Thread Ethnic nepotism and bias in Seattle tech industry It has already been deleted by mods but you can find the text in this screenshot First of all I am not against H1B as long as it is meritocratic and does not come with the expense of other eligible candidates. I intend to start a conversation here but please share your anecdotes respectfully. Over the last 10 years, I've had the opportunity to work for Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle as a software engineer. I was laid off from my latest role at Oracle in March, and since then I still haven't managed to land a new role. From my observations working on more than a dozen teams across three big-tech companies, I think the disproportionate bias toward H-1B talent in big tech has less to do with cost-saving than with ethnic nepotism. Cost-cutting might be a motivation at smaller consultancy shops, but definitely not at Fortune 500 companies. Earlier in my career, I used to dismiss this phenomenon or give it the benefit of the doubt, but lately it's been impossible to ignore 3 the blatant nepotism. What I and many of my colleagues and friends have noticed is that Indian managers disproportionately prefer hiring Indian engineers. When I was at Amazon, our team had an opening for an L5 SDE (a mid-career role). My manage rejected half a dozen good candidates from here and ended up hiring someone directly from India. That person transferred to the US on an L-1 visa, and the whole process took about two months The Drama I'll add my two cents as a hiring manager at Amazon who is not Indian but otherwise foreign. I put a lot of effort and energy into building diverse teams. My genuine dilemma is that if I open a role, nearly 90+% of applicants I get are Indian men. And I also don't want to be unfair to these candidates which makes things tricky. Further, one of the managers under me who is Chinese American is currently hiring for a few roles and nearly all candidates are Indian men. I've directed them to try to build a diverse team but they come back saying they can't find other candidates. You just admitted you are a racist who discriminates against people based on race. Why can’t you look at a human being as an individual ? Because I've led tons of teams and I know the tangible value in building diverse teams. A high functioning team requires a mix of individuals from different backgrounds. This is across gender and race btw which is why I specifically mentioned men. But while he has plenty of friends there, not everyone is happy to see him strolling through the aisles or curled up on the printing kiosk. A complaint against Nutmeg was filed with CVS’ corporate offices a few days later, according to the cat’s owners, Joe and Gabi Moore. Technically speaking, the complainant has the state on their side. With the exception of service animals, pets aren’t permitted inside grocery stores, pharmacies and other businesses that sell food, according to the Oregon Department of Agriculture. And CVS’s corporate officials aren’t feline good about breaking the law. “We love Nutmeg too, but as a pharmacy and food retailer, we must maintain an animal-free environment to protect the health and safety of everyone we serve,” the company said in a statement. “Service animals are always welcome, but pets are not permitted inside.” However, people in the community have made clear what they want. Hi guys, so recently I was approached by an acquaintance I made recently to embark on some new business opportunity for financial freedom and personal improvement. He told me that he would put me in touch with his mentor and they would interview me for an opportunity to be mentored under him. They said that there would be an "education period" of around 4-6 weeks. He stressed how his mentor doesn't take "just anybody" and doesn't look at their "CVs" but at their willingness to grow and learn. This mentor told of how he met a couple who had achieved financial freedom in their early thirties and retired. Inspired by this he was mentored by them and has now retired his wife and is looking to retire himself in the near future. He said that their business focuses on "streamlining supply chains for companies" and "leveraging a network marketing vehicle" in order to create money. The mentor would not take any money for the mentoring, but once I start making money through this business model, I'd give him a 6% commission. I was then told to read the book "The Business of the 21st Century" by Robert Kiyosaki before meeting with them to discuss the next steps and meeting the rest of their team. To me this sounds like some elaborate pyramid scheme and my gut tells me not to go through with this. Is this a scam? P.S. I live in Europe and not the US. About 1.5 years ago, I made a post in this sub saying that I had made the decision to move to Austin and was afraid that the city would "eat me alive". This was the first time I've moved in a major way, and my first time living outside of the rural midwest. I just thought moving might end up being a mistake and that I'd ruin my life or something drastic. Everyone that commented on that post was extremely encouraging, and I thought I'd give an update on my time here: I've worked at the same restaurant I was hired at in the first month living here and been promoted. Everybody in my workplace gets along, like REALLY wonderfully get along- like we're all bffs at a slumber party getting paid to giggle and braid each other's hair while telling secrets. It's lit. I've made more friends here than I've ever had in all my life. I and my cat are in good health, accessing healthcare has been relatively easy. I enjoy taking the bus damn near anywhere I need to go (idgaf about any capmetro criticism rn, there is ZERO public transit where I'm from, so it's a blessing for me here). THE PUBLIC LIBRARY, holy shit, I'm even walking distance from one location. I always read my books during bus rides. And I always look up from my book to watch the skyline whenever the bus is crossing the river. I was able to participate in Good Work Austin's culinary workforce training, awesome program and incredible that such a thing exists. I pick up gigs from their network from time to time. There are things that are so abundant here that I had to travel more than an hour to get back home: Boba. Craft supply stores (creative reuse store and used2 !!!). Nepali food. Dentists. Goodwill, and other decently-sized thrifts. Bookstores. Waffle house. Sushi. Late night food in general- no place was open past 11pm back home. Here, I can get a vegetarian