Litter box smell is going to end my relationship
UPDATE- thanks everyone for the support and cat related advice! We will be switching out their wet food and I’ll update after some time passes. We’re currently using Boxie Pro litter but will switch to tofu if it doesn’t do the trick and keep you all posted! — Seriously- my boyfriend and I moved in together four months ago, and he’s extremely sensitive to smells. He has one cat whose litter box doesn’t seem to smell, but the smell from the one my two use is unbearable for him and it’s been a major issue. We have a very small house and don’t have a place for another box Their last vet checkup was 4.5 months ago and they had no issues We scoop anywhere between 1-3 times a day We have stainless steel covered litter boxes with charcoal filters We run air purifiers 24/7 next to the box, open windows when we can, and have a fan running to increase airflow We’ve tried Arm and Hammer clump and seal, world’s best poop fighter, odour buster, and boxiecat pro litters We’ve switched foods, they get Purina one indoor advantage and a small amount of Friskies wet food (with extra water mixed in) every day, as well as Purina Fortiflora cat probiotics to try to stop the smell at the source We bought Whisko plugins that are supposed to help- they didn’t I clean the boxes, litter mats, and surrounding area with Natures Miracle about once a week We scoop into airtight bags- the smell is coming from the box, not the bags. Honestly open to any suggestions, even if they sound crazy. I’m 99% certain my girl wont use pellet litter so that isn’t an option. Why do architects forget that pets exist? Dealing with the "litter box in the laundry room" fail.
I’m currently mid-renovation on my guest bath/laundry combo and the layout is a nightmare. I have exactly 24 inches of clearance under the vanity, and I refuse to have a plastic eyesore sitting in the middle of the hallway. I’ve spent way too long looking for a litter box for small space integration that doesn't require me to saw a hole in my custom cabinetry. Most "furniture" options are made of cheap MDF that swells the second it gets damp. I’ve shifted my search toward finding a high-performance litter box for small space that actually has a vertical footprint instead of horizontal. It’s wild that we talk about smart fridges and hidden pantries but "where to put the cat" is always an afterthought in home design. Has anyone successfully built a dedicated nook for a modern unit, or am I better off just sacrificing the bottom of my linen closet? submitted by /u/8Nakul to r/HomeImprovement [link] [comments]

How to completely get rid of litter box smell!
As someone with three cats, my house always seemed to smell like a litter box no matter what I tried. I attempted different placements, added extra litter boxes, tested multiple litters, but nothing would work. I finally decided to try an automatic litter box, and honestly, it made a much bigger difference than I expected. The smell is noticeably better, and maintenance is way easier compared to daily scooping (sometimes twice a day). Now I mostly just empty the waste drawer. I’m using the PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin litter box, but this reviews quite a few other good options out there. If you want no more litter box smell, it might be worth considering! submitted by /u/ChadxSam to r/Catownerhacks [link] [comments]

