In addition to what the others above have said, you might also be able to get a credit union account. As for banks, ask around locally and you should be able to find and open a checking account with no minimum balance requirements and a free debit card. Why do big banks cash checks and close accounts with explanation?
I deposited a $13,000 check from my mom into Chase bank, with whom I've had my accounts for 15+ years. Chase called me saying they can't reach the account holder to verify the check. I asked what number they called, which was my dad's, so I called my dad, who didn't answer, and sent a text to both parents letting them know. My mom reached back confused why they called my dad since his number isn't associated with her account. After some time I come to realize they closed down my Chase account where I deposited the check, sending me a check of my account balance without the $13,000. But it turns out they never called my dad back, nor my mom, nor did they call her bank, yet they cashed her check of $13,000. I have a photo of the check and it looks exactly like all her checks always do. It took several calls to Chase to finally get the answer that they will not give us any explanation and that I should reference the clause in our agreement that they can close any account for any reason at any time, without explanation. They later wired the $13,000 to another account I had. And they said they got my dad's cellphone number from a third-party service, which his number isn't even the main line under their phone service... My mom's is. And it's her number associated with her bank account. Also, in one of the calls I made to find out about my account closing, the Chase representative told me outright misinformation about the account and the check, and when I asked to speak to someone else and was refused, I frustratedly shouted at her and used explivitives and was quickly hung up on. Later I received a letter from Chase something along the lines of me being flagged for how I treated their employee, which feels awfully gaslighting (even though it was a low moment) based on the series of events that led us to that moment and the fact that she was actively giving me outright misinformation regarding my account and missing $13,000. So I've seen numerous similar cases in the news of people fighting with Chase bank to get access to their money. What are the banks doing with people's money and why? submitted by /u/ChemicalArachnid2635 to r/Banking [link] [comments]

