UPDATE- thanks everyone for the support and cat related advice! We will be switching out their wet food and I’ll update after some time passes. We’re currently using Boxie Pro litter but will switch to tofu if it doesn’t do the trick and keep you all posted! — Seriously- my boyfriend and I moved in together four months ago, and he’s extremely sensitive to smells. He has one cat whose litter box doesn’t seem to smell, but the smell from the one my two use is unbearable for him and it’s been a major issue. We have a very small house and don’t have a place for another box Their last vet checkup was 4.5 months ago and they had no issues We scoop anywhere between 1-3 times a day We have stainless steel covered litter boxes with charcoal filters We run air purifiers 24/7 next to the box, open windows when we can, and have a fan running to increase airflow We’ve tried Arm and Hammer clump and seal, world’s best poop fighter, odour buster, and boxiecat pro litters We’ve switched foods, they get Purina one indoor advantage and a small amount of Friskies wet food (with extra water mixed in) every day, as well as Purina Fortiflora cat probiotics to try to stop the smell at the source We bought Whisko plugins that are supposed to help- they didn’t I clean the boxes, litter mats, and surrounding area with Natures Miracle about once a week We scoop into airtight bags- the smell is coming from the box, not the bags. My cat has been peeing around the house, mostly on my couch and in my son’s play room. We have already seen a vet and they did blood and urine tests and said she’s perfectly healthy and it’s a behavioral issue. She’s 7, so not quite a senior. I did everything they said, replaced all three of her litter boxes with stainless steel to eliminate smell, put several Feliway sprayers around the house, and even changed her diet. She has not touched her new litter boxes either. Still peeing on and possibly inside the couch. I just found pee and poop all over my son’s backpack. We have a baby on the way and I’m starting to wonder if surrendering her is the best option for my family but it makes me feel like a monster because I’ve had her since she was a kitten and she’s my best friend. If anyone has any ideas on how to help us. I have another appointment with the vet scheduled but unfortunately they can’t see us for another week and I’m hoping someone can help until then. First, this is not a fix for all situations. Just another suggestion that has saved my sanity. Litter box with paper towels. That’s it. That simple of a solution. I have an adorable tortie named Milo, who peed on dog beds, blankets & piles of clothes. I took her to the vet multiple times. She’s healthy as can be besides her spicy tortitude. She didn’t pee on the couches or our beds, just what I mentioned above. I tried Feliway diffusers & collars. I swapped out various types of litters. Bought all sorts of litters boxes. Moved litter boxes close to where she was peeing (beside dog beds). Put out way more boxes than recommended for 3 cats. Her brother & sister, no problems. My tortie….unphased & would randomly pee on the beds & clothes left on ground (not clean & folded). To me, all advice given did not seem to fit. She had no issues with the dogs & they love her. Litter box are all block with baby gates to keep dogs out. She pooped in the boxes but never pees. Then one day, Milo comes outside with me, which I let her do on occasions & she pops a squat in the middle of the grass. No digging, no burying it. Just pee & go like a dog would do. So it dawned on me that she doesn’t like litter at all. Got one of my spare cheap open top litter boxes & lined it with layers of paper towels. Rest is history & we are all happy campers. I have doggie poop bags that I use to get dirty towels out twice a day & reline. I buy the cheapest towels for her box. She never tries to cover it, just climbs in & does her business then moves on. I only have the one & she’s good with it. She’s the only one who uses it because her brother & sister are normal cats who want to cover it up. Down side, it smells. Nothing to absorb the smell but I will take it compared to how we were living before. As soon as I see she’s gone, it’s getting cleaned. So, not a big deal. Now I think I will get a stainless steel box for her. I think it would be a better option for cleanliness. I’ve also learned she doesn’t like strong cleansing smells. She’s my extremely odd one. 😁 Again, this won’t fix all situations but it may help someone out there. If this simple trick does not help, take your kitty to the vet for a health inspection. We have 4 cats. We have 4 litter boxes. They are all in our mud room due to a lack of space. I know you are supposed to have 5, so maybe that’s the problem? I’ve noticed that they favor the one plastic box we have, the other 3 are stainless steel. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it either. The litter is all the same, we scoop them the same frequency, and I even tried switching the boxes around to see if it was a location thing, they still prefer that plastic box. Right now I'm using plastic high sided litter boxes for my 2 11yo cats and they have to be replaced about every 6 months because they absorb odors which then stink up the house even though the box is cleaned out every time I change the litter. I use the wood pellets so while I can scoop the poop right away the pellets dissolve into sawdust when they get wet with urine which then goes to the bottom right next to the plastic which does absorb odor unfortunately. So pellets while extremely cheap are nothing like clumping cat litter that let you just quickly remove the urine. Regular cat litter sets off my asthma and my cats refuse to use it since they've used the pellets their entire lives. Last night I discovered stainless steel litter boxes and I'm wondering are they worth the cost? Do they actually last for years and not absorb odors? My cats usually live till around age 20 before passing so I have quite a few years to go with the current set and I'm on a fixed income so I'm always trying to cut cost where I can. I have been considering making a switch to stainless steel litter box solely for the reason that there will be less bacteria compared to a plastic box. Lots of people say it also helps with smell, but I use wood litter which I find doesn't smell at all so that's not a priority for me. I'm wondering if it's really worth it because a lot of stainless steel litter boxes I see have plastic walls that you can attach which I would need because my cats pee high. i’ve been using the tidy cats 24/7 litter for years in plastic litter boxes (5 cats) with absolutely no complaints. over the last few months, i have noticed the quality has gone down significantly. it doesn’t clump at all, to the point where i was convinced i bought the non clumping formula. every time i scoop, the “clumps” disintegrate and give off a horrible smell. the formula also has sooooo much dust that when i pour fresh litter, i find litter dust on other surfaces in my house and so much on the walls where my boxes are. i am desperate for any recommendations for a good litter that has tight clumps, low/no dust and UNSCENTED. i’ll be switching to stainless steel boxes as well. i appreciate any suggestions! submitted by /u/saddcl0wnn to r/Catownerhacks [link] [comments]

I have been wanting to switch to a sifting litter box because me and my cats have a strong preference for wood pellet litter. Since I was making a new purchase I wanted to make the change from plastic to stainless steel. Unfortunately stainless steel sifting litter boxes are SO expensive ($100+ with mediocre reviews) and there weren't a lot of models available near me. I researched some DIY options and almost just gave up and went with a plastic PeeWee. But I couldn't stomach the price tag for another plastic box that would end up smelling. -->I took a risk and got two stainless steel hotel food trays, the same size but different depths so they could nest and allow a chamber for the disintegrated pellets to fall into. Its working PERFECTLY, the holes are the right size, the walls are a great height for my cats that like to dig, and the dimensions accommodate my 12 llb cats just fine. Im leaving it open for now while they get used to it, the smell is neutral, and I can easily create a bin cover when i want to. Highlyy recommend this hack.. I’ve got 3 chaos goblins (2 boys, 1 girl) and I’m LOSING the litter war. I’m scooping twice a day, still getting mystery pee clumps stuck to the corners, and my apartment smells like “lightly used” clay no matter what I do. Hi everyone, I’m feeling really overwhelmed and I don’t know what else to do. My cat Prince is a 16-year-old, male, red point, neutered, strictly indoor, and he has weighed 4 kg (about 8.8 lbs) consistently for the last 5 years. During the last week, whenever he’s awake, he actively looks for me and asks me to follow him. This behavior can last up to 3 hours, but I don’t understand where he wants to go or if he needs something specific. I first took him to a veterinarian who said nothing was wrong. Then another vet came to my home and told me that Prince was dehydrated and needed an extra litter box. The vet also recommended water fountains and ceramic/stainless-steel bowls, which I placed in all five rooms of my apartment. Despite this, he doesn’t touch the water at all. He only eats Royal Canin Gastrointestinal wet food, about 1 and a half pouches per day. If I add water to the food, he refuses to eat it. His sleep schedule is roughly 14 hours a day: from 4 AM to 11 AM, and from 8 PM to 2 AM, plus a few naps during the day. He has toys and we also have structured play sessions. He plays actively for about 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times per day, without seeming tired or exhausted. This year, he lost his two companions, two poodles he had lived with since birth. I don’t know if this is related, but I feel like he wants something I can’t give him, and it’s breaking my heart. I feel desperate. The only thing that reduces his meowing during these long walks is singing to him the entire time. What could this be? What else can I do to help him? Petsmart is charging like 13$ for 14 lbs (you can also buy a 40 lbs bag there for $20) and 20 lbs of tidy cats costs 