Local gym with a pilates reformer machine?
Hi, I'm located in the Northeast part of Miami off Biscayne, but often work in different neighborhoods. I've gotten really into reformer pilates recently, and I'd really like to train on my own a little, but it seems like most gyms don't have reformers. Does anyone have a local rec for one that does? So far I have been using Classpass, but could see myself getting a membership for the right place. submitted by /u/girliepop98 to r/Miami [link] [comments]

Can a Pilates Reformer Help You Lose Weight?
A Pilates reformer can absolutely help with weight loss, but probably not for the reasons most people think. Reformer Pilates is less about extreme calorie burning and more about building lean muscle, improving posture, increasing core strength, and creating workouts you can actually stay consistent with long term. The spring resistance used in reformer Pilates keeps your muscles engaged throughout the workout, which helps improve muscle tone and overall body composition. Many people notice a flatter stomach, slimmer waist, and stronger legs before they even see major changes on the scale. Research has also shown that Pilates can help reduce body fat, improve flexibility, and strengthen deep core muscles, especially when practiced consistently several times a week. If your goal is faster fat loss or cardio-focused Pilates, the type of reformer you use matters more than people realize. Faster workouts with jump boards, standing movements, and dynamic transitions require a stable machine that can handle speed smoothly. That’s why many people prefer solid reformers like the Zous Pro Home Reformer or Nano Elite Plus for higher-intensity Pilates workouts. A stronger frame and smoother carriage make cardio-style sessions feel much safer and more effective. The biggest advantage of reformer Pilates is that it’s low impact and easier to recover from than many high-intensity workouts. That usually means better consistency, and consistency is what produces real long-term results. submitted by /u/PersonalHourPilates to r/PersonalHour [link] [comments]

[TW] Hilary Duff: Through "Thick and Thin"
This example is a blatant promotion of disordered eating. Hilary herself had an eating disorder, so it’s hard to see her size referred to and her weight listed like this. It wouldn’t have been good for her, nor would it have been good for women and girls who compared themselves to her. Then, the actual diet. [TW] This diet comes to 1,108 calories, which is well below the amount of calories adult women should have, especially active adult women. If people are dieting to lose weight they should have a healthy calorie deficit, but this example fits into a larger pattern of disordered eating. She doesn’t have weight to lose! There’s also no mention of health or nutrition. The normalisation of adult women eating just over 1k calories a day is terrifying! Then to promote that degree of exercise on top of that! I can’t find exactly when this example is from but I think 2006. submitted by /u/AdrianaLaServing to r/WhyWereWeOkWithThis [link] [comments]

BetterMe: Pilates Exercises On Reformer
If reformer Pilates looks a little intimidating, that’s normal. The machine looks complicated at first, but the springs and carriage are really there to help you move with more control—and that’s exactly why it can work for both beginners and more experienced people. ✨ Why Choose It? ✅ You get instant feedback: The carriage tells you pretty quickly whether you’re moving with control or just rushing through reps. The resistance is adjustable: Springs can make a movement more supportive or more challenging depending on what you need. It’s full-body without feeling random: A good reformer session can train legs, core, upper body, and overall control in one workout. You do not need a super long class: A focused session can still feel worthwhile. ⏱️ How to Start? Start with the classics: Footwork, The Hundred, Long Stretch, Elephant, Stomach Massage, and Side Sit-ups are a strong place to begin. Keep the goal simple: Learn the machine, the breathing, and the control before worrying about making it harder. 🌬 Use spring settings you can actually manage: If the carriage is flying around, that’s usually your sign to scale it back. Keep the schedule realistic: A couple of sessions per week with recovery in between is a solid starting point. 🗓 Common Mistakes to Dodge 🚫 Going too heavy on the springs: More resistance does not automatically mean better work. Rushing the return: Controlling the carriage on the way back matters just as much as pressing it out. Skipping the basics: The classic exercises are where most people actually learn the method. Doing too much too soon: You do not need to make every session harder for it to be useful. 🌿 🌸Reformer Pilates tends to feel more effective when you focus on controlled movement, steady breathing, and manageable resistance. Building a solid foundation with the basics usually leads to better progress than jumping straight into more advanced variations. ❔ Have you tried reformer Pilates before? Did you enjoy it, or did you find it more challenging than expected? ✴️ https://preview.redd.it/6o5icx437iyg1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=893fe1777cb735f60ab49dbc02d247b3e1cb6a8b submitted by /u/bettermetips to u/bettermetips [link] [comments]