Gave My Airbnb Host 3 Stars for a Dirty Kitchen. 2 hours later, He Sent Me a $600 Bill.
I’m not a difficult guest, but if I’m paying a $150 cleaning fee, I expect the floors to actually be vacuumed. The place was "fine," but there were crumbs in the kitchen drawers and hair in the shower. I left a polite, honest 3-star review on Airbnb mentioning the grime. About six hours later, just as I was settling in at home, my phone buzzed. It was an official notification from the Airbnb Resolution Center. The host, "Marc," was requesting $640.00 for "Professional Floor Restoration." He attached a photo of a nasty, charred black circle right in the middle of the bedroom floor. His message was pure vitriol: "You absolute liar. You trashed my home. You left a massive burn on the original hardwood. I have to sand the whole room now. Don't think you’re getting away with this." My heart dropped. I don’t even smoke, and I don't own a hair straightener. I knew exactly what he was doing—he was "punishing" me for the 3-star rating by trying to flip a pre-existing issue into a $600 payday. I spent the next hour shaking with rage, scrolling through my phone. Then, I found it. I’m a paranoid traveler, so I always take a quick "walkthrough" video when I check in. I paused the clip at the 0:12 mark. There was the bedroom, the bed, and the blue area rug. In my video, the rug was slightly bunched at the corner—and there, peeking out from underneath, was the exact same black singe mark. He’d been hiding the burn under a rug, waiting for a "bad" guest to blame. I thought I had him. I found the Zillow listing from when the apartment was sold two years ago. I scrolled through the professional photos and Bingo. In the high-res shot of the master suite, the rug wasn't there yet, but the burn mark was. I sent the timestamped video and the Zillow link straight to Airbnb Support, feeling like I’d won. But then, ten minutes later, I got a notification. "Your case has been escalated." Marc replied to the thread with a "receipt" from a cleaning company dated yesterday morning saying the floor was inspected and clear before I arrived. It looks like a fake invoice, but it’s on official-looking letterhead. Now Airbnb is asking me for "additional proof" or they’ll automatically charge my card on file. I’m sitting here watching my bank balance, waiting for the support chat to agent to join Bad update: It’s been almost a day since the quote unquote final review started. I barely slept. I kept checking the Chase App every time my phone buzzed hoping they finally yanked the $640.The support agent I was talking to last night? Completely ghosted. I got automated email at around 4 am saying my "dedicated case manager" is "currently out of the office'" and will get back to me in 24-48 hours. Like what? Meanwhile, the $640 charge is sitting as a " Pending Transaction" on my card. And that's not even the worst part. Marc sent me a text at round 11 AM today. And said: "trying to use old Zillow photos to commit fraud. My lawyers have been notified. Good luck." I'm actually so scared rn Edit GUYS IT’S OVER.!!! I fianlly got through to a human at Airbnb support upport who actually looked at the attachments. I didn’t even have to argue. I just sent the Zillow link one last time and said something like look at the date on this listing from 2022. The burn is there. Look at my check in video. The burn is still also there. The agent left for like 5 minutes. Then she came back and said that they had reviewed the metadata of my video and cross-referenced the historical listing. Marc's claim has been denied. The $640 hold on my card has been released And here’s the best part,I asked what happens to Marc now. She couldn't give me details, but when I clicked his link around ten minutes ago,404 Page Not Found popped up He didn’t just lose the $640,they nuked his entire account for fraudulent documentation, I hope. All those fake cleaning receipts backfired. I just checked my Chase App and the 'Pending' charge is gone. I’m literally shaking from the adrenaline. Never staying in an Airbnb again. Chase just drained my account
Hi everyone, I really need advice because I feel completely stuck. This morning (9/11/2025) I woke up to an email from Chase saying my account was negative. When I logged in, I saw that my Chase Freedom Unlimited card had charged me the full statement balance of $8,507.67 instead of my usual minimum payment. That single transaction left my Chase checking account, which I have had open for over 6 years, at -$7,936.53. For context, Chase had previously placed my card on an “interest saving balance” option that let me make smaller payments. I never enrolled in this program, but they automatically put me on it. I also didn’t realize that the offer had ended. Now Chase is claiming that’s why the full statement balance was pulled, even though I have never paid the full balance on this card before and they can clearly see my history of only paying the minimum. I immediately started calling departments today including retail banking, fraud, credit cards, ACH, claims, and escalation. I have been given conflicting information all day. One rep said I just needed to sign a form and I would have my funds back today. Another said 2–3 business days. Another said a week. The last one told me it could take up to two weeks, and only if it gets approved. On top of that, I had two different supervisors from the credit card department hang up on me. One even told me, “We can’t do anything because we’ll just resubmit the payment again and again.” I offered to immediately pay the minimum due with interest, but they said they couldn’t help me. This situation has left me with literally $0 in my account. I have bills due this week including utilities, insurance, loan payments, and other credit cards. I am also expecting my paycheck tomorrow, but I will not be able to access it because my account is already in the negatives. I have been paying off my debts using the snowball method and had already knocked out 6 accounts, so this feels like I am being punished for making progress. Has anyone been through something similar or know what I can realistically do here? I feel completely trapped and desperate for help. submitted by /u/False_Photo_1110 to r/Chase [link] [comments]

