If you take magnesium glycinate
I had a panic attack a year ago and developed some health anxiety. If I feel chest sensations it can make me spiral, I feel like I’m about to have a stroke and so on. I’ve gone to the doctors multiple times and they said I’m fine. I was ready to “lock in” get back in shape so i thought to order supplements. I ordered magnesium glycinate because if your follow doctors, creators, they always talk about magnesium. I thought to get glycinate because I’d take it at night and saw its meant to relax. Who doesn’t want to relax especially when feeling anxious. Anyways, for a whole month I felt so low mood. Out of body, floaty head, feeling depressed way more anxious. I had only dealt with hyper awareness of my body sensations after that panick attack but now it was more mental. Luckily I’ve never experienced depression until this past month. I went to the DR for chest sensations they said it was anxiety and they recommended SSRI’s. I denied. (Another tip: if you’re a side sleeper don’t sleep on your left side. It can cause tightness which then we confuse with heart sensations.) Don’t bed rot, it causes the same. Anyways, I came across a post of someone asking if they’ve felt worse taking this supplement. I then logged into my Amazon to see when I got the magnesium delivered and it was a month ago… As soon as it arrived I was taking consistently every single night. It was the whole month I took magnesium glycinate I was feeling like shit. I researched and found actual studies claiming magnesium has negative side effects. Exactly what I was feeling. Apparently a lot of people get these side effects. I immediately stopped. Tell me why I feel like myself again. This is your reminder that for supplements just how they work for good the can work for bad if you react negatively to them. I also feel like maybe I didn’t react well because I sleep very well, and have a very chill day to day and maybe it’s for people who are more go go go. Just a thought. 24M. Spent $350/month on supplements. Bloodwork showed half were actively hurting me.
i want to preface this by saying i thought i was being smart. i was tracking everything, listening to the right podcasts, buying quality brands. i was not being smart. at my peak i was running creatine, omega-3, vitamin D with K2, magnesium threonate, ashwagandha KSM-66, fadogia agrestis, tongkat ali, zinc at 50mg daily, copper to offset the zinc, lion's mane, a B-complex, and CoQ10. $350/month. i had a whole system. then i got a comprehensive bloodwork panel. not the basic one. a real one. and the results were not what i expected. copper: flagged low. because the zinc at 50mg daily was suppressing it. been taking that dose for months thinking i was supporting testosterone. turns out i was slowly depleting a mineral my body needs for actual enzyme function, immune response, and collagen production. B vitamins: way too high. intracellular, not serum. the kind your doctor doesn't run by default. i had neurological tingling in my hands that i'd been ignoring for weeks. you know what causes that? B6 toxicity. which i had. from supplements i was taking because i thought more was better. the fadogia: i'd been taking it based on essentially one rat study where the rats showed liver toxicity at the human-equivalent dose. i think about that now and feel genuinely stupid. one rat study. daily. for months. so what happened when i dropped everything? i kept creatine (5g, decades of evidence), omega-3 high EPA, vitamin D at 3000 IU with K2 MK-7, and magnesium glycinate before bed. switched from threonate because glycinate works better for me personally and costs half as much. total monthly spend: about $45. i feel better. not a little better. noticeably, clearly, actually better than i did on the $350 stack. the tingling is gone. sleep is deeper. i have actual emotions again (ashwagandha blunting is real and nobody talks about it enough). bloodwork came back clean across the board. i also started doing the boring stuff. 