Hi. Recent X-rays showed arthritis in both wrists and right shoulder. Constant limp until gabapentin increased to 2 at breakfast, 2 at 3:30, and 1 at bed. Kate also takes atenolol 12.5 bid. Of course, this means she runs more. Vet recommended laser therapy (preferred) or acupuncture. I’m wondering about supplements , such as glucosamine or chondroitin. Medications that Kate can take are limited by heart disease. 10-09-2023 echo showed: “Severe pulmonic stenosis type A (PV PGmax 77 mmHg, TR PGmax 92 mmHg) with moderate right atrial dilation and moderate mixed hypertrophy of the right ventricle. Static tricuspid valve dysplasia. Overall static to mildly progressive when compared to the prior echocardiographic study in July 2023” Will email primary Vet on Monday, just curious if other options exist. Sorry for the long post. If you have the patience, please read and help us out. I posted most of this in the psoriatic arthritis subreddit and got a ton of advice but since my partner's pain is almost entirely psoriasis-based, I wanted to cross-post here and see if y'all have any additional advice. I've gotten a bunch of suggestions like prednisone, steroid creams, anti-fungal stuff, hot/cold packs, and various OTC options like petroleum jelly, lidocaine, and diaper rash cream. Both of these subreddits have been so helpful. I joined to learn more about what my partner is experiencing (they're not great about sharing what they're going through) and to find possible remedies for them. They're having the worst psoriasis flare up of their life and it's gotten to a point that I'm looking for ANYTHING that will help them. They just took their first dose of Tremfya three days ago (FINALLY). They were on Humira for several years but couldn't get a re-up on their Rx for a year and half or so before this first Tremfya dose. This past year has been STRESS CITY. They're diagnosed bipolar and the effects this is having on their brain are very noticeable. Their memory is trash and they often don't understand what I say. They also haven't been able to sleep well and have had crazy gastrointestinal issues and terrible acid reflux for months so it's all compounding. They've had lesions on their legs and scaling on their scalp and butt crack/genitals for a while, but in the last month or so they've gotten spots all over their back and hips, smaller ones on their legs, but in the last few days they've developed inverse psoriasis on their testicles. They were already in agony before but this inverse thing has taken it to another level. They moan from the pain all day and night. They're in tremendous pain all the time. I've found a ton of great information on this and the psoriatic arthritis subreddits but we really need some immediate pain relief like yesterday. We're seeing our GP today and luckily our (now second) dermatologist has been able to get them on Tremfya but we're at breaking points. Asking for personal experiences, not expert knowledge. History: significant arthritis, including in spine. Had unsuccessful cervical and slightly successful lumbar surgery. Presently have thoracic fractures which make breathing and walking painful at times, for days, and prevent sleep. On bisphosphonates to improve bone density for years. Try to avoid opioids, knowing that they are addictive and that they have limted effectiveness. They also cause severe gastric distress and already only weigh 60Kg (132 lbs). While opioids help and rescribed tapentadol SR and IR, and oxy, try to only use it when literally immobilised, in a foetal position and want to die (not being melodramatic) as some of you may also experience. NSAIDS don't work and have prednisone which worsens bone density, and causes serious depression. I can get some relief from double dosing with acetaminophen osteo (SR)(Tylenol/Panadol) - 2660 mg about 4 x per day. This is 3 - 4 times the recommended maximum dose. I've been using this for 5 years, have regular blood tests including for liver and kidney function, and so far so good. However, my many doctors freak out every time I complete their obligatory forms. They all direct me to stop and to start taking opoids. Text books indicate that over 12g/day is the threashold for toxicity and while I'm close, I don't get to that level. What's your experience with analgesics and in particular acetaminophen? I reached for ibuprofen this morning without thinking. Then it hit me - that reflex of "pain means relief is coming" is maybe 70 years old at most. I keep picturing a 45-year-old medieval stonemason whose spine has been grinding itself apart for two decades. No anti-inflammatories. No physical therapy. Just the same body, the same pain, every morning until the day he doesn't wake up. So what actually happened? Did communities give suffering people lighter work? Did herbal remedies do more than we credit? Did people genuinely habituate to pain levels that would hospitalize a modern person? Or did chronic pain just quietly kill people faster - through sleeplessness and stress and inability to eat - and we miss it in the historical record because it left no visible cause of death. My pain management doctor dropped me in November. They called me up for a random pee test and pill count. I was out of town, as it was literally the day after Thanksgiving!? I had NEVER asked for early refills, NEVER abused them and always passed their urine tests. Went to a new pain doctor, who refused to treat me because of the last doc dropping me. I now have a black mark against me. Neurosurgeon says I am not bad enough for surgery. I have degenerative disc disease, 4 bulging discs and impingement. I am dealing with CONSTANT legs tingling and severe restless legs/nerves type pain. I can't hardly sleep at night. I am up and down, pacing most nights. I have done 2 nerve ablations, as well as 16 weeks of PT, and so many steroids and injections over the last 16 months. I also have rheumatoid arthritis, and Chronic migraines that are worsening. My primary care doc won't even prescribe