Just got this house and it has an overall strong musty smell. I have been cleaning and washing/throwing out fabric stuff (and trashed a large old chest that was a big contributor) and it has helped but I’d like to take it to the next level. My thought would be to run an ozone generator while I’m not there as the house can sit for up to 3 months empty. Potentially I could use a timer or even a smart plug and control it from anywhere. Thoughts? Worth it? Hi everyone, i apologize in advance if this is the wrong sub to ask this in, please direct me where to go if so! The carpet in my house stinks (first like cat urine, now it just smells like dirty old carpet)… i’ve shampooed it multiple times & allowed it to dry thoroughly every time, i’ve used 2 different enzyme cleaners and i’ve been sure to do a few water-only rinses between products to avoid any reactions between the cleaners, im completely out of ideas on what else i can do. at this point im planning to just replace the carpet when i can afford it, but that wont be for awhile. i’m planning to use an ozone generator to help with the smell until im able to fit new carpet into the budget, and am hoping someone can help me make sure i’ve got everything out of the area that needs to be in order to run this machine safely. i know my pets and myself have to vacate the area, and that i need to ventilate the area for several hours after the machine turns off. i’ve also read that any valuable artwork should be removed. do i need to move my rocks/crystals out of the room as well? electronics? i’m planning to use it in one room (around 12’ x11.5’) and running the machine for an hour. is that a sufficient amount of time? submitted by /u/httpjaeger to r/hvacadvice [link] [comments]

So one of our cats a few months ago decided to spray/pee in our living room a few times. We've used the enzyme cleaner stuff and ran a carpet cleaner to clean the whole room. We still get a whiff of cat pee here and there. So we want to run an ozone generator in that room to take care of the urine odors. If we put up a plastic sheet on the entry ways to that room (lower level, front of house), and tape it so its as air tight as we can get it, can we have the cats upstairs in another area of the house with windows open, door shut with a towel at the base of the door? Our home has radiant heat, so no vents connecting rooms (the only AC vents are upstairs and the unit itself is in the attic). Okay so my mom called someone to MY ROOM to ozone it, because the built in wardrobe had mold at the north side. The humidity was 99% percent in there and like 15 degrees. And yes, there was mold. So I searched beforehand that it's highly destructive to a personal/gaming room, but we just had a big argument and she STILL DID IT. I came home, I couldn't even breathe in there, started coughing getting dizzy. This was 3 hours after that. And after three days I finally went back in. And now, we just found out that the rubber on my noise blocking door degraded, doesn't block anything. Also some of my clothes started having this really bad smell to it even after washing. And now she's talking about some "we might have to do it again" EVEN TOUGH SHE FUCKING PROMISED ME WE WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN. I’m moving into a post-war house in Australia, built about seventy years ago. Although it’s been renovated to a large extent, the all too familiar old-house smell remains. I presume a mould check was done during renovation, but until I can confirm this, I’d like to sort this out. Given the original doors and limited renovation on the exterior, I presume it hasn’t been gutted, so that could be the source of the lingering aroma. I hear ozone generators are great at dealing with this, but to what extent? Should I be aware of anything, and what price range should I be looking at for a good one? My wife wants to run an Ozone generator tomorrow while im at work, kids are at school and she gets an oil change. Will my tanks (reef and 2 freshwater) be alright if she just unplugged everything while it runs (timer goes up to 2 hours on gen) and an hour or 2 so everything get O2 back in the house? Books, suitcases, wooden furniture etc. I'm trying to look into Ozone generators, as my current best bet seems to be sticking it all in a room, with one. I've read some horror stories on them, but also plenty of people seem to use them with no issues, so I'm a bit torn on chancing it atm. 5 days ago my dog was sprayed by skunk outside and she came in the house I didn’t let her sit on any furniture and took her right up to bath. I got most of the bulk smell out with the baking soda, dish soap peroxide trick or whatever and used skunk shampoo and her normal shampoo. But somehow just her running through the house not sitting on anything completely left the entire house smelling like a skunk. It’s really bad and I don’t understand how it’s this bad. We have used skunk spray stuff for the house, cleaned floors opened windows. Nothing is working. So I was thinking about getting either ozone generator or a hydroxyl machine. Problem is the hydroxyl machine is really expensive and no one keeps them nearby to rent. And the ozone generator is cheaper but I’m weary about what’s left behind after it’s done because I know you can’t be in the house for a while after it happens because of it being dangerous to breathe . I could maybe bite the bullet and buy a hydroxyl machine and then I always have it in case this happens again or for other things too but I heard those don’t really treat stuff on the surfaces of everything it’s more for the actual air? I recently had two bedrooms primed with Zinsser BIN and then painted in order to seal a horrible chemical