8 hours of sleep non-negotiable. cardio 5x a week. protein at 1g per pound. cut alcohol to basically never. morning sunlight. i know. but the gap between "$350/month stack plus okay habits" and "$45/month basics plus actually dialed lifestyle" is not close. they're not even in the same universe. this sub, and the podcast ecosystem around it, has a way of making you feel like you're always behind. like there's always one more compound. and that feeling is what got me to $350/month with nerve damage and a crashed copper level while thinking i was being optimized. get comprehensive bloodwork. not the basic panel. look at what's HIGH, not just what's low. and maybe be honest with yourself about how many things you're running because you have real data versus because a pod ad made it sound necessary. i've been writing more about this stuff over on my substack linked in my profile, if you're curious to go deeper it's there. anyway. i'm genuinely curious if anyone else has done this. pulled way back and felt better. based on the DMs i get when i mention this in comments i don't think i'm the only one. i think a lot of people in this space are quietly spending a fortune, feeling nothing, and too deep in to admit it. EDIT: if you’re here because you’re researching supplement side effects, bloodwork results, or whether your stack is actually helping, this is the short version of what i learned the hard way: • high dose zinc supplementation (50mg+) can cause copper deficiency, which is linked to anemia, immune dysfunction, and neurological issues like numbness and balance problems • excess vitamin b6 (common in b complex, zma, and multivitamins) can cause peripheral neuropathy, including tingling, burning, or numbness in hands and feet • more supplements does not equal better health. stacking can create imbalances, toxicity, and unintended interactions • bloodwork should include intracellular vitamins and minerals, not just standard panels • many popular testosterone boosters (like fadogia agrestis) have limited human evidence and potential safety concerns what actually worked better for me: • minimal, evidence based stack (creatine, omega 3, vitamin d + k2, magnesium) • prioritizing fundamentals: sleep, diet, exercise, sunlight, and alcohol reduction • regular bloodwork to guide decisions instead of guessing if you’re currently taking multiple supplements and not feeling better, or feeling worse, it may be worth asking: “do i actually need this, or am i just optimizing blindly?” submitted by /u/Timely_Ad8989 to r/Biohackers [link] [comments]

Tirzepatide side effects nobody warned me about and what helped
So the nausea everyone talks about? Yeah, that hit me but something that actually caught me off guard was the fatigue in weeks 2 and 3. Not tired like I needed a nap, more like my legs weighed 400 pounds and my brain refused to work properly. The other thing was hair and not in a catastrophic way but enough that I noticed it around the two month mark. My doctor said it's usually a stress response from rapid weight change and it tends to sort itself out, which it has for the most part. A few things that helped were eating smaller amounts more frequently instead of waiting for hunger cues (which mostly disappeared anyway), and drinking enough water. That one sounds obvious but I wasn't drinking enough. For constipation, magnesium glycinate at night changed that pretty quickly. The checki in progress with my provider has made it easier to flag these things as they showed up. My overall experience has been positive even with the bumpy first few weeks. Does anyone else find the fatigue gets better after a while? Who doesn’t want to relax especially when feeling anxious. Anyways, for a whole month I felt so low mood. Out of body, floaty head, feeling depressed way more anxious. I had only dealt with hyper awareness of my body sensations after that panick attack but now it was more mental. Luckily I’ve never experienced depression until this past month. I went to the DR for chest sensations they said it was anxiety and they recommended SSRI’s. I denied. (Another tip: if you’re a side sleeper don’t sleep on your left side. It can cause tightness which then we confuse with heart sensations.) Don’t bed rot, it causes the same. Anyways, I came across a post of someone asking if they’ve felt worse taking this supplement. I then logged into my Amazon to see when I got the magnesium delivered and it was a month ago… As soon as it arrived I was taking consistently every single night. It was the whole month I took magnesium glycinate I was feeling like shit. I researched and found actual studies claiming magnesium has negative side effects. Exactly what I was feeling. Apparently a lot of people get these side effects. I immediately stopped. Tell me why I feel like myself again. This is your reminder that for supplements just how they work for good the can work for bad if you react negatively to them. 24M. Spent $350/month on supplements. Bloodwork showed half were actively hurting me.
