Why is it frowned upon for reformer instructors to demonstrate on the machine when mat instructors demonstrate most of the class on the mat?
I see lots of comments online along the lines of “if the instructor has to demonstrate more than 3 reps on the machine they’re not a good instructor“ or “if the instructor can’t verbally cue the whole class they’re not fit to teach“ i understand the importance of being able to clearly articulate cues, what I don’t really understand why Yoga teachers or Mat Pilates instructors aren’t also constantly told they should verbally cue everything without demonstrating it? yes the difference is being on the apparatus versus on a mat which requires an additional level of safety and precision, but I don’t get the vitriol and judgement behind teachers jumping on the reformer to demonstrate especially more complex exercises when lots of people are visual learners. Would love to hear thoughts on this. submitted by /u/palmco5 to r/pilates [link] [comments]

My Pilates / Yoga / Heated Room / Spin Class Experience
E space Sometimes cramped ang space ahaha 11/10 Private Lessons - they have the most intense workouts well suited for your level, and as you go there more they intensify the workout. 6/10 Group workouts- could be better, but I find na its uncomfortable and sa iba nalang mag try. Good Studio - Restrooms are clean. Cute place but I have a thing for places that dont look high quality, its just cute but if someone overweight fell into the wall it will collapse. I dont know why that matters but its my opinion of the place, also its so dusty there haha. 7/10 Barre - great routine! But very repetitive, okay to go for one class then never 6/10 Pilates Reformer - I tried one from a clinical instructor, small Movements big impact talagang napagaralan niya, she changed my perspective sa mga pilates teachers, she also teaches in Greenhills and charges 2-3k ata but well deserved, once I get to that tax bracket Im committing to her haha. But -4 pts because I already tried her classes then I tried the another teacher she only prioritized looking good in pictures but had less impact. One person even fell in her class. Yoga- 9/10 They have good practice made me fall inlove with yoga! Electric Studio Podium - They’re my Standard in every class I go to. Their system is unbeatable. 11/10 Spin Class- sila talaga top tier. The restrooms are so clean. Plus they have 6-7am classes. The music is top tier!!!!!!! 9/10 Rhythmic Boxing- I still prefer my muay thai lessons that cost less. But the flow is great, and the teachers are so tenured na. Rave Studio 7/10 Spin class- Needs to work on their music, I find the music sometimes a bit baduy. But each to their own! But different instructors have the same routine? Which is weird for mee or medyo obvious lang and I didnt notice that in the other places I did spin. Vida Yoga BGC the CR is too cramped tas sobrang init from the stairs palang. 7/10 Hot Pilates - Holy shit that was intense and painful? But I was able to finish! I’ll give it another shot next time! I was too busy trying to breathe to asses if the routine is great haha This was a class taught by LP. I didnt realize he was famous until a couple months after. I tried other heated class di namn ganon ka intense na di naman na perfect yung form ng mga students everyone is just struggling ahahah I think a better script to what to feel wouldve made the class more approachable/ understandable. A few walked out from it being too hot and intense. That was 9 months ago so maybe things changed. Ginhawa Studio (bruh) 0/10 Mat Pilates eme eme ang routine. I miss my 600 pesos. Who makes you do splits with no feet positions then asks you to pulse, then doesnt answer when you ask what we’re supposed to feel. LIKE LEGIT SPLITS! HAHAHA This is the comment I received din from other students. 3/10 Yoga saks lang sa iba nalang kayo mag yoga Mabait naman sila!! Honestly the prettiest place I’ve been to pero wala restroom and other space basta lockers pasok practice. So the budget went to the ceiling? Lmao deffnot the teachers. Again, mabait naman sila. Yoga Pod 8/10 Yoga Ang sketchy nung place to go in at, pero pagakyat mo cute may skyline the best at night! Uhhh idk if it was just the time I went but the AC was not working but naka on, but ok lang. Practice was good, very spacious so plus points for that! Alon Yoga 8/10 Yoga was hard to find at first kasi glazed yung glass ng place but I love the energy very simple place. Not pretentious, good practice. Float Yoga 8/10 Yoga very good! Simple lang din yung place but its giving dystopian yung place of site niya hahaha I’m sorry for being honest the labas looks like a developing place in the province tas boom a pilates place? Haahah thats just me I appreciate the heated classes! Nag sstart palang. Layo from everything, sila lang ata sa place na yon may studio. 10- 8 Studio Ortigas 8/10 Reformer Pilates Great group class! Great Place too! I have nothing to say, nothing special? But if I lived nearby I would go there nalang. I go to the gym, and these classes are just an addition to my workouts, so I can’t detail the ins and outs of the classes, more so the things I notice…unlike those who fully commit to one practice ya know. So take my advice with a grain of salt (does the saying go like that?) I’m a jack of all trades ganon I would like to try Carve, Electric Pilates, Strong, Family Form, Scoop and Ultra Lagree. I might update this. submitted by /u/Expensive_Carry_6184 to r/PilatesPhilippines [link] [comments]

“Beginner” Pilates classes being used as overflow for regulars?
