Most sources say it needs to be taken for a month or more but i wonder if anyone experienced more immediate effects on anxiety/mood? i read people had immediate negative effects (depression/allergy) but not positive ones Except maybe on sleep. The nootropicsdepot milk thistle scandal and why their low silychristin milk thistle might be inferior.
First of all, I would like to say. This is NOT a hit piece on nootropics depot. I still love this brand and buy from them because they have absolutely unparalleled quality/lab testing on their products. This is just some criticism on their very exaggerative and bordering untrue marketing of products at times. Nootropics depot and its community has strongly voiced a statement that is very likely untrue in regards to their milk thistle. I will explain this in my post and also why its negatively affected my trust for the company. What nootropics depot claims (paraphrased, not exact wording): "Silychristin from milk thistle strongly inhibits thyroid hormone transporter MCT8 which is adverse for thyroid health". Except, this is not true. This statement is stemming from one in-vitro study it seems and has not since been replicated in many of the in-vivo studies. First of all, a response from the Canadian health body: https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/food-nutrition/legislation-guidelines/acts-regulations/notices-proposal-notices-modification/list-permitted-supplemental-ingredients-enable-use-milk-thistle-seed-extract-silymarin/document.html Which states: However, these results are not replicated in in vivo test systems. There were no histopathologic changes (neoplastic and non-neoplastic) to the thyroid of male and female mice and rats following lifetime exposure (hormone levels and activity were not measured) (NTP, 2011). In addition, the results of a developmental neurotoxicity study conducted in mice (OECD 426 test guideline) administered MTE during gestation and lactation found no effects in the offspring following various sensory-motor reflex development testing (Barbosa et al., 2020). Given that the inhibition of thyroid hormone uptake (for example, T3 and T4) can lead to severe psychomotor retardation, the lack of effects observed in the offspring indicate that the effects observed in the in vitro assay are likely not relevant in vivo. And a newer in vivo study from just last month which looked at EXACTLY this, it compared silychristin IN ISOLATION to silybin in insolation to the whole silymarin complex: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/toxicology/articles/10.3389/ftox.2026.1796387/full Its findings? No significant change in T3 or T4 despite the rats being given HUGE doses of silychristin which oh wait... was a "potent inhibitor of MCT8"? Now in fairness to nootropicsdepot they seem to have released the low silychristin milk thistle around 2024? So they didn't have access to this 2026 study. Fair enough. But there still existed counter evidence to their claims at the time, there were in vivo studies available at the time too. Now why do I care about a wrong claim by ND? Because this is their unique selling point. They're the only company to sell a low silychristin (the "problematic compound") milk thistle. And they're getting these sales based on a false claim. Sure you could argue it's still a THEORETICAL concern, after all theyre only rat studies finding otherwise, not human trials. But the only evidence in their favour is an in vitro study and that is magnitudes weaker in evidence. In fact, you SHOULD take silychristin. We have significantly greater studies/evidence on the benefits of whole complex silymarin, compared to a low silychristin silymarin. We cannot conclude with certainty that a low silychristin milk thistle may be as effective as a higher silychristin milkthistle. After all silychristin may work under slightly different mechanisms, perhaps. Their product in my experience worked though, it lowered my liver enzymes, but again, it may have been less potent than the effects I could have been getting. I get that nootropics depot is potentially taking a cautious stance maybe, perhaps for the safety of their customers. But it worries me that they didn't consider all evidence available at the time and based decisions of just ONE in vitro study. This to me doesn't strike me as "looking out for customers", but rather digging aggressively for reasons to differentiate them from competitors. submitted by /u/SonderMouse to r/Biohackers [link] [comments]

I started taking milk thistle since it's good for my liver, i did a month straight at 1000 mg a day. Now it's just constipating me. Any idea why?
It was working great, i can feel glycogen fill up my muscles. My water shifted from extracellular to intracellular by fixing liver glucose handling. My face wasn't puffy, muscles were full it was great. my flat muscles were driven by glycogen depletion causing temporary insulin resistance at the muscle. Milk thistle helped so that insulin could once again drive glycogen and water into muscles. the problem is milk thistle started constipating me after a month. I stopped taking it and my muscle are flat again and my face is puffy. Any idea what I should do? submitted by /u/Ancient-Dust3077 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

The power of Milk Thistle!
For 3 years, I had elevated liver enzymes. Got a scan done with showed Fatty Liver in the beginning stage. Started Milk Thistle supplements late last year, taking them daily for about 4 months. Recently had a blood test done and my levels have significantly gone down, back to the middle of the normal range. submitted by /u/Psychological-Long94 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Will milk thistle powder ever come back in stock?
I can't take the capsules, the dosing doesn't fit my needs (100mg per meal) whereas you only sell 200mg... and not to mention the capsules are too expensive for me in comparison. I'm willing to buy a bulk 1-2 years worth if needs be... just so long as it comes back in stock :( submitted by /u/SonderMouse to r/NootropicsDepot [link] [comments]