i want to preface this by saying i thought i was being smart. i was tracking everything, listening to the right podcasts, buying quality brands. i was not being smart. at my peak i was running creatine, omega-3, vitamin D with K2, magnesium threonate, ashwagandha KSM-66, fadogia agrestis, tongkat ali, zinc at 50mg daily, copper to offset the zinc, lion's mane, a B-complex, and CoQ10. $350/month. i had a whole system. then i got a comprehensive bloodwork panel. not the basic one. a real one. and the results were not what i expected. copper: flagged low. because the zinc at 50mg daily was suppressing it. been taking that dose for months thinking i was supporting testosterone. turns out i was slowly depleting a mineral my body needs for actual enzyme function, immune response, and collagen production. B vitamins: way too high. intracellular, not serum. the kind your doctor doesn't run by default. i had neurological tingling in my hands that i'd been ignoring for weeks. you know what causes that? B6 toxicity. which i had. from supplements i was taking because i thought more was better. the fadogia: i'd been taking it based on essentially one rat study where the rats showed liver toxicity at the human-equivalent dose. i think about that now and feel genuinely stupid. one rat study. daily. for months. so what happened when i dropped everything? i kept creatine (5g, decades of evidence), omega-3 high EPA, vitamin D at 3000 IU with K2 MK-7, and magnesium glycinate before bed. switched from threonate because glycinate works better for me personally and costs half as much. total monthly spend: about $45. i feel better. not a little better. noticeably, clearly, actually better than i did on the $350 stack. the tingling is gone. sleep is deeper. i have actual emotions again (ashwagandha blunting is real and nobody talks about it enough). bloodwork came back clean across the board. i also started doing the boring stuff. 8 hours of sleep non-negotiable. cardio 5x a week. protein at 1g per pound. cut alcohol to basically never. morning sunlight. i know. but the gap between "$350/month stack plus okay habits" and "$45/month basics plus actually dialed lifestyle" is not close. they're not even in the same universe. this sub, and the podcast ecosystem around it, has a way of making you feel like you're always behind. like there's always one more compound. and that feeling is what got me to $350/month with nerve damage and a crashed copper level while thinking i was being optimized. get comprehensive bloodwork. not the basic panel. look at what's HIGH, not just what's low. and maybe be honest with yourself about how many things you're running because you have real data versus because a pod ad made it sound necessary. i've been writing more about this stuff over on my substack linked in my profile, if you're curious to go deeper it's there. anyway. i'm genuinely curious if anyone else has done this. pulled way back and felt better. based on the DMs i get when i mention this in comments i don't think i'm the only one. i think a lot of people in this space are quietly spending a fortune, feeling nothing, and too deep in to admit it. Tirzepatide side effects nobody warned me about and what helped
So the nausea everyone talks about? Yeah, that hit me but something that actually caught me off guard was the fatigue in weeks 2 and 3. Not tired like I needed a nap, more like my legs weighed 400 pounds and my brain refused to work properly. The other thing was hair and not in a catastrophic way but enough that I noticed it around the two month mark. My doctor said it's usually a stress response from rapid weight change and it tends to sort itself out, which it has for the most part. A few things that helped were eating smaller amounts more frequently instead of waiting for hunger cues (which mostly disappeared anyway), and drinking enough water. That one sounds obvious but I wasn't drinking enough. For constipation, magnesium glycinate at night changed that pretty quickly. The checki in progress with my provider has made it easier to flag these things as they showed up. My overall experience has been positive even with the bumpy first few weeks. Weird side effects of Magnesium Glycinate
I never used to react to mag glycinate like this until I re-introduced it again last week. The symptoms I'm experiencing: Increased gut motility, which is technically a good side effect in theory but it's accompanied with severe cramping and bathroom urgency (TMI but it doesn't change my BMs, it's just the urgency of needing to go). When I first took it I also woke up in the middle of the night having massive anxiety, sweating and doom-like feelings. Excessive sweating from temperature changes/ hot flashes. Any basic, physical activity leaves me drenched in sweat. Headaches and fatigue the next day (I take 150-300mg at night) Tingling has gone haywire. The reason I started taking mag is because I wanted to address my life long symptom of having paresthesia/tingling through the lower half of my body. Mag makes it 1000 times worse. Am I severely deficient, depleting another mineral/vitamin or just need to wait out these side effects before stopping and trying out another form of mag? Magnesium threonate had very bad side effects on me
