In Sweden, leaving a cat home alone for too long can break the law
Under updated animal welfare regulations that took effect in 2019, the Swedish Board of Agriculture requires cat owners to ensure their pets receive daily social contact and supervision. The rules state that cats should not be left alone for more than 12 hours at a time. Lawmakers framed the change as part of a broader modernization of Sweden’s Animal Welfare Act, originally strengthened in 1988 and revised again in 2018 to emphasize animals’ natural behaviors and well being. The 2019 guidance clarified that cats are social creatures who need interaction, stimulation, and regular monitoring, not just food left in a bowl. While enforcement focuses on neglect rather than punishing responsible owners, the message is clear. Companionship is considered a basic need, not a luxury. In Sweden, even independence has limits when it comes to animal care. submitted by /u/The_Dean_France to r/SipsTea [link] [comments]

i think vegan cat food is unethical - change my mind?
having a pet is a choice and if one makes that choice they should act in the best interest of the pet, otherwise don’t have a pet. as far as i know there is no scientific proof that a plant based diet can be safe for cats longterm. so until we know i actually consider feeding a cat a plant based diet as an experiment, which i am against as a vegan. the only "proof“ that people cite is either anecdotal evidence which isn’t evidence at all or the 2023 study by Andrew Knight. I feel like people that cite this story haven’t actually read it though. It’s not a longterm study, but worse the cats weren’t examined by scientists or vets, the findings of the study are based on the evaluation of the (partly vegan) pet owners. i don’t know how a pet owner could accurately assess a pets health since cats often don’t show symptoms until it’s almost too late. aside from all that the study was paid for by proveg and i would be critical of a study paid for by the meat industry as well. as of now it seems to me that insect based cat food is the most ethical option we have. but i am very welcoming of someone changing my mind with scientific sources! submitted by /u/Namika- to r/DebateAVegan [link] [comments]

I can’t afford to feed my cat’s wet food anymore
I adopted my kittens 5 months ago, they’re going to be 7 months old on the 17th. For the past five months, I’ve been let them free feed on kibble, and they get 1 wet meal per day. It used to be 3, then 2, now it’s 1, and I honestly think it needs to start being maybe more of a weekly thing. When I first adopted my kittens (I adopted 3 because they were on my Papa’s porch and at the time I could afford to take them, so I did to ease his stress) I was only responsible for them. However, my dad quit his job and blew all of his savings, and now I’m responsible for our two adult cats as well. I already am $3k in debt from vet bills because one of my kittens got insanely sick and almost died, she had to be hospitalized for three days. I can’t afford to feed 5 cats wet food every day anymore. Even just once a day, I’m going through 2 cans per meal (one can split between the kittens and one split between the two adult cats). I’d have to spend $100 just to feed them for a month, and that’s not including the dry food cost, the cost of their litter, etc. I also have to get my three kittens fixed, so that’s another cost to worry about. I’m 20 and was planning to start college in the spring. I pay nearly $700 in bills per month (insurance and rent, gas, etc.). With the way things have been lately, I can’t afford it at all anymore. I feel insanely guilty taking it away from them. They beg every night for their wet food. Would it be okay to stop feeding them wet food more than once or twice a week? UPDATE: I’m home from work now and I’ve looked into some of the options people have suggested. Tractor supply sells the same box of food I get (same quantity and all) for $20 cheaper than what I normally pay, and the litter is $10 cheaper! Also, they have 22oz cans for only $3 and I only feed 220oz every 2 weeks, so it would only cost $60 to feed them that a month!!! I’m going to keep looking around, but thank you so insanely much to everyone who offered their advice. submitted by

