I have only been on Preply for a month after my employment contract ended & only had 1 student, so I was still just getting a hang of how preply works. This was my only source of income at the moment. Yesterday, a scammer posing as a student contacted me about classes. He said he was from a company that wanted to book classes for 5 students. I told him to go ahead & book the classes. He asked me to increase my price by a huge amount because the contract he had was for around that amount. The 1st subscription & trial came through but then he asked me to schedule the classes back to back on the same day. Also it didn’t sound like anyone was going to show up for the trial lesson. That’s when I got suspicious & started googling. At this point I still wasn’t sure if this was a scam or not or how it could even work because the money goes to me & not him. I decided to block him anyway & report the matter to preply but after talking to preply support, they permanently suspended my account “for colluding with a person doing fraud” This is deeply unfair because how could I have known it was fraud?? Also, I blocked the student during the trial lesson, before any money was charged for classes & reported the matter promptly . Does preply just expect us all to be fully knowledgeable on all the scams & fraud modus operandis?? Wanted to share my experience in case it helps anyone else, especially if you're someone who struggles with motivation and consistency in language learning. I moved to Spain pretty last minute and needed to learn Spanish. I thought I could get by with Duolingo, a book, and sheer optimism. My girlfriend is Spanish, so we practise together too, but after a few months of trying I was making a lot less progress than I expected and honestly starting to wonder if I was just bad at languages. I'd heard mixed things about Preply, so I kept putting it off and tried iTalki first. I had lessons with a few tutors there but never quite found the right fit. I finally gave Preply a go about a month ago, doing roughly two lessons a week focused mostly on conversational Spanish and everyday vocabulary. So far it's been better than I expected, but mostly because I found a tutor who suits how I learn, not because the platform itself feels radically different. I think the main thing I've taken from it so far is that tutor fit matters more than the platform. I got lucky and found someone who prioritises conversation over grammar drills and adjusts to how I'm feeling in each lesson, and that's made more difference than anything else I tried in the months before. Whether I'd have found the same on another platform with a different tutor, honestly probaby yes. The other thing that's helped is just having lessons in the calender. Before this I'd tell myself I'd study later and then a week or two would disappear. That's been my pattern with self study for as long as I can remember, so having something scheduled has made a real difference for me personally. The only thing I'd say is that it still seems like a bit of a trial and error process. I wouldn't assume the first tutor you try will be the right one, and I can imagine your experience being pretty average if you don't find a good fit quickly. A few things I've picked up that might be useful for anyone else learning Spanish or stuck in a similar rut: Showing up matters more than feeling ready. Even a messy lesson is usually better than skipping practice completely. Not clicking with a tutor is usually just a mismatch, not a sign that either of you is the problem. If motivation is your weak spot, structure helps more than willpower. That's been the biggest shift for me. Still a long way to go and way too early to call it. But after months of stop-start progress I finally feel like I'm moving forward rather than just going through the motions. This guy was one of my first students. One year ago, I reported him absent for a class and communicated the reasons why I did it, per usual. It was his last booked session and he left me on read. I increased my price significantly shortly after. Based on the knowledge I had of him, I knew that despite being well off, he is very, very cheap, so I didn’t even bother telling him about the new price and was just glad that he did not renew the subscription on his own. I think for some reason his feelings got hurt after that because he logs in every three months or so and updates his review, what I’m guessing is out of pity.😂 I don’t even teach on this platform anymore, but his updates are really amusing. He first gave me a 5-star with a long text saying how amazing I am (when we werw actually having the classes).Then after about 6-7months of the last session, it was 3 stars with a “bravo.” Then after 6 months he updated it to one star 😂 I have 30 five-star reviews, and now there's this This ridiculous feeling of unsafety and always being scared of unfair treatment from students is what made me stop teaching on this platform. I got back from a 2-week trip to Japan with my husband (yes, it was fabulous), and from the time we got through immigration to the time we returned to our airport gate back to the US, I forgot I was autistic. So a little background: I speak/read a bit of Japanese (around N4 level) and am diagnosed Level 1 ASD with cPTSD (latter is mostly quiet these days). I planned this trip with some research, having a "loose but structured" itinerary, and some suggestions from my Preply language tutor. In America, I struggle in social situations and especially overstimulation and need a lot of alone/only husband and dog time. Also disclaimer that this isn't a super serious post, just an interesting observation I wanted to share, and I understand being a tourist is much different from living in a place. For reference, I've also visited Vietnam, Thailand, and Portugal. Anyway, in Japan, there was none of that struggle. Trains are on time to the minute (and often to the second). They're also quiet, even when they're packed! When someone needs to get off, people try their best to move. While there are loud, bright places like Shibuya or Shinjuku, it's easy to step into a quiet, beautiful alley. Everywhere felt very safe (maybe with the exception of Kabuki-cho in Tokyo). Once you know certain rules (like taboos or faux pas), there's not a ton of deviation from those rules. When I did mess something up, peope were very graceful about me being a foreigner and not because I was "weird." There are helpful information kiosks, police officers, train station workers, and even kind obaasans everywhere if I got lost with something. Japan generally tends to have a very "mind your own business" culture, which is something I absolutely vibe with. I've been told I'm being antisocial for having the same mindset in the US, so this was a huge relief. Food is clean, predictable, and tasty, and while I'm an adventurous eater, I struggle with food sometimes. There are 711s everywhere in urban areas with tons of safe food (mine were onigiri and egg salad sandwiches on food-struggle days). Also, vending machines everywhere meant I didn't find myself super dehydrated, which is something I fail to recognize until I'm REALLY dehydrated. While there were a couple of instances of "oh my god, I'm about to have a meltdown," I never quite got there. These instances involved beginning to understand the train system (but now I understand it and feel confident!), and other tourists who happened to be oblivious. Other than that, my nervous system has never felt so regulated. I remembered I was autistic as soon as I was back at the airport gate with tons of other returning Americans, some of whom talked very loudly or were unfortunately inconsiderate of others around them. Anyway, again this isn't a super serious post or a deep analysis of cultural effects on autism. I just thought it was interesting (and also while I'm happy to be back in my own space, I'm a little bummed to return to a place that isn't as friendly to my autistic experience). ​ Hi everyone, I really need advice. My tutor account on Preply was suddenly blocked on Friday, March 27 (so it’s been over a week now). That morning, I woke up and found multiple bookings (around 8–9 lessons) from an account I don’t know. This person was booking lessons, sending money, then canceling and disappearing. When I opened my account, I just saw the money and a message, so I simply replied “thank you.” That’s literally the only thing I did. I had no idea who this person was or what was going on—I thought maybe they were just being generous or helping tutors. A few minutes later, I received an email saying my profile had been permanently blocked and that the decision is final. I did absolutely nothing wrong. I didn’t ask for money, I didn’t participate in anything suspicious—I only replied “thank you” to someone who sent bookings and payments. Since then, I’ve been trying to contact support: The live chat keeps closing before I reach a human Emails are not being answered (only AI responses) This situation is honestly very stressful and upsetting because this account is my work and source of income. Has anyone experienced something like this? What can I do to escalate this or get a real human response? I genuinely expected to do a slow transition. Nope. I've got students paying between $14 and $22 per hour, mostly in the middle. I'm set to break into the 25% bracket by the end of the weekend. Already got three 5* reviews. Fully booked over there. No degree. Basic TEFL. Just saying, if you can actually teach and have a decent personality, I'm shocked by how good it is. My conversion rate is 95%. Literally hid my profile today because I can't take on any more students. Should have done this a year ago. P.S. this isn't pretty privilege either.
