4 years later: My custom F-550 overland truck build is finally [off] road ready... The highs and lows of a composite truck camper build.
Almost 5 years ago, I came across a home-built expedition vehicle / overland truck camper on a road trip (u/andrewmuse: this is all your fault), and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I sold my product design company and went all in on building my own overland rig. My journey started on Reddit, so it felt like time to share an update here. Broad strokes on the build: 2024 Ford F-550 Lariat diesel, 84” CA (19,500 GVWR) Full composite monocoque camper shell with custom 4-point subframe Finished weight, full fuel / no water: 15,260 lbs Front: 5,940 Rear: 9,320 Super single conversion (Continental 335x80r20) with no lift 95-gallon fresh water / 40-gallon grey water R20+ insulation R6 structural core R12 closed-cell spray foam R6 recycled PET acoustic panels + air gap EcoFlow power system with 800W solar and 10kWh batteries: this runs the refrigerator, fans, lights, etc. indefinitely Timberline 2.0 5kW diesel heater kept it warm in Colorado in February at 10,800 feet / 2°F Recycled PET wall panels Hi-Macs counters, backsplash, and shower pan Custom windows, which were probably my biggest mistake and definitely the biggest time sink It’s been a really fun, really difficult truck camper build. Way more time, money, and problem-solving than I expected — but I’m getting excited to finally use it with my family this summer. I’m still debating whether to add exterior storage boxes. Right now I’m leaning no, but that could change. My 20-month-old daughter loves it - can't put a price on that. Ask me anything about the build, the composite shell, the F-550 platform, weight, insulation, power system, or what I’d do differently. submitted by /u/mwtownsend to r/TruckCampers [link] [comments]

We just passed 100,000km on our Six and a half years overland adventure across the Americas
Hey folks, we thought it was about time we checked back in here and did a bit of an update about our overland adventure in our 1976 VW kombi. Back in 2019, we shipped Ruby from the UK to New York, which the intention of spending 12 month ths exploring the US and Canada. In February 2020, with our visa running low and still loads to see in the US, we popped into Baja for what was supposed to be a mini Mexican adventure. Then the pandemic hit and the land borders to the US closed for foreigners and stayed closed for over a year. We actually ended up as refugees and were given a special refugee visa by the Mexican government. We would eventually spend a year and a year travelling in Mexico before deciding to follow our friends down the Pan American highway, because it sounded like a laugh. So without any real preparation, we ended south through Central America, ticking off all the highlights along the way. Once we reached Panama, we had no choice but to ship around the Darien Gap. We used a company called Overland Embassy run by a guy named Alejandro who had driven his camper up to Baja from Panama before his trip was cancelled by the pandemic. We shipped to Cartagena and continued to roughly follow the Pan American Highway, veering off whenever something sounded interesting. It would lead us through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia Chile and then Argentina. We popped to Uruguay, where we left our camper and both return to the UK for the first time in 5 years. Once we returned we only had one goal, which was to make the final drive to Ushuaia. We final arrived 1969 days after we first arrived in New York. We definitely won't win any prizes for how quickly we arrived there, but I think travelling slower allows you to experience so much more anyway. With the end of the world complete, we spent so e time exploring the island of Tierra Del Fuego, which translates to Land of fire. Its kind of ironic because camp fires are banned there. A better name for it anyway would be Land of constant wind! We then had a region that we had been looking forward to since the moment we decided to drive south... Patagonia Split between Chile and Argentina, Patagonia is a vast region with looming snow capped mountains, covered in glaciers. The waters form picturesque lakes underneath the peaks. Glacier rivers carve there way through the mountains and we saw many people plucking giant salmon straight out of the waters! We would eventually spent almost 4 months there, leaving just as the autumn leaves were starting to fall. As I type this, we find ourselves in Brazil, camped next to a little reservoir. Our visa is about to run out, so we plan on returning to Argentina one final time to savour to delicious Mendoza malbecs one final time. We will then return to Brazil and explore the northern regions before ticking of the final countries in this continent l, ending in Venezuela. It's been a truly life changing trip and we hope our travels inspire others to may e one day follow in our tracks. If we can basically do it I planned in a vehicle that turns 50 this year, then there's no reason why anybody can't come down. We have met Overlanders all shapes and sizes. We once met a solo German Overlanders who was almost 70 and driving in an antique truck. We have met solo female travellers. Families. Overlanders from all parts of the world. We have also met so many amazing local people who showed us incredible kindness and welcomed us into their lives. Feeding us, providing us with booze and letting us use their washing machine and shower. We are super excited to see where this trip takes us next and can't wait to see more of South America. If you are interested you can follow our travels and find way more photos and videos on our Facebook, Instagram and YouTube accounts... Just search for The Kombi Chronicles. I'm also happy to answer any questions you might have about our experiences over the last six and a half years. submitted by /u/KombiChronicles to r/overlanding [link] [comments]

