Why is Cat Water Fountain trending?

1
Encourages Hydration
Cats are often reluctant to drink stagnant water, and may not drink enough to stay properly hydrated. A cat water fountain provides a constant flow of fresh water, which can encourage cats to drink more and stay hydrated.
2
Improves Water Quality
A cat water fountain typically includes a filtration system that removes impurities and debris from the water, improving its quality and taste. This can be especially beneficial for cats with sensitive stomachs or urinary tract issues.
3
Reduces Risk of Health Issues
Dehydration can lead to a variety of health issues in cats, including urinary tract problems, kidney disease, and constipation. By encouraging cats to drink more water, a cat water fountain can help reduce the risk of these health issues.
4
Entertains and Stimulates Cats
Many cats are fascinated by the movement and sound of flowing water, and may be more likely to drink from a cat water fountain than a traditional water bowl. This can provide entertainment and stimulation for cats, especially those who spend a lot of time indoors.
5
Convenient and Easy to Maintain
A cat water fountain is typically easy to set up and maintain, with many models featuring dishwasher-safe components. This can make it a convenient and hassle-free option for cat owners looking to provide their pets with fresh, clean water.

Is getting a cat water fountain worth it?
I’ve recently (3 months ago) adopted an older cat (8yr old female tortie) and she will drink from her water bowl but she always like digs in front of it before she attempts to drink from it. She also prefers drinking from the bowl right after I fill it up. Kitty cat also seems to prefer drinking the water off the shower floor over her bowl (she will cry if the shower floor is dry). I guess I’m just wondering if my kitty would want a cat fountain over a bowl/shower? I have done basic research as in I know that most cats prefer flowing water etc. but my past cat I had didn’t care if that the water was stagnant. I am just a bit hesitant to get a fountain as they are a bit of money and I don’t want to buy one and then she doesn’t use it. Can anyone help me understand why my cat does this to the water fountain?
This is not a serious issue so apologies if it is not allowed. Ever since we got the fountain he has done this weird thing with his paw and I don’t understand why? He sometimes will try to open the lid as well. My best guess is thinks something is inside? But he doesn’t do it to anything else, for example if there’s a box or drawer he wanted to get into he wouldn’t do this. (Also sorry for the mess in the video- he does this randomly so hard to get a video of it!) submitted by /u/tupsybee to r/CATHELP [link] [comments]

I don't know if Apollo is actually drinking "more" yet as he's only had it a day, but so far he only drinks from it using his paw. Is that good? 😅 submitted by /u/Tilas to r/cats [link] [comments]

Word of caution about water fountains
I have a dog who is getting old, and want to keep his kidneys in good health. He loves to drink running water out of a faucet, so I looked into pet drinking water fountains. I looked deep into it, as pets have very few regulations to protect them. I also lost a male cat years ago to crystals in his urine, who also loved to drink from the faucet. My first realization in my search is these fountains are heavily marketed to cat people. For good reason given my cat died from not drinking enough water. I narrowed my search and looked at cat fountains too. Food grade stainless steel was critical since it is very safe. Having a pump that did not sit in water was also critical. This was important to not only prevent accidental electrocution, but to keep any plastic pump chemicals from leaching into the water. I found a cat water fountain that seemed to fit my criteria very well, but like every single pet fountain on the market, it is made in China. I emailed the USA component of the company. "It's all safe and meets FDA standard" I was initially told. I knew FDA does not regulate pet drinking water bowls, but ordered it anyway. I really wanted a fountain because I love my dog. This one was close to everything I wanted. When it arrived, it looked pretty good. But there were parts that were not discussed in the marketing or shown in photos. One part was a small sponge on the (advertised but not USA certified "bpa free") plastic intake pipe that clearly sits in the water being drawn into the pump. I wrote to the company and inquired about the sponge. The company said it was made of "polyurethane foam, specifically designed for use in pet drinking water." Saying "pet drinking water" raised a flag. Pets need safe clean water but do not have regulations protecting them as humans do. So I researched "polyurethane foam" use in human drinking water. I learned to be used in USA drinking water the foam must have NSF/ANSI 61 OR WRAS certification. The company said: "No, this sponge does not have individual NSF/ANSI 61 or WRAS certification. These specific certifications are typically applied to the entire water fountain product as a whole system, rather than to individual internal parts like this filter sponge. However, the sponge is still made from safe, non-toxic, and BPA-free materials, as confirmed previously." I do not trust that answer, and the company did admit the fountain cannot be considered safe for humans and refunded my money. I will throw the product away. I am pretty bummed that we cant make a safe drinking fountain for pets. I've looked at pretty much all of them, which is why I'm not specifically naming the company here. Others have more issues and hidden parts. There is a USA company who makes fountains for pets in public parks, but cost $1000s. Maybe it's all safe but I am unwilling to risk it. Props to the company for answering me, but it was like pulling teeth to get a direct answer other than "it's all safe for pets." Just wanted to relate my experience that there are parts sitting in water in these pet water fountains that are not USA certified, and made in China. Consider any risk of electrocution too, before buying a fountain. Feed wet food with human safe water from your sink to increase water intake, from a non-plastic glass or stainless steel bowl, that's what I'm doing. Put pressure on these companies to do better for our pets. Someone please make a safe, and affordable fountain. submitted by /u/Sqib000 to r/cats [link] [comments]

