Swampy hot hell south Texas is in full force. I work a job that has me drive and travel in and out of patient homes. I don’t like wearing anything too heavy because of the patients. Current routine is clinical strength dove deodorant, further society Floating Forest, Ajmal Raindrops, then this strong Off bug spray that I hate so much but it’s what my company provides. What do y’all use as bug repellant. First timer backpacking and I’m not a big fan of bug spray. I live in the south and plan to backpack in the summer. It’s hot and humid. For people who've done serious mosquito territory camping, what combination actually kept you sane? I'm close enough to an irrigation canal that I can't sit on my patio for more than a minute without being bit. I don't want to spray deet on myself every time I want to go outside, so hoping there are other methods that are almost as good. Been living in my van for over a year and pest management is something you figure out real fast or you regret it. I'm parked in a lot of different environments, desert, forest, coastal, and each one brings different bugs. Here's what I keep on hand at all times. A spray bottle with diluted peppermint oil. I spray this around the door seals, around the bed platform legs, and along any cracks in the floor. It keeps ants out surprisingly well. I also keep bugmd concentrate as a backup for when the peppermint mix isn't cutting it. Citronella candle. I burn one outside during the evening when I have the doors open cooking. Doesn't eliminate mosquitoes but reduces them enough that I'm not getting eaten alive. A small handheld vacuum. Not exactly a repellent but crumbs attract bugs and a clean van is the single best pest prevention there is. I vacuum every 2 days minimum. Steel wool plugs for any gaps I find. Mice will try to get into a van parked in rural areas especially in cooler weather. I check the underside periodically and stuff steel wool into any openings I find. Peppermint pouches (like the rodent repellent kind) in the engine bay during winter months. Mice love chewing van wiring and a $30 repair can turn into $3000 if they get the main harness. The biggest thing I've learned is prevention beats treatment every time. I keep seeing recommendations for peppermint based sprays as a natural bug deterrent and I'm genuinely curious whether anyone has had real measurable results with these or if it's just placebo. For context I'm dealing with ants getting into my kitchen through a gap under the sliding door and spiders in the basement. I've used raid in the past and it works but my wife is pregnant and we'd rather avoid harsh chemicals right now. I bought a peppermint concentrate spray from bugmd and I've been spraying around the sliding door track and basement window frames every 5 days or so. The ants have reduced noticeably near the sliding door but I can't tell if that's because of the spray or because I also sealed the gap with weatherstripping at the same time. The spiders in the basement I honestly can't tell any difference. Still seeing them regularly. Has anyone done a proper before/after with peppermint based sprays where you can confidently say it made a difference? As the title says, I Fd up. I was on the last step after spending weeks sanding & painting multiple coats... Admiring my own work I picked up the sealant spray all proud of myself. Forgot I had a bug repellent candle next to me until I sprayed and Bowser went up in flames 😶 This is my desperate attempt to try find somebody who would kindly be able to print a Bowser for me so that I can replace it without my kid brother knowing. (It's his printer at my parents house so I can't even sneakily print one without him knowing!). I will of course pay for it if anyone can help? Hi! This might not be the right place to ask - but I'm wondering what your tried and tested brands of bug spray are. I've just moved to Canada from the UK, and every time I go outside I'm being eaten alive by (assuming) mosquitos and after being here two month I'm already on a dose of antibiotics for a tick bite haha. I'm convinced the bug population of Canada is trying to kill me.. Do you guys have anything that repels both ticks and mosquitos? I've seen a few things online but I'm really not sure of what to go for - especially looking for something that is possibly water proof? With ample coverage of the bedbug plague in Paris and word of it spreading out to other countries, a lot of people are saying that it is only a matter of time before it arrives in London (and if Rentokills statistics are anything to go by, it's already begun over here). Having personally heard of a few recent cases of Londoners getting bedbugs after staying in student accomodation, AirBnB's or cheap hotels like Travelodge, I thought it might be handy to do a thread on bedbug signs to look out for and how to avoid them. Size: Adult bedbugs are typically 5-7mm long (which is about the same size as an apple seed) but start off life only 1mm long, which is the same size as their small, white eggs. Appearance: Bedbugs change in both size, shape and colour not just over the course of their lives but also depending on whether they had fed recently, a while ago or a very long time ago. Signs of bedbugs: Gaps: Bedbugs are primarily nocturnal animals and during the day they will retreat into tiny cracks and crevices (which is where they also lay their eggs in), living in colonies, meaning that you don't typically see them scuttling around during the day. Favourite bedbug hiding spots often include seams in mattresses (classic example: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/af/0a/46/af0a46df679d7b121ecaca7053997ff1.jpg ), in-between the joins in bedframes or other furniture and inside splits or holes in wood (classic example: https://u2y4v6x2.rocketcdn.me/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Can-Bed-Bugs-Live-In-Wood-Furniture.jpg ). Patches: Bedbugs diet of blood causes their faeces to stain soft & hard furnishings with small black or dark brown splotches. When a full-blown bedbug infestation is in swing you will often smell either a strange musty berry-like sweet smell emanating from the room, a smell of coriander or an acrid almond-like smell (they can also make rooms smell like old bed linen in general). Skins: Bedbugs repeatedly shed their old skins as they