What are you doing to save money in this economy?
As costs are going higher, I am continually thinking of ways to counter act this. I am constantly adjusting the thermostat depending on whether I get too cool. Hot already in New Orleans. I am getting better at watching my grocery receipts as I was charged for two items at Walmart but only purchased one. Also, I am trying to use washable containers to store food in the freezer instead of buying freezer bags and utilizing or freezing any leftovers. Food combinations may get interesting. Omelets are a great way of incorporating leftovers. In addition, I have taken up pants and blue jeans as I have been losing weight instead of buying new ones. Also, I try to repair most things if it can be glued or sewn like my under bed fabric storage containers. What are the things you do to save the most money?
My family is needing to cut down on spending in the near future. There are a few things we will not skimp on such as organic grass fed milk for our son, certain organic purchases on fruits, veggies and nuts, etc. we’re considering switching to cloth diapers because we currently have 2 under 2 in diapers, and it’s extremely expensive. We also mainly eat vegetarian, and buy things on sale often. I’m just wondering what other people do to save the most money! I guess I’m looking for ideas to trim our budget! Edit: Thank you for all the responses so far! I just want to clarify a couple of things. 1) I should have said our family would like to cut down on spending not needing to. We’d like to have some more wiggle room in our budget. 2) I have a budget, but I wasn’t wanting help with trimming my budget in the way of posting it and having people tell me where I can save. I can definitely do that. I also think it’s ultimately not the best way to go about it because I know what I’m not willing to spend less on, and someone else might feel it’s unnecessary spending (like our organic purchases). I was more so asking to see what other people have done to save money to see if there are any odd things I haven’t thought about. For example, several people mentioned about phone plans and switching to Mint Mobile. I’ve already switched to Visible, but that wouldn’t have been something I thought about on my own, my very frugal friend told me about it. Just looking for things like that! submitted by /u/pi_inthepan to r/Frugal [link] [comments]

AITA for not wanting to eat my parents’ meals while pregnant even though they’re trying to help save money?
I(28F) am pregnant and my husband (31M) and I live in our own house right next to my parents. To help us save money, my parents often buy groceries and cook dinners for all four of us, which I appreciate. The problem is my dad is extremely controlling and picky about food. He only likes a few very basic meals (like plain chicken and rice, pork chops with a ton of butter, canned vegetables, etc). When he finds something he likes, he will make it multiple times a week, so we eat the same four or five meals on rotation constantly. If I suggest something different (like not having green beans 3 days in a row), he shuts it down with “nah, nah, nah, it’s better this way.” He also complains or claims food makes him sick if it isn’t done exactly how he wants, unless he doesn’t know what’s in it, then suddenly it’s “the best thing ever.” (He claims chicken “broff” upsets his stomach when i use it to cook pasta, but if i use it without him knowing its the best pasta he has ever had) I have had strong food aversions with my pregnancy and about five of the six meals he makes now make me gag. When I turn something down, he says things like “you used to like it” or “you have ate it that way for 30 years”but I never actually liked it, I just ate it because it was what my parents made me as a kid. My mom asks me to help plan dinners for the week, but when I suggest things I can tolerate, my dad says it’s too complicated, too expensive, or that he doesn’t know how to get the ingredients. I even offer to cook it if he buys the ingredients and i write him a specific list. But we go back to his tiny list of meals because its “too complicated”. We all 4 take turns cooking at our own houses, but no matter who cooks, my dad complains all night about the food if it isn’t like plain unseasoned chicken. When I was a kid, when we went out to a fast food place and I wanted a chicken sandwich, he would insist we all get burgers because it was “easier” and even chose everyone’s toppings without letting me pick mine differently. He would order 3 identical burgers and id just have to eat it. My mom gets defensive when I turn down options they give me, and is like “we’re trying”. But it’s not like I am asking them to make lobster and steak dinners every night. For example, we plan on making chicken pie this weekend and I asked dad if we could cook the chicken on the George Forman grill and season it before and he adamantly was like “NO. Chicken pie has BOILED chicken.” I can see how I would be the AH if I was asking for expensive crazy meals, but i’m not. I am just asking or making suggestions to season or make the foods better. Edit to add: There was some confusion. We eat with them because they offered and it makes my mom happy. We do not need to eat with them nor do we rely on them for our meals. We are capable of making our own meals and paying for our own groceries. I do not expect my parents to feed us and I appreciate the offer and meals they do make for us. In fact, my husband and I cook for all 4 of us twice a week. My post is more explaining they want us over but get upset when we decide otherwise due to my food aversions. Mom phrased it as “saving money for the baby” but really it was a bid for attention to spend more time together. submitted by /u/Melodic_Cockroach_23 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

