Use an impact gun on those pulley bolts. You can run the shaft of a pry bar through the bolts such that they can't turn while you're applying tq to one of the bolts. You can use an oil filter wrench on the snout or even the body of the pulley to hold it while you're applying tq to the bolts. A 20mm socket is probably too big. I think those are 10 or 11 mm.

I took a picture of this Icon filter socket set, as I usually take pics of deals to get, because my harbor freight app cart is too full lol. I screenshotted this when the new deals came out, as it was dirt cheap. 2 days later I checked and it was removed from the sale, no trace anywhere. The coupon rung up as invalid/expired, but I showed the manager it didn’t expire till June, and she overrode it and gave me the sale price. In sure we’ve all noticed the growing shift from one-piece, spin-on oil filters to the paper canister/cartridge filters. I know they used to have the canister/cartridge filters “back in the day” before shifting to the ubiquitous spin-on filters. Why are we going back to them? I’ve heard they are superior filters? If that’s the case, why did we shift away from them in the first place? Disclaimer: I’m not a mechanic. I’m just a guy with enough knowledge to get myself into trouble turning wrenches in my driveway. I just got a 2017 Chevy Silverado 2500 that sat for a at least a year and I am sure the oil change was even longer. I am definitely not an expert but I’ve done my own oil, oil filters, brake pads, and rotors on all my and my spouse’s cars for 15 years. I just enjoy doing it and learning. I drained the oil then wanted to go to the oil filter. I went out and bought the matching metal oil filter cap, but it would not budge and it eventually stripped. I decided to buy a strap oil filter wrench since it was starting to get messed up, but it started to just crinkle the oil filter. I decided to try the screw driver method as a last ditch effort, but that just made the filter starts to shred as I turned it. This thing is not budging at all. I decide to try to cut out the now shredded filter to get to only part that screws in. I sprayed penetrating oil everywhere around it and waited a half hour then started hammering a screw driver counterclockwise into the holes on the inside of the filter near where it screws ins, yet still no success. Honestly, I completely understand I’m not an expert, but this filter seems completely stuck. Any other methods I can try? 2004 Volkswagen Passat. 1.8T Engine. 152,000 miles. I am not car savvy, so please bear with me cause there is a lot I am unfamiliar with. I also really wish I could just learn to change my own oil, but I am currently disabled and only have use of one arm. Background: On Monday I brought my car in to the mechanic to get an oil change and full inspection. I've been to this mechanic before, but found out from a friend afterwards that it is under new ownership as of recent. They said the full inspection did not find anything that needed immediate attention (some older tubes had a small amount of seepage/car needs new brake fluid in a few months). All things I was planning on doing with my next paycheck or two. When I left on Monday everything seemed to run smoothly and the car sounded great. I ran a few errands after picking it up and then went home. In total I drove less than 10 miles. On Tuesday I did not drive anywhere and it sat parked the entire day. Today (Wednesday) I had an appointment and turned it on for the first time since getting home from the auto shop. When I was pulling out of my driveway, the oil light came on and then flashed STOP in capitalized, bright red letters right after. The car immediately went from sounding smooth to sounding like a diesel engine. After I turned it off/got out I saw a large pool of oil coming from under the car, and when I looked underneath there was oil pouring from somewhere close to the engine. My driveway is on a small hill so I was able to ride it back down in neutral and with car off. After parking I checked underneath and saw that large amounts of oil were still pouring down and there was a steady trail of oil on the driveway from my car coming back down. Then my ex-mechanic landlord came over to look at it and he was the one that pointed out the gas filter has been crushed. My landlord seemed almost offended by what he saw and after looking underneath said, "I don't understand why any good mechanic would do something like this". He said the oil filter looks like it was crushed by a wrench when they were tightening it. He also pointed out that they used non-synthetic oil and said I should ask them about that as well. My question: I am wondering if all of this is on the mechanic like people are telling me, or could there be something else going on? It's getting towed there tomorrow and I'm going there with it. The few people I have talked to about this have said that this is the mechanics fault and that they should be fully responsible for fixing it. From what they've said, plus everything I have researched, it does seem like it is a problem on their end. I just want to know what other people on here have to say about it before I go in to talk to them tomorrow. The last thing I want to do is come off as