OK lets talk WET CAT FOOD IN THIS ECONOMY
HII what are you feeding your cats right now T.T ?! I just did a cost analysis for our cats and with vet care, treats, toys, dry food, and wet food, and litter we have spent about 2500$ on 2 cats in 2025 . we buy from pet smart, petvalu, and homes alive. I used to feed my one cat whiskas and iams wet food and Purina kitten dry food when i was a student but she would get very sick randomly at least 1x/yr sick and i later found out it was probably her food even though she really liked it. SO i started trying different brands: Merricks salmon dry food + chicken and salmon wet food combo -> good for a bit but then she started getting sick from the wet food. stopped that. Temptation treats -> she can't have those at all she gets very sick from those Tiki cat wet food + Merricks dry food combo -> good for a while until the formula for Merricks food seemed to have changed (food was a light colour) cat still ate it but started looking into it and as per what i read i found the ingredients weren't actually good for cats. They got bored of Tiki cat and learned i shouldn't be feeding them mostly fish.... SO NOW as of this year i'm on Orijen fish dry food (will be switching to chicken) + Weruva wet food (all varieties but now they don't seem to want to touch any of the flavours) for treats we do Royal Canin dental food and orijen dried duck/game treats, and dried fish, friskies soup snacks, and Churru and Catit tube snacks. The combo is great but I am looking for more affordable wet food because lets be real life has gotten VERY expensive. but i am looking for something with a good variety of flavours. Any suggestions?? I have been looking at the following wet foods: Wellness Nulo Almo Royal Canin EDITING TO ADD: thank you so much everyone!!! I'm scared to try FF because of the carageenan but seems like so many of you have had goodluck with it! maybe ill go on FF... I found this in an old reddit post so ill share here its a PDF of cat nutrition written by a DMV CAT FOOD - NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION Data compiled by Lisa A. Pierson, DVM here is her website, I'm browsing through it now and will definitely be looking at switching to wet food only. I think this will help cost wise too. Lisa's website . She seems like someone who really cares about this topic and has dedicated over 20 years to the matter. submitted by /u/Positive_Candy_5332 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Need Opinions on Wellness Core Kitten Food!
Wellness CORE Turkey, Whitefish & Chicken Kitten Food, 5 lbs. | Petco Getting a new kitten soon and for the first while I'll continue feeding her the Hill's diet her foster had her on so we can take it one transition at a time. I'm looking at this Wellness food for when we do make the switch, and I like the guaranteed analysis and the ingredients don't have too many bs lentils, etc... But at the end, it says rosemary extract, green tee extract, and spearmint extract. Rosemary I'm seeing is non-toxic, but the caffeine in green tea can be an issue and spearmint... Very much is an issue. My thought is that because they're the last two ingredients in the list maybe there's not enough for there to be an issue. And additionally, if I'm feeding her a higher ratio of wet food she'll only get a portion of that. Does anyone have experience with this food? Everything else is so perfect 😭 I thought I found the one gdi. Taking any advice or recommendations for wet and dry kitten food! I think the list I've got is: Wellness - a bit cheaper than orijen, has more wholesome ingredients, and is a bit more nutritious. PERFECT if it didn't have those bs extracts. Orijen - i think most expensive? but good analysis and decent ingredients. I am skeptical of all the lentils, chickpeas, peas this and peas that, whole navy beans, etc. TikiCat - not wild ingredients, might actually be a bit more than orijen because of the smaller portions sold at similar prices.. But 42% protein (av 38-40), 22% fat, no excess of unnecessary ingredients, although the citric acid and tannic acid has me confused but again, they're the last ingredients and I don't think they're worse than the green tea and spearmint extracts. KITTY TAX! Her name is Kyoshi, aka little Yoshi. ʚ♡ɞ https://preview.redd.it/ovyntr0j2omf1.png?width=3000&format=png&auto=webp&s=09cc0fc0d96800406a148323c7a5d5531de81e27 submitted by /u/Expensive_Suspect190 to r/catfood [link] [comments]

I caught my cat WAKING THE BABY UP FOR FOOD
My cat is on a diet. However, it became a habit for me to give him a small amount of food when I’d wake up in the wee hours to feed baby so that he wouldn’t scream at me the whole time. This was a grave error. Baby girl had been sleeping in 10 hour stretches at night for about a week (yay!) but then seemed to regress. The weird thing was that I’d get up, soothe her, change her and start feeding her…and she’d fall asleep with the nipple in her mouth after only a couple swallows. Well fellow detectives, this morning I happened to look over in the wee hours and I caught the little glutton; he was standing with his paws propped on the crib screaming his ever loving head off!! submitted by /u/throwaway999999870 to r/BabyBumps [link] [comments]

