Costco Canada West (BC, AB, SK, MB) | Weekly Price Drop Report | May 11 - 17 | 2026 Week #20
Hi Everyone, tons of new sales this week as it's the start of the new flyer. The Woozoo pedestal fan is pretty popular right now, and my local warehouse also brought in some new patio furniture. The Philips Dealbolt set has now dropped to $99.97, although many of you were skeptical about it's quality. I also saw the Shiseido Elixir Lotion & Emulsion dropped 50% down to $34.97. This was interesting because they had this at the store entrance just last week. As a quick reminder, I'll be out of town for the next couple weeks so this will be my last update until June 1st. Cheers, Week at a glance 💰 Total Savings - $4565.02 🤫 Hidden Deals - 185 🆕 New Items - 32 🔥 Clearance Items - 61 Photos taken from: Richmond, BC location 🔥 Biggest Price Drops ($) Philips Deadbolt Question: Supplements for anxiety and depression that DON'T lower blood pressure?
Hey all, It seems supplements that help anxiety and depression are plentiful, however many that I've seen that I think will be helpful for me lower blood pressure, or are to be taken with extreme caution with low blood pressure, which I struggle with. Does anyone know of safe (and legal) supplements to take that help with anxiety, depression, sleep, rumination, obsessive thoughts, etc that DON'T lower blood pressure? {Worth noting: I already take sertraline and buspar and have played around with other SSRIs with not much luck. I exercise daily and eat very healthy, though I do have obsessions around food. I get plenty of sunlight. I have no vitamin deficiencies or organ issues. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, or eat highly processed foods or non-naturally occurring sugars. I take a multi-vitamin, iron, and probiotics in case I am lacking something in my diet, though this doesn't seem to be the case. I have had issues with iron in the past but have solved this with the supplement. Blood work comes back normal.} It seems I'm doing everything "right" or as best as I can, yet I'm still such an anxious and depressed mess, which is why I've turned to looking at various supplements. -I've tried various magnesiums and they cause stomach upset for me -L-theanine- seems great... lowers blood pressure -NAC- seems great... lowers blood pressure -GABA- unclear on if it even crosses the blood brain barrier but also seems it might lower blood pressure -5 HTP- lowers blood pressure, also interacts with meds -Ashwagandha- may lower blood pressure, interacts with meds I'm a bit lost. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm not asking for medical advice but for others who have experienced something similar and what you take. Thanks so much! submitted by /u/eelzbth to r/Biohackers [link] [comments]

Testosterone, best ways to increase it and scientific evidence. Increase testosterone naturally, slow its decline with age, and support healthy anabolic hormone levels: essential for muscle strength, energy, libido, cognition, and longevity.
Testosterone is more than just a hormone. It’s the life force behind your energy, strength, focus, drive, and passion. It fuels your muscle growth, powers your workouts, sharpens your brain, and keeps your heart and bones strong. As we age, testosterone naturally starts to decline but that doesn’t mean we have to accept it. The good news? There are powerful, natural ways to boost it and keep it high, no matter your age. The best way to tell your body to make more testosterone? Lift heavy. Nothing sends a stronger anabolic signal than picking up a barbell and doing big, compound movements: think squats, deadlifts, presses. When you train hard, with intensity and focus, your body responds with a surge in testosterone. Keep it consistent, rest just enough between sets, and you’ll feel stronger, leaner, and more alive week by week. But no training program will work without sleep. Deep, uninterrupted sleep is like charging your hormonal battery. One bad night sets you back. A full week of poor sleep? Your testosterone can drop like a rock. So guard your sleep. Make your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool. Skip the screens before bed. Sleep isn’t lazy. It’s where testosterone is born. Stress is another silent killer of your T levels. When cortisol is high, testosterone drops. It’s a constant tug-of-war. That’s why managing stress with breathwork, meditation, walks in nature, or just laughing with people you love makes a real difference. You’re not just calming your mind. You’re protecting your hormones. If you’re carrying extra weight, especially around your belly, that’s another problem. Fat tissue actually converts testosterone into estrogen. Losing even 10 pounds can make a big difference. Combine resistance training with short bursts of cardio, eat clean, and try intermittent fasting. It works. Getting lean is one of the most effective ways to naturally raise your testosterone and feel younger. Nutrition matters too. Healthy fats and quality protein are the raw materials your body needs to build testosterone. Eggs, avocados, olive oil, grass-fed meat, wild salmon, these foods are fuel. Cut out the ultra-processed junk, especially seed oils and sugary snacks. And get your sunlight or supplement with vitamin D, low vitamin D means low testosterone, plain and simple. There are also some powerful, well-studied supplements that can support you. Zinc and magnesium are essential for testosterone production. Ashwagandha lowers stress and boosts testosterone and strength. Tongkat Ali and boron help free up more usable testosterone. Just don’t fall for overhyped testosterone boosters, stick to what’s proven. Beyond what you eat and how you train, you must actively defend your body against the invisible hormone hijackers hidden in our modern environment. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals like BPAs in plastic water bottles, phthalates in artificial fragrances, and parabens in everyday personal care products act as xenoestrogens. Once inside your body, they mimic estrogen, tricking your brain into shutting down your natural testosterone production and accelerating cellular aging. To protect your hormones and extend your lifespan, you need to clean up your environment. Switch to glass or stainless steel containers, use natural grooming products, and invest in a high-quality water filter. By minimizing your daily toxic load, you relieve a massive burden on your endocrine system, allowing your testosterone to thrive naturally. You also have to confront the uncomfortable truth about alcohol and metabolic health. While an occasional drink might seem harmless, regular alcohol consumption is directly toxic to the Leydig cells in your testes, the exact place where testosterone is manufactured. Furthermore, alcohol severely taxes your liver, which is the organ responsible for filtering and clearing excess estrogen from your bloodstream. When your liver is overworked, estrogen builds up, testosterone plummets, and your biological clock speeds up. Combine this with the hormonal havoc caused by chronic blood sugar spikes from refined carbohydrates, and you have a recipe for premature aging. By heavily limiting alcohol and keeping your insulin levels stable, you protect the delicate vascular network that feeds your hormonal system, ensuring you stay vibrant, sharp, and metabolically young for decades. And if you’ve done all this, tested your levels, and still come up low, there are medical options worth exploring. TRT, clomiphene, and hCG can help if your body really isn’t making enough. But start with the basics: move hard, sleep deep, eat clean, reduce stress, avoid toxins, and supplement smart. This isn’t just about testosterone. It’s about feeling alive, confident, strong, and youthful for the long haul. You don’t have to fade with age. You can rise. — Dr. Georgios Ioannou, Anti-Aging Scientist submitted by /u/GarifalliaPapa to r/immortalists [link] [comments]

Biggest Shit "Ayurveda doesn't have Side effects"
Hi I am an MBBS student from a medical college in India. I am going to address few issues about Ayurveda quackery that is one of the biggest concern right now in Indian healthcare , Please read it fully so that my efforts won't be wasted. (Scroll down if you just want to learn about Side effects of Ayurveda ) First lets start with a few basic definitions that we are going to need later in this post. Modern medicine = It is evidence based medicine that works on scientific principles and is based totally on research and trials. It is evolving continuously and it is the best way of treatment at the present time. BAMS = THESE QUACKS PRESCRIBE AYURVEDIC MEDICINE BHMS = THESE QUACKS GIVE SUGAR PILLS Since I already posted and proved why homeopathy and ayurveda are pseudoscience , if you didn't read original post please read it here https://www.reddit.com/r/india/s/Zf2aeion3k After reading comments I am convinced that around 90% of people are convinced that Homeopathy (BHMS) is indeed a PSEUDOSCIENCE. Now I agree that I cant change those 10%. Now lets move on to ayurveda and after reading comments I found a trend that almost 60 to 70% of people started talking shit about science defending ayurveda while 20% of them are saying both ayurveda and modern medicine (that you guys call allopathy) are good. Sometimes they take ayurveda sometimes modern medicine (allopathy). One of the common reasons I saw is they said ayurveda is good for minor issues and I think they are partially correct. For minor issues ayurveda can work as complementary medicine RIGHT ? Lets study another definition here Complementary medicine = Complementary medicine means treatments used along with modern medical treatment such as yoga or acupuncture used together with prescribed medicines. Now lets see what are the scientifically proven complementary medicines available under Ayurveda Yoga Meditation Pranayama breathing Balanced diet with vegetables fruits whole grains Stress reduction and good sleep routine Now biggest question CAN A MODERN MEDICINE DOCTOR prescribe it?? A BIG YES Why can a modern medicine doctor prescribe it ? Its ayurveda bro!! They can prescribe it because these things are general health practices. Why ayurveda quacks use these few Ayurveda health practices as their base to advertise their pseudoscience?? Because these practices already work for health improvement so ayurveda quacks use them to look scientific and trustworthy then they add unproven treatments to make money. Few of them commented about their INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE like my friend got healthy after taking ayurveda he didnt get healthy before by modern medicine WHYYY?? Many illnesses improve with time lifestyle change and placebo effect. Ayurveda may be taken during that natural improvement so people think it caused the cure but it actually did not. Someone said MEDICINE is very costly in India thats why most people go to these quackery medicines. I wanted to address this issue. First drugs in India are the CHEAPEST in the world https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/indian-drug-prices-among-the-cheapest-in-the-world/articleshow/72196203.cms Second Indians pay about 70% less than the global average for modern medicine https://theprint.in/health/indians-pay-70-less-than-the-global-median-to-buy-medicines-study-finds/323856/ But its STILL COSTLY and I completely agree with everyone. Now what I dont agree with here is people blame hospital staff for that costliness. I agree a few of them are indeed but mostly they are genuine because they need to pay Doctors Nurses hospital staff. They need to BUY equipment which is very very costly and mostly imported from other countries so that cost is genuine. WHAT IS THE REAL SOLUTION FOR POOR PEOPLE THEN That is where the role