Sallie Mae took $2,500 from my account with only $5 in it. Now I’m stuck with a -$2,495 balance and no way to eat or live for 60 days. What can I do?
UPDATE: I just wanted to thank every single person who replied to this post, offered advice, shared personal stories, or even just sent a kind message. I seriously wasn’t expecting this much support—let alone the people who reached out and offered money to help me get by. That completely floored me, and I don’t even have the words to explain how much it meant. This thread genuinely restored my faith in humanity. I'm taking my steps, little by little. I'm currently waiting to hear back about a full-time, salaried position today, so fingers crossed. I also applied for unemployment, and I’m currently in the waiting week—they said I should start receiving payments next week. I was actually able to dispute the $2,500 charge with Chase, which is huge, but now I still have to deal with Sallie Mae and figure out how to move forward with them. As for food, I found some local organizations that are helping me stay fed, and thankfully my rent is now covered. I have a little breathing room thanks to some truly generous strangers here. I’m beyond grateful. I hope every good thing you all wished for me comes back to you tenfold. 💛 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I’m in a complete financial crisis and could really use advice or insight from anyone who’s been through something like this. I have student loans through Sallie Mae, and my monthly payment is $2,500 (yes, you read that right—private loans, long story). I recently got laid off and couldn’t make the payment this month. I’ve already exhausted all deferment/forbearance options with them, and when I called to ask what else I could do, a Sallie Mae rep literally told me to just let the payment bounce, let it go to collections, and try to negotiate something more manageable there. Problem is… the payment didn’t bounce. I had $5 in my Chase checking account. Somehow, Sallie Mae was able to withdraw the full $2,500, leaving my account at -$2,495. I called Chase in total panic, and they basically said they have no idea why it went through either. But they also told me there’s nothing they can do—no reversal, no dispute, nothing. Their only suggestion? Let the account stay negative for 60 days, and then maybe I can apply for a Chase repayment program. So, I’m supposed to have absolutely no access to a bank account or debit card for two entire months. I have no backup cards, no other bank accounts, no savings. I’m broke. And I literally have no way to buy food or pay rent. I called Sallie Mae back again and asked if they could refund the payment, since they had advised me to not pay it in the first place. They said no, because refunding it would make my account delinquent… which is exactly what I was told needed to happen to reach the collections phase and work out a more realistic plan. So now I’m stuck. Jobless, broke, account locked up, and completely cornered by Sallie Mae and Chase. I feel like I’m being financially waterboarded. I genuinely don’t know what to do next. Has anyone been through this? Is there any way to escalate with Chase or Sallie Mae? Any organizations that help with this kind of thing? Legal aid? I’ll take any advice, I’m desperate. submitted by /u/OneJeweler1243 to r/StudentLoans [link] [comments]

Chase closed all four of my accounts
I’m 22 years old and Chase just closed all 4 of my credit cards, my personal checking account (which had about $5,000), and my business account (which had around $75,000). I called in and asked to speak with a supervisor, and was told the reason was “unusual activity.” The only thing I did recently was pay off about $20K in credit card debt. I’ve never missed a payment, and I was just trying to clean up my finances. I wasn’t given any specific details beyond being “flagged,” and now I’m extremely worried about the impact this will have on my credit score — especially losing 4 accounts at my age. Is there any way to get Chase to reconsider or reopen the accounts? Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Should I escalate this or file a complaint somewhere? Any advice would be appreciated. A lot of people are saying that I should open new checking accounts with another bank. What other bank would you guys recommend where I won’t have to face something like this again? Another question** Instead of having Chase issue me a check for my business account balance, can I just withdraw the full amount in cash? That way, when I open a new bank account, I can deposit the cash directly and avoid waiting 7–10 business days for a check to clear. I run a business, and managing cash flow is critical — my vendors give me 21-day terms, and if I don’t pay on time, they stop selling to me. That’s why I’d rather withdraw the full amount in cash instead of waiting 7–10 business days for a check to clear. But yeah, clearly trying to access my own money to keep my business running must mean I’m up to something shady lol. UPDATE** Looks like they closed all 4 of my credit cards and my personal checking but decided to leave my business account open. Literally just made an appointment with a banker at US Bank and a local credit union to open accounts. submitted by /u/Big_Isopod_567 to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