They discontinued the only food my cat can eat. I’m desperate.
According to chewy, they’ve discontinued the tender and true white fish and potato wet food formula. This is the only food my cat can eat that isn’t hydrolyzed. She has many extremely severe protein allergies, we’ve tried many foods and this is just the one she does best on. Honestly significantly better than the hydrolyzed- which just stopped the redness. The next closest being blue buffalo but we still saw hair-loss on that food. Like I’m taking this is the only thing so far that’s been working this well. I’m desperate. Does anyone have any ideas of wet food out there that is white fish exclusive? (Tuna and salmon are issues as well, so it needs to be exclusively whitefish) With no salmon oil? I can’t find anything! How do people afford feeding their cat wet food?
I occasionally feed my cat wet food because I heard that it's good for them. I did some quick maths, and realized that it would cost me over $150 to feed my cat exclusively wet food for a month. That's insanity, that literally costs just as much as me buying groceries for myself for a month. A 5.5 oz can of cat food cost a little over $3 and my cat eats 1 and a half a day. In comparison, a bag of dry food costing $110 weighing in at 15 pounds can last me over 4 months. Do people actually give their cats a full wet food diet or they have to be financially well off enough to splurge like that? submitted by /u/Seasawdog to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Cat makes pathetic sad eyes at our dinner every night-- how to help him with food insecurity?
We recently adopted our 2 year old former feral/barn cat. None of us have had a cat before so we didn't have a point of reference to compare him to. We have had him for 2 months now and every friend or family member that has ever owned a cat has said that we've hit the cat lottery. He is gentle and loving and will hop on the lap of any adult that sits down and purrs instantly. He allows me to trim his claws and actually is so relaxed he falls asleep. He tolerates the antics of my young children and has never hissed or swiped at them on purpose (he has scratched them accidentally when they're not careful dangling a cat toy in his face). He is also very dog-like in that he will follow me around, right next to my leg. And he even plays fetch with my kids! They'll throw a scrunchie toy and he runs off to get it and happily trots back to them with toy in mouth. Our only "problem" is that as a former barn cat its obvious that he had food scarcity issues. He will scarf down any food he has quickly, amd will keep eating no matter how full he is. We can't free feed because he will eat until he barfs. His foster warned us about this. So we are doing what they recommended, which is timed feedings. He is constantly jumping on counters and our dining table sniffing for food when we aren't looking. The scary thing is he even jumps on the stove top...it's an electric stove that stays hot for quite some time after you're done cooking. He knows he shouldn't because as soon as we look st him, he jumps back down. Nothing we've tried is enough for a deterrent for him not to jump. He is such a tolerant cat he doesn't care about the tin foil (just walks all over it...doesn't bother him at all), and doesn't care about getting wet. Him jumping on counters and the table is one thing--maybe a bit annoying and unsanitary, but we can deal--- but I really worry he will get a nasty burn one day from walking on a hot stove. I want to stress that he is so sweet and not aggressive at all. He never steals food from us...doesn't jump to grab it. He just hops on the dining chair and looks at our food sadly. Then he'll stick one paw up, and if we do nothing, put a second paw up, until his face is in our plate of food. If we gently push his head away from the food he doesn't resist. He just backs away and continues to look sad. His sad food face is hilarious and so sad at the same time. He does it every meal time that involves chicken. Any advice on helping him with 1) food insecurity, 2) keeping him off the stove, and 3 )hopefully off counters/dining table as well (though this is not a major concern) submitted by /u/redhatgreenhat to r/CatTraining [link] [comments]

