I’m a 33M and I just found this morning that I have sepsis, I had never even heard of it until today. So I googled it to learn more about it and these two statements below caused me to worry Sepsis is a medical emergency that can kill within hours if untreated. While many survive with quick treatment, over half of sepsis survivors die within five years due to lasting complications. Long-term survival depends on the severity (sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock), with mortality rates ranging from 30% to over 80%. Studies indicate that 40% of those who survive the first 30 days may die within two years. If these statements are true, how are sepsis survivors coping. I feel like from here on out if I make it through the initial treatment I’ll be forever scared of dying within 5 years. And if I somehow make it to 5 years I’d panic more and think “surely it’s coming within the next 5 years”. That’s such a horrible way to live life. Just a quick 1am rant before I go to the ER to admit a patient with ‘sepsis’ Turns out people aren’t ‘sick’ anymore…they’re ALL ‘septic’. There’s no such thing as community acquired pneumonia anymore, it’s only sepsis 2/2 pneumonia. Same with UTIs and cellulitis. EVERYTHING is goddam sepsis now!!! I’m on my way down to admit a patient on chemo who’s here with nausea and vomiting. ED doc said ‘she was septic when she arrived’. No, she has tachycardia and tachypnea. I asked ‘what’s the infection?’ to which he replied ‘you don’t need an infection to have sepsis’. He added, ‘she feels and looks much better after fluids. It’s a soft admit just to observe’ We’re all fucked. It’s a matter of time before CMS (hopefully) puts a stop to this nonsense. I know this sounds bad so let me explain the whole story. I grew up in a very religious household and was pressured to do everything “right”. We got married when I was 19 and had only been together for about 6 months before then. We were both virgins when we got married so things were awkward to start. He had also not dated much before me so a lot of what had happened I excused for him not being experienced or because he has ADHD. Throughout our marriage there has been an unfortunate stack of red flags that became glaringly obvious to me when my husband got sick. When he got sepsis I found myself wishing it was me instead and it was not in an altruistic way which surprised me. I had to drop everything to make sure he was taken care of and put my feelings to the side to dissect later. After a week he was finally able to come home but still struggled to walk for a while. During this time I took care of everything including talking to his bosses at work and figuring out FMLA and making doctors appointments on top of my usual responsibilities as a mother. And during this time I started to understand what it was that made me feel that way. I understood that he never did the same for me. This may seem an unfair assessment so I’ll share the few times I’ve been in the hospital since being married. The first time was when I gave birth to our daughter. He wasn’t there for the birth but I believe this is excused because he was deployed at the time. What I think is important about this time is that he was permitted to come home for about a week to meet his child. During that time we lived with his parents and while he was home he spent most of his time playing WOW with his brothers. He also contemplated leaving me home alone to visit a distant family member he barely knew who just died (I might be a butt-abyss for making him stay but he’d be gone the whole week when he was permitted to come home because of his daughter). He seemed to get annoyed with me often during this week because of how often I asked for water while breast feeding because I wasn’t allowed to go out to get it myself. After the week he went back and it was three more months until he was finally home for good. After that I didn’t need as much help because I had gotten the hang of being a mom a little better so things seemed ok. The next time I was in the hospital I was giving birth to our son. By this time he was out of the military and was able to be present for the birth. I had more complications with my son which resulted in more doctors visits and he was there thankfully for most of it. I ended up having to be induced early because I was hypertensive. At this point I kinda knew what I was doing so I didn’t ask for help from my husband but still enjoyed his time off from work. Unfortunately he decided his paternity leave was too long and asked to go back early. So he ended up missing my birthday because he chose to go back early. The last time I was in the hospital was almost exactly a year before he got sepsis. I was to have surgery to get a tubal ligation. We had talked about no longer having