I rage-quit Spotify and started buying CDs. It's inconvenient and slow. But I rediscovered the lost joy of scrounging for music, the dopamine rush of owning a song, and albums.
I was frustrated and went back to the basics. And MAN, it IS a feeling to own the music - to feel like it's yours forever, like you actually put in some work to get the CD, and then ripping it, then transferring the files to your phone. I felt a tiny little dopamine boost with every song I downloaded. That's how I felt when I was a teenager. It also feels good that no copyright dispute or evil-company shenanigans can take away that song from me. And I didn't expect this but while I would wait for the ancient technology to do its thing, I would open iTunes and just listen to whole albums. There's nothing smart about iTunes. No recommended music, no algorithm, etc. Acquiring music became an activity that I spent time on, and so just as I used to do when I was 13, I ended up listening to whole albums. And my 13 year old emo self could have told me this already: many albums have hidden gems. There's music that you like when you listen to it once, the songs that make it to top-100, and then there's music that...grows on you. Songs that you didn't expect you'd like. The process of "scrounging" for your music through CDs and other mediums is exactly why in the MySpace days "listening to music" was a legit hobby. Music has a place in almost everyone's life today, but because there's almost zero effort into acquiring music anymore, zero wait, no cool older cousin who would introduce you to Nirvana, no friend who makes mixtapes, because everything is fast and the culture around discovery of music, etc. has significantly changed, the hobby of "listening to music" doesn't carry the same weight anymore. Back in the day it meant that you spent a significant portion of your time discovering and acquiring music. The inconvenience of it all means every song you discover and buy is special to you. The inconvenience helped me have the same personal and meaningful relationship to music and artists as I used to when I was younger. submitted by /u/pineconewashington to r/Music [link] [comments]

Physical music lovers, what keeps you buying CDs or vinyl?
Hey guys, I hope the post fits here. I’m taking a beginner uni seminar and have to do a small independent project, so I’m curious about people’s personal experiences. My question would be... Why do you still buy physical music (especially in second hand stores) even though streaming is so convenient? Is it about browsing and discovering music, the feel and look of physical media, sound quality, or maybe wanting a bit of distance from streaming services? And what does collecting mean to you? Would really appreciate any thoughts or experiences. Thank you guys in advance :)) submitted by /u/jiminiebambi to r/Cd_collectors [link] [comments]

Opinion Piece: Before you worry about fake CDs, ask yourself why you’re collecting in the first place.
It’s hard for me to think that any CD could realistically be counterfeit. CDs were mass produced for such a long period of time that the idea of one being “rare” feels almost impossible. I’m not at all worried about counterfeit CDs when I’m out digging, mostly because I just don’t believe someone with the skill to actually counterfeit a CD would bother going through the hassle of finding the correct mastering codes and etching them into discs just to scam collectors. Sure, there are a few releases from cult artists that could be tempting targets — I won’t name them because I don’t want to fuel that side of the hobby — but even then, the odds of running into a fake are incredibly low. And honestly, if I ever did end up with a counterfeit CD, I doubt I’d care much. As long as it plays and sounds fine, I’d probably still listen to it. To me, the whole topic of counterfeit CDs brings up a bigger question within the community: Why are you collecting? There are all sorts of reasons people collect things, and I’m not knocking any of them. But back when we were buying CDs from Best Buy twenty years ago, we didn’t pop them open and analyze every little detail. We just bought the album, listened to it, and enjoyed it. A lot of my CDs back then weren’t even perfect albums, but they still became my albums — the ones I had in constant rotation. If a CD had twelve songs, that was twelve tracks I’d live with, over and over, like them or not, because it was one of the few I owned. That experience made each disc personal. Now I see posts from people asking what the “most collectible” CDs are, and I get why some folks react negatively. When you ask that question, it sounds less like you love music and more like you’re trying to collect status objects — what you think others want, not what you actually want. When I’m out digging, I’m looking for specific artists or albums that mean something to me. If you find yourself asking what CDs you should collect, then maybe you’re not collecting CDs — you’re just collecting things. TLDR: Counterfeit CDs don’t matter nearly as much as why people are collecting in the first place — and it feels like a lot of folks are chasing value or validation instead of genuine enjoyment submitted by /u/nospaces to r/Cd_collectors [link] [comments]

For what reason do you still buy CDs?
Today I was talking to my friend about how I'm liking to buy CDs and how it is enjoyable to listen to albums in the way they were made to be listened to. But he told me that it is a waste of money and that I could listen to the same music on YouTube or Spotify. And I couldn't really reply to him with something but "hmm... I don't know... it's different". I really love this new hobbie of mine, but answer him with "it's nice to have a physical collection" (which is one of the reasons that I like CDs) didn't feel a good response. submitted by /u/Faroela to r/Cd_collectors [link] [comments]
