Are hard drives worth buying still?
Im considering buying a hard drive (either external or an internal one for my computer whatever is more reliable) since nvme ssd's have become so expensive now. Ive wanted a new nvme ssd (2tb esp) for a while now and was planning on getting one even before the prices went up. Now that they're literally $300-$500 I dont think I can really spend that kind of money for something like that. I now just want something that can store a lot of space for gaming clips and some family stuff that we currently have on a google drive. It also might be nice to play some more older, less demanding games on it too in case my main drives are full. So Im just wondering, is it worth buying an internal hard drive or are the external usb ones better now? submitted by /u/Main-Huckleberry7828 to r/buildapc [link] [comments]

Best HDD or SSD to store Personal files long term
I am not very tech savvy, just your average joe with basic computer skills for school and the workplace. My laptop is running out of storage, and I would like to have an external hard drive to store most if not all the personal videos and photos to free up my laptop. I would also like to go as paperless as possible, and I have been thinking of scanning paper documents that are important to keep, but take up a lot of physical storage room. I don't believe that I need much more than a terabyte of storage. I also understand that it is recommended to have many backups just in case. I would like to start with simply finding a good, reliable hard drive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/LeslieRina89 to r/datastorage [link] [comments]

What is the best budget friendly External Hard Drive on the market right now?
I have a lot of files on my PC I need to keep. Personal work, footage, digital art etc. But I need to free up space on my PC, So I am looking for a reliable long term storage option. Now might be a good time as any to invest in a decent external hard drive. But I don't want to just go buy something random and have it fail on me. So I'm asking for some advice on what I should go for. Ideally I don't want to spend more than 50-60 on it currently. I know that limits things a bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/Oonaik to r/datastorage [link] [comments]

Good external SSD recommendations
Looking for an affordable external SSD. I'm not the smartest computer person and most of my storage is going towards videos which I made recordings of, but I don't want to delete most of them. Any good recommendations? I don't need a 1TB drive, if anything, less than 500 GB will be good enough submitted by /u/ExplanationNice2039 to r/BuyItForLife [link] [comments]

How to protect external SSD from being corrupted via MacOS [ Sequoia ]?
Got a Macbook M4 MAX that needs storage bump. Went for the Crucial X10 8TB specifically, but I heard this might be true to many external drive... I saw quite a few reports on external SSD's being corrupted on MacOS. I don't wanna go the bulky m2 drive way. I don't need 3000mbs speed. I need storage volume. That's why those tiny SSD's of 6TB-8TB are great. As I dove down the rabbit hole- I realized some power management actions that MacOS [Sequoia] is doing in the background, which may turn off external drives + And the default "Eject" option that doesn't fully work compared to the Disk Utility's Eject- may lead to such data corruptions. I Do not know if any power users here have overcame this problem to protect their data, but if you guys are here and can give feedback, I would appreciate if you could confirm if these next steps might indeed avoid any data corruption that the MacOS might inflict (this is what I found in my research, and I wonder if these are correct): Format the external drive to APFS Although you lose access to PC read+write. Do not use exFAT, as it's less secure. Disable Spotlight indexing on that drive. Also for RayCast. To reduce "constant background chatter". Probably should be under - Settings > Siri & Spotlight > Privacy. Some say - only plug into a powered hub - this way the drive always gets power which doesn't gets cut off [=this is a cumbersome setup to walk around with, I don't like it]. Some say - Avoid hubs and plug directly to the Mac Use a Thunderbolt 4 cable. The USB 3.2 2x2 doesn't work on Macs, so the provided cable isn't safe to use on a Mac. I heard either it's better to use a Thunderbolt 4 Cable [to match the M4, and also it has better shielding] /OR to actually use a slower USB 3.0 usb-c, as anyways the speed is gonna be 10Gbps / 1000Mbs. Power & Sleep protocol: Heard it's best to Go to Battery > Options > -"Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off." => ON -"Put hard disks to sleep when possible." => OFF. The 2nd option - I actually did not see on Sequoia 15.7.3 - so it might be hidden, so there might be an alternative [not sure if it's good or safe to use]: the pmset command: * Terminal Override: sudo pmset -a disksleep 0 Use "Amphetamine App": There's a thought of only utilizing it on major syncs. Not sure if on a day to day. It should let you create a rule that whenever this external drive is found to be plugged in > then the system won't go to sleep and cut the power to the drive. I understood it should be a more elegant alternative to the "Caffeinate" Terminal command. I heard some disks might not be recognized after some time, or that their capacity all of the sudden looks very low and not true to drive, so I read something about Killing a process called fsck_apfs / pkill fsck: only as absolute last resort. But, that if some problem occurs - then there's some process that needs to occur via Disk Utiity First Ad. Only eject the drive via Disk Utility: As the normal Eject via the Finder - does not remove the drive safely and fully. Anyways, I'm not sure if this connectivity issues are solved in Tahoe. All I know is that Tahoe takes more GPU for these new UI glass and I do NOT need that so I'm sticking with Sequoia. I just need some confirmation and testimonials from power users in this community, as if those steps are true to eliminate any possibility for errors occurring because of MacOS [considering the drive itself is mechanically fine]. Many thanks for the help, guys! submitted by /u/barefut_ to r/macbookpro [link] [comments]