I’m getting back into reformer Pilates after about a year off. I used to go 2–3x/week, so I know it’s supposed to be hard — that’s not what I’m complaining about. What’s bothering me is that these “beginner” classes don’t feel like they’re actually taught for beginners. They’ll demo things like footbar settings and basic positions, but it’s very much a quick “watch me” and move on. There’s basically no form checks, no individual feedback, no real discussion of spring adjustments, and no regressions or alternatives offered. The flow itself feels like a normal class too — fast transitions, exercises layered right away, and you’re expected to just keep up. And the biggest thing: I’ve overheard multiple regulars say they prefer booking beginner classes because they’re easier to get into or they use them as extra workouts. And it’s the same women I remember seeing in all the classes when I used to go consistently, plus the ones I still see all over the studio’s Instagram in classes and instructor trainings — all in incredible shape. So what actually ends up happening is: • beginners are required to start there • regulars fill the class • and the class is run at a level that suits the regulars At that point it’s not really a beginner class. It just feels like overflow with a beginner label. And I think that’s a problem when people are paying for their first class and not getting real instruction — especially when you’ve got beginners doing unstable work (box work, balance, etc.) with basically no correction. Curious if others are seeing this too or if it’s just my area. submitted by /u/Responsible_Roof_661 to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Large group Reformer classes are ruining teaching
There was a time when I thrived teaching Pilates. Started in 2001. Taught full time. Opened my own studio in 2013. Closed 2018 to take care of dad with dimentia (only child). After the 2020 CV dust settled and I went back to teaching, in a new state, I started with CP. I am now leaving. Not only CP but teaching in general as the industry is booming, but also a nightmare in my experience. It is saturated with all these franchise methods, most people can't even tell you what Pilates is. Teaching for boutique studios the pay is poor. I get it, but all instructors in this economy and for the amount of work they put in deserve more than tiered pay, $35 base per class, low balling pvts etc. So I stuck with CP at $50 a class. 4 years later of 20+ hours a week and I am exhausted. There are amazing members that I will miss. There are also just as many that don't listen, won't slow down, go rogue and in turn the people next to them get confused. $50 may seem like alot, but not really when you consider all the prep time to teach and if you break it down that is $6 a person. So I am leaving teaching all together. For all the members reading this, appreciate your instructors even if they have a so so class that day. They work hard to teach a room of 12 different bodies at different levels with difderent learning styles while still trying to give everyone a good workout (since that is all Pilates seems to be now). For all the instructors, YOU ARE AMAZING!!❤️ submitted by /u/No-Drama724 to r/ClubPilates [link] [comments]

Would you switch from Club Pilates to LA Fitness for reformer classes? Stay or Switch?