burger at any hour I please. It's so convenient and it's sorta wild to me. HEB butter tortillas. The fruit stand off of pleasant valley. I can't eat meat anymore but when I could I ate a tamale I bought from a lady in a cvs parking lot at 5am after a terrible overnight shift and I think she was actually an angel in disguise because that tamale brought me back to life. As the title says. I usually fill with CVS because it's a larger pharmacy but BOTH the CVS pharmacies (which are the closest pharmacies to me) have broken elevators from the underground garage for the past month(ish) and I don't know how to pull the "ADA Card" so to speak to get these fixed sooner. I can't park anywhere else, and it's a very steep ramp to get up to street level that I can't push myself up and it'd also put me at high risk for being hit by a car coming into the garage as I'm (obviously) lower to the ground and can't see cars entering the garage until it's too late (assuming I could make it up the incline, which I can't). I called both of them and they both couldn't tell me who the building owner is (there are residential apartments above both pharmacies). At this point I'm just transferring all my prescriptions to a different (but much further away) pharmacy but it's going to be a giant pain because I have to get new rx's for all my controlled substances as they can't transfer over directly (apparently) of which I have a handful. Among other annoyances (I know, #firstworldproblems ) but I can't get over how long these elevators have been out of order and the inability to reach out to maintenance/building supervisors, etc.. This is an update from my previous post here: went back to Pantene after 11 years Hi everyone - The update a lot of you have been asking for and long overdue! I want to include some more information about the products i've been using from Nov 1 to Today and give my thoughts on them as well as some details about my hair and lifestyle just to give a little context since all hair is different. Hair and lifestyle details: Color: highlighted (top portion near my roots is my natural color - dirty blond/blond) Hair Type: 2A Density: Medium *I shower daily and wash my hair almost daily, with decently hot water *I style my hair with a blow dryer almost daily *I am aware these are bad habits Timeline/Explanation of abrupt switch off Pantene: When I switched to Pantene (my original post) I was so blown away with how my hair felt and looked but didnt attribute the contrast to going from a heavy, moisturizing product (Moroccan oil), to a very clarifying product - hence the excitement. And in my opinion, just because something makes your hair look good short term does not mean it will be good to your hair longterm. I continued to use Pantene for almost a month (December 17th - January 8th), and in-between that time I went to get my hair cut right before Christmas. My hairstylist of 7ish years asked what products I was using and I told her Pantene. She didn't get up in arms by any means but she paused and gave me a look like "ookaaaay" and didnt force me to stop but strongly suggested I not use it and gave some quick background on why (aka not good ingredients). I never thought to ask her what products she uses on my hair but it always feels and looks so good when I leave the salon so I asked her that day and she told me she was using Goldie Locks shampoo and conditioner - Disclaimer: She sells this product at her salon but she did not push me to buy it from her, in fact I did not buy it from her. My hair felt so soft, smelled so good, and looked so good it snapped me out of the Pantene daze I was in (see pros and cons in product reviews for my overall Pantene experience). I then went and purchased the goldie locks shampoo and conditioner products on Amazon (which in hindsight i probably should have just bought them from my hair stylist bc...Amazon...[eyeroll]) and have continued to use it today with the same results after each wash. In summary, sorry to push Pantene so hard I think I just got excited over a much-needed clarifying hair wash. Product Reviews: (literally this is not sponsored or promoted in any way, wish it was lol) MORROCAN OIL SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER: I used this product for months over the summer and felt it made my hair darker, oily and heavy - it was manageable but made me try and find a new solution. PROS: If you need moisture bad, good for dry and brittle hair CONS: Longterm will make your hair heavy and oil quickly Hair could not hold a style unless a ton of hairspray was involved Scent doesnt stay in hair PANTENE SHEER VOLUME SHAMPOO AND MOISTURE CONDITIONER: After using Morrocan Oil, I ran out and was tired of spending money on expensive shampoo and went to CVS and bought Pantene. I used this product initially and was wow'd. After every day use I noticed my hair's texture felt strong/tough, which eventually led to breakage. I felt the same way when I used Olaplex but without the breakage. It was almost as if it coated my strands and "froze them" which made them susceptible to breakage in my opinion. This product may have made my hair LOOK perfect, but it was not a good solution long term. PROS: Good for clarifying Hair LOOKED good! Obligatory I'm not affiliated with this business in any way, just a customer that wanted to spread the word. They're absolutely amazing. I'm transgender, and getting my controlled substance prescription filled consistently was a nightmare before I found this place. It's the only place I've been to where they consistently fill my medication a week before it's needed without me babysitting them, send me consistent reminders via text, don't have huge wait times/lines when picking up, and don't make me have to battle my insurance company in the process. It's also family owned, and they genuinely seem to care about their customers. If they take your insurance, consider giving them a shot. I'm pretty sure they deliver within a five mile radius as well. The only complaint I have is they don't seem to have certain ADHD meds in stock consistently, but that's an everywhere problem I think. I've heard that they're also struggling making ends meet, since they can't afford to eat the losses that come from dealing with insurance companies that bigger pharmacies can. The thought of having to go back to playing phone tag with whatever big name corporate pharmacy that doesn't give a shit about me just to get my medication filled on time every month, and inevitably having to skip doses as a result of them filling my shit