Ground and polished a piece of British Colombia Jade. It took around 70 hours to complete. I keep it outside the front door in a small rock garden. I live in Vancouver Canada. The rough piece was posted on Marketplace a four hour drive away. The shape looked interesting. It was a river rock so I knew it would be stable and take a polish as it had survived the glaciers and erosion. It had a 1/2 thick rind on it from weathering that needed to be ground away. The seller was doing demolition work on an old house and salvaged it . This was topping a driveway post. Although there are some nice areas in it, It is landscaping quality jade. Not really worth the expense to cut it up. I first polished at test area to get an idea of color,,translucense and stability. It has nice color variation and interesting "fracture" lines. That is a Makita counter top polisher. I started with a sintered 30 grit diamond grinding disc. Then 50 and 100 pads to set the final shape and remove grinding marks. Followed by 200, 400, 800, 1200, 3000, 6000, and finally 10000 grit pads. I did a small area with chrome oxide and leather but the minimal difference wasn't worth the expense as it lives outside. 4 years ago we moved into our home and the previous owner didn’t spend a lot of time or energy on the landscaping. This section of the house was the first one we identified could use a ”glow up”. I bought my house a few months ago. Long story short, my neighbor landscaped my side of the front yard as soon as my house went up for sale without the owners at the time permission but they were so tired of him that they didn’t say anything & expected next owner (me) deal with it. He landscaped it with decorative rocks, metal edging, laid soil and sod, and added lights which made it seem like it was all just 1 lawn extending from his house. He acted like he did us a favor by landscaping it and would water my side all the time on my driveway. I was afraid of adverse possession boundary acquiescence so I told him pls dont do that but he insisted and never listened. I got the property re-surveyed because the way he laid out the landscaping confused me as to my property line. After being told by neighbors that he put his business sign on our shared lawn, that was the final straw for me and I politely returned his decorative rocks and edging he put on my side. I ripped out the sod he laid down and bought chop block which you see in the first photo to separate the yards and I also planted natives. Mind you, we live in an HOA and fences to the street are not allowed so this was the only solution for a visible boundary. He seemed pissed. Hes weird. He stared at me and my landscaper as we worked. He encroached on his neighbor to the right also by 6 inches so this is not new to him. Anyway, fast forward today, he is in my side yard. He built a small retaining garden on the property line before I moved in so there’s absolutely no reason for him to be on my side to trim his trees or do any of his landscaping work. Well he did. And what you see in the 2nd photo is that he moved his “garden” more inward but did it all from my side and left all his crap on my side. He was also congregating with my neighbor to the right of me in my yard as you will see in the photo. They were talking about my plants and just walking all the area. I was pissed because they could possibly damage my plants. I was watching on the ring camera to see if they came close to it. So I raked all his garbage to his side and put red flags all along the property line. Then he came back out with his wife cleaned it up and they started going across the street and looking at his house from the front and side angles. I dont really know why he is doing all this but I cant build a fence and I only have 5.6 feet to the left of my house. How can I create privacy ? I cant plant evergreens because they would be too close to the foundation right? I want to create a dry creek bed for drainage in my backyard. Let's hear your most creative ideas on how to find and obtain free or cheap rocks/hardscape! Of course there's Marketplace/ Buy Nothing Groups. I'm willing to haul and transport and do this piecemeal, but short of grabbing a rock from the commercial landscaping every time I go to Aldi (kidding!) I'm not sure what resources there are. Is there something like ChipDrop for rocks?? This rock garden with fountain has been a huge pain in the ass since we bought our home four years ago. We've tried many natural methods to kill the weeds.We've tried manually taking them up with a pickaxe. For the last week , i've been doing a deep dig with the pickaxe , to pull out roots and really turn over the rocks and the soil substrate that's deposited here. I just got fed up with it.Looking like trash and decided, I would do it myself.Since we couldn't afford to hire a landscaper to come in with what i'm assuming would be a mini excavator to dredge through these rocks. There are about 12,600 ballots that haven’t been counted yet, but with nearly