I’m debating whether I should stay at Club Pilates or switch to LA Fitness, and I’d love some honest input from people who have tried both. Right now I pay $260/month at Club Pilates. I genuinely love the community there and I know what level classes I’m signing up for, which makes it easy to progress. But today I found out from my barista, sh goes to LA Fitness and pays about $140/month and they offer reformer Pilates classes as part of the membership; not mat. The LA Fitness membership would also include: • weights • pool • dry sauna • other class types A couple things that make me hesitate though: • LA Fitness is 22 minutes away vs 18 minutes for Club Pilates • LA Fitness reformer classes don’t have levels, so you never really know what difficulty you’re walking into • I really like the community at my Club Pilates One interesting thing I learned is that LA Fitness reformer instructors make about $65/hr vs around $45/hr at Club Pilates, which surprised me and made me wonder if the classes might be more intense or attract more experienced instructors. So I’m torn. On one hand it’s almost half the price and includes way more amenities. On the other hand I already have a routine and community at Club Pilates. If you’ve tried both, what would you do? Stay or switch? EDIT 1️⃣ I went to LA and saw the studio. It’s GORGEOUS They are using balance Body equipment just like CP However, no chair or springboard 😬 (however I don’t have many instructors using the chair. I have the beg them to use it) I don’t know if they allow weights, but he will get clarification. HOWEVER! I’ve complained before about this here, they actually have disinfectant wipes. They use a disinfectant not just Dawn and water. He is getting clarification on all the instructors they hired and what they’re trained in (classical or contemporary) He is also seeing about chairs through corporate. What I can say though is a girl said it’s like taking a hard ass 2.0 class and that’s why she switched. I also looked at the schedule and while I don’t love that they 18 reformers, they only have 3-8 people signed up per class so that’s not an issue and my location and there are 25 other location I can go too within my area. (All within 2 hours of me) there are probably 9 though that work well for me and would help me out scheduling wise cause I go all over for work. So I could legit, Pilates, shower, and go see a client. It’s hard to say no honestly submitted by /u/VeiledVerdicts to r/ClubPilates [link] [comments]

New to Pilates and finding group classes incredibly frustrating. Need to rant and seek advice
So I (32M) started doing Pilates a little over a month ago because I had injured myself weightlifting in the past and felt like I needed greater mind-body awareness as well as core/pelvic stability as a foundation to my exercise regimen. Pilates sounded like a perfect fit after doing some research and from talking to a PT I was working with. So let me start off by saying that I have no problems with Pilates as an exercise philosophy and training modality. When I'm doing the exercises properly I absolutely see the potential benefits. My problem is that group classes (or at least Club Pilates classes, my only exposure to the medium at this point) seem wildly UNDER-instructed for the level of mind-body awareness and subtle emphasis in every exercise that is necessary to perform them safely and effectively for their intended purpose. I find so much of my frustration to come down to an inability to feel comfortable/confident that I'm doing the intended exercises safely as well as with the proper body awareness and knowledge of what muscle groups are supposed to be activated. And this is largely due to the fact that there is rarely the time/space to ask instructors the level of questions I would need to feel confident in what I'm doing. This stems from multiple factors: The rather abstract nature of the reformer and other proprietary Pilates equipment; they're not intuitive pieces of equipment and many aspects of how/why we adjust different parts of them aren't really emphasized or explained for a holistic understanding. Not to mention some exercises require you to get into awkward positions and its not clear whether its uncomfortable because you're positioning yourself improperly, because you haven't adjusted some of the elements of the equipment to be more comfortable for your body size/shape, or if its just the unfortunate consequence of having a "one size fits all" device. The rapid-fire verbal description of many of the exercises during class that are not always the most intuitive or simple to visualize. Especially for someone who is a visual learner, I find I'm spending much of my time trying to parse out what was just said to me, and whether or not I've fully grasped it conceptually the instruction continues to move forward. So for many exercises I find myself just sitting and observing exercises of my classmates because the verbal description might as well be gibberish and I end up getting to barely attempt it for a few reps before we're moving onto the next exercise. The biggest problem: these exercises are deceptively simple on their face, but require a lot of subtle and intentional muscle activation that if not cued properly as well as being mindfully maintained throughout each exercise can lead to not activating the intended muscle groups effectively at all (a feeling of, "hmmm, this seems way