Chase Bank Closed My Account, Took My Money, and Left Me Stranded—Now They Won’t Give It Back
(Long post, but this has been an insane process. Thanks in advance to everyone offering helpful advice—I truly appreciate it!) On December 22nd, Chase shut down my account for “suspicious activity” without warning. Before that, they did call me about one major transaction—I confirmed it was legit, and they let it go through. After that, I only transferred money between my own Chase accounts (savings to checking)—no external transfers. Then, without notice, they closed my account entirely. They told me I’d receive a check for my remaining balance in 7–10 business days. That never happened. The Endless Runaround Begins On January 14th, I called, and they said my check was mailed on January 2nd after delays. Two days later, I called again—suddenly, the check wasn’t sent because it was still “pending verification.” Every rep I spoke with guaranteed me different broken promises with no resolution. At one point, a rep told me Chase had no way of contacting their back office—so no one could explain what was actually happening. After my account was closed, customer service told me to go into a branch to verify my identity. I did—while on vacation—only for the branch to say, “No, customer service has to verify it.” Another dead end. When I got home, I went into another branch, where the branch manager told me “a veteran is going around cashing in checks,” implying fraud. I personally asked, “Are you sure?” He was. Then he gave me the same number I’d already been calling for updates. I followed up, only for Chase to deny my claim again. Finally, Someone Actually Helps I went to a different branch, where the manager actually took my case seriously. He told me the VA needed to send a document confirming I was the intended recipient of my own money. So I sat in the parking lot, waiting until I got exactly what they asked for. When I went back inside with the document, he gave me the same line I’d been hearing this entire time—telling me to “give it an hour.” I waited a full day instead. I called back, and they told me verification went through, and that my checks were on the way: • Savings balance: 1 business day • Checking balance: 7–10 business days I never received the first check, so I waited for the second one. That one never came either. Chase’s Last-Second Excuse—And the IRS for Some Reason? I called again. This time, they said they couldn’t verify paper documents (even though it was a PDF, not paper). Then, out of nowhere, they put me on a three-way call with the IRS. No idea why. After I explained my situation again, the IRS rep immediately said, “Not our problem, it’s the VA.” So I got transferred to the VA, where I had to explain everything again—only to be told that the document had already been sent, and Chase had already denied it. The VA rep also found this weird and escalated it to a supervisor. When I explained everything to her (with the Chase rep still on the line), she confirmed my check had already been mailed. Then, the Chase rep interrupted her—asking for the check number. She couldn’t provide it on a three-way call, and he pushed again with no result. Finally, he accepted her verification and told me the account would be unfrozen and my funds released in 3–5 business days. Finally, Some Movement—But I’m Not Letting This Go Shortly after filing my CFPB complaint, Chase called me directly and said they were resolving the issue. However, I’m still pushing for: Immediate release of my funds, Compensation for the financial hardship they caused during my vacation, A legitimate reason for why my account was closed, A formal apology, Correction of any damage to my financial reputation caused by their actions News Agencies Are Taking Interest I’ve been contacted by a news agency about this, so I may share more soon. Final Thoughts This situation was completely absurd. I did everything right—called, went into branches, followed their instructions, and even got the VA and IRS involved. None of this should have happened. For those wondering, I was on top of this from the start—taking notes and recording calls—but after a while, it just got overwhelming. I also fully understood the privacy policies throughout this whole process and documented every step. If your comment doesn’t actually help, please just keep it to yourself. Negative 99k bank account balance
I accidentally deposited 100k into my Robinhood when I meant to put 1k. I tried canceling on Robinhood but there was no option and even contacted support. Well at that point I just accepted the transfer would probably get reversed and rejected by Chase and l'd pay a nfs fee and probably get my account restricted by Robinhood but Chase ended letting the transaction go through (I didn't expect this since l'm 18 and only had a 1k balance). So now I have a -99k balance and will probably pay an overdraft fee. I can transfer the funds back within 2 weeks since that's when the Robinhood transfer settles and lets me withdraw but will I be charged interest or are there any other fees that may be associated? Or even worse can I possibly get shut down and get sent to collections? I tried calling Chase today but the automated bot said their customer service office is closed so im just trying to find out info. submitted by /u/Consistent-Bowl7407 to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

Chase Bank 'Glitch' Goes Viral: What We Know, Don't Know - Newsweek
An apparent "glitch" at Chase Bank that allowed people to withdraw large amounts of money from their accounts without having the funds has gone viral on social media. According to social media users, some people exploited a system error to withdraw money after depositing fake checks into their accounts or after applying for large loans at Chase Bank ATMs. Chase has apparently rectified the issue, as some are now reporting that their accounts have massive negative balances or have had holds put on them. submitted by /u/Robert-Nogacki to r/business [link] [comments]