12 bucks. But you can have EIGHTY lbs for 14 bucks! So i got it. I use a stainless steel sifting box. Its great. No smell, minimal tracking, no more inhaling clay dust! The pellets absorb more too. The only way they’re worse is if cat has the runs. We have a ragdoll kitten and everyone in the house is completely in love with him. He’s the best cat I’ve ever had, and grew up with lots of cats, same as my husband, but neither of us has ever had a ragdoll before. The difference being, though, that all the cats we had as children and young adults were all outdoor cats - no cat litter. We have a covered, stainless steel litter box. I scoop three times a day. I hoover around it once a day. I dump the whole thing out once a week (which makes it expensive). But it still stinks when I walk in the house sometimes. I have a really sensitive sense of smell and I can’t stand it. The cleaning is fine - although not ideal. I am a neat freak anyway, but the smell surprising me is not something I want to put up with longterm. But what do I do? My husband thinks we should let him be an outdoor cat (put in a cat flap) as we have a large garden that it’s hard for him to jump the fence of (he hasn’t yet - we let him potter about when we’re also out there), and that we should provide a soil pile that he can poop on that we regularly maintain. But I’m worried about him eventually jumping the fence. If you also have a very sensitive sense of smell and couldn’t stand a regular litter box situation, what did you do??? My husband and I have two cats, and we are at our wits' end with our litter box situation. We previously had a Leo's Loo (competitor to the Litter Robot), and we overall it was good (~$650, no smell / only required emptying 1-2x per week) but it broke down within 2 years of use. We got a cheaper (~$150) self-cleaning litter box 3 months ago, and it's completely broken down now, too. Note that our 2 cats are happy sharing a litter box and transitions have been pretty easy (I know the recommendation is 3 for 2 cats, but we've had multiple litter boxes out before and they just use the same one). We are in search of a new litter box solution. Some wants: (1) some sort of self-emptying component, even if not automatic, that ideally requires scooping 1-2x/week rather than daily and (2) limited odors. We are considering switching to the Breeze system (Purina system with pellets), or perhaps a stainless steel dupe, but at this point I would love to hear from people who love their litter box solution, since we've been burned twice! Hey everyone. Wold's Best is far and away the most popular cat litter recommended here. I gave it a shot and I think its awful. Tracks all over the house, and starts to stink very quickly. I clean the box 1-2 times a day and the area around my cat box tends to get stinky a few days after a full litter refresh. Im looking for recommendations for litter for low tracking and low stank. I currently have an open stainless steel litterbox. We have previously used Tidy Cat Breeze and liked the system, but I hate the environmental impact of constantly buying the pee pads. I work in the room the cat box is in because we have a shotgun style house and its the only isolated room other than the bedroom, so scent control is important to me. For several years I ran the world's largest cat-only adoption org and sanctuary. We had, at various times, up to 400 cats on-site, and as you can imagine, that's a LOT of poop. There are tons of problems with most "traditional" litter pans you get at petsmart or petco. Because they are made of plastic, they can get a bit hard to clean, they can crack or break easily, and worst: they absorb smells like no one's business. This smell thing goes both ways by the way. They can just lock in urine and feces smells; but if you wash them with soapy water, that same plastic can lock in the chemical soap smell. You may THINK you've rinsed it away, but your cat can DEFINITELY smell it. So what did we use? stainless steel steam pans from restaurant supply stores. Here's one of mine at my house: http://imgur.com/Iq5YxrJ Basically what makes them awesome is they are solid as heck, the clean extraordinarily easily; they carry zero "smell" residue, they last absolutely forever, and, at about 20 bucks, they actually cost about the same as the cheap plastic ones you'd find at petsmart. Here's an amazon link to one We actually would use the four-inch deep ones at the shelter, but for home use, the six inch ones seemed appropriate. Oh, and if you have an especially messy cat where you think it's necessary to get a covered litter pan; keep in mind that if the smell is bad to you, it' really really bad to your kitty. One thing to consider is getting a 14 gallon recycling bin. Though not impossible, it's a LOT harder for you kitty to fling poop out of one of these, but they are also not being hotboxed with a heavy ammonia smell either (though the same caveats I mentioned before about cleaning them still apply). And final thought on cat litter boxes; remember; if you have multiple cats, always try to have at least one more litter box than cats. This reduces weird territorial issues.
