I’m at war with my neighbor.
I live in Appalachia. I’ve always lived here. I’ve always been aware of the Haints that are my neighbors. They are aware of me too. When I was young, they used to terrify me. Eyes within the trees, whispers that sound like human voices mixed with the howling winds. When the birds go silent, you become acutely aware of the fact you are trespassing on your neighbors property and you are not welcome. Unlike people, Haints don’t use guns to defend themselves. As I grew older, I grew a deep appreciation for them. This has been their home much longer than it has been mine. The Appalachian mountains are older than we can dream of, older than bones and even the sea. When you’re quiet and still, you can speak to the bones. The ground itself talks in a voice with no sound, communicating to your soul, not your conscious mind. When I first bought my own property with my husband, I made it clear to the Haints I was going to inhabit this property as it was my own. I gave them gifts of milk and sugar, woven baskets and carved charms set with the intentions and phrases my Mamaw taught, passed down from the ten generations my family had lived here. Then I set my wards. Nails taken from the corner boards of my house salted and blessed with my own blood. My husband isn’t from here originally so he thought it was a bit of an extreme response, but he didn’t protest. He declined my offers to add him to the wards. I wasn’t pleased with that. I’d no intention of forcing him though. He didn’t believe my stories for the first year. It wasn’t until the things in our house would go missing only to be shortly returned after I served up honey milk to the Haint living with us that he started to believe. He never confirmed it aloud but the change in his disposition was clear. He began to fear the things in the woods. I told him time and time again there was no fear to be had as long as we respected them the same they respected us. Yet he still refused to be out past sundown. We no longer hosted bonfires or watched the fireflies after the trout bellied sky sank beneath the horizon. I understood the fear he held. The paralysis of realizing you are being watched cautiously by things beyond your comprehension. The apex predator is aware you are stepping on its territory, and it may pounce at any moment. It wasn’t until the screams started that I became nervous as well. I’d heard the screams before, almost woman-like, yet oddly inhuman. It had been many years since I’d felt the dread they inspired, the need to flee. My husband froze, still as a rabbit on its haunches, waiting to see what the hound will do. I guided his arm inside and locked the door, salting the windows and door. I was confident in my wards, but that did not mean I was somehow stronger than whatever this was. As far as I knew, the wards could be completely useless. The Haints run by their own rules. The words of my father from childhood stuck in my head. “That ain’t how a woman screams. Go inside.” He said it with such a serious face, as if he was warning me, not just keeping me away from a fox or a mountain lion. When we heard the deer screaming in agony two days later, his eyes darkened and he turned his back to the woods with resolve. He kept the shotgun by the door for a month after that. Something I was now doing too. We lived that way for six months. This Haint, unwilling to live amicably with me like so many others, terrorized my husband the most. He woke up screaming most nights, some night terror breaking his mind slowly but surely. I was beginning to grow angry. I had made good faith offerings, burnt meat in a fire just outside my bounds, honey bread and homemade meeds, yet the Haint accepted none of it. All was spoiled and rotten by morning, a rude rejection and a statement to me. It only stoked the flames in my own soul. This was my home just as it was the Haints and I would not allow it to terrorize my loved one. It began killing my chickens. That was when I decided it was war. I responded in earnest, upping my wards tenfold, saying nightly prayers, calling upon the friendly neighbors for aid. I did not like calling upon them. It always came at a cost. I was growing more rapidly aware of the fact that if I did not, this Haint would kill us. It was not content to only feed off the discomfort, it craved the taste of flesh. My chickens were not a satisfactory substitute. I saw it for the first time three years into us living here. It stood at the edge of my wards, careful not to step over them, yet seemingly testing the bounds. Its appearance is difficult to describe but I will do my best. Deer are prey animals. Their eyes are set on the side of their heads to give them near complete 360 degree vision. Their legs are made for running