Why can my in laws see my wife's bank account information?
My wife has a chase college checking account and my in laws can see the exact balance she has in it. I was helping my MIL set up Zelle and she showed me her phone and my wife's bank account and balance (along with her's) were there when she logged in. We just sold our house so we have a good amount of money in there and I felt irked and like our privacy has been invaded when I saw that she can see how much money is in her account. Through a separate conversation, my wife told me that my wife is unable to transfer money from her account into her parents account but they have the ability to transfer money back and forth between accounts. Is my wife's account just an extension of her parent's account? How do they have so much control over the account like that? Seems like a strange set up. submitted by /u/sizillyd to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

Chase Bank took $25k from my dad's account without notice
My dad had a Chase credit card back in the early 2000's but closed it in 2004. As far as we know, it was closed and paid off in 2004. Last month, he was looking at his bank statements from his credit union and saw that Chase Bank had withdrawn $25k. He called Chase because he thought it was a mistake and they told him it was to pay for thee credit card that was closed in 2004. They said that the $25k included an unpaid balance, fees and interest. My dad found out that they had sent notices, but to the wrong address. He has lived at the same address since 1997. He checked his credit report and there is no sign of any type of judgement on there. He has also applied for car loans over the years and refinanced his house about 2 years ago, and no one ever brought up any judgements or delinquencies. My dad has a credit score of 730 as well. What are our options to get his money back? Do we need to reach out to a lawyer? submitted by /u/Bar-B-Que_Penguin to r/legal [link] [comments]

Life legitimately ruined by Chase Bank. Can I sue a large bank?
Okay, so ruined my life is slightly dramatic but they totally turned it upside down. I lost my credit card in December and I called Chase Bank to report it lost. I didn’t dispute any transactions. There was NO fraud. I just needed a new card. An employee mistakenly reversed six months of purchases - every single purchase I had made - by marking them as fraud. I would say at least 200 transactions were instantly reversed and I received $14,900+ in a statement credit. Dozens of businesses and individuals I’ve done business with began calling me daily asking why I disputed charges for products and services received. Eventually all my accounts like Target and Amazon were locked and I couldn’t use them since I had large “unpaid” balances. My cable and internet were shut off. I was kicked out of my gym. The short version is very few places had an ounce of sympathy and have treated me like a person who intentionally committed fraud. While they have reversed it finally (a month after my entire life was impacted) I’m still being greatly impacted. Just as a few examples, many of these places like my gym and cable and internet will no longer allow electronic payments and I’ll now be required to walk in and pay cash for all future payments due to the “attempted fraud” (which was actually a mistake by a Chase employee). Some companies say they haven’t even received the funds back from Chase. So, while these may seem like first world problems I have lost sleep and had literal anxiety attacks from all this. I’ve called every consumer protection attorney in my area and I can’t find one willing to sue a bank. I’m curious if anyone has any educated suggestions because I feel I should sue for damages. submitted by /u/ApartmentNo3272 to r/legaladvice [link] [comments]

Woke up to a $18k Overdraft - If you have a Chase account and a Lending Club HYSA, this might concern you.
Initiated a transfer on Lending Club in the amount of $10k, from my Chase checking to my Lending Club HYSA. This was yesterday, August 5th. And this morning I wake up and my account is overdraft by $18k. Turns out the transaction was done three times. Instead of taking out $10k, they took out $10k x 3 = $30k. I called Lending Club and the person on the phone immediately understood what I was talking about, and she let me know that they have received over a hundred calls this morning from customers with the same issue. They claim that they have been scrambling all evening/morning to figure out what has happened. She claims that they have gone as far as reaching out to Federal banking regulators to see what happened, and they are claiming it is an issue/glitch at Chase. They claim that no "extra" money has hit their end at all. The two extra transactions did not happen on their end. Called Chase, and was transferred to their claims department (somewhere abroad), but they told me that I am the first caller, and they have no knowledge of this issue. Their resolution is to send me a claim letter that I have to fill out and sign, and then mail back and things will be resolved within two to three weeks. So they expect me to sit with a negative balance of $18,000 for two to three weeks. Has anyone had this happen recently? Or ever? If what the CS rep at Lending Club told me is true, then there are hundreds of very upset people out there, some who had personal checks / mortgage payments / bills, etc. all bounce due to this issue. And from the defeated sound in her voice, and the "thank you so much for not yelling at me sir", I am inclined to believe the her that 1. This is widespread and 2. It is a glitch over at Chase UPDATE 8/8/2022 - Lending Club customer service has now been instructed to acknowledge that it is an issue on their end, and affects multiple banks. No timeline for a solution yet. UPDATE 8/9/2022 - The two duplicate transactions for $10k have cleared my account, along with the original one. No sign of refund or reversal yet. LC still saying that they are working on it submitted by /u/leatherdenimcanvas to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