First of all, this post is not meant to say that magnesium theronate is inherently bad, but in combination with your individual biochemistry, it can have pretty rough effects on you. I started taking 45 mg magnesium with 680 mg of threonate (1 capsule) with my usual 200 mg of magnesium malate around 6 months ago and first thought, it had no negative side effects. I took magnesium glycinatre before and this gave me low key anxiety, panic and impending sense off doom. But I was completely tired and fatigued and did lab tests and blamed it on a major surgery with a lot of blood loss and me being in perimenopause. Fast forward to now, I had to increase my dose of magnesium and decided to take 2 capsules of magnesium threonate a day. First, I took one in the evening with 100 mg of malate and felt absolutely wiped the next day. I blamed it on the larger amount of magnesium and took 2 capsules at noon. Suddenly, all the hell broke loose. My brain stopped functioning with immense brain fog, trouble finding words, trouble with coordination and concentration. The physical fatigue was mind-blowing and at the same time, I was wired and my nerves seemed to buzz. The same night, I had a bad nights sleep and was awake for 2 hours. And it all started to make sense. My inexplainable fatigue, the brain fog and all of the symptoms I blamed on something else for the last 6 months. It was a weaker reaction to the 1 capsule of magnesium threonate I was taking. Did a search on reddit and there are a few posts, where people had the same or a similar reaction to it. Turns out, magnesium threonate can have the opposite effect on some people and I am one of the lucky ones. I got brain fog, impaired sleep, frayed nerves and immense fatigue from this supplement. It got to the point, that I felt my quality of life was wasting away with zero energy and motivation. I was so tired, I had to lie down to sleep after work. Needless to say, that I immediately stopped taking it and will never touch this stuff again. It remains to be seen, when the effects will wear off completely, but it´s 2 days since I took the last capsules and it already starts to feel better. I cleaned my house this morning and felt motivated to do things instead of just sitting around on the couch and feeling tired. Never in a million years would I have thought, that threonate was the culprit and that´s why I wrote this post. Magnesium threonate can be amazing and I read a lot of posts proving this, but for a few people, it will not work at all. 8 Months of Topical Fin/Min Application
Now on the presumably "tail end" of my logarithmic reaction to my hair routine. Here's my stack and some commonly asked questions from my updates a quarter ago. Routine: .3% Finasteride, 6% Minoxidil topical combination. Applied originally via four .25ml sprays. Moved to a dropper bottle at month 4. Applied nightly 6x per week right before bed, have only missed 2 nights total. Dermastamp (microneedle) 1mm once weekly before bed. Temples and scalp. I skip the topical on this night. Keta shampoo, normal concentration, 3 mins on scalp once or twice a week. Other Considerations people asked about (probably didn't have much of a hair-effect): I religiously take a multivitamin, fish oil, magnesium glycinate, and 5g of creatine daily. I lift 4x weekly and play team sports once or twice weekly. I sleep 8.5 hrs per night consistently. I drink socially most weekends. In the back half of my 20s. I am not sponsored, so I will not provide the brand name of the topical. It is safe to assume that it is the largest US men's hair regrowth company. Receded lightly through college then thinned consistently for a year before deciding to do something about it. I have had zero side effects. None whatsoever. I know that is individual to myself but no need to ask in the comments, I promise I don't miss issues with my body when they arise. Since taking two magnesium a night before bed, my sleep score has been consistently in the 90s. Granted I didn’t have horrible sleep scores prior to that (most in the 80s with some nights in the 70s), but now I can’t seem to stop taking this supplement, knowing what it can achieve. Taking weekly Vitamin D supplement . Do I really need Magnesium Glycinate or is Magnesium Oxide okay?
I take a weekly Vitamin D supplement (60,000 IU) and recently read that magnesium helps with Vitamin D absorption and activation. So I picked up Ultra Magnesium 200 mg tablets (by Vitabiotics). However, I’ve seen a lot of people online recommending Magnesium Glycinate instead of other forms like oxide or citrate because of better absorption and fewer side effects. The one I have contains magnesium oxide. Should I continue with it or switch to glycinate once I finish this pack? I took Magnesium Glycinate daily for 2 months (500mg) but the Glycine in Mag Glycinate gave me horrible brainfog, short term memory loss, lowered intellect. It has made me slow and unable to think or recall memories clearly. I used to be an intelligent kid and was able to think critically :( I've stopped taking it from 2 weeks (taking L-threonate now) but the brainfog effects have not gone away completely. Magnesium Glycinate was the worst thing ever.
