Hot tub leaking water ONLY when circulation pump is running – Could it be a hidden ozone check valve?
Hey everyone, I’m dealing with a super annoying water leak on my hot tub (Perfect Spa, Key West model) and could really use some expert eyes on this. The problem is highly specific and follows a very clear pattern: The Symptom: The tub ONLY loses water when the circulation pump is running (during the filtration cycle). When the pump is active, the water level drops rapidly. When the hot tub is completely idle (everything turned off), the water level stays rock solid and not a single drop is lost. The main equipment compartment (pumps, heater, pack) is bone dry, and there is no visible pooling on the ground inside that area. My Analysis & Findings so far: On this model, only one small jet (the circulation/ozone jet) is active during the filtration cycle. I inspected the plumbing in the equipment bay and found the white venturi injector (Mazzei style). The thick corrugated hose running from it toward the jet is completely dry. However, there is also the thin, yellowish air/ozone tubing connected to the injector. This tubing loops around and disappears forward, deep under the thick spray-foam insulation (the ozone generator itself is buried somewhere behind an adjacent side panel, hidden in the foam). The Crucial Observation: When the circulation pump is running, I can clearly see wet air bubbles rising inside this thin yellowish tube, moving upwards toward the injector. Normally, this tube is supposed to be dry and only carry ozone gas. My Theory / Question for you guys: Is it possible that the external ozone check valve, which is hidden somewhere under the spray foam inside that tubing line, is completely cracked or failed? My logic is: 1 As soon as the pump starts, pressure builds up in the plumbing. Because the check valve under the foam is ruptured, the pump constantly forces water out of the system into the insulation/ground (causing the leak). 2 At the exact same time, the venturi injector creates a strong suction at the top, drawing in air and the standing water directly from that leak point (which explains the wet bubbles rising in my video). 3 Once the pump shuts off, the pressure drops, the suction stops, and the water loss ends instantly. Does this theory sound plausible, or am I missing something mechanically? Has anyone experienced this exact failure mode with a buried ozone line? Thanks in advance for any insights! Here is a short clip showing the bubbles rising submitted by /u/Fragrant-Try6901 to r/hottub [link] [comments]

Garden Grove GKN situation from the perspective of a chemical engineer
Hi, I have around 7 years experience total in the industry and 5 years in a place which had compounds that could have runaway reactions, like what we are seeing at GKN. The facility I worked in had those uncontrolled reactions several times over the decades it ran, but we had ironed out a lot of the issues by the time I got there. Not to say there weren't any close calls, but there was a strong safety culture and adequate safeguards and equipment to prevent further escalation. 5 years does not make me an expert, but I thought deeply about this issue often, reading many historical company reports and scientific literature about this hazard, and implemented safety improvements specific to this issue. Additionally I will rely on an authoritative source for this hazard. Read this instead of my post for a thorough overview, but I will try to make it more digestible. Methacrylate Esters Safe Handling Guideline Below is some information around this type of hazard and common factors that can be involved, however we really need a complete investigation to understand what went wrong. I will say that a single valve failure or one persons oversight should not lead to something like this, the hazards around methyl methacrylate (MMA) have been well known for a long time and multiple layers of protection are needed. What is a thermal runaway reaction? People are concerned that the MMA tank will overheat and explode, or cause some sort of rupture. There's also a belief the tank will eventually solidify and the problem will end. Both of these can happen, and that is because there is strong evidence that the MMA is reacting with itself. Everytime it does that, it release heat, which makes the reaction go faster. Eventually, if it gets hot enough, the reaction can cause the tank contents to start boiling (MMA boils at 212.7 °F, atlhough it's no longer pure MMA so this will vary). This can cause two things: MMA vapors vent out of the tank, and are knocked down by the water spray which results in a relatively safe outcome. This is what current actions by responders could likely lead to. If they weren't spraying it down, it would collect low to the ground, and when (not if) they catch a spark with something they will ignite the entire vapor cloud. The tank is unable to vent these vapors (MMA tank vents have been known to plug in this type of scenario), causing the tank to overpressure and rupture, spilling all the contents which would then also catch fire. Both of these could damage nearby tanks and cause further damage, which is why they preemptively emptied nearby tanks. How do you stop a thermal runaway? If the tank solidifies, that's likely because a lot of the MMA has reacted, forming polymers that are much more viscous or sludgy and eventually freezing. If something is solid, the molecules can't get to each other which means the reaction basically stops. That means a lot less heat is produced, so the cooling water that's applied can finish cooling the tank contents down. This approach essentially means letting the reaction progress while preventing it from overheating/becoming uncontrolled . This is what we are seeing with the cooling water being applied to the external walls of the vessel (shitty method of cooling btw, but that's on GKN, more on that later). “If the temperature rises above 45 °C (113 °F) or the rate of rise is greater than 2 °C (3.6 °F)/hour, and no source of external heat has been identified, it is highly likely that polymerization is occurring and that action is needed. If the temperature is above 55 °C (131 °F) or is rising at a rate greater than 5 °C per hour then an uncontrolled polymerization almost certainly is occurring. “ Last I read the tank was at 90 °F, so we are currently far from the uncontrollable polymerization threshold, but this can accelerate. They reported a 1 °F increase per hour WITH cooling, so you can see why early response and cooling once polymerization has been identified is