and hold immense ability to spring into jumps over creek beds or brush as they escape hunters. This beast did not hold those features. Its eyes were front set, pitch black with absolutely no glint as the porch light hit them. It stood taller at the shoulder than a normal deer, nearly as tall as the willow it towered near. Its mouth was wrong, slitted and barely masking the shape of sharpened teeth. It moved its head like a cat, cocked its head to the side like a dog, chittered like a fox, stepped like a mountain lion. What I found most uncanny, were its legs. They were not the slender, graceful legs of a deer. They were muscular. The legs of a predator, not prey. It pawed the ground with a ferocity that spoke to its power, one I did not want to cross. The antlers upon its head were sharper than nature intended, the shedded velvet coated with dried blood. I suppose this could’ve meant it sheds its antlers like a normal deer, but deep in my bones I knew they were attached to its skull like horns. I did something then that many would consider stupid. My husband was deep asleep, tired after a days work and exhausted from the ongoing torment. So, as quietly as I could, I slipped out the back door and walked to it. It seemed surprised I had chosen this route. It took several steps back, cautiously watching my hands as if I were going to pull a revolver and silver bullets from my pockets. I did not. I held the leftover pork from that nights meal. I placed it upon the ground and pushed it with a branch across the ward lines. It regarded me with interest, unsure of what my motive was. For the first time, it bowed its head and ate. I took it as a sign of truce, at least in that moment. I spoke to it. Introduced myself, my lineage, introduced it to the bones of my kin who now walk the deep earth of the mountain, same as the Haints. I asked it as simply as possible, “What do you seek out of this?” Its head shifted and clicked, the teeth in its mouth showing as if it was grinning. “I want him.” The words took me aback. My husband. The outsider who had done no conceivable harm to anything here, who had been respectful as I’d told him to be, who’d followed every rule. “Why?” I did not bother to hide the shock or animosity in my voice. “How well do you truly know the man you have bound yourself to? How much do you know of his history, of the path his kin have passed to him? How confident are you that man is a good one? You will find me when you decide. That is, if it is not too late.” The voice that spoke to me did not come from vocal chords. It traveled up my spine, the voice of the grave dirt beneath my feet seeking revenge of ages. It regarded me one final time before its shadowy form sank into the darkest part of the tree line. I chewed on its words for several days. Told myself that it was meaning to make me paranoid, distrustful of my husband. If that was the intent, it was working. I could not hope to view him the same way. I watched his every move and reconsidered everything he’d told me. I watched as he snapped at me over small things, something I’d once blamed on the Haint tormenting us. I re-examined the ways he drank, unable to sleep or feel much without it. I considered the way he chopped wood as if it had done something to him, an intense anger just underneath the surface. I listened to the words he spoke in his sleep, realizing they were not words in response to a Haint, but someone from his past. I began to wonder if the Haint was his reckoning. I spent a month pondering what to do. I sat by my ward lines night after night, waiting for the Haint to speak to me once again. It never came. I could hear it, feel it just beyond the capabilities of my sight, even felt as if I made eye contact with it a few times. He’s starting to become paranoid of me as well. I feel his eyes upon me when my back is turned. I see the way his knuckles go white as he grasps knives at dinner time. I see the way his jaw tightens when I speak. I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve been fighting the wrong war. If the isolation I once considered sanctuary will become my grave. I broke my ward last night. It was on pure impulse. My Mamaw would scold me if she could see the way I went about it. Dug it up under the cover of night and felt the cold wash of the surrounding neighbors overtake me. I heard the sounds of the stag chittering with that fox-like voice. Then I went to bed. I do not know how long I have until this war ends. I do not know which side I am on. All I know is I clutch my protection necklace much more tightly and I no longer sleep at night. I watch and whisper to the Haints I call my neighbors. submitted by /u/I_go_by_kk to r/nosleep [link] [comments]

Chews for a hazarderous prone dog with death wish?