Hello!! I stumbled upon this subreddit and found that everyone SWEARS by magnesium glycinate. They said it helps their muscles relax, sleep, cognitive function, etc. like a silver bullet. So I bit the…bullet…and bought some mg glycinate and took it an hour before bed. Not 30 minutes later, my heart rate started going up. Strange. Went to sleep…then woke up at 4:00 AM. Tossing and turning. Hot as hell. Not a fever, but clearly lots of anxiety. Could not sleep whatsoever. It’s now the late morning and I’m finally losing the effects of it and going back to normal. To make sure this wasn’t a fluke I did this again a week apart and the same thing happened. I don’t know why. EDIT: Woah, okay this post blew up! Everyone who's new to supplements--never take them with no one else in the house or before something important. And don't take the full dose at once, go half and ramp it up to the recommended. Elvanse + magnesium glycinate = Game changer!
So I guess I want to start off by saying that I’ve come to realise that everyone is very different when it comes to supplements. I’ve read countless recommendations on here before that have led me to try supplements that haven’t offered any real tangible improvement for me. That said, I’m quite taken back by the improvement I’ve seen since I started taking magnesium glycinate with my Elvanse, that I wanted to share it in case it helps anyone, and to see if anyone else has had similar experiences. But please don’t assume that you will necessarily share the same experience as me I’m currently coming to the end of my titration having titrated up to the maximum dose of 70mg. While I have to admit it has been absolutely life changing for me in terms of eliminating my binge eating, leaving my mind calmer, improving myself and improving my focus. The consistency has sometimes been a bit hit and miss, especially around my focus - some days I’ve felt a little over stimulated, while other days I’ve felt a bit unmotivated. Anyway, I recently came across a post on where someone mentioned they had been using magnesium glycinate alongside their Elvanse and that they had found that their results were much more consistent since introducing the magnesium supplement. This led me down a bit of a rabbit hole, scouring various subreddits looking for accounts of magnesium being used alongside Elvanse. It turns out there are loads of people that have found through supplementing with magnesium, that they have seen more consistent results or fewer side effects. There are even studies and articles suggesting that there could be a link between magnesium deficiency and ADHD. So I decided to give it a go with fairly low expectations. I’ve been quite taken back by the improvements I’ve seen pretty much immediately! I’m having a much deeper sleep at night, I’m getting back to sleep much quicker if woken in the night, I’m feeling much more refreshed in the morning, and most importantly of all I’m finding that the benefits I’m getting from Elvanse are much more consistent in the day (especially with my focus). I’m also finding that my side effects are much better in terms of things like headaches and irritability. I’m not sure if it’s just the fact that I’m sleeping better at night, so I’m waking up much more refreshed, the fact that magnesium can act as a muscle relaxant (relieving tension), or if I was just deficient of magnesium but I honestly can’t explain how much better I’m feeling for it. For anyone reading this who does fancy giving it a try, be a bit careful what you order. Magnesium is available in a variety of different versions, some of the cheaper forms can be a bit harsh on the stomach. Magnesium glycinate is supposed to have a high absorption rate with fewer side effects than many of the other forms. I managed to find a version that provides 102% of your recommended dose over 2 capsules, so I take 1 in the morning with my Elvanse and one in an evening (if anyone wants the details of the brand I went with, let me know) I wondered if anyone else had experimented with Magnesium and had similar results? Is Magnesium really worth it? Glycinate or Threonate for a beginner?
I have never been the type of person to do supplements, a lot of them at that, but from everything I have read and the little research I have done everyone, and I literally mean everything is saying how much magnesium is good for you and its something everyone should be doing, so I figured if I'm not going to be doing a bunch of supplements but there is 1 that can really help and overall improve my life I might as well try and do it, so if there was a supplement to help and for me to try and do I figured it would be magnesium I'm a 21 year old male, I would say I have a relatively good lifestyle, workout 3 times a week, I try to play sports at least once a week, I will say my diet is pretty bad, I eat healthy foods and fast foods at about a 50/50 split, I don't really sleep to well which is something that I've seen people say magnesium helps with as well just overall function So my question is, is it true, is magnesium really worth it to try? From everything ive read the best form is Glycinate or even threonate but im not to sure on that one, is that also true or are there others to do? Why is nobody talking about how just 125 - 300mg of magnesium per meal reversed depression in just 7 DAYS? Magnesium deficiency causes neuronal damage that can manifest as depression and over 50% of people are deficient. Magnesium is incredibly cheap and has little to no side effects.