critical. Polymerization was identified much earlier than this industry guide's 113 °F threshold. This may have been due to: Prior monitoring showing a high rate of temperature increase. An inability to add chemical stabilizers/inhibitors that are normally required. Accidental addition of a contaminant. Alternatively, with MMA as with other monomers, reactions can also be stopped by adding an inhibitor. However, if the reaction is occurring due to contamination, or if it’s too far along, an inhibitor may not help. “While PTZ [inhibitor] often is the most effective option, it will not be effective in short stopping in every situation. If the addition is performed too late into an uncontrolled polymerization process, or if the polymerization is a result of significant over-addition of an initiator, then short stopping is unlikely to be effective” Also realize that there's no guarantee of proper mixing of the inhibitor, so even with adding the right amount you could have pockets that wont see any of it and will continue reacting at a fast rate. The same goes for the thermal profile in general, although thermal differences will naturally cause the fluid to mix, this is not ideal, you preferably want a mechanical mixer of sorts. What caused this and who's to blame? I don't know, an investigation is needed. The U.S has the Chemical Safety Board which sends out investigators to sites like these, and can uncover root cause that go beyond just equipment failure. As far as emergency response goes, if thermal runaway is known hazard, effective means of emergency cooling should be present. It appears that GKN had a sprinkler system on top of the tank, and additional firefighting water accomplishes this cooling to a degree, but is not very effective relative to dedicated cooling equipment. Other methods of cooling include external heat exchangers, but this requires pump recirculation, which is less reliable especially when we know solids and pluggage can form, blocking the pump (as occurred in this instance). Tanks of that size can come with cooling jackets and agitation methods which aid in cooling. Jacket cooling would be more reliable than an external heat exchanger since they don’t rely on a pump and can’t get plugged by MMA byproducts. As far as causes go, in general these polymerization reactions occur due to the presence of free radicals. These are generated with heat, UV light, or contaminants such is metal ions, peroxides, acids, etc.. Once MMA starts reacting in this way, it generates more free radicals as well. MMA storage often does have heating/cooling equipment present since it can freeze or heat up due to environmental conditions. There should be multiple redundant temperature instruments to ensure this is working properly. Running at elevated temperatures can cause polymerization to increase in rate. If this occurred due to lack of inhibitor/stabilizer, there should be multiple tests multiple times a day that measure this concentration and effectiveness, as well as a robust system of addition of inhibitor. If contamination occurred leading to polymerization, this can be avoided by performing testing on incoming raw materials. If the contamination was generated inside the process (corrosion can cause this), this is a failure due to not using compatible equipment material (e.g. carbon steel instead of stainless steel). These safeguard methods were all implemented in the place I worked, so it is a reasonable expectation for responsible manufacturing of dangerous chemicals. Environmental risks and toxicity The World Health Organization has this to say about MMA: “The persistence of methyl methacrylate in the atmosphere is short, and the chemical is not considered to contribute directly to depletion of the ozone layer. Methyl methacrylate is not expected to bioconcentrate in the environment, and inhalation from air is likely the primary route of human exposure.” WHO (CICAD 4: 1998) Inhalation of these vapors will cause acute health effects, which is why evacuation is important. But hopefully any releases or spills will not persist in the environment. I don’t have much expertise in this area. _______________________ I’m hoping everyone can stay safe, that we can implement teachings from this to make other processes more safe, and that we can hold those responsible accountable. submitted by /u/olondono to r/orangecounty [link] [comments]

Ozone Generator - What do I need to know before use?
Hi everyone, i apologize in advance if this is the wrong sub to ask this in, please direct me where to go if so! The carpet in my house stinks (first like cat urine, now it just smells like dirty old carpet)… i’ve shampooed it multiple times & allowed it to dry thoroughly every time, i’ve used 2 different enzyme cleaners and i’ve been sure to do a few water-only rinses between products to avoid any reactions between the cleaners, im completely out of ideas on what else i can do. at this point im planning to just replace the carpet when i can afford it, but that wont be for awhile. i’m planning to use an ozone generator to help with the smell until im able to fit new carpet into the budget, and am hoping someone can help me make sure i’ve got everything out of the area that needs to be in order to run this machine safely. i know my pets and myself have to vacate the area, and that i need to ventilate the area for several hours after the machine turns off. i’ve also read that any valuable artwork should be removed. do i need to move my rocks/crystals out of the room as well? electronics? i’m planning to use it in one room (around 12’ x11.5’) and running the machine for an hour. is that a sufficient amount of time? submitted by /u/httpjaeger to r/hvacadvice [link] [comments]

Why I ditched my pump for a salt water generator
