My terminally sick wife wants to go to the Aquarium of the Pacific one last time.
Hi All, My wife is currently in hospice, but still has a little bit of energy and mobility to get out. The AotP is one of her favorite places in the world. She has asked me if I could push her around one last time and I will, no matter what, but thought I'd reach out to a broader group with some questions. I'm looking to make it as comfortable as possible for her and realize the requests might be selfish. 1) Does anyone know if they do any requests for people in similar situations to maybe walk around before or after hours while they're setting up to avoid larger crowds? 2) This one is throwing a dart at the wall, but does anyone have a connection to maybe let her get some back stage access to some things. She really is drawn to the penguins. 3) Does anyone know of a good site or membership benefit to discounted tickets? I'll pay full price, if needed, but we likely will only be able to manage the energy for an hour, maybe two tops and finances are tight right now with all things considered. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and sorry if the questions are too selfish. Edit: Thank you to everyone, both my wife and I got emotional with all the people reaching out to help and just sharing supportive words. Many offered to cover our tickets, a Make a Wish type organization for Hospice patients reached out, but ultimately someone from the AotP reached out and I'm currently emailing with them. It's amazing how many strangers are willing to do something nice for another stranger. Edit 2: Thanks again, Madeline from AotP reached out and we were able to coordinate a time for us to visit in the next few days. I can't express enough how kind and patient she was with us. They definitely made us feel special and it seems genuine. submitted by /u/Phatferd to r/orangecounty [link] [comments]

It would be awesome to have fishing back.
I know there were not alot of people -blam!- it too well or liked it but I for one loved the fishing we got back in the day, each fish gave rewards depending on rarity and how many you deposited at one time. I'd love to have that back somehow, maybe we could get a huge aquarium put in the tower. I know this is after the final update but it'd still be cool to have, ahh good times lol.

I'm purchasing a new house and the previous owners had this huge aquarium. I love fish and aquariums, but I'm afraid this may be a little too much to maintain. Thoughts? Please tell me everything that a beginner should know about maintaining an aquarium
How do i ensure that every fish eats the food? What things should keep in mind? Ill appreciate all tips. Update - Grateful to everyone in the replies who took time to explain the basics of fish keeping. in line with all the replies, it is imperative that the fishes are given to someone who has the capacity to raise them properly. I will be finding them a good home but wont be returning them since i no longer trust the seller. Thereafter i will do some research and learning about cycling the tank before getting other aquatic pets. the measurements of the tank is as follows: Length (till the water level) x breadth x height (inches) 16 x 10 x 24 submitted by /u/WheatishKnight to r/fishkeeping [link] [comments]

My bf built this gigantic in-wall DIY aquarium and left the country the next day. I am terrified.
My boyfriend has been working on this beautiful in-wall aquarium at my home for many months. It is constructed of plywood painted with pond coat for the bottom and sides. The plywood pieces are glued together and to the frame with liquid nails. The glass is 1/2” tempered glass that he purchased from a glass table top manufacturer. The glass has tapered edges all around. He used 100% silicone to glue the tempered glass (two table tops) to the pond coated plywood and frame (top). He assures me that the silicone is not relying on the tapered down (thinner) edge of the table top, but is located in thick part. The glass has a wooden frame pressing it with deck (i think) screws and washers every 6”, visible in the picture. I am terrified that it is going to fail. Here’s why: Two days ago, he built the entire tank without the frame. We filled it to the top. We believe it is about 120 gallons. The silicone failed and all of the water rapidly fell through the silicone onto the floor. Since it was filled to the top at the time, it flooded the entire downstairs of my home, where I live alone with my child when my bf is not visiting. This happened two days before his flight back home, out of the country. I didn’t want him to rush to redo it in two days because of the obvious catastrophe that could occur (again) if mistakes were made. He did anyways, and put water in the tank. I am terrified. Should I be? What are your thoughts about this new tank? submitted by /u/Sad-Acanthisitta377 to r/Aquariums [link] [comments]

Cheat code for keeping your Aquarium clean
Just a disclaimer to say I am no expert, but I've been keeping aquariums for over 30 years, and I have spent a lot of money on fish, plants, chemicals, hardware, and learned a lot along the way. I see so many people struggling with the same issues I had, trying to balance their tank, doing water changes every day and spending money unnecessarily on powerful expensive lights, special substrates, fertilizers, water testing kits etc - this hobby has become so overly complicated. I don't test my water any more, I don't run CO2, I rarely use any fertiliser or do water changes, the tank just maintains it's self for the most part - how it should be! Anyway... There is one thing in particular I have learned which has been a huge game changer for me, and while it is no big secret, it doesn't seem to be common knowledge yet, and I really think it will help people out and make this hobby easier to get into. The key to creating a successful aquarium is... A LOT of plants And the easiest way to achieve this (especially for beginners) is by using both emersed and submersed plants. Plants pay a big part in keeping your tank clean. Algae forms when there are excess nutrients (waste) in your tank, but with a large number of plants, they absorb all of this and leave no extra nutrients for algae to grow. This is why the cleanest tanks are typically ones with the most plants, and the ones with all the algae issues have a very small number of plants. Typically, submersed (underwater) plants do not grow very fast because there is a very limited availability of CO2 in water, especially in your tap water. This is why people use CO2 injection, but this is expensive, dangerous for fish, and creates a lot of maintenance which most people do not have the time for. Emersed (above water) plants have an unlimited supply of CO2 in the air and require a lot less light. This means they can grow much faster, more growth means they absorb more nutrients, and no excess nutrients means no algae. However, not all emersed plants are suitable. Only ones which can survive with their roots permanently underwater will work. Some will rot and die after a few weeks or months. I haven't experimented much, so I don't have a long list of plants you can use, but I can tell you that regular house plants found in most stores like Peace Lillie's, Monstera and Pothos work really well, you just need to find a good way to plant them in your tank. The best way I've found is by using zip mesh bags filled with gravel, stacked on top of each other just below the water level with the plants placed between the bags to hold them in place. The reason I use gravel and not soil is because the plants get quite big and heavy, soil will not really hold them as well. Also, plants do not need to be placed directly into soil, their roots will absorb nutrients from the water until they eventually grow down into the soil substrate. Anyway, I hope that helps some people out there, here's a breakdown of all the things I've used: Tank (Amazon, 80x40x30): £60 Light (Desk lamp - Amazon): £60 Substrate (garden soil capped with silver sand): £40 Zip Mesh bags (Amazon): £20 External filter: £40 External heater: £30 Plants: £50 Fish (30 x Cardinal Tetra): £40 submitted by /u/jaeger555 to r/Aquascape [link] [comments]