me gabapentin or pregablin for the legs. MJ is legal with a medical card in my state. BUT, if you get your card, you are banned from any pain management clinics. At this point, I looked at the Delta stuff that's legal without a card, and the hemp derived edibles, but am afraid it'll not work and I will have wasted money, or I will have some weird reaction to it. Hi everyone. I really need some reassurance or perspective because I’m struggling badly. I lost my 20-year-old cat this week. Other than arthritis for the last two years of her life (which was managed with medication), she was never sick. She barely ever needed the vet until recently. I came back from holiday about 3 weeks ago and noticed she looked thinner. I took her to the vet the next day. Bloods showed fairly advanced kidney disease (creatinine was 400). The vet said we could try to manage it with a renal diet, adjusting medication, etc. I knew she was old, but I genuinely didn’t expect things to move so fast. Then, just over two weeks after diagnosis, this past Sunday she became extremely lethargic, stopped eating, and lost the use of her back legs. I took her to the vet Monday and Tuesday for subcutaneous fluids, anti-sickness injections, and pain relief. Nothing improved so yesterday, when I took her back, I made the decision to let her go. The vet said the only other option was to take her to the hospital for IV fluids, but that it might only buy a small amount of time before we were in the same position again. I didn’t want to put her through more stress and hospitalisation if it was only delaying the inevitable. But now I’m spiralling. Why was it so rapid? Did I miss something? Should I have done the IV? What if she wanted to stay? What if I gave up too soon? I can’t cope with the guilt and the quiet in the house. It’s just me at home during the day and it’s unbearable without her. If anyone has been through late-stage kidney failure with their cat, or had to make a similar decision, I’d really appreciate hearing from you. I just need to know if I did the right thing. Hey guys, my 8 year old bun has began showing signs of arthritis, around when it started getting colder outside. We had an appointment yesterday and the vet checked him over and said he looked super good for 8, and her assistant even was shocked when I told her he was 8 lol! She felt around and said he definitely showed signs of pain in his hips, so she prescribed Meloxicam and Gabapentin. She said the Meloxicam was better for faster pain relief (but comes with longterm risk of liver/kidney issues), while Gabapentin takes longer to build. She said I can give him them both alongside each other. I’ve only gave him the Meloxicam so far. Anyway, I wanted to ask how many more years pain medication allowed you to have with your old arthritic babies? He is my actual child, I have had him since he was a wee baby, I seriously am not ready to say goodbye anytime soon. since I FINALLY gave in and accepted that I will never be "normal" again, I've decided to allow myself to buy things for myself to ease my symptoms. Here's what I use to survive on a daily basis w treatment resistant RA: (my most affected joints are hands, fingers, elbows, wrists, ankles, toes) ⭐Icy Hot Lidocaine & Menthol Patches (I prefer the Walmart brand ones, Equate, the adhesive is stronger and lasts longer) The menthol makes it cold wherever you put the patch and the lidocaine numbs the area enough to ALMOST feel pain free in the affected area ⭐Purple Restore mattress. Pricey, but entirely worth the money. The only reason I can sleep at night is because it's firm, but not hard and contours to your body. ⭐ Prescription Naproxen 500mg. It's SO much cheaper to pay for the higher dose prescription instead of taking 4-6 200mg a day that you can buy OTC. Naproxen is the only non steroid, non opioid medication that helps me significantly ⭐XL heating pad. Obviously lol ⭐Heated gloves. Let me tell you a little bit about my baby girl. She was sassy AF, she ran my house, my dogs, us, her partner cat (who crossed over 2 years ago) and was the best big sister to 2 kittens we got in December. Last april she suffered a stroke. She had total paralysis of the right side of her body- as well as right sided visual and hearing impairment. She was not supposed to survive but everyday she recovered. She regained use of her front and back leg and adjusted to life with some blindness. The only thing that lingered was hyperesthesia - so if you petted her or brushed against her right side she got a little overstimulated and would growl. And obviously some daily maintainable medications (blood pressure, plavix) She lived a super quality life until early April, I had gone away for a long weekend and my husband was left to give her, her medication and feed her. He called me a day or so in to tell me she was not eating. I told him to give her whatever she would eat and we would take her to the vet Monday. She had hyperthyroid, I had assumed her numbers were still a bit high (which we were working on adjusting over 2 months) which was resulting weight loss. Our vet did an exam and did bloodwork and found some dental infection - because of her age we opted out of surgery and did antibiotics. She began to eat again… really well… especially by the end of the week. But, Cali grew weaker, she was losing weight, she was getting more irritated/growly…We thought because she had lost muscle from not eating , her arthritis was giving her some issues - we started Adequan…. The next day I found her in her litterbox, eating mouthfuls, something wasn’t right. When I went to give her, her medication and clean her mouth out , her gums were white. She was anemic. We went to our friend, who was also our longtime vet to get a second opinion. She immediately found the baseball sized mass in her abdomen. I called my husband and we immediately made her appointment to go to the bridge the next afternoon. We did not want her to suffer at all. We did not want her to have pain. We