I had a somewhat expensive pump set up for nearly a year now, and I've rarely used it. I was mostly back to cold showers because I found it so janky, cumbersome, and harsh on my skin. I thought about better ways I could do a cold plunge better, and I came up with this: a simple salt water generator with bags of ice as desired. It might sound like a downgrade at first but let me tell you why I like it so much better. No more stinging my skin using bromine tablets or similar chemicals. The salt water just feels like, well, water. It wouldn't sting even on an open wound. I don't have to manage the ozone and the temperature cooling throughout the day. I just leave the generator in there all the time and it takes care of itself, making chlorine and keeping water moving. It's totally silent, compared to the pump, which roars whenever it's on. The pump is complicated and prone to breaking; the generator is simple and seems lasting. Also, if you try this before the pump: The price is lower (my generator was $180). You don't have to worry about plumbing, you just drop it in. Now, I just started using this setup so maybe I'm in a honeymoon period. If there are any of you who have looked into, or have used a similar setup, and have critiques, I'm all ears. But let me show you how you can replicate my setup if you want to. Materials: A tub (the beauty being it could be literally any tub). Salt water generator. Salt. Salinity and ph tester. Chlorine, alkalinity, ph test strips. And I had to use ph down. Fill the tub. Check the ph and use teaspoons of ph down as needed to get to between 7.2 and 7.8 ph. Add the salt, my generator instructions say to be within 2000-2500ppm but online it usually says 3000-3500. I went with 2500, which took 0.95 kg for my 75-gallon tub. Then plug the generator in and throw it in the tub. Add ice as you like. Enjoy! submitted by /u/Old-Alarm-1428 to r/coldplunge [link] [comments]

How UV, Ozone and Automatic Chlorine Dosing Improve Swimming Pool Water Quality
In recent years, the swimming pool industry has been moving toward multi-stage water treatment systems instead of relying only on chlorine. While chlorine is an effective disinfectant, it reacts with organic contaminants such as sweat, body oils, and cosmetics to produce chloramines, which are responsible for: • strong chlorine odor • eye irritation • skin irritation • reduced air quality in indoor pools To address this issue, many modern pools now use a combination of: UV Sterilization Ozone Oxidation Automatic Chlorine Dosing This approach is often described as part of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) in water treatment. UV Disinfection UV systems use UV-C germicidal light (around 254 nm wavelength) to inactivate microorganisms. When pool water passes through the UV reactor: • the radiation damages microbial DNA • microorganisms lose their ability to reproduce • pathogens become inactive UV systems are highly effective against: • bacteria • viruses • protozoa such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia For this reason, UV technology is also widely used in drinking water treatment plants and hospitals. However, UV does not leave a residual disinfectant in the water, which is why it is used as a secondary disinfection system rather than a complete replacement for chlorine. Ozone Oxidation Ozone (O₃) is one of the most powerful oxidizing agents used in water treatment. It is produced on site by an ozone generator and injected into the filtration system. Ozone performs several functions: • oxidizes organic contaminants • breaks down oils and cosmetics • eliminates odors • improves water clarity Ozone is extremely effective at destroying bacteria and viruses, often much faster than traditional chlorine systems. However, ozone decomposes quickly in water, so it is typically used in the filtration loop rather than inside the pool basin. Why Combine UV and Ozone? Modern pool systems combine UV and ozone because they complement each other. UV focuses on microbial inactivation, while ozone focuses on oxidation of contaminants. Together they help: • reduce chloramine formation • improve water clarity • reduce chemical usage • improve overall water quality Several research studies in water treatment have shown that combining UV and ozone can significantly reduce harmful chlorine by-products in swimming pools. Automatic Chlorine Dosing Even with UV and ozone, most public health standards still require a small residual chlorine level in the pool. This is because chlorine provides continuous disinfection directly in the pool water. Modern pools therefore use automatic chlorine dosing systems which: • monitor ORP and pH • automatically inject chlorine • maintain stable sanitizer levels Final Thoughts The most advanced swimming pool sanitation systems today rely on a three-layer approach: UV sterilization Ozone oxidation Automatic chlorine dosing This provides: • cleaner water • reduced chemical usage • improved swimmer comfort • better overall water quality https://preview.redd.it/rdcdktptt7pg1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4645ad84f068817dd4330eff1206824199fccc1 https://preview.redd.it/1b04fuptt7pg1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5389f55df36d490cabe7b21bc80f60920cab68eb https://preview.redd.it/8drjgyptt7pg1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8703e11b033c9a25bd716a6b69d9d1a5c958daf4 https://preview.redd.it/f7betzptt7pg1.jpg?width=829&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c13b050a9bc25b9e9c929204614017cbefd16b78 https://preview.redd.it/8u4ec2qtt7pg1.jpg?width=910&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71037463e2860e43437585cb0ea1b3cf0a917f1a submitted by /u/Outrageous_Fun_8252 to r/cruzapools [link] [comments]

Self service carwash/ pros cons of using ozone water
Hi everyone, I’m planning a self-service car wash (7 bays, 24/7) in Central Europe (cold winters, road salt) and I’m currently deciding whether to include ozonated cold water as part of the wash programs. I’d really appreciate feedback from owners who actually run ozone systems: Is ozonated cold water effective enough as a main wash, especially in winter? Do customers accept it, or do they still expect heated water? Have you noticed fewer chemicals, lower operating costs, or any maintenance issues with ozone generators? If you use both: how do you position ozone vs heated water in your pricing/program structure? I’m not looking for marketing claims, just real-world experience and lessons learned. Ozone generator destroyed?
Water drip-leaked from the air intake on my ozone generator. The water level got higher than the loop and water made its way through the air tube and past the check valve, and through the ozone generator. I was able to get the water out of the tube and mount the loop higher within the bay so it seems fine for now. I plan to change the check valve but I'm concerned that the ozone generator is destroyed from the water. However, it never tripped the breaker and the green light still turns on so maybe it's fine. It's a CMP Del Ozone Spa A03. The whole tub is an Aquaterra Huntley and is only three months old. Should I change the whole ozone generator? Or just the check valve? Should I complain to the manufacturer and maybe they will provide a new ozone generator? submitted by /u/illgamma to r/hottub [link] [comments]

Salt water generator for cold plunge?