Hey all, As the title reads, one of my dogs had a death wish and swallows just about anything she can. No chew, only swallow. She comes close to choking on her own food if i didn't have a slow feeder, and this is now proving almost impossible to find her a chew that isn't a choking/impacting risk too. I was doing frozen RMBs once a week (beef neck/pork neck/ox tail usually) but she was swallowing the chunks of bones, like golf ball size pieces, and throwing them up a day later. The same thing has happened to the yak chews I feed, I've tried using the Jughead toy and everything to slow her down but just now she managed to get the chew OUT of the jughead and swallowed a 3-4 inch piece. I'm now terrified she's gonna risk impacting herself zzzz. 🥲 Bully sticks are not an affordable option for me due to them lasting less than 10 minutes. My other dog isn't as big of a chewer so it takes her several days on and off to finish a yak chew. But my death wishing dog can go through a jumbo in 2-3 hours straight. It's because she's eating large chunks off it rather than chewing it slowly. I'm desperate to find something that works that can allow her to get that chew game on minus the risk of swallowing large chunks. I've looked into Ugly chews but those are a bit too out of my price range. If there are even homemade things I can make her, I will! I cook their food daily so I wouldn't mind the extra steps, I'm just at a lose as to what else to try that isnt inherently a risk to her. I'm open to everything as long as it's natural- i no longer use plastic or Nylah anything. Thing's I've tried already: Antlers Yak chews Honest Chew Bully sticks (don't last) Raw hide alternatives (don't last) Wood chews, real and manmade toys Nylah toys Multiple chew toysb(she has little interest in chewing toys themselves) Puzzle toys (doesn't last or gets frustrated and leaves lol). submitted by /u/V3mo to r/DogAdvice [link] [comments]

I crocheted this hat for myself (and I love it) but all I get is grief for it
I don’t know if I just love this hat because I spent hours making it with my hands or if it actually looks nice, and sometimes strangers do give me compliments about it. It’s getting a bit pilly because it’s a few years old now, and my dog chewed on it once or twice lol. Even still, it’s warm and comfy as ever. But the main issue is that most people I know in my actual life just rag on me for wearing it all the time. They say stuff like: “Oh…the Russian prince hat again.” “I figured you would’ve thrown that thing out by now.” “You know I can get you another beanie if you need one, right?” Posting this partially to vent and commiserate, but also curious if any of you get similar gruff about your own homemade garments. Thanks for your time! submitted by /u/jesusgottago to r/crochet [link] [comments]

Looking for advice for dental chews for dog with kidney disease
I'm looking for some dental chews, either bought or homemade recipes, that are low protein, sodium, and phosphorous. I have an older dog who has early kidney disease and can't digest those three well, and every dental chew I've found either has too much sodium or too much protein. I did see a recipe for soaking carrots in bone broth and freezing them, I'm just worried my pup will chip a tooth or something. submitted by /u/OldTownUli to r/DogAdvice [link] [comments]

Free, Easy, Homemade Dog Toys - What do your dogs like?
I used to buy expensive toys for my Brittany, Greta. I bought cool looking toys marketed to me constantly on Instagram. I bought seasonal plush toys. You name it, I bought it. It was impulsive and none of them were as well liked as this homemade toy. This is my dog's favorite toy by a mile... it's just a soda bottle with a knotted strand from some long-since demolished rope toy pulled through it. Here's how I make this easy toy: grab a soda bottle remove the label, the lid, and the little plastic ring that connects to the lid use a razor and cut a small hole in the bottom of the bottle (not too big) knot a rope pull that rope through the bottom of your soda bottle go have some fun with your pup! *Be careful with the razor, obviously. **Watch your pup to make sure they're not eating any plastic and recycle the thing when it starts to get too chewed up, obviously. Greta loves this toy so much that if I'm drinking a bottle of Diet Coke she start barking excitedly at me when I'm about two-thirds through. I kid you not! What are your favorite cheap, easy, homemade dog toys??? (I am updating with ideas from comments below - please keep them coming!): deer shed / antler (good for finding and chewing) animal skull (good for finding and chewing) bamboo (good for tug of war) playing "find it" by having them sit and kinda watch you hide their food before letting them go find it (good puzzle and slower eating) milk bottles (good for chewing) animal hide scraps from a local taxidermist, tied to the end of a lunge whip cut off the bottom hems of denim pants (good for chewing) submitted by /u/Ian_Atkins to r/DogAdvice [link] [comments]

Where to buy Dog Chew Toys
