I work from home, so dress casually pretty exclusively. Usually jeans/shorts and a polo. I’m trying to add options beyond jean’s and recently picked up some chinos. I don’t think this looks any more put together than it would with jeans. I think it would look better if my belt was showing, but don’t want to fully tuck my shirt and feel silly doing a French tuck. I want to start this rant by saying I don’t look down on admin staff or women who work in admin roles at industrial businesses. I worked in admin for nearly 20 years before transitioning to sheet metal fabrication so I know how essential those roles are and really value them for the amount of bullshit they deal with on my behalf. I work as a senior fabricator at a sheet metal business. I’m welding, using power tools, using forklifts, covered in sweat and grime most of my working day, and very obviously not wearing office attire when I’m at work. But still, most of the time when someone (both men and women) comes to our business for the first time, I’m assumed to be “the office girl” if I’m not introduced to them as a fabricator. - I’ve had people ask “Are you allowed to be doing that?” when I’m using power tools, using the forklifts, lifting heavy shit, setting up to weld, ya know, doing my job. Also off this one, people assume I’ve stepped out of my admin role to “help” the guys when I’m on the fabrication floor… I’m their boss when the production manager isn’t on the floor. - I walk out of my welding bay to get a drink while wearing welding leathers and my welding helmet flipped up on my head and someone calls out “Are you the office girl?” from the doorway. This has happened multiple times. - When I’ve had to go upstairs to the office, I’ve had clients who are meeting with the business owners ask me to get them a coffee. (The owners, my husband and FIL, at least correct the client and say “She’s a fabricator, getting coffee isn’t part of her job. You can go across the road to the cafe and get a coffee if you want. We’ll wait.”). Even if I go upstairs with one of the fabrication guys and clarify something with the owners, the client will often turn to me and ask for a coffee. - If the owners are showing my work to clients and an admin woman has come with the client, she usually tries to bond with me by saying something like “All this talk about boy work is so boring”. You were told that “boy work” is my work when I was introduced to you! - Also, and this is probably the pettiest thing, just being referred to as the office “girl” is annoying when I’m a nearly 40 year old woman. I mean, I’m dealing with perimenopause symptoms FFS! Sure, women who work in admin at industrial businesses here in Australia are rarely wearing what would be considered standard office attire (they usually wear a polo with the company logo, jeans, and sneakers or boots), but they certainly aren’t wearing steel caps, a full tool belt, cargo pants with a bunch more tools shoved in the pockets, and a flame retardant shirt or full welding PPE. I’m literally wearing the exact same outfit as the guys working on the fabrication floor and they’ve never been mistaken as admin staff. For context, I'm not American. I am a brown-skinned Asian from SouthEast Asia. I was visiting Houston, Texas as a tourist, when i decided to eat lunch at a Tex-Mex restaurant. It so happened my outfit (black polo shirt with black pants) were very similar in colour to the ones worn by their waiters. Only difference is the logo of my fave football club (Liverpool FC) on my shirt. I was leaving the toilet to return to my table when a guy shouted at me asking for his drink to be refilled. Never really got the whole purpose of jeans days. Personally I really don’t think kids learn any more or less based on what a person is wearing. I wore a shirt and tie with slacks and dress shoes every day my first year and the kids berated the shit out of me. I live in downtown Tokyo which sees a lot of tourists from all over the world, and when it comes to fashion I always see western (mainly white) tourists stand out. Africans, Asians and Middle Easterners will often wear clothes that are casual, but do not stand out, like long buttoned shirts, jeans etc. The women, especially those from Asia will look very fashionable with floral shirts, dresses, small practical bags etc. Then you look at the western tourists. They either wear outfits that look like they are going hiking in a tropical jungle, complete with oversized survival gear backpacks while doing city sightseeing, or they look like oversized toddlers in shorts, flip-flops and baseball caps. Today, I was out with my wife for a date at an upscale shopping mall. Some of the stores there were Fendi, Moncler, Hermes, Loro Piana, Rolex etc. As we were browsing some of the clothes, I spotted a plain white polo shirt for $1,250.00 plus tax. There's a 'fraternal club" in the USA that a vast majority of the members are boomers. In my state there are around 100 of these club houses alone. My family has been members of this particular one since the mid 40s, with my uncle being one of the former presidents of that club. So with all that in mind, I frequently volunteer around there, any thing my uncle asks me to do basically. Most of my volunteering is just cooking for them. Monday nights they want a taco night. Wednesday they want chicken wings. Friday night they want some dinner and a band. I do all the shopping for them (with the clubs credit card), all the prep, cooking, serving, and cleaning, all for free. The only thing I don't do is food running because they have waitresses that work for tips. About a month ago there was an issue. I was in the kitchen early doing the prep work for the nights dinner. In walks the boomer sporting the traditional boomer outfit. White Reebok sneakers, knee high socks, jorts, a collared polo shirt tucked in, and a fresh "I served" trucker hat. Obviously