Bank is charging me $12/month for not having enough money in a specific account. Can we just speed up this mass crypto adoption already?
Apparently the checking account at my bank CHASE is suppose to have a minimum starting balance of $1,500 or they charge me $12 for a "service fee". So if just one day out of the month, my account goes below $1,499, I automatically have to pay another $12. I could have $1,499 in a checking account and have $3,000 in a savings account, I'll still be charged the $12 monthly service fee. It's like taking more money away from people, just because they don't have enough money. I guess that's the American way huh I currently live in Thailand so I can't just change my bank, I'm just stuck with them and there's not much I can do right now other than just get shit on until I can go home in November and close my account. Fuck can we just speed up crypto adoption so we can stop the banks from fucking us every chance they get? submitted by /u/SlappySpankBank to r/CryptoCurrency [link] [comments]

TIL the operation of the largest fraud in US history was fairly simple. Bernie Madoff deposited all his investors' money into his Chase bank account and paid them off as necessary. At its height his account balance was over $5 billion. The scheme collapsed when he ran out of money.

Bank took $2000 out of my account and said it will be closed within a week.
So I finally got my renters assistance check from LA county for $2000 after 6 months of jumping through hoops. Check was in my name. Wife deposited it into out joint account with her mobile up. Today I check the account (Chase btw) and it's negative $2000 and they state my account will be closed frozen and closed within 10 days. Spoke to the bank and they said it was flagged as fraudulent deposit. I'm at a total loss at what to do. The program is the ERAS program in LA and they have no number you can call for help. submitted by /u/Barb0b0t to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

Chase closed my checking and credit card accounts and won't tell me why
Last Friday, I went to use my Chase Sapphire Reserve card and it was declined. I tried a different Chase card and it was also declined. Upon calling the number on the back of the Reserve card, I was told that Chase has decided to end their business relationship with me, that it's not a decision they make lightly, and that all of my cards and my checking account have been closed. If I hadn't called the number on the back of the card, I would have thought I was being scammed. The customer service agent wouldn't give me any details at all. In fact, they said they aren't privy to any details at all and just repeated a script over and over again (as did their supervisor and all other customer service reps I've spoken to since on the phone). The next morning, I went to my local branch and sat down with a personal banker. He looked over my account in detail. He was extremely sympathetic and tried to help, but he said he was blocked from seeing anything related to the closure and that it didn't come from the branch (it came from Chase corporate). He said that typically he can see that a decision has been made based on a drop in credit, churning cards, deposits and withdrawals of large sums for money laundering, other debt risks, or frequent overdrafting of accounts. None of this applies to me. My credit score is 823, I haven't opened or closed a credit card in years, I pay off all my cards and never hold a balance, and I'm not transferring in or out large sums of money. His personal guess was that I was erroneously flagged for money laundering or terrorism by their algorithm and somebody signed off on that nonsense. He told me a letter should be arriving in a few days and that it could possibly clear things up some. It arrived today. It did not. This has been tremendously stressful. All my credit was with Chase - which I'm now realizing was a terrible decision - and I've saved up quite a bit of Ultimate Rewards points that I now have to scramble to do something with. I also have no idea if I've been somehow flagged as a terrorist or if my identity has been stolen. I'm also worried about the hit to my credit score. So far, I've transferred all of my cash to a new checking account, have researched what new credit card to apply for, and changed every single one of my randomly generated passwords just in case. Has anyone ever been able to get to the bottom of this if they were in the same situation? Were they able to clear their name, so to speak, and get their cards back open? Any suggestions of how to get Chase to tell me what the hell is going on? Any help would be very much appreciated. submitted by /u/improbableshapes to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