fragrance odor in my house. Unfortunately it didn’t work. I don’t know if they should have applied two coats or let it cure longer before painting over it (there was at least 24 hours in between) or what. It’s been 4 weeks and one room still has a bad odor (slightly different than before but still terrible) and the other room is okay except for its closet (which received the BIN and paint), which also still smells. i had the trim redone in both rooms and they look nice so I’d like to avoid tearing out the drywall but the smell is so bad I can’t use one of the rooms. Have any of you used an ozone generator for this situation? I’m terrified of them but if it were to work that would be wonderful. Hello everyone! I’m not sure this is entirely relevant to this subreddit, but you guys are super knowledgable so I thought I’d try my luck! Been looking into ozone generators for my house, and I am confused with the information I have read. People say that ozone generators should be used in a completely sealed room and all living beings should be kept far away until the room has been ventilated sufficiently. This sounds like good advice, however I work in a hotel where ozone generators are often used to deodorise the rooms between guests. We put the ozone generator in, set the timer and shut the room, with a sign on the door so nobody enters. People are able to safely rest and work in the other rooms. Why can these be used in just one room with a shut door, but in the home it is suggested to completely leave? I live in a long-term housing facility ran by a nonprofit organization that was created to help address the homelessness crisis. The building is a former hotel that is now being used for low income individuals and ones transitioning into more permanent housing. Bedbugs have been an ongoing issue with a handful of residents. I’ve noticed that When tenants move out, staff run ozone generators in the rooms, sometimes for multiple days at a time, and then move new tenants in shortly afterward. While rooms may technically be cleaned between tenants, my concern is the timing. From my past experience using ozone generators, running one for extended periods requires more than basic cleaning. Surfaces, furniture, carpets, and the space itself need proper remediation and time before being safe to occupy. I have read and been told that prolonged ozone exposure can affect materials like paint and carpet at a molecular level, making them unsafe even after the machine is turned off. When ozone is used improperly or without adequate airing out and wiping down, the room itself can become hazardous. You can often smell ozone in the hallways here, which strongly suggests these precautions are not being followed. I have lived here two years with my boyfriend, who is on an ankle monitor awaiting trial and therefore cannot leave except for work. Alongside the safety concerns, I have experienced ongoing issues with staff entering my room and removing my personal property without consent. Even things that I spent most of my life acquiring at sentimental value things I will not ever be able to replace amongst other things. Through my own investigation, I believe staff are stealing and reselling tenant belongings along with donated items. This is not only happening to me. Other tenants have also noticed items missing. I raised these concerns internally and eventually filed a police report. After that, the situation escalated. Entire boxes of my belongings were taken from my room. This felt retaliatory. Staff here are extremely tight knit. Many are family members or closely connected, and they protect each other. Anyone acting unethically or illegally appears shielded by the group. To the point where my neighbor and her daughter will wear some of the articles of clothing that were stolen from me right in front of me it’s appalling how this organization is a perfect example of nepotism. Thick as thieves. to think they work for a nonprofit would make them any different than the exact clients and people they’re meant to advocate,help getting them set up for a better life a brighter future. I think it’s foolish to think that even after millions of dollars granted to these entities that they are conducting themselves in such a way where they do have the most genuine intentions . to not let greed get in the way of the overall goal and reason why they became a nonprofit organization in the first place to help to make things better we’d like to think that that is what is going to happen that they’ll be true and try to make the world a better place. Not to say that all NPO‘s are corrupt and fraudulent, so please don’t take it that way I just have seen a very ugly side to the one that runs the operations and is in charge of the staff that work where I live. Where I should seek solace and can feel supported and safe. Sadly there’s a lot of talk. There’s a lot of talk of all these great things that they offer you and that they truly care cause they’ve been there and done that and they want to see people succeed in and how their happiness stems from helping others that they are walking beside you. And all I know is that it’s all i know is that they talk. There’s a lot of talk talking, but it only seems to get worse. and actions don’t reflect what the words. My neighbor and her daughter both work for the nonprofit. I specifically named them in a police report as being involved in thefts. Since then, I feel even more intensely targeted. There is clear hostility toward me, and I believe it is because I have been outspoken and refused to stay silent. I am genuinely afraid for my life and for my partner’s life. Based on my past experience with ozone generators, I believe they may be