Accidentally solved a year-long litter box problem in one weekend (sharing in case it helps someone)
I wanted to share this because I’ve learned more about my cat in one weekend than I did in an entire year, and I wish I’d understood this sooner. To set the scene, I have 5 indoor cats. My whole house is cat oriented. We have cat shelves and perches on the walls. Lots of toys, cat trees, fountains. The whole thing. My Lucky cat has struggled with litter box issues for a long time. Specifically, Lucky would poop outside the box every other day or so, even though the boxes were clean, there were plenty of them, they were in a private area, same litter, and he’s been vet checked. On top of that, whenever we had visitors, he would pee on things like bags, baby gear, or near doors. It always felt intentional in the sense that he wanted us to notice. He’d often do it in very visible spots or in areas where we were nearby, which made it feel even more stressful and confusing. I was honestly starting to feel like I was running out of options and was scared that eventually it would come down to rehoming him or making him an outside cat, which absolutely broke my heart. This weekend we had houseguests, including a baby, and based on past visits I was really worried about stress accidents. To try to prevent that, I set up a calm “reset space” for him in our attached garage. This wasn’t meant as punishment. He’s been in the garage before and is comfortable there. I put his favorite XL litter box, his favorite bed, toys, food, and water out there. What surprised me was how clearly he communicated once he had that option. He would come inside when things were calm, but when he started to feel overwhelmed, he would walk to the garage door and meow to be let out. He even slept out there by choice. At one point he headed toward one of his usual stress spots near the back door, and when I said his name, he immediately redirected himself to the garage door instead. And the biggest thing: no accidents. No pooping outside the box. No stress peeing when visitors were around. That is huge for us, because the pooping outside the box had been happening consistently for a long time. It finally clicked that this was never really about dirty boxes or not enough boxes. It was about stress, shared scent, and lack of control. Inside, the other cats mostly use a litter robot, which he hates. I suspect it’s because it’s enclosed, mechanical, and smells like everyone. Even though his box was in a private closet area, it was still a communal bathroom. The garage box smells like him. It’s quiet. No robot noises. No one sneaking up on him. We’re keeping the garage as his permanent reset zone now. I’m also adding an open-top self-cleaning litter box inside as a backup, after letting him try it in the garage first so it smells familiar. I even started gentle harness training just for enrichment and confidence building, but I’m watching out for his stress cues to avoid over doing it. I feel relieved in a way I didn’t realize I needed. I went from feeling like I was failing him to realizing I just hadn’t found the right environmental setup yet. Sharing this in case anyone else is stuck in a doom loop of litter box issues. I think giving Lucky choice, privacy, and a way to escape is what made it all click. submitted by /u/b-randy90 to r/cats [link] [comments]

Is there a cat litter that doesn't... suck?
Looking for some litter advice. I have a 9 year old bengal that i got when he was 3. Pretty easygoing cat. Top entry litter box. Here's the litter history: First 4 years I used Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal. It was fine; dusty, laborious, and a bit smelly but manageable as a person looking to save a buck. Next 2 years I move to Pretty Litter. It was pretty solid; smell wasn't an issue, didn't have to do anything more then once a month other than scoop the poop. Big downside was how bad it tracked, even with the top entry box. Past year I switched over to Tuft & Paw. Lived up to the hype about no tracking. Yet it smelled, like really bad. And not the 'standard' cat litter smell, somehow considerably worse. Not to mention slowly having to add/replace litter over the course of a month. Should have listened to the reviews. I just want something that: Doesn't track Doesn't smell Is dustfree I don't have to replace/add-to more than once a month Also... Price is not an issue, I don't care about the composition of the litter, and I am not open to a litterbox robot. Where do I go from here? submitted by /u/catintheroom to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

What are good automatic litter boxes (other than the litter robot)?
I would like to purchase an automatic litter box that isn’t a litter robot due to the insane price. Budget is around $300. I see several options on Amazon but I’m not sure if any of the options are any good. The main reason is odor control. I’d ideally like an automatic litter box that has good odor control. Does anyone have any self-cleaning litter boxes they’ve purchased where it’s been a positive experience? Just wanted to share this little thing I got recently — a cat litter mat that actually works 😭
It’s waterproof and traps the litter really well, so I don’t have to sweep around the box every single day. Honestly didn’t expect it to make cleaning this much easier. Totally worth it if you’ve got messy cats like mine 😂(No need to go for big brands — just grab one that’s reasonably priced, it’ll do the job. (Just my personal opinion, no offense to anyone!)) submitted by /u/stradamant to r/Catownerhacks [link] [comments]

Is this normal? Kittens who were introduced about a month ago sharing the same litter box at the same time??
I thoughts cats don’t go to the bathroom together at the same time? And yes, they were both using it. Little one peeing and older one taking a poo. Little one started first. They don’t have problems using litter boxes (I have 3) and they use any one they like without a problem. I have noticed however whenever one uses the box the other one runs towards it and watches closely? submitted by /u/Fit-Alps1373 to r/CatTraining [link] [comments]

