter combination I use is as follows: 3 Cups of the multigrain Sustainably Yours https://www.petsmart.ca/5308031.html 4 Cups of CatIt Pea Husk Litter https://a.co/d/e7vh7UP 2cups PetSafe unscented litter crystals https://a.co/d/hpge2KE This lasted my two cats, one with very excessive urinating, 2.5 days between changes, zero tracking, zero smell, no scooping. It would at least 3.5 days if my cat was urinating normally, probably even 4 days. So this is, to me, the perfect combination. The only drawback is the cost being about 1.5-1.75 times the cost of Arm&Hammer Slide but the trade off is worth it. There is no other drawback to this combination. I have tested it thoroughly, tried every litter out there, and charted it all. I put my personal word behind this combination and that might not mean anything since you don’t know me, but I would be VERY surprised if someone tried this as I’ve outlined and didn’t also have the exact same conclusion as me. Let me know if you try it! Spreadsheet can be found at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10y1qqYP5dmEB5IzUWbqS19soCO2vdBlJ/view?usp=drive_link Also, the reason I did this is because we live in a very small condo and my partner hates cats to no end. He is very patient otherwise but I have to make sure the cats are as minimal of impact as possible otherwise we fight about it so I’ve just learned to keep on top of it. But that doesn’t mean I want to be doing cat chores all day so I wanted to find the best combination, for as little work as possible. We have a robot vacuum that is programmed to vacuum around the litter box every time a cat is finished going to the washroom, the motion sensor inside tells the vacuum to go to that area and vacuum. So this is one step to make my life easier :) submitted by /u/homeassistantme to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

It is currently 2am where I am at. I woke up to my boyfriend walking into his office and then heard him using the bathroom. I thought, “I’m just really tired. There’s no fucking way. Don’t Buy This Litter box!
This is for anyone who has considered buying an automatic litter box. Be careful which one you buy because there are counterfeits that can potentially harm your cats. There’s one on Amazon right now called the “Lppetog” which has a dangerous vertical rotating mechanism. There are others of the same type under different brand names too so research what you buy! It’s better to save up to buy a more reliable expensive one than risk the life of your babies!! One Man Five Cats made a video about this and I’ve seen it on other subreddits but I wanted to make sure the message was spread here too! Stay safe yall submitted by

Litter box advice from a professional cat behavior consultant.
I’m scrolling through Reddit tonight and seeing a lot of litter box posts, so here are my quick tips if you’re struggling with litter box issues. TAKE THE CAT TO THE VET. I don’t care if you “think it’s behavioral.” This is always, always, always the first step. Where are your boxes located? Are they in a dark corner of the basement? Would you buy a 3-story house where the only bathroom was in the basement? Of course not. You should have one per floor, in a private but not isolated spot. Multiple cats? Issues between cats? Multiple options, spread out is key to allow the cats to have boxes away from each other. How many boxes do you have? You should have one box per cat, plus at least one extra. Two boxes placed next to each other counts as one box, sorry. Spread those boxes out!! No clumping of resources. How often do you clean the box? Scoop once a day, minimum, and fully dump the litter and scrub the box with soap and water at least twice a month. What’s in the box? Unscented, clumping clay litter is what MOST cats prefer. Stay away from pellets or crystals. They can be sharp or unpleasant on cat paws. Depth should be 2-3 inches in general. What size is the box? It needs to be big enough that your cat can turn in a complete circle without touching any walls. Most commercially made litter boxes are too small. Bigger is better, people. Covered or uncovered? There are exceptions to every rule, but if you don’t like pooping in a port-a-potty, why would your cat? Covered boxes are statistically cleaned less (out of sight out of mind) and retain stink inside. They’re also almost always too small. If your cat is peeing/pooping right next to the box, it’s probably a problem with the box. If your cat has one preferred pee spot not near the box, it’s probably location. If your cat is peeing on your bed, laundry, or couch, it’s probably stress. If your cat is peeing everywhere, it’s probably medical. If your cat is peeing vertically (spraying) on walls, doors, and windows, it’s probably territorial marking. Also, there are many cat behavior professionals out there (myself included) that handle litter box cases virtually. You can hire them! Many people still do not realize this resource exists. This has been litter box 101. Thanks for coming to my talk. submitted by /u/laurahas7cats to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]
