I use a reusable swim diaper and washable wet bags. Bring two bags each with 1 swim diaper and swim suit. I change them at the pool since the swim diaper doesn’t hold anything. Went to a lovely family wedding last week. Bride and groom have a gorgeous baby- he’s the happiest baby I’ve ever seen. He was wearing little white trousers, a white shirt and a blue jacket to match his dad’s suit. The jacket was probably not that comfortable for a baby and they took it off after the ceremony and photos, so he was then in white. There was a guest there (plus one) bitching about him being in white and how it was inappropriate. Didn’t matter that the bride had picked the outfit. That was her not really getting it apparently. I didn’t hear about this until later or I would have said something to her. Im so annoyed. The couple are so nice and I hope they don’t find out about because I worry they’d be hurt. Clearly a baby isn’t going to be mistaken for the bride and did he take attention from her? Well maybe because he’s so smiley and cute, not because he wore the white clothes. About 15 years ago I owned a small children's clothing consignment store. I washed and ironed clothes of needed. Baby clothes often had food stains so I searched for ideas to clean the tough stains. I came across a suggestion to soak light colored clothes in powdered dishwasher detergent (not the lemon scented). It worked. After getting educated by this sub and doing some cross referencing on dishwasher powders I realize why. It was protease, amaylese and lipase in the dishwasher powder that removed the various baby food stains. Those powders need to work on all kinds of food stains on dishes and work best with hot water, which dishwashers require for sanitation. Expecting my first little one in early April 2026. I live in a climate where it can still be quite cool and rainy that time of year. This will also be my first ever experience with babies so I feel totally clueless! Through research I have figured out some of the basic things I would need are sleepsuits/onesies, body suits, burp clothes and bibs. But the quantity, style and size has left me unsure of everything. I have watched buying guide videos that suggest you can get away with just 3 or 4 of each thing and then do laundry every other day. I know my laundry loads will increase for this little human but I also don't really want to be doing laundry everyday! I would much rather have "too much" and be able to get away with doing less loads of laundry. Am I the only one? But even sleep suits I don't really understand. Does baby wear more than one a day? Does baby just wear a diaper underneath or a bodysuit (I guess this also depends on the temperature)? If they don't have footies, what about baby's feet? Are babies warm enough just in a sleepsuit at night or do they need a sleep sack? Maybe I completely am overestimating the bodily fluids of a baby but could you not potentially have to do several outfit changes a day and night? I am planning to go very basic and functional and not as interested in having fashionable real outfits at first. I am also planning on buying used since I know baby will grow quickly and am looking to save money. But how many is too many? Or is it all at personal discretion of whether I want to be excessive. Why are baby clothes so expensive for things they wear for like… 3 weeks? I’ve been browsing online, and it’s wild how a single romper can cost the same as an adult hoodie. I get that baby stuff needs to be comfy and safe, but I also can’t justify spending that much on something they’ll outgrow in a heartbeat. So I have an eight month old. So far, the total amount of money we've spent on this kid is maybe a grand, and that's mostly nappies. We were the last of our social circles to have a baby and so we've been the recipients of all the stuff. Clothes, furniture, clothes toys, breast pumps (we had two to choose from) more clothes, did I mention clothes? We got baby clothes from three different lines of hand-me-downs. My son's clothes previously belonged to his cousins on both sides and also a whole lot from friends. Babies grow fast. They don't wear out their clothes. An outfit that's been through six cousins already will look either new or have some slight stains but be perfectly good. An acquaintance is pregnant and was lamenting the cost of baby clothes, so naturally I offered to supply her. And then she sent me her preferred brands. Mostly Ralph Lauren, I kid you not. I told her we have one (1) Polo Ralph Lauren onesie and full disclosure the baby HATED it. (Sad times for him, maybe he shouldn't have peed on the laundry pile so it was almost all we had left.) (Advice to new parents of boys: no matter how far you think they can reach, they can go a bit farther than that. Baby boys shoot like Steph Curry.) Anyway, she proceeded to be outraged and offended that I planned to give her USED baby clothes. She was trying to place an order for DESIGNER baby clothes. And as a result, we are returning to our own original plan for the baby clothes, which is to give them to a domestic violence shelter. She can't even have the one Ralph Lauren onesie we do have. Her argument: you could afford it! My argument: a significant part of why I'm not broke is that I don't waste my money on stupid things like designer baby clothes. We bought none of these but if I had been buying it the Ralph Lauren onesie would never have been considered. (The Peter Rabbit dungarees might have tempted me.) Hey 👋🏻! A few months ago my girlfriend mentioned that her mom had gotten her all of her baby clothes for almost free. Turns out, because babies grow so fast, their clothes are donated all the time to Goodwill Bins! Go to Goodwill Outlets/Bins with gloves and a trash bag, and you can FILL YOUR CART with barely-used baby clothes, and pay no more than $45!!!! I have enough clothes to last through the first two years lol… literally $1000 worth of baby clothes (and swaddles, bows, bibs, etc.) for $45. I took my expecting friend to do the same, and she scored! Baby clothes are literally THE WOOOORRRRSSSTTTT. First off, so many people buy you like. Super cute but also NICE outfits in very tiny baby sizes. Like I’m all for having one or two nice outfits for photos or