AIO: Guy I’m seeing peed in my cats litter box
Hello everyone, I’m in quite the situation. I had been seeing this guy for about 2ish weeks. Things were going incredibly well, it felt like he was checking all the boxes. Felt very comfortable around him, etc. About the 5th time seeing him, we spent nearly the whole day together and were walking back to my apartment. I expressed I had to pee, so once we got into my apartment, I went straight to the bathroom. He went into my bedroom to wait. I was in there for maybe 2 minutes max, and I walk into my room. That’s where I saw him zipping up his fly — standing over my cats litter box. I shouted, “what are you doing??” And he said he has to use the bathroom really bad. So I told him it’s open. I walked over to my cats litter box, and saw the entire thing filled with urine. Splashed up on the sides and everything. Like, it was certainly not my cat’s urine. He was in the bathroom for quite some time. When he walked back into my room, I told him he needed to clean it. He had obviously never cleaned a cat box before — which, is fine. He doesn’t have pets. So, I took over and ended up cleaning it myself. He explained that night before he left that he was sorry, and that he just really had to go. Also that he wasn’t sure why he did it. The next day, I texted him and expressed that I didn’t want to see him anymore as this was all just too uncomfortable for me. He sent a very long apology, showing regret and that he really wants to keep seeing me as he feels things were going so well. He also told me that he has booked a urologist appointment to figure out what’s going on. Some things to keep in mind: no, he was not drunk. He had, I think 3 or 4 white claws the whole day and is extremely tall. I’m meeting up with him soon to discuss the situation and to hear what he has to say, as he wanted to express some things to me in person. TL;DR Guy I’m seeing urinated in my cats litter box, sober. AIO for not wanting to give him another chance? UPDATE: After reading through many comments, I decided it’s probably best I don’t meet with him. There’s been valid points for either option of meeting / not meeting with him, but I feel there’s nothing he can “explain” to make me want to stick around! Also, guys this is not fake or AI 😭 it is a crazy situation though lol. Also, my cat has been doing fine — I bought a new litter box :) submitted by /u/lilybuggin45 to r/AmIOverreacting [link] [comments]

Let's talk self cleaning litter boxes.
Do you use one? Or ever had one? How long did it last? How many cars used it? Was the cost justified? Pros and cons? I see the cost of them has been going down, matter of fact Amazon had a flash sale and I picked this big boy up for $219. Haven't completely set it up yet but I'll report back when I do . submitted by /u/kmarz77 to r/Catownerhacks [link] [comments]

I got my cat a little kitten so that he wouldn’t be alone and it fixed his litter issues!
My boyfriend and I found Scrunch (RIGHT) almost two years ago. He was a stray but he was extremely friendly with us and he came to live with us in our apartment. He is the sweetest cat, we took him to get his shots, and got him neutered, and he is always are sweet and lovable good boy. The only issue we had was his litter habits. He HATES litter. He hates the feeling of litter in his paws. We tried all kinds, we tried different spots, we asked the vet if anything we could do. But nothing worked. He always avoided the litter and used either our bathroom sink or our bathtub for using the bathroom. The only thing that remotely worked was putting a pee pad inside the litter box and putting the litter in top, but sometimes he would still just use the sink or the bare tub. It was stressing us out, but he is our cat nonetheless and we weren’t going to give up on him. Around April of this year, we decided to get a kitten because we knew that scrunch was alone for most of the day in our apartment due to our long work schedules and he was very sad. His mood quickly changed for the better, as he became more energetic and happy again. The kitten’s name is Dexter (LEFT), and scrunch basically adopted him like a son, he grooms him regularly, teaches him how to play, and he’s even adopting some of scrunch’s quirky mannerisms that make him such a funny cat. Dexter, however, knows how to use the litter box at just two months old, and he uses it without fail! We thought, maybe scrunch can learn from him. We weren’t really expecting anything since Scrunch had never used the litter box consistently in the ENTIRE TIME we had him. To our surprise, we see scrunch more interested in sniffing around the litter box and peeing and pooping next to the litter box because he sees Dexter using the litter boxes a lot. Still frustrating, but a step in the right direction. I because optimistic, I got a litter mat to catch the litter around the box, and but both litter boxes on the mat. I moved the litter boxes to an area that was easier to access for him. Then, one day, he pooped I. The litter box. He didn’t bury it though because, again, he hates the feeling of litter in his paws. But then Dexter came in and bury Scrunch’s poop for him. This is the third day where scrunch has consistently popped in the litter. He still occasionally pee’s in the bathtub, which is an easy wash anyways. It would be preferable if he did both in the litter, but him pooping in the litter has been such a massive improvement. I’ve been keeping the litter cleaned every day to so that he can always have fresh litter to use, but I am so happy that we made progress in this issue because it has been stressing us out. I thought I would post this here to sprinkle a little good news, and maybe it could work for someone who is having similar issues. Thanks! submitted by /u/The_KJV_Corner to r/cats [link] [comments]