Actually good fountains??
I’m on my third fountain and losing my damn mind lol. My cat is a pretty good drinker even from a bowl, but I think she prefers the fountain. My issue is that I haven’t been able to find one that doesn’t get gross quickly. Started with a plastic fountain, switched to stainless steel so it could go in the dishwasher/less microplastics, that’s helped some but not entirely. I change the water out daily using filtered water (dump it out and entirely refill). Her fountain gets a deep clean every week where the dishwasher safe parts go through a sanitizing cycle. Everything else I meticulously hand wash, including taking the pump apart and cleaning the tiny crevices (I’m a lab scientist, so I’m relatively confident I’m doing a good job cleaning). Everything is allowed to air dry before reassembly, and I change the filter every 2 weeks. Even with this, there is some black gunk build up, and even a day or two with some minor error like an improperly installed filter leads to major mold. I’ve had to toss and repurchase plastic parts multiple times for this reason. Is there ANY fountain that doesn’t have so many tiny, mold-prone parts???? Has anyone found a cleaning frequency that mitigates this? I’m sure if I did a daily deep clean this would be less of an issue, but Christ that’s a lot of work for a 10% increase in fluid intake. In search of water fountain that is easy to clean
I know this is an old topic, but I am so sick of hard to clean water fountains. I have had a plastic one, which was a nightmare to clean, and now I have a stainless steel fountain, which is better, but with a submerged pump, is still difficult to clean. I literally need a special small detailing silicone brush, a toothpick, a bristle brush, and a cellulose sponge, and it still takes me half an hour. And there are still places that I can’t reach, even when I take it all apart (including the pump to the best of my ability). When the black moldy gunk accumulates enough in the smallest places, very small, seaweed-like strings break off and wash away. I even got a miniature water pressure pick to see if that will be able to clean it to my satisfaction. So, I am looking at models with external pumps or with siphon/gravity based mechanisms. One of the models that my search led me to is the FeelNeedy Pumpless Cat Water Fountain, which has an external pump. I need the real story on how easy it is to clean though, from people who have had this pump for a while. What I am concerned about is the white plastic-looking thing that sits in the water at the base of the white tube that feeds the drinking water up to the top level. There is only one picture of it that I can find, but it is shown at an angle that I can’t really tell whether it would be difficult to clean, and I can’t find a description of it. Can anyone comment on their experience cleaning this water fountain? Many thanks in advance. submitted by /u/LemonDropRush to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Second time the neighbor's white cat broke in. She always seems hungry and uses my cat's toys, water fountain, and litterbox
Luckily my (male) cat is chill and neutered so there's no fighting, only growling from the white cat. But seriously why even adopt a cat to dump them outside and have them break into houses for food and water? I don't want to keep her outside because it's dangerous (they also refuse to spay her) but I also only have one litter box and food that's not meant for her (I think she's like a year old vs my cat who is 8). Should I just buy equipment for this intruder at this point? To add, the owner "loves her" and refuses to let me keep her permanently. submitted by /u/ILoveBigCockroaches to r/CATHELP [link] [comments]