Has anyone here actually noticed benefits from Milk Thistle for liver health?
I keep seeing Milk Thistle mentioned everywhere for “liver support” and detox. From what I understand, it contains something called silymarin, which is supposed to help protect liver cells and support liver function especially for people dealing with fatty liver, poor diet, alcohol intake, medications, or general lifestyle stress. submitted by /u/NatXtra_Synthite to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Milk thistle can affect the thyroid maybe
So I was thinking of taking milk thistle and in fact I have a few times. Once I had a little bit of pain in my liver and I took milk thistle and it was gone the next day. but I was doing a little bit of research and I found that it may affect the thyroid hormone transporter MCT8 path or something like that and might interfere with thyroid hormones. And there's no human studies to really say so they're not 100% sure I guess. I actually need to spend a little bit more time researching it. So I'm just curious if anybody here has taken milk thistle and did it ever make you feel tired or down or anything like that fatigue maybe because lowering thyroid hormone possibly. Is there anybody here that has hypothyroidism that has taken milk thistle? Also feel free to share anything you have to say about milk thistle and experiences you've had good, bad and or indifferent. submitted by /u/Rare-Calendar6126 to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Does milk thistle really help detox the liver?
Close family member got diagnosed with mild non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and I did some research (aka scrolling through reddit) and found that people use milk thistle to reduce their ALT/AST levels (inflamed liver enzymes found in bloodwork). I don't want to give any supplement advice to them in case it does any damage but generally, it looks rather safe and more importantly helpful for the liver. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge on this? submitted by /u/frontyardigans to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

COULD NOT get drunk when taking milk thistle + high dose vitamin C pre-alcohol? How?!
I went clubbing today and yes as a result drank alcohol. But no matter how much alcohol I had to drink I remained 100% sober? I genuinely have no idea how this is possible, and frankly it was quite disappointing as i wanted to get some sort of effect from the alcohol, but not even a light buzz.... Did the 200mg milk thistle + 2g slow release vitamin C + 10g glycine really FULLY counteract the alcohol? Surely not.. I'm also certain that I'm sober, I tried solving maths equations in my head, I can walk in a straight line, I feel the same cognitively, nothing about me feels different at all. Also I did have a few of the drinks mixed with red bull (caffeine) and a large meal prior to the alcohol. But so did my friends! And yet they got drunk and not me with less alcohol! I had 6 shots (vodka), 2 glasses red wine, a tequila...... Can someone please explain how I'm sober. I don't even drink, this was my second time ever in many years. EDIT: oh I also had 10g glycine too!! submitted by /u/SonderMouse to r/Biohackers [link] [comments]

Share your experience with milk thistle pls
I have fatty liver and I’ve been taking milk thistle for about two weeks. For years, I struggled with poor sleep. I would wake up with headaches, bloating, and constant exhaustion. I felt heavy, sluggish, and uncomfortable in my own body. Since starting milk thistle, my sleep has improved a lot. I wake up with more stable energy, no headaches, and much less bloating. I feel lighter overall, and my stomach doesn’t feel as swollen anymore. I’ve also read that it can help with digestion and constipation. I’m curious to hear what it has helped you with. If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d appreciate details like dosage, what you take it for, and how you schedule it. This has honestly been life-changing for me, but I plan to stop after two months because I’m concerned about my body getting too used to it. submitted by /u/GonimedeZ to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

Milk Thistle Has Changed My Life
This is not medical advice, but no joke I would have flares so bad I was bed bound for 3 days. I started taking Milk Thistle it hasn’t even been a month. I started out slow taking just 2 capsules before bed. Now I upped it to 3 capsules before bed… Mainly because I forget to take it in the morning. I’m going to try to space it out to 2 capsules in morning and night… But it’s truly amazing what this can do. If I miss a dose and have flare & can tell a night and day difference. Ever since I started taking it these are things I feel have changed: •Less bloating & Gas •Bowels are more frequent & consistent (I’m on adderall and usually don’t go unless I take it, but now that’s not an issue) •My metabolism is improving •My inflammation and lymph nodes aren’t clogged or inflamed. • Not swelling easily after doing daily activities. • Some hair growth and skin is not dull! However TMI, My bowels when upping dosage my stool is more mushy and softer and smells a little, but I think it’s from my body getting the toxins out. But overall I’m glad I took the chance. I know everyone is different… The first time I took it I took one capsule to see how my stomach would react and went from there. I just hope this helps someone! submitted by /u/Stylistguru to r/MCAS [link] [comments]

Extremely good boy taking his daily milk thistle!
Ziti is getting up there (he is 8-ish) and last year started on milk thistle for his liver. Very common thing for older buns, but he has taken to his medicine so much! We always make sure to offer it to his partner so she doesn’t feel left out, but she always runs away kicking 😅 hope she never needs this medicine some day! submitted by /u/drawingdead0 to r/Rabbits [link] [comments]