of government comes. Government needs to improve healthcare infrastructure and subsidize it instead of giving freebies like "LADLI BEHEN YOJNA" or "FREE ME PAISE DENA". That is very unfortunate. Someone in comments mentioned BIG PHARMA SCAMS Those who dont know about it let me give you a short explanation about it. Basically what has been happening in recent years is big pharma companies specifically in the United States are organizing clinical trials of drugs specifically in the best population. Read this article to know more about it https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4046551/ Now lets address this issue. First I completely acknowledge this issue and it is completely illegal and thats why we need urgent medical reforms including clinical trials and regulation of pharma companies. Someone said in comments they take mostly Modern medicine but only use ayurveda in minor cases because it doesnt have any side effects Lets discuss this. Ayurveda indeed has very bad side effects and can lead to damage of your organs. SIDE EFFECTS OF AYURVEDA (Before talking about side effects of Ayurveda I completely acknowledge that Modern medicine has side effects too but the problem arises when it is not acknowledged by you and the general public. Please acknowledge it and try to correct it like in modern medicine we openly talk about side effects) I dont want to state just facts here so I attached research papers justifying the side effects here Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Common side effects when taken orally may include stomach upset diarrhea vomiting nausea and headache. Rare but serious risk liver injury or liver failure especially with long term or high dose use https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-953/ashwagandha?utm_ Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy / Guduchi) There are reports of herb induced liver injury potentially leading to severe liver damage even with standard use. Risky in pregnancy breastfeeding people with chronic illness or liver disease https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinospora_cordifolia?utm_ (Read toxicology part) Triphala Overuse or high doses may cause digestive discomfort such as abdominal pain or diarrhea https://www.punarjanayurveda.com/blog/do-ayurveda-medicines-have-side-effects/?utm_ Guggul (Commiphora mukul resin) Nausea vomiting belching stomach upset loose stools headaches can occur in some people CHYAWANPRASH Possible liver stress or over stimulation of immune system with heavy or long term use suggesting even natural supplements may not be risk free https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/food-news/chyavanprash-dangers-exposed-by-hepatologist-potential-links-to-cancer-and-liver-issues/articleshow/124285980.cms?utm_ FOR COWS Urine I totally support all religious BELIEVE around it and I dont have any problem with it as I respect all religions but when it comes to using it as medicine that is where the problem arises. It carries harmful bacteria and sometimes toxic metals and has no proven medical benefit which means the risks are real and the benefit is not demonstrated https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8079447/?utm_ https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bareilly/cow-urine-unfit-for-humans-says-top-animal-research-body/articleshow/99391858.cms?utm_ Read these comments https://www.reddit.com/r/india/s/kmwHdOA1aB https://www.reddit.com/r/india/s/WRsCQFQ0zv https://www.reddit.com/r/india/s/BDody2elIy If you made it till here Thanks for reading my post and believing in Science submitted by /u/Boring_Researcher803 to r/india [link] [comments]

Advise on/Rate my stack
Saw someone post 13 supplements and peeps were predominantly "you're crazy, that's too much". My wife is currently taking 12 aday and I'm taking 10. And we both just stopped Magnesium to see if it has any affect. We maybe take a lot of pills instead of a multi vitamin but I'm right at that level so I thought I'd ask for input. Any of these not good sense for a 48yoM and a 52yoF? We are getting blood work soon so any advice about what markers to get tested would be greatly appreciated as I have little idea what I'm doing compared to most of you. submitted by /u/JZCrab to r/Biohackers [link] [comments]

My top 10 takeaways from Rhonda Patrick's new episode about testosterone with Derek from More Plates More Dates
What's up boys. Rhonda just released an episode with Derek from More Plates More Dates. All about testosterone. Why so many people have low levels and how to increase it, whether with supplements or TRT. My top 10 takeaways: Ok so, if you're deficient in vitamin D, magnesium, and zinc... like many people are (like half of people don't get enough magnesium and something like 70% of people are deficient in vitamin D), that lowers testosterone. Can be as much as 100 ng/mL FOR EACH one of those. This is the first place you should start if you have low T levels. Correct these deficiencies. For magnesium, the organic salt forms are best (glycinate, citrate). - timestamp If you have high levels of SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin), it's gonna lower your free testosterone levels. So testosterone travels in around in the blood bound to SHBG (and I think other things too). And the amount that's NOT bound to SHBG is available to be used (this is called "free testosterone"). So when SHBG levels are high, your free testosterone is gonna be low. - timestamp Supplementing with boron MIGHT lower SHBG (and thereby increase free testosterone). Not a lot of studies here, but worth trying. 