late, fills me with dread. It involves big (very big) numbers and "glitches". As usual, TL:DR: at the end; ---------- August 20th 2025 The Gamestop Saga Is Weird. The Data Is Even Stranger. When I first saw this data it bewildered me enough to fall a bit silent on the topic. I've finally formed a hypothesis about what I found. I’m going to start this off by saying that this article will not be “fun” to read. It’s going to be full of charts, tables, and definitions of things. I apologize in advance. That said, I think the largest criticism people like me face is the claim: “you guys just invest on memes, you don’t even have data to support your arguments,” so this is a necessary article. You probably already know what this is about. If you don’t, I recommend reading my previous, (and much more entertaining) article, outlining how we got here. The story is weird. The community involved in it is VERY weird. And yet, the data we have parsed through over the years manages to be the most strange. I’m not sure if “strange” is actually the right word. To be honest, when I first uncovered the data this article will dissect, it scared me so thoroughly that I mostly stopped commenting about the situation for some time. I genuinely feared how this could potentially unravel, and I know the average person has been conditioned to view people like me as “the problem” here, for the mere crime of buying a stock and deciding to hold it indefinitely as a dedicated, disciplined investor. *gasps of collective horror* So, against my better judgement — I enter back into the foray of being a “regarded memestock cultist” or whatever the current stigma now is. Let’s look at the data. I sourced this data from this DTCC repository which I have linked, so you can view it for yourself and verify that I am not making anything up. There is quite a bit of interesting data in here, all of it required as part of the European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR), which mandates data reporting to all trade repositories within EU jurisdiction. In other words, this is not something the DTCC makes public out of the goodness of their hearts, nor is it some broken, experimental database — it is strictly enforced, defined under highly specific regulatory framework, with a purpose to add reliable transparency to certain market transactions. What caught my eye though, was the equities row, single-sided non-EEA column of Table 1: A Breakdown of the aggregate open positions per derivative class. For starters, let me define what is going on in this specific field: Equities is a very broad term that refers to all derivatives whose underlying asset is an equity — for example, a stock. Thus, “equities” could include equity swaps, options, or other derivatives that are based on an underlying value such as a company stock price. OTC is an acronym for (Over-The-Counter). No, this is not like a prescription you pick up at CVS. In the financial world, this means that the trade was executed off of an organized exchange like the NYSE. These types of trades are often negotiated directly between two parties, allowing for special customization beyond what you might be able to access via an app like Fidelity. These trades and agreements can fly under the radar, avoiding certain public scrutiny, but their existence, and certain features, must still be eventually reported under certain guidelines to regulatory agencies. Single-Sided means that only one counterparty has reported the transaction to DDRIE (The Dublin, Ireland DTCC Data Repository). In other words, one side of the trade is outside of DDRIE jurisdiction, such as from/to the UK or the USA. Non-EEA denotes that one party is at least known to be outside of the European economic area. So, what this suggests is that this field specifically records certain, private derivative transactions that were negotiated internationally between two parties (probably) in the USA/UK and the EU, respectively. The table that this data is on suggests that this is the total outstanding notional value of all summed positions in a given week, that are currently open (closed, executed, or terminated derivatives would not appear, for example). Notional value is by itself, another very annoying term to deal with here, as it makes it difficult to ascertain the actual exposure to an underlying asset that a trade has. An options contract, for example, might have a realized value of $0 (if it expires), but a notional value of $1,000 (right to purchase 100 shares of a stock that is currently trading at $10/share). When you get into other derivatives like swaps and forwards, it becomes extremely unclear to an outsider what the monetary difference here is. I understand if you need to re-read that segment, or come back to it repeatedly, as it is a lot of information to absorb if you are not familiar with these concepts. With that said, I will explain why this data caught my attention. Typically, this field contains a figure close to 2 trillion (Dollars? Euros? I was unable to figure this out, but the difference is negligible, so I’ll just use $ for convenience. I was at least able to confirm that this is not simply volume). That is $485 QUINTILLION. That is 485 million trillions. That number is so astronomically, unfathomably large, it pretty much loses it’s practical purpose and might as well just be infinity for the sake of pretty much any type of conversation. As I said, this is notional value, which means this represents a massively inflated portion of real money that could end up in someone’s pockets, but again, this number is absurd. Even if 0.0001% of that is something that could potentially be realized, we are still talking about $485 TRILLION, which is still almost 5x larger than the entire global economy. At first, my common sense told me that this has to be a mistake. There is just no way that this is not some script error, or a fat-fingered input, or something along those easily dismissed possibilities. So I did a bit of searching, and a bit of questioning. As I said, this is not some willy-nilly system, this is one of THE data repository required to exist publicly under European law. Surely, if something like this was actually occurring, and it was not an error, the European investigators would be all over this. I decided to simply reach out to the DDRIE, and was met with a very generic, dismissing response telling me that they would investigate the issue, but that their data is accurate in accordance with regulatory requirements, and that any such “mistakes” would be quickly caught