Small adventures on the cheaper side
I know some retirees end up spending a fair amount of well-earned money at the start of retirement, living Big Adventure dreams. A month in Greece and Turkey. Buying an RV and spending a year or two on the road touring the continent. Packing up and moving to Finland. Building a new dream home in the mountains. But I’m interested in hearing about small adventures, done on the cheap. I don’t mean solo home hobbies or domestic projects, but instead things that get you out of the house and exploring new territory or representing unusual entertainment, without a price tag over a thousand smackaroos. There are the usual itty bitty pleasures like discount seats at the movies for Tuesday matinees, but let’s shoot a little higher. Here are some things I’ve discovered or have become aware of that might be overlooked. Please add your suggestions! - Get the AllTrails app and discover all the nature trails for hiking within a 20 mile radius of your home. There are likely to be literally dozens, and some of them have several options that can be explored on different days. - Senior National Parks pass I believe is still under $100 and gives you free admission not only to national parks but pretty much any nationally managed land. How many are inside a two-day drive from you? - If you live near a university, student stage productions in the School of Fine Arts, including the black-box theater, are awesome and they love a full audience. Same for music grad student recitals on everything from classical guitar to pipe organ. - Medicare C often comes with Silver Sneakers which means not only free access to the gym but Tai Chi and yoga and pickleball and Zumba classes. - Doing “gourmet rounds” is a fun thing if you’ve got a dining room table to seat eight to ten. Four or five couples get matched up and host a four-course dinner for each other, where the rule might be that two of the courses have to be a dish you’ve never made before, or that there is a mandatory “basket ingredient” that is specified by the others you have to build a dish around (like kumquats or fish sauce or navy beans). One week (or one month, depending on cadence) it’s at your house, and another time it’s at another couple’s house, etc. - Small-town day trips, where you go to some town within 200 miles, visit the festival or other special event that is happening or see the one sight that makes that town special or eat the best cheeseburger or apple pie in the state. Sometimes you may want to spend the night at an AirBnB, sometimes you go home before bedtime. - High school marching band competitions. These sometimes will have 25 different bands, some of them 300 members strong, and will usually be held in a pro football arena. They are mind blowing. What for you? EDIT: I’m gratified to see so many retirees that have discovered the joys of day-trips to nearby towns, or day-trips to hiking. So many wonderful options in our back yards. submitted by /u/Odd_Bodkin to r/retirement [link] [comments]

Tai chi for seniors
Hello, all! I am new to this forum/thread. I am in my very early 60s and studied Wushu tai chi 30 years ago. It was an aggressive form and I definitely cannot do that anymore but I want to get back into it. I don’t really mind what form. I just need to loosen up my joints and build muscle. Does anyone know of any good videos for seniors or perhaps a YouTube channel I could reference? I appreciate your help. Thank you. submitted by /u/Fit_Albatross7020 to r/taichi [link] [comments]

Tai Chi for Strength?
(53f) I'm having my first TKR in a couple weeks. Due a variety of issues, I've not been particularly physically active and have a strong gene combination for weight gain/retention and crap joints. I remember falling on my left knee senior year of high school on the parquet gymnasium floor playing indoor hockey. That hurt a lot. Fast forward 30ish years and escalating pain, a torn meniscus repair, and increasing systemic arthritis has me looking forward to and being anxious about the LTKR. Those of you who aren't particularly athletic, have you tried tai chi either before or after? I'm not eager to try yoga because of spinal issues but wondering if tai chi via YT would be a better option... Bueller? Bueller? submitted by /u/Mobile-Piel to r/Kneereplacement [link] [comments]

Ottawa police just kicked an old lady out of Dundonald Park for doing tai chi
On most days I take my toddler to the playground in Dundonald Park (Centretown) in the morning. There's an elderly Chinese lady whose often there doing tai chai. She sometimes uses a collapsible ornamental sword while doing it. Today, some shitty person apparently had a problem with her being there and called the cops on her. So three officers came to deal with the threat she posed. The officers were unreasonably aggressive—repeatedly threatening to arrest her if she didn't comply with their instructions. The problem is: she clearly doesn't speak English. I told them she probably spoke either Cantonese or Mandarin so they should get a translator. They eventually did get someone on the phone to talk to her. But the entire time, she kept motioning that if they gave her her sword back she would leave. I could easily tell that's what she was trying to communicate but the cops apparently couldn't. The officer dealing with her was mostly interested in keeping her at arms length while aggressively telling her "I'm at my limit! You're going to be arrested." Anyway, they got an officer on the phone to explain to her that she was doing something wrong and kicked her out of the park. It was such a ridiculous thing to witness. And she probably won't come back to the park. Which is just sad. We need more seniors (and other folks) doing tai chi in our parks, not less. I caught up with her after she left the park and tried to apologize for the whole incident. She seemed to understand and said thank you. Dundonald Park, and Centretown more broadly, definitely has plenty of people who can pose a danger to public wellbeing. Elderly ladies doing tai chi don't fit that description. I know they have a stressful job, but the police need to do better. submitted by /u/holymolydoug to r/ottawa [link] [comments]