6-12 mg per day. - timestamp Ok, so once you've corrected those nutrient deficiencies I mentioned above and want to try supplementing with something to increase testosterone, go with Tongkat Ali. It lowers SHBG levels and increases free testosterone. Try this before boron. Can increase levels as much as 100-200 ng/dL (this is a lot). - timestamp Alright, so if you've never gotten your T levels checked, you definitely should. But you have to do it first thing in the morning (like within 1-2 hours of waking up). That's when your testosterone levels are highest. Probably not worth it if you're going at like 1pm or something. Also... make sure you're hydrated beforehand (I recall something about being dehydrated causing artificially low levels). Another important reminder: Supplements that contain biotin (like your multivitamin), should be avoided before the test. To be safe, I'd probably avoid any biotin containing supplements for 24 hours beforehand. I don't quite remember the reason for this, but it was discussed. Final point - you have to test multiple times. Your results are just a snapshot in time. Make sure to test total testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG, and also LSH/FSH. LSH and FSH are important too. If LSH/FSH are high but T is low, it means your testes aren't producing enough T and you might have a varicose vein in your scrotum (something like 15% of people do). If LSH/FSH are also low, it means your pituitary gland isn't sending enough signal. - timestamp Ashwagandha - also can boost T by lowering cortisol levels. It seems like this is in Derek's list of top 5 supplements for testosterone (1-3 being vitamin D, zinc, and magnesium, 4 being tongkat ali... there just isn't much evidence for boron). 600 mg per day. Outside of testosterone, a lot of people swear by it helping sleep as it lowers cortisol. - timestamp There were some other supplements discussed (shilajit, tribulus, and fenugreek). The only one worth bothering with is shilajit. But try all those others I mentioned first. - timestamp TRT.. Ok, I'm not on TRT, so I don't really understand this as much as the rest. But it seems like this should be a last resort thing. You want to go with a delivery method that mimics the body's natural testosterone cycle (so like small injections multiple times a week is better than injecting this massive dose of testosterone once per week). Creams are also pretty good.. but just kind of inconvenient (you rub it on your scrotum? And have to do it multiple times a day). Obviously there are risks, but this is important... low testosterone levels are ALWAYS going to be worse for overall health than the risks of TRT (hair loss, acne, etc.) - timestamp Alcohol, very bad for testosterone levels. No reason to be drinking multiple times a week. - timestamp Last point. Being fat is going to lower your testosterone levels. Excess body fat increases the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. - timestamp I think most importantly, you have to get your testosterone levels measured. Don't ignore this stuff. If you have low levels, you can correct it with supplements, weight loss, etc. or TRT as a last resort. But don't ignore it. submitted by /u/biohacker045 to r/Biohackers [link] [comments]

Take a look at this list: Overall – Gaia Herbs Ashwagandha Root Liquid Phyto Capsules – With 350 mg of organic ashwagandha root extract per two-capsule dose, this supplement is pure, simple, and backed by rigorous in-house testing. Gaia is known for transparency—you can trace each product’s origin via their “Meet Your Herb” tool. There are no added adaptogens or fillers, making it a great option for those looking for straight ashwagandha support. For Energy – Herb Pharm Ashwagandha Extract – A potent liquid extract made with cane alcohol, which enhances the range of active compounds extracted from the herb. Grown and produced entirely on Herb Pharm’s regenerative Oregon farms, this dropper-based tincture is ideal for those who want to fine-tune their dosage and feel a natural energy boost. Just be aware it contains alcohol and should be diluted before use. For Sleep – New Chapter Magnesium & Ashwagandha – Combining 325 mg of magnesium with 25 mg of ashwagandha, this tablet supports relaxation, reduced stress, and better sleep. The magnesium is from seawater and bisglycinate, which are gentle and effective forms. It’s NSF-certified, vegan, and gluten-free—but the ashwagandha dose is lower than in most standalone options. submitted by /u/nivolkola to r/ConsumerAdvice [link] [comments]

Liver injuries linked to supplement use are surging, scientists warn
Over 50% of adults take daily supplements for everything from gut health to longevity — and it's killing our bodies. The supplement industry has skyrocketed in popularity, with millions turning to pills and powders. However, a growing body of research reveals a troubling downside: supplement-related liver damage is on the rise. Experts warn that certain compounds—like green tea extract, ashwagandha, and red yeast rice—can be toxic, especially when taken in high doses or mixed with other substances. Mislabeling, contamination, and unregulated manufacturing add to the risks, leaving consumers unaware of potential dangers. As a result, liver injuries linked to supplements have surged, with some cases leading to transplant lists. Despite their appeal, experts emphasize that supplements should never replace a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. While some, like folic acid for pregnancy and omega-3s for heart health, offer proven benefits, many claims lack solid evidence. Megadosing—exceeding recommended levels—can cause severe side effects, including gastrointestinal issues, high blood pressure, and even organ damage. Since the FDA does not regulate supplements as strictly as medications, it’s crucial to research trusted sources, consult healthcare professionals, and prioritize whole foods over unverified pills. In the end, true wellness comes from balanced nutrition, exercise, and mindful living—not quick-fix supplements. submitted by /u/soulpost to r/HotScienceNews [link] [comments]

I went overboard with supplements! How do I organize them?