Curious if anyone has tried using a salt water generator as a way of sanitizing a cold plunge. For example the small volume unit made by intex (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Intex-120V-Krystal-Clear-Saltwater-System-CG-26667/867389334). Is there any reason this can't or shouldn't be used on cold plunge? It seems less complicated than the whole venturi/ozone setup and more effective than a UV system. submitted by /u/DaZedMan to r/coldplunge [link] [comments]

Ozone generator
Just bought the pod company chiller and long cold plunge. Wondering about water filtration and don’t know much. Thinking of buying an ozone generator for the water but can anyone help educate me on this? Benefits? Risks? What to look for when buying one? And do I need it or can I just put a little chlorine in the tub (or will the chlorine damage it)? Descaling main water tank and ozone generator
Hi, did anybody try to descale the clean water tank with e.g. citric acid? Will the ozone generator survive it? My ozone generator has something on it that looks like a thick limescale. The ozone is still being generated, but it seems to be less than when it was new. Also the dirty water tank never smelled the first few weeks, but now it smells when I am emptying it after 3 days. Does this mean that not enough ozone is being generated? submitted by /u/qqmato11 to r/eufyS1Pro [link] [comments]

People say house smells stale, like a grandparents house
We just bought a new house built in 1986. I can smell the house on my clothes when I leave it and it drives me crazy. I’ve been asking all my family and friends to describe the smell to me when they visit and “stale” and “grandma/grandpas house” are common descriptors. They say it doesn’t smell bad but I just want it to smell like NOTHING! 😅 or at least fresh! The carpet was replaced and I have deep cleaned all the hard flooring. It has never been occupied by folks older than their early 60s as far as I am aware so “nonenal” doesn’t seem likely. Two of the rooms were occupied by teenage boys and you can smell that clearly. Washing the walls and carpet with enzyme cleaner hasn’t don’t anything in those so we are borrowing an ozone machine for those next week. Considering using it on the whole house. Can’t open windows to air out because it is incredibly hot and extremely humid here. AC units weren’t properly tuned so we have just fixed a humidity issue (55-65% humidity indoors). I imagine that didn’t help the stale smell. Considering air duct cleaning. What worked for you? Please give tips so I can’t stop going crazy and enjoy my new house! Edit 8/24/25: I am leaning away from using the ozone generator inside, at least for anything longer than 15-30 minutes in the smellier rooms. I am trying odoban on the walls right now. Update 8/25/25: Odoban seems to have helped (washed the walls, ceilings, spritzed carpets). I am airing out the whole house now. AquaGuard is coming tomorrow to check for moisture in our slab foundation before we do duct cleaning per the advice of our HVAC tech. HVAC comes next week to do the final fixes that should resolve not removing humidity accurately. Will update. Update 9/15/25: It’s been a few weeks, I’ve ozoned one room and it has helped significantly. The ozone generator we are borrowing is old and low output so it’s taken several runs over many days since we can’t fully vacate. We are going to get the duct cleaning hopefully next week as that seems to be a huge culprit in an otherwise semi-newly renovated space. AquaGuard found no foundation water intrusion so that is ruled out. We are getting a final quote on AC work tomorrow so hopefully that starts soon. Also found and fixed multiple small gas leaks today so that probably didn’t help. Lol. As time goes on the smell is getting better and better but I won’t be satisfied until I can leave the house and smell nothing but fresh on my clothes! I’ve pinpointed it as a stale dog smell. submitted by /u/ashlynnegrace to r/CleaningTips [link] [comments]

Fiberglass Saltwater pool + ozone generator Leslie's pool water results
I've had the pool for 4 years and outside of the first year have only added salt when needed after big rains. Dual ozone generator upgrade, worth doing?
I am looking at getting a cal spa Escape-867BX. It is the only brand that has a cool down seat with a reasonable number of jets, which is something I have always wanted. (I get overheated if I don't let my upper body cool down often) It comes with a single ozone generator. But they have an upgrade to twin ozone generators for $300. It seems pretty odd to me. There is bound to be an ideal amount of ozone to insert into the water stream, and I would assume a single ozone generator can do that. So would a second one reduce my chemical usage much? The wife likes the idea of fewer chemicals. Also, if anyone has this spa, what is the lowest temp you can set it to? submitted by /u/modern_medicine_isnt to r/hottub [link] [comments]

Reduced ozone generator effectiveness
I noticed after 6-8 months of use, my dirty water tank gradually began to smell. Now it smells like straight up sewage. I previously made a post raving about the ozone function. It was so strong my dirty water tank smelled like a chlorinated pool. Do we know why an ozone generator like this would stop working? There are still bubbles being produced. It just doesn't seem to smell very strongly like ozone. Stop saying that nuclear is bad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7EAfUeSBSQ https://youtu.be/Jzfpyo-q-RM https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=edBJ1LkvdQQ STOP THE FEARMONGERING. Chernobyl was built by the Soviets. It had a ton of flaws, from mixing fuel rods with control rods, to not having any security measures in place. The government's reaction was slow and concentrated on the image rather than damage control. Fukushima was managed by TEPCO who ignored warnings about the risk of flooding emergency generators in the basement. Per Terawatt hour, coal causes 24 deaths, oil 16, and natural gas 4. Wind causes 0.06 deaths, water causes 0.04. Nuclear power causes 0.04 deaths, including Chernobyl AND Fukushima. The sun causes 0.02 deaths. Radioactive waste is a pain in the ass to remove, but not impossible. They are being watched over, while products of fossil fuel combustion such as carbon monoxide, heavy metals like mercury, ozone and sulfur and nitrogen compounds are being released into the air we breathe, and on top of that, some of them are fueling a global climate crisis destroying crops, burning forests and homes, flooding cities and coastlines, causing heatwaves and hurricanes, displacing people and destabilizing human societies. Germany has shut down its nuclear power plants and now has to rely on gas, coal and lignite, the worst source of energy, turning entire areas into wastelands. The shutdown was proposed by the Greens in the late 90s and early 2000s in