Not sure is this actually normal? Bought a coffee machine from JB Hi-Fi on Friday morning. Machine arrived faulty and wouldn’t even complete the first rinse cycle out of the box. Just flashing red constantly. Took it back the same afternoon thinking it would be a pretty straightforward exchange/refund situation. That was apparently optimistic. Staff member starts testing the machine and first asks me to hand him some random empty 1.5L bottle sitting near the counter so he can fill the machine with water. I said no because honestly that seemed insane. So instead he uses water from his own personal drink bottle to test my brand new coffee machine. At this point I’m already wondering if I’m overreacting or if this is genuinely bizarre. Anyway. Machine still not working properly. Then he swaps my original water tank with one from the display model and suddenly the machine works. He literally tells me: “See? No problem.” I said the original water tank was clearly faulty and the machine was unusable when I received it, so I’d prefer replacement or refund. That somehow triggered a full Australian Consumer Law debate. Staff member starts loudly explaining that: “THE WATER TANK IS NOT THE COFFEE MACHINE” and keeps repeating “minor fault”. Meanwhile I’m standing there thinking: isn’t the part that lets the coffee machine actually hold water kind of important to the coffee machine? Then I pointed out the replacement tank looked scratched and still had promotional stickers on it. Staff member loudly tells me: “THIS IS NEW.” Manager finally appears after standing nearby watching the whole thing for ages. Manager then says he’s “not technical”, won’t test the machine himself, and basically just repeats whatever the staff member says. I mention I may need to submit a complaint and manager responds with: “Yeah you can do that. They can’t do anything to us.” Honestly the whole interaction became so weird that I started taking comparison photos of the two water tanks because I felt like I was losing my mind. Best part: another JB Hi-Fi refunded the machine the very next day almost immediately because yes, the original water tank actually was faulty out of the box. Still trying to work out if using your own half-finished drink bottle to test someone’s brand new food appliance is normal retail procedure now. Edit: For everyone asking, it was JB Hi-Fi Narre Warren HOME. Already lodged a complaint through the website, but the confirmation email says the “support team at our Narre Warren HOME store will be in touch”. So from what I can tell, the people I’m complaining about are also the ones handling the complaint. Starting to see why the manager didn’t seem overly concerned when I mentioned it.🤷‍♂️ Edit 2: Okay so the complaint actually ended up getting escalated past the store. Area manager emailed me today and apologised for the whole experience. From the email, it sounds like JB normal procedure is usually sending stuff off to authorised service agents first before they decide whether it gets repaired or refunded or replaced etc. So I guess that’s why the manager kept telling me it would need to be assessed for potentially 15 days to a month first. So yeah, fair enough, I can at least understand that side of it a bit more now. I think the part that still felt weird to me was more just how the whole thing was handled. Especially since the original tank actually WAS faulty, another JB refunded it almost immediately the next day, and this entire situation still involved a staff member testing a brand new coffee machine using his own drink bottle 😭 Anyway. Inspired by todays highly entertaining discussion about influencers in this sub, here‘s my rant. Looking forward to tons of downvotes :-) Question: What‘s with the water bottles? What’s with judging a backpack by its ability to carry a preferrably massive water bottle? It almost seems like a religious / militant view that at times seems ridiculous. Yes, there is a need to stay hydrated. And I live in Western Europe, where access to potable water in every day life is a given. I have a workplace with a short commute, home office, and travel frequently for work, ie always in good reach of a water source, bottled or not. I do not cross deserts. I do, however, deploy in Urban Search and Rescue for earthquakes with a UN certified team and have been to some of the large ones in the past 15 years. We are self sufficient for 10 days. We work out of our daypack, which will have a 0,5l bottle and a 2-3l water camelbak bladder or the like. Even worst case, there is always access to a water source. It might not be tasty (ie filtered), but it does the job. Back to our water issue: I get the point of having water on you. But in an everyday setting, even in (usual) tourism, does it have to be in huge bottles that weigh a ton, where water gets warm and is yuck and thick from all the mouth backwash? And does it really have to be the central issue to judging a backpack? This thought also inspired by the Aer TP4. I have the 3, which works just fine. The 4 has those massive pockets that might not be able to withstand the test of time and really screw up the aesthetic of the bag. All but one example. Had my headphones in so apparently I missed earlier the cues. He came up to me - and the part I caught was something like ‘Behalten Sie Ihre Gedanken für sich’ I just replied ‘Das ist von der Meinungsfreiheit gedeckt’ to which he said something under his breath and walked off. I just decided to leave as it was a really unpleasant interaction. Nobody around said anything either. I tried to get eye contact with another guy opposite but he just looked down. The one who was offended looked quite normal tbh- well groomed and not thuggish at all. Like a 30 something papa in a decent job you’d see sipping a coffee somewhere. I bought 2 insulated water bottles from 2 distinct brands in 2 different stores, both had the barcode sticker at the bottom, when I peeled them away, I found this metallic disc on both (it feels more plasticy but can't fully tell). In one of the bottles, the disc came off with the barcode sticker and I threw it away, but it stayed on the second bottle. My first guess is it could be an anti-theft tag of some sort.