Hi everyone, I went on a bit of a supplement-buying spree and now I have way too many. Most of them are aimed at helping me with a chronic stress problem, boosting my testosterone, and losing weight. As you can see, there are a lot of them, and I'd love your advice on how to organize the way I should take them before they expire. Basically, I want to make the most of them. I know I probably shouldn't take a pill of each one every day, so I'm asking for your advice. In addition to the photos, I'm sharing the list with you. Magnesium bisglycinate Omega 3 Fish oil Vitamin D3 MSM 1000 (Methylsulfonylmethane) Biotin B Complex Maritime pine (pycnogenol) Sleep regimen (L-theanine, 5-HTP, melatonin) Ashwagandha 7 keto (DHEA-7-one acetate) AMPK (Hesperidin, Jiaogulan extract) DHEA DIM (diindolylmethane) Tribulus (now I know it doesn't work to increase testosterone) Thyroid energy (B12, B6, Iodine, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, L-tyrosine, Withania somnifera) Oligopin (pycnogenol) (French maritime pine extract) Blood sugar health (cinnamon, chromium, and biotin) Test alpha (Thiamine, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Manganese, L-citrulline, Maca extract, Damiana extract, Muira puama extract, Fenugreek extract, Agaricus bisporus extract, Greater nettle extract, Chrysin, Diindolylmethane (DIM)) Tongkat ali extract Zinc Boron Selenium Caffeine L-Carnitine L-Arginine Berberine Dopa Mucuna (Mucuna extract, L-Dopa) https://preview.redd.it/ql4zt3umn7le1.jpg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d8003c8a6d99e21d8d604231fc05af724b2b7bf https://preview.redd.it/r7j949mqn7le1.jpg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c5dd4e27fb0e86f2f6ee667178bf212681397a9 submitted by /u/ForasteroMisterioso7 to r/Biohackers [link] [comments]

What Are Adaptogen Supplements? My Experience with Physician’s Choice Organic Ashwagandha
Hey guys! So, I’ve been hearing a lot about adaptogen supplements lately and how they can help with stress, mood, and even energy levels. Honestly, I wasn’t super familiar with adaptogens at first, so I did some digging. Turns out, adaptogens are herbs that help your body adapt to stress and balance everything out. It sounds perfect for me because, let’s be real, life has been pretty stressful lately. I decided to try Physician’s Choice Organic Ashwagandha (picked it up on Amazon because the reviews looked good). I’ve been taking it for almost a month now, and here’s what I think so far: What I Love: Stress Relief: I was a little skeptical, but I have to admit, it really does help take the edge off. I’ve noticed I feel less overwhelmed, especially during hectic days, and I’m not as quick to get anxious over small things. Mood Boost: I’ve been in a better mood overall. My patience levels are up and I feel more “balanced” mentally, if that makes sense. Natural and Clean: I’m always cautious about what I put in my body, so I love that this is organic and doesn’t have any fillers or weird ingredients. Easy to Take: They come in capsule form so it’s super convenient to pop them with my morning coffee and get on with my day. Things to Consider: Takes Time to Notice Effects: This isn’t an instant fix, so if you’re looking for something that works overnight, you might be disappointed. Capsules Are a Little Large: Not a huge deal, but if you’re not great at swallowing pills, the size might be a bit annoying. Price Adds Up: It’s not crazy expensive, but if you’re planning to use it long term, it can add up. I’m really happy with it so far. It’s not some miracle cure but it has definitely helped me manage stress and feel more balanced. If you’re thinking of trying adaptogens, I’d say this is a good one to start with submitted by /u/AutoModerator to r/NoMoreStress [link] [comments]

My Experience with Organic Ashwagandha 2,100 mg - A Real Mood Booster. [Review]
Hey everyone. I just had to share my experience with the Organic Ashwagandha 2,100 mg capsules I picked up a few weeks ago (See Price On Amazon). If you're looking for a natural way to combat stress and enhance your mood, let me tell you this might just be the solution you need. Here's what I love about it: Potent Dosage: Each serving packs a whopping 2100 mg of Ashwagandha goodness, thanks to its unique blend of organic powder and pure root extract. This potency really stood out to me, especially compared to some other supplements I've tried. Quality Ingredients: It's hard to find a supplement that's truly pure, but this one checks all the boxes. No fillers, gluten, soy, sugar, or any other nonsense just the good, pure stuff. I really appreciate that it's non-GMO too. Ayurvedic Benefits: Ashwagandha has a rich history in Ayurvedic medicine, traditionally used for stress relief and mood enhancement. It's cool to incorporate a bit of that ancient wisdom into my modern life. Easy to Take: The veggie capsules are super easy to swallow, and I love that I can take three daily with my meals. It's a straightforward routine that fits nicely into my day. A Couple of Things to Keep in Mind: Gradual Effects: For me, the effects werent instant. It took a week or so of consistent use to start feeling more balanced and less stressed. Patience is key here. Price Point: While I found it to be worth the investment, some might consider it a bit on the pricier side compared to other supplements. Overall, I'm really pleased with my experience using Organic Ashwagandha 2,100 mg. It has supported my journey to a more relaxed and happier me. If you're seeking something to help manage stress and improve your mood naturally, I absolutely recommend giving this a shot. Just remember to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement. Ashwagandha and other herbal supplements - Important factors to think about