I've given my cat wet food and now she won't stop screaming at me
I had a cross country 5 days on the road move recently. To get my cats to eat I got them a variety of wet foods. Well my oldest girl now has become addicted to it. She screams at me literally all the time now for wet food. I can't keep buying wet food as money is tight and need to get her back on her regular kibble. She's become almost unbearable. She follows me everywhere, screaming at me non stop. The only thing that quiets her rage and demands is more wet food. As soon as she's done eating, she screams at me for more. Ahe won't let me sleep. 😭 She is also now on meds for her thyroid (hyperthyroidism) which are probably amplifying her appitite. The issue is she will no longer eat the dry food. She only wants wet food and even if she's hungry, she'll just scream at me more until I give her wet food. edit: after thinking on this and reading the comments... and then sitting with my old girl a bit, I've decided to just get her more wet food. She's elderly and should have the good stuff even if it's a bit extra. I will try adding broth and liquid to the dry food we keep out as well so our other cats are getting enough moisture. Thanks everyone for the comments! I've learned a lot about cat nutrition and appreciate the knowledge from the community. 💙 Extra edit: Just so folks know who are coming in saying I'm irresponsible as a cat parent, my cats all have regular vet visits, UTD on shots, spayed/neutered and my senior has 2x bloodwork per year. All the vets I've seen have never told me to switch them off the taste of the wild kibble they are on. So I'm not trying to be irresponsible in what I feed but I've never had a vet tell me to switch them to wet food. Also want to add a little about Pancakes back story. She was up for euthanasia at a shelter I worked at. The shelter was overfull and would euth dozens of cats everyday. She was only in the shelter brought in as a stray for 24 hours till they were going to euthanize her. She was in the back room for sick cats so she never had a chance to be adopted. She had an eye infection. I was cleaning out the kennels when she reached through and grabbed my sleeve. She had little thumbs that grabbed me. I saw her and saw her sheet saying her "due date" was tomorrow. I called around and nobody wanted her. So the next morning I went into cat room and took her out. My boss let me adopt her. 11 years later here we are. I love her even though she's a pain in my ass. 💙 submitted by /u/ShowmethePitties to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Is wellness wet cat food good for cats? Looking to switch from fancy feast.
I have three cats and currently feeding them fancy feast. I picked up a can of wellness. I saw it was all natural and one of my cats liked it. AITA for kicking my sister out of my house because she refuses to stop feeding my cat vegan food?
Okay, buckle up, everyone. I (29M) have a beautiful cat named Whiskers. He’s been my partner in crime for over 8 years, and I love him more than anything in the world. Recently, my sister (25F) moved in with me temporarily while she looked for a new job and apartment because of a rough breakup. No biggie, right? Family helps family. Here’s the problem: my sister has decided that she is a “cat whisperer” and has taken it upon herself to start feeding Whiskers vegan cat food because she thinks “it’s better for his health and the planet.” First of all, Whiskers is a straight-up carnivore; we all know cats need meat! I’ve told her repeatedly that it’s not healthy for him, and he literally only wants to eat the chicken-flavored treats I buy him. But she just smirks and tells me I’m “being close-minded.” It got to the point where I caught her sneaking vegan cat food into his bowl while I was in the next room. So, in a fit of rage, I lost it. I told her she had two options: stop this insanity or get out. She chose option two, and now she’s saying I’m heartless for kicking her out over “a cat’s diet.” I’m FURIOUS that she thinks she knows better than me when it comes to my cat’s health. I mean, she’s literally willing to risk his well-being to push her absurd lifestyle on him! AITA for choosing my cat over my sister? submitted by /u/Critical-Off-Garlic to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

Husband went to pet store for dog food, adopted cat.
Title is self explanatory. I had forgotten to get dog food on my way to work, so my husband went to pick it up when he got off. I got cat pictures of the kitties waiting for adoption. Cue the awww cause I love cats. This little lady kept pulling him towards her every time he got close. He called me and was like I know you've been wanting to add another cat to the family. He thought he was getting himself a cat, she hid until I got home. She came right to me and plopped down on the couch next to me. He said well, I guess I got you a cat. She is long and dainty with tiny paws and green eyes with a tiny raspy meow to match. Still deciding a name, as all of our cats have had halloween or horror names. submitted by /u/khrayzeelady to r/CatDistributionSystem [link] [comments]

Wellness Core
Did Wellness change something about the core hard food? My cat has been eating it with no issues for a year but I picked up a new bag last weekend and she won’t touch it. I know they changed their packaging so I made sure to triple check I got the right one. We went through so many foods with her before we found Wellness so the fact she’s just not eating it now feels like we’re starting over. submitted by /u/whitneysma to r/catfood [link] [comments]

What's everyone's opinion on Wellness Core cat food?
My four year old cat is over FLUTD/a UTI. Original post here, and a follow up post here. He had been on Wellness Core dry and wet food prior to the UTI/FLUTD diagnosis. I'm a little weary of switching him back to the Wellness after the Urinary SO is done because I'm concerned that maybe it caused the crystals. I'm going to call my vet tomorrow to see what she says, but I'm curious to read everyone's opinion on here. submitted by /u/richmana to r/AskVet [link] [comments]