and corrected, if they exist. That was many months ago, and the data still exists, so I tend towards assuming it is not erroneous. There goes my “cat sat on someone’s keyboard” theory. I was going to try reaching out to actual regulators, but honestly did not know where to start, as an American citizen. I recently stumbled on an article, by someone who did know where to begin with asking similar questions about European market data. Welp. Damn. His experience seems to explain why EU regulators are not all over this data. They do not want to investigate this type of thing if it threatens major financial figures. What I discovered was not shocking. I mean, we “apes” have been noticing how many dots seem to connect back to Gamestop since 2021, so I would almost be surprised if this wasn’t somehow related to Gamestop or other “Meme stocks.” That said, I tried to go into this without seeking confirmation bias that Gamestop is some weirdly idiosyncratic risk in the global markets. Yet, my findings still slapped me hard with overwhelming confirmation of my bias. I first looked as far back into the data as I could, to see if there was ever a situation where comparable figures had cycled through this repository. Nope. Not even the global market chaos of the covid-19 pandemic seemed to really affect the stability of the data in this specific field. There was nothing really comparable in recent events, either. The data I discovered was indeed a huge, massive outlier with no equal. The massive spike in these figures oddly occurred the exact week that the infamous Keith Gill began posting about Gamestop on Twitter, on the heels of the stock suddenly running wild, despite years of previously dormant behavior. Nothing else particularly interesting happened on the markets that week, or even that month, short of the revived interest in Gamestop and its bizarre stock behavior. The astronomical figures recorded by the DTCC, however, would continue climbing over the following weeks to that insane peak of almost $500 quintillion, up until Gamestop’s CEO, Ryan Cohen, issued a shocking 75-million share offering into the boiling-hot situation (in hindsight, this was a wise executive decision, despite the fact that it caused very split opinions in the investor community). I could write an entire article about that decision alone, but I will try to focus on understanding the data at hand here. What occurred after the offering was a very rapid decay of the DTCC’s absurd equity figures, until they once again stabilized at the ~$2 trillion baseline they consistently exist at. I have graphed the entire saga below, and also included some other labels of other major market events, to give you a visual idea of just how anomalous this is for the international markets. It’s worth noting I had to mathematically manipulate the DTCC data logarithmically to even visualize it correctly here, because it was just so incredibly extreme. As someone who is deeply invested in this saga for years now, I am no stranger to how often bizarre market behavior “coincidentally” aligns with Gamestop’s stock behavior, but this really blows all those other examples out in proportion. Sure, we have dissected things like basket trades, swap expiry dates, arbitrage wars on other financial instruments, and found them to highly correlate to Gamestop’s stock behavior more than most other stocks, but these figures are so extremely they go from interesting, to downright worrying. Going forward, I’m going to give my best shot at interpreting what this means for Gamestop, and for the global economy as a whole. It is technically possible — although extremely improbable — to rationalize this astronomical EMIR data as accurate, but only under extreme conditions. Values like this could only be explained by massive derivative activity, and not of the simple kinds like options. This data would suggest that the underlying derivatives are primarily complex instruments like swaps tied to a single, highly active stock. There would, however, need to be many compounding factors: High-frequency trading with derivatives. For example, if millions of total return swaps are traded daily, and algorithmically, being opened and closed automatically. A trigger for this behavior could be the need to wage arbitrage or hedging pressure around a highly shorted stock, such as Gamestop. Massive synthetic exposure via derivatives. Someone might use complex financial derivatives to create synthetic exposure to a stock. If multiple counterparties to these transactions rolled them daily, the notional values could balloon. Some hedge funds or brokers might be motivated to churn their equity swap books daily to either hide or reset their exposure. “Gamma traps.” An explosive growth of an active stock can lead to extreme hedging behavior, which could possibly cause a feedback loop as more parties are forced to hedge more aggressively against the price action caused by previous hedges. Experimental or unknown volatile financial products. Frankly, I don’t know about everything that exists, and I doubt anyone else does. It would be foolish to assume there could not be some new or unheard of financial instruments at play here that were being used experimentally. Derivative dealers are constantly inventing new ways to play underlying assets, so this is at least a possibility. So in short, it is *possible,* but would probably require a combination of: Short settlement cycles Daily resets Massive synthetic positions Manipulatory settlement churn Many involved counterparties Dangerous, experimental financial products I figured I’d ask AI if this kind of data is even theoretically possible, but even chat-GPT seemed stunned by the magnitude of the data, responding: “Even if all the above were true, for notional values to regularly cross into the quintillions, you would need: Billions of derivative contracts per week On extremely leveraged equities involved in an unprecedented global event Across many large counterparties All routed through the same trade repository Without being offset on the other side That’s bordering on systemic manipulation or market infrastructure abuse—and should draw regulatory action.” Oh, chat-GPT, you sweet summer child. Bernie Madoff and Theranos should have drawn regulatory action too, but we all know how wonderfully regulators function. What I think is most troubling about all of this though, is the lack of comparable situations in market history. As I showed in the first chart, events like NVDA flash crashing $600 billion of value overnight barely registered