Are stainless steel litter boxes really the move?
I have 3 cats and 3 litter boxes. I have those big plastic litter boxes that look like giant plants. I love them. But they absolutely harbor smell and need to get scrubbed frequently. We’re moving and I’m getting them new stuff for their litter because I’m not packing these with me. Are stainless steel ones really worth the hype? Also, lid or no lid? I love how cute the plant ones are but it’s time for a change I think. TIA submitted by /u/astro-amphibian-00 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

My boyfriend pissed in the litter box.
It is currently 2am where I am at. I woke up to my boyfriend walking into his office and then heard him using the bathroom. I thought, “I’m just really tired. There’s no fucking way. He totally went in the bathroom and I’m just really tired.” Well, I got out of bed to check because something didn’t sound right and sure as hell enough, he was pissing in our cat’s litter box. In the fucking litter box. Alcohol is wild. I’m going to drop his ass off at the humane society tomorrow. Wish me luck. submitted by /u/Jxnebxby to r/mildlyinfuriating [link] [comments]

Where would you keep your cat litter?
We’re moving from a larger home to this above apartment and I am lost on where we would keep the 2 cat litter boxes. Previously we’ve kept them in a separate laundry area. submitted by /u/scoliogirl to r/cats [link] [comments]

Litter box advice from a professional cat behavior consultant.
I’m scrolling through Reddit tonight and seeing a lot of litter box posts, so here are my quick tips if you’re struggling with litter box issues. TAKE THE CAT TO THE VET. I don’t care if you “think it’s behavioral.” This is always, always, always the first step. Where are your boxes located? Are they in a dark corner of the basement? Would you buy a 3-story house where the only bathroom was in the basement? Of course not. You should have one per floor, in a private but not isolated spot. Multiple cats? Issues between cats? Multiple options, spread out is key to allow the cats to have boxes away from each other. How many boxes do you have? You should have one box per cat, plus at least one extra. Two boxes placed next to each other counts as one box, sorry. Spread those boxes out!! No clumping of resources. How often do you clean the box? Scoop once a day, minimum, and fully dump the litter and scrub the box with soap and water at least twice a month. What’s in the box? Unscented, clumping clay litter is what MOST cats prefer. Stay away from pellets or crystals. They can be sharp or unpleasant on cat paws. Depth should be 2-3 inches in general. What size is the box? It needs to be big enough that your cat can turn in a complete circle without touching any walls. Most commercially made litter boxes are too small. Bigger is better, people. Covered or uncovered? There are exceptions to every rule, but if you don’t like pooping in a port-a-potty, why would your cat? Covered boxes are statistically cleaned less (out of sight out of mind) and retain stink inside. They’re also almost always too small. If your cat is peeing/pooping right next to the box, it’s probably a problem with the box. If your cat has one preferred pee spot not near the box, it’s probably location. If your cat is peeing on your bed, laundry, or couch, it’s probably stress. If your cat is peeing everywhere, it’s probably medical. If your cat is peeing vertically (spraying) on walls, doors, and windows, it’s probably territorial marking. Also, there are many cat behavior professionals out there (myself included) that handle litter box cases virtually. You can hire them! Many people still do not realize this resource exists. This has been litter box 101. Thanks for coming to my talk. submitted by /u/laurahas7cats to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]