exchange for support for the elected party, and was planned for the 2020s. Then came Fukushima and Merkel accelerated it. the shutdown was moved to 2022, the year Russia invaded Ukraine. So Germany ended up funding the genocidal conquest of Ukraine. On top of that, that year there was a record heatwave which caused additional stress on the grid as people turn on ACs, TVs etc. and rivers dry up. Germany ended up buying French nuclear electricity actually. The worst energy source is coal, especially lignite. Lignite mining turns entire swaths of land into lunar wastelands and hard coal mining causes disease and accidents that kill miners. Coal burning has coated our cities, homes and lungs with soot, as well as carbon monoxide, ozone, heavy metals like mercury and sulfur and nitrogen dioxides. It has left behind mountains of toxic ash that is piled into mountains exposed to the wind polluting the air and poured into reservoirs that pollute water. Living within 1.6 kilometers of an ash mountain increases the risk of cancer by 160%, which means that every 10 meters of living closer to a mountain of ash, equals 1% more cancer risk. And, of course, it leaves massive CO2 emissions that fuel a global climate crisis destroying crops, burning forests and homes, flooding cities and coastlines, causing heat waves, hurricanes, displacing people and destabilizing human societies. Outdoor air pollution kills 8 million people per year, and nuclear could help save those lives, on top of a habitable planet with decent living standards. If we want to decarbonize energy, we need nuclear power as a backbone in case the sun, wind and water don't produce enough energy and to avoid the bottleneck effect. I guess some of this fear comes from The Simpsons and the fact that the main character, Homer Simpson is a safety inspector at a nuclear power plant and the plant is run by a heartless billionaire, Mr. Burns. Yes, people really think there is green smoke coming out of the cooling towers. In general, pop culture from that period has an anti-nuclear vibe, e.g. Radioactive waste in old animated series has a bright green glow as if it is radiating something dangerous and looks like it is funded by Big Oil and Big Gas. submitted by /u/BaseballSeveral1107 to r/GenZ [link] [comments]

Holy SHIT. Why are ozone generators legal to buy on Amazon, and how the absolute fuck do I get rid of the smell?
So, buddy of mine runs an airbnb. He recently had guests from hell, who smoked cigarettes, weed, and (as best as we can figure) heroin in his house. He tried airing it out for a week, no dice. It was still overpowering. So he went with the nuclear option and ordered an 11,000mg/hr ozone generator on Amazon. I warned him to be very careful with these things. I was almost certain that anything pumping out that much ozone wouldn't be legal to sell to a civilian. Guess I was wrong. He ran it 8 hours, 2 days in a row. The cigarette smell is gone, but now we're left with a much worse problem: The air is literally unsafe to breathe. I was stopping by his house to unplug his ozone generator at night, and just being in there for 15 seconds, while holding my breath, I basically destroyed my lungs. I've been coughing up green shit, it's terrible. It stuck to my clothes, and there was no way to avoid breathing it. Anyway, we've had the windows open for a week, and while it's no longer as toxic as it used to be, you'll still get a headache if you spend longer than 90 seconds in there. These things should not be legal. The manufacturers are all basically psychopaths who lie and say that ozone is either not bad, or actively good. These devices have not been approved by any agency for use in inhabited indoor spaces. Do not buy them. Anyway, my questions are: Is the smell/pollutant lingering in the air still ozone, or is it the products of stuff (plastic, fibers, etc.) that reacted with ozone? I've read that tropospheric ozone has a fairly short half-life, so I'm not sure why it hasn't decomposed yet. Is it just a "long tail" effect because ozone's detection threshold is like 10ppb? Or did it actually oxidize/volatilize the plastic fibers in his mattresses? How the fuck do we get rid of it? I have a biochem degree. I've done organic synthesis. I can dig through the literature. I can google. I have found nothing on removing lingering ozone from a residential space. Just a bunch of sad stories on message boards about people who had to move into hotels. Luckily, nobody has to live here full time, but the property does generate income, and this is costing serious fucking money (in addition to the cost of blasting the heater with the windows open). Our plan going forward is: keep the house as warm as possible (supposedly this decreases the halflife of ozone), and keep moving air through it. I've also read that humidity can affect ozone half life, but I can't find a source saying whether it increases it or decreases it. I once had a meteorology professor who did a demo where he took a UV light, and some citrus peels, he let the UV blast into a terrarium to generate some ozone, and squeezed the citrus peel oil into it. It pretty rapidly resulted in a cloud of photochemical smog. Could we take advantage of this? I'm thinking maybe some sort of cirtrus oil cleaner might react with stray ozone, and then turn into that same sort of smoky particulate looking shit, and then we can suck that up with a bunch of HEPA filters. Maybe even heating a cooking oil up to its smoke point and letting that greasy aersol get ozonated into smog. Does anyone have any reason why this would be inadvisable? (If your argument is based on "indoor air pollution", then it probably doesn't apply. The air quality here is already at maximum shittiness. It literally makes you ill to breathe for any real length of time.) If anyone has proposals, or relevant literature, or anything useful, please get at me here. If you aren't able to offer any help, take this as a warning. You are immeasurably better off just breathing shitty heroin smoke. Jesus fucking Christ. EDIT: Thank you guys so much for all of the help, explanations, and ideas. Definitely feel free to keep them coming, so that when someone 5 years from now fucks up like we did, and starts panic-googling, this thread will pop up and they won't feel like the first person in history who ever had this problem. For the sake of any googlers from the future, I'm gonna summarize it all here: The problem: We left the ozone generator on for way too fucking long. 15 minutes to an hour should have been plenty. 2 hours max. The consensus: We are no longer battling unreacted ozone, but the VOCs it left behind after reacting with plastics and other organics. Estimates for ozone half-life vary pretty wildly (from 7 minutes to 20 days). 