Only Feeling Better with Artichoke & Milk Thistle, Why?
Hi everyone, Long story short: after having COVID and being treated with antibiotics, my entire digestive system collapsed. I've been struggling for almost 3 years now and have tried so many things to fix it. My Main Symptoms: -Heart palpitations, especially 15–40 minutes after eating -Extreme fatigue -Brain fog -Restlessness and anxiety -Loose, unformed stool -Dysbiosis (confirmed) -Heartburn and upper abdominal discomfort What’s frustrating is that I react to almost everything, even plain rice during flare-ups. I do have clear triggers especially: -Alcohol (instant irregular heartbeat) -Coffee -Sugar/sweets -Canned foods -Legumes/beans -Fruits (I find this crazy) At some point, I suspected histamine intolerance, but I feel like the mechanism behind all this is more complex. What Has Helped Me: Magnesium L-glutamine MCT oil Artichoke & Milk Thistle supplements There was a 3-month period earlier this year when I was almost symptom-free, and I genuinely believed I had healed. But as soon as I stopped taking those supplements, everything came back, even worse. Now I’ve restarted magnesium and L-glutamine, and I feel a clear improvement when I add artichoke extract. It makes a big difference in digestion and overall energy. I’m also wondering if MCT oil played a more significant role than I initially thought, but haven’t reintroduced it yet. My Question: Is this whole thing really just about gut dysbiosis, or could it be more related to gallbladder or liver dysfunction? I just can’t understand how this can cause such a broad and systemic set of symptoms. I'm 29, female, otherwise healthy before all this started. Has anyone experienced something similar or found a clear explanation forward? Edit: I recently went to the doctor for a check-up, but honestly, I didn’t feel like I was listened to much. While I was explaining my symptoms, I was basically told: “Hmm, yeah, it happens after antibiotics. It takes a couple of years to recover.” I requested some specific tests for things like leaky gut and histamine intolerance, but they weren’t taken into consideration. However, they did run the standard blood tests for liver, thyroid, and vitamin levels—everything came back perfectly fine. I also had a gut X-ray and a full abdominal ultrasound; except for an excessive amount of gas, everything looked normal. In the end, I was diagnosed with IBS (what a surprise! 😅) and prescribed some gas-reducing medication, which I haven’t used. On the bright side, it was reassuring to know that my organs are healthy and I don’t have any deficiencies. As for my symptoms, they are still the same: sometimes I feel completely fine, but on other days, I barely have the energy to get out of bed. I don’t follow a strict diet, but I do stay away from coffee and alcohol. I eat everything else, although I’ve noticed that palpitations especially occur after consuming sugary foods. Today, I started taking sodium butyrate for the first time, and I’m planning to support it with L-glutamine to help repair my gut barrier. I’ll also continue taking apple cider vinegar in the mornings to support digestion, along with magnesium, milk thistle + artichoke supplements, and electrolytes to maintain normal functions. I’m also using heilerde (healing clay) to help bind toxins, and I’m planning to add oregano oil capsules to fight off what I suspect is an overgrowth of bad bacteria in my small intestine. I’m not sure if this is the “correct” way to approach healing, but right now, it feels okay for me. I’m still open to learning more, so if you have any suggestions or something that has helped you, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. submitted by /u/Healthy-Parfait-5577 to r/Microbiome [link] [comments]

Milk Thistle Experience
I have had an extremely positive experience with milk thistle, and I am not exactly sure why. I originally started on milk thistle about a month ago. I've had elevated liver enzymes in the last few blood tests, and a recent CAT scan showed that I had the beginnings of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), so I started it due to its literature evidence towards liver support. Since taking it, here are the positive effects I've had: (1) More positive mood and stability. Enjoy music more. More alert and self-assured. (2) Significantly increased libido (3) Decreased facial and stomach bloating (4) Less acne (5) Much less back pain and irritability. I am not sure why it has such a positive effect, especially with libido. The effect has persisted in the past month, and I haven't changed much in my stack since then. I generally eat healthy and don't have added sugar or many carbohydrates, but that diet was stable before starting thistle and seeing those effects. Any ideas? submitted by /u/adzberz to r/Supplements [link] [comments]

DR Said Milk Thistle is no good??
My GI Dr told me taking Milk Thistle was dangerous, he said the reason why but after 2 tries of trying to understand what he said (medical reason of why it’s not good) I gave up. Next time I see him I will ask him to write it down. Anyone heard Milk Thistle being no good? I was using it for my fatty liver, but I stopped 2 weeks ago since he told me to stop. He recommended “Vit E” but that gave me bad bad headaches and stomach pain, so after one dose that was it for me. Anyone on this Milk Thistle subject? submitted by /u/Cheeva381 to r/FattyLiverNAFLD [link] [comments]
