Before you ask, no, Bugs Bunny doesn't count, his whole universe is already silly. 1- Plastic Man (DC Comics) - Huge example of this, he is able to shapeshift into anything and due to the logic of his body he is very hard to counter, even for Batman who was lucky to help him in his lowest point to redeem himself and become a hero. 2- Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney, Marvel vs Capcom 3 to be more specific) - "Imagine having a team with Deadpool, some guy with a sword (Dante), and an attorney, and the attorney happens to be your most powerful unit", Phoenix as a joke character doesn't seem to fit at a fighting game at first, he barely reaches mid-tier on some charts, but MAN don't understimate a player who knows how to play as him. His whole gimmick is about gathering clues in the arena until he gains enough, reaches a conclusion and then counters you with an objection turns him into the most dangerous mf in existence, his turnabout mode is able to turn the table against the opponent and the super move exclusive to this mode is able to oneshot every character in the game. 3- Mr Mxyzptlk & Batmite (also DC Comics) - I don't know how could I even describe these reality warpers as a whole, let's just say that these 2 enjoy the company of Superman and Batman a lot, especially Batmite. We are glad that neither of them are truly evil or else we would be DONE. 4- The Mask (The Mask) - Let me tell you a secret: Being able to spawn guns from his hands, turn into Cuban Pete and make police dance with you, do you think that was CGI? No, that was just Jim Carrey showing his power, the director only recorded everything. 5- Luffy (One Piece) - Rubber powers and haki aren't the sole reasons of why he is so dangerous, it's how he uses these. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about the books illustrations make me feel… like I got the ick? My kids love books and in my family we try and read as wide of a variety as possible. I tell you, every time I read these books at look at this artwork? It feels like I’m reading the comics that some high school stoners drew up. The story themselves are good, even fun at times. Pete the Cat’s White Shoes has been in my toddler’s personal library since before she was born. I hadn’t read it, but it quickly became a favorite. So I started picking up more Pete the Cat books from the library and was very immediately struck by how different and less-good they were. Then I looked at the author and started to wonder, “What happened to Mr. Eric?” When you do a quick google search, you get very boilerplate answers like, “creative differences” which is a very funny way to say, “The books got successful, so the illustrator decided to give Mr. Eric’s job to his wife.” I was suspicious when I saw the author of the new, not-as-good books was the illustrator’s wife. Pretty obvious nepotism there. But didn’t want to jump to conclusions… Buuuut, after a little more digging I found a much longer article from 2014 that breaks down the whole story of the creation of Pete the Cat through the break up of James Dean and Eric Litwin annnnd, y’all I am Team Mr. Eric. Essentially, Dean creates the visual character, based on his own cat. Then, Mr. Eric, a children’s songwriter, sees the cat all over town and re-writes a song about White Shoes with Pete the Cat as the main character. The book is relatively successful, but then the next book is super successful and now Pete the Cat is on the NYT Best Seller List. So NOW Dean comes out and says he’s “always” envisioned doling out the writing duties for Pete the Cat stories to other authors. Obviously, Mr Eric is like, “naw” and the publishers are like “that’s not a good idea,” but Dean is like “It’s technically my character so FU, my wife’s gonna write the stories.” So, that’s what happened. What’s especially damning about the whole thing is that, in the article, Dean mentions he had previously tried to write a children’s book with his wife, and it hadn’t worked. And he claimed to want to “spread out the writing duties” but since 2012, Kimberly Dean has been the only Pete the Cat author. Sooo, yeah, there’s the gossip-y, drama version of why the new Pete the Cat books aren’t as good.