Hi! So hot tip and just a reminder that our systems are very sensitive. There's nothing wrong with trying new supplements but keep in mind that there could be potential side effects. If you feel weird "POTS" symptoms after taking a new supplement, google it and check if it's a side effect! I've been crawling out of a bad relapse after a virus (it was prob covid) I got last month. I tried magnesium glycinate last night to help with sleep. Magnesium Gave Me Terrible Side Effects
Like the title says, I just got a terrible reaction from taking magnesium. This is the very first time I've tried it and while admittedly, it did help me with falling asleep and a general better sleep quality, I woke up just hours later feeling hot all over and dizzy. I only took 200mg with a meal about 2 hours before I went to bed. The only other medicine I take is Zoloft in the morning. I took it tonight (or I guess last night) to help with the shakiness, anxiety and insomnia that I've been getting while settling into Zoloft. Went to sleep at about 11pm and woke up an hour ago at 4AM feeling terrible. This really sucks because I've not been able to sleep much for weeks and this was my second resort after taking melatonin one night and getting almost the same effects. Magnesium Glycinate Gave Me Lasting Damage + Plea for Advice
Hello, I just want to warn of the dangers of this supplement, especially for those with prior insomnia and anxiety. I have had GAD since last December and despite removing the "stressors" by June I was still getting episodes of insomnia. I decided to try magnesium glycinate (recommended by ND for sleep). Initially, it increased the amount of deep sleep I had on my tracker, but left me fatigued when I woke up. The first day I took it the phrase "you know" started repeating in my head. This coincided with hyperactivity and decreased focus and attention, but I shrugged it off at the moment. I took it for a week and a half slightly increasing the dose each day. I started to feel VERY wired, on edge, low impulse control could not hold a thought too long in my head. The phrase repeating in my head proved to be an overwhelming distraction from thinking about anything else, and clouded my normal thought process. In the middle of the 2nd week of taking it I started jolting awake multiple times during the night (characteristic of glutamate toxicity, I later learned), and discontinued it on the 3rd night. I laid it off, nonchalantly confused as to why an amino acid found in food can have these effects, and waited for the effects to disappear. However the repeating phrase did not disappear but garnered intensity. To give you an idea of the cognitive impairment, I could not hold a conversation, focus or work upon an idea, or attentively listen and understand a school lecture, or summon the focus to remember something, as the phrase spliced in and interrupted anytime I wanted to use my brain for anything else. My problem solving and visualization got trashed. 1 night I took a high dose of DHA and the symptoms were gone for 15 minutes the next morning, only to reappear. Working out initially turned down the volume of the phrase (or was I just ignoring it?), but the effects wore off again. Now my brain has shifted from phrases to repeated 3-5 second music loops (earworms, or broken record syndrome). The phrases return whenever I try to listen to a podcast/audiobook, and the music when I listen to... music. It has gotten better over time though if I ignore it. My theory for the repetition is that it is fueled by high cortisol (HPA dysfunction) and mild ADHD, although confused by how it was triggered by neurotoxic insults. If there was brain damage the protocol is I should fix it soon. If anyone has advice for high cortisol+ADHD nootropics that would be a good fit, I would appreciate it. As for removing the repetition, I tried: * smartPS and feel like it worked but I get paresthesia from it. * NAC initially got rid of the glutamate toxicity, but has no effect afterwards on the repetition * ashwaghanda solved my anxiety and another unrelated issue, fatigue, as well as most of the repetition, but don't want to take it longterm for the possible thyroid issues, and possible GABA desensitization? * ALCAR (low dose) worked, but scared of TMAO.