a stubborn a-hole that thinks they know more about cars than the people that work with them everyday. My first two posts on this ended up gaining a lot of attention so i thought i would give a final update - had my mechanic come out & take a look because no matter what this thing wouldn’t move. he tried using the strongest, biggest pliers, grips & wrenches possible to grip this thing & then we used all of our strength to loosen it & NOTHING. i wish i had a video because its honestly ridiculous. so anyway, we cut 90% of the filter off & then went back to hammer & chisel which finally got it to at least spin, very slowly. however once it had been undone 90% of the day (after like 30 mins of hammering away) it just spun on the thread at the bottom… it was cross threaded from the start. clearly someone put the oil filter on, it didn’t go on properly & instead of taking it back off & doing it up nicely, they forced it on, probably with an impact gun. fucking pricks. anyways, the oil filter housing (or filter cartridge bracket, as peugeot calls it) has been ordered… from toyota because peugeot cost more than double the price & takes triple the time to get here?? the previous oil filter is completely decimated along with my spirit. submitted by /u/harrryelo to r/mechanic [link] [comments]

Me with the neglected '77 or '78 Zetor again. This thing is somehow simultaneously a train wreck of neglect, and an engineering masterpiece clearly designed to be maintained by a monkey with a hammer and chisel. And to last until the heat death of the universe, unless rust kills it first. The drum shaped air filter on the left is bigger than some whole engines I have seen. It makes the air spin around fast such that particles get flung out to the side, where dirt accumulates in a bucket you can tip out every now and then. After that precleaning, air gets sucked through a freaking three gallon bucket of oil, like the engine is breathing through a bong or hookah but with engine oil in it. So any dirt that makes it past the prefilter gets caught in the oil bath. I expected to see an asphalt-like gunk, but found oil looking clean enough to use in an engine. That prefilter must be incredibly effective, for the oil bath to stay basically clean. And it has a centrifugal oil filter! I pulled the cover off to inspect, and the damned thing is shiny! That gray metal part with the nozzles on top is the filter, it sits on a spigot with bearing surfaces so the filter can rotate freely. Some oil jets out of two opposing nozzles, causing it to spin at high speed. Most of the oil doesn't go out the nozzles though, instead getting centrifuged inside the filter so carbon and other particles go to the outside and get trapped while clean oil runs down the middle. I have to figure out how to open up this filter, it is supposed to be cleansble and reusable indefinitely but the damned oil filter needs a bigger wrench to open up than the rear axle assembly. May have to do the "user service" version of just soaking it in diesel overnight rather than the "workshop maintenance" detail strip, both are mentioned in the manual. The previous owner said he didn't know how to maintain it, and his father didn't either, it was the late grandfather's tractor that they just kept using for decades. From the thick undisturbed gunk over the oil fill cap, it's obvious this hasn't had an oil change in years if not decades. Yet, the oil is basically golden with just a fine haze of charcoal gray in it. Centrifugal oil filters like this are apparently common in ships and other large diesel equipment, and it seems simple enough. I haven’t done my oil in a year and wasn’t paying attention when I was trying to remove the filter. I was using my new channel lock oil filter wrench and actually tightening it. As you can see, I’ve royally screwed the filter trying to get it off now. The screwdriver method did not work. I’ve got a GEARWRENCH 1/2" Drive Nylon Strap Oil Filter Wrench coming tomorrow, but wondering if that will even work or I should try a different method now. I just acquired a 2010 Camry 2.5L engine, and am about to do an oil change. It is not a spin on filter, you remove a cap and replace the element. Anyway, if any of you have worked on these, how important is it to have the special tool with the tabs, etc., rather than just a normal style filter wrench. Hand tight is PLENTY Just had the longest oil change of my life on a new to me truck because the filter was SO tight that none of my normal tricks worked. I was changing the oil in my wife's Outback today with one of those older-fashioned oil filter wrenches...the kind that has 3 interlocking segments and flops around. I've only changed the oil on this car once before and had no problem, but this time, the wrench got stuck between the filter and the whatever was above it. And I mean stuck. Of course, I had just cracked the seal enough for oil to begin trickling out coating everything. I managed to unscrew the filter by hand eventually (after attempting to dislodge the wrench with a variety of other tools), but the whole thing was needlessly aggravating. I had to spray down a lot of tools with Ballistol at the end of it all. I decided to look at newer options and found a wide variety.
