Friends Cat Tears Up Brand New Shoes
Been watching a cat for a friend for a few months now, wake up this morning to my new pair of doc martens torn to shreds at the toes. Been polishing and taking great care of these since I got them a month or so ago. I usually put them up on a rack but forgot last night, definitely paid for my stupidity. $200 basically trashed right there. Half of it was a birthday present from my girlfriend and neither of us make enough right now to just buy a new pair of boots, we can barely make rent. Real bummer way to start my day. EDIT: I am NOT throwing the boots away over this like some think. When I said trashed I just meant the look, i had just woken up and worded it poorly. AIO for snapping at my friend for calling my shoes (and me) trashy?
My friend works in finance, and his office throws the team a celebration lunch at a nice restaurant when they have an exceptionally good “quarter” or whatever. Dates are allowed, and he said he was tired of being one of the only people to go alone every time. So, he asked if I would be his +1 this time. The dress code was business casual. I wore a loose, white, button down shirt, grey slacks, and 2-inch, leopard print heels. He saw my shoes and said they were tacky. When I asked how, he replied that only “certain women” wear leopard/cheetah print. I questioned him further about what kind of women. He said the kind that wear print styles. I pushed him until he finally admitted he meant trashy women. For context, I’m also Latina. I don’t have proof because he didn’t explicitly say it, but his tone and the way he kept dancing around the questions felt really racially loaded. He’s probably referring to the “chonga” stereotype racists imagine when referring to “trashy” hispanic women. I got mad and told him that I was doing him a favor, and that he needs to shut up before I get so angry I make us both look bad because I’ll either be upset the whole time or just not go to the lunch. I need at least one pair of decent, comfortable shoes that can cross over between office wear in NYC/Boston architect and engineering offices and climbing ladders, catwalk, roofs, etc. Must be a rubber outsole, bonus points for non-slip. I’ve been searching Reddit and Google and all that, and most things I see are “don’t buy xxxxxx brand shoes! They’re poorly made!” Florsheim, Johnston and Murphy, Cole Haan, rockport, etc etc all have videos saying “these are the worse shoes ever!” Cmon. I can’t have a cobbler make me bespoke shoes for $1000, and not every one of these brands can be terrible.