8 days of aggressive ventilation, and a few days of heating, should have been plenty of time to destroy the raw ozone. Plus, the smell is no longer the overwhelming, single note of ozone. It's a deeper smell of "new car" + pool water. The plan now is: Thorough cleaning of all surfaces, floors/counters/walls/ceilings/ceiling fans (I could use recommendations for cleaning tools to dig into HVAC vents, if anyone has any ideas about that) Mattresses in the sun/fresh air. Leave them for one afternoon, then flip them over and leave them for another after. Maintain fresh airflow. Strategically placed space heaters & central heat to volatilize the VOCs. Cross breeze (one fan at front door to suck in fresh air, one fan at back door to extract dirty air). Fragrance-free Febreze on any porous surfaces. HEPA filters out the wazoo, especially in any areas with stagnant air. (Once the fans are set up and running, I'm just gonna blow some vape smoke to see whether it moves or settles.) After that, we'll seal it back up for a day and then check to see how it smells after it's been sitting for awhile. This one is only necessary because it's an airbnb, and he needs to make sure it won't knock anyone on their ass when they first check in if it's been vacant for awhile. If it's still awful, we'll go from there, but I have high hopes. Thanks again! submitted by /u/JeromesDream to r/chemistry [link] [comments]

The Chernobyl disaster was a coverup of something terrifying [Part 3]
Part 1 Part 2 “Oh no, no, NO!” I said anxiously. I immediately realized that the odor was very similar to what we noticed when we entered the bunker for the first time. Only much, much stronger. My Geiger counter started clicking too. “What’s going on? Asked Alex. “That guy, Moroz, he told me about this. He told me to run.” I said. Just as he finished, the door shook in an enormous slam, sending dust flying in the air and slightly bending ouwards. There was nowhere to run. We had a heavy steel door on one side, and god-knows what on the other. I had no idea how we could survive. Luckily, Alex had. “Do you still have the rope?” he asked. Without hesitation, we tied it around one of the pumps. It wasn’t easy at first, working with the rope with my hands shaking violently. But then another loud slam echoed through the room. One of the bolts that held the door was launched across the room. I felt a wave of cold run down my spine, and suddenly, I had just this one purpose. To tie the knot. Everything else just shut down in my head. I was done and we dropped it down the broken vent that Alex got dragged into before. We stepped inside and started sliding down the rope. I then heard another slam and then what I think was the door, hitting the ground. It was through. I slid faster, but the rope was starting to burn my hand. I lost the grip and fell down a few meters, landing on top of another vent. It broke, and I fell through inside another corridor. Alex then landed on top of me. It took us a few moments to get back to our feet. I looked around and saw an orange door titled “Decontamination”. We were on level 3. There was no handle, only a button on the wall next to it. I pressed it and the door opened after a few seconds. We entered a small room with a control panel. Using it, I closed the door behind us. Several jets then blasted us with air, a green light popped up and then, another door in front of us opened, inviting us deeper into the facility. I noticed that the control panel was stained with a smudge of fresh blood. Was Moroz still alive and went through here? We couldn’t go back. Our only option was to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. It was supposed to be a cleanroom but the place was wrecked even more than the upper levels. After some walking and searching, we found a room that looked like a makeshift infirmary. A few dozens of beds separated with plastic curtains, some medical equipment. Some beds still had information clipboards attached. Patient 2 QUARANTINE Survey team C Patient in coma Observation only Do not interfere Deceased, 07:28 - unknown Patient 6 QUARANTINE Survey team C Patient in coma Observation only Do not interfere Deceased, 07:52 – unknown Patient 19 QUARANTINE On-site operative assistant, first contact with Survey team C Massive blunt force trauma – chest (suspected internal damage)Cranial concussionSuspected damage to cervical spineDislocated L shoulderFracture – L humerusMultiple lacerations – chest Deceased, 04:04 – internal hemorrhage Patient 7 QUARANTINE Survey team C Patient is psychotic and unresponsive Mild to moderate frostbite Observation only Do not interfere TERMINATION ORDER Signed: A. Moroz There were some body bags on the other side of the room. Empty. We searched the area and eventually ended up in the lower levels of the facility. There was this rotten smell all around. We entered a room, and, well… there was this substance everywhere. On the walls, floor, ceiling, everywhere. It was like flesh, with tendrils or veins running across it, like from a Dead Space game. Then we found bodies attached to it. Dozens. Shriveled up like dead insects in a spider web. “I think we should go back.” Alex said, anxiously. We turned around and went back but then I heard some debris shift in the distance in the corridor we came from. Soon enough, one of these things crawled into the light emitted by my flashlight. It stood there for a while, staring at us with its blank eyes. And then it leaped forward. Then it fell to the ground, dead, and an empty shotgun shell did too soon after. I heard more of them making their way towards us in the distance, so we ran deeper into the facility. I shot a few more on the way, but then ran out of ammo. We eventually found a long, dark tunnel flooded with water. The things were almost on us. I could see them crawl along the walls behinds us. We entered the tunnel. The water slowed us down considerably, and I awaited the worst, but then I noticed that we weren’t followed. They wouldn’t go inside the tunnel. We walked for I don’t know, an hour? Two? The water was ice cold, luckily it was only about knee-deep so it wasn’t too terrible. I already said that Alex didn’t look well since I found him, but as we walked through, he seemed to be getting worse. He complained that his head hurt and he felt dizzy. His skin got pale and he looked very weak. After some time, I had to support him and later, he completely collapsed and fell unconscious. We couldn’t go back, so my only option was to find a way to drag him through the water. It went like this for some time but then I heard something far away in the direction we came from. A splash. I turned and shined my light into the black tunnel. Nothing. I went to continue walking, but then I heard it again. “Hello?” I called, hoping to hear an answer. Maybe Moroz was here? Or did the creatures follow us after all? Nothing. I quickened my pace, but it wasn’t easy dragging another person and moving through knee-deep water. The sounds continued. They weren’t getting closer or farther, they were just there. Then I