running them in or near my room intentionally. When I am in the room, I experience head pressure, stomach pain, facial tightness, itching skin and scalp, and a noticeable change in how I look and feel. When I leave and get fresh air, these symptoms improve. I miss being with my partner. My home. I have been staying with a friend for safety. One night, I attempted to return and intentionally left the window and door open for ventilation the small fan blowing. despite extreme cold. When my partner realized the front door was a jar, he felt uncomfortable because he likes his privacy, so I ended up showing the door and Within a short time of being back inside with airflow restricted again, I became physically unwell. When I looked in the mirror, I looked noticeably different. My friend later confirmed that my appearance had changed significantly in just over an hour. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. That same night, my neighbor’s daughter was working the front desk when I arrived. I heard her immediately go to her mother’s room and loudly talk, which felt like a signal that I was back. Another major red flag was the window. I repeatedly found it closed after I had intentionally left it open for ventilation. This happened more than once. My boyfriend also believed he had opened it when it was actually closed, which raised further concern that airflow was being intentionally restricted. Food in the room also seemed affected. Bread that had just been delivered tasted extremely stale and off. Almonds I eat regularly tasted wrong. From what I understand, ozone exposure can alter food and materials, and everything in the room felt abnormal. My boyfriend has remained there due to his ankle monitor and has been exposed far longer than I have. He has become unusually fatigued, complains about his stomach, feeling weird, or hurting, dehydrated, confused, and today all of a sudden quit his job, that he has had for 8+ years and loves and just quit on the spot because he said he felt like he couldn’t go on he seemed abnormally, agitated, and confused. which is completely out of character for him in the decade I have known him. Watching this happen has been terrifying. I have tried contacting fire departments and agencies related to housing and air safety. Instead of help, I have been dismissed, redirected, even unprofessionally asked if I currently had a primary healthcare provider and if I knew there was a family medical facility kitty corner to where I live. I was treated condescendingly. I unfortunately expect this kind of behavior from time to time because In the past few years, I attempted to report what I believe to be serious government corruption involving extremely large sums of money. Something that I had spent years investigating, and the more discovered I was already too late because the severity of the situation that I was trying to uncover is something that nobody dares to combat because it is a monster that has grown so protected and powerful that trying to bring that kind of thing down will cost you your life and your sanity. I wasn’t seeking any monetary value. I just didn’t want it to keep happening. I didn’t want things to be that way and it hurts that we are suffering the consequences of these actions that we had no control over but we we have been paying for it and watching it poorly affect us. They make sure that others have a view of you that is far from a good one. So Since then, I have been treated very differently by police, paramedics, and other agencies. I believe I have been effectively blackballed. I am inexperienced with handling situations like this, but I cared enough to try. That decision has had consequences. Instead of being seen as a potential victim of abuse or harm, I feel like I am now viewed as a problem, someone threatening systems or people who have a lot at stake if allegations are taken seriously. I have learned that proper ozone detection equipment is extremely expensive and requires trained operators, Amazon snd Walmart sell detectors, but those kind detectors would not be proper evidence in the court of law , to start an investigation . I don’t know if there really is anyone that would be readily available to assist me. A lot of people I have called have not contacted me back. Without that kind of evidence, it feels impossible to get it initiated Wow, I just scrolled up realizing I’ve said a lot. I always do. It really stems from the heart. I love feeling as much as I do. It has taken a lot of strength to have these things done to you and feeling that have to take it. But no matter what I stand for my truth. Sometimes it feels like that’s all I have. I just hope that’s enough. I am not here to argue tone, wording, or whether this sounds unlikely. I am scared, exhausted, and running out of time. A couple days ago I made a post where I was complaining about my hotel, since they've been running a very powerful ozone generator next to people's bedrooms. After talking with 4 different hotel people, nobody ever bothered to do a 5-minute research on the subject. Obviously they didn't care about it at all, and they kept running the machine undisturbed. I called OHSA (Occupational health and safety authority) for Malta. The lady I spoke to had a vague understanding of the subject, since she asked me what Ozone was. After talking with her supervisor though, they opened a case and gave me a case number. They said they'd send someone to assess the situation. I was hopeful but nobody ever showed up (at least for now). Today I sent a couple emails to the enforcement unit of the MTA (Malta Tourism Authority) after talking with their info line. I also sent the same inquiry to the civil protection. My last