a million votes already tabulated, the margins in each city aren’t expected to shift much. So I figured a visualization would make for a good weekend project. I was inspired by this post a few years ago, and attempted to recreate the style. It's also an easy way to compare how cities have shifted since 2020 if you take Prop 50 as a referendum on the current president. If you don't see your "city" listed, it is technically not considered an incorporated city! (looking at you, North Tustin and Ladera Ranch). The soil was clay and poor soil. There was at least 2x as much of the stone on top of the soil as there was under and in the soil I had to dig out. It looks like not much and it did it in stages over 4 weeks where I teamed up with another girl I found on FB marketplace who would take my rocks that I loaded in buckets for her place. In order to amend the soil I had to take out all of the stones! Otherwise over time it would make it worse and it gets compacted! I sprayed claybreaker, added compost, mulch, seasol, and fertilised. You ever really admire someone’s brilliance but still have a hard time connecting on a emotional level? Kind of how i feel about singapore. Visited Singapore for 5 days last November. Growing up, my only image of Singapore was that classic lion fountain by the bay. And when i started work, it became my favorite stopover spot because of Changi airport, which deserves all the hype. Pictures dont do it justice. The Jewel waterfall, the sky garden (but skip the maze and bouncenet = overpriced), the insane shopping mall, the massage chairs. Literally spent half a day there just wandering, eating until i felt like a bloated cow lol There’s a reason it’s been named the world’s best airport 13 years in a row. I felt that’s exact precision and pride carries through the whole country. Even if Singapore isn’t #1 in something, you can feel the drive of it. But the wildest part is remembering that just 50–60 years ago, this place was basically a fishing village with just 2 Mil population. from third world to one of Asia’s economic powerhouses in one life time. Lee Kuan Yew’s leadership definitely shaped that , equal parts admirable and intense capitalist authoitaian. It’s awe-inspiring and, honestly, a bit sad realizing how rare that kind of foresight and execution is not every world leader. (Def cheek out the national museum of Singapore- had a lot of pictures of 60-70 years ago, crazy contrast) I had tons of fun, but every night when i was journal, Singapore gave me a weird emotional contrast. Impeccably clean, insanely efficient, incredibly fun, yet something about it felt a bit too smooth to grip onto. Does that make sense? All that said, I had a blast. On to the gooood stuffs highlights. - The hawker culture and food is unmatched . Ahhh especially the Hainan Chicken Rice (海南雞飯). - Peranakan Museum ended up being one of my favorite stops. It’s often skipped, but the beadwork and cultural blend of Chinese and Malay and indo heritage was just beautiful - Haw Par Villa was hands down the quirkiest experience. Imagine an outdoor museum of Chinese mythology with a literal “hell exhibit.” Creepy and lots of accidental hilarious statues Highlights from the trip: National Museum of Singapore, Fort Canning Park the insane Orchid Garden Cloud Forest + Flower Dome + Marina Bay Sands light show Exploring Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam. Highlight!! all so distinct yet harmoniously blended Hawker food, Malatang from Tang Tang in Parklane Mall (I got addicted. lol) Peranakan houses along Joo Chiat, The Intan, and Chijmes for coffee + tea Jewel at Changi Airport— skip the hedge maze, but the sky garden is a must. There were still quite a few things i Didn’t get to do but would loved to —> Kusu Island, Sentosa, or Little Guilin this round — if anyone’s been, I’d love to hear your thoughts. (Edit. The grass was covered by landscape fabric and mulch, at first. Then over a few years small rock garden sections were added one at a time. The groundcovers helped pull all the separate sections together. Tw: ableism. Exactly what the title says. He's got that boomer fixation on lawns being mowed very short and drowned in round up the moment a single dandelion appears. A short, plain lawn is clearly inherently superior to front gardens, Japanese style gardens, wildflowers, food forests, or any other alternative. Clover? Dandelions? Club mosses? Wild phlox? Signs of any living creature living in the grass? Round up, round up, round up. I went to school with gardening/botany in an agricultural settings as my undergrad. I really like it. I also have a permanent physical disability. So, needless to say I approach gardening a bit different. I like wild flowers, useful items not just there to be pretty, I don't mind it a little weedy. I have to be ths way because if I'm having a a bad day with fatigue and pain, watering takes priority over weeding. In the gutter of my lawn, there is a rock garden, where the rainfall spout on