Stop doing the sandwich method
I’ve been in this sub for a few months now, and it feels like the same questions come up every day about what to use and what actually works. For context, I started on 0.025% tret and moved up to 0.05% back in 2020–2021. I was dealing with cystic/hormonal acne on my chin. After about 9 months, I saw improvement and stopped using it because I didn’t think I needed it anymore—until this year when my acne has just become unbearable, about five years later. Here’s how it all started: I asked my primary doctor for a dermatologist referral, but she told me to try Retin-A first and only refer me if it didn’t work. A friend who had experience with tret suggested the “sandwich” method and easing into it (2–3 times per week). At the time I never actually worked up to daily use—honestly, I think I was a bit intimidated after hearing how harsh it could be. I did a bunch of research and ended up using what the internet recommended (mostly La Roche-Posay products). My routine was applying tret at night on dry skin, using vitamin E oil on top, and only rinsing my face in the morning without cleanser (as it could be too “harsh” to cleanse) and of course, wearing sunscreen. I eventually started to cleanse in the morning but it didn’t seem to make much of a difference. I had constant peeling, especially around my nose, but didn’t think much of it because I just assume these were normal side effects. A few weeks/months in, I started getting eye floaters, which freaked me out enough to see an optometrist. He said it was normal, but what I didn’t realize at the time was that it was likely caused by the tret. The oil I was using spread it into my eye area and caused serious dryness. Fast forward to this year—I started again, but this time I followed the prescription exactly. No specific products, no sandwich method. Just apply at night and wash it off in the morning with whatever cleanser Ive been using. Here’s what I learned comparing both experiences: If you stop using tret for acne, it can come back within a year or two unless the underlying cause (like hormones) is addressed. The sandwich method can slow results and may lead to issues like peeling and irritation around the eyes. The cleanser matters less than I thought—gentle cleansers didn’t seem to fully remove the tret in the morning, which left my skin more sensitive during the day. SPF is non-negotiable. This second time has been way easier. Maybe my skin is more adjusted, or maybe I just stopped overcomplicating everything. I’m seeing major results after 4 months of daily use. Tret is strong, no doubt—but if you’re not going to use it as directed, it might not be worth it. There are plenty of over the counter options that are less intense if that’s what you’re more comfortable with. EDIT: I know applying oil on top is not necessarily the “sandwich” method. The point of this post was to emphasize the correct way to apply tret (no sandwich) vs my past mistakes and the side effects. I find the criticism/downvotes interesting. If your doctor directly tells you to sandwich, then do it. If not, stop listening to the people on Reddit. If you are only doing the sandwich method because you saw it on Reddit—don’t. Listen to your doctor. Read your prescription directions. submitted by /u/Wonderful_End_1396 to r/tretinoin [link] [comments]

Say no to sandwiches!!!
I’ve used tretinoin for over 10 years and always loved the results. But over the past year or two my face was a continual shedding mes….dry, flaky patches all the time. Like a lot of people, I got pulled into the whole “sandwich method” idea (moisturizer → tret → moisturizer) and started adding more and more products trying to stop the peeling. It never really fixed the problem. Recently I saw someone mention going back to how tretinoin was originally prescribed: just a small pea-sized amount on clean skin. Nothing before, nothing after. I tried it for a week and the difference was immediate. Not a single flaky patch. My skin feels normal again. Just sharing in case anyone else is stuck in the constant peeling cycle — sometimes the answer isn’t adding more layers or products, it’s actually doing less and sticking to the basic pea-sized amount. So happy to be back to my glowing skin where I can actually put foundation on and not look like a disaster zone submitted by /u/Intrepid_Use_8311 to r/tretinoin [link] [comments]