High intensity reformer pilates - switched from traditional a few months ago and honestly don't see myself going back
I did classical reformer for almost a year. Loved it. Still think it's great. But I kept hitting the same ceiling — my heart rate just wasn't getting there and I started wondering if I needed to add something else on top. A few months ago I switched to HIIT (if you're interested, this was in FORM50, but that's not the point). Their format is interval-based reformer - same machine, completely different energy. Slow controlled movements, then explosive intervals, then back. No running, no jumping. But I was more winded in that first class than in most workouts I do that are specifically designed to spike heart rate. Went in expecting something similar to what I knew. It wasn't. The thing that got me most was the soreness the next day. My posterior chain was genuinely destroyed. I had been doing classical pilates for almost a year thinking I had strong glutes. Turns out I did not have strong glutes. The reformer in an interval format loads your body in a completely different way and it found every single gap I had. I tend to structure my thoughts so here's what I actually noticed after making the switch - the stuff I wish someone had told me before: You will be humbled - doesn't matter how fit you are or how long you've been on a reformer. The interval format finds muscles classical pilates never touched. First class I took modifications I didn't think I'd need. The cardio thing is real and weird - no impact, no running, nothing that looks intense from the outside, and yet your heart rate goes places. I still don't fully understand why but I've stopped questioning it. Your body changes differently - classical pilates gave me flexibility and posture. This gave me actual shape - my shoulders, my back, my legs look different. Took about 6 weeks to notice. The coaching matters more here - in classical pilates you can drift a little and still get a decent session. In an interval format if your form breaks down under fatigue you lose the point of the exercise. Good coaches make the difference and at Form50 they actually walk around and correct you individually. Recovery is part of it - i'm more sore from this than I ever was from classical. Not in a bad way, in a "my body is actually being asked new things" way. I'm not going back to classical pilates. I say that without drama - it's a great workout, it just wasn't doing everything I needed anymore. This is. Anyone else made this switch? Curious what your first few weeks felt like. submitted by /u/personbh to r/LowImpactHIIT [link] [comments]

Spending $40 a week on Pilates classes is killing me. Anyone bought a home reformer instead?
ok so I've been going to reformer Pilates classes for a few months now and honestly I love it. my back hurts less, I feel stronger, all that good stuff. but heres the thing – Im paying like $35-40 per class. sometimes I go twice a week. thats like $300 a month just on one workout. and thats before my regular gym membership.I cant keep doing this forever. so I'm thinking about just buying a reformer for my apartment. one upfront cost and then no more class fees. seems smart right? but I have no idea what Im looking at. some machines are like $500 and look like theyll fall apart. others are $5000+ and thats way out of my budget. I've been reading about the whole megaformer vs reformer thing and it's confusing – some machines are for classical Pilates (slower, more rehab focused) and others are for strength/cardio (Lagree style). I just want something solid that wont break. for anyone in Australia who's done this - where did you buy from? local or shipped from overseas? what did you pay and was it worth it? did you use it or did it become a clothes rack? I'm in a small apartment so I need something that can fold or at least not take up the whole room. but I also dont want junk that wobbles when I do planks. honestly at this point Im tempted to just keep paying for classes because at least I know it works. but my wallet is crying. someone talk some sense into me please. any advice from frugal Aussies who've been down this road? submitted by /u/naenae0402 to r/AUfrugal [link] [comments]