Overlanding from Europe (Cyprus), across Africa to South Africa! Just made it to your beautiful country!
Thanks for the warm welcome South Africa! I finally arrived after one year crossing Africa and the west coast. I'm the first person from my country (Cyprus) to ride all the way down to South Africa! Although I'm sure you have seen many types making the trip down here, not too many from our small island have tried! Finally made it to South Africa, and honestly, I can’t believe I’m saying that. This journey has been intense. There were moments I really thought I wouldn’t make it, but here I am. It feels surreal seeing familiar faces after so long on the road. There’s so much to catch up on, and now I can finally start sharing everything that’s happened along the way, having good WiFi again, haha. If anyone is around and wants to meet up, hit me up! I’ll be riding down to Cape Town at the end of the month. If you're somewhere along the route and want a visit, let me know. It would be awesome to connect with people while I’m moving again. Here’s to the next stretch of the adventure. Happy to hear any tips as well! ps: if you wanna follow me along the road you can check me https://www.youtube.com/@CyprusNiko or instagram the same name! submitted by /u/cyprusnikos to r/southafrica [link] [comments]

Need a capable family Overlander
I am on the hunt. I need to eventually switch from my Raptor overlanding build to something that can fit the whole fam. Wife and I plus our 5 kids. So 3 row is a must, and will likely have to get a trailer setup for storage/cooking/2nd rooftop tent. What do you recommend? I have an idea of what the right answer is. But would love the community input, I bet yall land on the same answer. Here are some pics of my current rig. Next overlanding trip is in June, to the Smokey Mountains… I’ll be looking to make the change after this trip. submitted by /u/HaYterAyD to r/overlanding [link] [comments]

11 Countries. 5 Months. Overlanding West Africa - From the Sahara to the Rainforest [OC]
My partner and I spent 5 months driving our Land Rover Defender through 11 West African countries: Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, and Cameroon. To me this is one of the world's most challenging overland routes - and one of the most rewarding! Key lessons learned: Visas require planning: Some you can get on the border, others require letters of invitation and additional supporting documentation. You can get them all on the road, but they require some careful planning and consideration Roads vary wildly: Paved highways in Senegal, challenging mud tracks in Guinea/Cameroon (especially after intense rain) Cultural immersion is everything: Spending time in villages, attending ceremonies, learning basic greetings in local languages opened doors everywhere Overlanding challenges: Fuel quality issues, spare parts scarcity, border bureaucracy - patience is essential but there is always a way! Safety reality: Despite reputation, we felt welcomed everywhere. Use common sense, don’t drive at night, ask locals for advice Practical tips: Best timing: November-March (dry season). We hit rainy season in Cameroon (and had mechanical issues as well) which made it much more challenging, but still doable Carnet de Passage: Really recommend for anyone doing this trip. Carnet is the way to get your car through Africa as hassle-free as possible Yellow fever certificate: Required at most borders French is crucial: English rarely spoken outside Ghana/Nigeria/Gambia (we don’t speak it and it was tough) Fuel: Carry 60L+ extra. Stations sparse, quality varies (filter everything / change filter regularly) Money: CFA franc in 8 countries (bring euros to exchange), different currencies in others Camping: Wild camping widely accepted with permission. Always ask village chief first Unexpected highlights: Mauritania’s untouched beauty - we spent 3+ weeks in the desert… I could still be there! AMAZING! Benin's voodoo culture - authentic, not touristy, deeply spiritual Guinea-Bissau's Varela - pristine, barely visited. A paradise! The kindness everywhere - invited into homes, helped with repairs, guided to hidden spots The photography challenge was managing extreme humidity (rainforest), dust (Sahara), and in honesty having the motivation to grab the camera after draining days back-to-back. This route really isn't for everyone - it's physically demanding, logistically complex, and requires serious vehicle preparation. But I think it’s fair to say it is one of the world's last true overland adventures! And I reckon for many people on here - something you’ll be itching to get your teeth in unless you’ve tackled it already! Happy to answer questions about routes, border crossings, cultural etiquette, vehicle prep, or specific countries! 🚙 submitted by /u/Crafty-School5838 to r/travel [link] [comments]