Finding the perfect playthings for our furry friends can sometimes feel overwhelming. With so many options available, how do you know which dog chew toys are worth buying? In this guide, we're here to help you navigate those options and ensure you provide your pup with the best! Why Dog Chew Toys Matter Every dog deserves an exciting array of toys, especially chew toys. Here’s why they are essential: Dental Health: Chewing helps to keep your dog's teeth clean and gums healthy. Boredom Buster: Dog chew toys can keep your pup entertained and help reduce destructive behavior. Stress Relief: Chewing can soothe anxious dogs, providing comfort during storms or separations. Physical Activity: Playing with chew toys encourages exercise, which is vital for your dog's overall health. These are just some of the fantastic benefits dog chew toys offer our beloved companions. But where can you find the best selection? Let's explore some options! Local Pet Stores: A Treasure Trove of Dog Chew Toys One of the first places you should consider is your local pet store. Here's why: Wide Variety: Most pet stores will stock numerous brands and types of dog chew toys. Expert Advice: Staff members can help guide you to the best choices for your dog's size and chewing habits. Immediate Gratification: You can take your new toys home the same day! Before you go, make a list of what you’re looking for in dog chew toys: durability, size, or even a specific material, such as rubber or rope. Your pup deserves the very best! Click for Details Online Shopping: Convenience at Your Fingertips If you're the type to shop from the comfort of your couch, online shops are an excellent option for dog chew toys. Here are some advantages: Endless Choices: Websites offer a much larger selection than local stores. Price Comparisons: You can easily find the best deals and discounts. Customer Reviews: See what other dog owners are saying to make informed choices. Some popular online places for dog chew toys include: Amazon: A wide selection and often great deals. Here’s how: Simple DIY Ideas: Old T-Shirts: Braid strips of fabric into ropes for a fun tug-of-war toy. Tennis Balls: Cut a small slit and fill it with treats for a puzzle toy. Frozen Treats: Freeze beef broth in muffin tins with some toys for a cool chew for hot days. Creating your own dog chew toys can not only save you some cash but also give you the satisfaction of crafting something special for your pup! Eco-Friendly Options: A Good Choice for You and Your Pup Many pet owners are becoming environmentally conscious, and thankfully, there's a growing selection of eco-friendly dog chew toys on the market. Here are some perks: Sustainable Materials: Look for toys made from recycled or sustainably sourced materials. Healthier Choices: Non-toxic materials keep your dog safe and healthy. Support brands committed to creating eco-conscious products. You’ll help ensure a healthier planet for future pets! Click for Details Don't Forget to Check for Size and Durability When selecting dog chew toys, size and durability are key. Pay attention to the chewing habits of your furry friend to pick the perfect toy! Conclusion: Time to Go Toy Shopping! Is this tartar on my dog’s teeth cause for concern?
Hi everyone. My dog has bad breath and lately her teeth have been accumulating a lot more tartar, despite her chewing consistently on dehydrated and natural bones. I’ve mentioned this to my vet last year, and again last month, showed her pics from my dog’s teeth and also mentioned the below signs: she is reactive to dogs and cats and anxious in general when on walks She has separation anxiety She sometimes doesn’t want harder chews She is very sensitive to loud noises She drops her kibble and picks it up again sometimes Sometimes we feed her homemade cooked food and she starts to pick between some of the ingredients (for example she keeps avoiding rice) She has bad breath We don’t have a consistent teeth brushing routine yet (working on it) Went through 3 months of plaque off but don’t think it did anything My vet said that judging by everything else and the little tartar she has (which she has only been able to see in pictures) is not cause for concern and doesn’t think we need to go through all the trouble of sedating her to do an x-ray and dental cleaning. We recently had an appointment with a behavioral vet to start her on meds for anxiety, I mentioned the concern with her teeth and this vet has also dismissed it and said it shouldn’t be causing her any pain or behavioral changes. I’m going to ask for a second opinion from another vet just to be sure, but wanted to know if anyone else’s dog has had dental cleaning this young and with less or more tartar? I didn’t want to sedate her and put her through dental cleaning if not necessary, but I’m also concerned with some of the behavioral changes she had lately, especially when she is so much food motivated. submitted by /u/Natural_Pea_3336 to r/DogAdvice [link] [comments]

looking to add additional aging-support nutrition into homemade dog food for my 9-10 year old Blue Tick Beagle.