Has anyone here tried reformer Pilates for pelvic floor? Did it help?
I've been dealing with pelvic floor issues for a while. Tightness mostly. Not gonna go into all the details but it affects everyday stuff - sitting for too long, certain exercises, you know how it is. Ive tried the usual things. Deep breathing (still don't fully get it if I'm honest). Stretching. Some YouTube videos from pelvic floor specialists. It helps a little but nothing has really fixed the root problem. My physio mentioned Pilates a few months ago. Not as a magic cure but she said the whole focus on core connection and controlled movement with resistance could be good for pelvic floor awareness. She specifically mentioned reformer Pilates because the springs give feedback that helps you feel what your deep muscles are doing. Ive been looking into it but honestly reformers are expensive and I don't wanna drop a ton of money on something that might not work for my specific issue. I found this article that talks about is it worth buying a pilates reformer? from a cost perspective which helped a bit but it doesnt really cover pelvic floor stuff specifically. So I'm asking here -has anyone in this sub tried reformer Pilates for pelvic floor dysfunction? Did it help with tightness? With breathing connection? With that weird "I can't feel what I'm supposed to feel" problem? I'm not talking about mat Pilates. I've tried that. It's fine. But the reformer seems different because of the resistance and the way it supports your body. Also if it helped you - how long did it take to notice a difference? And did you do classes or buy a machine for home? I don't wanna waste time or money on something that doesn't work. But I also don't wanna ignore something that could help. Would love to hear real experiences from people here who've tried it. Thanks. submitted by /u/trapqueen67567 to r/PelvicFloor [link] [comments]

Has anyone here tried Pilates on a reformer for lower back pain?
I'm asking because I'm desperate and also confused.I've had lower back issues for years-herniated disc L4-L5. Tried PT, chiro, acupuncture, inversion table. Some things help for a few days but nothing lasts. My physio mentioned reformer Pilates recently said it's good for core stabilization and takes pressure off the spine its ok? I'm skeptical a little bit. Pilates seems expensive and kind of trendy, i'm not flexible, i'm not in great shape. i'm a guy in my 40s and I feel like I'd look ridiculous walking into a Pilates studio lol.also I'm scared of making my back worse. what if some movement twists wrong and I'm out for weeks? I need real talk from real people.has anyone here with actual chronic back pain tried reformer Pilates? Not the mat version – the machine with springs and the moving carriage.Did it help? Did it hurt?maybe private sessions first or just jump into group classes?does the equipment quality matter? I saw someone mention Pilates Reformers Australia when I was googling around, but I don't even know if I should be looking at buying equipment or just finding a studio. I'm not looking for medical advice. Just honest experiences. Please tell me if this helped you or if it's just another expensive detour.thanks guys submitted by /u/Nadzzyy to r/backpain [link] [comments]

Why is it frowned upon for reformer instructors to demonstrate on the machine when mat instructors demonstrate most of the class on the mat?
I see lots of comments online along the lines of “if the instructor has to demonstrate more than 3 reps on the machine they’re not a good instructor“ or “if the instructor can’t verbally cue the whole class they’re not fit to teach“ i understand the importance of being able to clearly articulate cues, what I don’t really understand why Yoga teachers or Mat Pilates instructors aren’t also constantly told they should verbally cue everything without demonstrating it? yes the difference is being on the apparatus versus on a mat which requires an additional level of safety and precision, but I don’t get the vitriol and judgement behind teachers jumping on the reformer to demonstrate especially more complex exercises when lots of people are visual learners. Would love to hear thoughts on this. submitted by /u/palmco5 to r/pilates [link] [comments]