the roof empties. It has small stones and gravel and has been replanted with annual pansies and marigolds each year. The season is young, and I hadn't got around to putting flowers in and weeding it yet. I went out yesterday to do just that. I started a little the day before with the goal of taking big things out first and then weeding out small things and tap roots. Well, I wasn't fast enough for my dad. Keep in mind- this is my house and he doesn't live here. I walked out yesterday and he was randomly there- he'd dug all of the rocks, leveled out the natural slope that made the water flow into the street drain, took out some reseeding wild flowers , destroyed this little hollow spot where some wild ispods always hung out. There was dirt, weeds, and gravel all over the side walk. He looks up at me and says, "The neighbors were complaining about the garden. Rocks don't belong in the garden. Normal people don't use them in gardens the way you do. It gets in the way of the lawn mower(???) and makes the round up gather in puddles(????). " He went on to say that 'he knows about gardening just as much as I do' , that I was weeding it wrong and too slowly, that I was wearing the wrong footwear to do it, and that just because I'm disabled doesn't mean I have a right to a sloppy yard. A few things. The neighbors absolutely did not say that. I won a local photography thing that is an analog macro of a marigold(for privacy reasons, I'm not putting it here) growing next to some rocks last year, in my "abnormal garden." I was wearing closed toe boots. My brother has been mowing my lawn for me for the last five years and has yet to ever complain about the rock garden. I'm not sure why anyone needs to be mowing inside of a clearly defined rock garden, which is less than a foot wide and at a lower elevation than the entire rest of the lawn. I'm not even sure how a lawn mower would fit. I don't like round up and don't own any. My father does not live here and doesn't pay for my rocks, flowers, landscaping, or anything else. He's been telling everyone on my street that my disability is an intellectual disability and that he "takes care of me." He does not live here. My disability is deformed joints. Now, at this point, I was pretty upset. But I couldn't go thermonuclear because there was a loud outdoor kids' birthday party happening at my neighbor's house. The same people that my father claims hate my garden. Well, a few more of them arrived, and they stopped in their tracks halfway up their sidewalk and just stared with visibly upset looks on their faces. Especially since some of the dirt, rocks, weeds, and wild flowers had landed in their yard. Well, I stayed calm and just stood there watching him dig. He does not like the grey rock response. He does not like when I answer with "OK, dad" to statements such as "I grew up om a farm, you're supposed to take rocks out, not put them in" in a 'talking to my idiot daughter ' voice. He got mad that I wasn't helping him or being grateful. Eventually, He got VERY mad and left. I swept up the mess. He didn't throw out any of the rocks. He just left them in a big pile in my front lawn. I planted the pansies I bought and started putting all the rocks back. It's going to take a while. The neighbor mom came out of her house when he was gone and said she thought my rock garden was and that she was sorry for what happened. What the hell alternate reality are these people living in? For some reason everyone who takes the corner at my house to go down the alley likes to drive over my lawn. My wife, myself and both my kids all drive. We make the corner in everything from an old sedan to a welding truck with dual rear tires. I've tried everything from a traffic cone to planting flowers there. Everything gets run over. I do not want to damage anyone's car. So I didn't put little rocks there that could rip out the undercarriage of a vehicle. I had my BIL bring over a massive boulder. It is about three feet tall. I also planted flowers around it. Just Gerber Daisies. I was not trying to camouflage the rock, I was trying to make it more visible. The rock sits back almost two feet from the edge of my property. One of my neighbors managed to hit the rock anyways. Destroyed the left side of his car. He is mad at me and he said he is calling the cops on me for setting it up to damage cars. I laughed nat him because I checked with bylaw enforcement before I put the landscaping in. I could have built a brick wall at that corner and not be responsible if anything happens. But I didn't want to create a blind corner. Now there is a big fight going on in my neighborhood Facebook page between the people who used to cut that corner and everyone who says that it's my property. My wife says I should take the rock away. Great except she was mad at me and them when her garden got run over. My neighbor says I'm an asshole for damaging his car. I don't think I did anything wrong. AITA? Edit. Thanks for the ideas on making it more visible.