as a blip on this derivatives radar. Trump erasing trillions in gains with global tariff panic didn’t either. So what is so damn special about some hole-in-the-wall retail stock gaining a few billion in value unexpectedly? It just doesn’t make sense, from a purely logical, outsider’s perspective. Why would that particular event cause such a seismic tsunami in the overseas derivatives markets? I suspect, because Gamestop’s particular stock is being used disproportionally as an underlying asset in these markets, or is massively over-leveraged with derivative exposure. We know both sides of this war have only doubled down since 2021, with retail religiously buying and holding, and Wall Street refusing to capitulate while pushing back against the buying pressure. There were other researchers who were theorizing as far back as 2021 that Gamestop could be the epicenter of a massive institutional swap position (the kind, or maybe even the same one, that rapidly toppled Archegos and Credit Suisse). This data seems to support that theory, indicating that it is highly likely certain institutions have hidden their short interest in the stock via hidden synthetic derivatives and/or massive, concentrated hedges like total return swaps that are rolled regularly to obfuscate public visibility. It is also possible that institutions are using derivative positions in the stock to construct synthetic financial vehicles, in an effort to find loopholes to regulatory thresholds on their exposure. Regardless, Gamestop might be a “small stock” but if this is true, it is behaving in the system as a structural cornerstone, with derivative activity vastly outsized compared to the actual valuation of the underlying company. This could have many implications for the wider economy and global market. If this kind of massive activity spikes around a mid-cap stock event, but not during massive macroeconomic situations, it suggests that the markets no longer react as a whole to economic value, but to hidden mechanics like internal leverage, hedging practices, and position maintenance. In other words, your major in economics is now useless, time to switch to engineering and study the gears of the machine instead. Another implication is that there is massive, interconnected risk around this specific stock. A full capitulation in one direction or the other could result in an economic crisis for whoever the “losers” turn out to be. Counterparty risk is often systemic, where the failure of one “leg” can result in a cascading (and compounding) situation for parties that weren’t even involved on either side of the bet to begin with. A third implication is that the market has structural risk points. Anomalies like this suggest that the institutions treat certain small-cap stocks like economic bottlenecks, (which harkens back to the days of apes believing that Gamestop was a “liquidity black hole,” of sorts). As an electrical and network engineer, this also makes me think of certain nodal problems, where a certain node, no particularly different than the others in the network, carries exponentially more importance than it appears to, due to the structure of the system as a whole. However, let me remind you of what I said earlier. This derivative activity only cooled when Gamestop’s CEO issued 75 million fresh shares into the open market, acting as a pressure release valve to the boiling cauldron. What this suggests, is that these events are correlated, deeply linked with Gamestop’s corporate situation, and are persistent, systemic concerns, not a mere bizarro situation that I’m reading too far into. To summarize the implications to the global markets, I lean towards believing that the extreme derivative behavior around Gamestop’s stock price is a hallmark of shadow banking behavior, massive price arbitrage, regulatory avoidance, hidden risk structures like those that collapsed Archegos, and fragile market structure that relies on a few over-leveraged “nodes” to function. If I am even partially right, it raises questions like: Who is holding these derivatives and exposures? Is it Archegos/Credit Suisse leftovers in the hands of UBS? Citadel? Hedge funds? Why this specific stock? This has been a grind of a read, so let me just end it here with a final thought, that I think most logical people can get behind, assuming they find the data itself compelling: If massive derivative activity happens around a small retail stock, but not around major macroeconomic events, it suggests the stock is being used as a key piece in the hidden mechanics of financial risk. It’s like finding a tiny bolt in a skyscraper that, if it breaks, sends shock waves through the building, while literal earthquakes from outside the building don’t. We tend to think that Gamestop is just another stock on the global market. I haven’t worn stockings or even tights in years, but was surprised the drugstores (CVS, Walgreen’s) near me no longer sell them. My first high school job at the mall dress code required legs to be covered by pants or stockings. $3.35 an hour and stockings were mandatory with a skirt or dress. I remember running to cvs to buy a new pair when they got a run that nail polish couldn’t help. I am glad they are no longer required. So uncomfortable and inconvenient! But, now that I’m older and my legs are uneven toned and veiny, I don’t feel comfortable showing them in a professional setting. I’d like to wear skirts to work from time to time. If the ideas are really that bad it should be trivial to civilly rebut them. Describing replacement theory as a 'bad idea' is exactly my problem. Just because he talked about in a calm manor does not mean it was civil. At some point we have to draw the line. The tone of the delivery of a so called bad idea does not make it automatically civil. Talking about it in a calm manner absolutely means it was civil. The bigger issue is that nobody seems to be able to refute the arguments contained in replacement theory. That's the only reason to ignore them and attack the morality. That's odd for an idea that is so supposedly obviously factually false. He was right about 90% of the things he said He was yes. One of the few people who just wanted to have an open conversation and debate peacefully. Which is what makes it even more sad, he wasn't spewing hate or yelling at people he was polite to basically every college student he spoke to on campus. So I live in the Valley, and honestly, I mostly watch The Valley just to see my neighborhood on screen at this point. Over the years, I’ve randomly run into nearly