too easy; am I doing this wrong?") and/or straining unintended muscle groups (i.e. lower back). I find this problem exacerbated by the rather fast-paced nature of the exercise flow as mentioned previously, but also the fact that the classes almost by design and student volume can't realistically be cueing everyone with the level of attention to detail that needs to be emphasized at all times. This brings me to the fundamental problem. Group Pilates is inherently NOT beginner friendly. I don't care that I'm in a "1.0" class, it is not beginner-friendly if you can't ask clarifying questions throughout, have the purpose/emphasis of movements explained, or receive regular cues and corrective feedback regarding improper positioning/movement throughout the duration of each exercise (i.e. when your body is fatigued and more likely to be making mistakes that you're not aware of until you're hurting from it later). TL;DR: Pilates is meant to be a foundational exercise philosophy built around body awareness and general stability but it requires an intense degree of focus and attention to detail to perform properly. And the irony is that the most common methods of learning it on offer (group classes, home streaming, etc.) seem ill-equipped to offer the proper level of instruction for new people to come in and learn how to do these exercises safely AND effectively. An alternative I anticipate might be suggested is "1:1 session Pilates" but I don't know how anybody who isn't making an obscene amount of money can realistically afford private sessions as a routine way of getting exercise...Group classes are already WAY more expensive than any other gym membership I've paid for in the past. How have other people gotten past these hurdles? Doing a hybrid of 1:1 classes with group classes interspersed? Finding a different studio that has more space for questions and regularly checking in on clients for cueing? Or maybe Pilates just isn't for me? submitted by /u/NOTinMYbelts to r/ClubPilates [link] [comments]

Classes where you barely use reformer
I’m just curious people’s thoughts on this. I recently went to a class in the city I grew up in, in a different region of the county from where I currently live and go to Club Pilates. I wanted to get some movement while there dealing with my mom who has dementia because it’s a stressful trip, and it helps my back injury not lock up on the plane ride back and forth. We used the reformer for all of 6 minutes of the 1.5 class….. then we were mainly on the springboard. The springboard is great, I felt it, but when I sign up and pay the price for a 1.5 I want to be on the reformer, using the equipment I don’t have access to. There doesn’t seem to be any way to know if the class will be mainly off the reformer. Am I the only one who feels this way? Is this just how it works or is a class with 6 minutes of reformer work normal? Thanks!!! submitted by /u/sciencespice1717 to r/ClubPilates [link] [comments]

Is it just me, or is a Mat class basically a humbling experience for "Reformer Divas"?
I’ve been doing Reformer 3x a week for two years. I thought I was strong. I thought I had "core stability." I thought I was ready to save money by switching to a Mat class at my local studio. I was wrong. I walked into that room thinking, "How hard can it be without the springs?" Within ten minutes of the "hundreds," I was shaking like a leaf. Turns out, the Reformer has been assisting me this whole time! Without the carriage to guide me, I realized my "form" was just me leaning on the machine for emotional support. Also, can we talk about the 2026 "AI-Posture" apps everyone is using? My phone gave me a notification halfway through class saying my "pelvic tilt was sub-optimal." I don't need my technology to join my instructor in judging me, thanks. Current 2026 pilates vibes: Half the sub says it’s a scam, the other half swears it’s the only way to save their lower back. Is $200/month for pilates classes high or standard?
I'm looking at a boutique pilates studio in my area. I did a trial class and absolutely loved the reformer. The lowest tier that's offered is 8 classes for $200/month vs unlimited classes for $250/month. As someone super frugal this feels like throwing money away as you can get a whole annual gym membership for $250 a year. The upside is, this studio seems closer to having a personal trainer. The attention I'd be getting with this membership could support me in reaching my goals. And if I love it I'm more likely to return. But, you can't have everything you love, amirite. Why aren't more people taking reformer classes?
Random question — I’ve noticed there are a bunch of reformer Pilates studios in my area, but it still seems like a lot of people either never try classes or don’t stick with it. If you haven’t done reformer Pilates (or stopped going), what’s the main reason? Is it more about: the price locations being inconvenient class times not working with work/kids no childcare feeling awkward/intimidated in group classes not knowing what to expect or something else? Just genuinely curious what turns people off or makes it hard to go regularly. Would love to hear people’s honest thoughts! Edit: If it's the price, how much would you be willing to pay or how much seems reasonable? submitted by /u/mimihopslein to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Is anyone else constantly explaining that Pilates ≠ just the reformer?