this isn’t a serious problem, just an annoying one. I’m hoping some females may be able to help me out?! I’m the marketing manager for a small business in a male-dominated industry. I am the only female employee which is absolutely not a problem except for this one thing… The guys all wear these company provided polo shirts basically every day that have our logo on them. I’d describe them as nice looking Jersey material golf shirts. They also have sweatshirts, vests, and jackets with our logo on them, basically an outfit for any occasion lol. Anyways, the shirts are given to employees for free and there are two sizes: Men’s Large and Extra Large. To be fair they were ordered before I ever worked there. I’m a slim/average 5’8” woman and even the large is like a ridiculous tent dress on me. As the marketing manager I attend a lot of events where they wear these shirts. Someone’s story about their friend wearing a skirt to school and getting bloomers reminded me of my own malicious compliance in high school. Waaaaay back in 2013 I was a sophomore in highschool, and there was a tradition that on fridays, the cheerleaders, football players (without their pads of course) band members, and the other groups performing wore their uniforms to class. This wasn’t a written tradition, and only the cheerleaders and dance team’s uniforms broke “dress code”, nobody really batted an eye to it. I wasn’t a skirt person, but I liked dresses once and a while (once IN a while sorry). As one can tell by my user, I grew up in Texas, and it’s still significantly hot in August/September. So one time while wearing a casual sun dress in September, I was pulled out of class and reprimanded because the end of my dress was 4 inches above the knee, when the dress code said no shorter than 2. I pointed out the cheerleaders and dance teams uniforms every Friday and how they reached mid thigh at their longest, but was told that was okay because “students can wear official school uniforms”. And was sent home to change. Clearly, somehow someone had forgotten I was on the golf team. Immediately my mind was turning to the next Friday. The school had recently upgraded the golf team uniforms the year prior, and the girls team uniforms consisted of a short sleeve collared polo shirt, and a skort. If you don’t know what a skort is, it’s essentially a skirt and short shorts combined. It looks like a skirt, but they essentially act like built in bike shorts, and these fuckers were SHORT, I’d argue shorter than the average cheerleader skirt. So that next Friday (about 3 days later) to my parents surprise, I was ready to go that morning in my golf uniform, as compared to taking a bag to keep the clothes in to change into after school. But I just said “Fridays, we can wear our uniforms to class”, and they accepted without question and took me to school. Well by second period, I was sent to the office yet again and the first thing the assistant principal asked me was why I would “deliberately disobey her right after our last conversation” and threatened in school suspension, I’ll never get anywhere in life by not listening, yada yada yada. When I finally had a chance to get a word in, I said “but this is my school golf uniform” and I pointed to our schools logo that was sewn into my polo shirt. “You said students can wear official school uniforms to class, why are the cheerleader uniforms okay and mine isn’t? This isn’t even a skirt, it’s a skort, it has pants!” I still remember how pissed off she was. She stared me down for what seemed like a millennia. Then she snapped and told me to get out of her office, and go sit in the lobby area. That I knew what she meant and she would be calling my parents about this blatant disrespect. So I waited and played on my iPod and chatted with the nice secretary, trying to keep myself distracted, because in reality I had been really trying not to cry. I had massive anxiety when it came to authority, but I still had my naive sense of injustice, and I didn’t just want to let this go. After about 20 minutes, she popped her head out and in a very monotone voice, told me I could go back to class and to let teachers know I had gotten permission from the front office to wear my uniform. Then she went back in and closed the door before I could even think to respond. I spent the rest of my day dealing with teachers questioning me about my outfit and 1 or 2 calling the front office to double check my claim that I had in fact gotten permission, and went to practice after school as normal before being carpooled back home. My dad met me at the front door with a small smirk and I asked him what in the world happened because I knew he was the go-to contact for my school, so I knew she called him. He explained that when she called and tried to get him to come to the school and get me and talked about punishments for my insubordination, he immediately began to argue with her and admitted he raised his voice quite a bit, asking why I wasn’t allowed to wear my sport uniform that the school provided to me as a dress requirement at my golf practice, and mentioned taking this all the way to the school board and resolving this “obvious favoritism”. He then asked me not to do that again, but that he was proud of me, and told me “I know I had told you never to start a fight, but to always fight back, I always thought physically, but you damn sure took the advice.” Edit: I’m sorry for hurting my fellow 20 somethings with the reminder that 2013 was 8 years ago, please don’t look for gray hairs in the mirror for too long Edit 2: an even deeper apology for my 30-60 year olds who I offended even further with my edit Edit 3: I do actually need to clear something up. The band did not wear those heavy wool uniforms to school, they had their own custom shirt/nice pants combo the directors were apparently really strict about all the band kids wearing every Friday.