did not want her to stop eating. We did not want the mass to take every part of her life from her before making the decision… By that night, she could barely make it a few steps, she was exhausted, she was in pain, she couldn’t hold her head up. We made her last night and day one we all enjoyed and will hold memories close. She was a SPOILT girl. And I’m so glad we got to do these things together before her journey. I feel guilty because, while I’m so sad she is gone and I miss her so dearly. I am not grieving her in the way I thought I would. Hi everyone. This is a bit of a long story but I’m hoping someone can help me. I’m a 30 year old with cerebral palsy, and in January I started having symptoms that we couldn’t place. After switching hospitals and getting set up with multiple doctors, it was determined that I have a dysplasia’d right hip with arthritis in that hip. It was the uncontrolled arthritis pain that was causing all of my symptoms. My new orthopedic surgeon said arthritis is common in people with cerebral palsy, but here’s my problem; he works with kids mostly so was recommended to me because he would be aware of cerebral palsy and other conditions like that. I’m on Cymbalta for anxiety and even though it is in my list of medications for the hospital, this doctor and my pharmacy prescribed me first Meloxicam and then Celebrex, both of which interact with Cymbalta. I caught the mistakes and won’t take them. As such, I went looking for a solution on my own, and found a joint supplement of glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM to try that’s 4000 mg daily. My only worry is that it’s not enough and I need something else, even though I just started taking it and it’s still too soon to tell if it’s helping. But I don’t know what that could possibly be. I’m a 32 yo female and have several back issues— arthritis, several herniated discs, chronic lumbar fracture, other things. My husband and I recently stopped taking kratom after about 2 years of taking it basically daily. Since stopping (about 3 weeks ago), my pain has been through the freaking ROOF. I’ve not been making a huge deal because there are plenty of downsides to kratom, especially for my husband, that I don’t want to reintroduce but I am about to lose my freaking mind from being in pain, and it’s particularly bad at night. I was recently told that I have inflammatory polyarthritis, we still don't know what's causing it, but it's pretty painful. I have it in both my hands and wrists, and it's also starting to spread to my knees and all the way down to my feet. I also have some nerve pain in the same areas, but also my back, thighs, and upper arms. My doctor gave me a kenalog40 shot to try to help, but since he couldn't do it in each joint, it's not doing much besides making me slightly hungrier. I've tried hot baths, which slightly help the pain but cause my other symptoms to get worse. I take 800mg ibuprofen along with 400mg tylenol when the pain is at its worse, but it doesn't do much either. I use a heating pad on my feet and sometimes my back, but I have no idea how I'd use it on my hands and I only have one anyway. Ice/cold also isnt really an option because my hands and feet are already usually freezing. Original post: Hi everyone! I was vaccinated early April and nearly a month later started having a bunch of bizarre symptoms that actually seemed very similar to some of the ones described here. (I never had COVID, so please delete if this is not right for the sub) Joint pain, stiff knees, tinnitus, fatigue, headaches, neuropathy, leg/arm tingles + numbness, and throbbing in calves. Would wake up repeatedly to both arms completely fallen asleep and numb. Lifting my normal weights made my heart pound and I got lightheaded like I was going to pass out. It was like my entire pain response was amplified. It got to the point where I struggled to walk, and I'm an otherwise healthy athletic young male. I thought I was going crazy, and I knew it wasn't anxiety. I know how my anxiety manifests. These were extremely unusual and miserable symptoms that I had never experienced in my life. I'm so sorry for those of you who have been dismissed and doubted. I am lucky enough to have a good doctor who immediately believed me and said he'd seen these symptoms with some other vaccinated folks, as well as COVID long haulers. His theory was that the resulting spike protein from both the virus and the vaccine can cause some serious auto-immune body inflammation in some unlucky people, where the body becomes pissed off and attacks itself. The vaccine and virus themselves are cleared from the body pretty quickly, but the spike protein is not. Sorry if I'm not describing this completely right, but his theory made sense to me. He recommended I try some of the joint supplements that his arthritis patients usually take, since they're gentle on the body and all medically shown to reduce body inflammation, and he worried steroids might be overkill. I want to be respectful of Rule #2 so I have no idea if these would help COVID long haulers, but they resolved my symptoms within a few weeks. Could have also just been a coincidence, but my symptoms were relentless for weeks before that. Of course check with your doctor before trying anything, but these are all OTC grocery store supplements. They're not fast-acting like Advil or something. I didn’t really notice them working, I just woke up each day with less and less discomfort until one day I completely forgot about it and went for a run with zero issues. I'm back to walking 5-7 miles per day, lifting my normal weights at the gym, and playing sports. I am so grateful for this relief, and I feel obligated to share it with others. I've been chatting with a bunch of other folks who had rough vaccine side effects like me, and they've all had similar relief from these supplements. No idea if it could translate to long COVID, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since my doctor made the original comparison.