Hi all! I’m an instructor who teaches both mat and apparatus classes. Like every January, I’m seeing a wave of new clients, but this year I’ve noticed something different. Many people coming into my mat classes have only ever done reformer and didn’t even realize mat Pilates was part of the practice. I’ve found myself spending a lot more time before and after class addressing social media myths and clarifying what Pilates actually is. I genuinely enjoy educating clients, but I’m also noticing that some people see apparatus—especially the reformer—as “real” Pilates, while mat is viewed as secondary or optional. For fellow instructors: are you seeing this shift too? How do you approach educating clients Pilates is a system, and reformer is just one tool within it, not the whole practice? submitted by /u/ahpilates to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Reformer Pilates
Wondering if anyone’s tried reformer Pilates? I’m at the end of my tether. I used to love exercise and need it for mental health. But my tendons just don’t allow anything anymore. Can’t lift, even yoga seems to cause flare ups and then I’m hobbling around the house wondering if I’ll ever walk again. Tried everything. Physio. A personal trainer. Thinking if giving reformer Pilates a shot. It’s quite expensive to do the one on one but I feel I need some tailored attention before I scan jump ti classes. But another part of me is wondering if this is just another expensive detour? Ps. I’m going to speak to my provider about increasing estrogen. But realize that the tendon thing has pre-dated peri. submitted by /u/Civil-Dragonfly-9438 to r/Menopause [link] [comments]

Background: I have been doing Reformer Pilates for almost 2 years and will hit 500 classes soon. I am thinking about investing in a Studio Quality Reformer to use at home since I want more variety than what I feel like I have access to (schedule, drive time, and just structure) in studio. However, I worry about switching from instructor led to virtual. Those that have switched or decided not to switch what was your "why? And are you happy with that choice? I am also torn between the Flexia Reformer and few others so I would love to know what you chose. submitted by /u/Comfortable-Cook-973 to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Pilates beginner, is reformer too much to start with?
I’ve never done Pilates before and I’m interested in trying reformer, but I’m not sure if that’s a bad idea as a beginner. Should I start with mat classes first or is reformer actually okay (or better) for someone new? Curious what others recommend. submitted by /u/elaine_mendoza to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Moaning during Pilates class
Recently, a new lady joined one of the Pilates reformer classes I attend and she tends to moan and sometimes groan during the last part of whatever series we are working on. Examples: bridging, lunging, using the long and short straps, etc. I think it's so annoying. Anyone else have a moaned in class? submitted by /u/Sensitive-Display800 to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Got “failed” out of my Pilates 2.0 class today… is this normal??
Okay I need outside opinions because I swear this whole thing feels like BS. I’ve been doing Pilates at this studio for about two years. Their progression system is super structured: 1 → 1.5 → 2.0. You get this little check-off card with a list of skills, and when an instructor sees you can do something, they mark it. Once everything is checked, you can move up. Cool. I did ALL that. I’ve been in 1.5 forever, I’ve been consistently marked off by multiple instructors, and eventually I got the green light for 2.0. I wasn’t sneaking in, I literally followed their system. I’ve even taken four different 2.0 classes already with my usual instructors. No issues. They help when needed, I’ve been doing the class just fine, nothing seemed out of place. TODAY, I go into this “assessment class” (which no one told me I needed??) and halfway through, the instructor stops everything just to tell me she “can’t pass me.” She straight up said, “Whoever checked you off was just being nice.” Like… excuse me?? You’re basically telling me your coworkers don’t know how to do their jobs? Her entire decision was based on ONE movement..a bird dog on the reformer, which I have NEVER done, never been taught, not in 1.5, not in the four 2.0 classes I took. Then she says, “It’s not even about that specific move,” but then calls it the “easiest move” and claims other exercises should’ve prepared me for it. What exercises?? And how am I supposed to practice that movement if the other instructors don’t even teach it?? And here she comes in with her sales pitch of taking private lessons Look, I get that there are foundational skills you need to develop to move up to 2.0. I understand that practice is part of the process. But that’s the point, it needs to be communicated clearly. If the check-card system is supposed to indicate readiness, it should actually reflect what’s required. And if the assessment is about practicing X, Y, Z, then make that explicit, don’t fail me on a move I was never taught. And to top it off, the instructor doing the assessment doesn’t even teach classes, so how am I supposed to know her personal logic? Then she drops the kicker: Next time I’ll have to PAY for another assessment because “the first one is a courtesy.” Girl, I’m here to work out, not train for a career in Pilates instruction. And honestly 1.5 has been getting repetitive? I love the instructors and enjoy taking classes but I’m literally not even being challenged. So obviously the next level is 2.0? I’m paying good money over $200/month, I followed the damn system THEY created, and now this random instructor is acting like I scammed my way into 2.0 when I’ve been doing just fine in actual 2.0 classes. Is this normal?? Is the studio unorganized? Is this instructor power-tripping? Because I left feeling confused, embarrassed, and honestly kind of insulted. submitted by /u/shockedpikachu123 to r/ClubPilates [link] [comments]

Discuss: why don’t more men take barre and Pilates classes in Boston?