reached the end. The tunnel was closed off with another massive steel door and no visible way to open it. It was a dead end. I stopped moving and listened. Those sounds, it wasn’t just a splash. It was more like … as if someone or something was wading through the water. I panicked and started banging on the door, calling for help. I had nowhere to go. The sounds were now getting closer. I saw waves in the water. It was now very close. I slowly turned again, and looked into the tunnel. I saw nothing and heard nothing. Just silence and darkness. And then the familiar scent hit my nose. Ozone. Then I heard metal shift behind me, and the door opened. “Dimitri?” A familiar voice called. Moroz. “What – who is…? Oh no, you brought it here!” He pulled me and Alex through the door and then shut it again as fast as he could. “That’s your friend? How…? What happened to him?” He asked as he looked at still-unconscious Alex. “I don’t know. Are you okay?” I asked back. He had a large gash across his face and his right eye. “Well no thanks to you.” He responded. He noticed the makeshift bandage on Alex’s arm and unwrapped it. What he had on his arm wasn’t just a regular wound. It was a bite mark. “That.” Moroz said and pointed at it. “Stand back.” He stood up and drawn his pistol. “NO, wait! At least tell me what’s going on!” “He’s going to be dead in a few minutes. This will make it easier. For him too, but mostly for us.” “What? Please! Is there really nothing else we can do?” I pleaded. He looked at me, looked at Alex and then stood there, thinking for a moment. I was immediately relieved when he holstered his gun again. “Okay. This might help him.” He said, and dug up a case with a syringe from his backpack. It looked used recently and was only about half full with a clear liquid. He injected Alex with the rest of it. “It won’t matter anyway.” He said. “What do you mean?” “Follow me. Take him too if you want, I’m not carrying him.” “I guess you’ve probably already figured out that this all had something to do with the disaster 30 years ago.” He explained as we moved through the facility. “The first machine we used for the teleportation experiments, it wasn’t powerful or reliable enough. We figured out that this whole thing wasn’t as simple as it seemed. We weren’t just teleporting one thing to a different place, we were transferring them between multiple parallel realities. But it was limited, we could only ‘exchange’ two objects with equal mass between two identical places in 2 different realities. So, they built a new machine here, and used a nuclear reactor to power it, hoping that we could possible move anything to any place between 2 given realities. “ “We started exploring whole new universes, saw worlds where the Germans won World War 2, worlds where we all destroyed each other, even worlds where life never evolved on Earth. But then, someone had this idea. If there are these parallel universes, what is between them? There was only one way to know. And that’s when it went wrong, as I said. We should have been happy with what we had. But we always want more, right?" “We tried to access this ‘conduit reality’ as they called it. But when they activated the machine, it stayed open. Something happened, and a ‘portal’ was created, independent from our machine. It was sustaining itself.” “So, we sent a survey team in there. They came back after a few minutes, reporting all sorts of strange things. About how a strange feeling filled that place, how space and time themselves felt odd, even how some of them claimed to have seen themselves at different places at once. They wouldn’t go back, even if threatened with all sorts of penalties.” “We sent a second survey team later. This one didn’t come back at all. So we send a third team to find them. They came back, but something wasn’t right with them when they returned. Their minds were like … erased.” I pictured the blank stares of the creatures we fought on the way. “Shortly after they returned, a massive burst of energy flowed out from the portal straight up, into the reactor. But that wasn’t all.” “And you know all this because you took a sick day, right? I asked. “I was at a different place in the facility when it happened. I’ll never forget when they came to me, saying, that something came through, into our world. “What was it?” I asked. “I don’t know. Nobody knows. It wasn’t unlike anything we’ve ever seen. And it killed almost everyone here. Not just killed, it did stuff to people. You’ve seen.” “We’re here.” We entered a control room, filled with computers and various controls and displays. Moroz closed another blast door and sealed us inside the control. “We need to close the portal. We have tried it before, but these things wouldn’t let us.” “So where are they now?” “As soon as I heard that you went inside the facility and came back, I knew something was off. This place used to be full of them. At least one is still here – the smell of ozone. But a few years ago, anyone who went in wouldn’t get alive past Level -1. But we’ve got this far, and I don’t know why. That’s what scares me. Something isn’t right.” “I know that I am asking for a lot, but we need to go inside the portal and use this.” He emptied his backpack and took out a crude-looking contraption with all sorts of wires, coils and other bits hanging from it. “We need to place one end in the other reality and then return with the second end into ours. If it works, it might cause the portal to collapse.” “And how do you know that the same thing that happened to the third team won’t happen to us too?” I asked. “That’s the thing, I don’t. But I’ll tell you this – you know how they built that concrete shield over the ‘reactor’? They weren’t trying to seal the reactor. They were trying to seal this place, to prevent whatever came into our world from getting out. And a few years ago, the thing we feared most happened – the shield started cracking. They were trying to get out. So, they built a new containment building recently, as you know. But for how long will this go on? Sooner or later, something will fail and they will get out. This might be our only chance to end this for good.” How the hell did I get into this? I thought. I was just a random guy at the wrong place in the wrong time, but Moroz was talking as if the fate of our world depended on me. But maybe he was right. Whatever set of coincidences has brought us here– brought me here, maybe me and Moroz were the only people who could do what needed to be done. “Alright, let’s do it.” I said. We put on a pair of what looked like modified space suits, left everything other than the device in the control room and entered the machine. We were in a dome-shaped chamber full with complicated machinery. In the center, there was a sphere of white light. Above it, a black, hollow shaft going straight up with cracks and debris around the opening. We tethered ourselves to a steel rail and