I have a Blue tick beagle that is approaching double digits in age. She is still fairly healthy (except for her teefers- she has badly receded gums and some have fallen out, but that's another topic). I make her food myself using grocery store ground turkey, brown rice, and mixed veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, carrots). She LOVES it and it seems to have had some benefits in regards to her energy, BMs and even skin (she used to chew herself so badly that she had thinning hair patches on her back, along with scaly/greasy skin- that has largely cleared up now that she's on homemade food). However, she's aging and I want to be proactive about it. I used to have a beagle mutt who lived to seventeen(!) years old and she dealt with arthritis and joint pain for the last few years of her life. A vet recommended I switch to a dog food that contained extra levels of glucosamine and Omega fatty acids, and the difference it made for her was huge! where before the aches were obvious in how she walked and careful we had to be when picking her up, after a month on the food she was back to sprinting around the yard, ears and tongue flapping in the breeze. So, obviously I have seen firsthand the benefits of ensuring appropriate nutrition for senior dogs. I would like to start including ingredient's in Molly's food that provide the nutrition she needs to ensure aging joint health and stave off arthritis and other age-related conditions, but I'm not sure what ingredients I should include. I've considered blueberries for their antioxidant properties. I've also considered tuna or salmon for the omega fatty acids, but I'm worried about the heavy metal content of the fish- what is fine for humans may not be for a dog that weighs a tenth of what we do. I am also considering flax seed for the omega fatty acids- that's what Blue Buffalo uses, but am not sure what ratio/how much of the seed would be appropriate for a 22-25 pound dog. Does anyone here have any suggestions? submitted by /u/sunward_Lily to r/DogAdvice [link] [comments]

TIFU by eating 2k calories worth of tortilla chips not one, but TWO days in a row.
A year ago I begun to try exercise and watching what I eat, mainly calories. Having realized I was pretty overweight during high school (175lbs at 5'8). Having a shitload of free time as a dude in my early 20s this should be an important habit to form before life actually hits me (As my older co workers put it). I’ve now reached a healthy weight range (140lbs) and I’m now experimenting. Last Friday (August 23rd, 2024 for you folks from the future) I bought a 0.9 pound bag of tortilla chips from my local supermarket, Fresh by Brookshire. A location in Northern Texas. They were called “Housemade hatch tortilla chips”, clearly store brand, store original. Had a variant called “Original”. https://imgur.com/a/Hv8zRvd What drew me to these chips, as you can see: were the macros. I’ve only weighed my food recently and have learned alot about food, caloric density, the way western society can encourage it. And slowly gravitated to less calorie dense foods, not all at once, but gradually. I feel I have a good grasp of the weight and volume of foods, 360 calories for 170 grams of chips? Large, wide chips? That take a long ass time to chew. That’s almost a 2:1 ratio, where most Doritos and nachos have a 4:1 ratio at best. I could fill a large bowl with these, and a smaller bowl can get up to 80 grams (170). That in addition to okay protein and high fiber, I can snack AND get something out of it! it sounded too good to be true! It was… As snacks on Friday, I ate a total of 250 grams, half the bag. Should have totaled up to 530 calories. On top of a chicken wrap, potato wedges, and roughly 300 grams of carrots. That night my stomach felt terrible, but I just chalked it up to the amount of fiber I ate that day. Roughly 60. Woke up the next day (August 24th) not feeling particularly hungry until after my walk. Ate a banana. Then finished off that bag of chips. Which should have weighed about 404 grams in total (Ate about 150) which should have been under 350 calories. Took a ride with my father after the gym. I noticed that despite eating 460 calories up to that point, lifting and 400 calories worth of cardio didn’t make me feel that tired or depleted. He noticed I bought the chips and wanted to try some himself, I said one pack was fine but he insisted I get two, and when I told him the first pack was gone he said I should get three. On his credit card. Despite me saying we didn’t need three Did that. Still didn’t feel that hungry until a bit later, ate more carrots. then the chips… In truth I only assumed I ate about a bag and a half that day. Maybe more. 700 grams in total that day. That’s 1500 calories of chips! Pretty insane but hey, I tracked it all, I’m still in a calorie deficit. I only ate small fruits and veggies that day aside from the chips. Worst case scenario, I worked out that day. And one bad day wasn’t going to ruin me. They