attempt was calling the poison center, but they just gave me advice on my medical situation (which is, at the moment, relatively fine beside some sore throat). They tried to talk to the management but they couldn't talk with anyone. My wife is doing well and has no symptoms whatsoever. We did all we could to minimize any exposure, we spend less than 5 seconds in the hallway holding our breath just to get into the room, and we have our windows open 24/7. Since the cleaning staff doesn't seem to be highly affected, I assume the machine is not turned to the highest setting and I am probably more sensitive. This doesn't excuse their reckless behavior, as they've got NO clue and they don't even know what it is they're turning on. I also made sure to sabotage their operation by turning it off every time I see it on. Our vacation has almost come to an end: we have two nights left, one of which (tomorrow) we'll spend on a different room/floor. The hotel has agreed to change our room after many complaints. I am still not happy with the outcome but I'm trying to keep us safe. (And that's why I haven't publicly revealed the name of the place yet, which I'll do as soon as we're out of here) When this trip is over, I'll see if I can somehow bring them to court over this life threatening situation. We just bought a new house built in 1986. I can smell the house on my clothes when I leave it and it drives me crazy. I’ve been asking all my family and friends to describe the smell to me when they visit and “stale” and “grandma/grandpas house” are common descriptors. They say it doesn’t smell bad but I just want it to smell like NOTHING! 😅 or at least fresh! The carpet was replaced and I have deep cleaned all the hard flooring. It has never been occupied by folks older than their early 60s as far as I am aware so “nonenal” doesn’t seem likely. Two of the rooms were occupied by teenage boys and you can smell that clearly. Washing the walls and carpet with enzyme cleaner hasn’t don’t anything in those so we are borrowing an ozone machine for those next week. Considering using it on the whole house. Can’t open windows to air out because it is incredibly hot and extremely humid here. AC units weren’t properly tuned so we have just fixed a humidity issue (55-65% humidity indoors). I imagine that didn’t help the stale smell. Considering air duct cleaning. What worked for you? Please give tips so I can’t stop going crazy and enjoy my new house! Edit 8/24/25: I am leaning away from using the ozone generator inside, at least for anything longer than 15-30 minutes in the smellier rooms. I am trying odoban on the walls right now. Update 8/25/25: Odoban seems to have helped (washed the walls, ceilings, spritzed carpets). I am airing out the whole house now. AquaGuard is coming tomorrow to check for moisture in our slab foundation before we do duct cleaning per the advice of our HVAC tech. HVAC comes next week to do the final fixes that should resolve not removing humidity accurately. Will update. Update 9/15/25: It’s been a few weeks, I’ve ozoned one room and it has helped significantly. The ozone generator we are borrowing is old and low output so it’s taken several runs over many days since we can’t fully vacate. We are going to get the duct cleaning hopefully next week as that seems to be a huge culprit in an otherwise semi-newly renovated space. AquaGuard found no foundation water intrusion so that is ruled out. We are getting a final quote on AC work tomorrow so hopefully that starts soon. Also found and fixed multiple small gas leaks today so that probably didn’t help. Lol. As time goes on the smell is getting better and better but I won’t be satisfied until I can leave the house and smell nothing but fresh on my clothes! when I went to google trying to find any sort of research on what to do if you were exposed to ozone, most articles were about short term exposure.. I'm hoping some of yall might have some advice advice to share with us. I accidentally left a ozone machine on for two days in my 520 square-foot apartment, I meant to use it for two hours while staying at a friends house but when I returned home it was running. A lot of my clothes still smell like it and I had to temporarily discard of my mattress by putting it outside because it was 98% organic latex and it just smelled so weird. I am very worried about my clothes and my mattress. Do I need to get rid of them? Do I need to get rid of everything? Am I going to be okay? I feel like you can't trust anyone these days. I have an old house and got the ducts cleaned for 20+ years of Dog smell. They company ( A reputable HVAC and plumping outfit in my area) Recommended an ozone air cleaner. Now I find out that at small amounts that it doesn't clean anything. So, buddy of mine runs an airbnb. He recently had guests from hell, who smoked cigarettes, weed, and (as best as we can figure) heroin in his house. He tried airing it out for a week, no dice. It was still overpowering. So he went with the nuclear option and ordered an 11,000mg/hr ozone generator on Amazon. I warned him to be very careful with these things. I was almost certain that anything pumping out that much ozone wouldn't be legal to sell to a civilian. Guess I was wrong. He ran it 8 hours, 2 days in a row. The cigarette smell is gone, but now we're left with a much worse problem: The air is literally unsafe to breathe. I was stopping by his house to unplug his ozone generator at night, and just being in there for 15 seconds, while holding my breath, I basically destroyed my lungs. I've been coughing up green shit, it's terrible. It stuck to my clothes, and there was no way to avoid breathing it. Anyway, we've had the windows open for a week, and