Whats it like living on this island? Experiences living here or growing up? Is the music a big part of the culture? How do the Beaches compare to other places in the Caribbean, US, Mexico, south America? To me it really seems like a spanish-speaking Hawaii without voting power and obviously really different from polynasian culture. I really wanna visit, and i can speak spanish but Puerto Rican spanish sounds so fast and different than the sort of Mexican Spanish I was taught by my family growing up in mainland Us. can Speak Spanish when i visit Mexico but Ill probably have to speak English I i ever get the opportunity to go. submitted by /u/dj_kaled_anotha1 to r/howislivingthere [link] [comments]

Moved to Puerto Rico and now getting bombarded with requests to visit from people we barely associate with
The title pretty much says it all. We moved from Ohio to beautiful Puerto Rico a couple of years ago. We post a lot of photos of the gorgeous beaches, the Mountain View’s from our home, how great the food is, etc. We keep getting asked by people we barely know if they can come visit and stay with us so it’s a cheap vacation for them. It’s incredibly annoying and I always feel like an AH when I make up an excuse as to why we can’t host them when in reality we’re private people who don’t want our lives uprooted for a week or two playing host. The most recent one is a cousin and his wife. I have only spoken to my cousin around three times in the last 20+ years and only at funerals for family members. I’ve met his wife briefly at two of those funerals. We’re not even Facebook friends. A few months ago he awkwardly called me and asked if him and his wife could stay at our place on a vacation in Puerto Rico. I legitimately had other plans during the time they wanted to come visit and politely declined. I’m sure it’s primarily his wife pushing it because she was in the background for the entire call. Tonight, I get a message request on Facebook from his wife asking if the two of them PLUS two of their friends can come stay with us for a week in June. I don’t understand how people have the audacity to feel entitled enough to ask for something like this. I don’t even enjoy hosting close friends and family much less people I barely know. Being a host is a lot of work. You feel obligated to show your guests a good time, feed them, make sure they’re comfortable, etc. I’m not going to respond to the Facebook message request but if they have the nerve to call again I’m just going to lay it out for them even if it hurts their feelings. I don’t know you well enough to feel comfortable having you stay at my house for two weeks, with friends that I don’t know at all much less, and I’m really not interested in getting to know you better at all. Have a nice life and we’ll make small talk at the next funeral. submitted by /u/bored1413 to r/EntitledPeople [link] [comments]

Puerto Rico Highlights from Our Family Trip 🇵🇷
As we head off on our first international trip of the year, here’s a throwback to our trip to Puerto Rico last February 2025! It was our toddler’s first flight, and we had an amazing time. My husband rented a car, which made it super easy to explore at our own pace. We stayed in Condado. Highlights of our trip • El Yunque National Forest – La Coca Falls, Yokahú Tower, Juan Diego Falls, plus a short trail. • Luquillo – Scenic drive and a beautiful beach. We loved the food kiosks, our daughter is a little foodie and had a blast empanada hopping. • Fajardo – Hike to Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, explore mangrove forests, and discover hidden beaches with plenty of wildlife. • Old San Juan – Walked around the colorful streets, fascinated by Castillo San Felipe del Morro, grabbed a piña colada at Barrachina, and enjoyed some amazing local food at Deaverdura. We would definitely go back! Next time, we’d love to explore Vieques and Culebra. submitted by /u/sheerlock-smith to r/travel [link] [comments]

Just Got Back from Puerto Rico – Here’s What We Noticed (Tips & Observations)
Hey folks – just got back from a 10 day trip to Puerto Rico and wanted to share some fresh thoughts while it’s still top of mind. Might help anyone planning something similar. 1. Getting There Was a Bit of a Mission We flew out of Buffalo/Rochester, had to connect through New York on the way down and Atlanta on the way back. Each direction had 3–4 hour layovers. So yeah… it’s not hard, but definitely not convenient either. Be ready for a long travel day. 2. Arrival Was Smooth – No Drama Once we landed, it felt like we could breathe. Renting a car was easy, roads and highways were simple to navigate, and best of all — no hustlers, no harassment, no one trying to sell you anything aggressively. People were chill, polite, and just going about their day. One oddity: at many gas stations, you can't prepay at the pump. You have to go inside, and for some reason my credit card was declined at a few of them (though it worked fine everywhere else). Also, a lot of gas stations close around 9–10pm, so plan your fill-ups accordingly. 3. Felt Safe Everywhere Seriously — no sketchy vibes, no shady characters. Whether in cities, rural areas, or beaches, it just felt safe and comfortable. The only thing if you take small roads - they are curvy and some can only let one car go through - and also watch out for pot holes they are everywhere. 4. Food & Activities Are Pricey Restaurants were easily $30 per person without alcohol. Surf lessons, ziplining, and other activities weren’t cheap either. Budget accordingly — Puerto Rico isn’t a “cheap tropical vacation” destination. 5. Beaches Were Absolutely Gorgeous Every beach we hit was stunning. If you want to check water quality, this site is super handy: https://www.caricoos.org/map/beach-water-quality One lesson learned: Culebra Island deserves more than a day trip. We did the ferry and squeezed it into one day — big mistake. If you rent a car there, it’s good for 24 hours anyway, so next time we’d go on the afternoon ferry, stay the night, and return the following afternoon. You’ll appreciate the island way more that way. We also had the best food there at a place called La Cocina del Navegante but watch the prices - we ended up paying $31 for our kid's pasta plate. 6. El Yunque, Rincón, and Cliff Jumping Spots – A++ El Yunque rainforest was gorgeous, Rincón was amazing for surfing. La Parguera was amazing to see the bioluminescent bay. We also stumbled upon a few natural “jumping holes” — deep water areas with cliffs and caves. Super fun, especially for kids. 7. Stayed in Dorado / Vega Alta – Highly Recommend Really relaxing area. NJust quiet and nice. Great home base for exploring. 8. Island Was Super Clean We were honestly shocked — no trash anywhere. Roads, beaches, towns — very well kept. 9. Toll Roads Add Up Most highways have tolls, usually about $1 per stretch. Through the rental company we ended up racking up $50+ in tolls without really realizing it. Something to keep in mind when budgeting. 10. Spanish Most younger people speak English but older ones and away from San Juan we found most people spoke Spanish and broken English. Not a problem since my wife speaks Spanish but might want to brush up on your Spanglish. 11. Abandon Buildings / Homeless Animals We saw quite a few abandon buildings and homeless dogs and cats. Kind of sad to see. That’s it for now — happy to answer any questions while everything’s still fresh in my head! submitted by /u/alexukie to r/PuertoRicoTravel [link] [comments]