When you access your hard drives or cloud storage, are you afraid (yes, afraid) of making a mistake and accidentally corrupting, modifying, or deleting one of your files?
I know it sounds silly, but my files (especially PDF books) are so precious to me that I have this foolish fear, as if I were about to handle something extremely fragile. It's gotten to the point where I don't even click on my files. I only check that the folders are there and that nothing seems out of the ordinary. At the same time, I can't verify that my files are intact; I'd have to open them one by one, and I have thousands of them. I feel ashamed to be anxious about this kind of thing. Am I the only one experiencing this, or is it a typical problem for data hoarders? Edit: I do have backups: 3 clouds storages and 2 external hard drives (1 HDD and 1 SSD). submitted by /u/Caranthir-Hondero to r/DataHoarder [link] [comments]

Accidentally sent a external hard drive with a ps5
UPDATE HE SENT IT BACK! I’m a idiot I sold my ps5 disc edition. Plus a brand new controller with a stand and cables. All for £250. Buyer got an absolute bargain. However I quickly realised, I didn’t remove the SSD inside the ps5. It’s a 1TB drive which cost me £120. I reached out to the buyer and explained the situation. I told them I will cover the shipping and the packaging. They agreed to send it back once they got the ps5. Since then they have ignored all my messages. I’m such an idiot. Let this be a lesson to all. Don’t be like me. Stupid question, but I imagine I’ve got no leg to stand on with eBay? submitted by /u/Party-Employment-127 to r/ebayuk [link] [comments]

Destroying hard drives
I have a several old servers and am going to ewaste them. However I need to destroy the drives. I have over 50 drives, and don’t want to do a software solution, I don’t have the time. Any recommendations on efficient way? UPDATE. I called a local number (from google) that was really a referral service. I got several calls over the next hour from local people. I selected a local guy in the $5 to $10 per device range (sorry, don't want to give exact info) who will show up with a shredder van, and shred the drives onsite. I can watch if I like. I will get a certificate for each device. The Local guy seems really eager to help, and also offered to pick up and remove eWaste (which is why I have all the drives to begin with.) He doesn't care if I have internal or external drives, and drive cages for server hotswap drives do not need to be removed. He can also do cellphones/ipads and SSD's. Yes, he is certified. He's going to get a lot of business as we have extended the service to anyone in our company that has a personal device (or 5) that they need to get rid of. (Which is probably a good idea, as a lot of them probably have company data on them we did not know about.) I also called up some local paper shredder and scrap merchants, who mostly said they could do it around $10 per drive, but I would have to go to them, etc. submitted by /u/anothernetgeek to r/sysadmin [link] [comments]

PSA: Buying physical discs WILL NOT save space on your SSD or hard drive.
Despite what Digital Foundry suggests in their Series S Reaction, buying physical discs makes no difference in how much space a game will require to install. This is important to know going into next generation with the high cost of space.