while it's no longer as toxic as it used to be, you'll still get a headache if you spend longer than 90 seconds in there. These things should not be legal. The manufacturers are all basically psychopaths who lie and say that ozone is either not bad, or actively good. These devices have not been approved by any agency for use in inhabited indoor spaces. Do not buy them. Anyway, my questions are: Is the smell/pollutant lingering in the air still ozone, or is it the products of stuff (plastic, fibers, etc.) that reacted with ozone? I've read that tropospheric ozone has a fairly short half-life, so I'm not sure why it hasn't decomposed yet. Is it just a "long tail" effect because ozone's detection threshold is like 10ppb? Or did it actually oxidize/volatilize the plastic fibers in his mattresses? How the fuck do we get rid of it? I have a biochem degree. I've done organic synthesis. I can dig through the literature. I can google. I have found nothing on removing lingering ozone from a residential space. Just a bunch of sad stories on message boards about people who had to move into hotels. Luckily, nobody has to live here full time, but the property does generate income, and this is costing serious fucking money (in addition to the cost of blasting the heater with the windows open). Our plan going forward is: keep the house as warm as possible (supposedly this decreases the halflife of ozone), and keep moving air through it. I've also read that humidity can affect ozone half life, but I can't find a source saying whether it increases it or decreases it. I once had a meteorology professor who did a demo where he took a UV light, and some citrus peels, he let the UV blast into a terrarium to generate some ozone, and squeezed the citrus peel oil into it. It pretty rapidly resulted in a cloud of photochemical smog. Could we take advantage of this? I'm thinking maybe some sort of cirtrus oil cleaner might react with stray ozone, and then turn into that same sort of smoky particulate looking shit, and then we can suck that up with a bunch of HEPA filters. Maybe even heating a cooking oil up to its smoke point and letting that greasy aersol get ozonated into smog. Does anyone have any reason why this would be inadvisable? (If your argument is based on "indoor air pollution", then it probably doesn't apply. The air quality here is already at maximum shittiness. It literally makes you ill to breathe for any real length of time.) If anyone has proposals, or relevant literature, or anything useful, please get at me here. If you aren't able to offer any help, take this as a warning. You are immeasurably better off just breathing shitty heroin smoke. Jesus fucking Christ. Definitely feel free to keep them coming, so that when someone 5 years from now fucks up like we did, and starts panic-googling, this thread will pop up and they won't feel like the first person in history who ever had this problem. For the sake of any googlers from the future, I'm gonna summarize it all here: The problem: We left the ozone generator on for way too fucking long. 15 minutes to an hour should have been plenty. 2 hours max. The consensus: We are no longer battling unreacted ozone, but the VOCs it left behind after reacting with plastics and other organics. Estimates for ozone half-life vary pretty wildly (from 7 minutes to 20 days). 8 days of aggressive ventilation, and a few days of heating, should have been plenty of time to destroy the raw ozone. Plus, the smell is no longer the overwhelming, single note of ozone. It's a deeper smell of "new car" + pool water. The plan now is: Thorough cleaning of all surfaces, floors/counters/walls/ceilings/ceiling fans (I could use recommendations for cleaning tools to dig into HVAC vents, if anyone has any ideas about that) Mattresses in the sun/fresh air. Leave them for one afternoon, then flip them over and leave them for another after. Maintain fresh airflow. Strategically placed space heaters & central heat to volatilize the VOCs. Cross breeze (one fan at front door to suck in fresh air, one fan at back door to extract dirty air). Fragrance-free Febreze on any porous surfaces. HEPA filters out the wazoo, especially in any areas with stagnant air. (Once the fans are set up and running, I'm just gonna blow some vape smoke to see whether it moves or settles.) After that, we'll seal it back up for a day and then check to see how it smells after it's been sitting for awhile. This one is only necessary because it's an airbnb, and he needs to make sure it won't knock anyone on their ass when they first check in if it's been vacant for awhile. About a month ago I was trying to get rid of some lingering odors since I bought the house furnished with the previous owners' stuff (rugs, furniture, etc.) I used a air purifier/ ozone generator in the master bedroom for about 2 hours and after the ozone cleared I noticed a different smell in the room. There is now a sick, sweet, chemical smell in there that won't go away! I have the windows either open or cracked open all the time but the materials that the ozone reacted with are off gassing so strongly, with no signs of slowing down! I've since learned that too strong of an ozone treatment causes a chemical reaction and oxidation of certain materials (plastics, fiberglass,rubber, vinyl, synthetic materials) that can last a really long time. The sweet smell is from aldehydes and other VOCs that are being released. I'm not sure what my options are because I can't afford to rip everything out and start over. I've read many other accounts of people having the same problem after ozone treatment, people seeking help, but never how the issue was resolves, or how long it took for their rooms to off gas.