special occasions but when baby is that little, your big outings are going to the pediatrician’s office. Also babies love to poop and spit up on themselves. If your baby is EVER constipated, a guaranteed remedy is putting them in a super cute outfit and going somewhere without a change of clothes (for both you and them) or the diaper bag. If they’re REALLLLYYY backed up, you might want to consider forgetting both to guarantee a blowout. Works like a charm. Then there’s the outfits that come with a regular shirt rather than a onesie for smaller/less mobile babies. Regular shirts suck on young babies. They’re constantly riding up as you’re carrying baby or picking them up or putting them down. Granted at some point a switch flips and onesies become annoying and regular shirts are better. I don’t know exactly when that switch happened but my twins are 16 months old and I hate onesies. And sizing. In case nobody’s told you/you haven’t seen it in another Reddit post yet - clothes that say “3-6 month” and “3 month” are THE SAME SIZE. I had way too many outfits that were never worn before I learned this. Also there’s no guarantee that your baby will fit the sizes in that match their age so it’s better to go by the size chart that lists lengths and weights EXCEPT they can vary slightly from brand to brand and your Great Aunt Edna doesn’t know your baby’s measurements but she does know that your baby will be nine months old at Christmas and she’s gonna mail you a bunch of nine month onesies. Also your baby’s growth slows down at some point (like. drastically.) so the pants that my dumbass bought on clearance at the end of last winter and intended to use for this fall are STILL too big for my kids. They’re still able to fit in about 75% of their pants from last spring. Speaking of nine months. The 6-9 month size is A SCAM. I swear. My kids outgrew 6-9 month stuff in like. Two weeks. So I checked the size charts and for MOST SIZES the height range is like three inches except for 6-9 month where it’s 1.5 inches. And then your little baby suddenly is outgrowing 9 month clothing and you need 12 month except it’s in a different part of the store which is heartbreaking. You’d never think crossing an aisle would cause you so much emotional turmoil. Also Old Navy doesn’t have a 9-12 month size, they go from 6-9 month to 12-18 month. So a special eff you to Old Navy. Now let’s talk about baby pajamas. I know some people are “Team Snap” vs. “Team Zip” but we can all agree that changing your baby’s diaper without having to fully disrobe them is the preferred method. After 12 months, that option disappears. The zippers only go one way. The timing of this perfectly coincides with diaper changes turning into alligator wrestling matches. AND now the pajamas are “snug fit” because the looser fit style is apparently a fire hazard…like what the heck is happening at 12 months? Do people start putting their babies to sleep next to open flames? Is there some toddler rite of passage I wasn’t informed about?? So on top of the zipper going only one way, you ALSO have to squeeze your baby into sausage casing. I really think the Venn diagram of people who design baby clothes and people who have babies are two completely different circles. And last but not least. At some point your baby may no longer be the same size on top as they are on the bottom. This is not abnormal. How many of you wear a different size top than bottom? However. Baby clothes come in adorable, pre-matched sets so our sleep deprived brains don’t have to expend mental energy on making sure our kids’ clothes match. Also people love buying these cute sets as gifts. My mom is still mad my kids haven’t worn the shorts from an outfit set she got them for their birthday. They’re huge. Still. Four months later. But they’ve worn the shirt weekly since a few weeks after their birthday. I could probably go on even more about the selection of boys’ clothes vs. girls’ clothes, how hard it is to find plain, simple clothing, the challenges of finding two of something in the same size, and shoes BUT I don’t want to turn this already too-long post into a dissertation. Plus I’m sure some other parents have PLENTY to say about these topics. EDIT: Sorry, messed up the whole X-Y size is whatever size. Now I'm remembering - before they were born, I had sorted their clothes into 0-3, 3 month, 3-6, 6 month because I knew nothing and then got super pissed when stuff didn't fit. English is not my first language and I am in mobile, so please be patient with me. They told me in r/amitheasshole you guys would like this November last year I(30f) gave birth to our first baby. It's the first in my family and the 6th in my husband family(32m). It's important to say that all the six kids are boys and MIL is in some sick baby girl rabies. Ever since we made the announcement MIL convinced herself that I was pregnant with a girl. I told her that once we knew the gender she would be the first one to know. We told her it was a boy, she still was convinced it was a girl. She told they whole side of the family it was a girl. I corrected but she told them I was just annoyed bc I wanted a boy first (I wanted a healthy baby, I didn't have a damn about the sex). She also told them we are naming the girl after her mom, which we will never do bc hubby hates his Grandma. When the baby shower gifts started to come I noticed a lot of things that wasn't in the register. Embroidered things with grandma's name. And it didn't matter we told them the gender and the name, and make clear we are not lying about the gender. Everyone believed her Well, the baby was born. And imagine the surprise... It was a boy, just LIKE WE HAVE BEEN TELLING EVERYONE. The problem (for them) was that now the baby have plenty of "girly" clothes, pink onesies etc, and we are dressing our baby with them. Specially for his family video calls and for pictures for them. After Saturday call, MIL called us to scream to us bc we are making the elders uncomfortable for not sticking to a masculine color scheme for the baby clothes. And we have to stop being this childish, she just through my belly shape was more like girl them for a boy. We told her we will not change the baby's clothes, and to just await until the dresses fit.