I’m someone who’s taken a large stack of supplements for a long time, now. But I tend to stay away from herbal supplements for various reasons that I think are important. I’ll explain below, with my added experience relating to Ashwagandha. Quality, Safety and Effectiveness These are the main reasons I stay away from them. It’s very difficult to find clean, safe and effective herbal supplements. Typical supplements like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, etc, only need to worry about four main components; hygiene, purity, dosage and heavy metals. This is of course a generalisation. I’m subscribed to Consumer Lab, which is a supplement testing website. There’s a lot of supplements that aren’t ideal in this regard. It’s already a challenge to navigate what’s objectively the best with regards to supplements. Herbs are very different to vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants, etc. They’re not singular compounds, but potentially hundreds or even thousands in a capsule. They’re grown just like food, but many herbs aren’t classified as food. Regulation of these herbs is generally absent. Clean, safe and effective herbal supplements need to measure well in the above factors that I mentioned; hygiene, purity, dosage and heavy metals. But there’s also other factors that affect the cleanliness, safety and effectiveness; pesticides, herbicides, other environmental contaminants, extract dosage, etc. You don’t know where said herb was grown and how it was grown. It could’ve grown in some obscure part of a third world country, in soil full of PFAS and micro-plastics, grown with high amounts of pesticides and herbicides that are banned in your country due to health concerns. With regards to extract dosage, this can vary wildly with brand. A good example is with garlic. Many people wish to take garlic for the allicin compound within it. Consumer Labs have measured various garlic supplements. Even when two supplements contain the same amount of garlic powder, the measured allicin content was wildly different. I’m not saying everyone should stay away from herbal supplements or that they’re all unclean, unsafe or even ineffective. But I do think more care should be taken when researching them. While it’s unwise to buy random herbal supplements from unknown brands off Amazon/eBay, even some commercial brand can fall short with regards to herbal supplements. They’re more difficult to perfect. Desired Effect Unlike a vitamin, mineral, amino acid or antioxidant - herbs contain a myriad of compounds. It’s difficult to achieve the exact result you desire. For example, I recently started taking KSM-66 (extract from Ashwagandha). Even though I generally stay away from herbals supplements, I made an exception for Ashwagandha as it’s quite well researched. It’s one herb that most supplement lovers recommend. Family members have tried it and experienced overall positive effects. I found a reputable supplement website selling KSM-66 capsules. They were certified Soil Association Organic, which have the strictest organic standard on the planet. So I gave them a try. The results? I initially felt a positive effect, but within a few days I started feeling worse. The problem is that Ashwagandha can cause various changes in neurotransmitter balance. While it often increase GABA and serotonin, it can also decrease dopamine. For many people, this may not be a negative effect. But for someone like me who has ADHD and suffers from depression, I’m already “dopamine deficient”. I’m now experiencing the classic anhedonia symptoms that some people feel after taking it. I’m not saying there aren’t potential side effects with typical supplements like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, etc. But these micronutrients are what the body needs to function optimally. They’re very well researched and potential side effects are predictable. With herbs, we’re ingesting compounds that the body doesn’t need per se. It’s very easy to disrupt the balance of internal processes within the body and a lot of herbal side effects are neither predictable nor are they clinically known. TL;DR Take herbal supplements if you wish, but take extra care when researching brands and the effects/side effects of said herbs. submitted by /u/MetalingusMikeII to r/blueprint_ [link] [comments]

Organic Ashwagandha Roots
Ashwagandha, also known as Withania somnifera, is an herb that has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. It is native to India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. The root and berries of the ashwagandha plant contain a variety of active compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, and steroidal lactones called Withanolides. These compounds are thought to have a range of pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulating properties. Ashwagandha is a hardy shrub that can grow up to five feet tall. It is typically grown in arid and semi-arid regions. The plant prefers well-drained soil with a slightly alkaline pH and requires full sun to partial shade. Ashwagandha is typically propagated by seeds or cuttings. The seeds are sown in a prepared seedbed, and the seedlings are transplanted to the field after four to six weeks. Alternatively, cuttings can be taken from mature plants and planted directly in the field. The plant requires regular watering, particularly during the first few weeks after transplantation. Ashwagandha is usually harvested after six to