the entire cast. Buckle up potatoes, this one's a doozie. My husband (44M) and I (41F) got married in our early twenties. When I was younger, I had always felt pretty strongly that I didn't want kids, but my husband did and we naively thought we'd figure it out. Luckily for him, as I got older I started to feel more open to it. We eventually started trying to have kids in our mid-twenties, but after a few years and some failed fertility treatments, our doctors told us we'd probably never have kids without IVF. The issues were mainly with my husband (low/lazy swimmers), so I figured the universe was secretly saving me but I decided to stay off birth control to leave the door open. Fast forward 10 years, and I surprisingly got pregnant in my late thirties. We were beyond excited and welcomed a daughter into our family. We decided to actively try for another child and a year after our daughter was born I got pregnant again (first try!) with our son. They are now 3 and 1.5. Both our kids look like me, especially my daughter who looks exactly like I did as a child. My boyfriend just pulled up to CVS in Florida. A man approached him in the parking lot trying to sell him an iPhone 15. He accidentally hadn’t hung up the phone yet, and I heard the guy initially say $1k and it was dropped down to $300 (of course). There was an ATM right near by. He saw I was still on the phone and I was like “dude, what’re you doing? Why are you buying something in a parking lot? No”. He said “I’ll tell you later, damn”. Okay, fuck me then. He went to the ATM, bought the phone, called me back. I was like “did you take a picture of his ID? Get his license plate? Literally anything? That phone probably doesn’t even work. You just fell for a scam. Some dude just approached you in a parking lot next to an ATM and went from $1k to $300. A normal person would sell that shit on Craigslist or something”. He says no, he didn’t get any info, looks at the phone, says the screen is weird and it’s fake. Like, cmon. He’s calling the non-emergency police line now. Any other advice? Update: cops aren’t doing anything. Also, my boyfriend didn’t think it was stolen. I just asked and he said the scammer convincingly said he won it in a raffle. Oh! Another update! Original Post: July 8, 2020 Apologies as I’m on mobile. Not sure if this is the right sub for it but this is fresh off the press (happened about an hour ago). I’m a head of sales and marketing for a major property developer with 10 years of experience in the industry (several of those spent at a large competitors company - lets call them Money Homes - they are considered the epitome of luxury due to the huge price tag - this will be important later on). My team covers all of the capital and a very large portion of the country. Roll on today, since we have only recently opened up and are launching new developments for which we don’t yet have the staff, today was the interview day. Normally for those kind of positions, the person would be interviewed by the sales manager for that particular development, sales coordinator and sometimes one of the sales directors. Since it’s a bit of a track for the sales director to come in for the interview (2,5 hour train journey when we’re supposed to limit non essential travel), HR asked me to step in as new employees will be reporting to me anyway. Queue 8 applicants we have waiting. First few interviews go pleasantly well but nothing special, until we meet interviewee no. 4. Meet Annabelle. Before she comes into the room she’s sitting in the waiting area with other applicants and not only I can hear her go on about how she pretty much has the job in the bag as she’s overly qualified and the other guys are wasting their time (first mistake), then I can see her shuffling through papers at the admin desk which was left unattended (second mistake). She still doesn’t realise that our office is behind a Venetian mirror. I can see her, she cannot see me. She hears the admin come back in and scurries away back to the seat. It’s now her turn for the interview. She comes in, hands me a copy of her CV and sits down opposite myself and the other two members of my team. I look at her CV with a slight half-smile, which I think she took as a good sign so she goes off talking about her major accomplishments at different employers. She tell us that she’s actually more interested in being hired for another position at our company which she can assure me she’s more qualified for than our current employee. She then starts spewing out figures of our marketing campaigns (which have not yet been published) and advises me on the results we should expect and what our next move in terms of marketing should be. I advise her that the only positions currently open are for sales staff but asked her which one she’s specifically interested in. She mentions, wait for it - sales and marketing director. My job. My coworkers both look at me in waiting so I decide to play along. I’ve asked her what makes her more qualified than our current director. She comes back to the marketing figures point and asks me outright “how many applicants are able to predict to a certainty what results you’ll achieve” and then leads into a major point on her CV - Money Homes. So I started asking a little more about her position there, what was her area of responsibility, how long she has worked there etc. She starts off telling this long, rehearsed story of how she started there as a negotiator few years back and worked her way up to associate director (fancy name for managers responsible for more than one project) and how she eventually became sales and marketing director but is looking to leave so discretion is of utmost importance. At that point I couldn’t hold it in anymore, I really wanted to let her carry on but I just burst out laughing and asked her to leave. She just gets very confused and starts asking what she said that has offended me. With the biggest grin on my face I then said “it’s one thing hearing you talk down to other applicants when you’re supposedly looking for upper management position, watch you steal confidential information from my admins desk (while pulling the two pages out of her hand - our marketing reports) and telling me and my colleagues that you can do my job better than me by lying to me about your experience?!”, she gets offended and starts going off at me that I know nothing about her and she did not lie about her experience and how would I have known that anyway. “Annabelle, the reason I know you’re lying is because I was the sales and marketing