My Rome report...
I apologize that this may be a lengthy post.. My wife and I traveled to Rome on May 7th in preparation for a Mediterranean cruise that left out of Civitavecchia. We had "2" days to see Rome. ESS at the airport was not as bad as I anticipated. The staff were helping direct people to open machines. The best advice I have is do not stick your passport all the way in. There is room for the edge of the next page of the passport to be on the glass. My wife had issues with the machine with this. Once it worked, the next issue was the finger prints. She has cold hands, so the machine had an issue picking up her prints. Leaving Rome the ESS was moving quickly, maybe a 10 minute wait at most. Maybe we were lucky to miss larger crowds. Hotel: We stayed at Hotel Stendahl. we chose it because it had good reviews and was located close to Termini Rome and the points of interest we wanted to see. The hotel was nice, excellent service, and provided a free breakfast. We arrived and they held our luggage until the official check-in time. Rome: Rome was great. We walked everywhere we wanted to go. The 2 points the greatest distance from the hotel were the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums. We purchased our tickets for each online. I cannot stress enough to buy those tickets from the official websites well in advance. The Colosseum tickets go on sale exactly 30 days to the minute (Rome time) ahead. We walked the streets, never felt uneasy in any part. Our only concern was the scooters whizzing by in the narrow streets. By walking these streets we found those "hidden gems" that everyone asks about. We would pass by a restaurant that had no customers then 100ft away there was one that was packed. We ate at one called 433. Probably ate the best tasting pizza I ever had. Pro tip: Turn on "Avoid Hills" on your map app on your phone. I learned this the hard way after the giant hill I had to drag my luggage up and down. We only saw 2 of the stereotypical pickpockets. Walking trip from the hotel to Termini. At 2 different bus stops were young girls, with the large bags, a coat draped over their arm and a map in their other hand. I have a friend who got pickpocketed earlier this year while on a bus. At breakfast I overheard a man saying he must have dropped his wallet while riding the subway, his traveling companions told him he was probably robbed. I used a travel vest for piece of mind, and my wife used a cross body bag. We avoided the bus and the subway for this reason. Also, walking the city allowed us to see more of the city. Sites visited: Day one Colosseum and Trevi Fountain. Personally I can take or leave the fountain. Yes, it is beautiful, but you can't swing a dead cat without finding other beautiful statues and fountains in the numerous piazza's we passed through while walking. Day two: Spanish Steps. Pantheon, buy your tickets at the cash only line on the left side. It was shorter and faster to gain entry. Then we walked to the Vatican. St. Peter's Basilica line was wrapped all the way around the square so we decided to skip trying to get in, so we strolled around until time for our Vatican Museum ticket. They will only let you in within a 15 minute window listed on your ticket. I saw numerous people turned away when they tried to get in over an hour early. Also, the dress code is enforced. I saw a young woman get reminded to cover her shoulders. We did not use a tour guide, and I feel like I got to see more of the exhibits. I witnessed tour groups blow by entire rooms, I entered those rooms and saw some of most amazing statures and artwork that they missed. I was in the Museum for nearly 3 hours. i could have probably spent 48 hours and still not seen everything. Floor to ceiling covered in priceless artworks. The only public transport we used was the trains. We traveled to Civitavecchia from Rome by regional train, then after our cruise from Civitavecchia to FCO. Be prepared to get very close with other travelers. The trains were packed with other cruise passengers, then all the locals piled in to make their commutes. We had to switch trains from Civitavecchia to FCO at Roma Trastevere. The second train was less full. We actually got seats on that one. Language. I used the a language learning app for 300 days and watched several Youtube videos to learn some Italian. I only had interaction with 1 store clerk in who didn't speak some English. My broken Italian was able to get my request across. So yes, learn some simple Italian words and