eight months, when the roots have reached their maximum size. The roots are dug up and cleaned, and can be used fresh or dried for later use. The leaves and berries of the ashwagandha plant can also be used for medicinal purposes, and are typically harvested during the flowering season. Some of the potential benefits of Ashwagandha include: Reducing stress and anxiety: Ashwagandha is commonly used as an adaptogen, which is a substance that helps the body adapt to stress. Some studies have found that ashwagandha supplementation can reduce stress and anxiety levels, and may help improve mood. Improving cognitive function: Some research suggests that ashwagandha may have neuroprotective effects, and may help improve cognitive function in people with mild cognitive impairment. More research is needed to confirm these findings. Boosting immune function: Ashwagandha contains compounds that may have immune-modulating effects, and some studies suggest that it may help improve immune function and reduce inflammation. Improving physical performance: Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine as a tonic for improving physical strength and stamina. Some research suggests that ashwagandha supplementation may help improve physical performance, particularly in athletes. Lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels: Some studies suggest that ashwagandha may have hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic effects, and may help reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels in people with metabolic disorders. It is important to note that the scientific evidence supporting these potential benefits is mixed, and more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks of ashwagandha supplementation. As with any herbal supplement, it is also important to speak with a healthcare provider before using ashwagandha, particularly if you are taking any medications or have a medical condition. Ashwagandha can be consumed in several forms, including: Capsules and tablets: Ashwagandha supplements are available in capsule or tablet form, which can be taken orally with water. These supplements are widely available in health food stores and online. Powder: Ashwagandha powder can be mixed with water or milk to make a tea or tonic. It can also be added to smoothies or other foods. Tincture: Ashwagandha tincture is made by steeping the herb in alcohol, which extracts the active compounds. This liquid extract can be added to water or other beverages. Traditional preparations: In Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is often consumed as a decoction, which involves boiling the herb in water and drinking the resulting liquid. It can also be consumed as a milk decoction, which involves boiling ashwagandha powder in milk and adding honey or other sweeteners. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions when using ashwagandha supplements, and to speak with a healthcare provider before using ashwagandha, particularly if you are taking any medications or have a medical condition. If you are interested in trying ashwagandha, it is important to choose a high-quality, organic product to ensure that you are getting the full benefits of this powerful herb. Live Organics is a trusted supplier of organic, natural, and non-GMO ashwagandha roots and products, providing a range of options to fit your needs. Our commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing practices ensures that you can feel good about your purchase while reaping the potential benefits of this ancient herb. https://preview.redd.it/iiu0x0e4cvpa1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=30fc80c0f0610e8d75fc8c1da68eb903425b2320 https://preview.redd.it/76v7jhe4cvpa1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=69a03ea0377f02ac01cdfbbb5eea47555d005316 https://preview.redd.it/2frsgle4cvpa1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=b860e7d431cd0d7b4c98324e7e32390de25c7e47 https://preview.redd.it/oeeodwe4cvpa1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=16b98269b52dfa65876f6ea2c58c1d2139741ab5 submitted by /u/Monilparih to r/herbs [link] [comments]

NOW Supplements Ashwagandha - A cautionary tale (x-post)
I'll try to condense the first part of this and get to the important details, but a little background information is needed to tell the full story. Around May 1st, I started itching from head to toe. I thought that I was having an allergic reaction, so after it didn't subside in a few days, I went to urgent care. At this time, I hadn't noticed that I didn't have a rash, because excessive scratching had broken capillaries and I had mistaken those for hives. They were not. Urgent care gave me steroids and sent me on my way. The itch went away for a week and then returned. No rash, no hives. I went to my PCP, who said it was because my skin was too dry, told me to stop showering daily, and gave me another steroid shot. This steroid shot did not start working immediately. I stepped up my skincare game and the itch finally stopped. Until July. The itching started again. Went back to the PCP. He said that my skin wasn't too dry, maybe it's allergies. Gave me another steroid shot and told me that I needed to figure out what was causing this because I couldn't just keep coming back for steroid shots every other month. Told me to take antihistamines. I requested a complete metabolic panel at the suggestion of a friend who is also a doctor. That was a Tuesday, about three weeks ago. Test came back on Friday morning. Bilirubin, ALT, and AST were all slightly elevated. I sent my PCP a message in the portal asking for