My biggest secret for actually saving money
You would have heard and read it a 1000 times but maybe only 5% of you would actually be doing it. Expense tracking. Believe me this works. Only tracking your expenses religiously will make you save money. I have been tracking my expenses for 3 years now, and I track everythjng, even 10rs purchase. It feels like a hassle at first but you develop the habit in 10-20 days. Just seeing where your money is going, seeing graphs of the categories will subconcisouly make you save money. Use any app available to track. I use one called Money Manager, but there are many others. Some get it directly from your UPI transactions but I don't want to give access. I have created expense categories that work for me, I also created a budget in the app where I tracked my expenses for a month or two and figured out my expenses and then tried to adjust it. over the years I have kept the total budget more or less same with some lifestyle inflation but it has made sure that my budget didn't increase at the same rate as my income. I also track my networth using it. The only caveat is that for the first time you have to insert where your money is stored. submitted by /u/Wonderful_Swan_1062 to r/Frugal [link] [comments]

Too addicted to saving money?
The situation: This sub truly did change my life, and after ten years of following the flow chart I am doing fine. As I pick up extra incomes whether temporary or permanent, I've floated those towards other savings goals as I kept my retirement contributions maxed out. But I can't stop myself from chasing the next mundane goal...And it's hurting to spend $20 on myself for a new keychain tool. For example: I made the mistake of using index funds as an emergency fund, so I spent the last year saving liquid money. I have three full months of expenses liquid, and combined with the index fund I'm covered for a full year. I have some extra cash as I'm skipping some planned travel this year, and I am calculating how close I can getting the liquid EF to 4-5 months. My job and health are fine, car has its own emergency fund, this is purely the itch to use money 'responsibly' and avoid guilt. Anyone else fight this? What are your thoughts? Why am I like this? submitted by /u/Highwayman1717 to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

What frugal practice has saved you the most money in 2025?
My frugal practice was stocking up on meat on sale and checking my fridge every couple of days to use up leftovers or freeze them. My husband like omelets so I add leftovers into the omelet. Soups can use up leftover veggies and meat. Also, finding new and innovative ways to repair household items and clothing. Gluing and sewing to mend things has helped alot. I have taken up my pants due to losing weight, mended holes and taken up shirts. I used JB weld to fix handle that broke on my grandma’s inherited 2 quart steel pot and on side view mirror on car that a bicycle knocked off. How much money would you spend if it meant saving your cat’s life?
This is Eeyore. He’s my goodest most sweetest boy, and it’s safe to say I don’t think I’ve ever loved anything as much as I love him. He’s my soul cat and velcro kitty. He’s been my reason for living on many difficult days. He’s helped me get through so much. This past July, I went on vacation for 2 weeks. About a week after I got home, Eeyore started having accidents outside of the litter box, straining, and peeing blood. He’d developed bladder stones. Even though I had a cat sitter while I was away, the vet said these stones were likely stress-induced from me being away for so long. With all the vet visits, labs, scans, meds, and surgery, it’s cost me about $8,000 to get Eeyore’s health back on track. This came up at dinner last night with my family. My grandma, two uncles, aunt, and cousin all gave me shit for it. They said things like, “You know how many new cats you could’ve gotten with that money?”, “It’s not like you don’t have two other cats at home”, and “If you have that much money to spend on a cat, you should be helping (my brother) pay his HOA fees”. My uncle also said, “In 20 years, Eeyore will still be dead”. The thing is, I don’t want another cat. And I love my other cats, but they’re not Eeyore. When I adopted each one of them, I took on the responsibility of making sure they are safe and well cared for. That includes treatable medical conditions. It’s going to take me a long time to recover financially from his vet bills, but I would do it time and time again if it meant saving my babies. submitted by /u/WindowKitty19 to r/cats [link] [comments]
