It’s so confusing with these different dress codes. I think as long as folks dress in clothes they’d b happy to be seen in at a nice restaurant (maybe avoiding black or white or too dressy or too casual), all should be fine. Making my own prom dress was honestly one of the most stressful but rewarding things I’ve ever done. This was my first time ever sewing something this big, and I was scared at first because I had never sewn before and my hand sewing wasn’t the best. I kept worrying that I would mess it up or that it wouldn’t turn out how I imagined. There were moments where I felt frustrated and wanted to give up, but I stayed focused and kept trying. Little by little, I started to understand what I was doing, and everything began coming together. In the end, I actually finished the dress, and I was so proud of myself. I made my own senior prom dress!! 🫶 It’s a full A-line ballgown with a strapless bodice, and I used vintage silk from an old kimono, so it felt really special getting to connect with my heritage while also giving the fabric a new life. The silk is super lightweight, so figuring out structure and support was definitely a challenge, but I love how flowy it turned out. I also spent a lot of time placing the patterns so the designs wouldn’t get cut off and would move nicely with the dress. I took these photos outside in winter lighting to really show the fabric along with some at an atrium. I need a prom dress, but I don't want it to look like anyone else's. I need it in black, navy blue, or burgundy. I'm looking for any stores with super unique shapes and designs while still being elegant or "high class" looking if that makes sense. (ABSOLUITLY NO SEQUENS) Also anything that leans toward a more gothic style but not enough that it looks stereotypical. Nothing cheap ether, as someone who has never owned a dress I want this one to last a long time so I can wear it to other special occasions afterwards like a formal dinner. I also need the dress to be available in my size, I'm sort of thin but also balanced, sort of like the stereotypical model type except shorter? I have a really hard time finding clothes that fully fit me without being lose anywhere. The only measurements I know about myself are that I'm 5'4, a B cup, and my waist is 24'. Any online stores you recommend? I live in the Orange County aria if you know of any in person shops as well. Also I added some rough references but none of them are quite what I'm looking for. I wanted to share a project I revisited during our snowmageddon downtime. This is a senior prom dress I designed and made using vintage silk from an old kimono, connecting with my heritage while giving the fabric a new life. The dress is an A-line ballgown with a strapless bodice—clean and structured on top, flowing through the skirt. I paid careful attention to pattern placement to keep motifs intact and maintain a sense of movement. The silk is lightweight and untreated, which influenced construction and finishing, especially around support and durability. I photographed it briefly outdoors in winter light to highlight the drape and contrast of the fabric. I ended up buying this prom dress!! but now I'm second guessing it and feel like l'm not a fan.
