We figured out quickly that something wasn’t right. The parents seemed really cool, mom used to be a teacher, their kids are very intelligent… but the girl was manipulating my daughter in subtle ways. She was constantly lying and scaring my daughter. It got to a point that my daughter was terrified to be in her room at night and couldn’t sleep because of Sam telling her scary stories and making her “promise not to tell.” There were many red flags but that was the last straw. Without going into detail about what all happened, I told the mom that the girls needed a break from playing because the age difference is too much. The mom was defensive, saying her daughter loves mine and she wouldn’t purposely hurt her and she’s just immature for her age and blah blah. My daughter is now 8 and my son is 10. Sam is now 9, almost 10. We have an open area in our backyard where lots of neighboring kids, mostly all within a 2-3 year age difference, get together and play. Sam started coming around again. The dynamic changes every time she comes around, but I don’t single her out and I have continued holding the same rules for every kid who is in our yard. Yesterday my daughter decided to spend her birthday money on some little character figure toys that were kind of pricey. My son also got some of these characters. Sam loves these particular toys and has a lot of her own. I noticed she’d been competitive about it recently, telling my kids “I have more of these than you, I have a bigger dollhouse than you.” But my kids were excited to show her their new toys and play with her. A few minutes into playing, my daughter came in the house sobbing because she already lost one of her new toys. I went outside to help her look, and this was very unlike Sam: She looked me in the eye smiling and said “Wow, she just got those toys and they’re already missing, that’s sad.” This girl rarely smiles or even acknowledges me. While we were looking, more of my kids characters went missing. It ended up being 6 of them! That was when I knew that someone outside was taking them. Sam was blaming my son. He does sometimes prank his sister, but some of his own toys were missing and I could tell he was upset about it. Sam was being so helpful looking all over for them - normally when one of the kids is crying and upset, I’ve heard Sam get impatient and scream at them “Stop crying, it’s not a big deal.” Very out of character for her to be helping. I told the kids “Well, I guess I’ll have to check the camera that is hanging right above this area. I’m sure if they rolled away into the grass we’ll find them.” Instantly Sam looked panicked and ran home. I went into my backyard, where I can see Sam’s deck, and I watched her throw some of the toys out into the grass. Then she walked through the yard pretending to look and “found” them. She frantically went back to her house for each character to pretend to find them all over our backyard, where the toys had never even been. She had told the kids she’s going to the store tomorrow to buy more of those toys. I’m pretty sure she was going to show up with their stolen toys and pretend she just happened to buy those exact ones. I told her mom what I observed, and she said “I’ll talk to her about it.” If my kids had done this, I’d be forcing them to apologize! Her parents have a history of minimizing and making excuses, so I’m sure nothing will come of it. This also isn’t the first time Sam has stolen a toy; a girl near us had one of those coveted squishy dumplings and she claimed Sam took it. I’m a little too excited for when she shows back up here and I get to tell her she is not welcome back in our yard. She’s been causing issues for years with every kid in this neighborhood. Okay so... I wasn't sure if I was gonna post this or not but I'm feeling bad for all these kids. Just the other day we got our truck and finally got those squishy dumplings that literal children call/come to our store and ask for. Almost all my managers and coworkers ended up buying them, I don't even think one made it to the sales floor as they kept the box in the front office. I watched them buy the squishy toys and even heard "oh I feel so bad" and even "I'm just gonna resell this." Like, I had a little child call that same day and ask if we had any and I had to unfortunately say no because I apparently work with a very greedy team. This isn't the first time this sort of thing happens either and I just really don't like it. It doesn't seem fair for the customers especially when it's actual children they are taking from. I just wasn't sure what to do or if I should even post but I really wanted to get another opinion on this, does this happen at other stores too and are they supposed to do that? I don't get what's going on with the obsession of buying a bunch of these squishy dumplings in hopes of getting a specific color or something. I've seen everyone on tiktok from little kids to whole grown ass adults get so excited opening these up and getting the color they wanted. What's the point of it? They are just squishies that you will probably not even play with after opening them. I can understand to an extent if it was another type of mistery toys where there are characters from a movie or game you like. I know there are loads of fakes around that potentially aren't safe. ​ I've just been into Smyth's and they were sold out.