Moroz walked forward, into the sphere and vanished. After some hesitation, I did the same. I found myself in a place that I can’t describe. There was no up or down, and I could ‘walk’ in any direction. It looked empty, yet I could see countless infinitely large shapes with billions of tiny shiny dots on the surface. “Here.” A voice called. I looked for Moroz but I couldn’t find him. “Where are you?” I called. “Come,” he said and grabbed me by the arm, seemingly out of nowhere. I noticed hundreds or thousands of other white spheres in the distance around us. “Are those…?” “Yes. Portals from other parallel realities.” “Are we going to close them all?” “No, just ours. The others are not our problem. They will have to find their own way to handle it.” We walked towards one distinct shape, as with everything here I struggle to describe it. It was like a fractal, the same shape repeating over and over and over again. “I think this is it.” Moroz said, and started doing something with the device. It beeped several times and then started making a high-pitched hum. “Oh no, no, this isn’t good,” he continued. “What’s going on?” “Listen, I need you to take the other end and return. Once you’re back, pull this switch and keep this button pressed until it activates. I have to stay here.” I picked up my end of the machine and watched as a wire started unreeling between the two. “What about the key to the door out?” I asked. “There is no key.” “WHAT? But you said… that wasn’t the plan! “This was always the plan. I couldn’t risk…” he didn’t finish. I saw something in the corner of my eye. Movement. “Shit! Don’t look at it! Go NOW! RUN!” Moroz said. And I listened. I ran back, followed the line back into our portal, with my eyes almost closed. I went through, placed the device on the ground, flipped the switch and the device started producing a similar high-pitched noise. I pushed the button. For a second or two, nothing happened, and then, suddenly the device (or the portal?) let out an ear-piercing whine, an intense flash and a wave of heat. And then, it was gone. Severed wires and tether line laid there on the ground, where the portal used to be. In the meantime, Alex woke up. He looked much better, and I told him what happened while he was out. We didn’t know what to do now. We thought about going back, and trying to cut the chain on the door outside again, but after what happened last time, we doubted that it could work. We probably wouldn’t even get there alive at all. But then, Alex had this idea: “What if we can use the machine to teleport out of here?” It took us several hours to figure out how the controls worked. It was heavily damaged and the reactor was obviously out of question but the generators above supplied enough power for a simple ‘translocation’ as they described it. All we needed to do, is input a target vector. And then, the familiar clicking and smell of ozone came. A powerful slam shook the whole room and left a large dent in the steel door that connected the control room with the rest of the facility. “Fuck, not again!” I yelled. “I think I got it! They have some vectors written down here. We just need to add some height and we’ll get above ground,” Alex explained. “Make it fast!” I said as the door shook in another slam. He did something and the controls lit up with alarms sounding. We ran to the core chamber and closed it behind us, just as we heard the control room door give way. We stood in the center and waited. Sparks and smoke filled the room as the machine did its thing. Please work. I heard another slam and the door to the chamber broke off the wall and fell to the ground. I looked over and then, the time froze. I didn’t feel fear, I felt at peace. I felt as if I was just a step away from understanding everything. I wanted to stay here, forever. A flash suddenly blinded me, and then I bumped mu head into something. I opened my eyes and breathed in fresh air. We were laying upside down in a crater-like hole in the ground in a forest. We were out. We found our car after a few minutes. We saw several military helicopters fly in the opposite direction as we driven home. Alex checked in a hospital with a made-up story of an animal attack. He was okay in the end. We didn’t talk about it again. It was over and I though that our world was safe from whatever stayed at the other side of the portal. But when I finally returned home that day, I noticed that something wasn’t right. The old cherry tree that we used to play at when we were kinds – it wasn’t there. There was an apple tree instead. “…We’ve managed to transport an apple today. However, I couldn’t help but notice that the pattern of red and green skin on top was slightly different…” “…we were transferring them between multiple parallel realities…” “…Portals from other parallel realities. Are we going to close them all? No, just ours. The others are not our problem. They will have to find their own way to handle it…” I think I’m not in the reality that I lived in before. I think that when we teleported out, we ended up in a different one. I can’t stop thinking about that the portal in this one might still be open. I think we aren't safe. submitted by /u/DELTA129 to r/nosleep [link] [comments]

Hi, we’re scientists who are scouring the night sky for exoplanets, and then trying to determine if any might reside in the “habitable zones” of their stars. Ask us anything!
Discoveries of planets outside our solar system have burst from a trickle to a flood in recent years, transforming our understanding of the Universe. NASA's Kepler exoplanet-hunting spacecraft and other missions have shown that the Milky Way Galaxy is teeming with at least tens of billions of planets. These exoplanets come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from smaller than Earth to larger than Jupiter, and include a small number of Earth-size planets in the “habitable zones” of their stars. Telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope are carefully examining the atmospheric compositions of many of these alien worlds. However, the goals of imaging an Earth-size planet around another star and comprehensively understanding surface properties and atmospheric characteristics remain elusive. The launch of the James Webb Space Telescope in 2018 will help move comparative planetology forward, while astronomers are continuing to design and develop the next generation of observatories. As scientists deeply involved in this research, we welcome your questions about the current state of knowledge about the diversity of exoplanetary systems, and the challenges of direct imaging and atmospheric characterization in particular. We’re especially interested in telescope concepts under development to directly image exoplanets and search for water, ozone, oxygen, and other potential markers of habitability, and envision where these may take our understanding of exoplanets in the next decade.