kids because I started to fear pregnancy (something I’m understanding better with therapy). We weighed the pros and cons of a vasectomy vs the tubal ligation. Despite the vasectomy being cheaper and safer and a shorter recovery time I was the one who was decided to go under the knife. The day of the surgery he couldn’t get off of work so I was at risk of having to figure out how to get home while coming out of anesthesia if it took too long. Thankfully it ended up ok and I got home safe but had to take care of my kids while recovering. While I was still recovering my husband talked about calling in sick because a new game released which appalled me since he didn’t offer to do the same for me. These are a few of the big examples that dont exactly cover what would happen day to day. I had realized during our whole marriage I had been pretty severely neglected. All of these issues I would try to address and talk about but were ultimately ignored as he would fall into bad habits. So I started picking apart our relationship and started to realize other issues like threatening to off himself when I set boundaries. Or pressuring me into sex even after I said no. Or refusing some of my necessities because of money issues then turning around and buying a new game or warhammer. I have told him about wanting a divorce and he threatened to off himself so instead we are in therapy. I still feel disconnected and done with the relationship and I’m not sure if I can fix it. I just feel so lost. What would be your advice on how to proceed? I was reading about a young guy who got in infection that turned septic, by the time they got to the hospital it was already too late, he had kidney and liver failure, he was intubated but still conscious, responded to basic commands and could nod his head a bit. Sorry to ask, but I was just thinking about it. My mother died in 2022 to it. She was diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer, and after they cut it out, she couldn't eat so well. On the day she died, my brother woke me up to tell me she was convulsing. Her eyes were darting and she was shaking hard. During the car ride, it's like she wasn't there. We got her to the hospital an hour later, and she passed that afternoon from a heart attack. In my first year of college when I was 18, I woke up and was vomiting continuously throughout the night. I was on the floor for hours. I decided to wait until my roommate woke up to go to urgent care. I honestly thought I had a really bad case of the flu. It was a small place. I told them I felt like I was gonna collapse. They took one look at me and said they didn’t have the equipment to treat me. They told me to go to the ER immediately. I was so weak. When they took my blood pressure they immediately brought me back and told me nothing. I was confused, tired, sore and kept begging for water but was refused. After lots of tests I was eventually moved to the ICU where I was told I had sepsis. My blood pressure was 80/60 and I was tachycardic. I was told if I had come just a few hours later, I could have died.I was monitored closely for a week and had IVs and needles pricking me 24/7. I eventually left feeling tired but no longer on the brink of death Edit: Reading the stories in the comments breaks my heart. Something is SUPER not right with my body, and the internet says it’s sepsis. But while I’m miserable, I feel like it’s not bad enough to be something so deadly. 23F, Caucasian (Dutch), 143lbs, 5’9”, anemia/IBS. Eats relatively okay, drinks enough water, gets lots of exercise, and sleeps well enough. Does not smoke/drink/do drugs. Takes a cocktail of several antidepressants/antianxiety/mood stabilizers/antipsychotics, with no changes to the formula for the past seven years or so. Also a 1-a-Day vitamin and a probiotic Yakult drink every morning. I have a temperature of 95.3F (checked with two different thermometers) a fast heart rate, shortness of breath, my BP is 81/53, and I’m shaky and more tired than I’ve ever been in my life. I’m nauseous and disgusted by the idea of food. My whole body aches and I don’t even want to move my hands to type this because it hurts so much. I was just worn out last night, but now I’m SURE something is wrong. But am I dying? Probably not. ..Right? I haven’t had any kind of infection lately, as far as I know. I have chronic acne that occasionally dabbles in being cystic, but nothing has been any worse than usual. No more stomach pain than usual (Chronic constipation from taking Zofran. And also on-and-off Immodium abuse, though not recently.) nor anything else of note really. I just started feeling tired and bad last night, and now, 24 hours later, I feel really tired and super bad. Still, I feel like I’d be way sicker if I did have sepsis. Or I’d be in more pain. Or