grow larger and develop into adults. Blood: Bedbugs typically only feed on people at night while they are asleep and then retreat before sunrise. Other signs of infestation: Fumigation chemical smells: We are experiencing bedbug problems because years of laws that reduced the arsenal of highly toxic (but also highly effective) pesticide chemicals meant that over time bedbug treatments became less effective and as bedbugs began to survive treatments, they evolved greater resistance to chemicals. This also means that if a place has been recently fumigated it might not be bedbug-free yet (in fact sometimes places are taking up to 2-3 treatments before they are completely free). Although Sulfuryl Fluoride (the main ingredient in fumigation chemicals) is odorless, Chloropicrin (which smells sweet and is very acrid & harsh to inhale) is added to fumigation mixes to help warn people from entering places that have been recently fumigated. If you suspect that you smell any lingering fumigation smells or see a place being fumigated, it is wise to avoid the whole site as treatments are not always proving effective against bedbug infestations. How bedbugs transmit: Luggage: Unlike headlice or bodylice, bedbugs do not live on people's bodies. Instead, the most common way they get from one place to another is by hiding in the seams or gaps in or on people's luggage. Clothing: Bedbugs can also hide inbetween stacks of clothing inside people's luggage. So, to round up, your plan of action when staying anywhere unfamiliar should be: Smell: Before you put your luggage down, smell the room: Does it smell like coriander, chemicals, old bed linen, musty raspberries or acrid almonds? If so, there could be bedbugs. Mattress: Check the mattress by lifting up the bed sheets and checking along the seams of the mattress for signs of bedbugs and their distinctive faecal patches. Bedrame: Check the bedframe by looking along the joins of the bedframe, behind the headboard and inside any cracks or splits in the wood for signs of bedbugs and their distinctive faecal patches. Luggage: Keep your luggage closed at night and ideally opt for hard-cased luggage bags over soft luggage bags. Clothes: Keep your clothes inside of re-sealable plastic bags. Torch: Pack a small flashlight in your luggage to make checking your room for bedbugs easier. Floor: Don't store your luggage on a carpeted floor, instead opt to store it on a smooth, flat raised surface. Checks: Before you leave your stay, take your luggage into the bathroom (where it is bright & light), shake it out in the bath or shower area and inspect things like the pockets & straps to make sure that no critters have hitched a ride. If you have access to a vacuum hoover, give the luggage a quick going over before you take it with you. Ineffective: Over-the-counter insect repellant sprays and insect killer sprays like Raid are all ineffective in strength against bedbugs and so inadvisable to spray on your luggage, self or clothes, which will unnecessarily expose you to toxic chemicals. Home: Once you get home, keep all your holiday clothes sealed in bags until they have all been washed & laundered with detergents and vacuum hoover the luggage cases. Scents: Bedbugs are reported to not like the smells emitted by natural lavendar, citris fruits, cinnamon & mint, so some people believe that if you make your luggage smell of these scents then it might help to deter bedbugs from hitching a ride on it. If you suspect even the slightest bit that your room might have bedbugs in it, inform the manager straightaway and demand a new room; a hotel has absolutely no right to force you to sleep in or pay for any rooms which have bedbugs in them. I happen to live in a swampy area with lots of standing water so advice would be appreciated. Bed bugs have a reputation of being difficult to deal with, but a lot of that stems from common misinformation you will find online, and also because many products sold to kill them simply don't work. For example, some people say to use ultra sonic pest repellents, bed bugs don't have ears. They have also largely developed immunity to the chemicals used in sprays and foggers. In fact, University of Rutgers Entomologist Dr. Wang, considered an expert on the topic of bed bugs, predicts 100% of bed bugs will be immune to them within 10 years. So what actually works? The good news is there are still a couple methods that work very well, and the better news is that you don't have to spend much to get them. For the bed bugs you can't see, Diatomaceous Earth. Diatomaceous Earth is inexpensive, and is composed of silica. Silica will stick to bed bugs and draw moisture out of their bodies, dehydrating them to death. It also has the added benefit of transferring from one bed bug to another on contact, meaning when they walk back to their hidey-hole, it will transfer to bed bugs that might not have needed to leave to feed for a few weeks, and kill them as well. And since it dehydrates them, they will never develop an immunity to it. And with Diatomaceous Earth, a little goes a long, long way. When applying it in their foot path, a light dusting is all that is needed. Making piles of it only encourages them to find other ways of getting to where they want to be. For the bed bugs you can see, heat. 122 degrees Fahrenheit, or 50 degrees Celsius. Once they are exposed to that temperature, they die immediately. So a simple steamer can kill all the bed bugs that have found hiding spots that are more easily accessible, such as on the mattress or in the bed frame. And like D.E., heat is also something that they will never become immune to. These two methods of eradication aren't going to be a single application process. The Diatomaceous Earth in this experiment had a 90% mortality rate at 10 days, so it may require a few weeks. It will also benefit greatly by being paired with a rigorous cleaning regimen, such as more frequent sheet washing in hot water, and dried on the hot setting, as well as frequent sweeping and vacuuming(and don't forget to empty the bag immediately after). So while it will involve some work, the alternatives can be costly, which can include companies that come to your home to make the entire interior reach temperatures that kill the bed bugs, and cost thousands of dollars to do so. What is the evidence these methods work?