I’ve been going to barre and Pilates classes for about a year now, and get a lot out of them in addition to the weight training I do. I’m often the ONLY MALE in these classes, surrounded by very athletic women in their 20’s and 30’s (mostly). I do see men attending yoga classes, and lifting at the gym, of course, but rarely in barre and Pilates. The classes are excellent, and can very tough…I scratch my head as to why men shy away from taking part in these. Do guys think they’re too “feminine”? Are they afraid of being shown up by the women in those classes? Do they think that such classes aren’t beneficial? Interested in hearing from both men and women in the Boston are as to what the avoidance is all about. (And is this tendency specific to Boston? Maybe men in other cities take more of an interest in Pilates?) [Edit: thanks to all for the replies. Really interesting to hear folks’ thoughts, even the really ignorant and smart-ass ones! I’ve only done mat/floor Pilates, haven’t tried the reformer machines yet. I also do lifting and cardio at the gym, but mix in barre and Pilates in my fitness routine…it’s all good!] submitted by /u/BosGuy1996 to r/BostonSocialClub [link] [comments]

PSA: A scary Pilates secret this Halloween… your reformer might not actually be disinfected 🦇
Friendly PSA for my fellow Pilates people as we roll into cold and flu season: check what your studio is actually using to “clean” reformers between classes. I just found out my location only sprays a Dawn dish soap and water mix. Like… what? That’s not disinfecting or actually cleaning. Dish soap needs running water and friction to lift grime, misting it in a bottle just spreads a thin film around…. Which that build up could harm the equipment more, no? I understand it’s better for the reformers per the manufacturer but any gym I’ve been to provides alcohol wipes so I’m bewitched at this point. We’re all laying face-down, breathing heavy, sweating, touching straps and handles, and they’re basically giving it a bubble bath instead of actually sanitizing. It’s wild to me that this is acceptable at a big-name franchise during cold and flu season. Oh and the c0-vid protocols are outdated and not used, so that was an interesting development Nothing like holding a plank on a reformer that’s basically been wiped down with sink water and hope. 🧽🤢 I just have a big ick like creepy crawlers are on me…. 🐜 Edit: The people downvoting factual information must be the ones using dawn dish soap and water with a hope and a prayer 🤣 who knew asking for disinfectant wipes would bring out the true horror of miss information lololol All I’m asking for is too vent because my dumbass thought it was common sense to have disinfectant wipes of some kind in a workout facility that I’m paying for (not public) and a significant amount for and it's like just be up front about it; and let people make an informed decision. That way I could have invested in a mat, and straps, and such. I also wanted to see if this was common and seems fairly split on what studios are doing so I’ll just say it again. Just be up front about it; and let people make an informed decision. submitted by /u/VeiledVerdicts to r/ClubPilates [link] [comments]

I love Reformer Pilates BUT
Why does everyone clap at the end?!?!? It’s the only class I’ve been to that people clap at. I’m not sure if it’s just a thing at my local studio but it really gives me the ick 😂 there, I said it. submitted by /u/Affectionate-Wait576 to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Why are the women in Pilates classes so pretty ?
I’ve been going to hot Pilates and reformer Pilates for the last six months and when I tell you the women in the classes are literally smoking. In all different shapes and sizes too. It’s such an empowering feeling. I’ve also notice that the women in my classes are extremely cute too. They’ve motivated me to dress cute and also be social submitted by /u/bodakhello to r/pilates [link] [comments]