have fiber and protein after all, that’s good for you! Then I posted about these chips on a subreddit. Got all sorts of flake, “You sweet summer child”. “Dude come on!” With no elaboration. Until a kind user told me he couldn’t find shit about these tortilla chips online, which prompted me to search and have the same realization. Another way to check, another kind user pointed out, the fat/protein/carb ratio. Essentially 9, 4, and 4 calories a gram each. I did the math already. The label describes a serving of 85 grams of chips, not 170, as 360 calories. The label was off by 100 fucking percent! My stomach was screaming at me the whole time about this, I assumed it was the fiber, I assumed it was just cuz I ate a ton of chips, even if they were “Good” chips. I put more stock in a government label than my body. Hell, the government probably doesn’t even know about these. Like I said, I can’t find shit about these online. They don’t exist in any calorie tracking app, last I checked not even the fresh website lists these. In reality, I did not eat 530 calories of tortilla chips on Friday. I did not eat 1500 grams of tortilla chips on Saturday. I ate 1000 calories of tortilla chips on Friday, and 3000 calories of chips on Saturday!!! Because of an inaccurate label! TLDR: I ate a shitload of homemade tortilla chips from Fresh by Brookshire because an inaccurate nutrition label led me to believe they were worth half the calories they actually were! Instead of eating 2000 across two days, I ate 4000 across two days on top of my meal and fruits/vegetables! Edit: Forgot to add, this morning, I did report this to corporate office (Accidentally saved their number instead of that store) and they’re “Handling it” but I got something to study for, been putting it off too long honestly. Need to lock in. Edit 2 (8/28/2024) seeing a lot of people claiming I wasn’t overweight at 175 fucking pounds. This was me in 2021 when I was between 168-175lbs, when I was sedentary, didn’t eat well, and didn’t exercise. This is back when I was much more dependent on my parents and followed my morbidly obese father’s advice on “Exercise” which was just a hundred push ups everyday and to load up on hot dogs, burgers, fries, and cornbread to “Bulk up”. As you can see, I was not built like the Black Panther. I was more like Homer Simpson. submitted by /u/Nubian_Cavalry to r/tifu [link] [comments]

Any homemade recipes for dogs with pancreatitis?
Hi everyone, I am looking for recipes for homemade dog food or treats that is good for dogs with pancreatitis because I am helping my aunt who has a 5 lb Yorkshire Terrier who was diagnosed with pancreatitis less than a year ago and I believed that he developed pancreatitis due to not eating his normal dog food (Hill’s Science) and only eats dog treats which I think the ones he used to eat is very high fattening. Currently, he is eating the SquarePet Low Fat Dog Food, The Honest Kitchen Dehydrated Grain Free Chicken, and for treats he eats plain Cheerios (not the healthiest but its better then any high fattening dog treats) as well as a Vital Essential Salmon Skin Chew. Any advice or information about caring a dog with pancreatitis are welcome. submitted by /u/Lunar_Flower96 to r/AskVet [link] [comments]

Homemade dog chews/treats?
Does anyone make their own dog chews/treats? It seems my dogs will eat anything that comes from the kitchen, but it's usually inhaled. I would like it if they had dog chews that are healthy and dog appropriate. Do you have a dehydrator or is a multifunctional thing with that function usually good enough? What do you make? submitted by /u/No_Wrangler_7814 to r/coonhounds [link] [comments]

My homemade dog food recipe 😋
My recipe for my 2 boxers. One is a 3 year old, 75 pound, neutered male. The other, a 2.5 year old, 65 pound, spayed female. My male has had numerous digestive issues and is allergic to dairy and gluten. This makes enough for 4 meals of approx 3 cups per meal. They get fed 2x a day, for a total of about 6 cups, give or take. And they lick their bowls, trays and floor clean every meal and want more. They are not overweight, they are healthy boxers that are very active. Cooked ingredients- 3 lbs hamburger 80/20 - browned/drained/rinsed 20 ounces chicken livers - browned 5 scrambled eggs - plain, not cooked in anything 1.5 Cups rice - cooked Raw ingredients- 1 can sardines in oil 3 finely crushed egg shells 1 package frozen spinach 1 package frozen peas, carrots & corn 2.5 cups blueberries 1 large apple - grated Each meal they get 1/4 cup canned pumpkin on top, as well as a chicken heart and a chicken gizzard. In the mornings they get 3 (because of their size) peanut butter flavor vitamin chews. Since I started this 3 months ago, my male has had no digestive issues. No more diarrhea. Neither dog has the notorious boxer gas problem. Am I missing anything?? submitted by /u/Leather_Note76 to r/HomemadeDogFood [link] [comments]

Long lasting homemade dog treats ideas? Because shops are a rip off!!!