phrases. It will help with navigation and interacting with Romans. I am keeping "permesso" in my daily language. That was very useful. Lastly, what to wear. I watched all the videos explaining what to wear while traveling in Rome. In reality it doesn't matter. I saw Italians wear baseball hats, shirts with logos, sneakers, etc. No one seemed to care. Rome is a tourist destination, everyone knows you are a tourist. Even I could spot a tourist. There is no way to "blend in". Wear what you have. It did rain on us on day 1. None was predicted on the weather app. Pack a small travel umbrella and bring it with you. I left mine in the luggage at the hotel. :( I hope this helps others planning to visit. I enjoyed my time there, a truly amazing city. I’ve been in Rome 9 hours and it doesn’t seem real
Arrived this morning - first time to Rome. Walked around Colosseum, a bit of the Forum, San Clemente, and a couple other spots. Holy fucki g shit - it’s beyond freakin’ words. For 50 years I’ve seen photos of all these things, heard about them, studied them, and now I’m 3 minutes away from the very real thing. It. Is troubling trying to comprehend it. And I have a week and many May sights to see. Holy shit. It’s unreal. EDiT: thanks for all the thoughts, suggestions, and ideas. It’s been 4 days and I’m just fascinated beyond description. Yeah, I’m just a tourist but this may be the greatest place I’ve ever been other than home. As a lover of food, history, and art, Rome is a stunning mistress. Still have a four more days then off to Florence for a while. Be sure to look for a similar post soon in the Florence sub 😄😄 Caio! Reflections After Five Days in Rome
I just finished a five‑day trip in Rome. For me, even five days felt far too short to see Rome alone. I love cultural heritage, and back home I often go for drives to historic sites or visit museums, but Rome is absolutely full of ancient remains. It felt like a dream to be able to see such magnificent cultural treasures. Since I visited at the end of January, it was less crowded than I had expected. No matter which attraction I went to, the crowds were bearable. Still, when I went out to Ostia Antica and then visited the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, I took a bus back into the city, and the moment we passed through the walls I realized just how many tourists there were. I started to think that Italians themselves might not want to come inside the walls too often. I am from Korea, and I had read a lot of accounts about people being racially discriminated against, pickpocketed, or forced to buy bracelets, so I was worried. But I did not experience any racism, people were kind, and it felt much safer than I had imagined. Of course, I used a phone strap and paid attention to my belongings, but I did not lose a single thing and was able to travel safely. I had also heard that inspectors check tickets on buses and the metro, and because the way of buying tickets is different from where I used to live, I was worried I might get confused and run into problems. In the end I never even saw a ticket inspector, and I used a contactless card and the Dropticket app, and taking the bus was not difficult at all. The food was generally good, and every gelato I tried was delicious, but the restaurants that only tourists go to were honestly very disappointing. If you only ate in those places, you would end up disappointed in Italian food. Everything else was fine, but if I had to complain about one thing, the road conditions were really bad. At one point I stepped wrong on a bumpy patch of road, fell over, and skinned my knee. I am not a Catholic, but I visited many churches, and I was deeply moved that you can see such beautiful works and also pray there for free. Seeing how many Italians still show reverence in church, I thought that these beautiful churches have not collapsed like ancient Roman remains because Catholicism is still a living faith. Ruins that are not just preserved in a museum but still give meaning to people always move me more. I feel the same way about the Buddhist statues and temples back home. Watching the many tourists, I also noticed a pattern. It felt like about eighty percent were Europeans and Americans, about fifteen percent were Asians, and the remaining five percent were from elsewhere. As time goes on, more and more people will be able to travel, but for now I was reminded that being able to travel is still a privilege. submitted by /u/Shot-Barnacle3513 to r/ItalyTravel [link] [comments]