director at Money Homes during the years you have described and not only do I know you were not in managerial position, I know that you were not even part of the department (even if you did work there) as the department was made of 42 employees all of which I knew by name. I recommend that if you do indeed work there, you contact your director as I will be filing a grievance against you for stealing confidential documents from their main competitor”. Her face went pale as a sheet of cheap toilet paper, she turns on her heel, rips her CV out of my colleagues hands and runs out the door (like does she really think we did not keep her details on email when she sent the doc through?!). For those of you that have not read the original story, have a look on my profile first. So... Annabelle. As you can imagine, I was not best pleased with her and her interview. I didn’t do anything about it for about a week, and to be fair I wasn’t actually going to raise a grievance after all but so it happened that Money Homes and my company agave decided on a joint venture for a future regeneration project so I was going into a meeting with them a week ago on Wednesday. The area sales and marketing manager for MH arrived about 15 mins before the rest of our meeting and since we’ve known each other for a while, I retold him the story while catching up. He knew exactly who I was talking about even before I mentioned Annabelle’s name and lo and behold - she DOES NOT work for Money Homes, and was never even employed by them. Turns out she is a subcontractor who works for a small independent estate agency, to whom Money Homes have been paying a set fee for accompanying weekend viewings local to them. That would explain why she knew a fair bit about their processes (as she reports client information back to them) but wouldn’t have known that I was also employed there at some stage. This also means that the incident with the marketing reports doesn’t really mean shit as they’re not a competitor and it’s not the kind of info other companies would be willing to pay for (useful but not priceless) - so there’s no grievance to be raised. So even though I cannot be nearly as petty as I was hoping to be, considering how small our working world is - the story has spread. I can’t see her getting employed by any of the larger house builders in the nearest future. The funniest thing about this is, my colleagues have come across this story on Reddit (after I’ve removed certain personal details) and have been sending it to me with hopes of working out who Annabelle and Money Homes are (like I said, it’s a small world). I have been acting shocked and giggling under my breath every time I hear it xD NEW UPDATE Post: April 29, 2023 (Almost 3 years later) I’m not sure if anybody will remember this saga but it’s been a couple of years. My original post is here and this is the update. I’ve recently been having issues at my workplace and I’ve decided to move on. I’ve started at my new job just over 2 weeks ago. It’s the same position, just for a different company. Imagine my surprise when I realised that Annabelle is an existing employee at the new place and part of the team who will be reporting to me. In my first week on the job, Annabelle came into my office (having clearly remembered me and the embarrassing occurrence that was her interview few years ago) and we’ve had a very good chat. She apologised profusely and admitted that she thought everyone lies on their CV and she was so desperate to leave the job she was employed at at the time, she wanted to make herself stand out. She’s actually a very sweet girl and an integral cog in a very well oiled machine that is the new company I’ve started at. I’ve explained to her that while it is true, most people do lie or exaggerate on their CVs, they tend to lie about much smaller things (like GCSE results) and not about running a competitors sales and marketing department. I’ve told her there’s no bad blood between us and as long as she’s doing her job and doing it well, I will endeavour to support her as much as I possibly can. I’ve made her promise that if she ever considers leaving, to come to me first and we will work on her CV and covering letter together. Sleep inertia is the feeling of grogginess or fatigue when you wake up in the morning regardless of how long you slept. It's what makes you want to hit the snooze button, call in a sick day, and go back to sleep. I suffered from this for the longest time and it multiplied 10 fold when I started working from home as I couldn't get going (feeling awake and alert) for hours and caffeine only had a minor impact. For the longest I just thought I was not a morning person or there was something wrong with me as I generally get 6-8 hours on average but still wake up tired. Then I learned about sleep inertia and how to counter it and I haven't looked back since. Do these things to combat sleep inertia: Use a Sun Lamp Alarm. The gradual feel of sunlight on your skin triggers a waking mechanism and gives you a positive general sense of well being. This was a true game changer for me (this is the one I use as third party products are hit or miss on amazon). Drink a glass of water! I know it sounds simple, but many people find that starting their day by drinking cold water helps wake them up. After all, dehydration (which, again, naturally occurs when you sleep) can make you tired and dizzy, according to the National Library of Medicine. Take a cold shower to increase blood flow, neurotransmitters and respiration. All of these can give you a burst of energy and even improve your mood. You don't have to take a full cold shower as you can just stick your arm in the cold water, up to the shoulder. Immediately go outside and get fresh air. If the sun isn't out yet then if possible go for a quick walk (take your dog if you have one). You don't need to walk long, 5-10 minutes will be enough to kick you out of that state. There are other things you can do that I won't list as they are very common (play music, go for a workout, etc.). Anyway, I hope you find this helpful. Edit: I wanted to provide some follow-up information regarding the sunrise alarm clock based on the comments and messages I've received: Regarding the Sunrise alarm clock: I know some people are skeptical, but I truly feel passionate about the quality of life improvements you get from it. In the past if I wanted to get up at 5am to either go into work early or go to the gym I would need my girlfriend to pour cold water on me (which did not happen often as she also