next steps. No answer. Called and left a message in the afternoon, no answer. By 5 pm, I was in so much pain. The itch was burning my skin and I had not slept at all the night before. Finally got a hold of him, he said that the test results didn't look concerning to him and to take an antihistamine. I said no antihistamine had worked. I was taking an h1 and h2 blocker. He prescribed a stronger antihistamine. (Yes, I will be finding a new PCP). Did not sleep at all that night and had my husband drive me to the ER the next morning. Total bilirubin was at 2.7 (which was what was causing the itching, normal range is 1.1), ALT was 442 (normal range is below 64), AST was 240. Ultrasound showed no bile duct obstructions and healthy gallbladder (I have a family history of gallbladder disease). I was given cholestyramine to help reduce the bilirubin and referred to a liver specialist. After convincing the Hepatologist that I was not a junkie alcoholic that traveled to exotic locations, he begin asking me other questions. Family history of liver disease - no. How much do you drink - only one drink a night with dinner on Fri, Sat, Sun. Do you take any herbal supplements? - yes. Ashwagandha, Valerian Root, 5-HTP, Turmeric. Was told to stop taking all herbal supplements immediately and begin daily blood tests. Monday's test they took 12 vials of blood, to rule out pretty much everything that could harm your liver. I was bruised for two weeks from that. The itching got better, but my ALT and AST just kept going up and up. I started researching everything that I was taking, which led me to the study that came out of Iceland earlier this year. By Friday, my liver levels were still rising, which was super frustrating, because I was doing everything that they told me to. I was also focusing on eating foods that were supposed to be good for your liver. Which was difficult, because I had absolutely no appetite. The NP said that a lot of times the enzymes will continue to go up, peak, and then start trending down. But, they were worried because my levels were still climbing and the lab was closed during the weekend. I also had zero energy, which also worried them. So, I got to go to the hospital. During COVID. Which I do know I did not have because they stuck the swab up my nose. Let me tell you, you never want to hear: 'you hopefully won't need one, but we want you to go to the hospital where we do liver transplants just in case.' They did mention that my blood results showed my liver was still functioning properly, which was hopeful. They stuck me in an MRI to rule out any obstructions that hadn't shown up on the ultrasound. I had to get my blood drawn every 12 hours to monitor my levels. Saturday, they didn't let me have any food OR WATER until 2 pm when they ruled out doing a biopsy for that day, which gave me the worst headache I've had in my life. Then they didn't get approval from the doctor to give me ibuprofen until almost 10 pm. My AST and ALT levels peaked on Saturday. ALT was 1514 and AST was 572. Every morning, I would have to wait to hear if they wanted do a biopsy that day. Luckily, Monday morning my levels had dropped enough that, not only were they not going to do the biopsy, they were sending me home. So, I was diagnosed with Drug Induced Liver Injury. The liver team said that they had seen previous cases associated with Ashwagandha, Valerian Root, and Turmeric, but didn't pinpoint any of the three as the specific cause. The resident working with the liver team said that when your liver enzyme levels get that high either they peak and trend downward or you go into liver failure. The liver doctor said that they had seen a couple of otherwise healthy people end up needing transplants from supplement use (didn't mention which specific ones) and that I should consider myself lucky. I'm home now and feeling better. I'm only allowed to take my prilosec, the liver meds they gave me, and melatonin. They won't even let me take my birth control until my levels go back to normal. Last Thursday, my bilirubin had gone down to .8 (within normal range!), AST to 90, and ALT to 500. I go back for another blood draw on Thursday. Weekly blood draws are much better than daily (or twice daily). My poor veins had so many holes in them. So, I've been going down the rabbit hole researching every little thing I'd taken the past three months. I found a form that you could submit a report to the FDA if a supplement had caused a serious issue. While filling out the form, I clicked over to Amazon to get the exact name of the Ashwagandha brand I had been taken. Then I noticed it. I purchased it on April 21. Which means it arrived around April 23. A week before the first itching event. Curious, I clicked on the reviews. Almost all of the one and two star reviews mention itching. Several also mention high liver enzymes. Dozens and dozens of reviews. This has to be the culprit. There's too much data here. I've been taking Ashwagandha for a couple years now, but it had been the first time that I had bought the NOW Supplements brand. In the past I had used Organic India, Swanson, and even Spring Valley without issue. My doctor has advised me to no longer take Ashwagandha. Which sucks because it did a great job at calming down my ADHD brain so that I could sleep. But, I thought would be prudent to warn others. You do not want to experience this itch. Trust me. TL;DR - Lots of words to say that I ended up in the hospital with Drug Induced Liver Injury. Evidence points to NOW Supplements brand Ashwagandha as the cause. submitted by /u/skinonfirethrowaway to r/Supplements [link] [comments]
