We had leftover corned beef & cabbage for another few meals so ended up with 5 servings from 3# of corned beef and a head of cabbage. We will use the last of the potatoes and cabbage as a soup for lunch because we have a hearty prime rib dinner tonight at a restaurant before the theater.

RE:Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend everyone. How Irish are you and where in Ireland is your heritage from?
No Irish ancestry, but Scottish. We’ve never celebrated St. Patrick’s day, interestingly enough. My relatives do, making corned beef and cabbage (I usually pass ) I think I’ve only been pinched a couple times in my life for not wearing green (why is that even a thing?! lol).

My little town hosts a very big pub crawl. There’s people everywhere and many of them are drunk. I don’t drive on SPD because there are so many drunk pedestrians, probably drivers, and it’s just … intense. Staying home, cooking corned beef and cabbage, and relaxing is the way to go!

We need to improve corned beef and cabbage on St Paddy's day
It is time to level up on this traditional dish. Let's add a nice sauce for the cabbage. Potatoes can be roasted and seasoned with thyme, rosemary and parsley (all readily available in Ireland). No notes on the corned beef and cold Guinness, which are perfect as is. submitted by /u/California55551 to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Living in America in March as someone actually from Ireland.
Born and raised in Louth and moved to New York with my family in the 2010s. Every March I experience a strange cultural phenomenon where Americans suddenly become much more Irish than I am. For roughly three weeks straight, I am treated less like a person and more like a live-in Ireland fact-checking service and a tool to validate people’s identities. Today’s highlights from the office: * A coworker asked me what we call “french fries” in Ireland. * Before I could even open my mouth, my “Irish” coworker (who has visited Ireland once and therefore is now apparently the cultural attaché )stood up extremely fast to answer for me. * She then launched into a passionate speech about how great Irish politics are and how she wishes she lived there instead of America. * She then asked me why my parents dragged me here. * Immediately after that she informed another coworker he isn’t allowed to say he’s Irish because he’s “not Irish enough.” Looked to me to validate it. Being gatekept from your own nationality by someone whose connection to Ireland is a great-great-gran from 1870 is a truly unique experience. Every March this happens. People American-splain Ireland to me, ask if we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day “over there too,” and begin sentences with things like: “My family’s VERY Irish.” “I make corn beef and cabbage every year” Anyway, if the people at home could keep your brother and sisters us living in America in your thoughts during Paddy’s season, it would be appreciated. I plan to remain indoors until April. submitted by /u/Secret_Protection471 to r/ireland [link] [comments]

A year of work mapping U.S. regional food traditions [OC]
After a year of research, debate, and help from many of you in your home regions, I’ve finished a national map of 78 U.S. food regions. Each area is based on distinct culinary traditions shaped by geography, culture, and history, from Gullah and Tex-Mex to Monroe BBQ and Crucian cuisine. I’d love your feedback: Did I miss something obvious? Should a region be renamed, removed, or split further? A version of this map’s headed to print next year as part of a national cultural atlas, so this is the last round of tuning before it gets locked in. Methodology note: This map is interpretive rather than purely statistical. Regions were defined using a mix of historical settlement patterns, agricultural zones, immigration history, regional dishes, and feedback from locals across multiple revisions. This is the 5th major revision, and I’m posting here specifically to invite critique before it goes to print as part of a larger cultural atlas. Edit- just tried to reupload this in higher resolution. I went as high res as Reddit would let me. Sorry if it's still blurry or unreadable. DM me or look at links in my profile and I'll point you to a higher-res version submitted by /u/piri_reis_ to r/dataisbeautiful [link] [comments]

TIL corned beef and cabbage isn’t a traditional Irish dish. The real meal is bacon and cabbage, but Irish immigrants in the US substituted more readily available corned beef.

How we cooking our corn beef and cabbage?
My dad always made a delicious corn beef and cabbage every year. Unfortunately he had a severe stroke in May and is unable to share his technique with me (he taught me how to cook everything before the stroke). My mom says just boil everything, which seems wrong lol. I don't have a slow cooker or Dutch oven. Only a large stock pot (which is how my dad would cook it). I feel like I'll be boiling the brisket, then add the potatoes and carrots to the bottom, the cabbage on top. But does anyone have an actual recipe and process for a delicious meal? I want to make it the right way! Thank you, and enjoy your St Patrick's Day delicacies! submitted by /u/ivyandroses112233 to r/Cooking [link] [comments]

Is corned beef and cabbage historically Irish or is it something Americans made up and associated with the Irish?
With St. Patrick's coming up and my irish roots I was wondering how "authentic" corned beef and cabbage is. Is it like the US version of Cinco de Mayo? Edit: Thank you for all the responses, I did not know about the Irish and Jewish connections when they came to America and I appreciate being educated today. submitted by /u/the_Jolly_GreenGiant to r/AskFoodHistorians [link] [comments]

Corned beef is on sale right now. Its cured so it will last a while longer than fresh meat, and you can jazz up the leftovers easily. 90 Second Recipe: Corned Beef and Cabbage
https://youtu.be/MsrqzQnAIqo Corned Beef 2 Onions 2 Carrots 3 Stalks Celery 6 Russet Potato 12 oz Beer 2 Tbls Butter Olive Oil Salt and Pepper Apple Cider Vinegar Cut 1 Onion, Carrots, and Celery. Set aside. Drain Brine from corned beef and pat dry with towel. Gently sear corned beef. Add beer and water until corned beef is covered. Add chopped Onion Celery and Carrot. Gently boil for 2 hours (medium to med low) Meanwhile slice cabbage and 2nd onion. Combine in sheet pan and spritz apple cider vinegar and olive oil on cabbage, add salt and pepper. Cover with foil and cook at 400 for 40 minutes. Cut Potato to decent chunks (quarter or eighth depending on size) add to corned beef. Continue to cook for 30 minutes. Boom there you go.