Is there any reason to NOT close my second bank account?
I bank with chase and with a local credit union. Chase charges me $12/month for checking and the credit union doesn’t. Edit: I’m aware that I can maintain a $1500 or $500 in monthly direct deposits but those aren’t options for me right now. thanks! Is there any reason not to put all my money in the credit union and use that as my only bank? Edit: Thanks all! I’ve just opened a savings and checking account with discover and will be closing my chase account shortly! submitted by /u/speckofSTARDUST to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

Closed my Chase account over the phone. Account balance check lost in the mail. Now they don't know how to issue a new one.
UPDATES AT BOTTON I closed my Chase checking account last month because it had a stupidly high minimum balance and I rarely ever used it because I bank somewhere else. I stupidly decided to close the account over the phone. (For future reference, ALWAYS go to a branch to close the account.) I had a balance of around 2,500 and I was assured I would receive a check in 14 business days. 14 business days come and go, and no check. I call in and inquire. Chase assigns a research analyst to my case. She calls me and tells me to go to a branch to sign an affidavit to have the check reissued. I go to my branch and tell them my situation. They have no idea what I am talking about. I call my research analyst and she does not answer. After sitting in an employee's office for 3 hours while they call around, they figure out what affidavit I need to sign. I sign and they fax it in. Now comes the weird part. After the branch faxed the affidavit in, they told me they are unsure if they were allowed to reissue the check and that I should call customer support to see when I would receive the check in the mail. I call the analyst assigned to my case and she doesn't pick up the phone for 2 days. I finally call the general number and have me transferred to her. She tells me the branch should issue the check to me after my affidavit gets processed, but that she has no way of telling me when the the affidavit will be reprocessed and that the branch will be in touch. I go back to the branch and the guy who helped me is now on vacation. So my questions are: Is Chase bullshitting me? Who exactly is supposed to give me the check. If Chase is stonewalling me for some reason, what recourse do I have? tl;dr Chase lost my check and doesn't know how to cut a new one. What do? Edit 1: I should add it has been a month since I closed my account. I'm very sure my check isn't coming. Edit 2: for the people encouraging me to call and threaten action. Should I call on Monday? Edit 3: I am going to post updates to my ordeal in case anybody else goes through this in the future. Edit 4: I tweeted to @chasesupport yesterday. They contacted me and told me to call their telephone support line... Edit 5: Calling Chase and threatening complaint with FDIC. They are still giving me the same bullshit runaround. Now they are telling me that they don't have my affidavit and that I need to sign another to get the check mailed to me. This is now the third story I have been told. Edit 6: And now they are telling me to go back to the branch. The manager said she noted a number for the branch to call in order to confirm they can cut the check. I am going to go to the branch on Monday. If they can't figure it out in 30 mins I am going to file complaints with the CFPB and FDIC. I think I have been more than reasonable with these people. Edit 7: For posterity: If you are closing your account always go into the branch to do it. I would not withdraw the funds and then close: I know chase hit me with a $25 for having a balance below 1500 for a couple of days. This was originally why I got pissed and closed my account. In hindsight I probably would have gladly eaten the $25 charge to avoid this mess though. Edit 8: Apparently the replacement check was sent out on November 12th. They are telling me to go back to to the branch if I don't receive anything by the 29th. I still haven't received anything. My bullshit meter tells me it doesn't take almost 2 weeks for a check to arrive in the mail. If I don't receive anything by the 29th I'm done dealing with them and filing suit in small claims court. Only reason I'm waiting until the 29th is because it makes my position stronger (I look more reasonable). Edit 9: For people who suggested threatening regulatory action, it was a good idea. It basically got me nowhere though. I'm still going to file with the FDIC and NYAG because they can pursue actions while litigation is ongoing. Office of the Comptroller apparently cannot intervene with other agencies/litigation is proceeding. submitted by /u/dabigchina to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]