Reformer pilates?
Hey y'all. I joined Club Pilates - and love the reformer classes - but it's so expensive. Are there any gyms around town you know of that have either reformer machines on the floor or reformer classes? Honestly with the rate I'm paying, I feel like I should probably just get a membership at Lifetime for a few bucks more and have a million different options. I'm also considering just buying a reformer to put at home, too, so maybe this is also a classified ad - holler at me if you have one to sell! submitted by /u/cheesetomymac to r/Birmingham [link] [comments]

Navigating Reformer Pilates With Hypermobility and Limited Studio Options
Hi everyone! For the last month I’ve been taking reformer Pilates classes and I absolutely love it. It’s the first form of movement that has brought me real joy in over 10 years. I have severe HMS, and reformer Pilates is the only type of exercise where I don’t experience joint pain or instability. I still feel my muscles working and being sore the next day in a healthy way, which has been amazing for me both physically and mentally. The only issue is the studios available in my area. I want to be very clear that I know these studios are not representative of all Pilates studios or instructors. Unfortunately, they are the only reformer studios accessible to me locally. Both instructors appear to come from a dance background and have transitioned into Pilates. The classes are very fast paced, and before I can fully find and stabilize correct form, we are already moving on to the next exercise. With 8 to 10 people per class, there is very limited feedback, hands on correction, or individual cueing. The first few classes felt beginner friendly, but it quickly became clear that the focus is more on visually appealing flows rather than on detailed instruction. There is very little explanation of why we are doing certain movements, where we should be feeling them, or how and why to breathe in specific ways. As someone with joint hypermobility, this lack of cueing and control concerns me. I have a background in dance and ballet, but due to medical advice I’ve been doing physical therapy with a physio for the past ten years. While that has been important for my health, it has also been extremely monotonous. Because of this history, I’m very aware of body positioning, alignment, and neutral spine. During these classes I often notice people around me moving into extreme ranges without control, and while I’m trying to optimize my own form, the class pace keeps pushing forward. That’s why I’m considering investing in a professional reformer for home use. I genuinely feel that repeating a beginner level flow at my own pace, with careful attention to alignment and control, would be safer for my body than trying to keep up with increasingly complex and fast paced group classes. I’m completely obsessed with the reformer because compared to mat work, it places far less strain on my joints, and the tactile feedback from the machine helps me stay aligned and connected. It allows me to move with control rather than collapsing into my hypermobility. My idea is to work very deliberately at home, repeating the same foundational flow, focusing on form, breath, and sensation, and only adding variations when my body is truly ready. I would also like to take occasional one on one mat Pilates sessions with a highly experienced instructor to refine my understanding of neutral alignment and breath work, and then apply that knowledge to my reformer practice. The hesitation is obviously the cost. A professional reformer is a significant investment, but paying ongoing high prices for group classes that feel rushed, under coached, and potentially unsafe for my condition feels more risky to me in the long run. I’d really appreciate hearing from instructors or practitioners, especially those familiar with hypermobility, about whether this sounds like a reasonable and responsible path forward or if there’s something important I might be overlooking? The reformer I want to buy is the Align R8 Pro, because I am used to Align reformers and I know which springs I need. But any advice on this would be helpful as well. Reformer Pilates
I’m contemplating buying a reformer machine for at home but I’m a complete beginner. I can’t make the class schedule work - I have 3 young kids but really want to change my exercise focus going forward and build strength, core and flexibility. I struggle from a weak back. It’s a big expense but I want it to become my daily form of exercise at home, and will put the time and effort in. I only know a little about reformer Pilates and have been to one class years ago. Is it something I can teach myself by following online classes etc easily enough? Will my husband also benefit from using the machine? Aldi pilates reformer machine
I just need to say my peace. The ALDI pilates reformer machine went on sale this weekend, and very limited. I was very lucky to get the last one just 10 minutes after the store opened. It's absolutely awful that I'm seeing people who are already selling these machines for twice the amount they were in store. You're selfish and awful. There would have been people who could only afford the £150 they were on sale for, and there are people who cant afford studio classes.