Hey, as title says, I am sick of paying £26 per kg for dog treats when, for example, human grade chicken breast is £6 per kilo. Can anyone recommend long lasting homemade dog treats which come in fairly cheap? I'm ok if there's a small amount of prep involved. Mainly looking for a very common treat to use for training but any ideas for homemade chews would be great too. submitted by /u/Senordave12 to r/dogs [link] [comments]

MIL's Proof That I Hate Her: "The **** Pies"
Disclaimer: I curse. Hi again! I wasn't expecting so much attention on my last post with it being so "tame" compared to others' experiences. But I guess it happens to be pretty relatable for a lot of people here, so here I am back with Instance 2. For those just tuning in (feel free to read my last few posts), the recap is my MIL has lamented to my SIL that I dislike/hate her and gave 3 specific instances as proof, and SIL relayed these instances to Hubby (which Hubby immediately shut down)! The only thing is... in all 3 instances, she has underhandedly started petty shit with me, Hubbs has put her firmly back in her lane, but somehow MIL is the victim in EACH scenario. Can you imagine??? So, without further adieu, here is Instance #2 in which I personally refer back to as "The Fucking Pies." So this one took place less than a year ago, Thanksgiving 2020. Our area was doing well, restrictions were lessened, our tier had dropped, and small gatherings of 2-3 households was okay. We'd quarantined like crazy, BIL's family quarantined 24/7, so we felt very much okay when we were invited for Thanksgiving. MIL and FIL were invading visiting to see the grandbabies. Cool. Well, Momma raised me not to attend get togethers empty handed, so I offered to make the mashed potatoes and Hubbs asked if I'd make my fresh baked pumpkin pie that he loves. So we let SIL2 know I've got the mashed potatoes and pumpkin pies for dessert. She says awesome, all is good. So flash forward to the day before Thanksgiving. I take off work early, pick up some last minute supplies, and get to work on the pies and mash. All is dandy, I enjoy taking some time to bake and cook. As Im loading the last pie into the oven, SIL2 texts me to give me a heads up that MIL has ALSO decided to bake pumpkin pie. Ummmm, didnt you tell her I was making the pies? SIL2 says yes, MIL was informed I was bringing fresh baked pumpkin pies.. ooooookay, well 1 extra pie isnt a big deal, right? Plenty for everyone! Who wants to guess how many pumpkin pies she chose to make? 8. Not one, not two, not three. EIGHT. EIGHT. FUCKING. PUMPKIN. PIES. Ya'll.... I calmly put the phone down for a minute, closed my eyes and counted to 10... Then promptly called Hubbs, and asked him if he was aware that his mother has made EIGHT FUCKING PUMPKIN PIES. All I remember Hubbs responding with was a "...what the fuck... Okay I'll handle it." I told him she KNEW I was baking pumpkin pies, and if she was that fucking adamant about making pumpkin pies, I could have made something else, or better yet, I could have NOT taken time off work. (Something Hubbs and all my loved ones know is that I work a lot, but I actually ENJOY working. I own a small company, which I have been fighting like HELL to keep afloat since the big shut down. So I took time off to make these damn pies, and you go ahead and make EIGHT.) I will admit that I lost my shit. The poor dogs hightailed it upstairs; Im bitching about just throwing the damn pies away and WTF is his moms fucking problem; why should I be taking time out of my day and my job to do something only to have her pull this shit and waste my time and energy; why EIGHT pumpkin pies, she couldn't have done ANY other pies? You get the gist. I was so angry that those pies were 2 seconds from flying out the damn window. So now Im wound up, Hubbs is pissed because lets be real.. EIGHT pies is overkill. And baking 8 pumpkin pies when you are 100% aware your son's fiancé is bringing homemade pumpkin pies for dessert is just fucking rude. So Hubbs calls her up and is like "Really mom? You made EIGHT pumpkin pies, knowing SaltyMermaid was making them for dessert? She took time off work to do all this and you pull that." MIL's defense? She "just wanted to bond with the grandbabies," and that she shouldn't be made to feel bad for doing something to bond with them. Hubbs says "fair enough, but there's more than 1 kind of pie in the world and you could have chosen literally any other kinds of pies to make. And instead you made 8 pumpkin pies, knowing SaltyMermaid is making the same to bring, which is just a slap in the face to SaltyMermaid, who took time off work to do something nice for our