New to overlanding? Stop overbuying and read this
When I started overlanding, I packed like I was invading a small country. Three years later, here's what actually gets used every single trip: Power matters more than you think: Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen2 - 50min recharge speed+ 10 ports Kitchen gear that doesn't waste space: Jetboil Flash - Because waiting 10 minutes for coffee when you're tired sucks RTIC 45 - Keeps meat frozen 4 days vs cheap coolers that quit after 1 GSI Pinnacle - Fits everything including stove in one package Sleep system that actually works: Coleman Dark Room - Waking up at 5am from sun exposure ruins your day REI Sleep System - Being cold at night makes you want to go home HEST Mattress - Bad sleep = dangerous driving next day Recovery gear I've actually used: ARB Recovery Kit - Pulled 3 vehicles out including my own VIAIR 400P - Air down for sand, air up for pavement Maxtrax - Worth every penny when you're stuck alone I'm still learning:p What's the gear that's actually earned its keep in your rig? Overlanding across the globe in an American muscle car (V8 Dodge Challenger)
I've never shared on here in the past, but I thought I'd show something different. A build that has possibly never been seen before in the overlanding community. My manual V8 overlanding muscle car has been an incredible choice for many reasons, while obviously limiting my experience on the road when compared to a traditional 4x4 build. It breaks the ice with strangers while providing plenty of joy to both myself and locals that come across it. I have a stove installed in the hood, a hitch-mounted hammock system, a fridge in the back powered by a 100w solar panel, a lift kit, and some workout equipment for the road. I carry 50L of fuel in the trunk of my car. It works. I couldn't imagine overlanding in any other vehicle at this time, although sometimes I wish I had a Jeep with doors that would come off. I had this car for a couple years prior to deciding that I would try overlanding with it, basically thinking that I already have a car, why not try it out? I didn't buy this for the explicit purpose of overlanding. If this intrigues you, ask some questions or check out my full walkthrough of the overlanding muscle car here: https://youtu.be/_-n5nwNCdBw submitted by /u/revolutionaryworld1 to r/overlanding [link] [comments]

Overlanding Angola: Insane rock formations, waterfalls and a hauntingly beautiful coast
Just completed a 4-week overland journey through Angola in our Land Rover Defender and had to share the experience. This is a country that feels underrated and under-explored so wanted to share some inspiration and tips for those who just love travel. Places we explored: Pedras Negras - Mystical black rock formations that emerge from the morning mist. Locals have fascinating stories about their spiritual significance. The landscape feels ancient and untouched. Vanessa Shipwreck - The contrast between desert meeting Atlantic Ocean is stunning. The rusted Vanessa shipwreck is accessible but off-road experience is vital Calandula Falls - Africa's second-largest waterfall by volume. The falls are far less touristy than Victoria Falls, and you can get incredibly close (and even camp right by the falls) Colinas Vermelhas - These otherworldly red rock formations near Lubango are like Mars on Earth. Drone perspectives reveal the true scale - they're far more dramatic than photos suggest. Arrive at golden hour for the most intense colors. Namib Desert Coastline - Exploring the rugged and remote Angolan coastline - requires 4x4 and self-sufficiency but totally worth it (and there's a lot of coast to explore) Practical overlanding notes: Self-sufficiency is essential: rooftop tent, solar panels, spare parts Fuel stations can be 200+ km apart in remote areas Roads vary from smooth tarmac to challenging sand tracks Wild camping is generally accepted and safe Visa on arrival available for most nationalities I believe this is one of Africa's most under-explored destinations but the infrastructure is improving rapidly whilst still feeling genuinely remote and untouched. You'll have iconic locations almost entirely to yourself. Hope you are feeling a bit inspired. Happy to answer any questions about route planning, costs, or specific locations! 🚙 submitted by /u/Crafty-School5838 to r/travel [link] [comments]

What is the worst part of Overlanding?
Over the last few weeks I have seen a lot of nihilism, gatekeeping and overall general negativity toward Overlanding as a hobby. People hating on Overlanding “creators,” snarkiness about everything being overpriced, and that nobody really “overlands.” Personally my relationship with the hobby is overall positive. It’s helped me learn to slow down, allowed me to make new friends, and brought me great memories with my dad. Is it the excessive consumerism? Is it the shameless shilling? Is it the obsession with labeling everything? I don’t get it but I hope to see what others think. submitted by /u/LinoCappelliOverland to r/overlanding [link] [comments]

Budget Overland Builds
Always enjoy seeing non-traditional/budget friendly overland builds. In my case, that build started with a 90’s OBS Ford. Bought this truck from the original owner, an 84 year old woman, who hauled horses with this thing its whole life. Truck was completely stock when purchased and has since transformed to what it is today. Has a coil spring conversion for the TTB from Solo Motorsports, 35” Kenda’s, Ultra 114’s, Warn VR Evo 12s, Kuat IBEX rack and NaturNest Tent & awning to name a few things. Overall I’m well south of $30k in this truck, probably closer to $22k. Here’s a full walkthrough on YouTube: https://youtu.be/p_RPDAwZ8i0 Let’s see your more budget-friendly or non-traditional builds. submitted by /u/Mo_bronco to r/overlanding [link] [comments]

Psychos in Overland. I was walking my dog and watched them cut someone off at Broadway & Iliff and they sped into the neighborhood. I was crossing the street with my dog and I had to jog to avoid them so I flipped them off and this happened. Thank you to the people at the end for intervening!!

Humans lived inland in North America 1,000 years before scientists suspected. Stone tools and other artifacts found in Idaho hint that the First Americans lived here 16,000 years ago — long before an overland path to the continent existed. It’s more evidence humans arrived via a coastal route.