Best Cat Water fountain recommendation?
Hi, I need help.. My cat barely drinks from her regular bowl and I'm worried about her hydration. Looking for a reliable water fountain that will actually encourage her to drink more. What fountains have worked well for your cats? Any brands to avoid? Budget is flexible if it's worth it. Thanks for any recommendations! submitted by /u/menellus to r/CATHELP [link] [comments]

My cat won't drink from fountains or cat water dishes
But a hamster water bottle is acceptable to his lordship. Some water is better than no water at all? submitted by /u/ChaosLeopard to r/WhatsWrongWithYourCat [link] [comments]

My cat drinks like I poisoned her water :(
I inherited my step-grandmas senior cat and she’s the light of my life. However, she is VERY dumb and doesn’t know how to drink water like it’s not a danger to her health. She’ll dip her paws in the water a few times, then push the water against the side of the bowl while she drinks (she’s able to get some serious distance while doing it too, it’s honestly impressive). This was a known issue and I was given a bunch of left over pee-pads to keep underneath the water while she does this. However, she still manages to make a mess, despite me getting a water fountain for her which she REFUSES to entertain. Point of the post I guess; for anyone who had similar issues with your cat, what kind of bowl did you use to stop/deduce the spillage? I’ve got a few bowls picked out that I think will work but I’d like to avoid “trail and error” if I have to submitted by /u/omg_sugoi to r/CATHELP [link] [comments]

I had to make a water buffet because my cat is an asshole
We have three cats, one of which has about 3 half brain cells. He has dedicated his life to finding the source of water. Any water. He digs around and flips over bowls, fountains, glasses, you name it. We have tried literally every advice on the internet to stop him from messing with the water but nothing helped. Since an inflatable kiddy pool to put the water bowl in didn’t quite match my aesthetic I put the water fountain in a box in a box filled with plants. This way when the water spills (and it will) at least the plants benefit from it. The box is very heavy too so hopefully he won’t be able to move it around. submitted by /u/Virtuosory to r/cats [link] [comments]

Cat drank the water seal
I’m on week three of a sauerkraut ferment and I stupidly put in plain water instead of brine and the goblin cat drank it all. Do I need to process it now or can I reseal it? For the record: they have their own cat water fountain that was clean, full, and working submitted by /u/-Astrobadger to r/fermentation [link] [comments]

if you're using a cat water fountain, STOP
take my 2 day regular bowl challenge. Take the water fountain out and just fill your cat's bowl with water. See how much food particulate is left after each day or even EACH meal Now imagine, that food particulate being caught in the filter and bacteria growing over and over as day after day the food is being recirculated in the water. That's why when you clean the fountain its full of grime because that's bacteria from ALL the decomposing food bits in the water. "But I have a filter!" Yes, the filter is where the food is being caught but its just holding it as water flows over it, so its decomposing INTO the water and making it PRIME bacterial soup. EVERY cat fountain is making your cat sick and I can prove it, and you can prove it to yourself. Go back to the plain old bowl, change the water twice a day and you'll see your cat become MUCH healthier. edit: My point is that activated carbon will continue to leach organic matter even after a water change AND will continue to host bacterial colonies that create biofilm that you are always having to wash off. You can't "wash" activated carbon, and the amount of organic matter vastly overwhelms the carbon after just 1 feed. submitted by /u/rook2pawn to r/cats [link] [comments]

My cat refuses to drink from his water bowl and will only drink from my bathtub faucet. He will get in the tub and “meow” at me until the water is turned on. Is this normal?

LPT - Place your cat’s drinking water away from their food source. Instinctually, cats hunt away from their food source because evolution taught them prey can contaminate their water.
My 13 year old cats drink water all day long now that I’ve separated the two. After a few months of this, I got one of those fancy fountain style units too and they LOVE it. EDIT: As pointed out by u/Healing__Souls - cats hunt away from their water source as they know that carcasses can contaminate the water. EDIT 2: As pointed out by u/Kidbeninn - excessive drinking can be a sign of heath issues such as kidney disease, if you think this is the case call your vet! submitted by /u/paulyjm01 to r/LifeProTips [link] [comments]