family and something I asked her to do because I love her pies." Hubbs called me back and just said he was sorry and he understands why Im pissed. I told him fuck the pies, Im not bringing them. Hubbs insisted we bring them, and after being chewed out the day prior, MIL only brought out two of her pies (which were overdone). Hubbs also made a point to not even touch his mothers pies because Hubbs is smart and he knows where he sleeps at night. MIL made a big show of how good my pies were (Bish I know they're good. I dont even like pumpkin pie but I like mine), and wanted us to leave one of the pies when we left that evening. I had Hubbs grab what was left of my pies, and I just looked at her all surprised and told her she made so many that there's plenty of those left for them. I brought them back home and threw them in the fridge. Petty? Maybe. Did it feel good? Hell yes it did. I will say that this was the ONE time I truly lost my shit over something MIL did. And Im just glad SIL2 gave me a heads up and I got to have my bitchfit in the privacy of my own home, because I don't know that I would have kept my composure if we had walked in to 8 fucking pies on the counter. But it was this occasion that truly set me on a different path with MIL. I was just done at that point. We had just gotten engaged in September, and this is how she wanted to behave at the first get together since we announced? I had hoped that getting engaged would change things for the better between us, because its like "hey, Im not going anywhere." But to me her doing that was just the nail in the coffin. I dropped the rope entirely. I let Hubbs know that I was done with his mom. She gets superficial pleasantries and I'm not doing anything else. I'll still make him pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving, but they will be kept home for him to enjoy and I'll pick up a store bought pecan pie or something to take if MIL is at any Thanksgiving/Christmas event. And if she has the gall to ask me why I didn't make anything like I normally do (desserts are my thing, and I always bring something sweet and homemade), I 100% plan on telling her that after the pumpkin pie incident, Im not putting in effort to bake things for family gatherings. I plan to bring the kids goodie bags of my home-made treats (fudge, toffee, cookies, etc.) and basically just pull a "and none for Gretchen Weiners" when it comes to the inlaws. So, there you have it. MIL's reason #2 as to why I apparently hate her. All over her need to bake 8 fucking pumpkin pies, to prove who-the-Hell-knows-what. Just to clarify, I dont hate my MIL, nor do I even dislike her. Im just DONE with her shit, and absolutely dont worry about anything regarding her. So after dropping the rope, I didnt involve her in shit when it came to the wedding, and Hubbs made sure through SIL that MIL got something appropriate to wear. I am GUESSING dropping the rope like this is what led to her holding on to Instance #3, which happened the day before our wedding. That is the next installment for you guys, but its actually my favorite of her reasons. I wont spoil anything, but I will say that MIL got a huge eye-opener of just how fucking done with her I am. & honestly, I still cackle with glee at the memory of the look on her face. submitted by /u/SaltyMermaidHair to r/JUSTNOMIL [link] [comments]

[Help] Homemade dog treats/chews - what are your favorite (easy/budget-friendly) recipes?
After spending more money than I care to admit on treats for my dog (he's still new and I'm rewarding heavily for lots of training things) I think I want to explore making treats for him. From a budget standpoint this seems much more cost effective, and I like knowing all of the ingredients of what he's eating. I'm not concerned about calories for him - he has a history of being underweight and at this point has a muscular, athletic build. We do lots of exercising and training every day, and he is highly treat motivated. There's a lot of stuff online, but none of it seems to have much protein in it and I'm not a fan of making him treats with the first ingredient being flour. Also to note - the smell of bananas and yogurt makes me very nauseous, so I will be staying away from those. I am also Jewish, so I'm not sure if I could get over the mental hurdle of getting pork for my dog (I know this is silly and I don't even keep kosher, it just feels too weird to buy, even for my dog). So, what are your favorite recipes? Any tips for starting to do this? I love cooking and baking for myself, so I'm excited to include my dog in the fun, too. Thanks!! submitted by /u/midwestmisanthrope to r/dogs [link] [comments]
