I GENUINELY hope that the attack from Limbus Company is a massacre on the House of Spiders. I actually want it to be a complete bloodbath, with almost nobody except for a handful of nameless LCA goons getting killed on Limbus Company's side, and practically EVERYTHING (including Araya) in the House of Spiders being reduced to Ash. Limbus Company has been the mysterious company for a while now, I NEED to see the company aura-farming on the House of Spiders. I want a fucking flag of Limbus Company, bathed red in the blood of the Nursefathers, being raised above the burning remains of the house. I better see Bamboo-Hatted Kim slicing Valencina's arm off. I want to see Hohenheim ripping the Ring Nursefather's face in half. I want to see hundreds of Udjat jumping Matthias, with at least 20 more jumping in for every 1 he kills, and I want Matthias to scream out 'THEY JUMPING ME! THEY JUMPING ME!!' I want to see the Index Nursefather getting bounced around like a ping-pong ball between several Udjat taking turns beating the shit out of him. I want to see Yuria throwing hands with the Dihui Star, like that one scene from Ted where Ted fucking beats up John so hard that he falls into a shower. Yeah, I want that except with Yuria just fucking OBLITERATING the Dihui Star's shit, just completely fucking up her face. Like, I don't even want the Nursefathers to remain smug and shit, I WANT THEM to become genuinely terrified and realize that they fucked up big time attacking Limbus HQ. I don't even want a difficult but hard-won battle, I actually want a one-sided slaughter. Hell, the whole thing can even tie into the whole 'Ryoshu giving into her bloodlust and becoming Asura thing' and the imagery of the House of Spiders ablaze can contribute to the Painting of Hell. Arc 2 of Wings of Fire is generally less physically gory than arc 1. So you would expect that the most horrifying scene would be in those first five books. But nope. The freakiest scene in the entire series is in chapter 22 of The Darkness of Dragons. Its power doesn’t really come from what’s actually happening; it comes from how physical of a manifestation it is of Darkstalkers character. Basically, in this scene, Moon and Qibli are standing outside of Darkstalkers room, listening. And he’s creating Clearsight. He is putting spell after spell on her, trying to get her personality right. He tries giving her all of her memories, but makes her not care about the future. It doesn’t work, she just sounds like an idiot. He tries a dozen more times. In frustration, he gives her all her memories and an understanding of the situation. She asks “What have you done?”. Basically, a Clearsight he loved would hate him, and only a Clearsight he hated would love him. This is one of the scenes where animus magic works. Most of the time I’m just annoyed at how world-breaking it is, but Talons of Power and this scene in The Darkness of Dragons manage to really milk the magic system from a tonal perspective. Just like in Talons of Power, this scene has that feeling of wrongness that permeates animus magic. But the reason this scene goes deeper than that. It goes down to Darkstalker himself as a villain. Arc 2 is essentially the story of a sad immortal longing for home. Everything he does in the entire arc is trying to make everything the way it was. The way, in his mind, it should have been. A great example of this is Moon and Anemone: Consciously or unconsciously, he tries to almost make Moon into Clearsight and Anemone into Fathom in his head. This is really why he starts to hate Anemone so much. Originally, it’s Turtle, but after Turtle’s hiding spell, he slowly begins to project it on Anemone. When he looks at her, he sees Fathom, however ridiculous it is. This comes to a head when Anemone tries to enchant him, seeming to parallel the events of Darkstalker. In this moment, Anemone and Fathom become synonymous in his mind. These parallels continue in geniously subtle ways, all throughout books 9 and 10. In Talons of Power, he becomes king, fulfilling his intent in Darkstalker. He also gives the NightWings powers, and brings them to the Old Night Kingdom, trying to “Restore them to their former glory”. He’s really trying to make things the way they were. In The Darkness of Dragons, he finds Moon with a spell to protect her from Darkstalker. Darkstalker is incredibly unnerved by this. The reason? In Darkstalker, Darkstalker himself had made Clearsight a bracelet to protect her from his powers. She used that bracelet to defeat him the first time. This leads us back to the scene in question. It is the epitome of Darkstalker’s struggles. He can remake the Night Kingdom. He can remake the NightWing tribe. But he’s still alone, because he can never have Clearsight. We as humans understand loneliness. We understand melancholy. We understand sadness. And that is why this scene works so well. In this scene, he is trying to bring back to life the one thing he wants most. The one thing he can never have. Love. Dang, that got sappy. Have a meme. Me: Chapter 22 is the most unnerving possible scene in Wings of Fire. There is no way Tui can make me more physically disgusted than she did while I was reading this scene. This is the epitome of emotional perversion in Wings of Fire. Yup. The Dangerous Gift: Comes out. The Jerboa Sequence: Exists now.