TIL that after Rome declared war on Carthage (3rd Punic War), the Carthaginians attempted to appease them and sent an embassy to negotiate. Rome demanded that they hand over all weaponry; which they did. Then, the Romans attacked anyway.

Got almost robbed in Rome and scouted twice in Milan
Just wanted to share my experience from the past few days in Italy. In Rome, I was chased by a guy who tried to rob me(I had nothing except for my phone and passport, not a single euro); I literally had to sprint about 2 km to get away. It happened around midnight in the city centre while I was walking alone, something I regularly do in every city I visit without issues. Then, in Milan, right after leaving a mall with a Dior bag, two random guys came up to me, asked whether I spoke English and walked away. I had to request a random black bag so I could safely go to the hotel; I’m pretty sure they were checking if I was a tourist. So in just five days, I’ve had one near-robbery, two suspicious guys, and even saw multiple cars with smashed windows. I’ve been to many cities alone and never felt so unsafe. Is this common in Italy, or did I just get extremely unlucky? submitted by /u/ReaZzy-- to r/travel [link] [comments]

We moved to Rome and I hate it
We moved to Rome for my partner’s job from the UK about two months ago and I absolutely detest it. I left behind a nice life - a house with a garden, friends, family and colleagues. And Waitrose. Now we live in an apartment in the historic centre. The air absolutely stinks. Everything in Italy seems incredibly difficult. Want to go to the gym? You need a medical certificate. Want to get some personal effects sent from the UK? Oops, you ticked the wrong box and now you’ve got a charge for 70 with no clear way to appeal. There always seems to be some sort of ‘problem’ when doing anything. Particularly the men in Rome seem very rude. There seems to be this weird macho culture I haven’t encountered before. The women generally seem fine, but they seem to stare a bit. I’m not an ogre, I’m just a normal looking guy in his 30s. I feel like I’m doing something wrong by existing but I have no idea what. Financially it’s cost us thousands to move - visas, putting our stuff in storage, paying to ship things. That’s not to mention the tax benefits I’ll give up by leaving the uk (ISAs and pension). It looks like some companies offer an expat pension but the fees are much higher. The trains are amazing and the tomatoes are probably slightly nicer here. But otherwise I feel incredibly homesick. I expect I’m feeling something similar to what others have felt when moving here. Does it get better? Do you learn to live with the relentless, pointless bureaucracy eventually? Are there any positives to this cesspit? submitted by /u/anxiouscrimp to r/ItalyExpat [link] [comments]

Just got pickpocketed at Rome Termini
A word of caution for anyone travelling to Rome. We took the fast train from Florence to Rome. Post that we went to take the metro to get to our airbnb. While entering my husband and brother, passed on their cards to me and my sister in law. I think this is where the pickpocketers spotted their wallets. When I was entering the train, all 4 of us were distracted by a family of 4 people - 1 man, 1 woman and 2 kids. The man starter helping me with my luggage. The woman stared asking for directions about which metro to take. At first we were grateful but soon we found the behaviour weird as all of them got down from the metro within a min. We checked our pockets and realised ALL OF US had been mugged. They took my husband’s and brother’s wallet. Opened mine and my sister in law’s bag and took cash and wallet. All of our cards and cash were gone. Fortunately, our phones and passports were safe. Post this we got down immediately and asked for help. They asked us to look in dustbins and found nothing. We went to the police station and got the report filed in hope of getting some help from insurance. The police station report filing took more than 2 hrs and you need to have patience. Writing this to help anyone who can be cautioned and if this can be of help to anyone. submitted by /u/Difficult_Ad_3903 to r/rome [link] [comments]

Rome was amazing. I wish I prepared physically lol
No surprise Rome was an amazing place to visit. I walked more than I ever have in my life. I can’t imagine being here in the summer lol but I’m off to Firenze now. Back in Rome for 2 days before flying home. This city is a Time Machine and a way of life everyone needs to experience. submitted by /u/FilmmagicianPart2 to r/rome [link] [comments]

If you're thinking of going to Rome, DON'T!
Me and my girlfriend were so excited to go to Rome and have been all year. We learned important Italian words and were respectful the whole trip. We just finished our 5 day trip and will never be returning, feeling bitterly disappointed that we've paid for this experience. The people were horrendously rude, constantly trying to drag you into restaurants only to treat you poorly once you're in. They see you as money bags and will try to scam you at any opportunity. You are constantly barraged with people aggressively trying to sell you rubbish and harrasing you for money. I asked for help at the train station from multiple different people as we were trying to travel to Naples and somehow they were ALL painfully rude. I was told by two of the station staff that "it's not our problem". I waited in line for 20 minutes at a help desk only for the staff member to say the same thing. We met one nice waiter at a restaurant called "That's Amore". Which actually did very nice food. That was the nicest part of the whole trip. The monuments look great, but everything around them is horrible. The Vatican is by far the worst. If you are a Christian looking for a spiritual experience look elsewhere. As peddlers will be flogging dabbing pope merch at you while security "shh" you and shout at you. Most of the time I feel a lot of tourists have little respect for the countries they visit, which is why me and my girlfriend really try to be respectful and polite. But this was the complete opposite. I implore you; if you're thinking of going to Rome, DON'T! They don't deserve your custom or money. There are so many other countries that will treat you better and appreciate you being there. If you still decide to go, I will pray that you have a better experience than me and my girlfriend. Edit: I am no longer going to reply to this post as I feel like I am repeating myself. Thank you to those who responded respectfully, it has been helpful to have different perspectives. I do believe we got quite unlucky and I do take responsibility for being pulled into a restaurant! To those who called me names and overly sensitive, I find you quite funny, as it is ironic that you got so upset over the opinion of a "sensitive tourist". I do believe that the more the problems I mentioned are brushed off and overlooked, the worse It will become. Don't worry either as I shall not return to Rome are so many better places to visit! If I continue to receive hate through my inbox, I will delete this post. Thank you again to those who shared their thoughts with me respectfully! submitted by /u/Snoop_ping_gas_usual to r/rome [link] [comments]