struggled with getting up early) and my inability to wake up also impacted her as the sound of my alarm going off (because I kept snoozing it) messed with her sleep cycle. Since adding this therapy tool things have changed and now I'm generally awake and alert within a few minutes of the alarm going off (5:05am the latest). One benefit from the version I have is that you can set 2 alarms at once (I use the first one she uses the second) and remember you don't have to get the most expensive one as there are others that range from $20 - $150 (the higher end models have things like Bluetooth and syncs with alexa). I just went with my model because of brand recognition (Phillips), but there's even a cheaper one one by the same company as mine that seems just as good. How the alarm works is pretty simple. When there's 2 minutes to go the alarm goes into it's first state* (red sun). When there's 1 minute to go you get the yellow sun and at alarm time it goes into it's full state. You can also add relaxing sounds to the alarm (like birds chirping) if you'd like. Here's an example of the alarm with sound added. You don't have to take my word for it, here are a few folks who also believe in it: NYTimes, inverse, Self, Influencer Recommendation, General Reviewer. Also, I initially put that the sunrise alarm tricked your body into producing vitamin d as I took that information directly from a product listing. However after doing additional research I cannot find any consistent evidence backing that statement. So I removed that information from my initial post and I strongly recommend getting a therapy lamp/light (also called a Seasonal Affective Disorder Lamp [SAD Lamp for short]) if you need help getting your daily dose of vitamin D (let's be honest, we could all use a little help every once and awhile). I keep one on my office desk and another near my couch in the living room. Normally I would get the daily vitamin D needed by going for a run or walking my dog, but the last two years I've been staying inside more since we have been living through the walking dead. For your daily use all you need is to have the light on for 45 minutes, but I personally just leave it on when I'm that area of my house. All of these charts, and dozens and dozens of others have the same chart patterns as GME or inverse if they are insider owned by hedges. Look at 5 yr charts and see the changes over time. Also, Circuit city was acquired and tanked by Highfields. And many, many others are currently involved. Literally, EVERYTHING that stands in the way of a long bet by these hedges are SHORTED. Wanna know what's even scarier? All of the money maker stocks connected to these hedges only started printing cash AFTER the 2008 crash- almost as if they pivoted their strategy to this. ​ WHAT THIS MEANS TLDR: What appears to me, is that several hedge funds have placed large bets on their precious money making stocks, and have over the years been systematically bankrupting, manipulating, and sabotaging the competition of the acquisitions being made for their babies. Target wants a pharmacy? destroy rite aid, place calls on CVS. Netflix wants gaming? Short GME. Amazon wants to buy movie studio? short the movies. Amazon bought a grocery chain? prevent their competition from ever growing. Rinse, repeat. GME is the one that stood against them and is fucking them up royally. However, what this means is that there is not one bomb. There are dozens of mini-GME's littered around the market. If GME goes off, the systematic margin calling will cause mini-short squeezes all over on these stocks. If you check recent SEC ownership filings, these hedges have been reducing or closing their positions in these shorted stocks like Rite Aid and Lowes (and many, many others). They are disarming these mini-bombs before the big one goes. The longer we hold, the more we buy, the closer they get a cluster bomb. We have not one Asteroid called GME heading to the Earth, but a meteor shower of smaller rocks following quickly behind. We will not have an entire market implosion. if the GME squeeze is an event that occurs over weeks, we will have the long-manipulated stocks experiencing a sudden boon with these squeezes like GME and AMC have and have benefitted from, breathing new life into these failing companies through the expense of banks, hedges, and the US Federal govt. My [21M] girlfriend [19F] quit her job at a grocery store a couple of months ago after her best friend decided to unfriend her. She was pretty sad about it and kind of understood why. I never really got the full story other that they lived together and she admits to have been taking advantage of her financially sometimes and being rude because she was tired from work. Needless to say, the friendship ended, she got all depressed, quit her job (literally just didn't show up ever again, and this is also my work, btw). I still work here as a cart boy. I make min wage and work 35 hrs a week on average. She doesn't have the best relationship w her parents, so she lives with me and my parents. My mom doesn't rlly like her but my girlfriend does help around sometimes. She makes me dinner some days and does some of the laundry. She decided she wanted to camgirl, and she's made some but not much. I wasn't comfortable with the idea, but we needed money and she didn't wanna work. My parents just let us live there but we pay our own food and I pay my mom some money in rent, not nearly the cost of a real apartment. I pay her phone bill sometimes when she doesn't have enough and buy her food and myself food as well. She's spent a lot of her time getting high or drunk (I like to get high too but she's home all the time so) and she worked for 2 days at a store near us and blamed it on them when she wouldn't work anymore. Anyway, I didn't have much money, given I get about 300-280 a week (my store is a union and we have to pay union fees weekly). I gave her some money. I don't remember if I told her it was food, I probably forgot, but she spent it on Make Up and sent me pics about it. I got furious! She spent all our food money on MAKE UP at CVS. I told her I was sick of this and that she needs to get a real job with REAL income because I cannot continue paying her bills, mine, food, and all this other stuff! She started crying and said I was insensitive and an asshole because she's depressed and I said she could just get a job then afford therapy session and how I'm depressed too but I still go to work. This has been happening for 6 months. We've only been dating for 9. Am I really an asshole?