something. I’d know for sure if I had a blood infection, right? I could just tell? I knew a kid in high school that has sepsis after his appendix ruptured, and he was actually on the brink of dying. “[His] blood looked like strawberry Go-gurt” he said. I don’t know if I’m there yet. I’m reluctant to go to the doctor because A) My PCP is closed by now and I can’t afford ER B) I’m scared to death of needles and I know there’s going to be at least one blood test involved. But sepsis isn’t how I want to go out. What do you think? Is sepsis a valid concern, or am I just being a weenie over being cold and tired? We were having a normal Saturday. She was in good spirits. We decided to get pizza for dinner. Shortly after she started complaining about her stomach hurting. She'd been mentioning for a few weeks about problems with her stomach and she'd been dealing with diarrhea. I figured the pizza was just too heavy and rich for her and that's what was going on. Over the course of the night she got up quite a few times to throw up. She finally was able to get some sleep and then that morning of April 25th she said 'I don't feel right' and said maybe we should go to the ER. Some backstory on my wife...she had a rough go in life with her health, both physical and mental. I'd been to the ER with her numerous times. At one point an ER doctor told us 'We're not here to diagnose or treat you, we're here to stabilize people who in a life threatening situation. Your regular doctor can help with anything else'. That really stuck with me. Also, our insurance is so awful it's almost like not having insurance at all. So we talked and I said 'let me go to the store and get you some Pepto Bismol and some 7up and let's see if we can settle your stomach, and if that doesn't help we can got to urgent care or the ER." She was lucid at that point and I even joked with her about how dramatic she was when she got sick and she laughed. As I was getting ready to leave for the store she stopped me and asked for a kiss. Then she did something she'd never done, after I kissed her and was walking out of the bedroom she asked for another kiss and told me she loved me. So I was gone for maybe 20 minutes and when I got home I found her lying on our bedroom floor and she was unresponsive. The crazy thing was I wasn't even that worried. She has a seizure disorder and I've found her in that exact same spot before and she would come around after 5 minutes or so. So I started trying to wake her up and she wasn't responding. Then I realized something was really wrong and I called 911. The paramedics arrived and worked at getting her heart started but they never got a pulse. I followed them to the hospital and almost immediately the doctor came out and said she'd passed. I'm really struggling with the guilt of not getting her to the hospital sooner. And I don't understand how something like this could happen so fast. It was maybe 11 or 12 hours from the time she said she wasn't feeling well until she was gone. The autopsy showed she'd had a gastrointestinal tear leading to sepsis. We seriously considered going to the hospital right before I went to the store, so maybe a half hour before she collapsed. Would it have made a difference? How does septic shock kill you? Can it be so sudden? Were there warning signs over the prior weeks I should have caught? If they had gotten her heart going, would her organs have been damaged? Would they have been able to diagnose and treat her in time to save her? Thank you for any responses. This is so hard. She was only 48 and such a beautiful person. I miss her so much and on top of it I'm wracked with guilt. Also I guess I wanted to share this because I wish I'd known this before. I'm an educated person but I didn't really know anything about sepsis or how deadly it is. So I guess the quarantine situation is getting to me because my health anxiety is back after almost a year of very mild anxiety. I just had an anxiety attack because this morning when I woke up my bladder hurt slightly. When I pee it doesn't hurt/burn at all but my bladder is kind of tender and hurts once in a while. I feel like it might be a UTI but since it's Easter weekend I can't get it checked out until Tuesday at the earliest. I remember hearing a few stories about a UTI reaching the kidneys and causing sepsis and major kidney failure in otherwise healthy adults and I'm terrified it'll happen to me. What if I don't wake up tomorrow? I have been wanting to know more about sepsis cause i had a recent mouth infection (it was treated) but i'm scared about it returning and possibly causing sepsis. I have many questions like, How fast does sepsis start showing symptoms, will it always cause a rash and bleeding under the skin?, Is it possible to feel fine while having it? Etc.
